Margret Chiponda, former Director of Women in the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has announced that she is composing political songs to promote President Joyce Banda's campaign for tripartite elections 2014.

Chiponda is the maker of many hit songs, Sendelani and Tiyende, which lit up late President Bingu wa Mutharika's campaign for 2009 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The songs enjoyed massive airplay especially on the state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) radio and in some drinking joints.

Chiponda defected to People's Party (PP) when it took power soon after Mutharika died in office and his DPP got out of power.

"I am the same Mayi Chiponda who composed Sendelani and Tiyende songs for DPP. I am old but not finished. I am working on some songs to step up your [President Banda] campaign for 2014 elections," she said Monday at a rally at Njonja in Dedza where President Banda donated 20 cows to selected poor families.

Chiponda said she defected to PP after noting that President Joyce Banda is a great woman.

"I am a veteran in politics as I started it during the time of Kamuzu Banda. I am therefore no fool to defect to your party. I noted the greatness in you which has been confirmed by an accolade you have just received as the most powerful woman in Africa," she said.

While claiming that Njonja is her home, Chiponda said the area has been neglected since the first president, Kamuzu Banda died.

"This is the poorest area in Dedza as you have seen for yourself. Since the death of Kamuzu Banda no president has ever visited this area. Thank you for helping people here with the cows," she said.

Joyce Hilda Banda nA(C)e Mtila (born 12 April 1950) is a Malawia Malawian politician who has been the President of Malawi since 7 April 2012. She is the founder and leader of the People's Party, created in 2011.

An educator and grassroots women's rights activist, she was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2009 and Vice-President of Malawi from May 2009 to April 2012.

Banda took office as President following the sudden death of President Bingu wa Mutharika. She is Malawi's fourth president and its first female president. Prior to becoming president, she served as the country's first female vice president.

She was also a Member of Parliament and Minister for Gender, Children's Affairs and Community Services. Prior to an active career in politics she was the founder of the Joyce Banda Foundation, founder of the National Association of Business Women (NABW), Young Women Leaders Network and the Hunger Project.

Forbes named President Banda as the 71st most powerful woman in the world and the most powerful woman in Africa.

Joyce Hilda Ntila was born on 12 April 1950 in Malemia, a village in the Zomba District of Nyasaland (now Malawi). Her father was an accomplished and popular police brass band musician. She began her career as a secretary and became a well-known figure during the rule of dictator Kamuzu Banda (no relation).

She has a Cambridge School Certificate, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education from Columbus University a Bachelor of Social Studies in Gender Studies from the Atlantic International University, USA and a Diploma in Management of NGOs from the International Labour Organization (ILO) Centre in Turch, Italy. Currently, she is reading for a Master of Arts Degree in Leadership at Royal Roads University in Canada. She married Roy Kachale with whom she had three children. By age 25, she was living in Nairobi, Kenya.
