One might argue that patience is a virtue; however, in a generation where a lot of things can be done instantly, this saying is really out of context. A few minutes of delay-no matter how short-is still a time lost that could have been put to better use. Indeed, people of the modern and industrialized world tend to be less patient than their ancestors. To a busy office worker, there's nothing more annoying than a computer which takes ages to boot. So to help reduce your stress, here are some tips that are sure to give you a faster boot time. The most common solution for the aforementioned problem involves some tweaks in your computer's settings. As such, one should be very careful when doing these since a little mistake could cause more problems. Configure your "BIOS" The Basic Input/ Output System or better known as BIOS is a software common to all PCs. This is really essential to all computers since this software is responsible for initializing and testing the system's hardware components and loading the computer's operating system (OS) from the hard disk. Booting usually takes some time because of the said tests that are run before the OS is loaded. However, if you're sure that your hardware components are running perfectly, there's no need to do such tests. Instead, you can just tweak the BIOS so that it loads the operating system immediately once you open it. In order to do this, first shut down or hibernate your computer. As soon as the screen loads, press the suggested key to enter the BIOS screen (usually this is "DEL, F2 or F10"). Once this is done, navigate to the "Quick Boot" option and move hard disk to the top of the boot list. By doing this, you are telling the computer to load the OS immediately and not look for other components such as the CD drive and the Universal Serial Bus (USB). After this, navigate to the Exit option then select Save Changes. But on rare occasions where you need to boot from a CD or flash drive, you need to enter the BIOS screen again and edit the boot priority list before startup. Configure programs that launch at startup Usually, once the computer starts up, it runs a set of predefined programs-some of which you don't really need. To save time, you can edit the settings such that upon startup, it only loads the programs that are essential to you. To do this, click on the Start button and type "Run" in the search bar. Open the Run program and type msconfig then press enter. This command will open the System Configuration Utility. Select the Startup tab in the said utility and uncheck all the programs that you don't usually use. However, be careful about this since you might uncheck some programs that are needed to make the computer run properly. Once you are done, click OK and reboot your computer. Configure Windows Services that run at startup Contrary to popular belief, removing certain Windows services using the System Configuration Utility actually causes more harm to your computer rather than improving your boot time. But you can still save time by delaying some services that aren't needed upon startup rather than completely removing them. To do that, click on the Start button and type "Run". Then type the command services.msc and a list of Windows services will appear. Right click on the service that you want to delay and click Properties. On the Properties window, you will find a dropdown list labeled as "Startup Type" and then select Automatic (Delayed Start). Remove unused fonts The amount of fonts installed in your computer also affects the amount of time that your computer needs to load. This is because once Windows starts, your system has to load all the installed fonts; therefore the more fonts you have, the more time it takes for the system to load. In order to improve this, you can just delete the fonts that you don't normally use. This can be done by clicking on the Start button and selecting Control Panel. Click on "Appearance" and open the Fonts folder. There you can find the fonts that are installed in your computer. Just click on the font that you don't use and click "Delete" in the options that appear at the top of the list. The computer can work just fine with 1,000 installed fonts. However, it is recommended to have only 300-500 fonts. But be careful because fonts such as Trebuchet, Verdana, Arial, Tahoma, Times New Roman, Courier New, and MS Sans Serif are needed by your system and should be kept. *********************** ARTICLE END *********************** - To distribute your articles go to http://www.isnare.com/distribution.php - For more free-reprint articles go to http://www.isnare.com |

Although still more expensive than their magnetic counterparts, the fierce competition amongst the manufacturers had led to bigger storage and lower prices. If you recently purchased a laptop or desktop that comes with an "SSD" or bought one to replace your old hard drive, there are a few optimization tips you need to know. You don't need to defragment Back in the days when magnetic drives reigned supreme, defragmenting was a regular necessity to keep if performing well by keeping access times to files at the lowest. SSDs function very differently from magnetic drives so it needs to be treated differently. Defragmenting, for example, will have little effect, if any at all, to the drive's performance. In fact, defragmenting might reduce the life span of SSD because the process calls for small but numerous write operations. Although Windows is preconfigured to disable automatic defrag on SSDs, this might not always be the case so you have to make sure. System Restore should be disabled Arguments abound for the advantages and disadvantages of System Restore when using an SSD. But most reports show that enabling System Restore can significantly slow down an SSDs performance and even interrupt, over time, a vital operation called "TRIM". It is, therefore, advised that the System Restore be turned off but you must be aware that turning this recovery tool can make it difficult to recover from issues like install error or a bad device driver. You can, of course, use third party backup applications to make up for the risk. The good thing about disabling System Restore is it reduces write operations on the SSD which increases longevity and frees up some disk space. Drive indexing should be disabled What's the main purpose of indexing? For faster access to what you're searching for. It works for books, libraries, databases, and data storage. For a magnetic hard disk, drive indexing can dramatically improve access speeds but the same can't be said for SSDs. The effects are from negligible to none because of the SSDs inherent low access times. Drive indexing, like System Restore and defragmenting, results in numerous write operations that might be unnecessary on an SSD and can even reduce the drive's lifespan. Unlike System Restore, however, disabling drive indexing does not present much risk and as mentioned, only benefits magnetic drives. You can disable drive indexing by right clicking on the SSD, and selecting Properties. Deselect the box that states "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed". An error message may pop up but you can just ignore all of them until the configuration is complete. Prefetch and SuperFetch should be disabled Used files and programs that are used frequently are cached by Windows using the Prefetch and SuperFetch features which call for write operations. These are beneficial to magnetic hard drives but the advantages can be ignored for SSDs. Again, unnecessary write operations should be reduced as much as possible to increase the drive's lifetime. Both Prefetch and SuperFetch can be turned off using Windows' Registry Editor. Be cautious, though, when using the Registry Editor to avoid issues and complications. Run regedit.exe and then select this path: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSessionManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParameters". Right click on "EnableSuperFecth and EnablePrefetcher", choose Modify, and then change the value to 0. The change will require a restart. Hibernation should be disabled Hibernation makes restoring your session and boot ups faster by saving the contents of a computer's RAM to a system file named Hiberfil.sys which has a size equivalent to the size of the physical RAM. When you turn on your computer, you are back to what you were working at. SSDs are already fast enough to negate the benefits of hibernation and the space allotted to the hibernation file can be put to better use. Hibernation can be disabled by typing "powercfg -h off" in a command prompt then pressing Enter. Move the Pagefile to another drive This tweak is only applicable if you have an extra magnetic drive that you can use to store your Pagefile. Using a Pagefile calls for massive write operations which can affect the SSDs longevity in a negative way because of the incurred wear and tear. Install a spare, old magnetic drive and then move the Pagefile into it. Launch the Control Panel, click System, click Advanced System Settings, click Advanced Performance, click Settings, click Advanced, click Virtual Memory, and click Change. You can set the Pagefile's location there. Because of the advancement of technology (greater storage sizes, faster processors, more capable batteries, etc.), many people no longer think that defragmentation is necessary. However, the truth is that a lot of the common computer issues that we encounter can be resolved by this simple process. In order to understand how defragmentation helps in maintaining the integrity of your files, it is necessary to comprehend the way the computer stores your files in its memory. When the computer attempts to save any files, it tries to do so in a contiguous section of your storage, ie, a place on the hard drive without any breaks. For new computers, as well as for those with massive memories, this would not be a problem as most of the hard drive would remain clear. Perhaps you still remember how fast your computer was when you first acquired it, and you must also have noticed how it slowed down over the years. As more programs are installed and then uninstalled, and as more files are added and removed, these contiguous spaces on your storage grow more and more scarce, resulting in the system saving a portion of your data in other locations far from the original one. If this happens repeatedly, your hard drive slowly gets fragmented. In order to counter this issue, the Windows operating system is equipped with a tool called the Disk Defragmenter. Once it runs, it will attempt to rearrange all the data on your hard disk, placing related bits and bytes close to each other. As a result, the computer does not have to exert as much effort in accessing these files. The user will therefore be able to enjoy faster system boot times, snappier loading times for files and applications, and even a reduced toll on the batteries (for laptops). It can also improve security as anti-virus, anti-malware, and other similar software will no longer take too much time to scan your storage. One of the perceived drawbacks of defragmentation (or "defragging") is that it could take hours to finish. This is especially true if it is your first time to run the application, or if you have a large storage. However, defragging your system once can guarantee a faster defrag time in the future. To resolve the issue on time constraints, as well, the Disk Defragmenter tool available for Windows 7 and onwards (located under "Accessories > System Tools") also has the capability to run on schedule. A user may select which drives to defragment, running the tool on a daily or weekly schedule, or at a specific day and time of the week. For example, one may set his computer to automatically defragment in the evening so that it will be ready for use the next day. The Disk Defragmenter tool will also allow you to see how fragmented your disks currently are (under the Analyze section). This will let you know how much you will benefit from the process. Here are a few more tips regarding the process of disk defragmentation: * Make sure to close all applications while the Disk Defrag tool is running. The process may take up much of your processor's power, leading to possible frozen screens. * Do not run multiple instances of the Disk Defrag tool. * Make sure that you have at least 15% free space on the drive that you are defragmenting, in order to make the process more efficient. * If you believe that a drive has been corrupted, do not attempt to defragment it as the issue may worsen. * Only local disks may be defragmented. There are some instances, especially for older systems, when a drive is too fragmented that running the native "Disk Defragmentation" tool can actually take a full day -- even more! Though there are defrag software available for download over the Internet that promise a faster defrag time, a good hack to efficiently defragment such a disk is to use a spare hard drive. Simply copy all the files to the spare one, delete everything from the fragmented disk, and copy the files back from the spare drive. This will transfer and reinstate the files in a contiguous manner. Because of the benefits of disk defragmentation such as faster performance and long battery life and extended hard disk life, you should consider regularly using this tool. After all, the Windows operating system is an intelligent one, and it contains virtually everything that is needed for a computer to run efficiently. In our current world where media and files are so readily accessible, and where storage media comes at a dime a dozen, we often forget about the very basic issue of disk fragmentation and the different issues it could cause. Fragmentation is the foremost out of the many reasons why a computer slows down with age. You might remember the first time you booted up your system, how fast and zippy things were. However, as files are saved and deleted from your hard disk, and as programs are installed and removed, fragmentation slowly sets in. When files are saved to your hard disk, the system looks for any free space where the data can be deposited. The hard disk is comparable to a set of shelves, which may or may not be enough to hold the file that you are saving. If the Windows system finds that the space in these "shelves" is not enough, it tries to look for somewhere else to store the data in. Over time, the related bits and bytes that comprise a single file or program may end up in different "shelves". When the system finally tries to call up these files again, it takes a longer time to do so than if the bits of data were saved near each other. Defragmentation (or "defragging") is essentially the process of consolidating all the related and yet fragmented files on the disk. When running the defragmentation software, the Windows operating system rearranges all the data, allowing the system to run more efficiently. Aside from the common reasons why defragmentation is periodically prescribed, other less-discussed issues that could arise may be directly due to a fragmented hard drive. A fragmented hard drive may actually be the cause of a poor battery life for laptops running on Windows operating system, as the hard drive retrieves more energy from the batteries in order to find a certain file or program. This is especially true for modern laptops, with extremely high amounts of disk space. Despite a faster and more efficient processor, more effort is actually placed on the process of finding the files rather than reading it! Defragmenting the hard drive can actually be a time-consuming process, especially if this is the first time you will be doing it after some time; but the gains afterwards (faster startup, snappier program loads, etc.) make it more than worth it. Once the related files are all in one place, it becomes easier for your hard drive to pinpoint their location without spinning endlessly. Less time is consumed, less wear is passed on to the hard drive mechanisms, and less charge is juiced out from the battery. As well, defragmenting the disk can help prevent any future issues relating to file integrity. The process may be able to expose any bad sectors on the disk, allowing the system to avoid saving your files on these parts (consequently saving you from future headaches due to broken files). What's more, you do not need to download any specific program just to do defrag! Though there are several good programs available over the Internet that could help defrag your drives, the Windows operating system also has its own defragmentation tool. To access it, simply follow these steps: * Open your Start Menu. * Click on "All Programs" * Click in the folder that says "Accessories" * Click on "System Tools" * Click on "Disk Defragmenter" * If you are running Windows 7, you may simply type "Disk Defragmenter" in the search bar. Within the interface of the Disk Defragmenter tool is a view of the drives that are currently available on your computer. It can also detect any removable media. Simply click on any of these drives and select whether you would wish to analyze the drive first, or if you wish to defrag it outright. It might help to use the analysis tool first since it will tell you whether the chosen disk will need defragmentation. Sometimes, when things go wrong in our PCs, we resort to downloaded programs that promise a "one-click" fix on any issue that we encounter. Sometimes they work, and at other times, they don't. However, it is also worthwhile to consider that the Windows operating system by itself natively contains all the basic tools needed to run a computer efficiently. All that is left is for us to properly use them. It boots in a jiffy, and any task that you do gets executed in a snap. Files open quickly, and even scan operations are done in record time. However, like all good things, such times do not last for very long. After a few months of use and with hundreds of new files and programs, your PC slowly ages -- and slows down. Several software are actually available over the Internet, promising a quick fix that will bring your system back to the health of its glory days. Some would even promise a "one-click" fix to bring your PC back up to par. If you have ever tried any of these, then you would know that more often than not, these programs could not live up to their promises. It turns out that in several cases, the best remedy for a snail-paced PC would be a certain process, which is built right into the Windows operating system -- Disk Defragmentation. As new programs are installed and removed from your system and as new files are saved in different folders, your hard disk slowly gets fragmented. More precisely, fragmentation happens when your computer attempts to save bits and pieces of information in different points across the hard disk that are not close to each other. When the system attempts to call up this data in the future, it will have to search for multiple parts of the hard disk, taking up more time and energy than if the bits of data were saved close together. Not only do files load slowly, some vital system processes may also load slowly, resulting in frozen screens. When a hard disk is defragmented, the system searches the entire storage for bits that are related or belong to the same file or process. It then "shifts" the location of these processes so that they are close together, allowing the computer to access them more easily. The regular defragmentation of the hard disk results in a large performance gain. Below are some of the benefits of hard disk defragmentation. * Faster Loading of Applications. This is especially true for larger applications, but virtually any file on the system will benefit if the storage is not fragmented. In essence, a storage is comparable to a series of storage boxes that store vital pieces of data. Once the hard drive has all its related data near each other, there is no more need to exert excess effort to search the entire storage. However, it is not only the loading time that is affected. It can also help speed up all processes, reducing the lag evident in aging computers. * Faster Start Up. If defragmentation improves the loading time of different files and applications, then the entire boot time of the Windows operating system can be improved as well. When the operating system boots up, it systematically goes through all of the files and processes that will enable it to be usable. If these files are scattered in multiple places around the hard drive, then it is much harder for the OS to do so. * Extended Life for your Hard Drive. Despite the advent of Solid State Drives, a vast majority of hard drives today still consist of the mechanical variety. It is basically made of a disk and an arm that scans it. When fragmented, the disk has to spin multiple times as the arm scans it, causing more stress. A defragmented hard drive will have less distance to scan when all the bits and bytes are in neighboring places. * Better Security. One may not think of it, but a fragmented hard drive could actually help conceal holes in your computer's security. When an anti-virus, anti-malware, or virtually any security software scans a fragmented drive, the process is usually not as efficient as when the drive was properly defragmented. * Less Errors. When a hard drive is defragmented, the Windows operating system can actually point out some bad sectors that could potentially cause problems when used to save files. * Reduced Defragmentation Time in the Future. One of the striking things about the defragmentation process is that it can take several hours to complete in the first run, depending on the size of the drive. However, regularly defragmenting can help reduce the needed timeframe in future runs. While computers are very complex systems and may need different levels of care, it helps to realize that sometimes, the most basic maintenance can help alleviate some of the common issues that we encounter. Furthermore, the magnetic hard drives still deliver the lowest cost per gigabyte ratio when it comes to storage. Though it may never match the performance of the more advanced "SSD", there are a lot of simple ways to speed up your magnetic hard drive and improve its performance. Partition your hard drive It's perhaps one of the most useful tweaks you can to a hard drive but still most people are not doing it. Perhaps they just want the maintenance simplicity of having a single volume when they open the Windows Explorer. Dividing the hard drive into multiple partitions has quite a few benefits and one of the obvious is keeping the OS and application files separate from other data. This makes installs and uninstalls a lot safer and cleaner because it poses less risk to the stored data files. Partitioning also keeps your page file (also called a swap file) separate from the other files, increases the reliability by reducing the chance of file system corruption affecting other partitions, and allowing you to boot from multiple operating systems and versions. There are quite a few free and paid partitioning applications out there. Windows has its own built-in tools too. Regularly defragment A single file can have pieces of it scattered all over a hard drive's physical surface. And when a lot of files are stored this way, excessive fragmentation can occur. This slows down access to the fragmented files as the hard disk head had to move to across different locations to access each of the file's fragments. You can easily prevent file fragmentation by using a defragmenter tool. The purpose of the application is to put the pieces of the fragmented files by copying each part and moving them to a solid or contiguous block on the surface of the hard drive. This makes accessing the files faster and also more efficient. Windows has a default defragmenting tool that can be accessed by right clicking on the drive in Explorer, clicking the Properties, selecting the Tools tab, and clicking on the Defragment button. You can then choose a drive to analyze and defragment. You can also opt to have your hard drive defragment automatically on a preset time. Regularly empty the browser cache and Recycle Bin Deleted files are stored in the Recycle Bin, allowing Windows to recover accidentally deleted files. But it can get big after a while so it's a good practice to regularly check and empty this folder in case you don't really need the files anymore. This frees up disk space that you can use for other storage purposes. You can also press and hold the Shift key and press the Delete button to permanently delete files instead of storing them on the Recycle Bin. To free up even more disk space, you can also regularly empty the Temporary Internet Files and also other cache-type folders that applications (like browsers) use to store temporary browsing history and information. These cache files may speed up browsing but it can also fill up the hard drive if not emptied regularly. This can be done automatically through the browser settings. Leave some space for your Pagefile In Windows, the Pagefile or the swap file is a type of a virtual memory used to store data from an idle application so that more physical memory or RAM can be freed up for other important purposes. Although the size can be set manually, it is advised that this be left for the OS to decide. Putting the Pagefile in a different partition ensures that data and applications won't have to compete for the space that the Pagefile needs to use. Move the Pagefile for better performance For even better performance, put the Pagefile on a partition on a separate physical drive than the boot drive. This makes access to the Pagefile.sys much faster. Doing this will require a little bit more work but the improved performance can be worth the effort. This procedure also requires administrator privileges on the computer. Launch the Control Panel, click System, click Advanced System Settings, click Advanced Performance, click Settings, click Advanced, click Virtual Memory, and click Change. From here, you can set the Pagefile to a different partition or drive. To complete the process, the computer needs to be restarted. Author: Robert Corter Word Count: 789 Article URL: http://www.isnare.com/?aid=1912771&ca=Computers+and+Technology Format: 64cpl Contact The Author: http://www.isnare.com/eta.php?aid=1912771 Easy Publish Tool: http://www.isnare.com/html.php?aid=1912771 *********************** ARTICLE START *********************** Did your laptop suddenly shut down even if there's still about 10% of the battery left in your device? Or worse, you're absolutely sure that you still got 25% power left, and yet your laptop still died on you? In these scenarios, your battery most probably isn't showing the correct power level that it has. The best way to prevent these problems from surfacing is through calibration. How do batteries work? Before, your devices are using nickel-based batteries. However, this type is known to memorize your shallow discharges, which is simply called the "memory effect". For instance, if you usually discharge your laptop by 25%, then your nickel-based battery will remember that. Thus, it will appear that your power level is full even though your device is only 85% charged. Fortunately, this doesn't happen with a lithium-based battery, which is what is used by most laptops today. However, while a shallow discharge doesn't have any effect in lithium batteries, performing an extreme discharge however will only harm them. An extreme discharge would entail draining most, if not, all of your battery's juice (ie, 0% charge) or just performing a little discharge (ie, 95% charge). Lithium batteries exhibit the same effect as the nickel-based one at the extreme levels of discharge. As such, you should plug in your computer immediately if it is around 50% in power. Why is there a need to calibrate it? It is proven that no matter how your treat your power device, its capacity to hold power will still deplete over time. Also, your battery will most likely give an incorrect estimate of power level if it doesn't get the maintenance it needs. Through calibration, one should be able to prolong the life span of their batteries. Also, it can prevent unsafe events and other power-related problems in the near future. For these reasons, it is recommended that computer users should calibrate their batteries every now and then. What happens in a battery calibration? As said before, lithium-based batteries cannot handle repeated extreme discharges. As such, there is a need to calibrate it to ensure the accuracy of its power level readings. In a calibration, you simply discharge your battery from a full 100% to a flat 0%. Afterwards, you plug it again until it reaches 100%. When should you calibrate your battery? Since the calibration requires an extreme discharge, you cannot perform this maintenance procedure on a daily basis. Experts recommend that you do the calibration every two to three months. This can greatly help in preserving the accuracy of your power meter. How do you do the calibration? There are several ways on how you can proceed with the calibration. Some laptops have a feature in their BIOS setup to enable calibration. Those who do not have such feature use a software to calibrate their batteries. The last option is to do this manually, which will be described in the following steps: 1. Charge your battery until it reaches the 100% level (fully charged). 2. Keep it plugged in for at least two more hours so that it can cool down. 3. Click Start then select Control Panel. 4. In the Control Panel, open Power Options. 5. In your current power plan, click Change plan settings. 6. Open Change advanced power settings. 7. Under Battery, select the settings listed below. Critical battery action (On battery) - Sleep Critical battery level - 5% 8. Click OK. 9. Unplug your laptop and use it until it reaches the critical level. Don't let your pc sleep, hibernate, or use the screensaver during the process. 10. After your computer shuts down, leave it turned off for 5 hours or more. 11. Lastly, charge your laptop again until it reaches the 100% level (fully charged). And that concludes the calibration procedure. Since this process requires a lot of time on your part, be sure to start the process such that the 6-hour shutdown is situated around your bedtime period. Also, do not forget to turn back your power plan settings to its original state after the calibration. Most people do away with calibrating their batteries because they aren't really worried about the inaccurate readings. But once their batteries die down on them, that's when they start learning about calibration. However, in this scenario a calibration may be useless as the lifespan of the device has already lessened to a great extent. Thus, it is important that you calibrate before you get these warning signs, or else it may be too late to save your battery. Author: Robert Corter Word Count: 793 Article URL: http://www.isnare.com/?aid=1912770&ca=Computers+and+Technology Format: 64cpl Contact The Author: http://www.isnare.com/eta.php?aid=1912770 Easy Publish Tool: http://www.isnare.com/html.php?aid=1912770 *********************** ARTICLE START *********************** No matter what your operating system is, you're bound to encounter technical problems such as system errors, missing DLL files and corrupted drivers every time you use a computer. And so before you run into one of these issues, you should at least have an idea on what to do during these scenarios. To help you with that, here are three of the common computer-related blunders experienced by most PC users and its possible solutions. 1. You cannot connect to the internet. Surfing the internet is one of the mostly used function of a computer. Thus, it is highly likely that a user has encountered at least one network connection error. This error is brought about by a lot of factors, which includes the following: * hardware/software-related errors in the router * incorrect configuration of the network and IP address * erroneous setup of network cables * frequency of time-outs and latency of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) * firewall programs You should check if your device is correctly setup in these parts. For instance, you must check if you have plugged the LAN cable in its correct socket. You may also try to check the latency of your ISP. However, if you think that solving these problems is too technical for you, you may contact your ISP's technical support. Also, more often than not, the root cause of a network trouble is too simple that people usually overlook it. So before anything else, check if you have turned on your "LAN" access in your computer, and don't forget to plug and turn on your router (if you have any). 2. There is a lot of adware that pop up in your browser. Did you notice a new toolbar in your browser even though you haven't installed anything? How about during your web browsing, did your browsing space suddenly become small because of the pop-up advertisements? If you experience any of these symptoms, your machine might be infected with adware. An adware, short for advertising-supported software, is the culprit behind those popups in your browser. Apart from displaying unsolicited advertisements in your browser, it also collects information about your browsing habits. Most people are not okay with someone snooping in their internet activity without their knowledge, so using an anti-virus program is in order. How did you get an adware in your PC? Most users like you spend their time surfing the internet. Therefore, there's a great chance that you might have downloaded a file which also triggered an adware download. Or maybe, you have visited a website which automatically infects a computer with an adware. To avoid having this annoying software, you should only visit websites that are trusted. Also as much as possible, avoid downloading content from unknown sources. 3. Your computer freezes a lot. Most of the time, the reason behind most PC lags is that the user is not informed of what his/her computer is capable of doing. For instance, if you're just using a netbook, don't expect your device to run a resource-intensive program such as Photoshop or an online game. However, even though your device has the specs to run an application with ease, your PC is still running slower than what is expected of it. A possible reason might be that you are not maintaining your system on a regular basis. If you don't clean up or defragment your system, then it is inevitable that your computer will perform poorly. As such, it is recommended that you perform a basic maintenance checklist every month or year, depending on how frequent and how intensive you use your device. Your checklist should include running the Disk Clean Up and Disk Defragmenter utility tools pre-installed in the Windows platform. Also, to free up space in your hard drive, you should remove any rarely-used programs. Lastly, don't forget to take good care of your hardware. If all else fails, then your device might probably be infected by a virus. To prevent such scenario, you should always run your anti-virus program whenever you plug in an external device or whenever you connect to the internet. Furthermore, you should always keep your anti-virus program up-to-date with the latest security patches and virus definitions. Dealing with PC problems doesn't mean that you always have to consult a computer technician. In fact, what most people don't know is that these technical issues can be solved by an average user. The key here is to know the tips and tricks on how to fix these problems and most importantly, how to prevent them. However, there are certain components of the computer that cannot be modified without resorting to the Windows registry. But because most people are unfamiliar with it, they tend to shy away from using this tool. As such, here are the basics regarding editing the registry through regedit.exe, and how you can modify it to your advantage. What is the Windows Registry? The Windows Registry pertains to the database which stores all the information regarding your computer's hardware, software, and its user accounts. Hence, whenever you use your computer, your operating system looks for the settings of each component that you use in the registry. Normally, your operating system automatically creates the "regedit" files of all the installed components in your system. Therefore, there is no need for you to setup each entry manually. Also, it is not recommended for novice users to alter its entries, particularly if they don't know the impact of each change to their system. How come there is a registry? Prior to Windows 95, operating systems store INI files. These INI files store information on both the hardware and the software installed in the computer. However, Microsoft, the developer of the Windows operating system, deemed that this structure is chaotic since each INI file is scattered in the hard drive. Also, computer users can possibly damage the system once they modify or delete the INI files. To resolve this problem, the registry was made. It serves as the database of all system-related information. Thus, changing the system settings has become much easier since the introduction of this database. However, this tool is only applicable to the Windows platform. It is applied to operating systems starting from the Windows 95 version. Other platforms such as Apple and Linux use another way other than this tool to store pertinent system information. What are the parts of the registry? Upon opening the "regedit.exe", you will see the binary tree. It is a hierarchical display of regedit components, found at the left side of the dialog box. It starts from My Computer at the top, and this is subdivided into key components such as: * "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" * "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" * "HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE" * "HKEY_USERS" * "HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG" The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT section contains the information about the Component Object Model (COM) classes and file associations. Thus, whenever you open a file, your system pulls up the entries to see which program can open your file. The HKEY_USERS and HKEY_CURRENT_USER categories store user data such as Windows environment settings and hardware/software preferences. Your computer looks for these entries whenever a user logs in the system so that it can load that user's desktop based on his/her preferred settings. HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE pertains to all information regarding your local machine. Therefore, all your hardware, software, system and security settings are contained in this component. Lastly, the HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG section holds the data about the current hardware utilized by your system. This data is regenerated in every boot. How do you access the registry? To do this, you use the Registry Editor, or regedit.exe. This tool is located in the Windows folder in your local drive. To open the regedit.exe, follow these steps: * Click the Start Button. * In the Search programs and files field, type "regedit" then click Enter. This program will populate above the Search bar. * Click the regedit application to open it. Whenever you install a new program, create a new user profile, or add a new hardware, the Windows platform creates the corresponding regedit information for each action. The regedit.exe lets you see all the registry entries present in the system. How do you modify the entries in the registry? Upon opening the regedit.exe, you will see the binary tree. This tree contains all the key components in your system, which is represented by a folder. Each component houses the regedit entries, which you can change freely if you are using an Administrator account. For example, let's say you want to change the username of the current user. Thus, you need to find its corresponding entry first. Click HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder then click "Volatile Environment" to see the registry entries for all users. Finally, to change the username, you simply replace the value set in the "username" key. Upon finishing this article, you should be able to understand the functions and importance of the Windows Registry in your system. Through this, you now have a greater scope in modifying your computer's settings. *********************** ARTICLE END *********************** - To distribute your articles go to http://www.isnare.com/distribution.php - For more free-reprint articles go to http://www.isnare.com |

Many people have heard about it but how many of them do not fully understand what it is all about? How does it work? Is it essential for a user to be knowledgeable about it? This article would help you learn all that and more so you would know what to do when the need to perform maintenance arises. However, keep in mind that you should be careful when making changes in this component because doing so might cause your operating system to stop functioning. By definition, Windows Registry is a hierarchical database that stores virtually all settings for your computer: Windows "OS" settings, application settings, driver information, and user passwords, among other things. Back in the day, all application settings were stored in text-based configuration files. For every application there was a corresponding text file configuration. The Registry solves that "issue" of having different files by allowing one single location for all your computer settings. It consolidates and restores all the system settings in one single place, thus, it is more convenient when you need to access the files. Accessing it is easier since it is read into memory every time you reboot your computer, thereby, giving you instant access when needed. How to Edit the Registry While manual editing should not be performed by non-computer experts, being knowledgeable about properly restoring the system is important for all computer users, considering that the proliferation of viruses, malware, and spyware that can potentially corrupt the Registry and the entire computer. There are different ways to perform editing, but the most commonly used is the regedit.exe utility: * Go to the Start menu. * Go to the Search or Run boxes and type in "regedit.exe". * Hit Enter. * When the Registry Editor opens, you will be able to view and edit its contents. * You'll find 2 windows: a tree with folders on the left, and the contents or values of the selected folder or key. * To open a particular branch, you'll only need to click on the [+] plus sign or simply double click the folder. * To access the contents of the folder (key), click on the particular key and the values on the right side becomes visible. * You can edit by adding a new key or value by simply selecting New from the Edit menu. * You can also rename any folder you want by slowly clicking the desired folder twice. * Delete a folder or value by simply clicking on what is to be deleted and pressing on Delete. 7 Predefined Root Keys (Folders) * "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM)" * "HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG (HKCC)" * "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (HKCR)" * "HKEY_CURRENT_USER (HKCU)" * "HKEY_USERS (HKU)" * "HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA" * "HKEY_DYN_DATA" It is important that you back the files up before making any changes because you can never restore once changes are made. Making a System Restore snapshot is one way of backing up files and data. This will allow you to return to the settings of the previous snapshot without risking losing recent changes made. By default, the System Restore makes multiple snapshots every 24 calendar days. How to Restore Registry for Windows 7.0 * Access the Start menu. * On the Search box, type in "systempropertiesprotection". * Hit Enter. If you are asked for an administration password, key in the needed information then click Allow. * The System Protection tab opens, click Create to make a restore point. * Once you have created a restore point, click Close, and then OK. * In case the System Restore is turned off, you can just choose the local disk, then click Apply and then Create. Cleaning Windows Registry There are a lot of ads and testimonials that you can find in the internet about registry cleaning products claiming to fix errors and clean the Registry. These products do not really "clean" the system. But there are some that work better than the others. Some are even dangerous, especially when you do the cleaning and you don't have enough computer know-how. There will be occasions when you need to clean the Registry because some programs or applications have rendered the computer to become too "slow". You don't have to automatically run the "cleaner", because in the first place, you only have to be more cautious when installing programs to your computer. Defragging the Windows Registry Defragmentation is a common practice by users believing the regularly defragging the computer helps in optimizing the computer's performance. It is important to point out that the Registry data is directly loaded into the computer's RAM when system is rebooted so your system doesn't become super fast once defragmented. *********************** ARTICLE END *********************** - To distribute your articles go to http://www.isnare.com/distribution.php - For more free-reprint articles go to http://www.isnare.com |

You might feel overwhelmed at first but when you know the basics, you don't need to bring your desktop or laptop to a technician each time you encounter problems. Consultation and repair is not cheap, you see. It might interest you to know that there are problems that even a non-techie person can easily solve. In this article, listed are some of the most common issues and how to fix them. 1. Your computer doesn't turn on. So you turn your device on but it won't and there are no indicator lights or beeps, what do you do? The first thing to check is if it is plugged in or there are no loose cables. If you have checked everything but it still won't turn on, the problem could be in the hardware. But first, try these: * Try transferring to a different power outlet. You can also try connecting a different electrical appliance to the power outlet to check if the problem is in the power source. * Check the components of your computer; make sure they are in their proper places. Careful opening up the computer, especially if you are not an expert. Check if the cards and memory sticks are not dislodged. * Establish if the system short-circuited. Check thoroughly for components that might have been burned out. You might need to replace those parts that were damaged. 2. "Freezing" You might have encountered this issue a couple of times and you were only thinking that the system is just running slow each time. However, "freezing" can be an indication of a more serious problem. Viruses and spyware could be the culprits. Malicious files or programs might have been installed into your computer while you were browsing an unfamiliar website or an infected email. It can also be because of a hardware problem, like there is low memory. Scan the computer, your antivirus software will automatically "heal" infected files and folders upon scanning. You have to ensure that your antivirus and firewall are working well. Do not click on suspicious looking files or emails and refrain from visiting unfamiliar and unsecured websites. Make sure that your antivirus software is always updated. Check also for outdated hardware drives and make sure they are up to date. If there is a hardware problem, try to uninstall and reinstall a component or program. 3. Computer is running slow. This could have been caused by a lot of issues. It could be in the memory or the hardware. Below are the most common causes and how you can fix them: * Unused programs might be running upon startup. Configure your startup programs via the Advanced Task Manager option. This is accessible when you access the Menu button on the taskbar when you are using Windows 8. * There might be overheating. There are instances when the processor might have been damaged due to overheating. Make sure that the computer fan is working and the interior is dust-free. If you don't have a cooling fan yet, install one. * Scan the system to flush out malware infection that might be causing the slowdown. 4. The "Blue Screen of Death" Regularly getting the "BSOD" indicates difficulty in accessing the computer's "RAM". Take note of the error message and check with the Microsoft support agents. If the error is caused by a memory problem, it would be easier to fix by upgrading. If you can't find the right diagnosis for the problem, troubleshoot by swapping the memory sticks with another laptop or computer, but make sure they have the same type of memory. If you still cannot resolve the issue, you might want to have your RAM checked. 5. The speakers have no sound. Instinctively, you have to check cable connections. If there is no problem with the connection and the speakers are turned on, you can do the following: * Establish if the issue is with a defective sound card. When there is a red overlay on the volume icon, the driver might have a problem. Make sure that you know the model and manufacturer of the sound card so you can install updated drivers. * You can also right-click on the Volume icon on your system tray and click Playback Devices. See if configurations are accurate. Even if you are no IT-expert, you don't need to panic if you encounter problems with your computer and laptop. Resources are available online, so you don't have to worry. *********************** ARTICLE END *********************** - To distribute your articles go to http://www.isnare.com/distribution.php - For more free-reprint articles go to http://www.isnare.com |

As you acquire more and store files on your computer, the large disk space becomes inappropriate anymore. If you are looking for clever tips to free up space, these tips might help. 1. Establish your computer's current status. * Go to Settings and then click Change PC Settings. * Click on PC and Devices and go to Disk Space. * You will find the amount of free space indicated under Free up space on this PC. * Check your Recycle Bin for deleted files that might still be there and click Empty my Recycle Bin to completely delete the files. 2. Perform Disk Cleanup This is the initial instinct and most of the time, it's never been wrong. It is important that you regularly clean your computer to avoid accumulating many files. This ensures that your computer is running smoothly. Disk cleanup will perform an analysis of all files and folders to determine which files are to be deleted. * Click Start. * Go to All Programs. * Click on Accessories and then go to System Tools. * Choose Disk Cleanup. * Select the files that you want cleaned up. A window will appear, and you have to press Continue when a new window prompts you to continue on with the process. * Choose the hard disk drive that you want to clean up by clicking on the Drive Selection dialog box, and then click OK. * After that, Disk Cleanup will analyze and calculate the amount of space which can be freed up. This may take a couple of minutes though so you'll have to wait. * Click on the Disk Cleanup tab, and then tick on the boxes that correspond to the types of files that you want to delete. * Press OK and Delete Files. Clean up process will begin shortly. 3. Use the Disk "Defragmenter" Disk Defragmentation is the process of consolidating fragmented files on your system. Over time, fragmentation occurs and it will affect how your computer performs. You can schedule Disk Defragmentation regularly so you don't have to worry in case you forgot to defragment. * Access Start menu and go to All Programs. * Go to System Tools and select Disk Defragmenter. * When the window prompts you, Continue. If you are asked for an administrator password, key in the information needed. * Click on Defragment Now. * Wait until the process is completed and Close the window. 4. Uninstall programs that are no longer needed. Over time, there might be programs that are insignificant already. These might be taking up the needed disk space. * Go to Start and then to Control Panel. * Click Programs (Uninstall a Program). * Go to Programs and Features. * Choose from the list which programs and software to uninstall. Select the particular program/software for deletion and select Uninstall. * Choose Continue when prompted. 5. Reduce space allotted for System Restore. System Restore might be eating too much space; you can correct that by reducing the allotted space. When you do this, you will end up with lesser restore points and limited copies of restored files. If these features are not as important as freeing up space, you can go ahead with the adjustment. * With Windows 7.0, click the Start menu and go to Computer. * Select Properties and then click on Control Panel. * Then go to System Protection, you have three options: create a restore point, configure settings, and use System Restore. * Begin with the drive that you intend to reduce first and then click Configure. * When you are in the Configure panel, you can completely turn off system protection, delete older restore points, change configuration to restore files only, or to drag the slider and choose whether you need more or less space. * Once done, you might get an ample amount of free space and your computer would be working smoothly again. 6. Reduce the size for the "WinSxS" folder. Take note that completely deleting files or the whole WinSxS folder might cause damage to the system. You'll find the WinSxS within the Windows folder. It serves as storage for Windows Component Store files, which support functions for updating and customizing Windows. You may access the Task Scheduler folder to reduce file size. * Go to Start and click on Control Pane. * Go to System and Security and open Administrative Tools tab and choose Schedule Tasks. * Select on Task Scheduler Library and choose Microsoft. * Go to Windows and then Servicing. * Go to "StartComponentCleanup" and go to Run under Selected Item. Over time, performance slows down until eventually everything is proceeding at a snail's pace. This is most probably one of the most inconvenient things that can happen to anyone. Opening files, saving or exiting files would take forever to perform. It is important to understand that slow PC performance is typically closely related to memory usage and installed applications. However, it could also be because of disk fragmentation and viruses. This means that the less free memory available, the slower the PC. Also, the more applications and clutter in the system, the slower the performance. So, what can be done about this? Here are a few tips: Restart Most of the time, PC performance improves by simply restarting. Sometimes, the system just needs a restart so that applications will be able to start and function correctly. Uninstall There are lots of pre-installed programs in a new PC. Over the course of usage, a lot more is added to the hard drive. The accumulations can slow down performance. They crowd the system and some keep running in the background without the user's knowledge. Uninstall al programs that are not used for quite awhile, especially ones that has never been used. Follow these simple steps: * Select the "START" button. * Click "Control Panel" to expand the options. * Choose "Programs and Features" to open a list of programs. * Uninstall the programs that you never use. Temporary Files Temporary files are like packaging. They come from installed applications, some downloaded files, and Internet browsing history. These are often automatically placed in the Temp files. These are technically unimportant files that serve no other purpose than to clutter the system. To remove these: * Open the folder "My Computer". * Select the main drive. This is often the "C:" * Select the folder "Windows". In this folder, find one with the label "Temp". * Right click the "Temp" folder to open an options list. * Select "View" and then "Details". A list of files will be opened. * Highlight all old files and delete them. Retain only those that have the current dates on them. * After deleting, exit this window. Go to the "Recycle Bin" by clicking the icon on the desktop. Locate the "Empty Recycle Bin" option, often located at the menu bar. Drives Aside from programs that clutter the system, the drive also affects PC performance. There are 2 ways to improve the drive and help the PC to perform faster. * Solid state drive This uses a flash memory, more like a huge USB stick. It can read data much faster, which helps speed up the system. * Hard drive memory Improve the hard drive's storage capacity by adding more. Even with regular maintenance, de-cluttering and cleanup, the hard drive will fill up over time. Tasks that require much from the processor like things related to media and videos can seriously use up a lot of the hard drive. Add more hard drive storage by installing an external or internal one. Start ups On start up, the system runs a few programs in the background. Some are necessary, most are not. These unnecessary programs running in the background uses up computer memory and slow down PC performance. Disable programs that are unnecessary to make the PC run faster. * Select "START" and type "RUN" in the text box at the bottom of the Start Menu. A small box will appear. * Type "msconfig" to open a window with all the list of files used by the computer. On the tab listings, find and click "Startup". A list of all applications running at start up appears. * Manually untick all the files that are not necessary. If there are a lot of files, just choose the "disable all" then tick the ones that are most important for system operations such as antivirus programs. RAM If the computer seems to slow down when using several applications at once, several windows are open, or browsing a few tabs, the problem may lie on the RAM. The computer uses RAM for running programs. Speed up the system by upgrading your computer memory module. Disk Defragment This is one of the more drastic measures to optimize system function. * Click "My Computer". * Right click on the computer's hard drive. * Click on "Properties" from the menu. * A "Tools" tab will appear. Look and click "Defragment Now". These should solve most problems with slow PC performance. If the problem still persists, it may be time to check and change the hardware, or buy a new one especially if you are using your computer to run resource intensive applications. Programs accumulate with every use, taking up huge disk space. Get more free space and the speed of PC performance is likely to improve. Gettid rid of clutter could The first thing to do when clearing the drive is to look for unnecessary files. These often come pre-installed or programs that come along with installed applications. Most of these are not vital to the system but do take up a huge memory space. They are like goo that clogs the system. Disk Cleanup Disk cleanup is a built-in feature in Windows that helps keep tabs and delete unimportant data such as temporary internet files. Each time a user browses the Internet, information is temporarily stored in the PC. Without regular cleaning, these can accumulate and use a huge chunk of storage, especially with frequent internet browsing. * Open "My Computer" by clicking the computer icon on the desktop. * Right click the hard drive to clean. For example, clean the main drive "Drive C:" * Select the option "Properties". * The Properties window will appear. Click the option "Disk Cleanup". * A window with a list of files will appear. Click the ones to be deleted. Unimportant ones to delete include log files, temporary files and those in the Recycle Bin. After checking these, click the OK button at the bottom of the window. Disk cleanup can also be used to clean the system files. Follow the instructions above. When the window with a list appears, look for the "Clean up System Files" button, usually at the left side, towards the bottom of the window. Another way is to click the "More Options" button in the Properties window. Select the "Clean up" button found in "System Restore and Shadow Copies". This will delete the data from system restore. All files beyond the current restore point will be deleted. Exercise caution when choosing this option. Make sure that the current point is working properly because after this process, older restore points will no longer be used. Uninstalling Applications Some applications just take up too much space. Uninstall these programs, especially if there are not that vital to the PC operation. To check, open the "Programs and Features" window in the "Control Panel". A list of programs in the PC will appear. Check the "Size" column to see how much space each application uses. If this column is not available, select the "Options" button located at the upper right corner of the list. Click "Details" to view the file size. Again, exercise caution with this option. The file size information is not always accurate. Some applications do not show the actual disk space they use. Temporary Files The Disk Cleanup feature in Windows does not clean everything. It will not touch the temporary files from other programs, such as those in browser caches of Chrome or Firefox. Browser cache use the disk space to make future access to websites is faster and easier. However, this would the least of the worries if the rest of PC function is too slow. These files can easily use gigabytes worth of storage space. When freed, these gigabytes can make a huge difference in how fast the PC works. Duplicate Files Ever noticed a few files in several different folders. These duplicate files are unnecessary and clutter the system. They use up important space on the computer's memory. Scan the hard drive for these and delete them. System Restore Files Sometimes, "System Restore" has several restore points that eat up much space on the hard drive. Use this option with caution because less restore points can compromise the system when a restore is in order in the future. Make sure the saved restore point is the best in the lot. Radical Alternatives There are a few radical, nuclear options that can be used to free up more space. However, these steps can also disable a few vital features in Windows operation. Do these only when in desperate need for more disk space. Hibernation Hibernation feature can be disabled to free more space. RAM contents are saved each time the computer hibernates. The more often this happens, the more data is saved. This way, when the system is booted, the user is back right to the point of last use. By disabling the Hibernate feature, the computer no longer saves any data of from the last use, freeing a lot of memory. System Restore The "System Restore" feature can be disabled. Just like Hibernate, System Restore also saves data from the restore points. Disabling this will free some memory. Again, this is radical and will seriously compromise the system should a restore is needed in the future. However, like most good things, this did not last for quite as long as you wished. Over time, the computer starts to exhibit the annoying frozen screens, lag, and tremendously long processing times when executing various tasks. Although this is not entirely avoidable, there are a few things that you can do in order to reverse the process. A simple Internet search will reveal a lot of tips that you can use to speed your system up using the utilities in your operating system. However, there are a few things you can do with your hardware too in order to give your PC that breath of new life. Get a better video card. Most of us utilize the computer only for basic browsing and similar processes. However, there are also those who are into dabbling with multimedia, such as movies, photo editing, and games. If you fall into these categories or any of the related branches, then a better video card would be a wise investment. As you might have noticed, the best performing computer systems are bristling with high-capacity video cards, allowing the other parts of the computer memory to be free for other uses. If your computer is equipped with SLI or CrossFireX support, then instead of replacing the current video card, you may add a new one and bridge the two. If you think, however, that this is only for die-hard gamers, that is not the case. In fact, a more powerful GPU can also be leveraged to assist in computational processes. Get a faster hard drive. As you know, the hard drive is the major repository of almost everything in your computer, and much of the speed needed in pulling up files and programs come from this. A slower hard drive means a slower response time, no matter how fast your processor is. Solid State Drives (SSDs) are the newest developments in the field of hard drive technology. These drives do not use any mechanical components, unlike their more prevalent counterparts, and act like larger-scale flash drives. Because they do not have to scan the data manually, SSDs are deemed to produce faster boot times and data retrieval times. However, SSDs are also victim to a smaller capacity than the mechanical drives, so if you need all the extra space within your computer (instead of an external drive), it is better to look at faster RPMs, larger cache sizes, and better seek speeds and transfer rates in order to optimize the speed and performance of your PC. Use a RAID configuration. "Redundant Array of Independent Disks", commonly called RAID, is a type of technology that combines different multiple drive components, mainly as a means to improve performance. There are different architectures of the RAID, usually followed by a certain number (ie, RAID 1, RAID 0, RAID 6, RAID 10). Each number denotes a different mix between the primary goals of this technology: capacity, availability, performance, and reliability. Those levels higher than RAID 0 also helps performance by providing protection against read errors, as well as the failure of the whole disk. Of course, this is getting into the technical side of things, and thorough research must be done in order to know which RAID configuration is best suited for you. If done appropriately, this little trick can do wonders in improving your computer speed. Regularly update your hardware and drivers. Since the computer is an intricate system, any hardware issues will manifest in software anomalies. Primary among these would be issues regarding outdated drivers that are integral to the hardware's smooth function. In fact, some of the more notorious computer errors such as the EXE, SYS, and DLL problems can be stopped by simply regularly updating your drivers. Aside from causing annoying popups in their early stages, these issues can quickly escalate to a dead computer unit if left unaddressed. There are lots of good utilities available for download that you can use to monitor the integrity of your drivers. Computers are very versatile systems, and if take care of properly, can mostly fix the minor issues on their own. But like anything else, proper care and periodic maintenance would be the best solution to optimizing your PC's performance. The tricks shown in this article, when followed, should induce a huge boost in your system's speed and performance! With them, we are all able to perform tasks that were either never before possible, or have been delegated to people or businesses with specialized skills. Now, the computer has turned into a very basic tool that is available for almost everyone. Over the recent years, the personal computer has evolved greatly in two main aspects: speed and storage capacity. However, it is not uncommon for the regular computer to suffer moments of sluggishness every now and then. The good news is that in most instances, these issues can be fixed. The following are some basic tips that can guarantee a faster and smoother computing experience: Minimize junk. When man landed on the moon, the scientists at NASA did it with slide rules and a rudimentary (at least in modern standards) computer with a measly 64 kilobytes of memory. Compare that to the terabytes of information that we can now store. Perhaps because of the aforementioned exponential increase in the modern PC's storage capacities, many owners believe that their machines can handle literally anything stored on their hard drives. Though this seems to be the case in most instances, even the best personal computers can choke if overloaded with junk files. One of the most common issues that plague large hard drives is the issue of fragmentation, which is also most commonly ignored. This happens when too many files are scattered in several places across the hard disk, giving the system a hard time when trying to recall the needed data. In this regard, it would be helpful to check whether your computer harbors multiple instances of the same file. Some media files, especially pictures and songs may have multiple copies inside your drive. Certain software are available that can help scan for duplicates. It is also worthwhile to clear unwanted files that may be hogging space in your computer's temporary memory. Browser cache, the Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and a lot more may need to be cleared up, freeing possibly a couple of gigabytes of memory. Keep your PC secure. While computer security evolves, viruses evolve too. And sometimes, they evolve even faster. Sometimes, a computer may suddenly be slowed down by a virus that is attacking your system. Always make sure to run good security software on your system. Most of the time, it is also advisable to run two different instances of security programs -- one anti-virus and one anti-malware program. This would help you detect security infractions more effectively. Also, many users rely too much on the real-time protection that anti-virus programs provide. A regular scan would still be in order, however, to detect any harmful software that may already have taken root. And of course, the firewall should never be disregarded. Many avid Internet users keep their firewalls turned off to speed up their connection, but this makes them bait for unwanted infiltration. Remember that aside from merely slowing your computer down, viruses can also destroy your entire system, and can even steal vital information about you! If you believe that a virus may be on to something, disconnect from the Internet immediately and run a thorough virus scan on your machine. Periodically upgrade. Upgrades for almost all types of software are released periodically in order to ensure the optimum performance of both the programs and your system. This applies not only to the applications that we use daily, but also to those that run in the background, especially the drivers. Upgrades and periodic maintenance can also help improve system performance greatly by eliminating existing and potential issues, especially the infamous DLL, SYS and EXE errors. Upon onset, these issues can wreak as much havoc as a viral infection, so it is best to prevent them from happening in the first place. Sometimes, upgrading to more recent software versions can offer increased compatibility with your system, allowing the program to fully and effectively utilize all necessary system resources. This makes for both a faster and smoother experience. Even the entire operating system needs a regular upgrade. This helps not only to optimize processes but also to close out any security holes or possible malfunctions that have been detected in previous software releases. It is true that computers are complex equipment, but we wouldn't have to delve into the more technical steps of repairing issues if they are regularly taken care of. Following these simple steps would be the perfect start. One of the main reasons is the accumulation of junk files. These have to be regularly deleted because they tend to accumulate with each PC use. However, you should be careful when deleting files because you may end up deleting crucial system files. What are junk files, where do they come from and how do they accumulate? Junk files are unnecessary and are regularly created by the system with each computer use. For example, when creating a word document, Microsoft also creates a temporary file to keep things running smoothly. These also help in creating an automatic backup of the document in progress. When browsing the Internet, the browser also automatically and temporarily downloads internet information. These are saved in order to help to open the same browser or web pages faster the next time. The computer also automatically creates and saves these even when simply powering on or shutting down. These do help in making the system faster and more efficient. However, these are only helpful for the current time of use. After a document is saved and closed, these are no longer very much of help. The same is true with browser temporary files. They tend to accumulate over time because they are not automatically deleted by the system. They become junk files- unnecessary and clutter the system. They also tend to take up a lot of precious disk space if they are not regularly deleted and allowed to accumulate. How to Delete Junk Files Freeing disk space 1. Click on the "Start" button to open the Start Menu. For Windows 8, go to the Start screen and type "Control Panel" and select its icon when it appears on the search results. 2. The "Control Panel" window will open. 3. Select "System and Security" tab. 4. Under the section "Administrative Tools", click the button "Free up disk space". 5. A message window will appear as the system searches for potential files that can be deleted. 6. After a few seconds, the window for Disk Cleanup should open. It shows a list of files that can be deleted, how much space each occupies and the total disk space all they are using. 7. If unsure which to delete, Windows has already checked a few safe ones. These include "Temporary Internet Files" that contain stored old web pages used previously to speed up browsing, "Downloaded Program Files" that are helper files that temporarily speed up viewing certain web pages, and "Thumbnails" that are small icons for videos, documents, music and pictures. 8. Once the files to be deleted are chosen, select the "OK" button. Disk Cleanup Another to remove junk files is through the following steps: 1. Open the Start menu. 2. Choose "All Programs". 3. Choose "Accessories". 4. Select "System Tools". 5. Click "Disk Cleanup". 6. A window will open where the list of computer drives can be seen. Click on which drive to clean, then click the "OK" button. 7. The same window as the one above will open, where the list of potential ones to be deleted are shown. Tick the box next to the ones to be deleted then click "OK". Uninstalling Programs There are some programs that are unnecessary or haven't been used for a while. These can also be considered as junk files that clutter disk space since they are no longer being used. Uninstall them with the following steps: * Open the Start menu by clicking on the "Start" button. * Choose "Control Panel". * Choose "Add or Remove Programs" * A window will list all the installed programs in the computer. * Check the ones that haven't been used for a while or ones that have never even been used. To check if a program is being used or not, check the information on the right side of the screen, under the column "Last Used On". Anything that has not been used for quite some time should be deleted. * Click on the program and choose the "Uninstall/Change" tab at the upper portion of the window. Shortcuts The computer often creates shortcuts to make accessing in the future faster and easier. These shortcuts also take up valuable disk space. Delete them by following these easy steps: * Open "My Computer". * Browse the "Documents and Settings" folder. * Locate the "Owner" and then "Tools". * Select the "Folder Options", then the "View" tab. * Choose "Show Hidden Files and Folders" then the "OK" button. Select "MY Recent Documents". * A list of shortcut icons will appear. * Click on all the shortcuts and press the "Delete" key. Choose "Yes" to delete all the selected shortcuts. These steps should free a huge chunk of disk space and help the PC to run faster. If not, other issues may be causing the slowing down such as viruses. Check for these and other possible problems. You have to consider things such as the quality, design, longevity, the energy consumption and of course the maintenance issue. These are just the basic factors you need to consider when choosing proper outdoor lighting. There are basically two main types of flood lights, the incandescent bulbs and fluorescent types. Although 100W LED flood lights are becoming increasingly popular, they are still not that mainstream for this type of fixtures. The Incandescent type of bulb is a basic type of lighting. The advantage is that it is inexpensive. It is definitely cheaper than other lighting fixtures out there. Also, its light quality is unparalleled. This might work better in outdoor spaces especially in lighting up a larger area. But, if you are after diffused lighting even in your outdoor space, the usage of incandescent outdoor wall lights and flood lights might not be the best alternative. Another thing about using incandescent is its energy consumption. As a lighting source for outdoor space, you expect it to work overnight. But the problem is that it might cost you a huge amount of money. This is where the advantages of fluorescent lights come in. If you are looking for outdoor weather-resistant lighting, the metal halide bulbs will come handy. This can also be used for outdoor wall lights which have been equipped with durable materials so that they can withstand even the most extreme weather conditions. Not all of the flood lights in the market will give you the advantages you are looking for. But then again, you can mix and match lighting fixtures to get the desired effect you want without spending too much money. You have to access what sort of lighting fixture will work better in different areas of your outdoor space. This will create depth in the area however will still work in offering more than adequate illumination. You should be able to find reliable lighting fixture sellers online. You can choose from an array of 100W LED flood lighting bulbs and start researching their individual features. Then you can make comparisons between these alternatives and then choose which one can offer you the most benefits when it comes to durability, lighting quality and efficiency. You have to ensure that the flood light is simple to install. It can be a bit tricky when installing outdoors, however if you do not wish to spend more money hiring electricians, you should ensure that you are buying a fixture which is easier to install in outdoor spaces. Of course, safety is a critical issue. You definitely do not wish the wires exposed for children to trip over. You also do not want the wires to be prone to electrical problems, or even fire, so make sure you buy a fixture with safety properties. It is important that when you are looking for outdoor 100W LED flood lights, you really need your outdoor space to come to life at night. As such, you have to choose and make that the flood lights you are purchasing are up to expectation. *********************** ARTICLE END *********************** - To distribute your articles go to http://www.isnare.com/distribution.php - For more free-reprint articles go to http://www.isnare.com |

Aside from making your home more aesthetically pleasing, In recent times, indoor gardening is becoming extremely popular among many households because of its many advantages to the indoor environment. Aside from making your home more aesthetically pleasing, this also helps in making the environment more comfortable and peaceful both for your family and the modern age has certainly brought along many different alternatives when it comes to designing an interior. This is really a matter of lighting, and situating proper elements to shine through and brighten up a residential house area. Whether it is a study or living area, you will surely find that getting a LED high bay lamp is a crucial piece to tying together the elegance and decor of any major room. Electricity: One of the advantage which you will notice about this type of light bulbs, is that they produce more light for less. The consumption of such electrical current is far lesser than other lighting bulbs, that is why you will end up spending a lot lesser on your monthly electricity bills. The electricity bills will lessen over time, and as you end up changing out the rest of the house light bulbs, and lighting fixtures, you will definitely see great reduction in the expenses costs in your home or office. Heat: The benefit of installing LED high bay lights is that there will be lesser heat conducted. Traditional lighting products can create lots of heat which can create an uncomfortable temperature in an enclosed area. As such, high heat which is conducted from traditional lights can really create problems with mold, allergies, and much more. The heat that is created with this type of lighting is very small at best. Length of Operation: You'll be quite delighted to know that your overall costs will go down, but another great reason why you want to invest in this type of solution is that it can last for multiple years without needing to change things up. The LED tube lamp is presently overtaking the fluorescent light bulbs which have been a mainstay in many businesses and kitchens for many years. Although the amount of light produced has made light bulbs consistently a choice for areas needing bright lighting, the LED lighting has proven to meet all these challenges. LED lighting is available in most of the same tube sizes and shapes as traditional fluorescent lighting. One of the great benefits of switching out the fluorescent bulbs for LED is the fact that the process is quite simple. The LED lights is able to fit into the prongs of the fluorescent lighting bulbs and the plug-in replacement is easy. The areas where this lighting is usually used are normally active for several hours on a daily basis and are costly to utilize. The maintenance and repair of these bulbs can be very high and energy costs can make them cost prohibitive. Additionally, the bulbs contain mercury which can be dangerous and harmful if the bulb breaks. The LED tube lighting is a high efficiency lighting bulb which uses less than than sixty percent of the energy that an incandescent light bulb uses. The standard tube replacements use only 14-24 watts of energy and in fact last from 50000 to 100000 hours before they should be replaced. They have great color quality and the same color dynamics as their counterpart. The tubes have a plastic tube housing and do not need the energy sucking ballast of the fluorescent. With an operating temperature of 100 degrees, the light bulb does not get as hot as other lighting bulbs and normally has a life span of up to eight times than that of a normal incandescent bulb. The tube is manufactured with a long silicon substrate which has several LEDs mounted on it. The substrate is enclosed in a glass tube and ready for installation. It does not contain toxic chemicals such as mercury and also provide an environmentally friendly means to provide light which is equal to fluorescent light bulbs. Talking to an expert who has knowledge and the know-how in the different types of lighting available and their impact on the environment will be much helpful. Definitely, they will be able to provide important information which will help you to make the best decision about what type of LED lamp will be most effective in your home or office. LED lighting downlight bulbs need lesser energy in their manufacture than fluorescent light tubes, and only 3% of the energy they will consume over their life expectancy is consumed in their manufacture, and they are also produced from non toxic materials. The light tubes are made from polycarbonate, a material that is more robust and durable than glass, so accidents will not need special cleanup procedures. Although LED technology is more costly than existing fluorescent lights at face value, their lifespan is about 10 times as long, while consuming 65% lesser energy. In most general purpose lighting applications the additional cost of the LED technology will more than pay for itself within the first 18 months. *********************** ARTICLE END *********************** - To distribute your articles go to http://www.isnare.com/distribution.php - For more free-reprint articles go to http://www.isnare.com |

It is a great way to save money on electricity by installing LED tube lights and also get hazardous fluorescent light bulbs out of your home or office. But, most LED tube lights on the market presently cannot just be directly installed in an existing fluorescent fixture. You will have to make some simple modifications to the fixture to properly install the light bulbs. The good news is that installing LED tube lights in an existing fluorescent fixture is quite simple. Additionally, you should be able to purchase fixtures designed for LED tube lights in the near future, and in fact they should be cheaper than the equivalent fluorescent light fixtures. Fluorescent fixtures are in fact designed to support specific types and size of fluorescent light tubes. A fluorescent tube is incorporated into a fluorescent lighting system that consists of two or three main components, which is the fluorescent lamps, the ballasts and the starter systems. Additionally, the system for a tube lamp includes a lamp holder and a switch. Depending on the particular fluorescent lighting system, the starter may be a replaceable component, a starter may not be required, or the starter function may be integrated into the ballast. The starting function may also rely on the physical design of the fixture. To retrofit a fluorescent fixture to support a LED tube light, the ballast must be disconnected. You have to ensure that the LED replacement tube lights are the correct size for the fixture. You also need to remember that when servicing a fluorescent fixture or lamp, the electrical power to the entire fixture should be disconnected. This is not always practical in situations where a huge number of fixtures are controlled from the same power control (such as in open office areas). In such cases, insulating gloves and a non-metallic ladder should be used if the fixtures must be serviced when the power is present. You will need a few simple tools, including a wire cutter and wire stripper, a pair of pliers, a screwdriver, and a few wire nuts for reconnecting the wires once you have removed the ballast. Once the traditional light bulbs are removed from the lamp holders and the electricity to the fixture is turned off, you will have to remove the reflector which is located behind the light bulbs and provides a housing for the wiring and ballast which lie behind it. Typically, it is quite simple to remove the reflector or cover, however if it is not clear how to do this, you should consult the documentation from the fixture manufacturer. Nowadays, high quality LED lighting bulbs have surpassed the normal conventional lights when it comes to energy consumption efficiency. The reason is that LED consume lesser energy makes them a great lighting alternative for use in companies and for residential houses as this would assist in reducing the electricity bill payable for putting lights on by a great portion. LED lighting in fact use only about 30 percent of energy which fluorescent light bulbs use to produce a particular level of brightness. They also save you a large sum of money as they last much longer than fluorescent light tubes. *********************** ARTICLE END *********************** - To distribute your articles go to http://www.isnare.com/distribution.php - For more free-reprint articles go to http://www.isnare.com |

No doubt, therefore, by making transition from one lighting system to another, you could help save the otherwise vulnerable environment. As far as home lighting is concerned, new strides are being made not only in energy efficiency, but also the longevity of light sources. Herein lies the strength of LED lighting systems. Also, just by just changing one of your regular incandescent light bulbs to a LED light, you can really assist to protect the environment and save money. LED Light are diodes which emit visible light when electricity is applied, much like a light bulb. LEDs are used as indicator lamps in many devices, and are known to offer latest technology lighting solutions for modern residential lighting. LED lights does saves you energy cost and money. In fact, LED lighting solutions have come a long way from being used only for notebooks (laptops) and flashlights to presently being utilised in parking areas, street lights, offices, hotels, public buildings, restaurants and signboards, etc. The advantages of LEDs are myriad indeed. When people refer to LED's the first thing that normally springs to mind is those small lights that come in a huge range of colours used to indicate settings on devices. These days you get LED TV's and monitors as well. LED technologies are rapidly improving and now days you can get the LED bulb and downlight. An LED downlight is capable of producing the same amount of illumination that a normal 50W halogen light would produce for only 10W. This means 5 times less energy used, 5 times more money saved on lighting bills and 5 times less harm down to the environment. The lights in our hoses are normally halogen bulbs and most of them last for only 2500 hours before dying. A LED light bulb can be so durable it can last for at least 25,000 hours with some capable of lasting for 50,000 hours. They are also designed with safety in mind running significantly cooler than halogens, containing no toxic materials (like incandescent bulbs contain mercury) and have very little glass that can shatter and spread into small particles. What often stops people from using LED downlights? The main problem is that LED down lights are significantly more costly initially than normal downlights or halogens. Most LED downlights start around $40 per unit where are incandescent bulbs can be just $2 at your local electrician. Also most people are unsure how to go about buying and installing LED down lights for the homes as making such changes are often troublesome and people would rather stick with what they are most comfortable with. Although incandescent light bulbs are other options which may be cheaper and LED lights are the most expensive in the beginning, in the long term it will certainly pay off and save you some money. Also because of the long lifespan of LED lights such as LED down lights, LED flood lights and LED circular lights, you will almost never have to worry about replacing them or getting a professional to do it so you can possibly save yourself some money there as well. *********************** ARTICLE END *********************** - To distribute your articles go to http://www.isnare.com/distribution.php - For more free-reprint articles go to http://www.isnare.com |

Because of the low amounts of energy and negligible impact on the environment, it is easy to see LED lighting replacing all of the light bulbs in use presently. Because of the low amounts of energy and negligible impact on the environment, it is easy to see LED lighting replacing all of the light bulbs in use presently. Although the potential for LED lighting products goes back nearly 100 years, the development for practical implication has only been evident in the past decades. That is why fluorescent lighting has gradually come to replace traditional lighting sources, LED can take the progress one step further, even outperforming the fluorescent light bulbs by a significant margin. Although understanding the specific reasons for LED lighting's superiority may take a degree in science, however for the layperson the practical applications of this type of technology will be more than clear. The great benefits of LED lights can be broken down into a few categories. The Energy Efficiency: Energy efficiency means less resources used, less involvement and less money for the consumer. The breakdown is quite easy when put into terms of wattage. Take the example of the power of a 60 Watt incandescent bulb, which is probably the most common around the house, used in lamps, overhead lights and most fixtures. To summon the same of type of impact in lighting, you can use an LED bulb of as little as 7 Watts. Functionality: LED lighting offers many more uses and can compare with any competing source in terms of it's light quality. There are various types of LED light, ones which offer different tints and brightness factors. As such, the technology is compatible with decorative lighting used in chandeliers or holiday window displays, instances in which the look of the lighting is the key. LED lights can create a color scheme in fact without using filters and can be used in place of even the tiniest bulbs. Also, the use of LED is much more versatile than fluorescent bulbs. While fluorescents had trouble with frequent shifts in power -- or turning off and on several times within an hour -- LED lighting does not have the same problem. In fact, LED lighting is very compatible with dimming. As such, it is clear that the functionality will probably put LED lights over the top. Environmental Impact: The LED lighting is going to consume lesser energy with the same amount of lighting used. In order to generate the power, less of the environment's resources are going to be used. Figuring out your energy bills on a monthly basis, you will probably guess that 30% of cost and impact is concerned with light. Also, the amount of pollutants deriving from LED lighting is very negligible, especially as compared to fluorescent bulbs. Fluorescent lighting is notorious for the mercury content used in its bulbs. Lifetime: Incandescent light bulbs are known to last from 1,000 to 2,000 hours for a full lifetime. Fluorescent light bulbs was justifiably celebrated for expanding that number. Normally, fluorescent lights will last as long as 15,000 hours. You will probably be stunned to hear that LED lighting can blow any number out of the water: Best life spans are estimated at 80,000 hours. In the world of electricity, that may be hard to foresee, however probably if you change a light bulb yearly or even two years and multiply that by 30 or 40, you have to figure that an LED has the potential to last for decades. *********************** ARTICLE END *********************** - To distribute your articles go to http://www.isnare.com/distribution.php - For more free-reprint articles go to http://www.isnare.com |

The global energy production accounts to more than 19% from its total supply for luminary purposes. It may not be a good news for us as energy supplied to us is not being utilized the way it should be and possess a threat on our future indicating that there would be no or very less natural sources left on earth that can be burnt to generate electricity. With this concern, various researchers had been working for decades to develop such technologies that reduce electricity consumption and are much more efficient and durable than the old luminary systems that waste energy. The Advent Of LED (Light Emitting diodes) Systems in the late 60s, were commercially launched for uses in TVs, telephones and watches for signal transmission indication purposes. Although these lights were unusually expensive and thus were not being launched as an individual product in the market until in 1994 a Japan based company successfully conducted a test in which the blue and white LED bulb worked perfectly on grounds of domestic and commercial use and was immediately commissioned for mass production. LED lighting system is suitable for use in any condition, whether talking in terms of geography and climate. Let's find out how these are much more efficient in saving your electricity costs: Durability: This is the main aspect of a LED light bulb that makes it overcome the flaws of other lighting technologies like the Incandescent, fluorescent and Tungsten. These bulbs are shock resistant which makes them less prone to getting burnt if bumped or banged into something. They can work at a maximum of 80 degree Celsius and as low as -20 degree Celsius. Maintenance Costs: With such durability these bulbs do not need any maintenance for long time. That is why it saves lot of your money. Also, these bulbs run for an awfully long period. A common LED light bulb runs for about 50,000 hours. That's about 5 times a fluorescent bulb works and almost 50 times an Incandescent bulb lasts. Long Term Benefits: You may still find these light bulbs priced higher than other bulbs but they would save you a lot of money in the long run. As such, it is better to pay once and forget about it rather than getting stuck with some other type of bulb that you would have to replace frequently. Besides, it would only cost you an average of $50 after using an LED for 50,000 hours, which is about 7 years. This would certainly get your electricity bills to cause you less worry. As such, buying LED lights would ensure you a long term benefit. Eco-Friendly: Saving money is good thing however it is more important that you contribute something to the environment. LED lights enable you to reduce the carbon foot print with a great margin. Led lights use 80% of the current supplied in them to produce light more than any other lighting technology. This saves a lot of energy and as such the demand for electricity reduces, making power stations to reduce power generation and that controls the pollution coming out of the plants. Also, these bulbs do not emit any harmful gases in the form of heat or any other medium. *********************** ARTICLE END *********************** - To distribute your articles go to http://www.isnare.com/distribution.php - For more free-reprint articles go to http://www.isnare.com |
