Have you ever noticed that life frequently serves, usually when we are least prepared, opportunities to make life-altering choices. Do I stay at this dead –end, but secure job, or take a chance with a new risky opportunity? Do I step out into a new relationship, or cling to the comfort of mom and dad's basement? Do I tenaciously adhere to speaking only truth, even if brutal, or do I take the easy road of a barely off-white but much more socially acceptable lie? Choices, big and small, seem to greet our every step. Often, there is no 'right' or 'wrong' response, but there certainly are a variety of consequences to consider.

Fortunately, our culture provides us with three exemplary icons that embody the very essence of our most popular choosing and acting styles. I call them the 'three great captains' of Western civilization: Captain Kirk, Captain Crunch, and Captain Kangaroo.

If you are prone to be a testosterone-based bull in the china shop, then you follow the way of Captain Kirk. Using this strategy you will employ significantly more 'leap-age' than you will 'look-age'. Crank up the adrenalin, and storm the Klingon stronghold armed with a drained phaser and a keen dramatic presence. The way of Kirk leaves logic (Spock) and emotional sensitivity (McCoy) back on the ship's control bridge ineffectively squabbling.

If you are more into less thinking and more wishing and hoping, then you are an adherent of the second great captain's philosophy of action—that of the good Captain Crunch. Champion of the cereal box, most of Crunch's battles were staged on the stormy skimmed milk seas of the cereal bowl. One step below the proverbial tempest in the teapot, Capt. Crunch bested bare footed pirates by hoping to violate the common laws of physics and milk absorption. The followers of the Crunchian Way don't spend much time thinking, rather they have faith that when push and shove finally meet, somehow, some transcendental way, things will just work out. Often you will find them repeating affirmations, praying, or having a second cocktail after lobbying the fates to be gentle with them.

Finally we consider the last of the great Captains of our culture: Captain Kangaroo. This Captain chose his actions by committee. Capt. Kangaroo always consulted his team of stalwart puppets and staff. Only after painstaking analysis by Mr.'s Moose and Greenjeans, Bunny Rabbit, Dancing Bear, and a host of others was Capt. Kangaroo ready to take action. Unfortunately, by then his show was over, and his opportunity missed.

Obviously, depending on the hyperbolic traits of any single one of our great captains, or any single habitual strategy for making choices, is liable to routinely leave us enjoying less than desirable consequences. Some situations might require the 'charge in phaser's blazing' approach of Kirk. Other situations may well benefit from the soggy thinking optimism of Crunch. Of course, the careful analytical approach of Kangaroo has its moments as well. Most situations would benefit from a nice variable combination of the three captain's choosing methods.

Before you make your next big, or little choice, you might stop for a moment and see if you have been happy with the results from previous similar choices. If you have, then by all means move forwards as usual. If you haven't always been pleased with the results of your choices, you might consider changing your choosing strategy. Sometimes that's as easy as simply making up your mind to change. Other times our choosing strategy is completely unconscious, and not easily changed. If you chronically find yourself at the wrong end of bad choices that you don't even remember making, then it's time to visit your local hypnotherapist. Hypnosis is the fastest way to unearth unconscious mechanisms, and free you from their grip. A qualified hypnotherapist can help you reprogram faulty decision habits and help you start moving in the direction you want to go. With all due respect to the three great captains, it is your life, and you deserve to sail through it smiling.

Cooling off in the shadow of doubt!

Can I? Will I be able too? What if I fail? You have the training, skills, and knowledge necessary to accomplish a task or conquer a challenge, but a doubt or a fear of failure keeps you from moving toward your desired outcome. Sound familiar? The Self-Help world is filled with advice and technologies to render every doubt into a certainty. I know of at least a dozen NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) and hypnotic techniques that are sure-fire recipes for eliminating doubt. Understandably, a life filled with certainty has an appeal, but let us not toss the 'doubt' baby out with its old bathwater. The skill of proper doubting is an extremely useful resource.

Of course entertaining a doubt might not be the perfect activity while firewalking or approaching a potential dance partner; a doubt is a very useful thought to have when considering one's perceived barriers and weaknesses. Like a procrastinator that never gets around to putting something off, a person that gets into the habit of doubting his doubts might just find doubt's silver lining.

Think of something you know, or truly believe to be true. A classic example would be "the sun is going to come up tomorrow". Most of us feel fairly certain about that idea. Notice how it feels, and even pretend to know where you feel that feeling. Is it inside, or outside of your body (remember, you're pretending), if there is an image associated with this certain thought is it bright or dark, close or far away, a still shot or a like a movie? Imagine you have a place somewhere inside or outside of your body you can call your 'position of certainty'. That position is where your strong beliefs and certainties exist. Play with that certainty until you're familiar with its experiential structure.

Next, do the same exercise with something you doubt. Make it an obvious doubt such as "I doubt I'll ever sprout wings and fly" or "I doubt I'll ever be president of MicroSoft". If you don't doubt either of those two suggestions, good luck, and pick your own. Notice how you doubt in terms of the same qualities that you observed with the thought you were certain about examined above. Imagine or pretend there is a 'position of doubt' somewhere around your body.

Now, think of a thought you are certain of, or believe firmly, that you would rather not be so sure of. Examples of this might include "I don't deserve success" or "I'm not good enough". Make it a problematic certainty that you wouldn't mind doubting. It probably shares many of the structural qualities with the strongly believed thought you examined above. Check and see.

Finally, imagine rapidly taking that last certain thought that you would like to doubt, and quickly changing it's qualities and location to resemble a doubt. If, for example, certainty is big and bright, and doubt is smaller and dark, take this thought that you'd like to doubt and quickly shrink and darken it, and snap it into the 'doubt' position. Do that a few times…. certainty to doubt…. certainty to doubt. Do this as fast as you can. Remember, your brain works much faster than you think. Now, take a deep breath, and re-examine that thought you'd like to doubt. You will probably notice it feels, well, more doubtful. Of course, you can also do the reverse, and change a doubt to a certainty. Never doubt the value of proper doubting. Your brain is a playground…so play.

If you see the value in this process, but just couldn't get the hang of it, I recommend contacting a local hypnotherapist or NLP practitioner to help you discover doubt's ability to free you from debilitating beliefs. Debilitating beliefs are often unconscious, and require the trained eyes and ears of a hypnotherapist to uncover.

How to Make Yourself, and Others, Feel Good With your Tongue!

We are blessed with a marvelous and mighty device that can, in moments, stir the best feelings, or the worst, in ourselves and in those around us. That device is, of course, our tongue. I am referring specifically to our tongue's capacity to produce sounds and words. In virtually any situation, any crowd of people, or any solitary moment, you are able to make massive changes in how you and anyone within earshot experience that moment simply by properly using your tongue. A few well-chosen words can kindle a flame of warm passion, or violent rage. Equally, the right words can subdue that rage or dampen that passion.

Recall how, as a child, you had dreams of 'growing up' to be a fireman, an astronaut, or a doctor. You may or may not have reached those lofty goals, but you have grown to become an artist capable of painting, with a few words, emotional masterpieces or disasters. Perhaps you don't think of your manners and methods of speaking in that way, but I'll bet you can recall saying something that made a friend feel very good. You probably also have no problem remembering causing hurt with your words. We all have had the experience of talking ourselves up with our internal voice, bolstering courage and confidence. Unfortunately we can probably equally easily recall using that voice to, with a slightly different tone, berate and 'beat ourselves up'.

In invite you to consider playing a game with your speech patterns. Pick a period of time, maybe 10 minutes, maybe 10 days, maybe the rest of your life, and during that period of time commit yourself to only using words that produce good feelings. Pretend that you are a word gun (you truly are), and resolutely insist on only shooting happy words at yourself and others for the duration of the game. Resist any urge to do damage with your words, regardless of how angry you might become, or how much you feel the listener deserves to suffer at the hands of your tongue. No matter how badly you screw something up, during the duration of the game, only use pleasant words on yourself. If you slip up, forgive yourself, and start over. Once you really start paying attention to how impactful on the feelings of yourself and others your words can be, you will gain a new appreciation for the power of your words.

As a clinical hypnotist, I am paid to make people feel better by using nothing but words. I assure you that you have the same capacity. With practice, words can be used to melt phobias, dissolve long-standing destructive habits, and most importantly, just make people feel good. Start a collection of words that make you feel good. Experiment, and see if they can make others feel good as well. Additionally, pay attention to the tone and energy of the words, and how they make you feel. Notice how words uttered from a smiling mouth almost always sound, and feel happier. Make it your goal to perfect the ability to create joy and wonder with a few simple linguistic movements of your tongue. Then go out in your world and target practice. Find yourself rampantly creating good feelings just by the words you use. See if you don't agree with me that creating good feelings with words is one of the best uses of your tongue.

Imagine your life is like a road trip. You've packed, you have your bottled water and snacks handy, you've consulted the map and, after much deliberation, you've picked your desired destination. You turn up the radio, and off you go. Minute, hours, days, and years go by. Soon, you've gone through all of your snacks and most of your water. You've spent a king's ransom on gas and car maintenance, collected an impressive collection of road scars—dings, dents, and flat tires—yet somehow the scenery looks the same. You keep consulting the now dog-eared map, but it isn't matching the territory your driving through. Everything just looks so familiar.

    Hmmm.

Let me make a suggestion. Look at your hands as you are driving, and make sure that you are not confusing the rear-view mirror for the steering wheel. The practice is not as uncommon as it seems. Ask yourself, how many times have you found yourself in the same situation over and over? How many times have you found yourself dating, or even marrying the same kind of person, with the same annoying idiosyncrasies? How many times have you found yourself making the same choices, the same mistakes, and the same parade of life experiences? If you are steering based solely on your past, navigating using only the rear-view mirror, how can you expect to get anywhere different? Let us add to the saying "those who ignore the past are bound to repeat it" the additional clause "along with those who are stuck in the past!"

Realizing that things aren't changing and that your goals aren't getting any closer is a good indication that you might want to change your grip from the rear-view mirror to the steering wheel. One way to accomplish this is to become aware of the fact that we always consider the familiar more comfortable than the unfamiliar, even if it's a familiar 'bad thing'. You need only look at the person that keeps continually returning to an abusive relationship, because, painful and dangerous as that relationship is, it is better than the 'unknown' of a new relationship or no relationship at all. So often, in order to avoid the potential discomfort of the unknown new experience, we will forego opportunities to experience new successes, new pleasures, and new chances for fun. Our incredible minds can navigate a course virtually anywhere, but only if we are willing, from time to time, to leave the comfortable familiar behind. Sometimes, simply the awareness of how we have been constrained by the past is enough to goose us into looking forward. Often, however, we are as unwilling, or unable to free ourselves from the restrictions of past behavior patterns as the mighty full--grown elephant is unwilling to challenge that puny stake and chain that bound him so well when he was a baby elephant. We are afraid of what might happen if we release our grip on the mirror. In those cases, an outside observer and coach is required to point out, and free us, from those invisible, often unconscious, restrictions from the past. Hypnosis is the quickest, and most effective means to expose and break those chains—to pry your hands from the mirror and place them on the wheel. An effective hypnotist can help you learn from the past, but not be stuck in the past.

Rumor has it that there is a whole new playground outside the windshield, new adventures, new challenges; new opportunities for success, and failure. Start looking out the windows rather than restricting yourself to the view in the mirror. The windows are bigger, easier, and much more exciting to look through once you simply redirect your attention.

What if you could always see the world through the eyes of someone in love?

It is amazing how good we are at using our awesome brains to make ourselves feel bad! Ruminating over an embarrassing moment a week ago; beating ourselves up because we meant to say one thing, but actually said another; or just spending time worrying about the future are all extraordinarily poor uses of our magical thinking and feeling abilities.

What if, instead, we focused on answering the question "how good can I feel?" You might be surprised to learn that our brains are just as adept at helping us feel good as they are at allowing us to feel crummy. And, feeling good is significantly more fun.

How good would you like to feel? That's the question I always ask my clients. Assuming 'more' good is better, let's take a look at an easy way to litter your world with more good feelings.

Intentionally frown, and remember a recent time when you were upset (if you can't recall a recent time you were upset you sure don't need to be reading these self-help articles). Take a couple of deep breaths low in your body (your belly) as you recall being upset. Remember to frown. Now look around you, and just notice what catches your attention. Notice what sounds you hear, how intense the colors around you are, and whether or not your environment somehow reflects your upset feeling.

Now let that feeling go. Literally shake your hands to shake out the upset feeling, stand up and move around just a bit. Make sure the upset feeling has gone.

Now intentionally smile, recall a recent time when you were feeling happy. Take a couple of deep breath higher in your body (upper chest) and relive that good feeling. Once you're in the 'happy flow' take a look around and notice if your surrounding don't somehow look different than they did when you playing 'upset' feelings. Most people find their environment reflects whatever emotional state they are entertaining. When we are upset, the world seems to mirror our unsettledness. Likewise, your happy feeling is likely greeted by a world of brighter, happier colors, cheerier voices, and more pleasant sensations all around.

Now recall the last time you were really in love. You know, the feeling that has you skipping instead of walking down the street. That magical glow of being in love that always has a smile on your lips. This phenomenon of feeling heroically good when you are in love is so ubiquitous that it is perhaps the cliché of our culture. Countless love songs, poems, and TV commercials make reference to those glorious feelings of being in love.

It doesn't really matter whether you've got someone handy to be in love with right now or not, you can certainly still entertain all of those wonderful love produced feelings. Or, if you've, as the song laments "lost that loving feeling", I can show you how to easily get that joy back. Make sure you only recall the glorious fun stuff, just in case the relationship later took a turn for the worst. It's a rare relationship that doesn't start wonderfully. Those moments of joy are yours to recall and enjoy regardless of what else may have crept in to spoil paradise.

So you are recalling that incredible feeling of being in love. Initially, maybe all you can bring up is a distant memory of being in love, but it is there. Even if you don't recall, or have never had that profound loving experience, you've seen enough people in love around you, or in movies and on TV to be able to pretend. Your brain does not distinguish well between actual recalled events and those fictional events vividly imagined. Here's your chance to enjoy that great love you never had.

So now, remember, or pretend to remember those glorious feelings of being in love. Perhaps you can remember your beloved's face, or voice, or touch. Perhaps instead you'll start by recalling a place, or a song that reminds you of the feelings. It may come a bit slow at first, but as you think about the sensory details of a time you were in love you will discover two things. First, the more you think about it, the more details will come back to you or be supplied by your imagination. The second fact you will discover is that such happy fantasizing is much more enjoyable than worrying ever was.

In your imagination, pursue those details, re-deploy your finely honed 'worry' circuits to instead ruminate and flesh in the details of those love filled moments. They don't have to be real, and they don't have to sentimental, but they must be happy thoughts and feelings—the happier, the better.

Make this process of recollection of love drenched experiences a hobby. It is more entertaining than stamp collecting. Soon, as you immerse yourself in this enjoyable exercise, you will find the memories easier to find, and the associated good feelings more naturally flowing into your body. The better you were at worrying, the better you will be at this fun reminiscence. Whenever you experience a real choice 'zinger' of a good feeling, form your left hand into a fist and gently squeeze it. When you recall a warm or pleasant thought that makes you giggle, or blush, squeeze that fist. Make it your goal to come up with pleasant thoughts worthy of a fist squeeze.

For the next week, take every opportunity you can to recall that loving feeling, continuing to squeeze your fist whenever you entertain a 'good one.' If you continually practice squeezing your fist when thinking loving thoughts and feeling loving feelings you will discover something else. What you will discover is that soon simply squeezing your fist will produce those associated loving feelings. That is what is called, in NLP, an "anchor". When you fire that anchor (squeeze the fist) you will find those feelings coming on delightfully, and automatically.

Imagine this, your husband or wife of twenty years walks through your door, as you look at them you smile and squeeze your fist, and you see them through the eyes of the infatuation that you experienced when you first met and fell in love. Once you have created the fist squeeze love anchor, squeeze every time you see your current love. Soon they will also serve as an anchor for those loving feelings. Repeatedly falling in love with the same person is kind of fun.

Now for the big question: Are these created or recalled feelings of love real? Or are they just a contrived illusion? As if the bad feelings you get from your regular practice of worrying aren't contrived illusions. I suggest it doesn't matter. If you are going to think thoughts and create feelings anyway, why not make thoughts and feelings that feel good?

You've just bought a new car. It's the latest model; it has the whiz-bang features that will definitely single you out from the merely mortal driving rank and file. You know you paid a bit (maybe a lot) too much, but with this car you make a unique and powerful statement to all others on the road. This car is as different from the herd as you are! Yet, as you drive this rare sparkling beauty home from the lot you suddenly notice the roadways dotted with several other nearly identical cars. Hmmm…never noticed those before. Somewhat deflated, it slowly dawns on you that your chromium highlighted beauty came from an assembly line, and it obviously wasn't the only one of it's species turned out that day. You 'uniqueness' becomes similar to dozens of other drivers.

This is an occurrence so common it has a name: "seeing the same car syndrome." How is it that our subjective experience of the world can change so sharply with a simple purchase? We can either assume there is a profound metaphysical change, and the infinite cosmic auto-assembly plant suddenly seeded our roads with more of your cherished previously 'unique' vehicle; or, that somehow the act of buying and valuing this four-wheeled beauty has changed your perceptual apparatus. I am going to argue for the latter, and show you how to use that phenomenon.

Our experience of the world is made up of a magical concoction of sensory experience, memory, and imagination. Research has shown that our visual experience of our world at any given moment is made up of approximately 30 percent actual sensory data, and 70 percent of memory and imagination. Most of what we see isn't technically what's there, but what we think ought to be there. That last bit makes way for some delightful mischief. Obviously, sight isn't the only sense involved, and there is a corroborative networking of sight and sound (the two distance senses). Vision, however, is usually the more distinct and detailed sense, and will tend to drive the auditory sense. If you doubt this, and are old enough, recall drive-in theaters. We would put a cheesy speaker in one window, and watch a screen usually at least half a football field away. Within a few minutes, we would forget the actual screen/speaker placement, and hallucinate the sounds emanating from the screen.

So, according to this argument, those cars were always there, they were just existing in that 70% of your visual world with which you have artistic license.

As a stage hypnotist, I can suggest a volunteer visually hallucinate the crowd as naked. I am not asking the client to violate his actual optical experience; I am merely playing with the 70% majority part of his visual experience that he is 'making up' anyway.

More usefully, I can suggest to a person with a fear of public speaking, that the crowd she sees are smiling, supporting her, and wishing her well. I am only suggesting changes in the part of her experience that she is mentally constructing. 30% of the crowd she really sees may be responding however they do—good, bad, or indifferent. I'm just asking her to focus on the friendly bunch that she has created. They are smiling, and so is she.

How about if you make up your mind to see opportunity. Make your waking thoughts the instruction "The world is full of opportunity, and I am going to see it today!" You'll begin to have an effect on the 70% of the world that you have an automatic say about. If you can see lots of people driving your car, you might be able to see lots of people offering you new opportunities. At least it is worth a try.

Smile right now! Regardless of what is going on in your life I want you to smile. Smile big. Smile goofy. Smile a smile that spreads from your lips to your entire face and eyes, even your neck, shoulders, and scalp. Just smile!

Let me talk to you about choices for a moment. Each moment we have a choice about how we feel. Most often, we are caught up in the events of the moment, and forget we have that choice. Whenever we remember, however, we can shift gears with a simple physical action: a smile.

Our emotional state at any given moment is a result of our brain's chemistry. If you'll forgive the term, a "heady" combination of hormones and neural chemicals result in the particular 'flavor' of our brain soup. Our brain spices are different when angry than when sad, or ecstatic. Based on this idea that each emotion creates, or results (causation is not an issue in this article) in a particular chemical balance in our brains, it is pretty obvious that we can not entertain two opposing emotions at the same time. Just as your stove top chowder can't be 'too salty' and 'not salty enough' at the same time, so your brain can't be chemically spiced as 'sad' and 'happy' at the same time.

So…in those moments of lucidity when you become aware of who controls your brain's spice cabinet, here is what I suggest—always season your brain, and your day, with a smile.

Let me suggest an experiment you can do right now. Just as you are sitting there now and reading this: Recall a less than glorious experience. As you recall this experience, notice how your brain and body begin to feel correspondingly poorly. Don't let yourself feel too bad. Feel just bad enough to notice a change in your brain soup.

As soon as you notice a poor feeling, smile. Stop smiling. Smile bigger. Stop smiling. Smile even bigger. Stop smiling. Smile your biggest goofiest smile. Now, try to stop smiling. Hard to stop smiling, isn't it?

Smiles seem to be one of those physical postures or actions that are 'hard-wired' to a particular emotional state. You simply can not feel sad while smiling. Try it.

Smiling is only one easy physical gesture that is hard-wired to an emotional state. Frowns are as well, but why fiddle around with negative states? Instead, let us consider some other posture or activities that are naturally connected to positive, or enjoyable emotional states.

Here is a good one…try feeling depressed while standing up straight. Hold your head high, breath high into your chest, and try to feel depressed or sad. Most people can not do it. Knowledge of such postural effects on emotions is deeply engrained into our language. Think of such phrases as "Hold your head high" or "chin up" as encouraging phrases offered to suffering friends.

Many people can't feel bad when simply looking up with their eyes. Try it. Try to recall a sad or depressing thought while aiming your eyes high.

Use your body to flavor your 'brain soup'. You'll like the positive flavor.

It is "O" dark thirty (actually about 5am). Out of habit my conscious mind snaps to attention. My very first complete conscious thought is to repeat the word "Incredible!" Suddenly I feel a surge of energy, a smile growing on my lips, and regardless of what the day might hold, I bounce out of bed ready to meet the day's challenges head on.

The power of one word "incredible!' is indelibly etched across the face of my day. It's better than coffee. The power that simple words have over our emotional and physical subjective state is simply astounding.

I am a hypnotherapist with way too many years under my belt to admit to, but I am still blown away every morning by the impact a word can have on my day.

I invite you to perform a simple experiment. I assume you are sitting in a chair as you read these words. Take a moment, and rank how you feel on the fun scale of 1 to 10-- '1' being 'blah' and '10' being 'ecstatic'.

Now for the experiment: Say the word "yuck!" three times. Say it with meaning and whatever enthusiasm you can muster. Now, notice how you feel on that scale of 1 to 10. My money says that you've dropped at least a notch or two (unless you started at 1) on that scale. Ask yourself, how often do you "yuck" on your day?

Now, say the word 'incredible!' three times. Exaggerate the expression and feelings as you say it. Notice what it does to your feelings on that scale. If, as I predict, you've advanced upward on that 1 to 10 scale, smile and congratulate yourself. Go ahead and repeat the word 'incredible!" a few more times and see how far up the scale you can advance.

Consider how you talk to yourself, and what words you predominantly use. "Self-talk" has been a self-help buzzword for a couple of decades, but you can show yourself in a very few minutes exactly how important and powerful language is. I'm not talking about the effect of 'affirmations' to change the universe, just the impact of a few well chosen words to change your subjective experience of the world.

Think of other situations, and what experiences your words can aim you towards. Try "powerful", "sexy", "gggrrr-eat! (of Tony the Tiger fame) and see how you respond. Once you become aware of how important such words are in your day-to-day experience, you'll find yourself scripting your new vocabulary for a designer day.

I suggest you make that day "incredible!"

'Welcome to my morning, welcome to my day.

Yes, I'm the one responsible, I made it just this way.'

    (Farewell Andromeda, John Denver)

The alarm clock goes off, and a deep sleep unceremoniously crashes into another morning. Bleary eyed, after a speedy debate over 5 to ten more minutes of blessed 'snooze alarm time' you drag yourself to wakefulness. Gracelessly you stumble to the toilet, the coffee maker, and (shudder) perhaps that first cigarette as you reluctantly storm the gates of this new day. In a pattern set in stone since soon after puberty, we drag ourselves into the morning with a mumbled curse, our brain seemingly over-wrinkled like a well slept in suit.

    Or……

Your first waking thought is 'Incredible! It's morning!" You bound out of bed like a well lubricated gazelle. Your eyes are wide and excited. Thrilled to greet the morning!

What makes that difference? Is one an anomaly, and the other the norm? If so, which is which?

If you have the choice, which one would you choose? Or is there a happy medium between ecstasy and ennui that would be more to your liking?

Exploring the difference between these two morning states is an endeavor well worth the time, and unusual requirements of belief suspension and perspective shifting, required. Here are a couple of simple tips to get you started.

First, pretend like you get to choose your morning tone just like yo get to set your phone's ring tone. Imagine you get to write the script for your first waking thought. Would you choose "Oh bother, it's morning again!" or " Wow! It's morning—let's Go!" As you consider, I ask that you actually imagine a voice behind you saying those two lines. Do it now.

Which of the two feels better? Or, if you don't care for my words write your own script for a glorious first thought. As you get ready to fall asleep each evening, remind yourself of what your new and improved first thought is going to be. Practice it a few times before you drop off to sleep. When you awaken, get into the habit of mentally repeating that script, even if, for the first few mornings, it isn't technically your first thought. A trick I used initially to remind myself was to set a sock on top of my alarm clock just before I went to sleep. Having to fight through the sock to hit the 'snooze' button in the morning eventually, after a few confused responses, reminded me to repeat my new morning script. Soon the new script becomes automatic, and a self-fulfilling prophecy for your day.

Secondly, if you are going to rewrite your morning script, why not set it to music. Imagine swaggering into your morning shower to the James Bond theme song. Think of what music would serve as the best sound track for your new script. If you have an alarm clock that can wake you to music, set it up to wake you to this song (my favorite is "Fanfare for the Common Man" performed by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer). If you don't have that sophisticated of an alarm clock, simply pick your tune and mentally hum a few bars before you go to sleep, and make the determination that you will repeat that tune upon first awakening. As you remember your early morning script, you will also easily recall the rousing tune. Mentally hum or whistle the tune, or even do so out loud…a rousing background to your new morning. Both music and script will aim those first few minutes of your morning in a direct line toward a glorious day.

With a bit of practice you'll start each day with a rousing script and soundtrack that will start your day with verve and excitement. Where you go from there is up to you!

    Why see a hypnotist?

Why does change, at times, seem so difficult? Why can't we just make up our minds to change patterns of behaviors, thoughts, and emotions and have it happen that quickly? The 'Holy Grail' of change work, whether it be self-help, or through utilizing a coach or therapist, is the instant 'quick fix' change can rectify years of habitual behavior patterns in a few short moments. Oh, and while we're at it let's make those moments comfortable and relaxing.

Let us look for a moment at a possible reason why change doesn't always occur that easily (in fact rarely) and why hypnosis might be a possible candidate for that Grail.

Your entire magnificent body/mind system sails through life performing an astronomical number of simultaneous tasks. Barring emergencies, your heart never stops beating, your lungs never stop operating, you metabolize the food you eat, and maintain a body temperature of 98.6 regardless of your environment. And, that is just a tip of the physiological iceberg of ongoing vital functions. Yet you only become aware of these processes if there is a problem. Otherwise they thankfully require no attention. These processes are part of your vast 'unconscious'.

Included in this ever ongoing party of physiological processes beneath your awareness, or consciousness, are all of your brain's functions, including language, proprioception (sense of your body and it's position), emotional responses, etc., etc. There is, of course, no clear dividing line between physical and mental processes, and we are blissfully unaware of the overwhelmingly vast majority of them.

Now, specifically regarding behaviors. Most of our behaviors seem to be picked up unconsciously from our environment. Perhaps we are born with the tendency toward some behaviors, the jury is still out on that regard, but whether nature or nurture, the acquisition of behavior is predominantly unconscious. How many times, as we mature, do we marvel at how much our behaviors (particularly speech patterns) resemble our parent's patterns, often in spite of our best efforts. These are behaviors we unconsciously picked up from our environment as we developed.

What then, is our conscious mind, and what is it's scope? What's left?

Research has repeatedly shown that we can generally only be aware of, or conscious of, seven plus or minus two pieces of information at any one time. As glorious as our conscious mind is, it is so severely limited in the volume of information it can handle, that, in most cases, it is unable to have much of an effect on our overall behavior. Our conscious mind can manage momentary adjustments of behavior at best. In fact, I suggest that the main purpose of the conscious mind is to handle the necessary small bits of information we receive just until we can process them into our much more able 'unconscious mind'.

In fact, think about how we learn new things. Take riding a bike, for example. At first, when we climb on that wobbly two wheeled device, we have more things to attend to than we could possibly consciously handle—balance, speed, avoiding oncoming obstacles, and so on. We end up falling down a lot. However, we keep at it, and one day, success! We can climb on the bike and ride, virtually without a conscious thought about balance, speed, avoiding obstacles, and all of those other innumerable matters connected with bike riding. We say we've learned to ride a bike. What we mean is, riding a bike is now an unconscious behavior, and our conscious mind is free to think of other things while we ride.

Once we learn something, once it becomes accepted as an unconscious behavior, it usually stays with us for life. That's a wonderful thing for habits like bike riding and learning to read. It sometimes becomes a bit of a problem when we have learned behaviors like smoking or phobic responses. It seems as though, once a behavior is learned, we unconsciously assign a value to it (we did, after all, work hard to learn to smoke for whatever reason we had at the time). To later try to change that learned habit challenges those initial reasons and values, and seems to violate the integrity of the unconscious. Trying to consciously change a habit, like smoking, is like trying to swim upstream against an overwhelming current. With smoking, in my experience, the habit is much more difficult to break than the chemical addiction.

    Hypnosis to the rescue.

There is one method of interpersonal communication that does allow access to the normally unavailable unconscious processes, and that method is hypnosis. Hypnosis simply creates a doorway to the unconscious part of our mind. A qualified hypnotist can establish communication with the part of your unconscious mind that maintains the habitual behavior you want to change. Sometimes through simple suggestion (new information) and sometimes through a more complex conversation with that unconscious part of your mind/body that controls the problematic habit, a hypnotist can literally change the course of that mighty unconscious river. Once that occurs, change results as easily as floating downstream on a sun-drenched inner tube.

Hypnosis is that "Holy Grail" of personal change.

So you may be looking into all of the work at home ideas available to you today that you could end up confused trying to figure out the best one for you. Well when looking through the long line of possibilities there are some questions you can ask yourself to help make the choice easier.

Ever since most of the work at home ideas involve multi-level marketing, if you are not the type of person that wants to sell merchandise to your family and friends, then this is not the opportunity for you. One of the ways people make money with multi-level marketing is to sell products, but the major way to make money is to employ others to sell the products for you. Therefore the name multi-level marketing as there is multiple levels of distributors, each earning a percentage of the sales of everyone working under them.

The person at the top will be making the most money. While there are opportunities in this type of business in which you can make money with your own internet business without having to sell to friends and family, some companies offer a commerce website that for a small franchise fee. You can propose a professional looking and functioning online retail store and make money off every sale made from your store.

Additional expenditure may be necessary for marketing to get people into your store, but that is similar to advertising for a brick and mortar store and a part of doing business. You may be able to increase your payout if you employ others to also open stores, but it is not essential in order to make money.

Becoming an affiliate marketer can also provide income. You merely join with other companies and place ads for them on your website. When your visitors click on their ad and buy something, you get a percentage of the sale. Once more, promoting your website will bring in more visitors and more potential sales through your affiliates.

Working at home ideas also comprise order processing, where you will receive email or snail mail orders for merchandises, enter the information into your home computer and transmit it to a main company, which then processes the orders and sends out the products. These a legitimate opportunities for the right companies, but may involve a small fee to get started.

One of the newer work at home ideas is for people to fill out forms online. A possible customer may email information to a box you are in charge of monitoring and when information is put forward you enter it on a company's form and send it to the company. It is easy enough work but it will take a lot of forms to make any money doing this.

You have most likely used up a lot of time thinking of ways you can earn money from home while the baby is growing up, or the spouse is recuperating or you lately lost your job. The decision to stay at home can be a tough one and it will take time to determine the best and consistent means to earn money from home before you completely commit to the idea.

In lots of areas of the country it is a rigid job market and with specific, in-demand skills a lot of workers are finding themselves with few prospects. This frequently sparks the decision to try to earn money from home and, sadly, also can lead to making hopeless decisions that might not permit you to make the most of your circumstance. Several companies prey on frantic job hunters and take their money when they do not have the cash to give up.

Looking for the right opportunity takes time and effort and a readiness not to let that voice of reason get lost in the gossip of lofty promises. Settling to start your own business at home is a choice that not only affects you it affects your family as well as your bill collectors. If you do not make money, they will not care that you had to pay extra for extra training and might not be long before you do not have electric to keep the computer up and running.

Look dispassionately at your skills or talents and before you send money to join a million dollars a month opportunity that requires no education or specialized training, ask yourself what you will be doing to earn that kind of cash and who is prepared to pay it. The two answers are usually not anything and no one should tell you where your cash is going. One of the most profitable means of making money online is scamming others into sending you cash and when the voice of reason is silenced, the scammer's voice is often heard loud and clear.

Assembling products at home can be a good way to make money as long as you are connected with a legitimate company. Those making the offer requiring you buy specialized tools and parts in order to assemble the product are only selling the tools and the parts. There is a 100 percent possibility that no matter how well your products are assembled the company will reject them for quality reasons, typically not being up to their standards.

There are, however many companies who will pay a third party to complete assembly work for them offsite, and depending on the product they may even want to scrutinize your facilities to insure they are not wasting their time with someone who can produce a few a week when they may need thousands.

Lots of persons who are searching for ways to earn extra money know it is not going to fall into their lap. There are countless honest methods of earning extra cash and if working outside the house part time is not an option for you, look to the internet for new methods.

Every person has heard about the big money to be made through online auctions and some people really earn a living simply selling merchandise at auction. Lots more, however, can pick up a few extra dollars here and there, but if you want to make the big bucks, you will be doing this on a near full-time basis. Getting linked with a business that supplies the products for you to list on your auction site, and then handle the billing and shipping can create a lot of profit if you pick the right items to sell.

If you do not locate the right products and your listings do not sell, you will go broke paying listing fees for goods still sitting in the company s storehouse. Before you get started in a full time auction business, become fully educated on the type of merchandise in demand and remember it will change with the seasons and at the whim of the customers. What sells well today may languish in a warehouse tomorrow.

Affiliate marketing is about the easiest way to make additional money nowadays. The only work necessary on your part is placing another company s ad on your site. When visitors to your site click on the advertisement, it automatically tracks the referral and when they make a purchase you earn a commission. If you do not have a website, these ads can be placed on your web log, known as a blog, and if the ads relate to the subject of your blog, you can earn even more money.

Selling online can also bring in an extra income, but for this you will need a website or at least get connected to an existing website that will let you post your goods for sale. There are some craft or antique malls that rent booth and floor space in which you can display your merchandise. The mall will handle all the marketing for the entire building without focusing on one occupant, ad in addition to the monthly space rental will also charge a percentage of the total sales.

Perchance website can be built that will also showcase all the vendors of crafts or antiques and allow online sales. If you allow vendors to place their ads for a set amount, you can eliminate the need for collecting a percentage and just maintain the site for them. You and they both can collect additional income from this type of venture.

Despite what the advertisements may guarantee, discovering a free work at home system may be next to impracticable in numerous lines of work. Whereas lots of businesses advertise free work from home opportunities, their description of free may not be the identical as yours.

Many of the free work at home opportunities are nothing more than franchise opportunities, in which you put your name on their page and promote it. In many ways, this makes sense. The business has spent lots of cash and lots of time developing their web site, along with the replication software enabling you to have the same website with your name on it. They have also spent a lot of time and money developing the service or product mix for sale on that site.

Similar to any traditional franchise, a new entry in the field can take advantage of the name recognition, products and reputation of the existing company. The existing business is selling the exclusive use of their name and products, in hopes that more customers will be the result.

The main trouble with internet businesses is that clientele come from all over the world and if there are 1,000 people with 1,000 websites that all look exactly the same, getting people to visit your site so that you get credit for sale is where cost may enter the equation. Sure, you can set up a free blog site and talk about nothing but the products on your site, using your unique URL to draw people in. You may actually get one or two people reading your blog. Maybe they will visit the site. This is free.

If you ask any individual who has achieved the smallest amount of success in business, internet or traditional, they will tell you that advertising or marketing is required to get people to your website or into your business. Without it, the only people who will know about your online business are you and your service provider, and they won t care as long as you pay your fees.

In order to improve your page s ranking, you may have to spend some quality time and money to make your site more eye-catching to internet search engines. In business, time is money, so your free work at home opportunity is getting more expensive as you go along.

Furthermore, lots of the companies offering free websites, amazingly also can suggest a marketing company to help you get your site noticed. That will not be free, but the returns from increased sales may pay for the advertising. Of course, the company, whose free website you promote, is going to be an affiliate of the marketing company and will receive a percentage of your outlay for the advertising. While there may not be anything illegal or even unethical about these preparations, you should be conscious of what you are getting into before you spend the first dime.

In today s market environment prices are escalating across the board and as the majority of incomes are failing to increase at an even pace, lots of people are looking for extra income ideas and there are a few ways to improve the cash flow into your house. If you put some thinking into your hobbies and activities you enjoy you can surely find some way to turn a hobby into a part time income.

For instance, a person who likes to build things such as small pieces of furnishings or doghouses or squirrel feeders can take them to one of many craft shops who take consignments for sale. They will usually gather at least 10 percent of the selling price as their fee and some will offer rental space for you to display your work for sale. Rental of your booth plus the percentage you pay is generally covered by sales of your products, but they handle everything, together with paying your state s sales tax, is appropriate.

An individual who likes to sew and is good at it may be able to bring in extra income by offering repair service for clothing or alterations. A lot of dry cleaning companies subcontract alterations to tailors who work out of their home and by contacting them in your area could bring in some part time business. There may also be a market in specialty window treatments. If people have difficulty finding the right fit for curtains they may be interested in your services to create a special look just for them.

There are places online that offer reminder services for upcoming events and important days such as a spouse s birthday or anniversary. These flourish due to the hectic schedules of many people who do not remember a day until the morning of the event. You could offer to send people an email a day or so ahead of time as a reminder of a special event approaching. The majority people would be grateful for getting a gentle reminder in their email box to make sure the day is not forgotten.

Many small companies will send out special promotion pieces throughout the year and often have their own staff involved in addressing the pieces to their customers as well as stamping them and taking them to the post office. A service can be created that will maintain their mailing list the computer, which can be printed out on labels, or directly onto the cards, to reduce the time spent addressing them. While most projects would be small, your income from this type business from one source would be small, but if you can contract with numerous businesses you may be able to realize a decent part time income.

Consider your talents and consider your resources and decide on the type of part time business you could work from your home in order for you to earn extra income.

Congratulations! You have been asked to join a nonprofit Board of Trustees. That is certainly an honor, but it comes with many caveats and responsibilities you should know before you accept. You should know that beyond the demands on your time, there may also be demands on your financial resources far beyond your capacity to anticipate them. This article will give you a thorough checklist of the things you need to analyze.

    1. What is the culture of the Board? Is it an active Board that challenges the Executive Director on recommendations and points of policy, or is it a passive Board that takes its marching orders from the Executive Director. Ask to see minutes of past meetings, and if you see that each motion was passed unanimously, you can conclude that the Board all plays to the same drummer. On the other hand, if the minutes reflect spirited debate, and a split vote, they you can assume you are being asked to join a Board that takes the lead in setting directions.

    2. Who is on the Board? Is there anybody you know well enough to discuss your prospective appointment? Are there people on the Board you do not like? How do you see your personality engaging with the Executive Director's? Is the Executive Director a member of the Board (not recommended)? Is there a rapid turnover on the Board with former members not serving their full terms? Do you perceive the Board as composed of people who were selected for their talents, or because of the financial contributions they give?

    3. Does the nonprofit have a lot of money? While this may be an asset to the nonprofit, it can be a substantial liability to you personally. When you go on a nonprofit Board, you assume "fiduciary responsibility." That means that if something goes terribly wrong, and the consequences involve substantial losses for the nonprofit, you can be held personally liable, along with your other Board members, up to their ability to pay. That means, for example, that if there is a loss of money due to neglect or malfeasance, you and your colleagues on the Board can be ordered to make it right.

    4. Additionally, this doctrine of fiduciary responsibility extends into the management of any endowment or retirement assets that the Board manages. Be sure the Board has an "Investment Committee" composed of highly qualified financial professionals (they do not have to be members of the Board) who meet regularly to review the performance of the funds in their care.

    5. Be sure that any funds are being managed professionally by people chosen by your Investment Committee. In their contracts, it should be clearly stated that they assume fiduciary responsibility for the preservation and growth of those funds. More about the functions of this Committee in a future article.

    6. Insist on a full orientation. Meet members of the staff. Talk with other Board members. Tour the facilities. Examine the financials. Most important, be perfectly clear about what is expected of you as a member of the Board.

    7. If you do not have the time, or you know you will not be able to attend the Board meetings regularly, or participate in whatever committees you join, do not accept the appointment to the Board. It deprives the nonprofit of your talents, and greatly exposes you to any liability that may arise as a consequence of the Board not exercising oversight.

If you can satisfy yourself that the costs and liability are not too great for you to assume, join the Board and enjoy doing an important act of selfless commitment.

You would not be working at a nonprofit if there was not a passion for your mission that compensated for the sacrifices in salary and other benefits you could probably earn in the commercial world. That says something about the kind of people we are. Most of us are:

    * Trusting. We cannot imagine that there might be bad people in our idealized world;

    * Optimistic. How could we survive if we did not believe we really could make a difference?

    * Sympathetic. We are mostly attracted to needy causes or people;

    * Non-confrontational. We mostly like consensus and seek agreement.

    * Collaborative. Our comfort level is with working as a team rather than going it alone.

These are admirable and useful qualities to have in the nonprofit world. However, there are other people in your industry who do not fit this description. They operate more like they were in competition with everyone. Instead of trusting, they are wary. Instead of being optimistic, they are fearful of failure. Instead of being sympathetic, they are self-promoting. Instead of being non-confrontational, they fiercely stake out and defend their turf. Instead of being collaborative, they prefer to work alone isolated from their colleagues.

These people see their nonprofits being in competition with every other nonprofit – and they are absolutely right. However, the qualities they bring to the contest can often be disruptive and ugly. If you do not acknowledge this, you will lose donor dollars, volunteer commitments, membership, and patronage.

This article will describe the competitive environment in which nonprofits uncharacteristically find themselves. A subsequent article will deal with the strategies you need to consider in order to meet this challenge.

Where is the competition? It is coming at you from all directions:

    * Geographic – Look at the other nonprofits in your town. Are some of you competing for the same resources? The problem is that if a donor decides, for example, to set up a charitable trust in favor of the hospital, it is unlikely they will consider a similar commitment to you. If the local library sponsors a town fair for their benefit, it means that you should not expect great success duplicating the experience. If a national charity prevails in a time of particular need, be it a tsunami or Katrina, people will channel their beneficence to them rather than you.

    * Category – If you are a museum, you are in competition with other museums. For example, if you are a local historical society, your constituency may reduce their aid to you if they spend a weekend in Washington, DC at the Smithsonian. You are also in competition for support from your County Museum, State Museum, etc.

    * Perception – As other nonprofits promote themselves in newspapers, magazines, newsletters, tv, and radio, you will find their name recognition increasing at your expense. Nonprofits need to recognize the importance of promoting their brand.

    * Economic – If other nonprofits can outspend you on technology, lure talent with higher salaries, extend their markets by advertising and public relations, and spend money on consultants, they are positioning themselves to enjoy the dividends of these investments.

There are some ways that you can beat the competition, and create a better environment for the entire nonprofit community. We deal with these in the article "21 Things You Must do to Stay Competitive in the 21st Century."

Every year is finding nonprofits with more challenging environments for funding their programs and operations. There is less support from Federal and State Governments as they reallocate resources to meet their own expanding needs. Grants from foundations are harder to qualify for, and more difficult to obtain. Yet expenditures keep going up. Programs are more costly to fund, and salaries need to be kept competitive with the commercial sector. There are things every nonprofit needs to do to stay viable. Nonprofits need to recognize that they are operating in a competitive environment. Every donor and every grant are being sought by other nonprofits. Here are seven things you can do to stand out from the crowd.

    1. Modernize your website. Make it a place that people come to for current information. Keep adding new features as your webmaster makes them available to you. Incorporate features like webmail, flash, search and other applications. Use your website as a conduit to accept donations online. Be sure to include an "About Us" section that does much more than list staff email addresses. Use pictures and biographies to make your web visitors feel they know that person on your staff.

    2. Sit down with your bank and find out what they can do for you to make your operations more efficient. Use tools such as "Billpay" and direct payroll services to streamline your financial functions. Integrate your online banking activities with your desktop accounting software.

    3. Start thinking as if you were a for profit. Many non-profits pass up easy revenue by focusing on the tax implications of having that revenue deemed unrelated business income. If that were to happen, the worst is that the IRS can tax that revenue, putting the nonprofit in the same tax position as a for-profit, and still leaving a "profit." Open a store that sells branded merchandise. Subscribe to online marketplaces that will return money to you when people shop online.

    4. Review the composition of your Board. Many Boards have members who are chosen not for their ability, but for their contributions to the Organization. Make contributors "Honorary" members with privileges to attend all meetings, but be sure your "Working" members are talented, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and available to attend meetings and serve on committees.

    5. Bring in two outside consultants. Have the first expert review your operations and make recommendations for improvement. If you are anticipating a capital campaign, bring in a second consultant to perform a feasibility study. The conclusions of that study will give you a good idea of the likelihood of success, as well as specific recommendations for steps you can initiate now to better qualify you for success.

    6. Major companies are always asking their customers for feedback. You should do the same. This is the most valuable marketing information you can compile. It will point out areas that need attention, as well as programs that are being well received and could be expanded.

    7. We are living in a media-driven society. Make sure that newspapers, magazines, TV, and radio are kept informed about the services you provide. Write press releases, invite interviews, and visit with editors.

This is a competitive world, but being a non-profit does not mean you are excluded from the consequences. Initiating some of these steps will help put you at the head of the pack.

Many nonprofit organizations contain term limits in their by-laws for members of their Boards of Trustees. Some of the Boards on which I have served have different provisions. One provided for three year terms, with no more than three consecutive terms before the member was required to take at least one year off the Board. Another provided for annual terms, with no more than five years on the Board. Another allowed a Board member to serve for no more than a total of three terms of two years each.

There are a number of good reasons for these provisions. They encourage new points of view, different mixes of ideas at the table, and expose the organization to more individuals within the community. However, there are also challenges that must be addressed when there are term limits, most having to do with the ongoing process of nominating qualified people to the Board. If nonprofits use the checklist below, they will make the job of replacing Board members more efficient and more beneficial to fulfilling the mission of the organization.

    1. Form a nominating committee. When there are too many people contributing to the selection, the process becomes encumbered. It is much more efficient to select three Board members to prepare a list of candidates to the entire Board for their selection.

    2. Look for talents that are missing on the Board. Think about selecting an attorney, or an accountant, for example, to be able to have their expertise as part of the Board decision-making process.

    3. Look for diversity. Every nonprofit Board must account for the makeup of its constituency, and provide adequate representation on the Board. Select on the basis of fulfilling gaps in gender, race, age, economic circumstances, and geographic location.

    4. Find people who are truly committed to the success of your organization. There are a lot of people who compile a list of their Board positions as if they were applying for a job. Make sure your candidate has a proven record in supporting the purpose of your nonprofit.

    5. You must decide on whether you want to have a "rubber stamp" Board, or one that thrives on acrimony. There are places for both, and one is not necessarily preferable over the other. It is a matter of evaluating the strength of your Executive Director, and deciding whether you want to provide support for their policies, or give them the benefit of contending with alternate points of view.

    6. There are some good arguments for selecting people who will likely become or are significant financial contributors to the organization. However, selection on the basis of honoring their support is no substitute for evaluating their potential contributions to the decision-making process.

    7. There should always be an "A" list and a "B" list. The "B" list should be arranged in order of preference. It is used to provide alternates in case any of the invitations to the "A" list are not accepted.

    8. Institute an orientation program for new Board trustees. It is a daunting task for someone to acclimate themselves to the culture of your Board, and giving them the opportunity to become familiar with your history, your facilities, your staff, and your current issues, will be very beneficial for them and make them productive in shorter time.

    9. When inviting a person to come on your Board, be very clear that yours, like most nonprofits, consider fundraising an essential function of each Board member.

If you adhere to these nine points, you will fulfill your nonprofit fiduciary obligations, as well as keeping your Board vital, active, and effective.

We all know that people give money to people, not to organizations. That is why it is so important for nonprofits to target their potential large donors and figure out ways to draw them into the community that is the organization. When a large donor feels comfortable with the people involved, they will feel comfortable contributing to the success of those people.

That is why everyone needs to understand the urgency of sharing their enthusiasm with their networks. There are a number of ways this can be done. Here are just a few:

    1. Invite your prospects to various functions. These can be annual meetings, lectures, workshops, or any other public event sponsored by the nonprofit.

    2. Take your contact on a personal tour of the facility. Arrange for key people to meet you along the way. Plan to end up in the Executive Director's office where you can entertain questions and make a comfortable introduction.

    3. Plan to have targeted social events. Invite people "backstage" in your organization. Let them see things that are not regularly open to the public. Make them feel like an insider.

    4. Make them feel special. Let them know just how much you value their interest. Give them a sense of belonging.

    5. Ask them if they would consider volunteering. Ask them to do a very menial and non-threatening task. Some of the biggest donors I ever say started out by stamping letters two days a week for an hour or two.

    6. Tell potential donors that you would appreciate their advice. Let them know that you know something they can help with. Whether it is a simple question about finance, or an involved analysis of a computer system, people like to feel needed and wanted. They will respond to you much better if you can show them that their value to the organization is not only money.

    7. Ask your prospects about other people who might be interested in the work you are doing. Wealthy people generally fraternize with other wealthy people, and you just may find that your prospect leads you to much bigger potential.

    8. Provide a meaningful way for large donors to be recognized for their generosity. Whether it is a donor wall, plaques, or any other means of providing donors with public recognition, people will see the names of their friends, relatives and business associates. One of the biggest human emotions is the desire for praise, and creating a means to bestow that praise is a large incentive to many philanthropists.

    9. Ask a prospect to allow you to host a function at their home. You can tell them what a beautiful house they have, and how much your organization would appreciate using it for a luncheon or tea. Flattery will get you everywhere.

    10. Look for ways to tell your prospect stories about your organization. People relate to stories. It is much better to tell them about a patient experience, an audience event, or a student achievement than it is to tell them about your nurse to patient ratio, your demographics, or how many of the class went on to college.

The secret in raising large amounts of money is not how many letters you get out into the mail, but how many qualified donors your organization can befriend. Remember that friendraising is a long-term and ongoing project, so get your staff, board, and supporters on board and start now.

If you are considering a purchase of a vehicle- be it car , truck, SUV or even a bus then a walk around inspection of your prospective purchase may be the most valuable time spent saving you a great amount of time , money and expense and most of all heartache and aggravation. Not only that but by having more facts at your fingers puts you in the drivers seat so to speak in terms of negotiating price and terms with the seller of the vehicle – be it a private sale or an auto dealer themselves.

It's an amazing fact but many auto purchasers do not take the time to even walk around and inspect their prospective purchase fully with a simple 360 walk around of the car. Perhaps their mind is elsewhere – these days it is financing terms and even simple availaibility of financing for their new purchase. Perhaps they are just enamored with the vehicle from the start and want to purchase the car promptly as the early bird gets the worm. Nothing takes the place of a full 360 inspection before discussing purchase price and terms. Indeed one car purchaser only discovered after purchasing and examining the vehicle that the previous owner had only repainted one side of the car – the driver's side as it was the only side of the vehicle he ever saw. Not only that but the set of more expensive impressive hubcaps was only placed on the drivers side as well not on the passenger's side as well. The owner's reasoning was that since no one could compare the hubcaps while he was driving the car it was an inexpensive means to spruce up his vehicle purchasing a partial set of impressive hubcaps? Of course the driver's side was the side of the car that got the upgrade.

What should an inexperienced or experienced vehicle walk around inspector look for and examine. First of all of course look for obvious collision damage. Of course most used cars will have the usual parking lot dings and scrapes and perhaps a bit more. However be on the attention to note extensive collision damage to the auto body or its components such as trim, light reflectors, mirrors, bumpers or the radiator. One should pay particular attention, especially in some more rust prone geographic area where a lot of salt is used on the roads in the winter, for rust on the metal of the car body. Always remember that in most cases the rust you see is the tip of the iceberg eating up from the metal base as opposed to being surface rust only. Next see if you can spot or note any obvious structural damage to the body or frame. This of course in addition to your inspection for obvious collision damage. By looking under the hood and listening to the engine and examining the exhaust you may quickly be able to note an engine or transmission drive train that is on its way out. Leakage of fluids – radiator coolant, transmission fluid and engine oil under the car, on the pavement may be another indicator to watch out for and note.

In terms of the interior of the vehicle it's anyone's guess. Sometimes the best maintained mechanically cars are the dirtiest. Still at the worst calculate the price of having the car cleaned up to your specs as one of your out of pocket costs.

In the same manner have an estimate of costs out of your pocket when discussing price and terms in the purchase price of the car. If you are unsure of the price and complexity of any repairs – that it is beyond your technical expertise, then it is never a sin to ask someone more qualified. Better a moment now spent in finding out than a lot of time, trouble and money down the road. In these days of portable cell phones it's only a case of a simple call to your trusted mechanic, an auto repair shop or chain or at the worst a more automobile mechanically knowledgeable friend or family member.

By conducting a thorough and full walk around inspection you will be a much better position to both negotiate and purchase the vehicle or is need be walk away from the deal and travel further down the road so to speak on your automobile purchase quest.

Do you have rashes or non – healing sores on your skin?

Do you have continual itching or a burning sensation under your skin as if something was moving there?

Does it feel as if there are parasite , ,mites or insects just under your skin?

Have you begun to feel tired and perhaps are suffering at work, never ever feeling that you are able to concentrate?

Does your doctor ignore your repeated complaints and indeed think that you are crazy?

Indeed has your doctor told you that you test positive for a tick borne disease called Lyme disease even though you really do not think that you have Lyme Disease or since you live in a major city away from wooded areas it is highly unlikely that you ever encountered the Lyme Disease spreading ticks.

Do you seem to think that there are fibers of sorts growing under your skin?

These are all signs of Morgellon's Disease.

Morgellons disease is a real disease to many that the medical community is just beginning to recognize.

Even if you doctor is a recent new graduate he or she may have not been taught about this tragic disease or worse told that it is non-existent.

People have even committed suicide as a result of Morgellons.

Fear not. Knowledge and understanding regarding Morgellons Disease is growing every day. Even the prestgious Center for Disease Control in Atlanta )the CDC) is examining Morgellons Disease.

First of all be very carefull if your doctor has told you that you are nuts and has told you that you have any of the following:

    - lice

    - eczema espeically being blamed on stress

    - neurodermatitis that is simple eczema which has been made worse by you scratching it

    - tinea which is a very bad fungal infection of the hair , skin or nails

    - folloculitis which is an infection of the hair roots

    - cellulitis – a skin infection

    - seborrhea

    - impetigo – a rash caused by a bacterial infection

    - obsessive or compulsive skin scratching

    - and even drug side effects. This can be blamed on the use of drugs , overuse ,stopping taking drugs and even drug abuse of perscription or non presecritpion and illegal drugs.

    - Scabies - an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite.

Actually scabies is the closest thing to Morgellons if anything is.

It is amazing that you can be blamed for causing the disease or even thought of as a nutcase even when you are labelled as having the very similar disease "Scabies"

Well after all your trouble what can be done.

Believe it or not the first major hurdle is to convince anyone that Morgellons Disease is an actual disease like diabetes or typhus and indeed may be a spreadable disease.

This is the first major step in your eventual freedom from chronic troubling Morgellons Disease.

The Japan based company, Mazda, has provided various types and styles of automobiles which incorporate the aesthetic quality and functionality. Management believes in supplying the market with optimum levels of safety and performance in every manufactured car that they hand over to their customers. Due to outstanding product design, interior and features, the automotive media has developed a bias towards the Mazda Motor Corporation in Japan. One of the vehicles that the company considers as a remarkable invention is the Mazda3.

This vehicle is not the company's latest release. In fact, Mazda3 has been around the market for quite some time now. Several versions of the car have already been made and presented to different parts of the world. For instance, the base model's tires and wheels can measure up to 15 inches wheel. On the other hand, the high end variations can reach 17 inches wheel. Depending on the type of model, the vehicle may have an ABS and a brake force distributor which is electronically operated.

Presently, in the year 2010, a new version has been released. The bumper gives the redesigned model a more aggressive and dominant profile. For some who have been used to the car's softer look, the new version can be an acquired taste. Critics appreciate other more remarkable changes and find that they can forgive the bumper alteration because of other improvements. A very popular aspect for the critics is the car's interior. It has to be noted that this version doesn't quite belong in the class of expensive sedans. However, the quality of the materials used for this newer model is exemplary. Another luxurious addition is the new functions that not only provide more convenience to the riders, but also give an atmosphere of class. Then again, compared to other cars in its segment, these new functions can be a bit tedious to operate. Taking into consideration the price of the vehicle, the sophisticated interior won't disappoint, making it worth every penny you invest in a Mazda.

Ultimately, the new Mazda3 stands above its counterparts due to the sporty exterior compared to most sedans. The sides of the car look broader and can easily outweigh the simpler lines its competitors have to offer. This design element is comparable to other Mazda models like the CX-5 and CX-9; although on this particular instance, it is used on a sedan. Performance wise, it's in the top league. People who have driven the new model have proven the worthiness of the vehicle in terms of enhanced acceleration. The distinct sound that comes from the engine is still present, less the noise. Most car enthusiasts appreciate the controls and quick response of the brakes, not to mention the improved suspension.

For 2011, a newer version of the Mazda3 will be released. The only modification with regard to the vehicle is that other options are available to the whole model line-up. If your checking the market for a reasonably priced, classy and sporty car. You need not look any further.

Usually the choice of style and brand on this vehicle type vary from one person to another. There are individuals that favor one certain brand over others, although there are also those that just prefer certain styles, designs and specs over the others. Different strokes for different folks – personal preference is the term. Yet individual personal preferences serve as the most common basis for buyers in determining their own individual choice or choices for pick-up trucks. However a fresh point of view has been brought out in 2009 by the debut of one of the well known model of Chrysler, the 1500 series of Dodge Ram Truck. This truck model series eventually became the company's most sold vehicle ever.

Article Title: PGA Golf Lessons - Finding a Qualified Golf Instructor

You are either here because you are looking to learn how to play golf or you need some PGA golf lessons to help you cure that wicked slice, duck hook, shank, top…well you get the picture. Many players think that all golf instructors are created equal. That is not exactly true. Like other professions, there is a way for a professional to separate themselves through education.

Often we get questions about taking PGA golf lessons. Below are the most common questions that we get and some helpful information to get you started…

Are there different levels of golf instructors?

Obviously there are different levels of golf instructors as they will vary in experience as well as how they have educated themselves within the world of golf instruction. Within the PGA of America, there are different levels of membership. We will start with the highest rank and move down the list.

Master Professional – Once a Class A Professional has to have been a member for at least eight years and completed the requirements to become a Certified Professional, they can opt to become a Master Professional. To become a Master Professional, the professional must submit a project that is reviewed by other Master Professionals. In addition, they need to give a presentation and defend their project in front of a panel of Master Professionals. The process typically takes a couple of years and currently there are less than 200 in the US.

Certified Professional - As a Class A Professional, the professional has the chance to further their education in golf instruction by becoming Certified by the PGA of America in golf instruction. At this writing, the professional must write a paper that is overseen by a Master Professional as well as pass a written test on golf instruction. There are currently just over 400 PGA of America Certified Professionals in Golf Instruction in the US.

Class A Professional - A Class A Member has completed all of the membership requirements and education testing.

Apprentice Professional – An apprentice professional is working towards PGA of America membership. They are required to work for two years, pass all of the required testing as well as pass a Player's Ability Test (PAT).

How do I find a good golf instructor for PGA golf lessons?

Now that you understand the various levels of professionals within the PGA, you can find a good golf instructor and decide which one will best fit you depending on your goals. Some of you may just be beginning and are looking to have some fun while gaining some exercise while others are looking to play tournament golf and are looking to shoot the lowest possible scores.

To find a good golf instructor, go about it just as you would to find a doctor, accountant or real estate agent. Start by asking other friends or golfers that you know who are reaching the same goals that you want to reach. You can also resort to how you tend to find the majority of your information and head to your favorite search engine and start searching. One of the challenges with this is that many of the golf instructors that will come up in the search results may not be in your area.

How are PGA golf lessons offered?

Private Golf Lessons – This is the typical way that most people think of when they think of learning the game. The best part of taking a private golf lesson is that it is private. You are there with the professional and their focus is solely on you and trying to help you. This type of a lesson will become a necessity, if your goals are to be a tournament player. However, this is not for everybody. This format is intimidating to many players, especially newer players as they do not feel comfortable as an expert in the game of golf is watching them and getting ready to critique their swing.

Group Golf Clinic – If you have social golf goals, learning the game through a group golf clinic will be perfect for you. Although the format may vary, the instructor will give a short presentation to start the class and then the group will break up into individual stations to work on the message in the presentation. The instructor will then visit each participant and help them as best they can. You could be thinking that it does not seem like you would get very much instruction in this format. You will not receive as much as you would from a private lesson but that fact is offset by the lower cost of a golf group clinic. In addition, you will meet others that have the same interests that you do. You just may strike up a friendship that ends up being a life-long golfing partner!

Golf School – A golf school can be offered as a half day school all of the way up to a five day school. Of course, the format of every school will be different but they are usually pretty heavy on the golf instruction end to the point the participants wear themselves out since they are not used to practicing that much.

Online Golf Lessons - Online golf lessons are becoming a more and more accepted way to learn how to play golf or improve your game. Since literally anybody can put anything online, you will want to do the proper research with the information from above. With this being said, there are many great options to take online golf lessons. You will have access to a greater number of teachers, you can take them when you want to take them and you can take them wherever you are as long as you have an internet connection.

What should you ask before the taking PGA golf lessons?

No matter wheether you are looking for beginning golf lesson or looking to take lessons from an online golf academy, any instructor worth learning from will be more than happy to meet in person, on the phone or swap emails about their teaching style. You should ask about how the lesson(s) will be structured and what they expect from you during your lesson. After a brief interview, they should be able to confirm that you are taking instruction in the correct format and create a plan to reach some short term golf goals in which you both agree. In addition, the cost of the instruction should be very clear to you as well.

You should already know which type of learning style best suits you. Can you just be told something and change your swing? Do you like to see someone else do it and then you mimic it? Do you like to feel how the motion is supposed to feel through drills? There is no right or wrong answer to this but you will want to convey the answer to your instructor as this may change how the instructor will help you achieve your goals.

    What to do next…

You now understand the various levels of PGA Golf Professionals, have a few good leads on who you would like to learn from, have a good idea which format that you would like to take your instruction and have asked questions before taking the lessons. Now what? Schedule your lesson, sign up for the group or get your free online golf lesson membership and get started!
