There are just as many ways to buy tires, as there are reasons to invest in a new set. Buying new tires does not have to be a financial burden; there are many tricks to finding great deals on tires, as well as knowing when to shop for the best prices, especially if it is possible to plan ahead. Many consumers wait too long to buy tires, which can actually be counter-productive. Often, you may only need one or two new tires, but always make sure to buy the same tires as are already on the vehicle, so that they will be compatible with the remaining tires. However, it is worth noting that there may be rebates, manufacturer discounts, and other benefits to buying four new tires at once, and many mechanics will recommend replacing all four tires at once for the best price and performance.

For the best possible deals and sales, try to purchase tires in Spring and Fall. Tires tend to go on sale before the extremes in weather- so a little planning ahead can go a long way. Most people tend to wait until the weather heats up or the first snow of the season to change their tires, or purchase ones, so shopping earlier in the season is a great way to find the lowest prices on all-season, or winter tires. Keep in mind: there are many different types of tires to help with many weather and road conditions. Depending on your area and your traditional local weather, it may be wise to invest in tires for the summer that not only can withstand heat, but also rain, or extreme road conditions like dirt or mountain roads, or road construction.

It's also a wise decision to never wait until it is too late to buy new tires. With proper maintenance, rotations, and wheel balancing, most tires should last 5-6 years. Depending on the quality of the tire, most tires are rated at an average of 40,000-50,000 miles. However, lower quality tires may only last approximately 20,000 miles versus high quality that can last up to 80,000 miles. It may be less expensive to purchase the lower quality tires, but these will typically be replaced much more often than the higher end counterparts; the investment in higher quality tires will payoff in the long run.

Keep a vigilant eye on your tires and watch for signs of abnormal or uneven wear, as these will severely shorten the lifespan of the tires. Do not wait until the tread is worn down and the tires are 'bald' before replacement. Driving on tires with too little tread can be very dangerous, as traction, grip, and handling are severely affected by the loss of tread, as well as making the tires more prone to flats or blowouts.

Another great tip is to simply check with your preferred auto care provider or mechanic. Periodically, manufacturers will provide special deals or rebates on some of their best tires, making them affordable and accessible, and a smart investment. Shop around to find the best deals. Now in the internet age many tire dealers have vast online inventories, so finding the right tire can be just a few clicks away, making anytime the best time to buy tires- if you know where to look. A little research will help determine the best tires for your needs, so depending if you are purchasing two, or four new tires, just swapping out your seasonal tires, or need a replacement, good quality tires can be a smart, cost-effective investment.

With so many basement remodeling products to choose from, selecting the right one can be overwhelming. You not only have to consider how the product will affect the appearance of your basement, but you also have to read reviews to make sure you're making a sound investment (not to mention countless other tasks). But, selecting a basement finishing product doesn't have to be so difficult. Below are some of the things you can take into consideration to make selecting your ideal basement finishing product easier than you might have imagined.

    Temperature Control

Anyone who has ever spent time in a basement during the winter knows just how low the temperature can drop in these cavernous rooms. Depending on where you live, you may think your finished basement will be inhospitable a few months of out the year because it will simply be too cold. But that's not the case! Many basement remodeling products have built-in thermal insulation that can help basements stay warm and toasty during the winter. So, you won't have to worry about whether your basement will be uninhabitable when the outside temperature plummets. As an added benefit, thermal insulation can lead to lower monthly energy bills. Your HVAC unit won't need to run as often because the insulation will help your basement retain conditioned air. In turn, your family could shrink its carbon footprint and you could see cost savings on your energy bills.

    Accessibility for Home Repairs

Many of the home's most crucial components can be accessed from the basement. Unfortunately, finished basement walls can inhibit a homeowner's ability to access these components, which include the foundation, piping, and wiring. When repairs need to be made, homeowners are often required to undo all their hard work and tear out one or more of their basement walls. If you're concerned with limiting access to your home's important components, then you might want to choose a basement remodeling product that has removable walls. That way, you can simply remove a wall and then just as easily slide it back into place once the necessary repairs have been made.

    Protection Against Mold & Mildew

It's no secret that basements are dark, damp spaces. It's also no secret that many basements are infested with mold and mildew. Did you know that these icky fungi can do more damage than simply give an area a foul odor and cause splotchy stains? Mold can actually cause a number of health problems, including chronic sinusitis, migraines, pneumonia, erectile dysfunction, and even cancer. You can protect your family against mold and mildew – and their harmful effects – by investing in a basement remodeling product that resists the growth of these fungi. (It should be noted that these products can't mitigate an existing mold problem; they can only prevent a new one from developing.)

You may have read articles about remodeling a basement to create a home office, spare bedroom, gym, or game room. While these are all perfectly good uses for a finished basement, and they're all sure to please the human members of your household, what about your furry friends? If you have a cat, then she's probably the queen of the castle (or at least she thinks so!). Why not give your little lady a room of her own?

    Choose a Basement Remodeling Method

When you remodel your basement, you're faced with many options. The first choice you'll need to make is the type of finishing method you'll use. Some homeowners opt for traditional drywall, while others take a more modern approach with a basement remodeling system. Drywall can have many drawbacks, chief among them its susceptibility to mold and mildew infestation. You don't want to expose kitty to these icky fungi, do you? If you're concerned for your cat's health, then it may be best to choose a mold- and mildew-resistant basement finishing system.

Many systems offer more than just protection against mold. If your cat hasn't been declawed, then you'll want to choose a system with walls that are specifically designed to stand up to wear and tear. This type of system will also prove beneficial if your cat is a Parkour enthusiast (and what cat isn't?). For whatever reason, some kitties find it necessary to mark on their humans' possessions. So, you'll want to choose a system with walls that are easy to clean and that are made from breathable materials that won't retain the stench of urine (gross!).

It may also be wise to choose a system that has easily removable walls. If your foundation, plumbing, or wiring ever need repair, your kitty will probably become extremely upset if she's kicked out of her personal palace for days on end. If you have a system with removable walls, then you won't need to worry about tearing out drywall and then patching, sanding, and painting after the repairs have been made. You can simply slide the wall back into place, and kitty can resume her spot on her basement throne.

    Other Things to Consider

Once you've settled on a basement remodeling system, you'll need to decide how you'll outfit kitty's space. If she takes great joy in shredding your furniture, then why not get her a sofa of her very own from the local thrift store? You can also create a deluxe jungle gym out of pre-made "cat condos" or you can save a few bucks by constructing them yourself. Don't forget to designate a spot for the litter box and for storing extra box liners, litter, and other accoutrements.

Also, be sure to install a doggy (err… kitty) door so your little princess can come and go at her leisure. She'll probably spend plenty of time napping the day away in her special place, but she'll also want some quality family time, too. Please don't trap your cat in the basement! Let her enter and exit the space on her own whim.

If you're remodeling your basement, then you probably have a number of questions. Answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about basement finishing projects are below. Hopefully this article provides the answers you need.

Q: How long do most basement remodeling projects take to complete?

A: It can vary based on many factors. First, you need to consider the size of your basement. If you live in a very large home with a spacious basement, then it will obviously take longer to finish the space than if you lived in an 800-square-foot home. Plus, you'll need to consider the basement finishing method that you use. Drywall and other traditional construction materials can require more time to install than pre-made finishing systems. Bottom line: Ask your contractor. He or she should be able to give you an accurate timetable.

Q: Is there anything I can do to protect my basement against mold and mildew?

A: Once upon a time, the answer to this question was "maybe not." Now, many of the basement finishing systems offer protection against mold and mildew growth. Unlike the walls in traditionally finished basements that have been constructed using drywall, the walls of many finishing systems are made from breathable materials that don't trap moisture, thereby making them inhospitable to mold.

Q: How can I keep my basement warm during the winter?

A: When constructing your basement walls, be sure to add ample insulation. Or, if you're not thrilled with the idea of shoving fiberglass sheets between studs, then you could choose a system that has thermal insulation already built in. Whether you're finishing your basement the traditional way, or you're set on using a system, you should be able to properly insulate the space.

Q: How much do basement remodeling projects cost?

A: Ah, the million dollar question (pun intended). There truly is no way to estimate the cost of a basement remodel without first inspecting the space, assessing the homeowner's needs, and choosing a finishing method. In general, though, some basement remodels are less expensive (on a square foot basis) than aboveground construction. But again, this may not hold true for all basement remodels. If you want a more precise answer, you should consult your local basement finishing contractor. Most contractors provide complimentary estimates, so feel free to shop around for the best price.

Q: How do I find a Basement Remodeling Contractor?

A: Ask around! Word-of-mouth recommendations are always best, because you're speaking with someone who has firsthand experience with the company. If you rely on an ad in the newspaper, a billboard, or a flyer in the mail, then you're only seeing what the contractor's marketing folks want you to see. You can also visit the Better Business Bureau's website to make sure you're choosing a company that doesn't draw a lot of complaints. Or, you can consult Angie's List to find a pre-qualified company. When you ultimately select your contractor, make sure you're clear on the project's completion date as well as its cost. Surprises are never good when it comes to basement remodeling!

It's round two in the battle of man versus Earth. A thousand years ago, Earth cast off the last of humanity, forcing the relocation of survivors to the planet known as Nova Prime. This time around, a crash landing on post-apocalyptic Earth pits father and son Cypher and Kitai Raige against the fearsome animal species who now rule the planet. An M. Night Shyamalan movie, "After Earth" is chock full of twists, epic scenes, and delicately interwoven relationships. And how better to focus on a father-son connection than to cast Will Smith and son Jaden in the two lead roles?

Fans of the "Fresh Prince" need only see Jaden Smith once to realize that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. After starring in 2010's remake of "The Karate Kid," Jaden came into his own as a performer. He'd already performed alongside dad Will in "The Pursuit of Happyness" (2006) and costarred with Keanu Reeves in yet another remake, this time the 2008 version of "The Day the Earth Stood Still," but his 2010 lead role, opposite Jackie Chan, showed that Jaden is more than the kid of two movie stars and has enough of his own chops to capture attention and appeal to an audience.

A trend in movies this year is portraying what happens when Earth and humans divorce. Tom Cruise's "Oblivion" tackles the topic of defending the planet after an alien invasion has already fundamentally destroyed the planet as it was. "Oblivion" opened in mid-April 2013 to critical acclaim and large box office receipts. Opening in late May, "After Earth" tackles a planet similarly distressed but for far different reasons. Tom Cruise and Will Smith are arguably two of Hollywood's premier leading men. The challenge between the movies, then, is one of subtle differentiation paired with the proper amount of homage paid to rabid fans of science fiction.

In this regard, Will Smith may have an advantage. While "Oblivion" is based on previously written graphic novels, "After Earth" is based on an original premise developed, co-written and produced by the elder Smith. After connecting with screenwriter Gary Whitta, director M. Night Shyamalan also came aboard. Smith originally posed son Jaden in the movie, but didn't intend to fill the father role until Shyamalan convinced him that the film could build upon the existing Smith family dynamic and past experience working together. But before he could commit to his own movie concept, Smith had to step aside from a prior attachment to the Hurricane Katrina film, "The American Can," where he was replaced by Denzel Washington.

Since 2011, Will Smith has been active in nearly all aspects of developing the film, including scouting locations in Utah, California, Costa Rica and Pennsylvania. Shyamalan additionally performed research at the Valley Forge Military Academy, known for its setting in "Taps"(another Tom Cruise film), working to prepare the younger Smith as a military cadet of the future.

The lead-up to the release of "After Earth" was bolstered by a strong social media campaign on Facebook and Google+, along with a dynamic movie website that helps fans get inside the setting and premise of the movie. Along the way, teaser trailers have been released since early 2012, sometimes pitted directly against "Oblivion" sneak peeks. With the catchy tag line "Danger is real, fear is a choice," the early looks of "After Earth" were meant to speak to fans of sci-fi, action, military and suspense films.

Jaden, born in 2008, also follows in his father's footsteps as a rapper. Having semi-seriously sought emancipation from his parents in the past, Jaden gets a chance to grow up fast in the filming of "After Earth," where he underwent intense survival training. The Smith duo also get the opportunity to explore both sides of family relationships, undergoing both contentious and bonding opportunities in both the filming of the movie and the movie premise itself. When the pair's crash landing on Earth leaves the father injured, the son must also step up to do what's necessary to get back home, while also learning to realize the wisdom of the elder's guidance.

Back in Will Smith's world, the actor gets the chance to meld his near-epic career with the legendary past of lead character Cypher Raige. All of the relationship intricacies, fictitious storylines blended with real-life scenarios, and the Shyamalan touch of just-believable-but-still-incredible twists means that "After Earth" is sure to captivate, thrill, and catch moviegoers off guard. The film opens May 29, 2013, comes in at just 100 minutes, and is rated PG-13.

    Rating: R (sexual content, language)

    Length: 86 minutes

    Release date: May 17, 2013

    Directed by: Noah Baumbach

    Genre: Comedy/Drama

    Stars: 3.5 out of 5

Noah Baumbach's latest creation manages to be charming and witty without generating the usual backlash of cynicism so commonly suffered by upbeat indie movies. Audiences love Frances (Greta Gerwig, "Hannah Takes the Stairs") despite her flighty and irresponsible ways and embrace Baumbach's vision of the Big Apple. It's an accurate tribute to the best New York has to offer the young and impressionable.

Frances flits through the city like a small bird, leaving an imprint wherever she lands but not getting caught up in her stops along the way. She has a decidedly Californian flair and refuses to take life very seriously-or rather, she refuses to see life as it is. This lands her in one pickle after the next, though her prevailing positivity lifts her spirit up out of her troubles even when she's up to her neck in them.

People who act like Frances in real life are often a drain on their friends, because the constant troubles are exhausting for people who notice them. That's a large part of the draw of this movie. Audiences would love to be able to tap into that blissful ignorance Frances enjoys. They're envious of her ability to wish her troubles away without the world completely falling apart around her, or at least without minding too much when it happens.

Unfortunately, when her best friend, Sophie (Mickey Sumner, "The Borgias"), decides to move on, Frances is left without a safety net. She unwittingly sets off on an adventure full of mistakes and missed opportunities, bouncing from one apartment to the next and meeting a slew of new people along the way.

To those who haven't already been through the process of growing up-particularly those who've been left behind while watching their friends move into responsible lives-"Frances Ha" is a coming-of-age film of sorts. Our main character is the freest of free spirits but, like the audience, is also a slave to time. At age twenty-seven, Frances doesn't have a stable job, a relationship, or even a permanent place to live. Her life spins out of control, and as she begins to be affected by those choices more and more, she also matures and learns to deal with life and its responsibilities on her own.

For a Baumbach film, "Frances Ha" is surprisingly upbeat. This may be due to Gerwig's influence, both as cowriter and as the director's love interest. Gerwig was already a star of independent films from her first major role in Joe Swanberg's "Hannah Takes the Stairs," and she ran into Baumbach in 2010 while filming "Greenberg." The duo came together to create what many fans consider a landmark film in Baumbach and Gerwig's careers.

This is not to say that there aren't similarities between "Frances Ha" and previous projects. "Hannah Takes the Stairs," for instance, centers on a young woman living in New York after college. Gerwig's characters in each of these films face some of the same emotional challenges.

Noah Baumbach has been a prolific filmmaker since the mid-'90s and has fifteen writing credits and twelve directorial roles to his name. While they run the gamut from kids' animation films to stints working for "Saturday Night Live," the majority of his career has been spent on emerging adult issues. The time between childhood and real adulthood can be rife with conflict. With his work on "Frances Ha," however, it appears Baumbach may have begun to work his own demons out.

Audiences approve. Instead of the twisting angst present in many of his earlier works, "Frances Ha" is full of upbeat charm and is likely to leave viewers sporting smiles. The end of the movie offers up a sweet and surprising reunion between two friends who, though they will never have what they did in the past, will always have a special bond that neither time nor maturity will break.

The story of "Frances Ha" is a winner, but the film wouldn't have gone far without the right cast. Gerwig plays a seamless version of Frances, though she purportedly isn't much like her character in real life. This makes perfect sense, of course, since she helped create the character. Sumner doesn't appear often onscreen, but in the shots where she's present, she shows the audience what Frances sees in Sophie. The chemistry between the two women feels real enough to encourage viewers to search for old friends on Facebook.

A number of secondary characters pop up throughout the story and leave their marks. Rachel (Grace Gummer, "The House of the Spirits") is the quintessential perfectionist who feels responsible enough to offer her friendly acquaintance a place to stay but isn't tolerant enough to enjoy it. Adam Driver and Michael Zegen delight as twenty-something roommates bent on meeting girls and spending all their parents' money.

Overall, the story, cast, and directing style combine to create a fun and uplifting movie about the struggle to become an adult. Audiences love the hopeful feel of "Frances Ha." The response may be enough to start a trend all its own.

Liposuction, or lipoplasty, is a surgical contouring procedure used to remove fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise. While many women seek liposuction to enhance their feminine silhouettes, the procedure is becoming increasingly popular among men who want to treat areas of the body with stubborn fat accumulation.

A particular region of concern for men is the waistline, where "love handles," or rolls of excess fat, can form on the flanks, abdomen, and lower back. Liposuction to treat male love handles typically begins with several small incisions in the treatment area. A cannula, or hollow needle, is inserted and moved manually back and forth to break up fat cells before they are suctioned out of the body.

Treating Male Breasts & Other Areas

Another area that is often treated with male liposuction is the chest, particularly in patients exhibiting the growth of abnormal breast tissue, a condition known as gynecomastia. The most common causes of male breasts are believed to involve imbalances of estrogen and testosterone, such as those resulting from puberty, aging, the use of steroids or androgens to enhance athletic performance, and certain health conditions.

Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, and while tenderness, pain, and swelling can occur, the condition is largely asymptomatic and there are few physical complications. However, the appearance of breasts can lead to emotional and psychological issues for a man.

To address excess fatty breast tissue, a surgeon uses a cannula to remove fat through small incisions made around the nipple. For some men, excess glandular tissue, which is denser than fatty tissue, contributes to male breast enlargement. In these cases, glandular tissue removal via a small incision in the underarm or near the areola may be paired with liposuction for the best results.

Other areas commonly treated with male liposuction include the neck, jowls, chin, arms, upper and lower back, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. Typically, the best candidates for male liposuction are those who are of a healthy weight and have firm, elastic skin.

    Liposuction Methods

In some cases, traditional liposuction – during which a surgeon manually moves a cannula through pockets of fat – may not be the most effective method for men, as fat in males is often more fibrous than it is in women. Instead, tumescent liposuction or power-assisted liposuction may be used.

Tumescent liposuction involves the injection of a tumescent solution (a blend of saline and anesthetic) into the treatment area prior to fat removal. The solution causes the area to swell, which helps break down fat cells and makes their removal easier. The anesthetic allows for a virtually painless procedure.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) involves the injection of a tumescent solution, but also uses a cannula that emits ultrasonic vibrations to help liquefy fat before removal. This method decreases the risk of excessive tissue damage, scarring, and bleeding as compared to traditional liposuction.

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) is similar to the traditional, manual method of liposuction, but differs in that the cannula used is mechanized, which reduces the need for manual movement. As a result, PAL provides a more efficient, accurate, and less traumatic approach to fat removal than traditional liposuction.

Consult a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

Male patients considering a liposuction procedure to address regions of recalcitrant fat should first consult with an experienced plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A highly skilled surgeon who has performed a variety of liposuction procedures on many different men can thoroughly assess a patient's area of concern and recommend the liposuction procedure – or combination of procedures – that he or she believes will provide the best overall results.

Many women turn to plastic surgery to address the often dramatic effects that pregnancy, breast feeding, aging, and weight loss have had on their bodies. In general, these women want to address the following issues:

    • Sagging, deflated breasts

    • Stomach bulges

    • Stretch marks and excess abdominal skin

    • Areas of fat resistant to diet and exercise

A "mommy makeover" is a group of procedures that can surgically address these issues. The most common mommy makeover procedures typically include a combination of a breast augmentation, breast lift, abdominoplasty, and/or liposuction.

    Breast Augmentation

The breasts undergo significant changes as a woman prepares for childbirth. Breast lobules, which are formed by groups of milk-producing alveoli, increase in size and breast skin is stretched as a result. Once a woman finishes childbearing and breastfeeding, dense glandular tissue shrinks and is eventually replaced with less dense fatty tissue. This can cause breasts to lose volume and firmness.

Breast augmentation involves the placement of silicone or saline implants into the breast pocket to replace lost volume, increase size, and improve firmness. The procedure is best suited for patients with minimal sagging (or ptosis) and sufficient skin elasticity.

    Breast Lift

While breast augmentation can improve volume and size, excess skin may still be an issue, which a breast lift can address. A breast lift, or mastopexy, can utilize different incisions and techniques, but will typically involve removing excess skin, repositioning breast tissue higher on the chest wall, raising the position of the nipples, and improving breast spacing and cleavage, when necessary.

If a woman considering a mommy makeover is satisfied with her breast volume and size, but is displeased with the degree of ptosis, a mastopexy may be recommended in lieu of breast augmentation. Women who want to address both breast ptosis and volume may elect to undergo both procedures.

    Abdominoplasty

Another key component of a mommy makeover is abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck. This procedure addresses excess skin, lax abdominal muscles, and pockets of recalcitrant fat in the abdomen. Similar to a woman's breasts, the muscles and skin of the abdominal region undergo significant changes following weight loss and pregnancy. For example, during pregnancy, a growing fetus can stretch and separate the abdominal muscles, which can cause a bulge to appear in the middle of the abdomen. Additionally, as the abdomen expands during pregnancy or as a result of weight gain, the skin is stretched.

A traditional tummy tuck involves pulling taut and suturing the underlying layer of abdominal muscles through a large incision below the abdomen between the hips. Sometimes an incision around the belly button is made if naval repositioning is required. The skin is then repositioned over the muscles and the excess is removed, creating a flatter, more contoured abdomen.

A less invasive alternative to a full abdominoplasty is a mini tummy tuck, which focuses solely on the lower abdomen in the region just above the pubic bone to the navel. This procedure may be an option for patients with minimal excess skin and fat bulge.

    Liposuction

Liposuction is often part of a mommy makeover. This contouring procedure, also known as lipoplasty, removes fat deposits that have not responded to diet and exercise. Liposuction is often used to enhance the results of an abdominoplasty, as well as improve the contours of the arms, lower back, buttocks, and thighs.

    Talk to a Plastic Surgeon

A mommy makeover must be carefully tailored to an individual patient's unique needs. Before electing to undergo any procedure, a patient should obtain the surgical opinions of several experienced plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This can not only help ensure that a patient's concerns are properly addressed, but can also allow her to choose the surgeon with whom she is most comfortable and believes can help her best achieve her aesthetic goals.

Stroll into any warehouse nowadays, and you will almost certainly see a pallet rack system. The multi-tiered steel shelves that are organized in side-by-side aisles are fixtures for operations across a wide range of industries. In fact, pallet rack systems are so prominent that they are commonly found in many widely popular retail stores, including Lowe's Home Improvement, The Home Depot, and Sam's Club.

Pallet rack systems are ideal for many warehouses, distribution centers, and even some retail stores are because they are cost-effective storage solutions that offer bulk storage capabilities while keeping goods organized. No other industrial shelving option can provide the versatility and storage density of a pallet rack system, and there are several pallet rack system designs that allow companies to choose a perfect storage solution to meet their particular needs.

The History of Pallet Rack Systems

While palletization has been around since the beginning of the 20th century, it was still common in the early 1900s to store products on the floor or on top of other materials. Pallet rack systems rose to prominence around the time of World War II, when engineers determined that racks could store much more material in far less space while keeping that material organized. Since then, pallet rack systems have become fixtures in most modern warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and other storage and distribution centers. Pallet racking has continued to evolve from that time, with improvements to pallet rack designs as well as lift trucks and other material handling equipment leading the way to much more efficient storage capabilities.

Pallet Rack Systems Provide Cost-Effective Storage Solutions

While pallet rack systems are not cheap, they are among the most cost-effective solutions for bulk storage. The price of pallet racking is ultimately determined based on the storage capability of the system; the higher the density, the higher the cost. Some of the least dense pallet rack systems could cost as little as $50-70 per pallet bay, while the most dense options can cost upwards of $250-$400. One option many companies choose is purchasing a used pallet rack, which can provide significant cost savings since pre-owned racking often can be had for a fraction of the cost of new.

Pallet Rack Systems are Extremely Versatile

Perhaps one of the best things about a pallet rack system is its ability to expand with the needs of your business. Companies can add extra upright frames, cross beams, and other accessories to an existing pallet rack system to create additional storage bays. This provides the ability to increase storage capabilities relatively easily, and the ability to do so relatively quickly as well. Pallet rack components also can be removed and repositioned, providing the opportunity to reconfigure the system to accommodate a change in floor plan if necessary. This type of versatility isn't available in many industrial shelving systems, which is another reason why pallet rack systems are the chosen method of storage for most warehouse operations in the United States.

While it's always best to seek the advice of an industrial storage system expert when purchasing a new pallet rack system for your business, it never hurts to have as much knowledge as possible of the products that are available. Here is a closer look at some of the more common types of pallet rack systems that are sold today.

    Single-Deep Rack System

The single-deep pallet rack system is the most utilized today, and the least dense option available. Palletized loads are stored one deep on the system, or one pallet per bay. While density is not great, there are some advantages to a single-deep system, the most notably being unimpeded access to every load in your facility and a cheaper cost compared to other higher-density options.

    Push Back Rack System

Push back rack systems are among the highest density options available. Pallets are situated on wheeled carts or rollers that are slightly declined. Pallets are loaded from the front of the system, and when you load a new pallet it pushes the existing pallets back further into the bay. Many push back rack systems allow for up to six pallets to be loaded per bay. While these systems are ideal for bulk storage, it operates in the last-in, first-out (LIFO) method, so it may not be ideal for companies storing products that don't have an extended shelf life.

    Gravity Flow Rack System

The gravity flow rack system combines a stationary structure with a roller conveyor, with complex braking systems to control the speed of moving pallets on slightly inclined rails. Gravity flow systems can be loaded and unloaded utilizing the first-in, first-out (FIFO) or last-in, first-out (LIFO) method, depending on whether you choose to load and unload pallets from the front or rear position of the system. Most gravity flow systems are designed to handle multiple pallets per bay, making it among the higher density storage systems available. Because of its versatility with loading and unloading, the gravity flow system is ideal for storing products that can have a long shelf life.

    Drive-In Rack System

The drive-in rack system is designed to allow an industrial forklift to drive into the system to load and unload pallets. Operators typically drive into one side of the racking system and remove pallets from the same entry point; some drive-in systems have a wall or are closed at the opposite end. Drive-in rack systems offer exceptional storage capabilities, though they utilize last-in, first-out (LIFO) inventory management. These systems are ideal for companies that store products that can have an extended shelf life, or for companies that have quick turnarounds for the goods they store, which would cause palletized loads to be rotated frequently.

    Drive-Through Rack System

Drive-through pallet rack systems are very similar to drive-in systems, though there are two notable differences. First, forklifts have the ability to enter and exit from either end of the system, and second, the system operates with a first-in, first out (FIFO) method. Having the ability to enter and exit from either end of the system calls for additional aisles to be needed, which slightly reduces the storage capabilities of a drive-through system when compared to a drive-in system. However, with FIFO inventory management, forklift operators do not have to handle pallets more than once because the stock is automatically rotated and the rack system ensures that the first pallet loaded will be the first one retrieved.

In the material handling industry, safety should always be at the forefront in the mind of every business owner, particularly when it comes to the equipment that is utilized, like a pallet rack system. Pallet rack systems are the most common form of industrial shelving found in warehouses today, and having a safe pallet rack system is essential not only to ensure your goods are protected and stored properly but also for the welfare of your company's employees who work around the storage system every day. It is imperative to conduct routine inspections to ensure your pallet racking remains safe, and it's always best to have a qualified pallet rack expert conduct inspections so a thorough evaluation is performed. However, there are a few things that you can always keep an eye out for to make sure your pallet rack system remains safe.

    Look Out for Physical Damage

Inspecting your pallet rack system for physical damage is perhaps the simplest thing to do. Even an untrained eye can notice things like dents and cracks that are forming. Most of the damage that occurs to pallet racking is caused by forklifts and other material handling equipment used for loading and unloading accidentally coming into contact with the system. Some troublesome situations that arise frequently include uprights and cross beams getting bent. However, there are other physical defects that you need to be focused on identifying, notably rust and corrosion, both of which could inevitably compromise the storage system's structural integrity.

    Confirm Connections Are Secure

As with any structure that has been built, ensuring the connections are properly secured is vital. Loose connections on your pallet racking could cause the system to fail, potentially leading to valuable inventory crashing to your facility's floor. Checking to see if cross beams are securely fastened to the uprights with safety locks, if footplates are securely fastened to your facility's floor, and if clips, bolts, and safety pins are in place throughout the system are a few of the more notable connection issues you'll need to routinely check.

Make Sure Load Capacity Hasn't Been Exceeded

Exceeding the load capacity on a pallet rack system is one thing that almost certainly will lead to structural failure, and, unfortunately, overloading is among the simplest mistakes that can be made. Knowing whether or not the load capacity has been exceeded is something that, in reality, can't be done simply by glancing at the system. Nevertheless, the load capacity guidelines set forth by the pallet rack system's manufacturer should be strictly followed in order to safely store your goods and to prevent your employees from suffering injuries caused by an overloaded system. The best rule of thumb is to have the max weight for your system – including the max weights per storage bay – posted in a place that is easily visible to everyone who works around the system, and to be mindful of the weights of each palletized load being stored.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Leasing warehouse space is a common practice among businesses today, as the option eliminates many property management responsibilities while leaving business owners with a fixed, monthly bill instead of a sizable upfront cost to build a facility. If your business requires a pallet rack system and you're able to find a facility in your ideal locale that includes an industrial storage system, it would stand to reason that the situation would be a great deal, right? The short answer: Perhaps.

If the warehouse you have targeted has an existing pallet rack system, it could very well mean that you've found the perfect scenario. Then again, that pallet rack system that is in place could very well cause more trouble than it's worth. The bottom line is that there could be advantages for many businesses to lease a warehouse that has a pallet rack system in place, but in order to find out if a particular scenario would be advantageous for your business you will have to do a bit of homework beforehand to determine if it really is the best situation.

Does the Pallet Rack System Fit the Needs of Your Business?

Just because there is a pallet rack system in the warehouse you plan to lease, it doesn't mean that specific storage system will meet the needs of your business. The types of goods you need to store – and how much of those goods you need to store – will greatly impact what pallet rack system would be best. If you need to store machine parts and the system in place was designed for a company that stored perishable items, like food, then it likely won't be a great match. Two of the most important things you will need to find out about the existing system are the maximum load capacity and the inventory management process – whether it operates as a last-in, first-out (LIFO) or first-in, first-out (FIFO) system. If the result is that the existing system doesn't meet your needs, then it being in place really offers zero benefits.

Is the Pallet Rack System Structurally Sound?

A pallet rack system is no different than any other used product. Before spending your money, you will want to verify that the pallet rack system in place is structurally sound. After all, the last thing you would want to do is sign a lease and realize that you have to replace the storage system because it ends up being faulty equipment. It is always best to have a qualified pallet rack expert conduct a thorough inspection of any used pallet rack system – and to have those inspections conducted on a routine basis when the system is in use. There are certain things, however, that any person can keep an eye out for when it comes to the structural integrity of a pallet rack system, such as visible damage like dents or cracks and corrosion or rust on any system component. If any of those problems are prevalent, then you really should reconsider using that particular pallet racking system.

Is There Room for Expanding the Storage System?

If you plan on expanding your business – and what business doesn't want to expand at some point – then you need to check to see if the pallet rack system in place can be expanded in the future. If there isn't a lot of unused floor space in the facility, or no room between the top of the system that is in place and the roof of the facility, then you could inevitably be hamstrung in the long-run if your business needs additional storage space.

Pallet rack systems are arguably the most efficient, cost-effective industrial storage solutions available today, and they are prevalent in most warehouse operations and distribution centers. If you are considering adding a pallet racking to your business's facility, it's a good idea to have an understanding of the basic components that formulate the system. This article will help you gain a firm grasp of the major components inherent in virtually any pallet rack system design, as well as teaching you about components that can help improve safety for your company's employees and components that can help minimize potential damage that could occur in day-to-day operations.

Essential Parts of the Pallet Rack System

The two most essential components of a pallet rack system are the uprights and cross beams. These two components together form a bay, one of the storage areas where pallets are loaded in the rack system. Uprights are the support columns that run vertically from the ground up. They vary in size, design and style to accommodate different load requirements. Cross beams are mounted horizontally across the uprights to create the storage levels of the pallet rack system. Those two components are attached together using diagonal and horizontal braces, which are welded to form the frames.

    Pallet Rack System Safety Additions

Safety should always be at the forefront of every business owner's mind, and there are several components that can be added to a pallet racking to help make the industrial storage system safer for employees who work around the system. Some of the more notable components that can be added are wire decking, shims, and base plates.

Wire decking is a common addition to most pallet rack systems. This component is attached to the pallet rack beams to create a shelf underneath where pallets rest in the bays, and serves to catch loose objects that can fall off pallets. Safety netting is a similar component to wire decking that can be placed on the back of a pallet rack system for increased fall protection. Shims are installed to correct pallet rack systems that rest on an uneven surface. Adding a shim, which is equal to the base of an upright, will help level out the system. Shims are typically necessary because of foundation settling at the facility. Base plates are pallet racking components that are installed at the bases of upright columns. They serve as anchors for the system and provide more structural stability while also helping increase the system's overall weight-bearing capacity.

Components That Help Limit Damage to Your Pallet Rack System

Using heavy-duty material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and other similar industrial vehicles for loading and unloading goods can lead to the possibility of damage to structures in the work area. Even highly trained industrial vehicle operators can find it tough to navigate around pallet racking and other industrial shelving systems present in many of today's warehouses while transporting large unit loads. However, there are some components that can be added to a pallet rack system in order to help minimize the amount of damage that can be caused in the unfortunate incidence of an industrial vehicle coming into contact with the storage system, such as post protectors and frame floor guards.

Post protectors can be installed at varying heights on the upright frames of a pallet rack system, and are ideally installed in the highest traffic area. Post protectors can help protect against damage that can be caused from a forklift or other industrial lift truck coming into contact with the system, as well as damage caused by pallets hitting the frame. Frame floor guards can be installed for increased protection for upright columns, and they also can serve as an added safety measure for employees when steps or platforms are attached to pallet rack systems.
