Article Title: Challenges Facing African Airports Authory Service Delivery.

There are several airports with monopoly service providers in ground handling, catering and/or fuel supply which often breeds inefficiency and are associated with high costs.

It is critical that the market be liberalized, bringing in more players to encourage competition and boost efficiency in service delivery. Among the airports in Africa with monopoly ground handling companies are Antananarivo, Bamako, Banjul, Brazzaville, Dakar, Entebbe, Kigali, Kinshasha, Lome, Manzini, Maputo, Maseru, Monrovia, Mogadishu, Niamey, Nouakchott, Windhoek and Sao Tome island.

    Peace

During the period after independence, the African continent was well-known for instability. Coup detas, wars of independence and civil wars were quite common. Because of that environment of instability, this constrained the development of airlines in some countries.

Fortunately, as the African Union celebrates 50 years of its existence, the incidences of coups and civil wars in Africa have substantially reduced. The number of countries holding democratic elections has significantly increased.

Relatively democratic countries are presently largely the norm rather than the exception. This bodes well for the development of civil aviation on the continent.

    Aviation Safety

Safety levels of African aviation over the years have been below world standards. The rates of accidents on the continent almost always exceed those registered elsewhere in the world.

Most of the accidents have taken place in those States involved in civil war. For instance, in the 1990s and up to 2003, Angola was among the countries with the highest accident rates. During that time, the country was largely involved in civil war. Following a return to peace, Angola today boasts a vibrant aviation industry with a good safety record.

Currently, DRC and Sudan account for the majority of accidents on the continent and those countries are currently involved in civil wars. During civil strife, it is difficult for the authorities to carry out effective safety oversight. Western sanctions on the Sudan are also not helping improve safety as it is difficult to purchase equipment and expertise needed to improve the operating environment.

Safety standards on the continent are however, improving, the main reason being significant reduction of conflicts and also the increased desire by States to ensure international best practices by the industry.

Perception that African airlines are unsafe has made some travelers choose non-African carriers. This is despite the fact that Africa has some of the safest airlines. The standard of safety by many African airlines (members of AFRAA, AASA and IATA) is comparable to any international airline anywhere, yet because of some isolated incidents largely in the DRC and Sudan, the entire continent is tagged "unsafe".

African aviation can only grow and prosper if the level of safety is up to world standard. This requires that all countries meet the stipulated ICAO standards and recommended practices in safety and security.

This way, accident levels should be down to world average rates. A safety culture should be inculcated into the mind-sets of all African aviation stakeholders .The poor safety perception in the continent is among the major reasons for the tiny proportion of African aviation worldwide.

    Improved Infrastructure

Infrastructure in many African States is deficient, dilapidated and not coping with the growing airline industry. Although there are a significant number of exceptions, there is nevertheless a need to develop and expand airports, runways and air navigation services facilities.

Airports should be open 24 hours a day and not just during daylight hours. There is a need for the relevant authorities to be proactive and plan for the expected rapid expansion of African aviation.

The industry is behind the world in the adoption of cost effective technologies .It is important to take advantage of the latest information communication technologies, to minimize operating costs. Airlines also need to modernize their fleets not only to reduce operating costs, but to reduce harmful emissions.

The application of technology is one big driver of Africa's economic growth. Mobile phones usage is widespread in the continent. More than 600-million Africans have one, and a significant number of Africans, perhaps 10% of those, have access to mobile –internet services. The phones have a wide range of applications including mobile banking and information on airline prices and schedules.

    Environmental Obligations

The issue of climate change is expected to be among the priority issues in the coming years.

To reduce emissions it will be necessary for African carriers to continually invest in modern aircraft which produce lower emissions.

It is envisaged that small carriers will not have the resources to carry out such critical investment, hence the need for consolidation so that airlines are large enough to be credit worthy and attract financing at concessional rates to continue modernizing their fleets.

It is also important that those African States that have not yet acceded to the Cape Town Convention do so to facilitate their airlines access to low cost capital for fleet renewal.

    Regulatory Environment

The regulatory environment worldwide continues to change rapidly in response to evolving situations and challenges in areas such as safety, security, passenger rights and slot allocations.

Also as the European Union operates as one aviation block for purposes of negotiating traffic rights with third parties, the African Union has the duty to develop institutions to mirror its counter-parts in other parts of the world.

This will ensure that negotiations will be carried out in a fair and balanced manner.

The regulatory authorities will need to develop expertise and sophistication to deal with emerging complex issues such as environmental protection, consumer rights and slot allocations.

    Changing Market Dynamics

Because of the growing business between Africa and emerging economies, some African airlines are beginning to change focus.

Rather than continue to operate to traditional European and Middle East destinations where competition is keen, they are exploring new markets within the continent and to Asia, North and South America.

Currently there is growing trade and investment between Africa, Asia and South America particularly with countries like China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Brazil. Indeed, some African airlines such as KQ, ET, SAA and MS have operations to a number of Asian destinations.

There is a window of opportunity to increase and consolidate these operations to these growing markets before airlines from Asia turn their attention to Africa .On the South American routes only African airlines currently fly there. The airlines operating there include TAAG Angola Airlines (DT) and SAA but soon to be followed by ET and KQ.

To North America, six African airlines currently operate there as against two US carriers.

African airlines are also focusing on improving their product offering, including developing alliance relations with other regional and intercontinental airlines to be able to serve markets to which they do not operate their own equipment.

For example, Air Seychelles (HM) and KQ are partnering with Etihad Airways to extend their market reach. This coupled with the investments in modern fleet and in capacity development is helping Africa cope with the growing competition.

here is more than meets the eye when it come to losing weight. Sure, one may look good after shedding those extra pounds, but that is just one of the perks of losing weight. Losing weight can not only make a person look better and feel more confident but it can also drastically improve your health. Being healthy is fundamental for living a longer and happier life. In the world we live in today its hard to fit the gym into our schedules along with our budgets. Monthly memberships, personal trainers, diet pills and other supplements are just too much to keep up with while trying to live a normal and happy life. Its true, losing weight can improve a person's confidence and happiness, because you feel better about yourself. When a person feels good they become more active and determined. When a person feels like they have a hot body, they eat and act like they have a hot body.

Overweight people have it hard. Lets face it no one wants to be overweight. There are many disadvantages to being overweight. One of those disadvantages is being at higher risk for many illnesses. One health problem that is linked to being overweight is having high blood pressure. Having high blood pressure is a serious condition that can be fatal. Heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer and depression are other health issues linked to being overweight. Being overweight can take a drastic toll on ones confidence levels and self esteem. It's a fact that people that are overweight are more than likely to be picked on or humiliated more than those who are not. When a person is depressed because of their weight it makes it even harder to get motivated into becoming active and workout. If you want to know more about this topic, you can read the tips and guide below.

With the high energy weight loss programs on the market today it can make it feel impossible for someone who is overweight to lose weight and get fit.

It seems like most of these weight loss programs today are designed for people who are already in shape or close to being in shape. Dance workout video after dance workout video and high endurance muscle confusion system after another, one must ask; how does a normal person or even an over weight person get fit these days? Many people have said that these weight loss programs have actually made them feel even more insecure about themselves and have completely gave up on losing weight all together. That is because someone who is over weight thinks different that a person that is not over weight. Most of these programs just set you up for failure by promising you to lose so many pounds in so many days and in the end you just end up stressed out and depressed because you were unable to accomplish an unrealistic goal.

You know summer is about to wind down when Labor Day is around the corner. Despite it being one of the busiest US Holidays, bus tours from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon will be running on a regular schedule.

    Busy Holiday

Based on last year's numbers, I expect many of these bus trips to sell out. Please take that into account as you plan your coach ride. For best results, I usually recommend travelers book their trips at least a week in advance.

I'm not sure how pricing will be this holiday, except that it's quite normal for it to more expensive than non-holiday days due to the increase in demand. There's ways to get around that, and one of my favorite is to book my trips online.

I don't recommend purchasing your trip from one of the "big box sites." Instead, go direct to the tour supplier. These are the business entities that own and operate the actual trip and are in a position to offer some truly great specials, promotions and discounts.

    From Vegas

Bus tours depart from Las Vegas once a day around 7 a. M. They go to the West Rim and the South Rim of the National Park. If you go to the former, you'll be back around 8 p. M. Do the later and you'll return to your Strip hotel around 9 p. M.

Which rim is right for you? Really depends if are into attractions or natural beauty. The West Rim is loaded with things to do, and it's the home of the Grand Canyon Skywalk, the world's largest all-glass cantilevered bridge.

Further, it's only at the West Rim where you can take a helicopter to the bottom of the Canyon. There's even a package that lets you add a Colorado Boat ride into the mix. Thus if you are looking to explore the Park's nooks and crannies, a West Rim trip might be for you.

    South Rim

The South Rim, which experts refer to as the "official" Grand Canyon, is where you go for natural scenic beauty. It's also a lot cooler in terms of temperature because it sits at an elevation of 7,000 feet. There's an option to add a helicopter ride to your package, too. Most, however, settle for the basic package.

Bus tours are typically all-inclusive. This means they pretty much come with everything, like free hotel pick up and drop off, lunch and all taxes and fees. Many find this very attractive as it lets them focus on preparing themselves for a trip of a lifetime without having to get bogged down in trip logistics.

Folks often ask if these buses are comfortable and the answer is a resounding "yes." These are state-of-the-art coaches and they are equipped with on-board restrooms, recliner style seats, excellent climate control and plasma TVs. The suspension has also been upgraded so for the most part you'll never feel a bump in the road, including the dirt road segment of the drive to the West Rim.

    Conclusion

Before you know it, Labor Day will be here. If you plan on taking a bus tour anytime around that holiday, I strongly advise booking your trip in advance and online (it's always cheaper on the Web). As for which rim to visit, that's a judgment call as to whether you want attractions or scenic beauty. Whatever you decide upon, I can assure you that a coach trip to the Canyon is one of the most memorable things you can do while visiting Las Vegas.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Original article by Jamie McIntyre published in 21st Century News.

Local businesses should be given the opportunity to grow as small business is the engine room of an economy. Helping small to medium businesses expand and grow will help create more jobs and profits for local regions.

As an entrepreneur I recognise the significance of small businesses. Over the years I have been the founder of 12 businesses and own half a dozen farms in New England, Northern NSW where I grew up which has helped me develop a greater understanding of how important businesses are to communities.

A government that routinely attacks the business community and attacks Australia's wealth creators is not productive or necessary.

They can hardly claim to represent Australian workers as to look after workers you must look after small to medium businesses that employ most workers.

The other problem in Australia is that only 16 per cent or 33 of the 226 Federal MP's have any entrepreneurial or executive or management level experience.

This is something that needs to change.

Unfortunately, we have career politicians most of whom have never worked a day in their life in a real job or never started a business and created any jobs.

I have created over a dozen companies and employed hundreds and hundreds of Australians, plus as a leading educator inspired trained and helped tens of thousands of entrepreneurs create jobs.

Having a PhD in results is more valuable than those career politicians with a PhD in theory. Many of these politicians think they are above the average Australian with their elitism and political snobbery.

We need people who have produced results in their own lives and not have a political scenario with unionists on one side of politics and lawyers on the other. People with financial skill sets and entrepreneurial experience are the ones who should be managing the economy of the country.

The current economic situation that has a debt of $274 billion and rising is a matter of concern.

Despite going through one of the greatest commodities boom in our nation's history; instead of having a large sovereign wealth fund akin to Norway and Dubai, we not only have no money in a fund but a $274 billion debt.

It is apparent that the unions and this Government aren't looking at the interest of the Australian workers.

To truly represent Australian workers as mentioned you must be supportive of small to medium size businesses as they create jobs and if they achieve long-term profitability it leads to long term sustainable pay rises for workers.

I also don't support our country's welfare addiction.

It should not be about supporting hand-outs, it should be about hand-ups. Why destroy peoples' lives through welfare when business start-up grants and up-skilling education is the key to creating thousands of new businesses and hundreds of thousands of new jobs and getting people off the addiction and soul destroying effects of welfare.

We live in a rich country that already has the money to have the best roads, best health services and the best education systems and the best infrastructure.

The only reason we don't is due to the sheer wastage in all 3 levels of Government and bureaucracy where taxpayers' money is routinely abused and wasted funding "fat cat managers "in the Government who produce little value.

The luck will run out for the lucky country and if we don't get rid of (quoting Arnold Schwarzenegger) the 'economic girlie men', Australia will face an uncertain future that will see millions of Australian jobs outsourced overseas at a rapid rate and a rapid fall on living standards for many.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was unable to manage our economy through the greatest commodities boom ever, racking up $274 billion in debt largely from sheer wastage and failed policy.

How will Rudd manage in the future especially with a risk of China imploding, especially since this Government has done everything to kill the golden goose ie the mining industry?

Australia is an over taxed, poorly financially run, mismanaged country however with massive potential.

It has been reported in the Australian and Financial Review recently that 96% of the windfall $190 billion the mining boom has added to Government coffers has been squandered.

This economic destruction of our wealth must end.

My vision is to move Australia into the 21st Century and I suggest we only elect those with a PhD in results because in a globally competitive world Australia will need to start producing much better results.

Are we just a quarry selling everything we have and spending like there is no tomorrow or are we going to become more than that and achieve our full potential?

That will require real change; real leadership and real results and it seems as if both major parties have not and will not deliver that change.

The time for change I believe is now.

If we don't change, I would no longer bet on Australia remaining the great country it is.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Original article by Jamie McIntyre published in 21st Century News.

Jamie McIntyre who has built million dollar property portfolio's for himself and his clients, shares his views on the Australian Property Market:

I am often asked about my views on the Australian Property Market and I am happy to share my belief that within the next 3-4 years we will witness another property boom.

Investors who wish to do well financially with property investing should do their best to ideally buy at least two properties as soon as possible in order to prevent missing out on this boom and having to wait perhaps another decade to witness such growth again.

Generally the best strategy with real estate is to buy and never sell. Over a 10-20 year period you will do well. Even if you purchase properties in the worst areas, more often than not you will still make money. However, if you buy quality property, in quality areas at a good price, then over 20 years you can become extremely wealthy.

Let's use an example of you purchasing just two properties

For instance, if the properties are worth $400,000 each today ( below the average price for most Australian houses), in ten years these properties if bought well should be worth double.

Therefore, now you have $800,000 properties purchased which ten years later would be worth $1.6 million total and you would end up making $800,000 in capital growth plus received tax benefits and rents that also tend to double every 7-9 years. Therefore in 7-9 years these properties will be cashflow positive and the debt will have reduced boosting your equity from $800,000 above $1million .

The reality is that after ten years you basically are a self-made millionaire with $1 million plus in equity.

Let's do another ten years to the 20 year mark:

In 20 years, these two properties will approximately be worth $3.2million and no doubt largely paid off by increasing rents. That's a nice retirement plan you have created simply because you got educated and took action with just two properties 20 years ago.

Critics might suggest that property doesn't always double every ten years and they maybe right, as often it can double every 7 years or less .If that were to occur during this period you would have approximately over $6 million in property value.

However, let's say things don't go as well as planned and it takes 15 years to double because that is a possibility in an extremely poor property market and perhaps if you choose a poor property.

In that case, after 20 years your two properties are worth approximately $2.2 million.

Is this better than the pension plan ?

Or a managed fund your Financial Planner, (who probably has never invested before) has pitched to you?

Or your struggling superannuation fund making your financial planner rich with the fees?

Property is by far the most superior asset class and almost every self-made millionaire in this country would agree with this. I have only ever touched shares to write calls over them (which I termed share renting) to supplement the cashflow from my property portfolio and speed up the above plan. However, property and business has always been the cornerstone of my wealth.

It is best not to try and get rich from shares alone as it will never compete with real estate.

Here is the plan with property for those who want to become seriously wealthy in the next 10 to 20 years.

You don't have to stop at two properties though. There is a 'buy ten properties in ten years' plan and by using that you're growing equity in your initial properties and can use it as a deposit on a new property to continue buying 2-10 properties over the next decade.

In 20 years you can possibly have $10-$15million in equity plus.

If that sounds too daunting or too good to be true, then you should focus on getting your first couple of investment properties. Normally the first steps are the hardest, so educate yourself and take action.

Remember you don't need a financial planner, you simply need a financial education.

Acquiring finance or just knowing what you can or can't afford is usually what holds many back.

Your first step should be to complete a financial fact finder in order to access some free qualified help.

However, you should avoid making obvious errors. For instance, don't buy high rise apartments in Docklands, Melbourne or Gold Coast as they are the worst property investments.

Generally it is best not to touch large, high rise apartments as you have hundreds of competitors on your step and if one sells cheaply it devalues all the others. Moreover, Body Corp rates often are atrocious and a waste of money.

The other venture I have been investing in for last 3 years is US Property.

    Why?

It is ridiculously cheap and rising in value. Also, you can access rentals of 15-20% in some places and in some cases as much as 46% pa in rental returns.

That is $46,000 for every $100,000 invested or $460,000 pa for every $1 million invested.

Don't bother asking your financial planner about accessing these kinds of investments as they wouldn't be have the knowledge as they aren't generally investors.

Some would also question if such an investment is risky.

Every investment carries risk yet if you are educated and learn off others who are already doing it you can lower that risk. You just have to make an effort to learn.

So, will you be taking advantage of the next Australian Property boom coming along with the US housing recovery?

Your family and your country need you to become a smart investor and invest into your future.

It is good for you and good for our entire country.

    Make it happen!

    No excuses!!

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

If you are in Tampa and considering your options for emergency physicians, the first thought – naturally – might be turning to a hospital emergency room. This makes perfect sense, especially considering the wealth of renowned hospitals in the Tampa Bay region, starting with Tampa General in the heart of downtown Tampa. No matter where you might be in the region, a well-staffed emergency department is never more than a few minutes' drive away.

The relatively large number of well-run hospitals is a product, in part, of Central Florida's long-standing role as a retirement haven. Pinellas County, in particular, has long been a destination for retirees, and the medical care required to keep all of those retirees healthy into their Golden Years has followed. It was a simple matter of supply and demand. Unfortunately, as the demands on the healthcare system have increased with the aging of the Baby Boomer generation, even Tampa Bay's superior emergency healthcare system has not been able to keep up. In response, a new industry has begun to flourish. Not only in the Tampa Bay area, but throughout the country, urgent care centers have become more prevalent.

An urgent care center is not an emergency department. It does not exist as a place to go to seek treatment for life-threatening conditions. Rather, it is a clinic, of sorts, where patients can go during regular business hours for treatment of conditions such as:

    • Colds and flu

    • Burns or lacerations

    • Ear or eye infections

    • Ligament sprains or muscle strains

    • Rashes

    • Allergies

    • Broken bones

    • And more

In most cases, an urgent care center accepts health insurance from most carriers, and they offer some of the same services as a hospital emergency department. In fact, an urgent care center might almost be considered a cross between a primary care physician and a hospital ER. That said, there are several conditions that are potentially life threatening that should only be treated at an ER. These include:

    • Chest pain

    • Severe abdominal pain

    • Vomiting blood

    • Shortness of breath not related to asthma

    • Sudden blurred vision or dizziness

    • Seizures

    • Deep cuts that won't stop bleeding

    • Severe burns

    • And more

Most urgent care clinics in Tampa are staffed by board-certified physicians, as well as medical assistants, nurse practitioners, and other medical personnel who are perfectly qualified to work in an emergency department if they so choose. The key difference, of course, is that with rare exceptions, urgent care clinics keep regular working hours. That is to say, many urgent care centers are open during the weekdays – perhaps into the early evenings – and only occasionally on weekends. Some might keep weekend hours, but they are inevitably shortened hours and almost never at night.

A good rule of thumb when determining whether to go to an urgent care center or a hospital emergency room is to consider whether the condition that needs to be treated can wait a few hours or even a full day before receiving medical attention, or if it needs to be looked at right away. If the former is the case, it might make more financial sense to go to an urgent care center. However, if the condition must be attended to immediately, then the hospital emergency room is the way to go.

Keep in mind that every circumstance is unique, and this article is not meant to endorse a particular urgent care center in Tampa in any way. Rather, it is to present another alternative to an ER visit if the medical condition warrants it. Only you can determine whether you should seek the aid of urgent care physicians in Tampa or go to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.

A herniated disc occurs when there is a tear in the outer layer, or annulus fibrosus, of an intervertebral disc, from which the inner substance of the disc, called the nucleus pulposus, seeps out. Many people experience herniated discs throughout their lives, but not everyone suffers from the chronic pain often associated with the condition. Depending on the size and location of the tear in the disc, as well as whether or not the nucleus pulposus leaks into the spinal column and irritates the spinal cord or nerve roots, the amount of pain one suffers from a herniated disc can vary. But, what causes a herniated disc? And how can a herniated disc only cause certain people pain? The answers to these questions are not always definite, but doctors have recognized some particular causes and risk factors that increase the likelihood of an individual suffering from a painful herniated disc.

    Risk Factors

The main risk factor for developing a herniated disc is the natural aging process. Through time, your discs deteriorate due to wear and tear from various physical activities. As the discs weaken, they become more susceptible to ruptures and tears, regardless of how healthy one's lifestyle is. However, there are other conditions and factors that can increase the rate of the unavoidable, natural deterioration of your intervertebral discs. For instance, if you suffer from a condition called degenerative disc disease, which basically describes a more severe and faster deterioration of your discs, your risk for herniated discs increases dramatically.

Other risk factors that can lead to a herniated disc include obesity, inactivity, poor posture, and substance abuse. Being overweight causes a number of serious health concerns, but in terms of spinal conditions, the extra weight an individual carries can add dangerous amounts of pressure to the spinal column, including the intervertebral discs. Also, obesity generally leads to inactivity, which is another risk factor for herniated discs. Weakened muscles in the back and neck can cause abnormal amounts of strain to be placed on the intervertebral discs. Likewise, years of poor posture and alcohol or other substance abuse can increase the rate at which discs degenerate, inevitably leading to disc problems.

    Direct Causes

While risk factors can certainly add to your chances of developing a herniated disc, there are a number of direct causes or events that can result in a herniated disc. Trauma to the neck or back is a common direct cause of a herniated disc. Whether it's a car accident, a sports related injury, or an accidental fall, any force that puts too much pressure on your spine can cause discs to tear. Even if the disc doesn't tear right away, the damage done by an accident or injury can weaken a disc, leaving it prone to tears in the near or distant future.

Another direct cause of a herniated disc is the repetition of mechanical movements that put additional pressure on the spine. Manual laborers who consistently lift heavy weight are very prone to disc problems. Also, aggressive sports like football, hockey, and rugby, or sports that involve extreme amounts of jumping and hard landing like gymnastics can directly result in herniated discs. While exercise builds up back muscles and strengthens your resistance to injury, high impact sports can lead to the direct trauma and possible immediate tear of a disc. Even low impact sports like golf and tennis can lead to disc problems due to the repetitive swinging motions and twisting of the spine.

    Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatments

Many people may have a herniated disc without ever experiencing any symptoms or pain. However, herniated discs may be extremely painful depending on the severity of the disc rupture and the location of the disc. Chronic pain near the site of the degenerated disc is the most common symptom of a herniated disc. Accompanying the pain, individuals often feel symptoms that result from irritation of nerve roots near the affected disc. Symptoms resulting from nerve root compression due to a herniated disc include:

    • Muscle weakness

    • Numbness and tingling in the extremities

    • The sensation of heat or pins-and-needles

    • Diminished reflexes or neuropathic response

    • Traveling or radiating pain

Diagnosing a herniated disc can be difficult because oftentimes, especially concerning traumatic injuries, there are other conditions that can create similar symptoms. Only a doctor can provide a proper diagnosis, so it's important to have a professional consultation before you begin regular medical treatment. Treatments for herniated discs can range from more conservative techniques like chiropractic care or physical therapy, to minimally invasive, outpatient endoscopic procedures, to more invasive approaches like open-back spinal surgery.

If you're learning about your chronic back pain, you've probably heard the terms herniated disc, bulging disc, slipped disc, spinal stenosis, and more used to describe possible causes of your pain. It's important to note that while these terms all refer to a type of damage or degeneration in the spine, they all describe separate medical conditions, and in some cases, require different treatments. Only a physician can make a proper diagnosis for the cause of your chronic pain, so make sure you consult your doctor before pursuing medical treatment for pain that has lasted over three weeks.

    Anatomy of an Intervertebral Disc

The function of an intervertebral disc is to provide a flexible cushion between vertebrae in the spinal column. In order to be strong enough to support the weight of your body, but flexible enough to bend, stretch, and twist, the intervertebral disc has two main components made of different substances. The annulus fibrosus is the tougher outer shell or wall of a disc and is composed mainly of cartilage fibers. The annulus fibrosus is the stronger portion of the disc that withstands constant pressure as you go about your daily routine, whether you're sitting, walking, running, jumping, or standing up.

Inside the annulus fibrosus is a gel-like material that is more flexible and comprised mostly of water and collagen, called the nucleus pulposus. Once pressure and weight are placed onto the disc, the nucleus pulposus distributes this pressure by shifting within the disc and providing more or less cushion wherever needed. Together, the annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus keep each spinal segment strong and flexible by reducing the amount of pressure that weighs down on a specific point.

    Herniated Discs and Nerves

If the annulus fibrosus tears, the inner substance, the nucleus pulposus, may seep into the spinal column. When this situation occurs, the condition is called a herniated disc. It's important to note that a herniated disc does not always cause pain. In fact, most people will have a herniated disc at some point in their lives without ever noticing. However, if the torn or bulging annulus fibrosus or leaking nucleus pulposus causes irritation of a nerve, the individual may experience chronic pain that's localized on the torn disc, or that resonates from the problem area to other parts of the body.

The spinal cord has pairs of nerve roots protruding from every vertebral level, roughly located above and below the intervertebral discs, that divide into branches outside of the vertebral column to carry sensation and movement throughout the body. If one of these nerve roots or the spinal cord is irritated by a herniated disc, an individual may experience a wide range of symptoms that can travel along the length of the nerve. Depending on the location of the herniated disc, the individual will feel shooting pain that extends to either the upper or lower extremities. They may also feel muscle weakness and spasms, numbness in their limbs, or they can even have difficulty walking. Once the symptoms have reached this severity, it's definitely time to consult a physician.

Causes and Risk Factors for Herniated Discs

Your risk for developing a herniated disc naturally increases throughout the course of your life. The aging process inevitably deteriorates your spinal anatomy, and part of this deterioration can be ruptures or tears of the intervertebral discs. While the aging process certainly takes its toll, herniated discs can also result from other causes and risk factors that directly affect your spine's discs.

For instance, trauma that directly impacts the intervertebral discs is a very common cause of herniated discs. Whether you play an aggressive sport or you've been involved in an accident, too much pressure being placed on your intervertebral discs can cause them to rupture or tear, which may lead to a herniated disc and chronic pain in the back or neck. Also, if you lift heavy items, sit at a desk, or operate heavy, vibrating machinery on a daily basis, these activities can also wear down a disc over time and cause it to rupture. Other risk factors for herniated discs include obesity, being inactive, having poor posture, or substance abuse of alcohol or nicotine.

    Diagnosis and Treatments

If you think you have a herniated disc, make sure to consult a doctor, as diagnosing a herniated disc isn't always easy. Once you've received your diagnosis, your physician will likely recommend a number of conservative treatments that may relieve your pain. Physical therapy, pain medicine, and lifestyle changes may be able to dramatically reduce your pain. However, if your pain remains severe, you may need to consider having a surgical procedure. There are several surgical approaches available. Some surgeries aim to remove a portion of a damaged disc so that it does not press on nerve tissue anymore, while others will remove the damaged disc altogether. While all surgeries require recovery periods, there are endoscopic, or minimally invasive, spine procedures that reduce recovery time compared to traditional open spine surgeries, and have high success rates. Only a physician or surgeon can tell you whether or not your condition requires surgery, so consult a spine specialist in order to better understand your treatment options.

Most of the pain that results from a herniated disc results from nerve irritation. First, the local nerves in a disc's wall can become irritated by the herniation (tear) in the disc and its contact with the disc's leaking inner fluid, which can cause a painful inflammatory response.

A herniated disc also can impinge the nerve roots in the spine, which branch out to carry sensory messages throughout the body. When spinal nerve roots are aggravated or constricted by a herniated or bulging disc, the pain does not just stay localized, but can extend through either the upper or lower extremities, depending on the location of the affected nerve root. Those who have experienced a herniated disc know that this type of pain can be extremely debilitating and can severely affect an individual's lifestyle. There are different levels of treatment patients can go through in order to relieve some of their herniated disc symptoms. Most individuals begin with more conservative treatments, but sometimes surgical procedures are necessary to permanently resolve back pain.

    What Causes a Herniated Disc?

In order to understand herniated disc treatments, it's important, first, to understand what a herniated disc actually is and what causes the chronic pain associated with the problem. Staying educated about the condition is an important first step in recovery. A herniated disc occurs when there is a tear in the outer shell, called the annulus fibrosus, of the intervertebral disc, allowing for the inner gel-like substance, called the nucleus pulposus, to seep into the spinal column. Chronic pain from a herniated disc may result from a number of problems like the actual tear in the disc wall itself, the seeping nucleus pulposus irritating nerve roots or the spinal cord, nerve constriction from shifting vertebrae, or even the torn outer shell of the disc pressing against a nerve root or the spinal cord.

The risk of having a herniated disc naturally increases with age. However, direct trauma to the spine caused by an auto accident or aggressive sport can also cause the intervertebral discs to rupture. Any activity that puts pressure on a disc, from an accidental fall to spending hours on end sitting at a desk, may cause an intervertebral disc to rupture or tear. Sometimes, it can be difficult to diagnose a herniated disc because, for instance, if you've been involved in an auto accident there may be other factors like strained muscles or ligaments that can be causing back and neck pain. Only a physician can correctly diagnose a herniated disc, and often medical imaging like an x-ray or an MRI is necessary to see exactly what's happening in and around the spinal column.

    Conservative, Initial Treatment Options

Before you pursue drastic measures like open back surgery to treat your herniated disc, there are a number of exercises and therapies you can try that may dramatically relieve your pain. Physical therapy, pain medications, the application of heating pads and ice packs, and injections are common ways to relieve symptoms of a herniated disc. These techniques focus on ways to temporarily loosen up back muscles, ligaments, and other spinal components that are causing discs to infringe upon a nerve root or the spinal cord. Also, alternative treatments like chiropractic care can provide temporary relief for back pain. Chiropractors adjust your spine and manually maneuver discs so that they no longer press on or constrict nerves for a short period of time.

Lifestyle changes like losing weight, getting more exercise, and practicing yoga can reduce the pressure placed on discs and nerves and may relieve some symptoms as well. The stronger back muscles become, the more able they'll be to support the spine and reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the vertebrae and discs, which may lessen the chances of nerve compression and pain.

    Surgical Treatment Options

If the more conservative treatment options do not relieve chronic pain, surgical treatment may be recommended. Traditionally, this meant open spine surgery with large incisions; however, as medical technologies expand, doctors are finding less invasive ways to perform spinal surgeries. Laser-assisted endoscopic spine surgery has become a leading minimally invasive procedure that offers high levels of accuracy and reduces the amount of recovery time the patient has to endure as compared to traditional open-back surgery. For example, an endoscopic discectomy is a procedure during which doctors make an incision of less than one inch and remove the portion of a herniated disc that is pressing on a nerve root or spinal cord.

A laminotomy, which also can be performed as an endoscopic procedure, involves removing a portion of the lamina (part of a vertebra) thereby reducing pressure in the spinal canal. Also, this procedure gives the surgeon an open window to the spinal canal from which he or she can remove any tissue, bone, cysts, or disc material that can be encroaching on or pinching the nerve roots. A foraminotomy, another endoscopic procedure done to relieve herniated disc symptoms, creates more space in a foramen. The foramina are the spaces through which nerve roots exit the spinal canal; during a foraminotomy, any fragments of bone or disc tissue that are blocking a foramina and pinching nerve tissue are removed. A laminotomy and a foraminotomy, both of which can be performed as minimally invasive procedures, have the ability to resolve symptoms of herniated discs through an incision of less than an inch long. Open-back surgery, on the other hand, requires much larger incisions and a longer recovery period, and involves a greater risk for complications.

Simply put, there are no definitive symptoms of spinal stenosis. Some people will go their entire lives living with spinal stenosis without ever knowing it. Others may suffer from the chronic pain of spinal stenosis from a fairly early age until they undergo a surgical procedure. Because so much of what an individual feels is based on the severity, type, and location of their spinal stenosis, it's very difficult to provide a perfect list of symptoms. However, there are some indications that your back pain could be something more serious than a strained muscle, and there are some signs to look for that indicate it may be time to consult your physician.

    Causes and Risk Factors

There are a number of degenerative spine conditions that can be associated with or aggravate spinal stenosis, as well as a variety of risk factors than can increase the rate at which spinal stenosis develops. The most common cause and risk factor of spinal stenosis is the natural aging process. As the spinal column ages, the discs, vertebrae, ligaments, muscles, and other tissues that compose the spine deteriorate. Some of the medical conditions that may arise in an aging spine include:

    • Osteoarthritis

    • Bone spurs

    • Bulging discs

    • Herniated discs

    • Hardened or enlarged ligaments

    • Other conditions like spinal tumors or bone diseases

All of these conditions can lead to tissue, bone matter, or disc material entering the spinal canal and placing pressure on the spinal cord or a nerve root. Some of these conditions can naturally occur over time, but others may also be the result of direct trauma to the spine. Auto accidents, trauma from aggressive sports, or the repetition of mechanical movements can put direct pressure on the spinal anatomy, causing a problematic condition like spinal stenosis to arise.

Disc and spinal anatomy degeneration can also be increased by certain risk factors. Inherited traits certainly play a part in the development of some degenerative spine conditions that may lead to spinal stenosis. Obesity and inactivity can also put more pressure on the spine and increase an individual's chances of developing problematic spinal conditions. Daily factors like smoking and poor posture can contribute to the accelerated deterioration of the intervertebral discs and other components of the spine as well.

    Symptoms

Symptoms of spinal stenosis largely depend on the location of the constriction of the spinal canal. There is usually some pain around the initial area affected by the spinal condition, but it may travel to the extremities as well. Nerve roots that extend from the spinal column branch out to carry sensory messages throughout the body. If the constriction of the spinal cord or nerve root occurs in upper, or cervical, portion of the spine, then individuals may feel pain through their shoulders and upper extremities – or in some cases, may have difficulty walking. For spinal stenosis in the lower, or lumbar, section of the spine, pain can carry through the hips and buttocks and into the legs. Some examples of these symptoms include:

    • An inability to distinguish between hot or cold

    • Sharp and ongoing pain that gets worse at night

    • Difficulty walking or a change in gait, which could be the sign of a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment

    • Pain that continues during inactivity

    • Pain that radiates the length of a compressed nerve

    • Tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness in a particular location

Just because you are experiencing some of these symptoms does not necessarily mean your condition is as serious as spinal stenosis. Injuries of the muscles or ligaments often have symptoms that resemble those of a more serious condition like spinal stenosis, so remember that only a doctor can properly diagnose whatever is causing your symptoms.

    Treatments

Once a physician has reached a spinal stenosis diagnosis, there are a number of more conservative treatments they may suggest to relieve some of the symptoms. Physical therapy, pain medicines, and steroid injections all loosen up or strengthen muscles and ligaments in the back, which may relieve some of the pressure being placed on nerve tissue in the spine. Also, lifestyle changes like losing weight, participating in low-impact exercises like swimming and walking, or cutting out smoking and drinking alcohol can improve chronic pain from spinal stenosis. If these more conservative treatments don't provide initial relief, a physician may suggest a surgical procedure.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

If you've recently been diagnosed with spinal stenosis, but aren't quite sure what that means, staying educated about your condition may relieve some stress and actually help you begin the recovery process. For starters, the word stenosis means the constriction of a duct or passage. So, spinal stenosis refers to constriction of the spinal canal or nerve roots, which may be causing chronic pain or other unpleasant symptoms. While spinal stenosis can certainly be problematic, small amounts of spinal constriction are normal as individuals age. In fact, some people are simply born with more narrow spinal canals but may never encounter any pain, while others can be debilitated by spinal stenosis-related back pain. Knowing the exact location of your spinal stenosis is the most important factor as to understanding your symptoms and your various treatment options.

Causes and Locations of Spinal Stenosis

Generally speaking, spinal stenosis occurs in either the upper seven vertebrae of the spine, referred to as cervical spinal stenosis, or the lower five vertebrae, referred to as lumbar spinal stenosis. The location and underlying degenerative spine condition that causes spinal stenosis play a huge factor in how debilitating your symptoms may be, as well as to which treatment options to pursue.

Some of the more common spine conditions or abnormalities that can aggravate or cause spinal stenosis include:

    • Bone spurs – These small growths of excess bone develop in response to a reduced joint stability and can cause spinal stenosis either by the actual formation of the spurs themselves, or by the destabilized joint's inability to keep space between vertebrae.

    • Bulging discs – If the wall of a disc has become weakened, it may intrude upon the spinal canal, causing spinal stenosis.

    • Hardened or enlarged ligaments – Through the aging process, ligaments lose their elasticity and eventually can turn into bone. If this condition occurs, the spinal canal can be intruded upon by this inflexible material, leading to spinal stenosis.

    • Herniated discs – If the weakened outer wall of a disc tears, the inner gel-like material can spill into the spinal canal, causing spinal stenosis from the ruptured disc material or causing vertebrae to shift and constrict the spinal canal.

As stated earlier, some people are simply born with narrow spinal canals that, through time, can develop into painful spinal stenosis. Other conditions that can cause spinal stenosis include spinal tumors, spinal diseases, or the various after-effects of a traumatic injury.

    Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis

The symptoms of spinal stenosis can be difficult to diagnose due to the fact that they can resemble symptoms from less serious conditions like a muscle or ligament strain. However, if the pain is consistent and symptoms become chronic, there is a chance they are the result of spinal stenosis. The most debilitating spinal stenosis symptoms occur as a result of the constriction of a nerve root or the spinal cord itself. Nerve roots in the spinal canal branch out from the spinal cord to carry sensory messages throughout the body. So, chronic pain associated with spinal stenosis is not always localized to the specific location of the constriction, but may extend to the extremities as well. Depending on the section of the spine affected, constriction of the nerve roots can cause symptoms to extend to either the upper or lower extremities. These symptoms can include:

    • Bladder or bowel dysfunction, which indicates a medical emergency and should be addressed right away

    • Difficulty holding balance or walking

    • Pain during periods of inactivity like at night or persistent pain throughout the day

    • Pain that radiates from the back to the tip of the extremity

    • Tingling, numbness, or weakness in the extremities

If these symptoms become chronic and interfere with your ability to perform day-to-day activities, it's time to consult your doctor. To gain an accurate view of your spinal problems, your doctor may order medical images like an x-ray or an MRI to find the specific location of your spinal stenosis.

    Treatments

Once your condition has been properly diagnosed by a physician and it's determined you are not facing a medical emergency requiring immediate surgery, you can begin conservative, non-invasive therapies to relieve your spinal stenosis symptoms. Physical therapy, pain medicines, and steroid injections can help the muscles and joints in the spine to loosen and may take pressure off constricted nerves. Also, lifestyle changes like losing weight and improving your posture can shift your spine's construction and relieve some of the painful symptoms. However, if these more conservative treatments don't work, your doctor may suggest an elective surgical procedure to provide relief for your spinal stenosis symptoms.

The shoes you wear determine many details about your overall health. If you wear shoes that are ill-fitting and uncomfortable, you could cause several problems with your feet, legs, back, hips and posture. Taking the time to find the best shoes for you is extremely important. Check out these tips for choosing the right discount shoes and doing so at an affordable price.

If you have a medical issue that requires you to wear special shoes, your choices can become challenging at the average shoe shop. Bear in mind you are not stuck with boring choices if your shoes need to be specially designed for an Achilles' heel issue or bunions on your feet. Several styles that have a high arch and thicker sole are attractive and provide extreme comfort. Your health care provider can recommend the best retailers to look for the shoes your health problem requires you to wear.

The activity you do while wearing a particular type of shoe is important to consider when you are shopping. If you are looking for a shoe to wear during a particular sports activity, making the right choices could be important. The athletic style you need is determined by the sport. For example, football and other sports played on dirt would require you to choose cleat styles. Performing your best at any sport depends a great deal on you wearing the correct shoes. Knowing the reason you would need a certain type of shoes is necessary for making the right choices. If you want a running shoe, you need more flexibility. The shoe you might choose for walking is generally stiffer in its construction. Always take the time to learn more about your sport before purchasing any kind of shoes or equipment.

Avoid selecting footwear because of a trend or fashion fad. Many women will choose shoes that are uncomfortable simply for the look. Wearing shoes that are too tight can cause issues with the many tiny bones in the foot. Taking the time to try on footwear you are choosing only for appearance is extremely important to your comfort and good foot health. The same is also true about the tennis shoe styles you may want for wearing stylish outfits. Some fabric tennis shoes can fit too tight as well. Never assume that because a shoe is athletic in any way that it is the best choice for healthy, comfortable feet.

The choices you make for children's shoes are important to promote the healthy growth of their feet. Making sure you try on your child's new shoes for learning how well they fit is essential. Many people choose shoes that are a half size bigger, allowing room for foot growth. However, always making sure you choose a size that fits snug but not too tight is best. Shoes that are too big can cause blistering and discomfort. Having your child fitted by a shoe professional is a good idea.

If you are shopping online for your new shoes, be sure to choose retailers that offer free shipping for returns. If the shoes you order do not feel comfortable or are the wrong size, you can return them free of charge at several retailers. In this way, you can get the most comfortable pair. Taking the time to read customer reviews about the retailers and the shoes you are considering can be helpful to your online shopping choices.

Never take time to 'break in' a pair of new shoes. The time you spend' breaking in' in new shoes could be detrimental to the health of your feet. If a shoe does not feel good the moment you slip it on and walk, you should consider another style. if one shoe hurts your foot, it can cause you to limp. Half a day at work of limping can cause serious lower back pain. Going straight home from work to soak your aching feet each day is never any fun as well. Shoes that rub blisters on your feet can cause intense pain. The bunions you have on your feet can become worse by wearing ill-fitting shoes. Avoid these and many more circumstances surrounding your feet by taking the time to learn more before you shop for your discount shoes.

It's a popular notion that the hair is a person's crowning glory. If you spot someone in a crowd that may not be considered pretty by normal standards, a great hair cut and lustrous tresses can almost always sway a judgment. Gorgeous hair is a priceless asset, and the dozens of hair salons in every city are a testament to this. Keeping your horse's mane and tail beautiful is one of the most important steps in having a gorgeous horse. The difference between a beautiful mane and tail and a scraggly, thin mane and tail can make as much difference in a horse's beauty as a person's attractiveness. The first step is to untangle the mess that often happens over winter. Start by untangling the hair and getting out all the dreadlocks. Don't rush this process, as you don't want to pull the hair out. Work your way through the matted mane and forelock first. Start at one end of the mane and work your way slowly down the horse mane untangling one section at a time. Saturate sections of the hair with any over the counter detangle. Choose a large tangle, and slowly apply the product and separate the tangles with your fingers. Start at the bottom of the tangle and work your way up to the roots. Work the product into the hair by using your fingers, and gently pull the hairs, a few strands at a time. Keep doing this until the knots and tangles get smaller and then are gone.

Repeat the same process with the tail once you have the mane and forelock untangled. You should stand to one side while detangling their tails, so you avoid being kicked by the horse. Help them maintain a calm and relaxed attitude by patting them gently, and then slowly move your hands down their necks and sides until you get to the tail. Once their hair is free from tangles, it is now safe to brush their hair by using a stiff bristle hair brush. Never use a comb, which does nothing but pull hair out. Start brushing the bottom of the hair and then work your way up to the roots. Don't use too much force, and make sure that you don't stretch the hair while brushing. Try to brush as gently and slowly as you can. Patience is the key to leaving the most amount of mane and tail possible. It takes a long time to grow, so you don't want to pull out what you have already grown by rushing this important step.

I've told you many times that in order to get massive publicity, you have to give the reporter something. When you give him something, he'll give you the fame, fortune, recognition, etc. that you want.

Now let's make that a little more powerful. Let's also refine the rule a little bit. Let's change the rule to read "When you give something exciting, you get something exciting." Here's an example to make this point clear. In 1990 I wrote a book (now an audio book) called "How to Find the Love of Your Life in 90 Days or Less." I also wrote a series of special reports to go with the book.

The content of the book and special reports is superb. They all do exactly what they claim to do – they help you find the love of your life very quickly and continue to build a very exciting, happy relationship. I've used nothing but my publicity formula to sell the book and the reports…and I've done thousands of interviews on the topic. In fact, the book and reports are still sold today, over 20 years later! Why would I get so many requests for interviews when there are hundreds of books and reports on the same topic? Well, first, look at the title of my book – "How to Find the Love of Your Life in 90 Days or Less".

That's a grabber and a great example of how important titles and headlines are. Now, take a look at a few of the titles of my special reports:

    * The Greatest Personal Ad Ever Written & How You Can Put It To Work for You

    * The Dating Nightmare: How To Overcome the Anxiety You Feel When You Meet That Special Someone

    * Why Health Clubs Are The Worst Places To Meet People…and How You Can Make Them The Best Places for You

    * How Not to Kill a Relationship on the First Date

    * Chinese Restaurants and 30 Other Improbable Places To Meet The Love of Your Life

    They are absolutely irresistible!!!

When a reporter sees those titles, then reads the descriptions of the reports, he has no choice but to call me up for more information. The titles and descriptions of those reports are so exciting, he wants to know more. He doesn't want to call the other people who've written similar works, he wants to call me…because what he sees is exciting!

I haven't spent one thin dime on advertising these products. I haven't had to. They are so exciting that I get all the publicity I want, just based on the titles and descriptions. Thanks to publicity, I've sold loads of these products. When I send samples of the reports to the reporters, they're thrilled even more because the book and each and every report follow through on the claims I make. Not only are the titles and descriptions exciting, the content is just as exciting. Not only am I giving the reporters something, I'm giving them something exciting. They reward me by giving me exciting amounts of press coverage – full color pages in newspapers and magazines; full hours on radio and TV – all to promote the sale of my products. "When you give something exciting to the media, they give you something exciting in return."

So the lessons in this message are:

1 – Give reporters something exciting and you'll jump to the top of their contact pile

2 – Put a great deal of effort into your titles and headlines for anything you have, whether it's a book, report, article, ad or whatever.

I've told you how important it is that your press release be believable. Even if your astonishing claim is absolutely true, if no one believes it, you don't get anywhere with the media. Subscriber Pierre Hill came up with a superb example to illustrate exactly what I was telling you. Here's Pierre's story in his own words:

    Hello Paul:

I read your e-zine with great interest (as always) and it reminded me of the time I wrote and distributed a news release for one of our companies (I work for a holding company).

This company is a reprographics firm that also sells and services engineering copier and plotting machines.

The news release announced that the company named the #1 dealer of Xerox Equipment Systems in the country. That meant that a 25-man sales team from unheard of York, PA beat the pants off firms from Manhattan, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, etc. Not one newspaper ran the release because no one believed us.

Two weeks later I called an editor from our local paper and asked why the news release didn't appear. She said she didn't believe it and could I prove it. I put her in contact with the regional Xerox Sales Manager who confirmed the release. The following Sunday on the front page of the Business Section was a quarter page photograph and a quarter page article on our firm being named the #1 dealer in the country. I don't know how else we could have stated it but my follow-up phone call made the difference.

    All the best,

    Pierre Allen Hill

Now don't get overly concerned about your claim being unbelievable. That's not the real point. My point is that if you have an incredible, true claim, but the reporters aren't banging down your door, they simply may not believe you. What do you do then? Offer to provide the proof, just like Pierre did.

When I wrote the title and press release headline for my book "How to Find the Love of Your Life in 90 Days or Less", I very carefully to chose the number "90". Any less and it would've been too incredible to believe – even though the truth is that it takes less than 90 days. Make it incredible, but make it believable.

Intel co-founder Gordon E. Moore was the first man to observe a trend in computer processing power that has been proven true ever since the integrated circuit was first invented in 1958. This trend, now known as Moore's Law, postulates that the processing power of computer chips roughly doubles every 18 months. What this means is that the power of computers is increasing at an exponential rate, and along with that acceleration in processing power comes an ever increasing amount of innovation and technological advances. Today, devices like smartphones and tablet PCs, technological achievements that would have been all but impossible only 20 years ago, are normal and fully integrated parts of our lives. What incredible new technologies might arise in the next decade?

Here are just a few exciting examples of technologies in development that are shaking up the modern world and might significantly affect our lives one day soon:

3D Printers – 3D printing has come a long way in recent years, and the exciting technology behind it may one day allow independent inventors to create working prototypes of complex items right from the comfort of their own homes. Beyond maximizing human creative potential, 3D printing combined with stem cell research might also significantly affect the future of medicine. Already, simple organs like tracheas and other cartilaginous structures have been successfully 3D printed and surgically inserted into patients. It's not unreasonable to predict that, thanks to the power of 3D printing, waiting lists for even complex organs like hearts and livers might someday be a thing of the past.

Driverless Vehicles – While cars still do not fly and probably will not in the near future, several tech and automotive companies have begun to investigate the viability of driverless vehicles. Already several companies have created driverless cars that can handle slalom courses and parallel parking with ease. Google has developed one such driverless car that is "driven" by an artificial intelligence that uses multiple cameras and sensors on the roof and bumpers to determine the positioning of the vehicle. While the technology to make these vehicles dependable for use will probably be ready within the next five years, it may take much longer than that for them to become inexpensive enough for widespread consumer use.

Unprecedented Motion Detection – Just ten years ago, touch-enabled devices were a rarity, but today there is a touch screen on virtually every cell phone and portable electronic device. This trend has continued even further, with motion detection from a distance beginning to see use via video game devices like Nintendo's Wii or Microsoft's Kinect. However, there are several new technologies that are dramatically increasing the sensitivity and usability of motion detection. A device called Leap Motion enables users to control video games, tablets, and televisions through an advanced motion sensor that detects finger movement without it ever touching a single screen. Yet another new device, Eye Tribe, allows users to control their tablets by using the movement of their eyes, allowing users to do everything from play games to access the Internet simply by looking.

Mechanical Prosthetics - Over the last ten years, DARPA, the advanced research wing for the Department of Defense, has been hard at work creating advanced prosthetics that closely mimic the movement and function of natural limbs. DARPA's current prototype attaches tiny electrodes directly to the nerves on a limb that were severed during amputation, allowing the patient not only direct mental control of the limb, but a limited amount of sensation and proprioception (the ability to sense where your limb is without looking) as well. Further, more advanced versions of the technology are still in development.

No matter which of these technologies you're most looking forward to using, keep an eye on the future. These devices of tomorrow may be here much sooner than you think.

Article Title: Choosing a Hotel When Traveling For Outpatient Surgery

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

If you are scheduled to receive outpatient surgery at a hospital or ambulatory surgery center (ASC) that is out of town, selecting the right hotel is the first step towards a healthier and faster recovery. Whether the surgery in question is elective or necessitated for pressing medical reasons, there are several criteria that you should keep in mind when choosing a hotel.

Perhaps the first thing you should consider is proximity. While outpatient surgical procedures are typically non-invasive and require shorter recovery times than traditional surgery, the closer you are to your surgical center, the better it will be. No matter how minor your surgery is, some recovery will still be necessary, and long car rides or complicated transportation arrangements may aggravate your condition. These days, you can find hotels near your surgical center by searching online, and calling your intended center to see if they have any nearby recommendations is also a good idea. Many hotels that are close to hospitals or ASCs forge working relationships with these medical centers, and as a result will likely have the accommodations you'll need to recover properly and rapidly.

Speaking of accommodations, the next important step in choosing a hotel is to consider the quality of the lodging and the features you'll need to feel comfortable. This goes beyond the number of stars next to a hotel's name. Instead, it has more to do with the services they provide that might make your recovery easier. For example, hotels that offer room service and have particularly comfortable beds are often good choices, and hotels or inns that have smoking sections, even if your room is not located there, should generally be avoided. Another important consideration is whether the hotel has handicap or wheelchair access, which is especially significant if your outpatient surgery will have you off your feet for an extended period of time. Entertainment will also be a priority if you'll have limited mobility after your surgery, so try to find a hotel that has a full cable package or offers free Wi-Fi or other types of Internet connectivity.

A third rule of thumb to follow when it comes to quality is to consider how long you plan to stay at the hotel. Generally speaking, the longer your stay, the better quality you'll want, since you'll have to deal with the living arrangements for a longer period of time. Choosing hotels that offer discounts for extended stays or that have cookware or mini-kitchens can help you make your room a comfortable temporary home while you recuperate.

Finally, when it comes to traveling for medical reasons, there are agencies and services that are expressly designed to help you find the kind of hotel you need. Agencies dedicated to medical tourism will place you at an appropriate hotel, and since their job is to ensure that their clients are happy, their word is far more trustworthy than a few reviews on a hotel's website. These travel agencies may even be able to help you find a nearby recovery center. Recovery centers are typically used for more involved surgeries, and provide many of the comforts of an upscale hotel along with dedicated medical care and services. However, if price is a consideration, you should also know that recovery centers, while providing the best care available, typically cost as much as the finest hotels.

Fortunately, regardless of the hotel you choose, by their very nature many outpatient surgeries have relatively short recovery times, so the odds are that you'll be back on your feet and on your way home in no time.

Are you considering taking a Grand Canyon airplane tour any time soon? Good decision! But there are a few things you need to know in order to get the best flight. Let's take a look.

    Departures

There are two places from which airplane tours depart. They are Las Vegas, NV, and Tusayan, AZ. From Vegas, planes go to the West Rim (a/k/a/ Grand Canyon West) and the South Rim. From Tusayan, you'll only fly the South Rim.

Many travelers are looking specifically for airplane tours when they search online. However, if you are trying to book a helicopter tour and find it sold out, I strongly recommend you consider the plane.

Why? Well, planes have 19 seats compared to 6 seats for helicopters, and this means you'll usually find availability. Further, plane flights, which fly the same routes as helicopters, are cheaper.

    Las Vegas Airplane

Las Vegas flights to the West Rim take just 30 minutes. You can choose from aerial and landing tours. Air-only trips are awesome in that you get to see all the key highlights (including Hoover Dam and Lake Mead) in the shortest time possible.

However, I prefer landing packages, especially the one that comes with a helicopter ride to the bottom of the canyon and then a boat ride down the legendary Colorado River. There's even a plane trip that includes tickets to the fabulous Grand Canyon Skywalk!

Final words about the airplane package with helicopter: this is a very special flight because helicopters are only permitted to fly to the base at the West Rim. You can't do this at the South Rim, which in my opinion makes this trip extra special.

    South Rim Airplane

The Tusayan airplane tour I like the best gets you up in the air for nearly an hour. During that time you'll see North Rim, South Rim and everything up to the eastern border of the National Park. It's quite an extraordinary journey because you'll have seen up to 75 percent of the Park in under an hour!

As you plan to take one of these flights, make sure you book it at least 72 hours in advance. These trips are quite popular and are famous for selling out if you try to book them same-day or within 24 hours. Besides, those who book ahead of time get better pricing and are able to choose from the best flight times.

Also, give yourself enough time to search the Internet for the best prices as this is where the best deals are. For my part, I focus on tour-supplier websites. My experience has shown me that this is where the lowest rates are. This is because these are the companies that own and operate the flights and have the muscle to offer the best promotions and specials. However, make absolutely sure you complete your transaction online in order to lock in the Internet discount.

    Conclusion

I hope this article about planning a Grand Canyon airplane tour proved helpful. First thing to decide is where you'll depart from: Las Vegas or Tusayan. If you are in Vegas, you'll have to choose between an air and ground tour. I prefer the later. At South Rim, take the 50-minute flight. Next, book in advance. My recommendation here is to buy your trip at lease 72 hours ahead of time. And, finally, purchase your trip online in order to cash in on some of the great offers that air-tour companies are offering.

When someone arrives at the Services page of your website, they probably already read your home page, then clicked on the Services link to know more. They may or may not have checked out your bio. Either way, odds are that they come to your Services page with a few pointed questions on their mind: Does this person offer what I'm looking for? Do they work in a way that I'd be comfortable with? And if all that is a "go," what is my next step?

Be sure to start your Services page with an inviting headline - not something dry and classifactory like "Our Services." It might allude to the benefits of your services or distinction in your approach. Here are some sample headlines for various kinds of service providers to get you on the right track:

    * Get Found Fast With Our SEO Services

    * Business Law Services That Keep Your Company Out of the Courts

    * Reach Your Relationship Goals With the Aid of a Understanding, Expert Coach

If you offer a long litany of services or several types of services, divide up the page with subheads that enable readers to quickly find what they have in mind. For example, the business law firm's Services page might have the following subheads: Company Formation, Contracts, Employment Issues and Knowing the Law.

At a minimum, your Services page should list the services you offer and indicate what's involved in contracting for them. For instance, a coach should indicate whether she works with people in person, over the phone, via Skype or in some other fashion. A consultant needs to describe the process of obtaining a project quote.

In many instances, you'll also want to make clear who you do and don't serve. For search engine optimization, do you normally work with existing websites or ones that are not yet online? If you sell gardening services, do you simply create the kind of garden the client wants or also help those who want to design their own flower gardens but just don't know enough to select the right plants and create a workable layout?

You can also upgrade your Services page by posting a little promo for each service or each cluster of services. Describe the benefits, results or aftereffects of, say, having an organic lawn or having a spring cleaning brigade come in and make all the windows in the house sparkle. If there are typical concerns, doubts or questions about what you do, either address them here or link to another page where you discuss them. Remember that although readers were interested enough to click to the Services page, they may not yet have reached the point of "Yes!"

Most service providers need to discuss a project with the client before they know what that will cost. If that's true for you, you would not post prices. On the other hand, if you have set prices, post them on the Services page.

When you've been in business for a while, sprinkling in testimonials on this page has a powerful impact. Choose client quotes that highlight a range of qualities and strengths of you or your company.

Make sure that the predominant pronoun on the Services page is "you." That's the most inviting pronoun, much more captivating and relational than "we, we, we."

As on any marketing page, end with a call to action - what you want the reader to do next. Often the goal is for them to call or email, so you can discuss the specifics of what the client needs done. In that case, don't simply say "contact us"; provide a link to your Contact page or state the phone number or email address to use right there. If you want the reader to click an order button, say so.

Use the above as a checklist and guide, and visitors to your site will know what you do and what next step they should take in becoming your client. Good luck!

More often than not, there seems to be no definite conclusion to the debate about dieting or exercising as a better weight-loss solution. Although a more reasonable school of thought suggests that a combination of both methods yields quicker, sustainable, and healthier results. However, there is another eye-opening approach which seems to have the highest and long-lasting success rate provided that it is adopted as a way of life and not as a temporary routine.

A weight conscious individual should follow a balanced diet plan, regular exercise regime, and include the following tips as habits of daily living.

    Water: Drink & Drink Away

Whether actually hungry or misinterpreting the feeling of thirst to be hunger, people should grab a glass of water before reaching out for anything to eat. It has the ability to make a person feel full yet it comprises of zero calories. Water also keeps the body hydrated and is also a requirement for the calorie-burning process.

Fruits & Vegetables: Enjoy the Natural Treats

With a variety of health benefits, each fruit and vegetable has matchless nutrition to offer. However, common advantages of including them in one's diet are:

    Rich source of fiber

More satisfactory than bigger servings of unhealthy food

Easy to digest at a good metabolic rate

Between-Meal Snacks: Be the Picky Eater

The most harmful snacks are often consumed during the time between different meals. In order to maintain a good rate of metabolism, starvation during these times is a bad idea. However, weight loss is only possible when the choice of snacks is healthy and wholesome. The best way to select snacks is to go through the nutritional information on their packs and be sure to make a wise decision.

    Meal Times: Divide & Conquer

The traditional notions of fewer but larger meals have caused damage to many people of this generation. A better alternative for individuals, who are aiming at weight-loss goals, is to split each meal into smaller portions and eat it at shorter intervals. This is how the body receives smaller packs of calories which are easier to burn as compared to accumulating unruly calories at a time.

    Spices: Put in the Flavor

Spices are an uncanny solution for weight loss. When the food is cooked with lots of spices, the taste buds feel more satisfied than with bland cuisine. When a meal feels more satisfying, people experience the natural response of their psyche which makes them eat less and still feel like they enjoyed it thoroughly.

    Green Tea: Sip On!

As compared to other counterparts which have high amounts of caffeine, green tea is a healthy alternative with weight-loss benefits. Essentially, it has the ability to help people burn fat quickly. It also enhances the rate of metabolism which is important for weight-loss.

When the outcomes of dieting and working out become apparent, people feel excited and content with the way they look. Just by throwing in a few of these healthy habits, people would also be able to feel great from within.

Article Title: Why Are we Creating a Non-Working Poor Class Instead of Traineeship Level Wages to Save Industries?

Why are we creating a non-working poor class when we desperately need to lower wage costs in Australia and create more jobs in order to save industries such as manufacturing?

Let's consider genuine solutions to save our manufacturing industries and boost our rural and mining sectors.

It is time to address the big elephant in the room- Australia's high labour costs, non-competitiveness on an international scale and impractical union demands such as continuously increased wages without increased inefficiencies (which are ensuring that industries struggle and the manufacturing industry dies).

We are a becoming a welfare state that funds a non-working class poor whereby many people are paid NOT to work. Plus our current Government creates unnecessary Public Service Sector jobs to fudge its poor employment record and buy votes.

According to the Institute of Public Affairs, a massive 409,000 public sector jobs since 2008 have been created at an increase of 60% versus only 279,000 private sector jobs at an increase of only 20% as reported in the Australian Financial Review on April 19 2013.

As a result, there are approximately 270,000 extra workers than required ( if efficient Governments were run )costing the country $27 billion pa (effectively paid not to work as their jobs are not required with many using typical bureaucracy to go slow, achieve little and be mediocre. These tactics are wasting precious taxpayer monies and providing little in the way of actual public service).

This government has also allowed tens of thousands of illegal immigrants to jump the queue. Illegal boat people arrive in Australia and are fed, accommodated and added to our welfare system at $220 Australian dollars per week on the condition that they DON'T work.

This breeds a non-working class poor and encourages thousands of more clients for people smugglers, creating a booming business for them. The people smugglers charge between $10,000 to $50,000 for a life risking boat ride to Christmas Island, en-route to a great life in Australia, where the illegal immigrants can earn more than a year's salary per month than they would in the country they came from, but only if they "don't work".

Why are we creating a non-working class poor in Australia plus public sector jobs that aren't needed when we should be creating a working class starting on below award wages like a traineeship with a step ladder to a future of higher award wages and a more abundant future for them?

We need to lower our high wages (by averaging the cost down to avoid lowering existing Australian workers' wages down) and increase our efficiencies. However, our current government has been controlled by some large, greedy, self-interested and often corrupt unions that deliberately prevent this.

The survival of many industries requires us to accept and introduce lower cost Labor and there are people who are more than happy to work for lower than the award wages for a shorter period of time . The existing illegal boat arrivals (until they are stopped) and future legal arrivals can provide lower cost Labor and would be grateful for a job and a future that isn't welfare dependant.

Although I support a policy of low cost Labor, I do not support one that would affect Australians' current jobs and current award wages as this would not be popular or even necessary if we consider a low cost Labor solution from new immigrants. However, this solution can help industries keep current Australians employed by allowing a lower award wage for new immigrants. Consider it like an apprenticeship or traineeship whereby new immigrants start on a much lower award wage and over a 3-5 year period work their way up to award wages.

Many immigrants would be grateful for a job and an opportunity to get a start and let's face it, when starting our career- we all started on lower wages and worked our way up over time.

Now before unions and critics suggest that we are supporting a working class poor, let's face the facts that currently the government is creating a non-working class poor from illegal boat people plus existing Australians stuck on welfare plus wasting $27 billion a year of public middle class welfare employing 270,000 extra public workers than what is required (from whom we get little value).

We believe in innovative solutions like this that neither major party has the guts to put forward, as they are too worried playing politics than debating real policy initiatives.

With a solution like this- will it help the manufacturing industry lower its wage costs by averaging its wage cost downwards?

Will it stimulate more jobs as many industries would be able to afford more employees on a low cost wage traineeship which they can't currently afford with a high cost award wage?

Will it perhaps be the only way some industries will survive?

Naturally we have to combine these solutions with increased productivity and efficiency gains as we will never compete with Asian low cost wages. However we need the unions to be prepared to start speaking the truth about the need for workers, to become more efficient and to end the go slow working practices in many Government Departments and union controlled industries.

Unions need to show real leadership and tell Australian workers the truth which is:

If you don't stop the go slow tactics, if you don't work faster and smarter and be more productive and efficient, then you won't have a job in the future, let alone a pay rise, as your jobs will be outsourced overseas.

I challenge the unions and the Government to respond and show leadership or be the cause of massive future job losses for Australian workers which is hardly acting in the workers' interest as Labor and unions try to claim, whilst their very polices are destroying industry and future job creation for our nation.

We should not be concerned with workers going on strike

The real danger to an economy is if the entrepreneurs go on strike and if the current government is re-elected, many will do so by way of refusing to continue investing in Australia and employing Australians.
