Everyone hates to focus on the bad stuff, but let's face it—how can you improve if you don't know what to improve upon? So, let's get to it! What does your astrology sign unpleasantly say about you?
Aries (March 21–April 19)
Your ruling planet is Mars, the God of War. This sums up your personality quite well, don't you think. Always ready for a battle, you rams never back down. Well, that's because you are always right … at least in your mind.
Advice: Temper, temper, Aries. Loosing your cool when things don't go your way does nothing to boost your popularity. Try yoga.
Taurus (April 20–May 20)
One word describes Taurus to a tee: stubborn. Getting you to change your mind is like closing a revolving door—impossible.
Advice: I understand that you never say "die," but sometimes you may want to admit critical injury. Pick and choose your battles.
Gemini (May 21–June 20)
You are an Air sign, Gemini, and to say you are flighty would be an understatement. If life were a kitchen, you would have a hand in preparing every dinner. But, when it comes to suppertime, no meals would actually be ready.
Advice: Focus, Gemini, focus. Sigh …You're not even reading this any more, are you?
Cancer (June 21–July 22)
With mood swings off the charts, Cancers make great homebodies and told-you-sos. Oh, and lunatics—after all you are ruled by the moon.
Advice: Drop the martyrdom vibe. Get out of your shell and have a good time more often.
Leo (July 23–August 22)
If asked to name five words to describe herself, a Leo couldn't just stop at just five. You see, Leos are to modesty as goldfish are to blueberries. Meaning, Leos and modesty have nothing to do with each other.
Advice: Just because the lion is your symbol does not mean you can be King of the Jungle all of the time. Share the limelight.
Virgo (August 23–September 22)
Mr. Clean has nothing on you, Virgo. Everything in your life must be neat, tidy and completed to perfection. After all, it's all about you.
Advice: Would it kill you to compliment a friend? I know it's tough. Just make something up.
Libra (September 23–October 22)
Shopping, sleeping, looking good … vanity thy name is Libra. And don't even think about asking a Libra to make a decision. They fence-sit like it's their job.
Advice: Not all mirrors are there to reflect. Some are actually there for show. Try to walk past one without looking, Libra.
Scorpio (October 23–November 21)
I'm a bit nervous to say anything negative about you, Scorpio. You may plot horrifying revenge. So, I'll just say Scorpios are kind of scary.
Advice: Honestly, Scorpio. Your intensity is burning a whole through my soul. No, that's not a good thing.
Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)
Open mouth, insert foot … again and again and again … Take a Sagittarius to a formal event and she'll embarrass you every time. But, take one to a kegger, and she'll be the first with the lampshade.
Advice: I know, leaping without looking is exciting, but try not to be so impulsive, Sagittarius.
Capricorn (December–22 January 19)
Contrary to Capricorn belief, there is more to life than money. And, although Capricorns may find this hard to accept, too, weekends are for leaving the house, not staying home to count one's money.
Advice: Pessimism doesn't look good on anybody. Lighten up, Capricorn.
Aquarius (January 20–February 18)
The mad scientists of astrology, most people see Aquarians as just plain weirdoes. And Aquarians like that.
Advice: Always the loner, try to branch out and sail in new seas.
Pisces (February 19–March 20)
Just like their watery cousins (mermaids and the Lock Ness Monster) Pisces people live in a fairytale world; in a state of confusion.
Advice: It's time to wake up! Living in a dream world may be fun, but it could cause nightmares in reality.

Checking out horoscopes, in the modern times, has become a regular activity like reading the newspaper or checking the mails. The day to day horoscope for the zodiac signs are available in the dailies, online publications or television. Surveys have found that this section of a publication has a wide reach. The complexities of modern life have generated circumstances whereby every coming moment in our lives is unpredictable. The result is the requirement of astrological predictions. Such is the popularity of this school of astrological reading that many celebrities plan their daily engagements after consulting their day to day predictions.
The origin of horoscope dates back 3,000 years in Babylonia (Iraq presently). Such studies are based on different charts and diagrams that depicted the sun, moon, and positions of the planets according to the day, time and place of birth. The Greeks developed this science of presentiment. They named the celestial objects after their gods. Practice of astrology was completely proscribed during the Middle Ages. It surfaced again during the Renaissance. And now, well, they occupy a conspicuous section in most of the newspapers across the world. The predictions are based on the interpretations that an astrologer makes, which is done through a system of sun sign astrology.
It is a great guide as it tells us how our day, week, month or year is going to be like, therefore helps us to be on the right track. The genuineness of predictions through the horoscope has always been surrounded by controversy. It has always been criticized for not having a scientific ground. However, math is important to make calculations for making predictions; it is closely connected with astronomy and philosophy.
Horoscopes are easy to avail these days as they are available almost everywhere. All publication from magazines, newspapers to online journals feature various types of horoscopes like weekly horoscopes, yearly horoscopes, daily love horoscopes, and tarot reading. Television and radio conduct special programs on astrological predictions. Incase you are seeking a personal horoscope you can consult an astrologer or a psychic. There are hotlines that you can call up 24/7 to get a reading. There are TV shows which invite calls from the audience to get their predictions.
Horoscopes can also be availed online. There are websites that offer free predictions. All you have to do is enter your date, time and place of birth in the fields that they have in the website and submit them. The reading will be generated soon. But make sure that the site you are consulting is a credible one. The curiosity of people to know their future has mushroomed fake websites that give erroneous readings. The good astrological sites need not always be a paid one.
A good horoscope can make a comprehensive prediction that relates to our communications, love relationships, career, happiness, etc. It can foretell about our social standing and reputation. It can also talk about our strengths and weaknesses and therefore help us overcome them to live a life that measure up to our full potential.

Who is a psychic? Well, he is person who has the extraordinary ability to sense information that is latent to normal senses. Such powers enable one everything from making presentiment about a person's future to speaking to the dead. They can also have the ability of the mind to influence the world physically. They make interesting characters in works of fiction like The Dead Zone by Stephen King. It is a big industry which draws a good deal of moneyed clients. Only you need to open the TV to gauge their popularity.
Etymologically, psychic is derived from the Greek word "psychikos". The emergence of this class with rare abilities can be dated back to the existence of seers and prophets in the ancient times. These people predicted a person's future through some sort of direct vision of the future.
There is no end to the curiosity to know one's future. This has generated a teeming class of seers. It seems every other person is gifted with such rare abilities. But it is true. We all have such abilities to some extent. This raises the question why can't we all have a vision into our future or speak to our loved ones who are no more alive. Well, these abilities are latent and require lots of work and practice to tap them. Moreover, we all have extrasensory experience sometimes. But there is a difference between us and a practitioner. We write off what we sense as a coincidence. But a professional psychic trust what he senses.
Psychic abilities are of varied types. The major ones are clairvoyance (perception of futuristic visions), clairaudience (perception of voices), clairsentience (perception of feelings) and intuition (perception of a gut feeling). There are different ways to foster one's psychic powers. The first and foremost step to rewire your brain for such a rare ability is to have an unflinching faith in it. Mediation is the prime method to develop such skills. It enables you to remove the surfeit noises that clutter your mind and concentrate on the underlying energy. Yoga is the most common form of mediation. Beside this there are other tools to foster these abilities. Psychics with visionary abilities use images. Those with sensory skills observe others through his five senses. You also have to be aware about your surroundings to be an expert in the field. You should devote a little time to sense smells, sounds, shapes and textures by closing your eyes everyday to boost such awareness.
The genuineness of psychic prediction powers have never been beyond the borders of controversy. School of sciences has associated it with fraud or self-delusion. According to a report by The US National Academy of Sciences there is no scientific base to the existence of parapsychological phenomena. However, there are many things that science has yet to understand. Psychic is one of them. The human evolution is a continuing process and there are possibilities that science will invent rational grounds of such rare abilities of human brain in future.

Many of us have heard of brainwave entrainment and we are also familiar with anxiety. You may be wondering how the two are related. According to clinical studies, brainwave entrainment seems to help reduce the symptoms of anxiety. It is also known to relieve the symptoms of depression and stress, which are both closely connected with anxiety. This finding could bring hope in the lives of many Americans who are troubled by an anxiety disorder.
Statistics of anxiety disorder in America
According to the records of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the approximate number of adult Americans who are suffering from an anxiety disorder is 40 million. This is about 18.1% of the people in this age group. When we say anxiety disorder, it includes problems like panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder.
With these alarming numbers, it is a relief that these new studies have found the relation between brainwave entrainment and anxiety disorders. If you have an anxiety disorder, there are high chances that you will also develop another one. It is important that you look for safe and effective treatment options like brainwave entrainment to help with your anxiety.
Scientific proof of connection between Brainwave entrainment and anxiety
Many studies have been conducted to observe the effects of brainwave entrainment on anxiety symptoms. In a study published back in 1993 by the International Journal of Psychosomatics, it was found that audio-visual entrainment or AVE (a subset of brainwave entrainment) has been used to relieve patient anxiety and jaw pain during dental treatment procedures. This is following the 1992 publication of the Medical Hypnoanalysis Journal, which showed that people who have undergone an AVE treatment program showed a decline in the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The Journal of Neurotherapy published a study in 2009, which conducted a test on women with seasonal affective disorder. Audio-visual entrainment devices were used in this study. After the test, the anxiety and depression symptoms of participants went down significantly. These participants also experienced an improved social life as well as increased happiness. They were more energetic, sociable, and fit, with a healthy amount of weight loss.
How anxiety works
Suffering from anxiety is a terrible and frustrating situation. We know that there are many problems in life that cannot go away. We also know that unless we are fine with taking a prescription medication, the anxiety will keep haunting us. Even if we are willing to medicate ourselves for our problem, there are chances that it would fail. Sometimes, we may even start to fear the anxiety even more than we fear the root of the anxiety. This is when the disorder controls your life; but it doesn't mean you have to give up.
There is a natural mechanism in your mind that has the ability to defeat anxiety. This means that you already have the necessary tools for living a stress-free life. It's important to remind yourself that the anxiety you are suffering from is created by your mind itself. Similarly, your mind has the power to remove that anxiety and replace it with calmer thoughts.
We were born with only two innate fears – the fear of loud noises and the fear of falling. If you have any other fear or anxiety besides this, it has been developed and learned as you grew up. In simple terms, if it is possible for you to learn something, it is also possible to unlearn it. But it is not that easy to simply unlearn something that has been strongly implemented in your mind. That's where brainwave entrainment comes in handy.
Understanding the relation between brainwave entrainment and anxiety
As you might already know, anxiety can be relieved substantially by reaching the healing state in your mind. Brainwave entrainment helps you reach this state more easily. When you reach the healing state, there are many important things happening in your brain. With these activities, your brain can become more balanced. Your brain can process lopsidedly if its right hemisphere is processing too much information. The healing state in your mind can help you shift some of the extra processing to the left hemisphere, which is less emotional and much calmer.
When this happens, your thinking becomes calmer and more logical. This process also suppresses activity in the area of the brain that is responsible for stress reactions. This area is known as the amygdale. Your stress reactions can make your heart beat faster, your breathing quicker, and your palms sweaty. When the activity within the amygdale is suppressed, it increases your stress threshold. This means you don't react as severely or as frequently as you used to.
This entire process leads to an increased production of beta endorphins and serotonin in your brain. As these hormones can help you feel happier, you remain more positive and more energetic.
How brainwave entrainment works against anxiety
The frequencies produced in brainwave entrainment makes it easier for you to reach a deep state of mental relaxation. Listening to these audios on a regular basis will help decrease your heart rate along with your overall level of stress. Doing this can also help you build and improve the neural paths in your brain. This makes it easier for your mind to return to the healing state. In simple terms, brainwave entrainment can wire your brain to easily return to relaxation states, so that you can use it in your day-to-day life.
For instance, there are some people whose brains do not produce alpha waves on a regular basis. Alpha waves are brain waves that resonate just below beta, which is where your brain normally is when performing normal day-to-day activities. These people are often anxious and stressed out because the lack of alpha waves prevents their minds and bodies from relaxing. Listening to alpha brainwave entrainment tracks can help these people in training their brain to start producing more alpha waves.
As there is a strong scientific proof of the relation between brainwave entrainment and anxiety, experts are coming up with new ways to implement this technology for anxiety treatment. Relax Me Online offers brainwave entrainment tracks for people with anxiety disorders.

"One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain."
– Bob Marley
Ancient Greeks were of the belief that music had the power to heal the body as well as the soul. The power of meditation was also discovered millennia ago when the early man stared into the flames of fire and entered into a peaceful state of mind. Meditative or relaxation music is a combination of two such powers as mighty enough to deliver individuals from their mental as well as physical problems. Although discoveries were made ages ago, it was only in the 1940s that medical experts and scientists started to research the influence of music on the human body and its assistance to overcome various ailments.
Music has been used as a therapy tool by doctors for several years. Relaxation music allegedly distracts patients from their pain and helps them calm down in troubled times. However, scientific evidence from the Research Center at the Utah University has confirmed that music can help divert patients' minds to lessen their pain. A musician and university professor, David H. Bradshaw, noted an affirmative connection between relieving pain from headaches and practicing music through personal experiences.
Study Proving the Influence of Music on Pain
Intrigued by his curiosity, he joined forces with four other university doctors – from the University of Utah's anesthesiology department and used more than 150 healthy volunteers to confirm his theory. The subjects were divided into two groups and each group received shocks or painful stimulations of varying intensities from electrodes on the tip of their fingers. One group went through the mild pain in an environment where music was being played in the background while the second group was delegated with several musical assignments of differing difficulties. The tasks involved recognizing the changing directions of a melody or the identification of deviant tones. The harmonies used for the research were the compositions of Miguel Chuaqui – the head of the university's School of Music's composition program.
When the subjects received shocks, researchers found that there were quantifiable electrical potentials within the subjects' skin conductance, pupil dilation, and nervous systems. Using this data, the researchers measured their subjects' peripheral and central arousal, or the level of pain they experienced. Based on the study, Bradshaw's team uncovered that the alterations in stimulus arousal or net engagement related to the performance of musical tasks decreased when the difficulty of tasks increased. The research team proved, through the test, that the subjects' overall pain decreased when they focused on the music and the task at hand.
The Magic of Relaxation Music
The sensory channels in our bodies are activated by music. They provoke emotional responses and captivate mental attention to fight against the pain channels. The synergy of music and pain therefore reduces our bodies' response and increases tolerance. However, the magnitude of pain reduction differs among individuals owing to personality traits such as their ability to focus on a particular activity and their anxiety levels.
Relaxation Music Therapy to Help People with AIDS and Cancer Patients
Music's influence on pain has extended its use into several fields in terms of health and well-being. Music therapy is becoming increasingly popular and emerging as a whole new field in itself. The AMTA (American Music Therapy Association) reports that music is useful in addressing social, physical, emotional, and cognitive needs. Treatment does not only involve listening to music, but also singing, creating, and moving to music. Alleviation of pain, management of stress, improvement of communication, and enhancement of memory can be successfully completed by using music therapy.
Many recent studies have been conducted in different parts of the world to test the influence of music on people with personal issues and illnesses. The Drexel University's researchers, for instance, discovered that music can improve the BP levels in cancer patients and also elevate the moods of people suffering from AIDS or Alzheimer's disease. Researchers at Sweden's University of Gothenburg revealed that relaxation music not only helped subjects relax when listening to it, but also proved that they experienced a flurry of positive emotions at a higher frequency and with higher intensity. In addition, the same subjects showed signs of lower stress and their cortisol levels (stress hormone in humans) also reduced significantly.
The Findings and Revelations of the American Cancer Society
The ACS (American Cancer Society) denoted that relaxation music can help in reducing heart rate, breathing rates, and blood pressure. It can also lower the symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and depression to a great extent. Patients who receive chemotherapy and anti-nausea drugs in high doses can ease vomiting and nausea by using music therapy. Relaxation music also helps relieve the short-term pain experienced by cancer patients.
The ACS indicated that hospice patients such as those suffering from cancer or AIDS improved their quality of life through the power of relaxation music. Music therapy has helped in improving their relaxation and comfort levels while also aiding in pain control. In some patients, relaxation music has dilated veins and relaxed muscles, which has significantly helped decrease the discomfort experienced during invasive procedures.
Impact of Meditative Music on People Suffering with Alzheimer's disease
People suffering from Alzheimer's disease can make the most of relaxation music to achieve assistance in daily life. Even during the latter stages of Alzheimer's disease, a patient's ability to engross in musical activities and interact with rhythmic cues remains intact. The cognitive functioning necessary for the processing of these cues is impaired during the late stages, so unfamiliar relaxation music can help in relaxing patients by inducing sleep and managing stress. Sedative or meditative music with no syncopation or percussion and slower tempos has the potential to help people suffering from Alzheimer's disease change the routines which cause agitation and go to bed with relative ease.
Relaxation music has the ability to put listeners into a calm state of mind. Whether it involves stimulating a patient affected by dementia, retrieving memories, relieving pain, or soothing an individual who has had a long day, week, a month, or a year, relaxation music possesses the kind of healing power that arguably goes beyond scientific reasoning.

The use of brainwave entrainment and binaural beats for therapy and meditation has grown quite popular over the years. Brainwave entrainment is also known as brainwave synchronization. It is the method of bringing your brainwave frequencies to a certain state of mind by synchronizing them to a particular frequency of sound. In general, it helps you produce an ideal brainwave frequency with the help of an external audio influence. For instance, your brain will try to match its activities with the rhythmic beats you are listening to.
On the other hand, binaural beats are produced when two sounds are made together in harmony. They are a form of brainwave entrainment and are only audible for the brain. In binaural beats, the two sounds produced are of different frequencies. While one frequency is played in one ear, the other frequency is played in the other ear. The effect on binaural beats on the brain has been known to help in stress reduction and improved sleep.
Benefiting from brainwave entrainment
Brainwave entrainment can help you in many ways and provide you with a number of health benefits. Although people have recently started realizing the wonderful benefits of brainwave entrainment, the concept has been alive since ancient times. Shamans would use rhythmic chanting and drumbeats to put people in a trance. It is believed that the rhythmic beats are hypnotic and can put a person into different states of consciousness.
Some of the major health benefits you can see from brainwave entrainment are:
• It can help with depression. Brainwave entrainment can reduce the symptoms of depression or eliminate them entirely. The frequency produced can be used to change your brainwave frequencies to feel optimistic and happy.
• One of the popular uses of brainwave entrainment is that of inducing sleep. It is very effective for treating sleeplessness because it calms your mind and helps you relax. In other words, it helps you get to your delta state of consciousness, where you are in a very deep and dreamless sleep. This also means you get better rest and feel more energetic when you wake up.
• It helps with stress reduction and relieves anxiety or tension. With the hassle of everyday life, it is easy to start feeling the pressure of earning a living and making a life of your own. Brainwave entrainment can help you reach a state of consciousness where you become optimistic and light-hearted. This helps in relieving stress and maintaining a positive outlook.
• Brainwave entrainment has also been known to help people with high blood-pressure in maintaining an ideal blood-pressure level. This has a lot to do with the sense of relaxation and happiness it brings. Less worrying also means that your blood-pressure levels remain at a normal state. Brainwave entrainment is also known to regulate and improve your heart rate.
• People suffering from migraine and chronic headaches have been using brainwave entrainment for pain relief. This practice helps cure the symptoms of these conditions without the help of any medication.
• Certain frequencies used in brainwave entrainment can affect your immune system and enhance its function. When your brainwaves become out of balance, it can result in a weakened immune system. There are specific frequencies used in brainwave entrainment that help in restoring the natural balance within your body.
• Many people use brainwave entrainment for improving their sex drives. With the stress of a busy schedule, it is easy to send signals to your brain, which may increase tension in your mind and body. This can have a negative impact on your libido. With the right frequency, brainwave entrainment can help regulate the signals you send to your brain and improve your desire for sex.
• It has been observed in athletes that their physical performance and energy levels can be improved when they go through a brainwave entrainment session a few minutes before they begin playing.
• Brainwave entrainment has also proven useful in relieving mood swings and the symptoms of PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) in women. Since it helps with relaxation and happiness, it also makes you less likely to suffer from mood swings during PMS.
• The use of brainwave entrainment has also been implemented in addiction treatment. Substance addiction can damage your health in many ways, but it is not easy to overcome this issue. Brainwave entrainment can help you in getting rid of your addiction to prescription drugs, alcohol, illegal substances, and even cigarettes.
The benefits of brainwave entrainment are numerous and experts are continuing to study more on how our health can improve with its help. It gives you the ability to master your mind and control how you think. Brainwave entrainment may be your solution to whatever problem you are facing right now.
Benefiting from binaural beats
Among all the forms of brainwave entrainment, binaural beats are the most commonly used. They are highly effective for synchronizing your brain hemispheres. In simple terms, binaural beats give you the ability to combine your creative thinking and logical reasoning. This helps you in opening up your mind and welcoming answers that you may not have been able to do with just one brain hemisphere.
Binaural beats can give you a number of mental health benefits. Here are some of the benefits:
• They help in increasing your mental focus, so you can give your full concentration to the task at hand. This means that binaural beats can indirectly enhance your productivity. It is likely that you will be able to achieve more and accomplish more of your daily targets.
• Binaural beats can help transition your mind into a state of consciousness where you find it easier to comprehend and retain information. Many people have reported that using binaural beats while studying can help them in remembering what they have learnt. They are able to recall the information more easily and remember things more clearly.
• They are popularly used for boosting creativity in people. Many people have experienced a heightened ability to perform artistic tasks after using binaural beats. They are also known to increase alertness and wake your brain up during the day.
Anyone of any age can benefit from brainwave entrainment and binaural beats. With multiple physical and mental benefits, they can enhance your overall quality of life.

Born Willard Christopher Smith Jr. on September 25, 1968, Will Smith has gone on to receive fame as an actor and film producer. Although Smith was born in Philadelphia, he lived in nearby Wynnefield for much of his childhood. Smith's mother Caroline worked as a local school administrator in the state of Pennsylvania, and his father owned a refrigeration company. Smith was the second of four children and is of African-American and Native American heritage. Smith's parents separated when their son was only 13 years old, but they did not officially divorce until much later on.
Will Smith attended Overbrook High School and quickly developed the nickname "Prince" due to his ability to charm his way out of almost any situation. After Smith graduated from high school, he had an opportunity to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on an engineering scholarship; however, he decided to pursue a career in the entertainment field.
After turning down college, Smith pursued a career in music. While at a party, he met Jeffrey Townes; the pair would go on to become the performing duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. They eventually picked up another group member, Ready Rock C, and became a trio.
The group quickly rose to fame and picked up the first Grammy awarded in the Rap category in 1988. Not long after, Smith became a target of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for unpaid taxes. Before going bankrupt, Smith was offered a lifeline when the NBC television network gave him a contract. Smith and close friend Benny Medina had an idea for a new sitcom and proposed the idea to the network. This resulted in the creation of the show "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," which really put Smith on the acting map.
The show went onto become a classic sitcom, but Smith wanted to make something more of his acting career. During the show's immensely successful six year run, Smith explored many different film roles. He wanted to become the biggest movie star in the world, and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" acted as his gateway to success. Throughout the early 1990s, Smith starred in "Six Degrees of Separation" and "Bad Boys." The latter film shot Smith into the national spotlight and led to a career-defining role in "Independence Day." Playing the role of Captain Steven Hiller, Smith brought back the genre of science fiction with a bang; the film raked in more than $800 million and was the second highest-grossing film ever at that time.
The following two summers, Smith was once again the main draw card on the big screen, this time, as Agent J in "Men in Black" and as Robert Clayton Dean in "Enemy of the State." In 1999, Smith had the option of starring in one of two films: "The Matrix" or "Wild Wild West." Smith chose the latter, but the film bombed at the box office. Afterwards, Smith acknowledged that perhaps he hadn't made the best choice, and the role of Neo in "The Matrix" would have suited him better.
Over the next few years, Smith's acting career seemed to dwindle; although, he did star in a couple of sequels ("Men in Black II" and "Bad Boys II"). The year 2005 resulted in an upturn in the fortunes of Smith due to a starring role in the film "Hitch." Smith received multiple award nominations as Alex Hitchens, and he also landed main roles in "The Pursuit of Happyness" and "I am Legend." In the former film, Smith's real-life son Jaden played the role of Smith's son on screen.
Smith's star could not get any brighter during the later years of the 2000s decade, with some film critics proclaiming him to be the number one box office draw in Hollywood. After Barack Obama became president in 2009, he mentioned Smith as the most suitable actor to play his part in a potential film about his rise to power.
In 2012, Smith reprised his role of Agent J in the film "Men in Black III." The film was a resounding success, and Smith mentioned the possibility of a fourth film being added to the franchise sometime in the future. In May 2013, Smith will star alongside his son Jaden in "After Earth;" he is also a producer and co-writer of this film. Many film critics are excited to see the acting potential Jaden is showing, but they are not ready to write off the acting talents of his father just yet.

Will Smith is known for his acting and music career, but after the futuristic thriller "After Earth" is released, he may just be known for his story ideas as well. The film, which also stars his real-life son Jaden, comes from an original idea Smith had. He came up with the concept; then, he turned it over to "The Book of Eli" scribe Gary Whitta and director M. Night Shyamalan to write. The result is a sci-fi action film with plenty of excitement and spectacular CGI effects that looks primed to make plenty of money.
The film begins on a planet called Nova Prime, which is outside of the solar system that holds the planet Earth. Humans found Nova Prime after searching for a replacement for Earth, which was becoming uninhabitable due to a long series of catastrophic events. Once they did tests and saw that Nova Prime could sustain human life, everyone on Earth moved to the new planet. They left Earth behind, along with all the wildlife that were once threatened by the growing population of humans.
The colonization of Nova Prime went smoothly, and one thousand years later, the planet and the humans on it are thriving. Two of those humans are Gen. Cypher Raige (Will Smith), who is a very wise, patient, and stern military man who feels like his son Kitai (Jaden Smith) isn't living up to his potential. Kitai resents the fact that his father is taken away on long missions, which strains their relationship and makes them virtual strangers to each other. Kitai's mom Faia (Sophie Okonedo) tries to reassure Cypher that their son is just going through a phase and that he really just misses his dad. Together, they come up with a plan for Kitai to join his dad on his next long deployment in the hopes that it will bring them together.
The plan ends up working, but not in the way they thought. The father and son bond because their spaceship gets caught in a meteor storm and is heavily damaged. It crash lands onto Earth, where Cypher and Kitai soon realize they are the only two survivors from the spaceship. Cypher is badly wounded, but the distress beacon they need to call Nova Prime for help is far away, having flown off the spaceship as it was crashing. Kitai must go and get the beacon to get help for his dad, but he has never been to Earth and is completely unfamiliar with the terrain.
In the thousand years since humans left Earth, the planet has been overrun by animals that see humans as a threat to their survival. Several dangerous species see Kitai and immediately try to kill him, lest humans expand and threaten their natural habitats. Though he is very scared to face the animals, he remembers the words of his father, who explained that fear is a choice, even as danger lurks. Danger may be real, but Kitai can control his reaction to the danger by eliminating fear from the equation. This is much easier said than done, but the boy, who is only thirteen years old, has no choice but to try and shove his fear aside in order to find the beacon and save his father's life.
The film sets up plenty of scenarios where Kitai must face one or more wild animals, with one scene depicting a stampede that the poor boy was not expecting. It is a tall order for someone so young to have so much responsibility lying on his shoulders, but Jaden makes his character very believable. If Cypher thought that Kitai wasn't living up to his potential before, his mind will definitely be changed by the time the film is over. Whether the boy ever finds the beacon or not, the fact that he faced his fears while in an unfamiliar planet and risked his life to save his dad is a big deal.
Jaden has come a long way since his first movie "The Pursuit of Happyness," which also starred his father Will. In that film, he didn't have that many lines and looked cute and harmless most of the time. In "After Earth," he follows in his father's footsteps as an action hero with plenty of lines who is hardly harmless, especially to the wild animals trying to hunt him.
"After Earth" has a running time of 100 minutes and has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). It is set to be released on May 31, 2013.

Article Title: Selecting The Right Surgery Center For You

It goes without saying that selecting a surgery center is an important decision that you'll need to make before consenting to any operation. However, with so many surgical centers around, how do you make sense of all of your options and find the right facility for you? What should you look for when you're exploring treatment options?
In recent years, as medical technology has continued to advance, surgical centers have grown ubiquitous across the nation. These days, many procedures and operations that traditionally required hospitalization and lengthy recovery are often conducted on an outpatient basis in luxurious clinics. To find the right kind of clinic for you requires that you first have a clear understanding of your condition and prognosis and have explored all of the various treatment options at your disposal. With this information in hand, you can begin to explore your options in order to receive the best possible treatment.
It goes without saying that the most important thing about any surgical center is the quality of care provided. You need to be sure that the facility is equipped to address your problem and offer you the best chance at returning to full strength. While this might seem difficult to discern on the surface, there are telltale clues that you can identify that speak to the center's excellence. For instance, research the specific treatments offered, as well as the technology utilized during treatment. A commitment to the most advanced, state-of-the-art equipment speaks to the surgical center's drive to be the best. Plus, many surgical centers go to great lengths to offer amenities, such as comfortable recover rooms, cafeterias, and other benefits that should be considered. Also, don't be afraid to ask about the education and experience of the team on staff. While this information should always be taken with a grain of salt, it still provides a good barometer for who is employed in the offices.
Next, don't discount the personal interaction that you have with the staff when you stop by to explore the surgical center. It is absolutely essential that you feel comfortable with your doctor, anesthesiologist, nursing team, and anyone else who will be involved with your treatment, because it will go a long way toward providing you peace of mind leading up to and in the aftermath of your treatment. Don't be afraid to ask questions about your condition and the recommended treatment, even if you are concerned that it is a so-called "stupid question." Your doctor should have no problem putting your mind at ease and if you get the sense that he or she is getting frustrated then you should consider this to be a red flag and look elsewhere. The decision on scheduling a surgery is too important to not be at ease.
Another good idea before selecting a surgical center is to research its reputation. The Internet can be a great resource for this, but just be sure not to put too much stock on a particularly poor or glowing review. A disgruntled former patient or an overly enthusiastic marketing professional may skew these reviews and give you a false understanding of the clinic. However, if reviews seem to be universally glowing or negative it can help frame your decision. Also, asking your friends or family if they have any insight into the facility can be helpful because word of mouth travels fast and you never know who might have firsthand experience with the surgical center.
Of course, these are just a few examples of what to look out for when you're research surgical centers. Ultimately, it is about finding a place that you feel comfortable with, and that is an extremely personal decision.

Rating: PG (for thematic elements, smoking, and brief language)
Length: 98 minutes
Release date: May 17, 2013
Directed by: Dan Setton
Genre: Documentary
Producers of modern political documentaries often ask the viewer to invest emotionally in the film, accepting the film's premise and riding along on a typically emotional journey that explores the flim's plot. Director Dan Setton pulls viewers in from the very beginning of "State 194" by presenting a largely idealistic look at Salam Fayyad's efforts in 2009 to achieve statehood for the Palestine.
Fayyad, the Prime Minister at the time, was then attempting to help the Palestinians build the infrastructure needed to support a modern state. This included not only economic expansion of the region, but also an establishment of modern social services throughout. This plan followed the path taken by the nation's neighbor, Israel. To show Fayyad's efforts as clearly as possible, Setton follows Fayyad himself as he moves through several West Bank cities. The film was created to show a nonviolent approach to statehood, so the images shown are nonviolent in nature. They also aren't limited to Fayyad himself.
"State 194" is an attempt to present the complicated and highly charged topic of Palestinian statehood in well under two hours' time. To do so, Setton expands from Fayyad to other movers and shakers throughout the region, using clips and interviews to give the viewer a basic understanding of the situation. Those shown run a wide range of power players, including national leaders such as Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Prime Minister, Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian National Authority President, bloggers Madj Biltaji and Mahmoud El Mandawi, and political activists Yitzhak Frankenthal and Nabeel Sweety from The Parent Circle-Families Forum. The combination of these clips with the imagery of Fayyad discussing his path to statehood manages to leave the viewer feeling as though the plan put forth by Fayyad has a simplicity that's bound to work.
Setton takes a passionate approach toward the subject matter, but the information presented is a bit too heavy to evoke quite the level of emotion he appears to be trying for. "State 194" tries to cover over sixty-five years of history, beginning with Israel becoming a state. The information conveyed during the documentary is informative first and emotionally engaging second. This leads the viewer to watching in a state of intense immersion, followed quickly by detachment when the flow of facts grows too great. The various experts providing background information leads to this data deluge, with a presentation that's often contradictory as each presents his or her own opinion of the primary issue of statehood and how to proceed toward it.
Fayyad is shown to be a dreamer at times, a leader who truly cares for his people who's faced with resistance not only from other nations attempting to deny Palestine a seat at the UN table, but also from his own citizens. However, multiple awe-inspiring scenes are presented in the film that help to keep the mood of the documentary upbeat, with cheering villagers often welcoming Fayyad's arrival into the cities scattered along the West Bank. The film zeros in on this popularity in an effort to show Fayyad's dreams are welcomed by those most affected by them.
Visually, the documentary is beautiful in places, showing a Palestine that's rarely seen to outsiders. The nation is shown as a poor one that's determined to keep growing despite its political and economic issues. The people interviewed share a desire to improve the nation, though their approaches can differ radically on how to do so. The plot is kept moving along quickly and interestingly, with smooth transitions between the Fayyad imagery and that of the various archival clips and accompanying interviews.
"State 194" is at its core a representation of a short moment in time. It has no true ending in the sense of a conclusion to Fayyad's efforts. Followers of the politics of the region will note Fayyad failed in his attempts and resigned in 2013. As the film ends, those unfamiliar with the issue of statehood are left with an increase in their knowledge of the issue. They're also left with a view of Fayyad that's highly political in nature, but narrow by design. Little is mentioned about Fayyad outside of the political arena, and the subject is strictly kept focused on his efforts to improve the nation's infrastructure.
As the film's final act, the ending has little to do with Fayyad himself. The end covers the efforts of Mahmoud Abbas as he attempts to convince the General Assembly of the UN to recognize Palestine as the 194th member state. The attempt fails, and shortly thereafter Fayyad resigns.

Article Title: How to Ease Slipped Disc Symptoms While Traveling

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Slipped disc symptoms can manifest when one of the protective, shock-absorbing cushions (commonly called "discs") that separate the stacked vertebrae of the spine splits, tears, or ruptures, causing its tough outer wall of cartilage to fail and sometimes allowing its inner gel to leak into the surrounding tissue. As a result, pressure may be exerted on the small nerves on the disc wall, the nerve roots exiting the spinal cord, or on the spinal cord itself.
This condition can be extremely painful, and because it often originates in the lower back, the discomfort may be exacerbated when a patient sits for prolonged periods of time. Unfortunately, the prospect of being trapped in the uncomfortable seat of an airplane, train, bus, or car may deter some individuals from leaving home. This can be a real hardship for someone who is required to travel regularly for business or family reasons, or would simply like to take a much-needed vacation.
Instead of avoiding travel altogether, there are steps you can take to lessen the intensity of your slipped disc symptoms while in transit, such as:
• Packing Light and Lifting Luggage in Stages – When lifting heavy objects, such as a suitcase, it's always best to move slowly and break the action down into smaller steps. For example, raise your carry-on bag to the top of your seat, rest, and then lift it to the overhead bin in a separate motion. Also, bend at your knees and use the strength of your leg muscles instead of your back muscles. Avoid twisting your lower back to reposition yourself; instead, pivot with your feet. Or, to eliminate the hassles of dealing with luggage, consider shipping what you'll need ahead of time.
• Moving Around as Much as Possible – Sitting can lead to stiffness in the hamstrings and hip flexor muscles, which puts pressure on the lower back. Also, when you sit, the lower back becomes solely responsible for supporting the weight of the upper body (as opposed to standing, which shifts much of the load to the leg muscles). For a patient suffering from slipped disc symptoms, this added strain may create additional pain. When flying, get up at least once every hour, walk around the cabin, and lightly stretch your shoulders, neck, and legs. If you are traveling by car, make regular stops so you can get out and move around. While riding on a train or bus, be sure to take advantage of any stops.
• Alternating the Application of Cold and Heat – If your pain flares up while you are en route, place a small bag of ice between your lower back and the seatback. Be sure to have some portable, disposable hot packs on hand to use as needed, too. It's best to avoid prolonged heat; instead, alternate ice and heat for 10-15 minutes each. Also, pack a heating pad and reusable cold packs to use after you arrive at your destination.
• Taking Over-The-Counter Anti-Inflammatory Medication – Although ibuprofen won't cure a slipped disc, it can make your journey more pleasant. If your pain has been unresponsive to over-the-counter medications, talk with your doctor, who may prescribe a stronger pain reliever to help ease you through your discomfort while traveling.
• Bringing Along Your Own Back Support – A small lumbar support pillow can make a non-ergonomic seat much more bearable. In a pinch, an airline pillow or rolled up blanket, jacket, or sweater placed between the seat and the inward curve of your lower back will suffice. In addition, proper back support requires bottom-up leverage from your feet, so if your seat is too high, rest your feet on a footrest (or makeshift footrest) to keep your knees bent at a right angle and avoid stressing your lower back. Finally, always maintain good posture while seated.
With some general awareness and forethought on how to make yourself comfortable while traveling, you can avoid common mistakes that trigger and aggravate back pain. In turn, this will reduce your stress level and ultimately make your voyage more enjoyable, despite your slipped disc symptoms.

Article Title: Sports Injuries and Spondylolisthesis Symptoms in Children

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Spondylolisthesis symptoms can arise when one of the spinal vertebrae slips out of line. While vertebral slippage may be inherited or present at birth, it can also result from spinal injury or trauma and is frequently seen in athletes suffering from spondylolysis, a tiny crack or stress fracture in the back of the vertebrae. Spondyloysis commonly results from the overuse and repeated extension of the spine through a bending backward motion.
While children are typically more resilient and flexible than adults, as their activities become more specialized and their sporting events become more aggressive and competitive, they can risk putting excessive stress on their immature skeletal systems. Thus, children who participate in gymnastics, diving, swimming, and dance may be susceptible to spondylolisthesis, as may those who participate sports like football, soccer, hockey, and volleyball.
The most common symptom of spondylolisthesis is pain that spreads across the lower back and worsens when the back is arched. A child may also have difficulty walking, hamstring tightness that limits his or her ability to bend, or poor posture. If the vertebral slippage is severe and spinal nerves are compressed, the pain may shoot down one or both legs and cause weakness or numbness in the legs and feet. When a child experiences any of these symptoms, a doctor will likely seek to confirm the existence of a stress fracture or vertebral slippage and rule out other hidden defects through a spinal x-ray, bone scan, or CT scan.
After the condition is confirmed, the first step in relieving and healing spondylolisthesis symptoms is rest. The child should temporarily stop engaging in the activity that caused the injury. Physical therapy designed to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles, which support the backbone, may be recommended. If the child needs additional relief, he or she can wear a back brace, which flattens out the normal curvature of the spine. Usually, the brace is worn for a few months as the child moves about throughout the day, and as the symptoms lessen, the amount of time in the brace is reduced.
Youthful bodies generally heal quickly, so in most spondylolisthesis cases involving children, the symptoms improve following a period of rest and surgical intervention is not required. However, if conservative treatment is unsuccessful in relieving the pain, or if the child's symptoms worsen, spondylolisthesis surgery may be recommended. Generally, the procedure involves the removal of vertebrae, discs, or bone spurs to achieve decompression of the nerves, or a spinal fusion to immobilize vertebrae and make the back more stable.
While every sport carries with it the potential for injury, children should not necessarily be discouraged from pursuing the activities they enjoy. Through participation in sports, they can learn valuable lessons in discipline, sportsmanship, and socialization. Therefore, an awareness of the causes and prevention of sports injuries can help make athletics a more positive experience for a child. Toward that end, here are some general guidelines:
• Safety Equipment – Make sure the child uses and wears appropriate, properly fitted, and well-maintained safety equipment, such as helmets, padding, shoes, eyewear, and mouth guards. The equipment should be approved by the organization that governs the sport.
• Playing Surfaces – Look out for cracks, holes, and ruts in playing fields that could cause a child to trip. High impact sports like basketball and running should be performed on appropriate, forgiving surfaces, such as wooden basketball courts and rubberized tracks.
• Adult Supervision – Supervise the child's activities. A qualified adult with training in first aid should always be present to enforce the rules, mandate the use of safety equipment, and match the players according to their size, skill level, and physical and emotional maturity.
• Adequate Preparation – Ensure that the child is adequately hydrated, properly warmed-up, and knows how to play before he or she heads out onto the field.
By taking a few preventive measures, a child's risk of injury while he or she participates in athletics can be minimized. In so doing, you will not only allow him or her to have fun, but also to enjoy the long-term health benefits of being physically active.

Article Title: Reclaiming Your Life Through Spinal Stenosis Treatment

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
The first step in spinal stenosis treatment is often focused on pain management. This painful condition can arise when a herniated disc, bone spurs, or other tissue deposits cause the open area of the spinal canal to narrow in one or more places, such as the space at the center, the canals through which the spinal nerves branch out, or the spaces between the vertebrae. As a result, pressure is exerted on the spinal cord and the nerves that travel through it. While some people are born with abnormally narrow spinal canals and others develop it as a result of trauma or disease, most patients experience spinal stenosis after age 50 due to the naturally occurring wear and tear on the spine. Indeed, spinal deterioration is a phenomenon commonly associated with aging.
When left untreated, spinal stenosis can lead to a loss of flexibility along with chronic pain that limits the patient's daily activities, such as working, doing chores, traveling, and exercising. Surgery can be effective, but it is usually only recommended as a last resort if the patient's pain does not respond to conservative treatment.
Following a proper diagnosis, a patient's non-surgical spinal stenosis treatment options may include:
• Activity modification – When being treated for spinal stenosis, patients are usually counseled to avoid activities that exacerbate their symptoms. Most patients find that they feel more comfortable in a flexed forward position; therefore, they may be advised to try walking while bending forward over a walker or shopping cart or riding a stationary bicycle while leaning on the handlebars. Pain also may be eased by sitting in a recliner instead of a straight-backed chair.
• Exercise – Although it may seem counterintuitive, a lack of activity can lead to further debilitation. Moving the spine can bring oxygen to its various components, help blood to circulate, and strengthen the back muscles. Therefore, it is important for patients to remain as active as they can tolerate. An appropriate spinal stenosis exercise regimen consisting of low impact activities, such as walking and swimming, along with movements designed to improve the strength, range of motion, and flexibility of the spine, is usually integral to any treatment program.
• Epidural steroid injections – While not curative, an injection of cortisone into the epidural space may temporarily relieve the symptoms associated with spinal stenosis. Up to three injections may be administered over the course of several months. Generally, if a patient experiences relief, he or she will likely be considered a good candidate for later spinal stenosis surgery, should it be deemed necessary.
• Anti-inflammatory medications – Over-the-counter medicines such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin may be helpful in relieving the pain associated with spinal stenosis.
• Alternating hot and cold packs – Some spinal stenosis symptoms may be responsive to the application of heat or ice. Heat can relax the muscles and stimulate blood flow, which aids in the healing process, but prolonged heat should be avoided. Ice may be helpful to numb the affected area, reduce swelling, and achieve temporary relief after exercise. A frozen bag of peas works well for this purpose. It's best to alternate the application of heat and ice for 10-15 minutes each.
• A back or neck brace – A doctor may recommend a spinal brace or cervical collar to provide stability, immobilize the weak structures, and discourage motion that causes pain.
• Massage – Deep tissue massage that utilizes direct pressure to release tension in the ligaments, tendons, and muscles may be useful in alleviating the pain and discomfort of this degenerative neck and back condition.
If the patient's pain persists after he or she follows a conservative treatment regimen incorporating some or all of these techniques, surgical intervention may be recommended. Among the surgical options available are minimally invasive procedures that result in a quicker recovery period that allows the patient to reclaim his formerly active lifestyle much sooner than that which could be expected following traditional open spine surgery.

If you're preparing to undergo a spine procedure to help alleviate chronic back pain, neck pain, or any other similar symptoms, it stands to reason that you undoubtedly have several questions on your mind. This is one of the reasons that it is so important that you do your due diligence and find a doctor with whom you have a close relationship and excellent working rapport, because you need to feel comfortable to ask any and all questions that come to mind, and also be satisfied with the information you receive. This peace of mind can go a long way toward managing expectations and helping you rest assured that you're making a right decision by scheduling surgery.
Here are some examples of the frequently asked questions that doctors hear that you might want to keep in your back pocket and be prepared to ask:
• Does this procedure require general anesthesia or another kind of sedation? Depending on the specific surgery recommended, the patient may require various degrees of anesthesia. For instance, an individual who schedules a relatively minimally invasive operation may only require mild sedation in order to complete the procedure. Alternatively, a patient who requires spinal fusion to stabilize the spinal column may require hospitalization and traditional general anesthesia.
• What is the exact goal of surgery? In some instances, the purpose of spine surgery is to stabilize a region of the spine that has become severely deteriorated. In this case, a bone graft and surgical hardware is usually installed in the spinal column. In other cases, the goal of surgery might not be to "fix" anything, per se, but rather to remove the source of the patient's pain. For example, if a patient is suffering from symptoms that arise from a herniated disc in the spinal column, the doctor may recommend a patient have the herniated disc material (or the disc itself) removed to alleviate the subsequent nerve compression that is causing the patient's discomfort in the first place. Especially in instances when pain can be traced to the presence of a degenerative spine condition, the goal of treatment isn't to heal or undo years of wear and tear, but rather to remove the source of the patient's pain.
• What are the potential risks and limitations to surgery? Do certain surgeries come with high risk factors? – This question is one of the most important that you can ask because it is essential that you weigh your symptoms and discomfort against the potential risks, limitations, and hardships that can be associated with your treatment of choice. Even if a surgery is relatively low-risk, you still need to have a clear understanding of what to expect in the days and weeks following your procedure to ensure that you are prepared for what it will take to ensure that you find the results you desire after the surgery. What's more, while no one likes to talk about it, with any major surgery there is an inherent risk for complications, such as excessive scar tissue formation, blood clots, infection, hemorrhaging, and other issues that you need to be mindful of before you begin.
The ultimate goal of asking questions is to know exactly what to expect with your surgery, which will be extremely helpful leading up to and in the immediate aftermath of your procedure. Of course, these are just a few examples of questions you can ask. Never feel hesitant to use your doctor as a resource. That's what doctors are there for.

When it comes to preparing for a medical procedure to manage your back or neck pain, it is exceedingly important that you do your due diligence and ensure that you are completely comfortable with your diagnosis, prognosis, and doctor before consenting to any treatment regimen. This additional legwork on your part can lead to much needed peace of mind and help manage expectations leading up to and in the aftermath of your treatment. So where should you turn for the information that you require?
The first thing you'll want to do if you're suffering from chronic back pain, neck pain, or any other symptoms is to research what could possibly be causing your discomfort – particularly if your pain persists for more than several days. Now, no one is saying that you should self-diagnose yourself and begin treatment, and more often than not the cause of your pain is less severe than the internet may lead you to believe, but it can be really helpful to at least have a rudimentary understanding of what the problem is. By taking the time to learn about the spinal anatomy, you might find that you are less overwhelmed when speaking with your doctor about your condition. This helps increase the clarity of the conversation, can help you assist the doctor in diagnosing the problem, and give you a unique insight into what the problem is.
Next, you'll want to schedule a consultation with a doctor or spine specialist to provide a diagnosis of your condition and begin to explore treatment options. Finding a doctor can sometimes be tricky, particularly if you don't have a specialist in mind, because you want to make sure that you are getting the highest level of care. A good place to always start is within your insurance network, because there is no sense in paying more out of pocket than you need. From there, take the time to research your options. If you are comfortable talking about your medical situation, for example, it can be extremely helpful to ask friends and family for recommendations. You might also consider relying on social networking for further insight. Another option is to read reviews online, although it is always good to take these with a grain of salt because reviews may be biased – in either direction – and can falsely influence your decision.
Once you have found a doctor that you feel you can trust, and your problem has been diagnosed, explore all of your treatment options to ensure that you are heading in the right direction. For starters, do what you can to understand exactly what is happening to you and how a specific treatment course may help your recovery. This understanding can go a long way toward maintaining proper expectations moving forward and help you maintain positive during the entire experience. For instance, a regimen of stretching exercises can be extremely effective in increasing spinal flexibility and reducing pain, but relief does not come overnight and can sometimes take several weeks to begin to show results. Understanding this beforehand is essential so that you don't expect instantaneous results.
Additionally, you should also work hard to explore your treatment options, especially if the doctor is recommending that you schedule surgery. Above all else, never feel pressured and take the time to research alternative options and get a second opinion. You'll be glad that you did.

One of the reasons that healthcare employment continues to draw students and individuals looking for a career change is that this field is less affected by economic factors as many other industries. In fact, as the American population continues to age and the baby boomers enter retirement and later life, the need for talented, qualified medical professionals has never been higher. What's more, when you factor in the relative job security, opportunities for good pay, and personal satisfaction that comes with working with people, often when they need it most, the appeal to working in modern medicine is very clear.
One of the nice things about healthcare employment is the vast variety of potential jobs out there, from administrative to medical, regardless of your interests and level of expertise, you're bound to find the right fit with a little work. Here are some things to keep in mind when you begin to consider a career in healthcare:
• How much education are you willing to commit to? Everyone knows that becoming a medical doctor takes extensive training, but a commitment to higher learning isn't reserved just for those looking to become a physician. Many specializations, including anesthesiology and nurse practitioners also require graduate degrees and specialization.
• What field do you want to work in? Medicine is obviously extremely diverse and different people will be drawn to different aspects of the field. It is important to figure out what type of medicine appeals to you most and that you want to make a commitment to, so that you don't waste time pursuing a path that doesn't end up leaving you satisfied.
• Where do you want to work? Oftentimes it is helpful to attend school in the same city or state where you hope to settle down because your school may be able to help you find an internship, network you with people in your desired field, and help you find a sense of community that can be so important.
• Is medicine right for you? Above all else, you want to make sure that a career in healthcare is something you really want to do and that you are exploring this career path for the right reasons. While it may be appealing to become a doctor for the prestige and potential opportunity, the last thing you want to do is to go in with improper expectations or motivations. Some people are turned away by the irregular hours, high stress, and the toll a career in a hospital can have on a person both mentally and physically. Make sure you are completely comfortable with the good and the bad of healthcare before pursuing a career.
In addition to the medical professionals needed to diagnose and treat patients, an extensive support staff must also be employed to ensure that things run smoothly. Everyone from office managers and administrators to janitorial staff and insurance professionals are essential cogs in the system.
The long and short of it is there are a tremendous variety of jobs for individuals who want to make a commitment to healthcare. Just make sure that you take the time to ask questions and research your options.

"Snap out of it," they say. "What do you have to be sad about?" they ask. These people have clearly never struggled with depression. It's not something that can be brushed off or snapped out of; it's not something that only coincides with negative life events. For many individuals, it's simply a black cloud that tarnishes everything. A promotion at work, a new relationship, a new grandchild – even these happy occasions aren't enough to overcome the deepest feelings of despair and hopelessness. And, honestly, not much can. But there are some coping mechanisms that could turn that cloud into at least a slightly lighter shade of gray.
Confide in a Friend
You may not want to talk, and you may not want to leave the house, but this isn't the time to alienate yourself. Even if it's just to one person, reach out and let someone know what you're going though. Explain to them that it's not just a little bit of the blues and that you need their support right now. If you don't feel like you have a friend or family member who you can confide in, make an appointment with a therapist or attend a support group. It may not seem like it, but a little human interaction will do you some good.
Get Some Fresh Air
When's the last time you got out of bed to do a non-fundamental task (ie something other than using the restroom, eating a meal, or going to work)? It's probably been a while, huh? Drag yourself out of bed and put on some shoes. Walk around the block – just once. Do you feel even an ounce better? As much as you may not want to, make a point to get out of the house and go on a brief walk at least once a day. You may find that even a 10-minute walk will make you feel at least a little more alive (if even for a few minutes).
Know When to Seek Professional Help
If you've started thinking about harming yourself or others, it's time to take your mental health more seriously. Seeing a mental health professional is nothing to be ashamed of – after all, it's not like you WANT to feel this way. If you're open to taking medication to ease your depression, make an appointment with a psychiatrist. He or she may prescribe an antidepressant or anti-anxiety drug, and could also refer you to a therapist. If you'd rather take a drug-free approach, then make an appointment with a therapist who can talk you through your feelings.
Whether you make an appointment with a psychiatrist or therapist doesn't matter – just make an appointment with some type of mental health provider. Be honest with your practitioner and let him or her know that you're experiencing feelings of hopelessness and that you want to feel better. It may take some time, but a psychiatrist or therapist should be able to provide the help you need. Keep in mind that you can always switch providers if you don't feel like you're being heard or don't think you're receiving the help you need.
Above all else, just be sure to take care of yourself.

Having a strong relationship with your doctor has clear advantages. While you may be one of those people who infrequently goes to the doctor, establishing a level of trust with the physician is extremely important on the occasion that you do need his or her help. So what are the benefits to having a good working relationship with your doc, what can you do to improve this relationship, and what should you look for in a primary physician in the first place.
For many individuals, a doctor is an anonymous face at a walk-in clinic who prescribes low-grade medication when a sinus infection won't abate or a sprained ankle is causing extensive pain. However, the draw to having a doctor who knows you, knows your medical history, and is invested in you – as a person – should not be overlooked. For starters, having a bond with your doctor can go a long way to establishing trust and peace of mind when extensive treatment is required. This stands to reason, because most people would rather get news about their health – one of the most personal things imaginable – from someone that they know and respect.
Obviously this bond is not something that can be created overnight and if you are one of the fortunate ones who rarely gets sick, it may seem even more difficult to stand out from the hundreds or thousands of patients that a doctor may see in a given year. The best thing that you can do to maintain a relationship with your doctor is to be consistent with the same physician. Even if you only schedule an annual physical or an infrequent appointment, having all of your medical records in one place can be extremely advantageous. When you visit countless clinics and doctors, records of immunizations or previous sicknesses, for example, may not be stored together in a single place, impacting the diagnosis process, potentially leading to delays or errors down the road.
The first thing you want to do when you're looking for a new doctor is to do legwork to find someone that you're comfortable with. After all, it is much easier to develop a relationship with someone that you have a natural chemistry with and makes you feel at ease. Obviously, the first place to start when you're searching for doctors is close to your home, within your insurance network. From there, you may expand your search if the need arises, but keep in mind, if you need to visit your doctor regularly, you probably don't want to drive all across town.
When you're interviewing potential doctors, pay close attention to their education and experience, but also their manner and personality. If they seem distracted or frustrated answering your questions, it is probably a good idea to move on, because this often speaks to their bedside manner. Clearly, you want a doctor who is best equipped to deliver the quality of care that you require, but having a comfort level with your doctor is exceedingly important, especially when you are in need of extensive care.
Another good way to strengthen your relationship with your doctor is to do your homework and educate yourself on your health. If you are told that you have a certain condition, research what that means, what treatment options are available to you, and the general prognosis of the condition, so you can ask educated questions.
To learn more about how you can improve your relationship with your doctor, and why it is so important, speak with your doctor. They'll likely appreciate that you are making an effort.

Over the years, two significant things have continued to happen in modern medicine: we've furthered our understanding of how the body works and medical technology has rapidly grown in areas that were inconceivable as recently as a decade ago. As a result, many conditions, ailments, and even diseases can be treated with much more accuracy and thoroughness than in previous generations. And, perhaps, nowhere is this expansion in technology quite as prevalent as with spine surgery.
To illustrate this point, it can be helpful to work under the confines of a general example. Consider, for the purposes of this article, that you suffer from a herniated disc in your lower back. This condition often develops in older individuals as a result of years of wear and tear on the spinal column, and is defined as a rupture in the outer disc wall, which allows the inner nuclear material to extrude from the disc and seep into the spinal column.
In years past, if you suffered from chronic back pain or other symptoms as a result of the presence of a herniated disc, and no nonsurgical treatment had delivered the results you wanted, your only real option was to schedule a spinal fusion procedure. During this surgery, the team of surgeons would make a large incision, cut through muscles and other soft tissue, and eventually make their way into the spinal canal. Once in position, the surgeon would remove the degenerated disc, replace it with a bone graft, and stabilize the affected vertebrae with surgical hardware.
The problem with this approach is that it is highly invasive and requires the patient to undergo several weeks – or even months – of post-operative rehabilitation to return to full strength. Then, when you consider the risk for potential complications, such as infection, hemorrhaging, or even graft rejection, the risks may overwhelm the potential good.
Today, on the other hand, if you had the same herniated disc, you've got many more options. While spinal fusion is an absolutely essential procedure for some patients – particularly when spinal stability is at risk – many other people are finding the relief they require thanks to state-of-the-art endoscopic technology.
The appeal of an endoscopic technique is that it takes advantage of highly technical medical equipment that can be inserted into the spinal column through a very small incision in the back. A series of telescoping tubes gently pushes tissue aside, rather than cutting it, greatly limiting collateral damage and helps reduce the length and difficulty of post-operative recovery. In fact, these procedures are so easy – relatively speaking – that they can usually be completed in an outpatient environment, meaning you can return home the same day as the procedure.
Of course, endoscopic spine surgery is just one example of the emerging technologies that are driving the medical field, but they speak to the new and innovative ways that we're treating the same problems that have afflicted individuals for years, such as herniated discs.
To learn more about innovative technologies in the medical field, speak with your doctor, read journals, and research all of your options before consenting to a surgery.

If your physician has advised you to undergo an operation for spinal stenosis, you may not have given his or her opinion a second thought. Before you agree to go under the knife, do yourself a favor and be an advocate for your own health. Learn as much as you can about the condition and its various treatment methods, and don't be afraid to receive a second – or even a third – opinion.
Understanding the Condition
It's surprising how many patients consent to operations with little concept of what it is that the surgeon will be attempting to correct. So, what is spinal stenosis? It's a narrowing of the spinal canal, which is the space that houses the spinal cord.
The spinal canal is formed by the large openings in the centers of the vertebrae, which are the bone structures that make up the "backbone." Nerves branch from the spinal cord, pass through small openings on the sides of the vertebrae, and run throughout the body to relay sensory and motor messages from the brain. Intervertebral discs are located between articulating vertebrae and act as shock absorbers to lessen the impact that's placed on the vertebrae. These spinal components (and many others that haven't been mentioned) are all susceptible to damage, especially as a result of the natural aging process. When these components become inflamed, dislocated, or otherwise damaged, they can invade the spinal canal, causing spinal stenosis.
Many patients who suffer from spinal stenosis experience no symptoms at all. This is typically because a neural structure has not been affected despite the canal being narrowed. When neural compression does occur, though, patients can experience localized pain as well as numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, and radiating pain throughout the areas of the body that are controlled by the affected nerve.
Compression in the cervical spine can cause symptoms in the head, neck, upper back, arms, and/or hands, while compression in the lumbar spine can lead to discomfort in the lower back, hips, buttocks, legs, and/or feet.
The Surgical Process
Because spinal stenosis can have many causes, there can also be many surgical approaches to treat the condition. For the sake of simplicity, let's assume that a patient's spinal stenosis has been caused by a herniated disc. The surgeon would decompress the affected neural structure by:
- Making a large incision in the neck or back
- Dissecting musculature and soft tissues to gain access to the spine
- Removing the affected disc
- Inserting an intervertebral cage into the space once occupied by the affected disc
- Injecting the cage with bone graft material
- Using surgical hardware to fuse the cage and adjacent vertebrae together
Following this type of operation, you can expect to stay in the hospital for at least several nights and should anticipate an arduous rehabilitation.
Explore Your Options
Some patients are candidates for minimally invasive procedures as an alternative to open neck or back operations for spinal stenosis. Ask your physician about these procedures and find out if you're a candidate. Don't forget to seek a second opinion before you consent to any type of surgical procedure.

If you suffer from persistent back pain – either in the aftermath of an injury or just as a byproduct of growing older – you undoubtedly are eager to find a treatment regimen that will help you overcome your discomfort. The good news in this instance is that there is no shortage of possible techniques out there that might provide you with the relief you desire. The trick is to work closely with a doctor to determine what approach will give you the best chance of managing your pain, increasing your spinal flexibility, and improving your overall spine health. For some individuals, an integral component to this treatment plan will be strengthening the lower back.
For some individuals, the prospect of back exercise when you suffer from chronic lower back pain may seem daunting. After all, if you struggle with regular mobility, the idea of putting any additional strain on your lower back may seem inconceivable. However, by working closely with your doctor and a certified physical therapist, it is possible to begin to manage your back pain with the correct types of back exercises.
The benefit to physical therapy is essentially twofold. Using carefully selected stretches and exercises both strengthens the muscles that supports the back and increases flexibility in the lumbar spine in the lower back. This increased strength and mobility, in turn, alleviates some of the strain placed on the spinal column, reducing symptoms. So, what are some examples of back exercises that might be beneficial?
• Low-impact exercise – Any aerobic exercise that doesn't put needless strain on the body can help reduce body fat, alleviating some of the burden placed on the spine. Swimming is particularly popular because it isn't as jarring on the joints as running, for example.
• Partial sit-ups – Abdominal crunches strengthen the core muscles and don't require much time or space.
• Yoga, Pilates, and other stretching exercises – These exercises help improve balance and flexibility, and can also improve posture and other factors that help alleviate discomfort.
With all of this said, it is extremely important to also differentiate between taking advantage of a custom-tailored treatment regimen and going it alone. While back pain is extremely common and there are no shortages of possible exercises and stretching techniques currently available, the wrong approach may prove entirely ineffective, or worse still, make your condition even more severe.
Additionally, it is vital that you go into physical therapy with the proper expectations. There are no magical stretching techniques that will provide you instant relief. In fact, it may take several weeks or even months to begin to see the results that you require. This can be discouraging in the early stages but the long-term benefits of exercise will pay dividends. Furthermore, stretching and exercise are typically just one component of nonsurgical treatment. It may also be recommended that you use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, heat/cold therapy, and other similar techniques to address your chronic pain. It will depend entirely on your overall health, the severity of your symptoms, and the cause of the problem.

Although Oklahoma City shares many characteristics with other American cities, its unique location and history make it an obligatory stop for anyone interested in Western culture. For years, Oklahoma City has been at the center of American cattle production, which has also made it one of the capitals of cowboy culture. So don your Stetson and your boots, and get ready to learn all about the American West at any of the following locations throughout the city.
Your first stop might be the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, which plays host to an impressive collection of Western art. The museum showcases everything from paintings of western scenes and gear worn by cowboys of bygone eras to antique Native American objects. Also featured at the museum is a replica cattle town of the 1890s, furnished with all of the buildings associated with a burgeoning turn-of-the-century town, including a school, church, and train depot.
If looking at everything the museum has to offer gets you in the mood to see a modern cowboy experience, a few minutes outside Downtown Oklahoma City is Stockyards City. Here, in the home of the world's largest cattle auction, you can watch real cowboys go to work every Monday and Tuesday. If you happen to visit on a Saturday night, you can also enjoy a Western music concert that celebrates one of the nation's most storied musical genres. After taking in these spectacles, it'll be no surprise if you want to purchase your own western clothing, jewelry, or tack. At Stockyards City, you can actually watch artisans as they produce every piece of cowboy equipment you can think of, from handcrafted saddles to durable boots and spurs. You can cap off your visit with a trip to Cattleman's Steakhouse for an outstanding steak dinner.
Of course, Western culture doesn't just consist of cowboys and cattle production. Oklahoma is also a land rich in Native American cultures, with about 40 tribes that call the state their home. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum includes historical articles created by Native Americans, but if you want to experience the living, breathing spirit of their cultures, head to the Red Earth Festival, which is held every June in downtown Oklahoma City. Representatives from tribes throughout the plains states and beyond gather in one of the largest Native American events in the nation. You'll be able to watch traditional dance competitions and a parade, as well as enjoy a selection of delicious food. Even if you can't schedule a June visit, you will still have the opportunity to drop by the accompanying Red Earth Museum, which is open throughout the year and features a collection of about 1,400 artifacts you can observe.
Even if you're not a big fan of old Western movies, it might be worth your while to drop by any of these locations during your trip to OKC so you can learn a little about some of the cultures and lifestyles that shaped much of the country.

Have a large, plasma-screen television that you need to move? How about dozens of database servers? No matter the size or number of electronics you need moved, moving electronic items anywhere in Phoenix, where temperatures can range from frigidly cold in the winter to scorching hot in the summer, requires care. After all, if your electronics are exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures, they can be damaged and possible even destroyed. Of course, extreme temperatures aren't the only threat to your valuable electronics. The shock of being bumped around in a vehicle or dropped onto the ground inadvertently can also cause severe damage to your belongings, or even destroy them. In many cases, the heavy weight and awkward size of many electronics make them very difficult for the average person to move on their own.
For these reasons and several others, many people will choose to hire professional electronics movers instead of taking on the task (and assuming the risks) of moving these heavy, valuable items on their own. Hiring a moving company to pack, load, and transport your electronics to their destination isn't in itself a difficult thing to do, but deciding which moving company to choose can often be a daunting proposition when there are dozens of them serving your city. One of the best ways to expedite your search for the best electronics moving company is to peruse the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website. Check out the background information on any moving companies you are considering, and if they have poor ratings or you see that they have had numerous complaints, it is best to move on to another moving company that you feel has more integrity.
Another tip for finding a good moving company would be to ask your family and friends about the moving companies they have used. This word of mouth is ideal, because your social circle will tell you all about their experiences with a given moving company and let you know whether or not it is worth your time to pursue hiring them.
Once you have found a moving company that you would like to further consider, the next step is to get a quote. Generally speaking, many movers will provide over-the-phone or online quotes. Usually, sight-unseen quotes are perfectly acceptable for single-item moves, since the company can readily size up over the phone how much work would be involved in relocating one television or a single server bank. However, if your move is a complex project and will involve packing and loading many items, it may be worth having an in-home or in-office estimate performed to ensure that you are getting a thorough and comprehensive assessment.
Finally, when it comes down to deciding on a moving date, be sure to call your prospective moving company as soon as possible. Most moving companies are usually slammed during the summer and other times of year when people are usually moving, especially if the move is to occur during a busy time of year, such as the summer.

Has the time come to hire long distance movers? If so, then you may want a few tips that can make the whole process of hiring and working with a long distance moving company as easy as possible. Thankfully, should you hire a professional moving company that has a lot of experience and skill in performing long distance moves, then you shouldn't expect to have any problems. Still, it always helps to know ahead of time what to expect when you are hiring a moving company, and what you can do to make the experience truly successful.
One of the best things you can do before even getting your first moving quote is to downsize. Not only will it make moving easier and quicker if you pare down the amount of belongings you are moving, but it will also make the move cheaper in the end because you will have fewer items that will need packing, loading, and transporting. But, of course, then comes the million-dollar question, "how do I get rid of all that stuff?" The easy answer to that difficult and (often) emotionally charged issue is that you need to determine how much stuff you will really need to take along to your new home. If you are scaling down from a three-bedroom empty nest rancher on a quarter acre lot to a deluxe one-bedroom condo in the sky, you will not want to be saddled with tons of furniture that you will no longer need. So, if you don't foresee having to use all the furnishings you have now, or you haven't used certain items in over one year, then donate them to a local charity. You could even use the donations as tax deductions*.
Once you have eliminated the items you no longer need in your home, then you can begin preparing your current home for the movers to arrive. Usually, it is best to pack all personal items, such as insurance documents, clothing you will need during the move, blankets and bedding, and other items that you will want to have handy during the duration of the moving process. Your moving company should have environmentally friendly, reusable boxes that you can use to pack your belongings for the move.
If you have children or pets, you will also want to consider finding a trustworthy sitter who will take care of your little loved ones during the move. Consider having the sitter take your children or pets away from your home on moving day so they are nowhere near the hustle and bustle of the movers packing your belongings up and putting them on the moving truck.
While the upcoming move may feel like a daunting and ominous task, if you follow these tips and plan out your move as early and as thoroughly as possible, there is no reason to expect anything less than a successful experience.
*Please consult your personal financial advisor for more information on the local, state, and federal tax regulations as they apply to you.
