Open Plan offices may be a convenient (and allegedly more cost-effective) method for business owners and managers to supervise a greater number of staff in the least amount of (often costly) workspace, but recently published research from a prominent Australian University has shown that this modern `trend' is in itself one of the major causes of stress in the workplace. (Due to the often noisy, cramped, too hot/cold conditions, lack of privacy, mismatched personality types, etc. - plus many more reasons too numerous to mention here.)
'Sick Building Syndrome'
And if this situation isn't scary enough, there's also the often misnamed, and much misunderstood `Sick Building Syndrome' (SBS) with sufferers experiencing, in extreme cases, physical symptoms such as:
* Headache
* Eye, nose, and throat irritation
* Dry cough
* Dry, itchy skin, rashes
* Dizziness and nausea
* Sensitivity to odours
Both conditions, either separately or together, have resulted in the unprecedented escalation in the number of `sickies' being thrown every day resulting in billions of pounds worth of lost productivity.
Can anything be done about it?
The good news is, yes! But, rather than just accepting this situation as a natural result of `progress' there is a lot that can be done to alleviate, or even eradicate, these problems.
A first step, if the latter condition is suspected, should be to report the situation to your landlord, office manager, or whoever is responsible for the building and ask them to have an inspection carried out. If they are unwilling to cooperate then you may have to get local authorities such as an environmental health agency involved. (Or, if you'd prefer, contact an outsourced expert who would handle the matter delicately on your behalf.)
After a thorough environmental health inspection has been carried out on a building to determine possible causes for the occupants' health complaints, there are many measures that can be taken to rectify the situation. A combination of some of the factors mentioned above will usually be involved and all will have to be tackled. Measures taken may include an overhaul or replacement of the ventilation system, structural repairs to prevent leaks and damp, a review of chemicals used in the building, a review of cleaning practices and professional mould removal.
The Hidden Side Effects of Open Plan Working
Here's a brief explanation about the modern trend for open-plan working and it's effect on the people who have to work in such conditions; because we humans all have different characteristics it's difficult to generalise too much but clearly if a workplace has been designed poorly where too many bodies are crammed into too small a space then problems are bound to arise. People will become more easily stressed which in turn will give rise to more workplace conflicts. There is also the delicate matter of privacy and our need to be able concentrate fully on the task in hand.
The above mentioned Australian University research - as well as a recently aired ITV documentary – was also able to clearly demonstrate that productivity dropped dramatically in poorly designed open-plan work spaces. With the following examples being cited:
Say you are sitting at your work station in a mainly open plan office and you hear a door bang at the other end of your floor, your sub-conscious brain will register it momentarily but you will be able to carry on with what you were working on uninterrupted.
However, if you hear an unanswered phone ringing on the next desk and you either wait for it stop or get up to answer it yourself your brain will need at least 15-20 minutes to recover to it's previous levels of concentration to enable you to get back to where you were in the task you were working on. Or, as is so often the case during the course of your working day, your line manager or a colleague sits down beside you and goes through the details of the next project you're to work on, then you'll need up to an hour to recover your concentration before being able to return to your original task!
Feeling tired, stressed and worn out after a long day 'sitting down'?
Is it any wonder then that a lot of open plan workers feel tired, stressed and worn out at the end of each working day wondering where the time went and also irritated that they were unable to finish that important project within the allotted time. The important thing is to take action to have a suspected 'sick building' investigated as soon as possible as it is likely that the problems will only get worse if not addressed.
So, if you're a business owner or manager charged with the responsibility of arranging an office fit-out or office refurbishment don't put your business - or the well being of your staff - at risk by ignoring the symptoms. Do get early expert help - the earlier the better.

Over the past 30 years we have seen our nation's population health and fitness standards deteriorate drastically. It is now predicted that by the year 2040 that 95 to 100% of all adult Americans will be considered medically overweight.
Obesity is not a genetic disorder but is 100% preventable and a result of many years of poor lifestyle choices.
In these times of the standard American diet (SAD) and massive food and drink marketing it can be very challenging for anyone to follow a healthy lifestyle all of the time. There are those who say that you live only once so you should enjoy life to the fullest while you are alive.
You should utilize a more effective and realistic approach to gradually improving your lifestyle. This is why I created the 80/20 rules of a weight loss lifestyle. What this means is that approximately 80% of your choices should be healthy and 20% of your daily choices can be whatever you desire.
By doing it this way you are not setting yourself up for failure by expecting to be perfect each and every day. There are not many individuals who can be perfect and people may discover that it is challenging to maintain a completely healthy lifestyle 100% of the time.
This means that if you feel like having an extra piece of cake, pizza with the family or an ice cream cone on a hot summer day go ahead you deserve it. If you make smart food choices and remain good 80% of the time there is no need to worry about the other 20%.
While you indulge in your favorite unhealthy food choices truly enjoy each and every bite and don't beat yourself up or feel any guilt. So now and then indulge in a cookie or have a can of soda.
Here are just a few examples of the 80/20 rules to apply to your weight loss program in order to make healthier lifestyle choices and effortlessly lose weight and keep it off for good:
* 80% of what you drink should be water (with lemon or lime) and the other 20% can be sugary beverages.
* 80% of your meals should be healthy home-cooked meals and 20% can be processed or fast food.
* 80% of your calories should be from healthy food choices and 20% of your calories can be from less nutritious options.
* 80% of your physical activity should be resistance based exercises such as lifting weights and calisthenics like crunches, push-ups or pull-ups.
20% of your physical activity should be aerobic base exercises such as riding a bike, walking, swimming or participating in cardio kickboxing or Zumba class at your local gym.
This will mentally make it easier to transform to a healthier lifestyle without feeling like you have to change everything you do. The same rule of thumb can be applied to other aspects of your weight loss goals.
Make sure that 80% of your daily words, thoughts and phrases are of the positive, high energy manner and 20% or less ideally would be of low energy or negative words, thoughts, or phrases.
Celebrate the new and improved you and see for yourself how you can burn more daily fat, slim down your waistline and transform your body and life for the better.
Remember that you only human and no one is perfect if you slip and fall one day don't beat yourself up and pick yourself up from the bootstraps dust yourself off and make a commitment to yourself to never have to bad days in a row.
If you can do this your weight loss success will be greatly enhanced and you will be wearing the body of your dreams sooner than later.
All content is created to inspire and empower individuals of all ages interested in losing weight and keep it off for good, managing chronic disease, increase in energy, transforming their body, improving their rest and sleep and many other health benefits all without the need for dangerous drugs or risky surgeries.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
It is no secret that Americans are currently in the midst of an obesity and chronic disease epidemic. Experts have estimated that over 75% of American adult population is considered overweight and also have been diagnosed with one or two chronic diseases.
The really sad part of the story is that our poor lifestyle choices and habits have been passed down to the younger generations. It is now estimated that one out of every three or 35% of American children ages 2 to 18 are considered medically overweight.
These numbers go up significantly in African-American and Hispanic American communities where 40 to 50% of the children are considered medically.
If this trend is not stopped immediately experts predict that by the year 2040, 95 to 100% of all adult Americans will be considered medically overweight. Because of this fact I have conducted my own research and discovered that there are five major reasons for the current national and worldwide childhood obesity epidemic:
1.Intake of fast food - The major cause for child obesity is the consumption of junk food or fast foods. Children are very fond of having burgers, pizzas, noodles and many more fast foods, which in turn increases their body weight and fat percentage.
It is estimated that 55 to 6% of all meals Americans consume throughout the week are from convenient stores or fast food restaurants.
In order to combat obesity and obesity related diseases effectively in your home it will be extremely important to increase your amount of home-cooked meals and decrease the number of times you and your family eat outside of the home.
2. Family behavior - Most children whose parents are overweight are found to be at a higher risk of becoming overweight as well. The main reason may be due to conditioned behaviors, environmental factors and unhealthy eating and lifestyle habits that make them more predisposed to becoming obese.
It has been well documented that children are highly influenced by the way their parents cook, eat, physical activities etc.
3. Lack of Physical activities - Most children nowadays usually sit and watch movies, play games on their computers or text friends or Facebook them all day on their phones instead of going out and playing with friends or participating in sports activities.
Younger aged children seem to prefer playing outdoor games instead of sitting and watching movies or playing games on computers. Make it a priority to get your preteens and teens outside and more active. Remember to always support any child who is interested in participating in physical activities of any kind.
By doing so you are empowering your child with the life skills necessary in order to reduce the risk of becoming overweight in the future and becoming a victim to one of the many common chronic diseases that are currently devastate our nation.
4. Unnecessary snacking - Excessive snacking is one of the major causes that lead to the problem of obesity these days. There are many vending machines available in the schools that dispense snacks like chip, soft drinks and candy bars candy bars. All of these food choices are full of high contents of sugar, fat and cholesterol.
Make it easier for you children by fixing them a homemade meal once or twice every week to take to school for lunch.
5. Sweet Dreams or Nightmares? - The overconsumption of sweet and sugar laden foods and drinks have been indoctrinated in our American society. Children are bombarded with colorful, fun commercials featuring their favorite characters selling them a wide assortment of fat and obesity promoting foods filled with large sugar content.
Like what you ask? Ever hear of such things as sugary cereals, sodas, candy, candy bars, ice cream and many more things.
The recommended daily consumption of sugar for adults is 9 tablespoons for men and 6 tablespoons for women. Most American adults consume estimated 20 added tablespoons a day which doesn't include sugar content already in food choices.
Sadly it has been reported that the average pre-teen and teenager may consume as much 30 to 35 added tablespoons of sugar each and every day.
So in order to protect your child from suffering from premature obesity and associated common health disorders such and diabetes and high blood pressure it would be best to teach your child about the dangers of these foods and provide them with healthier sweet alternatives such as fruits, 100% fruit juice and frozen yogurt.
One should encourage and empower their children to eat smarter and become more physically active in order to lose weight and keep it off. This will not only help them to attain a healthy mind and fit body but also increase their self-worth and improve their self-esteem.
