Are you thinking about breeding your Shih Tzu or you are already an established Shih Tzu kennel? You might think about having your Shih Tzu tested for Brucellosis on a regular basis.
Brucellosis is a bacterial disease known very well by food animal producers. Brucellosis can cause a number of breeding problems such as abortions, infertility and decreased milk yield in cattle.
Not only does Brucellosis affect cattle, but it can also affect dogs, including the Shih Tzu, sheep, goats, pigs and even humans.
How is Brucellosis passed in these different species of animals including the Shih Tzu? The major way Brucellosis is transmitted is through direct contact of an infected aborted fetus, or uterine discharge. Brucellosis is also spread when animals eat contaminated feces, and through sexual contact.
Signs of a Brucellosis infection in dogs and the Shih Tzu may include:
• Abortion
• Infertility
• Infected reproductive organs
• Arthritis
• Disc disease
• Fever
• Hind limb weakness
• Lethargy
• General lymph node swelling
These are signs of many diseases; therefore, it is important to take your Shih Tzu to the veterinarian if it shows any of them. The veterinarian will draw a blood sample to make a definitive diagnosis of Brucellosis in your Shih Tzu.
If your Shih Tzu is diagnosed with Brucellosis be aware that it is difficult to treat. It often takes a long period of antibiotic therapy to get rid of Brucellosis fully. Blood samples are required to monitor the progress of the drug treatment. These blood samples can get expensive.
It is possible for humans to become infected with canine Brucellosis. You could possibly contract the disease of Brucellosis from your Shih Tzu; however, transmission from dogs to people seems to be uncommon.
Since Brucellosis is sexually transmitted, it is important for Shih Tzu breeders to be sure all of the Shih Tzu in their kennel test negative for the bacteria. If your Shih Tzu test positive for Brucellosis, do not breed them. Your Shih Tzu may in fact show no clinical signs of Brucellosis, but still be able to transmit the disease in semen or vaginal fluid. Therefore testing is vital.
When is the best time to test your Shih Tzu for Brucellosis?
• Female Shih Tzu should be tested a few weeks before they come into heat.
• Male Shih Tzu should be tested twice a year.
• Any new Shih Tzu brought into the kennel should be isolated until tests prove negative results twice. The second test should be done one month after the first one.
Many disinfectants prepared especially for kennel use easily kills the bacteria. The bacteria are also relatively easy to kill with a diluted bleach/water solution.
At the present time in vet science there are no vaccines available for canine brucellosis. Ways to help control Brucellosis in your Shih Tzu kennel include:
• Eliminating positive animals from breeding stock
• Proper disposal of waste and wearing gloves to handle any fetal membranes or aborted Shih Tzu fetuses, followed by thorough disinfection of the area.
Questions regarding canine Brucellosis should be directed toward your veterinarian.

The Pekingese breed is of the Royal breed of dog that existed in the Imperial palaces of the Celestial Empire. When the Summer Palace at Peking was looted by "foreign devils" bronze effigies of the Pekingese dogs were discovered known to be 2,000 years old. The Pekingese breed can also be found represented in all kinds of antique Chinese art. They may be seen carved in stone at the entrance of many an old temple. They are exquisitely portrayed in rare porcelains and tapestries. These little Pekingese creatures have always been jealously guarded and very few found their way into the outer world. The Pekingese were kept under the care of special attendants. These attendants were answerable for their safety with their lives. During this time it was impossible to obtain a specimen of the true Palace dog for any amount of money or love. It was only at the looting of the summer palace at Peking, during the occupation of the city by the Allies in 1860, that five of these exquisite creatures were forgotten in the hurried flight out of the Court. These five Pekingese were discovered in a part of the garden that was said to be the favorite place of the Emperor's Aunt, who committed suicide on the approach of the troops, the Princess Dowager.
Admiral Lord John Hay and another Naval Officer present at the time of the looting of the summer palace each took two of these Pekingese left in the garden, which was the foundation for the famous Goodwood strain. The fifth specimen was obtained by Gen. Dunn who gave it to Majesty Queen Victoria in England. It was a fawn and white, very small and attractive. Its portrait was painted for the Queen and is now said to be at the Windsor Castle. The other dogs were golden sable or rich chestnut brown with black markings. Their weight was from 4 to 6 pounds.
As far as historians can ascertain, these five Pekingese were the only Peking Palace or Sacred Temple Dogs which reached England for many years. A large proportion of the modern Pekingese can trace their ancestors to these five.
There were several unsuccessful attempts to get other Pekingese from the Palace. In 1896 Mrs. Douglas Murray succeeded in getting a pair direct from the Imperial Precincts. These were supposedly smuggled away with great difficulty. These two were the well known Ah Cum and Mimosa. Upon arrival in England their weight was 5 and 3 pounds respectively. The dog was bred to several of the Goodwood strain. In the first litters Ch. Goodwood Lo and Goodwood Put Sing were produced. These two and their father became famous sires. Most of the purest strains of the Pekingese today include them among their progenitors. Ah Cum lived a long life. He was said to be a true sleeve dog and perfect in all points.
In Peking the very small Pekingese specimens were called sleeve dogs because they were carried by the court ladies in the huge sleeves of their Chinese costumes.
And so are the beginnings of the Pekingese outside the Summer Palace.

Article Title: Is It Possible That Lifestyle And Health Behaviors Can Affect The Aging Process?

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Many people feel life expectancy is all in our genes and the aging process is little affected by our living habits. However, several scientific studies have looked at the aging processes of twins who were reared together and apart to see what contributions genetics vs. living habits had toward longevity. In two famous twins' studies it was found that aging was less related to genetic factors than to lifestyle and health behaviors. With the results of these studies we can with a fair amount of confidence feel that we can affect the aging process with our lifestyles and health habits.
We need to try and understand why we age. No one entirely understands why we age. Many of the theories of why we age propose the biological basis of aging. Many of the theories fit into two categories of aging theory:
•The first of these categories is stochastic theories of aging, which basically states that age is a result of random damage to cells and organs over time;
•The second category is programmed theories, which state the aging and death of cells is genetically determined.
A lot of studies demonstrate an association between excessive weight and shorter life spans. However, to say that the thinnest people live the longest has not been proven.
Studies do indicate that the lowest mortality rates are associated with a body mass index in the 21-22 range. To calculate your own BMI:
1.Convert your weight in pounds to kilograms by dividing your weight in pounds by 2.2.
2.Multiple your height in inches by 0.0254 to get your height in meters.
3.Multiply your height in meters by itself.
4.Divide the answer to #1 by the answer to #3.
In the New England Centenarian Study researchers investigated what helps people to live a long and healthy life by studying people who had successfully survive into "old old age." The group of men and women studied had remained physically healthy and mentally alert well into their nineties. Among the personal attributes that were common to a great majority of these survivors were:
•Low levels of depression;
•Striking ability to cope with, and adapt to, stress and loss;
•High levels of intellectual stimulation;
•Frequent use of humor as a coping mechanism;
•High levels of social interaction and support;
•Nearly universal lack of obesity, excess alcohol, and smoking.
What can conclude and learn from the study and these successfully aged Bostonians? To a large extent it is possible that lifestyle and health behaviors can help us to escape the aging hardships of time and live longer lives.
There are a number of ways to promote active, independent life into late life and beyond. It is more in our control than we probably realize.
First of all secure yourself a trusted personal physician and make yourself his assistant/partner in your healthcare. Start with the following:
•Get the most out of your doctor visits. Advanced planning can help you get more out of your visit.
•Keep a personalized healthcare book. In your book list your symptoms. Doctors are trained to recognize disease states by the pattern of symptoms the disease creates.
•If your doctor visit is the direct result of an illness the question you want answered is: What is wrong with me? Your goal should be to help your doctor as quickly and effectively as possible answer this question. Before your visit list the following questions and answers:
1.How long has it been going on?
2.How has it changed over time?
3.What was the first thing you noticed?
4.What did it feel like?
5.What other symptoms appeared?
6.What were you doing at the onset of symptoms?
7.What made your symptoms worse?
8.What made your symptoms seem to get better?
9.When did the symptoms start (as related to a new medicine, stress or injury)?
10.Where did the symptom move?
11.Where did new symptoms appear next?
Another dreaded part of aging for many is losing memory. If you stop and think for a minute, without memory, we are pretty much lost to all things and activities around us. Many people believe senility is inevitable and are afraid when they experience memory problems. There are ways that can perhaps help us to fight or prevent this type of mental decline.
Some theories are that we can build brain reserve to keep our memories healthy and possibly delay dementia. It has been proven there is a lower incidence of dementia in highly educated people. Higher education probably does not prevent Alzheimer's disease as there have been many brilliant people diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
Optimistic studies that look at the effects of aging on learning suggest that if elderly persons are taught to learn information in more efficient ways, using techniques such as categorization and patterning rather than rote learning, their information retrieval improves. It has long been understood and known that most old people maintain the same overall level of intelligence, but their ability to retrieve information stored in their memory changes. With the results of these new studies we can conclude elderly persons can be taught to learn in a different way to improve their memories.
Here are some ways to help you prevent memory loss:
•Maintain good health;
•Don't smoke;
•Take an aspirin a day;
•Use alcohol in moderation;
•Take note of medication reactions;
•Maintain psychological health. Psychological health is important to optimal brain function. Depression and other psychological problems can produce a lack of motivation to engage in intellectual stimulation necessary to maintain good brain health.
•Ask your doctor about vitamin/herbal supplements;
•Stimulate your brain! This is probably the most important step of all. You need to actively stimulate your brain in a fun and enjoyable way throughout your older years. Practice the following methods of stimulating your brain:
1.Stimulate hearing by listening to music and talking with friends;
2.Stimulate your vision by reading, and enjoying art or new sights;
3.Stimulate your sense of smell by appreciating the smells of nature;
4.Motor senses: Stimulate your motor sense by physical activity.
5.Crossword puzzles are excellent brain challengers;
6.New activities such as learning to play a musical instrument or an art activity you have never tried before. Learn a new language.
Do something you have always wanted to do, but never had the time to do. You will find pleasure, increased social interactions and a renewed sense of achievement, which all stimulates better brain function.
And don't forget about Albert Einstein who took up violin late in his life. Winston Churchill started painting. There is something everyone can find in life to stimulate brain function. Be adventurous, you have nothing to lose and only brain health to gain, which all contributes to a better memory in everyday life.
In conclusion, I do believe we have more control over the aging process than we realize.

Article Title: Parvovirus And Your New Maltese Puppy

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
You finally are able to pick up your Maltese puppy, take him home and begin to make him a part of your family. What an exciting time it is to bring home a brand new Maltese puppy. You have toys, a bed, and food and water dishes. You have everything you need to get started with this new Maltese puppy.
In these first moments of excitement I want you to remember your Maltese puppy is just like a newborn baby. He probably has had at least one maybe two vaccinations. You know the importance of establishing your Maltese puppy with a trusted vet. You also must be aware that canine parvovirus is everywhere in the environment just waiting for your puppy. As a wise dog owner you will continue all his vaccinations according to your personal vet's protocol to help protect your little Maltese puppy against this debilitating, sometimes deadly, disease. This is a canine disease that usually hits puppies the hardest. Adult dogs can also be affected, but usually the severity is much less.
Parvovirus passes through the feces of infected dogs. If another dog has oral contact with the infected feces they most likely will acquire the infection as well. Some puppies have more immunity to the disease than others. If your Maltese puppy's dam was properly vaccinated she will transfer greater immunity to parvovirus in the colostrums or the first milk. Maternal antibodies can be present in your Maltese puppy for up to 20 to 22 weeks. However, the Maltese puppy may not be protected the entire time.
Most of the Maltese puppy's maternal antibodies to other viruses we commonly vaccinate against will have disappeared by 12 weeks. The maternal parvovirus antibodies persist longer than this. Your Maltese puppy should have gotten its first vaccination for protection against parvovirus at least by 8 weeks of age regardless of when its dam's antibodies begin to wear off. Vaccinations should be continued every three weeks until the Maltese puppy is 20 to 22 weeks old.
When you Maltese grow older he still needs to be kept up on vaccines. As dogs age their immune system may become impaired and they can become more susceptible to diseases just as young puppies are.
In addition to a strict schedule of vaccinations against parvovirus and all other common canine diseases it is wise to keep your young Maltese puppy isolated from other dogs and out of parks where they may come in contact with infected feces until they have completed the series of vaccinations necessary to protect them against these diseases. Practicing these rules will decrease their chances of being exposed especially to the parvovirus which is so very contagious to young puppies and is absolutely everywhere in our environment. The parvovirus can even be carried on the shoes of humans. You can deal with this problem by wiping the bottom of your shoes off with a paper towel soaked in Clorox bleach.
Symptoms of the parvovirus are:
• Loss of appetite;
• Lack of energy;
• Vomiting or diarrhea;
• The vomit or diarrhea may be bloody.
Since these symptoms are common to many different diseases, it is important to see your veterinarian early if your Maltese puppy shows any of these symptoms for a definitive diagnosis and to begin treatment immediately if parvovirus is diagnosed. Young puppies, less than three months of age, can become dehydrated very quickly. These puppies can die easily if not treated promptly.
What to do if the "unthinkable" happens to your beautiful white fluffy Maltese puppy……
There is no drug a veterinarian can give your little Maltese puppy that kills parvovirus once the puppy is infected. The disease has to just run its course. Supportive care is the treatment of a parvovirus infection.
Sick animals will need to be given lots of fluids and sometimes even extra support in the veterinarian hospital with fluids given through the veins round the clock. Secondary bacterial infections sometimes develop. If a secondary bacterial infection develops antibiotics can be given to fight the bacterial infection, which is totally separate now of the parvovirus infection.
Length of treatment depends upon the individual puppy or dog. The age and the severity of the infection are two main factors in determining how long the animal will be ill. It may be a couple of days up to several weeks before recovery.
Parvovirus can remain in the environment for long periods of time. A heavy frost is necessary to kill the parvovirus outdoors. It is highly important to clean up after a parvovirus infection. Wash the animal's area with Clorox bleach and water in a 1:30 dilution to the kill the virus. Clorox bleach is the most effective cleaner against this virus. Throw away bowls and bedding to be most secure you have rid yourself of the virus in your environment. Discard promptly all feces from the infected animal. As you care for an animal affected with parvovirus wash your hands promptly with a mixture of the Clorox bleach and water dilution. Prepare a bottle to have on hand at all times. Humans can transmit the disease to other dogs. Very small amounts of the infected feces material contain large numbers of viral organisms that are easily transmitted to other dogs.
Now with all that said, hopefully, this will not happen shortly after the joy and excitement of bringing home that beautiful white fluffy Maltese puppy. Just be aware of what can occur and be prepared.

•Take a familiar object such as your baby's favorite stuffed animal or blanket
•Hold and talk to your child during the injection.
•Comfort your child with hugs and caresses.
•Softly sing a familiar song or whisper reassuring words
•Offer your baby a pacifier or bottle
Since an older child can talk, you can explain how shots protect them. Injections hurt and for this reason children often assume they are harmful and of course dread the pain or the thought of the pain of a needle stick. Explain to your older child that needles are the only way to get certain medicine inside the body to prevent illness. Never let your older child talk his or her way out of getting an injection.
Always be honest with your explanations. Tell the child that the injection will probably hurt, just a little; almost comparable to the pain of a sudden mosquito bite and will last only a few seconds, then its over.
I still don't like being stuck by needles. What has always worked effectively for me has been to just not watch any of the preparation, keep my head turned the other way and eyes closed until it's over. As a child, someone may have taught me to do this while receiving injections, I do not remember, however, the ritual has always been effective for relieving my anxiety about getting injections.
Children also seem to generally do better when they have been told in advance they are going to get an injection, but wait until the day of the doctor appointment to mention getting an injection. If you talk about it days before, the child may worry about it obsessively to the point of unnecessary "sickness." Do share the possibility of getting an injection right before you go into the doctor's office, or perhaps even while you wait in the waiting room for your personal doctor's visit.
Avoid promising your child there will be no injections unless you know this to be for certain.
Other techniques may include:
•Asking your child to take deep breaths and blow during the injection.
•Some parents have found providing a party noisemaker during the injection is an effective distraction
•Ask your child to count out loud during the injection. You might say count to five and by the time you get to five, the injection will likely be all over with
•Ask your child to squeeze your hand as hard as the injection hurts
Do not make your child feel bad if he or she cries after the injection. Most children do cry after receiving injections. Instead, you should praise your child, hold he or she close, and say something like, "you did such a good job." You might even give your child a special reward for the good behavior in the doctor's office.
Common side effects of injections may include:
•Fever
•Soreness at the site of injection
•Redness or swelling at site of injection
If you worry your child is having a serious side effect after an injection, of course, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible or seek emergency care.
Treatment for side effects of injections may include:
•Acetaminophen (Tylenol or others) before or after an injection. Follow label instructions for correct dosage
•Ice pack on the injection site
I still don't like the thought of and getting injections. Most people, regardless of age, do not like to get injections. With your help, your children too can learn to tolerate the procedure and realize the benefit of the medication is worth the tiny "sting" of pain.

Article Title: The Benefits And Risks Of Childhood Immunizations

A very important method of protecting young children from a multitude of serious diseases is the use of immunizations. If you are worried about your child getting these immunizations, take some time to understand the benefits and risks of the vaccines.
Potentially fatal diseases are most likely to occur when children are very young. Vaccines are given to children under school-age to help build up their delicate immune systems against these diseases. If you wait until school-age to vaccinate these diseases may have already taken their toll on your child's health and many children may never reach school age. There would be a return to a high infant mortality rate.
Each state requires an immunization record that usually has to be met before your child can enter school. You may need the proof of the immunization record at the time of registration. Your local school system can provide you with the current state laws and immunization requirements. If your religion prohibits immunization, most states also provide a religious-exception clause.
Immunity from the vaccine is usually as strong as immunity following the natural disease. Serious childhood diseases also may leave your child with a permanent disability or even death. The vaccines can be administered without risk of serious effects.
Some vaccines will require booster shots. These include:
•Tetanus shots
•Pertussis shots
These vaccines do not provide lifelong immunity. The booster shots are necessary to keep the immune system built up against these diseases. Regular booster shots also keep as much of the population as possible vaccine-protected, which establishes "herd" immunity. Herd immunity is when an individual has a lowered risk of catching a disease, not just because he or she has been immunized, but because so many others have been immunized. This leaves few people left who can spread the disease.
Combination vaccines are provided only after years of research and testing proves them to be safe. Children survive constant exposure to many different germs daily. They can handle the introduction of several weakened or killed disease strains in a vaccine at the same time.
Times when your child should not be vaccinated include:
•If your child has a serious illness, it may be important to postpone the vaccination until he or she has recovered (and this is for certain vaccines, your doctor will decide)
•If a child develops a life-threatening reaction to a particular vaccine, further doses of that particular vaccine should not be given
The common cold, sore throat or ear infection is not a reason to postponing vaccinations.
You should not skip recommended vaccines as this could leave you child vulnerable to the serious disease that could otherwise be avoided. If you are worried or concerned about vaccinations, consult with your child's doctors about these concerns.
Common side effects of vaccines include:
•Low-grade fever
•Soreness at the injection site
Only under rare circumstances, your child may experience:
•Serious allergic reactions
•Neurological side effects
Keep in mind that for healthy children, the benefits of vaccine protection outweighs the rare risks of vaccination.
Serious reactions are extremely rare, however, if your child does experience a serious reaction, contact your doctor immediately or go to your nearest emergency room facility.

Article Title: Peanut Butter Can Be Healthy

Some good news for those of us who likes peanut butter is that researchers at Harvard University's School of Public Health found eating a half serving (one tablespoon) of peanut butter or a full serving peanuts or other nuts (an ounce), five or more times a week, lowers the risk of developing type-2 diabetes by as much as 20 to 30 percent. Dr. Frank Hu, associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology says, "the body of evidence is overwhelming that peanuts and nut butters can reduce the risk of serious disease."
Many years ago I worked in a medical facility where I often snacked on peanut butter and loved it, but felt guilty. The nurse practitioner in that facility told me peanut butter is "very" healthy for you and in fact, she had once practically lived on peanut butter and crackers while going through nursing school. I also just love a simple peanut butter fudge recipe that can be whipped up in about 15 minutes.
Peanut butter contains about 90 percent peanuts and is packed with vitamins A and E, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron and fiber. It is loaded with monounsaturated, which is the so-called "good fat" that does not raise blood cholesterol levels. It is also virtually trans fat free according to the US Department of Agriculture. Healthy eating habits definitely include "peanut butter." Peanut butter lovers all over the world no longer have to feel guilty. It is good for us. Yey, rah rah for Peanut Butter.
Other encouraging studies include ones done at Penn State University where researchers compared a low-fat diet to one that was higher in monounsaturated fat from peanuts and peanut butter. Results were both diets will lower total and LDL-cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) levels. The peanut and peanut-butter diet had the added benefit of lowering triglyceride levels. Heart disease is linked to high triglycerides. The low-fat dieters lowered cardiovascular disease risk by only 12 percent, while the peanut and peanut-butter dieters lowered their risk by 21 percent.
Another interesting finding at Penn State is that peanut eaters had lower body mass indexes (BMIs) as compared to non-peanut eaters. High BMI (higher than 25) increases your risk of obesity-related problems like heart disease and/or diabetes.
On the negative side is that peanut butter is high in calories. A single serving or two tablespoons of low-fat or regular peanut butter has about 190 calories. Just be careful about eating a whole jar of peanut butter in one sitting. Peanut butter as a snack or a peanut butter and jelly on whole-wheat bread is acceptable. I believe I put about 4 whopping tablespoons of peanut butter in my fudge recipe. I usually eat a batch all by myself in about 2 or 3 days. If I do that only once a month, I should still be fine at my next doctor's appointment.

Article Title: Red Wine And The Aging Process

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Recent research suggests that aging as we know it may not be inevitable. We know that some animals do not seem to age such as many cold-water ocean fish, some amphibians and the American lobster continue to grow bigger, are able to reproduce and to live until something kills them. Some people believe that because of the animals that do not seem to age that it could be something in their genes, and possibly in our genes, that controls the pace of aging, and that aging is not the fate of every living thing.
Scientists have discovered that when animals are forced to live on 30 to 40 percent fewer calories than they would normally eat, they become resistant to most age-related diseases that include:
•Cancer
•Heart disease
•Diabetes
•Alzheimers
And they also live 30 to 50 percent longer. Judging from the animal studies, calorie restriction slows aging.
How this is, noone knows for sure, nor why aging occurs and what are the underlying genes that preserve vitality and stave off disease.
Few of us humans are capable of restricting our diets by 30 to 40 percent without being constantly hungry. So some scientists began to look for ways to trigger the sirtuin system in action without restricting calories. In 2003, a handful of sirtuin-activating compounds were discovered. Resveratrol – a molecule produced in plants such as red-wine grapes was the most potent.
Resveratrol and other STACs have enhanced the vitality and extended the life span of every species they have been fed to such as:
•Yeast
•Fruit flies
•Worms
•Fish
The maximum life span of the fish increased 59 percent, which is equivalent to a human living to 194 years. These results are remarkable; however, it is unclear if resveratrol works in the same manner in warm-blooded furry animals.
In studies with mice it was found that resveratrol:
•Reduced the risk of death by 30 percent
•The mice treated with resveratrol were leaner and developed a greatly enhanced aerobic capacity
•Their muscles were consuming oxygen more efficiently
•Had greater capacity to generate energy
•The mice could run twice as far without getting tired
•At least for mice, resveratrol was found to be an outstanding performance-enhancing drug
Evidence also indicates that resveratrol may protect against aging-related diseases. In studies around the world, resveratrol protected mice against:
•Heart disease
•Cancer
•Diabetes
•Alzheimer's disease
These are the very diseases that reduce most people's life span. The question of what this all means for humans is still unanswered, yet, could be just as beneficial. Things that are true in mice are often, but not always, true in humans.
Researchers plan many more studies in both animals and in humans in 2007. Some of the first human studies of resveratrol will tell us whether it can help people with either type 2 diabetes or a rare condition called MELAS syndrome that causes brain and muscle destruction in children.
Other good news is that research has started now to find sirtuin activators that have the same effects as resveratrol, but are more potent.
Resveratrol is found in red wine and because of this some people are asking whether they should drink more red wine, or drink red wine to the exclusion of other alcoholic beverages. I personally tried drinking a 6 ounce glass of red wine each night before I went to bed, and felt quite horrible the next day. I do not drink alcohol at all, but was trying this for myself because of all the news I read about the heart health benefits in red wine. I have abandoned the red wine for 10 fluid ounces of 100% grape juice. Most scientific researchers tell us there is not enough resveratrol in red wine to make it a good idea to start drinking it for our health.
Resveratrol tablets and capsules are also available over the counter, but they are of no "proven" value in humans, and they are not manufactured and controlled by the Food and Drug Administration.
Animals that have been given resveratrol treatment are remarkably vital until the end. The studies in animals seem promising. In the future we may be taking resveratrol supplements right along with our daily multivitamins. As of today, however, according to scientific proof, it is still better not to start drinking red wine if you are a non-alcoholic drinker to begin with in the hopes of prolonging your life or having better health. We are probably still safer drinking our 100% grape juice until further studies prove resveratrol in red wine is worth drinking an alcoholic beverage.

Article Title: Tips On Understanding And Living With A Child Who Has Autism

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Growing up with a friend or a sibling who has autism can be frustrating if you don't understand what having autism is all about for that friend or sibling.
Children with autism sometimes have a difficult time understanding what we say or what our facial and body expressions mean. You should not just stop trying to communicate with them because of this. Try showing them a picture or an object to help them understand things better. For example, if you are talking about the most recent basketball game at school, show them a basketball or a picture of the entire basketball team to help them understand what you are talking about.
To help you understand some of the behaviors common to kids with autism review the following list:
• Some kids with autism may have trouble talking and may make strange sounds, or they may not talk at all
• Some kids with autism may flap their hands, spin, or laugh a lot
• Some kids with autism will behave or play in unusual ways
• They may be very active or be very quiet and like to spend time alone
• They may have trouble looking directly at you
• Some kids with autism may say the same things over and over
Kids with autism, like all people, can get frustrated and angry. The difference is most often they cannot tell us why they are frustrated or angry. They may use actions instead of words to express their feelings.
A child with autism may make noises or spin around when he or she becomes upset, confused, or bored. When they are excited or happy they may flap their hands, jump up and down, or run in circles.
When surroundings or schedules change and/or things become different, many children with autism get upset. They may start to cry, hold their hands over their ears or run away. The reason children with autism react so differently to things that most of us do not even notice is because they have difficulty understanding or dealing with the world around them.
No one knows why some people have autism. There may be many different causes. Researchers continue to study and try to find out just what the causes of autism are and how best to help people with autism.
Kids with autism may be a member of your class or may be in a classroom that was set up especially for them. Some children with autism go to different schools; however, more and more children with autism today can go to regular schools and participate in after-school activities with classmates, friends and neighbors. This is so much better for the child with autism rather than continuing to separate them from the rest of the world.
Special arrangements may be used in classrooms to help a classmate with autism participate in the class. He or she may even have a special coach sit at their desk or table. He or she may use picture symbols to communicate with classmates and the teacher. There is special computer software that can "talk" for a child with autism. The absolute best way for you to deal with a classmate, a friend or sibling with autism is to remain "friendly."
Autism is not a disease that is contagious. Others cannot catch autism from a classmate, friend or sibling.
Becoming a friend to a child with autism can be a rewarding and learning experience for everyone involved. Review the following ideas to help you be a friend to a child with autism:
• Accept the differences
• Protect your friend from things that bother him or her
• Talk to a child with autism in small sentences and use simple words with lots of gestures
• Use pictures or write down what you want to say to your friend who has autism to help him or her understand you better
• Join your friend who has autism in activities that interest him or her
• Be patient and understand that your friend does not mean to bother you or others
• Invite your friend who has autism to play with you and to join you in group activities
• Sit near your friend who has autism, and help him or her do things if they want you to
• Help other kids learn about autism by telling them about your friend

Can you guess the most popular beverage in the US market this last decade? Green Tea made from unfermented tea leaves is the answer. Research suggests the fermentation process is what makes it contain the highest concentration of polyphenols, antioxidants that rids the body of free radicals. Some preliminary studies also show that green tea's polyphenols, particularly ECGC, can help stop the free-radical damage that may lead to cancer and heart disease.
Garlic has also been popular in that many people believe it is a heart disease preventative. I don't believe anyone is adding garlic to their green tea, but research does show, many people add garlic to all kinds of foods in the belief that it is good for their heart and a preventative for other diseases.
Green tea is popular as a healing brew; however, most studies on its effects have been done the in animals. Human studies of the effects of green tea have been population-based (studies that follow large groups of people over a specified period of time). The results of these studies have been inconsistent.
The Food and Drug Administration says there is no scientific evidence that drinking green tea reduces heart disease. A spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, Dave Grotto, says "Green tea has a lot of wonderful active compounds that may play a role in fighting cancer and heart disease and even protecting the lining of the arteries. "But there needs to be a lot more research."
Dr. Frank Greenway, head of the outpatient clinic at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., studies herbal supplements and obesity. He says, "There's nothing magic about green tea." "I'll be surprised if it is shown to have any profound effect on weight loss." There have been many claims that green tea does help with weight loss. Some studies suggest that green tea's polyphenols may boost metabolism and help burn fat.
Dr. Greenway also says, "Green tea won't hurt you." "Herbs always play catch-up when it comes to research."
Some studies show that some green tea drinkers may actually get more health benefits than others. Green tea provides more antioxidants freshly brewed.
Garlic is another popular additive to boost good heart health. Some people have been adding it to chicken wings, pasta and many other things. Researchers are saying garlic is not as powerful a cardiac protector as once thought.
A series of studies over the last several years show that garlic may not be so great at lowering cholesterol levels. Christopher Gardner, a Stanford professor of medicine led the study and he says, "I was somewhat surprised that even the raw garlic didn't have any effect. But the evidence is very clear. Garlic just doesn't work in lowering cholesterol levels."
The good news is that research does not rule out garlic's potential benefits in reducing levels of cardiovascular disease by lowering blood pressure or atherosclerosis.
Green tea and garlic probably do have some extra benefits, but to date scientific evidence does not prove either of them to help our health substantially.

Chocolate has antioxidant-rich phytochemicals called flavanols. Although chocolate have some healthful antioxidants it is still considered a "treat" food by professional dietitians. It is not a health food. Walnuts on the other hand are loaded with nutritional benefits.
Some researchers think the cocoa bean may improve blood flow and reduce the formation of clots. The Kuna Indians of Panama are heavy consumers of cocoa. They boast an unusually low amount of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Harvard researchers found that chocolate eaters lived a year longer than abstainers. Most believe chocolate causes acne; this is not true. A small study done recently suggests the appearance of the skin of chocolate-eating women showed improvement.
Not all chocolate is good for you. In general, darker chocolate is better because it contains more flavanols and less sugar than milk chocolate.
Use cocoa powder that has been dutched to make hot chocolate. The dutch treatment destroys phytochemicals.
And as for walnuts – well – walnuts are a whole different story. Walnuts offer substantial cardiovascular benefits. The FDA allows companies to say on their packaging that eating 1.5 ounces every day can reduce the risk of heart disease.
Walnuts are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid, which helps to raise the good cholesterol. Researchers have also found that the alpha-linolenic found in walnuts helps keep your blood flowing smoothly through your arteries – even after you eat a lot of saturated fats, which can harden the arteries and potentially contribute to heart attack and stroke. Fat found in walnuts decrease inflammation in the arteries and helps keep them flexible.
Walnuts are rich in antioxidants that help rid the body of unstable molecules called free radicals, which can lead to cancer. Other benefits of walnuts may include:
•Some protection against the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis
•Good for your teeth in that they help to fight cavities
•Helps increase the feeling of fullness after a meal (try eating six walnuts twice a day, 30 minutes before lunch and 30 minutes before dinner)
Storing walnuts:
•Store shelled walnuts in the refrigerator in an airtight container to keep them fresh for up to six months. Freeze them to last up to a year.
•Store unshelled walnuts in the refrigerator. They will keep for up to six months in any cool, dark place.
Walnuts and chocolate seem to go good together and both are good for you. Walnuts and chocolate are both high in calories so moderation is the key when enjoying either of them. Walnuts seem to have the most scientific proof of being an excellent health food especially for the heart. Chocolate is still considered a "treat" food.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. The breakdown of joint cartilage caused by osteoarthritis may affect any joint in your body. Joints affected may include:
• Fingers
• Hips
• Knees
• Lower back
• Feet
At first osteoarthritis may affect only one joint, but if your fingers are affected, multiple hand joints may become arthritic.
There are available treatments for osteoarthritis, but no cure. The available treatments can relieve pain and help you remain active.
Some people may not experience symptoms because the disease often develops slowly. Signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis may include:
• Pain in a joint during or after use, or after a period of inactivity
• Discomfort in a joint before or during a change in the weather
• Swelling and stiffness in a joint, particularly after using it
• Bony lumps on the middle or end joints of your fingers or the base of your thumb
• Loss of joint flexibility
Areas in which osteoarthritis typically affects include:
• Fingers: Bony knobs can enlarge your finger joints and create a gnarled appearance. Early in the disease, your joints may feel painful or stiff and numb. The pain eventually often subsides, but leaves bony nodes that affect the mobility of the joints at the end of your fingers. The nodes run in families and affect women more than men.
• Spine: As the disk slowly deteriorate between the bones along your spine, back and neck pain and stiffness may occur.
• Weight-bearing joints: The hips, knees and feet are more susceptible to osteoarthritis because they bear the majority of your body's weight. Over the years cartilage slowly deteriorates and chronic pain or varying amounts of discomfort when you stand and walk can occur. Swelling especially in the knees may also occur.
Treatment for osteoarthritis
Your doctor may recommend a combination of treatment that includes medication, self-care, physical therapy and occupational therapy. Surgical procedures may also be necessary in some cases.
Medications may include:
• Topical pain relievers such as Aspercreme or Sportscreme, Icy Hot and Ben-Gay.
• Acetaminophen like Tylenol and others can relieve pain but does not reduce inflammation
• NSAIDs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs work to relieve pain and fight inflammation. They range from OTC aspirin, ibuprofen like Advil, Motrin IB and others to prescription strength
• Cox-2inhibitors: Are considered as effective as other NSAIDs for managing pain and inflammation without the same stomach-damaging effects. Other side effects of Cox-2inhibitors may include fluid retention, exacerbating high blood pressure and links to increased risk of heart attack and stroke
• Tramadol: Available only by prescription, has no anti-inflammatory effect, but can provide effective pain relief with fewer side effects such as stomach ulcers and bleeding. Tramadol may cause nausea and constipation. It is generally used for short-term treatment of acute flare-ups.
• Antidepressants: Tricyclics especially can help reduce chronic pain. They can treat sleep disturbances that can accompany arthritis. Some antidepressants used for arthritis pain and nonrestorative sleep include amitriptyline and nortriptyline.
• Injections of pain relievers: Corticosteroid injections into a joint space can offer some pain relief and reduce inflammation.
Surgical or other procedures used to treat osteoarthritis include:
• Joint replacement
• Arthroscopic lavage and debridement
• Repositioning bones
• Fusing bones

Choose vegetable oils and margarines with liquid vegetable oil as the first listed ingredient and no more than 2 grams of saturated fat per tablespoon. Examples include:
匹anola
匹orn
桧live
百afflower
百esame
百oybean
百unflower oil
Choose liquid or tube margarines low in saturated fat and trans fat. Choose reduced-fat and no-fat salad dressings and mayonnaise with no more than 1 gram of saturated fat per tablespoon.
Preparation tips include:
俵se fats and oils lowest in saturated fat and cholesterol for cooking, baking and in spreads sparingly.
俵se reduced-fat or no-fat salad dressings with salads and dips.
匹oconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil have no cholesterol; however, they are high in saturated fat.
Fish and Omega-3 Fatty Acids
The American Heart Association recommends eating fish, particularly fatty fish, at least two times per week. Good choices include:
筆ackerel
畢ake trout
菱erring
百ardines
柊lbacore tuna
百almon
Other good sources of omega-3 Fatty acids include:
百oybeans
匹anola
標alnut and flaxseed and their oils
The American Heart Association does not recommend widespread use of folic acid and B vitamin supplements to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Instead, they advise a healthy, balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Good sources of Folic Acid include:
匹itrus fruits
謬omatoes
彪egetables and grain products
標heat flour fortified with folic acid
There is a lack of evidence for the benefit of lowering homocysteine levels; however, patients at high risk should be advised to be sure to get enough folic acid and vitamins B-6 and B-12 in their diet. Sources of these vitamins include:
彦ruits and green, leafy vegetables eaten daily.
Potassium
Potassium is necessary for the body痴 growth and maintenance. It plays an important role in the response of nerves to stimulation and in the contraction of muscles. Good sources of foods high in potassium include:
稗ananas
匹antaloupe
膝rapefruit
桧ranges
謬omato or prune juice
菱oneydew melons
姫runes
筆olasses
姫otatoes
If you need to keep your weight under control eat lower calorie potassium containing foods such as fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products.
Food labels are a major accomplishment for the American Heart Association who participated actively in the legislation and regulatory process that has made nutrition labeling more useful to consumers. It is now easier for consumers to choose foods low in saturated fat, total fat, cholesterol and sodium as well as foods that contain potassium, calcium and other nutrients.
I rarely purchase an item these days without first reading the nutritional label. Remember to read nutritional labels when provided on foods. Nutritional food labels are a tremendous asset for everyone.

Childhood Disintegrative Disorder Overview
Childhood disintegrative disorder is a severe loss of social, communication and other skills classified in a group of disorders called "Pervasive Developmental Disorders." Onset is usually after the age of four. The signs and symptoms are similar to autism, although autism usually occurs at an earlier age and is more common.
Pervasive developmental disorders include:
• Childhood disintegrative disorder
• Autism
• Asperger's syndrome
• Rett syndrome
• Pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified
A Viennese educator, Theodor Heller, first described the condition. Childhood disintegrative disorder is also known as Heller's syndrome after Theodor Heller.
Signs and symptoms of childhood disintegrative disorder include:
• Normal development for at least the first two years of life
• Significant loss of previously acquired or learned skills before age 10 in at least two of the following areas:
1. ability to say words or sentences
2. ability to understand verbal and nonverbal communication
3. social skills and self-care skills
4. bowel and bladder control
5. play skills
6. motor skills (ability to voluntarily move the body in a purposeful way)
The lack of impairment occurs in at least two of the following areas:
1. social interaction
2. communication
3. repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and activities
Childhood disintegrative disorder may occur abruptly over the course of days to weeks or gradually over an extended period of time. There is seldom found an underlying medical or neurological cause.
Further research is difficult due to the limited number of children diagnosed with childhood disintegrative disorder, although more research is needed at this time. Experts suspect there may be a genetic basis or that an autoimmune response plays a role in the development of childhood disintegrative disorder.
Treatment
Treatment for childhood disintegrative disorder is about the same as for autism; there is no cure for this disorder. Treatment may include:
• Medications: There are no medications specifically to treat childhood disintegrative disorder. Severe behavior problems like aggression and repetitive movements can sometimes be controlled by antipsychotic medications.
• Behavior therapy may be used by psychologists, speech therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists, parents, teachers and caregivers.
Prognosis for children with childhood disintegrative disorder is usually poor and worse than for children with autism. Children with this disorder often need residential care in a group home or long term care facility.

There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble. Fruits, vegetables, some whole-grain foods, beans and legumes are good sources of dietary fiber.
Soluble fiber has been shown to help lower blood cholesterol when regularly eaten as part of a diet low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol. Good sources of soluble fiber include:
桧at bran
桧atmeal
稗eans
姫eas
紐ice bran
稗arley
匹itrus fruits
百trawberries
柊pple pulp
Insoluble fiber does not seem to help lower blood cholesterol. Insoluble fiber is an important aid in normal bowel function. Good sources of insoluble fiber include:
標hole-wheat breads
標heat cereals
標heat bran
匹abbage
稗eets
匹arrots
稗russels sprouts
謬urnips
匹auliflower
柊pple skin
The American Heart Association recommends eating foods high in both types of fiber.
A lot of the commercial oat bran and wheat bran products like muffins, chips, and waffles contain very little bran; they may also be in high in sodium, total fat, saturated fat and trans fat. You should always read food labels on packaged foods.
Fat
There are four major kinds of fats in foods we eat; they include:
百aturated
姫olyunsaturated
筆onounsaturated
謬rans fatty acids
Saturated fats and trans fats raise blood cholesterol. A high level of cholesterol in the blood is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and also increases the risk of stroke.
The American Heart Association recommends to limit foods high in saturated fat, trans fat and/or cholesterol such as whole milk dairy products, fatty meats, tropical oils, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and egg yolks. Review the following tips for choices of foods low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol:
髭at a variety of fruits and vegetables

Fat Substitutes
Fat substitutes currently on the market are considered safe by the US Food and Drug Administration. However, their long-term benefits and safety are not known. The fat-modified products introduced into the food supply recently only affect a few foods. The American Heart Association feels that within the context of a healthy diet that meets dietary recommendations; fat substitutes used appropriately can provide flexibility with diet planning.

Vegetables and fruits are rich in nutrients, low in calories and high in fiber. Diets high in vegetables and fruits meet vitamin, mineral and fiber needs without adding a lot of calories. Diets rich in vegetables and fruits have been shown to lower blood pressure and improve other cardiovascular disease risk factors.
The American Heart Association continues to recommend the following to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease:
• Consume an overall healthy diet
• Aim for a healthy body weight
• Aim for recommended levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides
• Aim for a normal blood pressure and blood glucose level
• Be physically active
• Avoid use of and exposure to tobacco products
• Drink alcohol in moderation
A healthy diet includes:
• Eating a variety of whole (fresh, frozen, or canned) vegetables and fruits
• Eat more deeply colored vegetables and fruit such as spinach, carrots, peaches and berries (they tend to contain higher amounts of vitamins and minerals than others such as potatoes and corn)
• Choose whole fruits over juice most often (whole fruit contains more fiber)
• At least half of your grain intake should come from whole-grain foods
• Reduce intake of beverages and foods with added sugars (primarily to lower total calorie intake and to get enough of the nutrients your body needs)
Recommended servings per day for a healthy person needing 2,000 calories each day includes:
• 6 to 8 servings of grains (at least half of the servings should be whole-grain foods)
• 8 to 10 servings of vegetables and fruits (about ½ cup counts as a serving)
Cholesterol:
Cholesterol is an important part of a healthy body, however, high levels of cholesterol in the blood, is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, which leads to heart attack. Typically the body makes all the cholesterol it needs, so people do not need to consume extra to get enough.
Some of the excess dietary cholesterol is removed from the body through the liver. The American Heart Association recommends that you limit your average daily cholesterol intake to less than 300 milligrams. If you have heart disease, they recommend limiting your daily intake to less than 200 milligrams. Everyone should remember that by watching how much cholesterol they take in each day can help significantly lower total dietary cholesterol intake. Especially watch foods high in saturated fat.
Regular physical activity is helpful in increasing HDL cholesterol in some people. Higher HDL cholesterol is related to a lower risk of heart disease. Physical activity also helps control weight, diabetes and high blood pressure. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease.
Tobacco smoke is among the six major risk factors of heart disease. Smoking lowers HDL cholesterol levels and increases the tendency for blood to clot.

Article Title: When To Call The Doctor For A Sick Baby

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
It is sometimes difficult to know exactly when to call the doctor if your baby seems sick or even when to seek emergency care. Babies cannot tell us when something hurts.
Some specific signs that may require a call to your doctor include:
• Changes in appetite
• Changes in mood
• Changes in skin color
• Tender navel or penis
• Fever
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Dehydration
• Constipation
• Upper respiratory infections
• Ear pain
• Rash
• Eye discharge
• Minor injuries
Signs and symptoms that require emergency care include:
• Bleeding that can't be stopped
• Poisoning
• Seizures
• Trouble breathing
• High fever
• Head injuries
• Sudden lethargy or inability to move
• Choking
• Unresponsiveness
Constipation:
Infants who have not had a bowel movement in three days are most likely constipated. Infants usually pass about four stools a day. Breast-fed infants have even more bowel movements than formula-fed infants.
What to do about infant constipation:
• 0 – 2 months: Call your doctor for advice
• 2+ months: Give the infant 2-4 ounces of water twice a day. If constipation does not improve, try 2-4 ounces of fruit juice – such as grape, pear, apple, cherry or prune – twice a day.
• 4+ months: If already eating solid foods, feed him or her baby food that is high in fiber such as peas, beans, apricots, prunes, peaches, pears, plums or spinach twice a day until constipation improves.
Never give mineral oil, stimulant laxatives or enemas to infants.
Infant constipation is rarely due to an underlying condition. It usually occurs with the transition from breast milk to formula or from strained foods to table foods. However, if constipation persists, call your doctor.
Cradle cap is another common condition in babies. Cradle cap can usually be prevented by shampooing your baby's hair every few days with a mild baby shampoo.
Cradle cap causes scaly patches on a baby's scalp; however, cradle cap is quite harmless. It looks awful, but it is harmless. The patches may be thick, yellow, crusty or greasy. It is most common in newborns, and often clears up on its own within a few months.
You can wash your baby's hair once a day with mild baby shampoo, and loosen the scales with a small, soft-bristled brush before rinsing off the shampoo. If the scales do not loosen easily, rub a few drops of mineral oil onto your baby's scalp. When the oil soaks into the scales after a few minutes, then brush and shampoo your baby's hair as usual. Do not leave the oil in your baby's hair; it may allow more scales to accumulate.
Time to call your doctor is if frequent shampooing does not help or the scaly patches spread beyond baby's scalp. Older babies may require a prescription antifungal shampoo if they acquire scalp ringworm infections. Scalp ringworm infections resemble cradle cap and would require calling your doctor for specific advice.

Hay fever or allergic rhinitis is a common allergic response to specific substances in your environment. Hay fever is one of the most common allergic conditions in the United States.
Seasonal hay fever is triggered by tree pollen, grasses or weeds and other plants. Year-round symptoms can occur if you have indoor allergy to dust mites, cockroaches, mold or pet dander.
Mild hay fever symptoms can be managed effectively with over-the-counter medications. Year-round symptoms or severe seasonal hay fever symptoms may require an allergy specialist for appropriate evaluation and treatment. My year-round allergy symptoms are managed effectively by an internist. An internist is a physician who specializes in adult diseases.
Without proper treatment of hay fever symptoms there can be an increase of more allergic conditions such as asthma or eczema. Uncontrolled hay fever symptoms will impair the quality of your everyday life.
Hay fever symptoms include:
• Runny nose
• Watery nose
• Congestion
• Frequent sneezing
• Itchy eyes, nose, roof of mouth or throat
• Swollen, blue-colored skin under eyes
• Postnasal drip
• Cough
• Sleeplessness
• Fatigue
• Irritability
• Facial pressure and pain
Hay fever symptoms are similar to the symptoms of a common cold, however, there are differences. Hay fever does not mean you are allergic to hay and is not triggered by hay. It does not cause a fever. The probable cause is an allergic reaction to pollen or mold. Heredity plays a role in determining who becomes allergic including hay fever. If allergies or asthma runs in your family, you may be more likely to develop hay fever.
You are most likely to develop hay fever during childhood or early adulthood, but it can begin at any age. As you get older, symptoms may worsen or improve. I have noticed my hay fever seems to be diminishing; however, this could also be due to better allergy medication.
Treatment for hay fever symptoms:
Your doctor will identify what allergy triggers your symptoms and then develop a plan to avoid and/or cope with those substances. Review the following treatment options:
• Nasal corticosteroids sprays
• Antihistamines relieve itching, sneezing and runny nose. Common antihistamines include Benadryl, Chlor-Trimeton, Tavist, Claritin
• Decongestants are often used in combination with antihistamines and include Sudafed, Actifed
• Cromolyn sodium helps relieve hay fever symptoms by preventing the release of histamine.
• Leukotriene modifier: A prescription tablet taken to block the action of leukotrienes
• Nasal atropine helps relieve a severe runny nose
It is important to talk to your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications for hay fever especially if you have a chronic health condition that requires you to take other prescription drugs. You will need to know whether or not there could be a drug interaction or other adverse effect.
I will never forget the time I was seeing an internist for an upper respiratory problem, who prescribed a medication that if taken with other medications I was on could have caused an instant fatal heart attack. The pharmacist is the one who warned me of this. It is important to stay alert when taking several different kinds of medications. It is not always the doctor who can give or who gives you all the medicine's side effects. A good pharmacist has a wealth of knowledge about drugs and their interactions with each other. Make it a practice to always ask your pharmacist about side effects and interactions as well as your doctor. I did change internist after that incident and was then diagnosed correctly and given the appropriate medications for my hay fever symptoms.
If medications do not relieve your hay fever symptoms, your doctor may recommend allergy shot therapy. The goal of immunotherapy or desensitization therapy is to desensitize you to specific allergens, reduce your signs and symptoms, and decrease your need for medications. Allergy shots are usually given over a period of three to five years to reach this goal.

There are several strains of bacteria that can cause bacterial meningitis. Several routine childhood immunizations like Haemophilus influenzae type B and pneumococcal protect against many types of bacteria that can cause meningitis. If your infant is exposed to bacterial meningitis and is current on all of his immunizations which includes the flu shots the infant may not need an additional meningitis vaccine. To be certain, check with your doctor.
Bacterial meningitis is an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be very serious and sometimes even deadly. By keeping your infant up-to-date on immunizations, you are protecting him or her against bacterial meningitis.
For children ages 11 or 12 a vaccine against bacterinum Neisseria meningitides, which is a common cause of bacterial meningitis is routinely recommended. The vaccine can also be given to younger children at high risk of bacterial meningitis or who have been exposed to the disease.
Antibiotics are helpful in reducing, but do not eliminate, the risk of developing bacterial meningitis if you know or suspect your child has been exposed. You can talk to your doctor about preventative antibiotics.
Seek urgent medical care if your child becomes ill after exposure to bacterial meningitis even if the child has taken antibiotics.
Symptoms of meningitis in infants include:
•Excessive irritability or sleepiness
•Constant crying and poor eating
It is crucial to receive a prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment of bacterial meningitis to prevent serious complications from the disease.
Many people often also wonder if children really need a flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does recommend the flu vaccine for children who are at increased risk of complications from influenza. A child at risk includes:
•Children between the ages of 6 months and 59 months
•Children who have a chronic medical condition like asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, sickle cell anemia, HIV/AIDS or kidney disease
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends the flu vaccine for all caregivers, household contacts, and siblings of children in the high-risk groups to reduce a child's potential exposure to the influenza virus.
If your child is younger than 9 years of age he or she will require two doses of the flu vaccine one month apart. Only one dose does not provide adequate protection. Before flu season is best time to receive a flu shot.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Just a few short years ago hardly anyone knew what a blog was, but now, because they are so easy to set up and maintain, their popularity has blossomed beyond all expectations. Blogs are not just for ordinary people who wish to expound on their hobby or area of special interest. Blogs are for the smart small businessperson who understands the power of the published word online.
A blog can provide a low cost means of marketing online, a feedback mechanism for establishing your side of the story against someone spreading negative and potentially damaging things about you and your business, and a means of connecting and communicating with existing clients and potential clients. The purpose of this article is to explain these three main positive reasons why your small business needs a blog.
1. A Blog as a Marketing and Promotion Tool for Your Small Business
Small business internet marketing seems easy at first glance, but many have tried it and failed. Others have persevered, perfecting search engine optimization techniques, keyword density and linking strategies, which work for some but not always for others. They have followed the advice of every "guru," only to be more mystified at the end of the process than when they started out. They invariably end up thinking that there has to be a better way, and there is - a blog.
The search engines love blogs. Yes, a little optimization with careful keyword placement and some back links will never go amiss, but even the complete novice knowing nothing whatsoever can enjoy good results simply by regularly maintaining a blog. All it takes is a simple strategy, perhaps focusing on a particular product line and posting just once a day, to get results that will make a difference.
With time and as your understanding of blogging techniques improve, your small business internet marketing efforts will bear significant fruit. And remember, the cost of all this is negligible compared to newspaper advertising, for example. Of course, this is not the only reason why your small business needs a blog. What if someone is "badmouthing" you by blogging all over the Internet, perhaps because they didn't like something about the way you do business? How do you defend yourself and give your side of the story? You need a blog!
2. A Blog as Feedback Channel to Establish a Positive Image for Your Small Business
A real-life example of someone who found themselves dealing with negative blog posts involves a medical doctor who practices on her own in California. She treated two patients whose poor health situation was largely of their own making. She told them that they needed to take some responsibility for their own health. This was not at all what they wanted to hear. Feeling insulted, they started to blog about it online, giving only their side of the story and painting a very damaging picture of the doctor in the process.
If you were to go to Google or any of the major search engines now and do a search for her name, the only information you would find are negative, almost libelous, rants created by these two aggressive individuals who couldn't face up to the truth about their own health situations.
However, had this doctor previously considered the advantages of blogging for local small businesses to complement her business activities, she would have been able to limit at least some of the damage caused. Patient confidentiality rules would have prevented her from posting a positive rebuttal to the negative blog posts -her side of the story in other words. But she could have built up an archived library of positive and factual information about herself and her practice, automatically dealing with negative blog posts at the same time. Anyone then using Google to search for her name would still have found the negativity, but they would also have found the positive balanced view.
This type of situation can happen to anyone running a business, not just doctors. A blog for your business offers you the chance of great flexibility to promote your business, publish a positive image, and to communicate with all your clients, even those who don't know that they have yet to become your clients!
3. A Blog as a Communication and Connection Tool for Your Small Business
People love getting free things on the Internet. We all do, in fact. And one of the most successful things to give away and help build your business at the same time is a free newsletter. Traditionally, this has taken the form of a specially formatted email, but increasingly small business owners are turning to blogs for publishing their newsletters. They still send out an email to the people on their list, but only to send them over to the blog where the newsletter can be read online.
This is a great way to communicate with your existing clients. You can regularly give them useful information, making them realize that your newsletter has real value. And every so often you can pitch an offer - a special bargain offer perhaps, and a percentage will make a purchase that you would not have had otherwise. But it doesn't have to stop there. Your blog can be a tool for getting new customers too.
If you have carefully built up your business blog with regular and useful posts, the search engines will have noticed and in time your blog will be ranked according to whatever the search engines deem appropriate. Hopefully this will be a favorable placement, and if it is, people who search for the kind of product information you provide will find your blog.
When they are on your blog you can ask them to sign up for email alerts to whenever you make a new post, or whenever your latest newsletter is published. Once you have them on a list you can make offers to them and a percentage of them will buy. Blogging for local small businesses can be a wonderfully inexpensive and highly effective method of acquiring new customers with little effort.
There are many more ways to use a blog for any small business. Often it just requires your imagination to come up with new ways to use it. And you don't have to limit yourself to only one blog; you can have several, each one dealing with a particular topic, and all of them linked together. This can be extremely powerful if done properly, and it isn't hard to do either.
The three reasons I have offered you for why your small business needs a blog are indeed important ones. But they are not the only reasons. Don't waste time now trying to think up other reasons. Get a blog in place first, and then the ways to use your blog will become increasingly obvious. You really do owe it to yourself to get your own small business blog in place today!

Article Title: Are You Making These 5 Common Pay-per-click Mistakes In Your Small Business?

Because of the ability to specifically target your unique prospects based on interest as well as geography, the ability to tightly control your ad spend and to precisely measure results, Pay-Per-Click (PPC) is probably the greatest breakthrough to come along in advertising since the launch of television. And, because of those same benefits, it's much more affordable for the small to mid-size business owner to leverage for their business (as compared with television and many other advertising alternatives).
That being said, PPC is not as easy as it seems at first glance. Business owners looking to launch their first campaign will quickly discover how easily they can spend hundreds – and even thousands – of dollars in wasted efforts while they learn to navigate the PPC waters.
While entire books have been written on the ins-and-outs of pay-per-click advertising, there are 5 common mistakes that I see business owners making when I'm asked to evaluate their pay-per-click campaign strategies. These mistakes are easy to fix, and doing so will dramatically increase the effectiveness of your pay-per-click campaign!
The 5 most common PPC mistakes are:
1. Using your home page as the landing page. No matter which search engine you use for your campaign – Google, Yahoo!, MSN or any other – you can decide where to direct your new customers when they click on your ad. The most common mistake I see business owners make when they launch their PPC campaign is directing those clicks to their home page. The thinking seems to be that their home page is equivalent to the front door of their business, and they want their new customers to walk through – but that's where they go wrong. With PPC advertising, your prospect is searching for something highly specific – that's the "keyword" they've entered into the search engine. Having them land at your home page is the equivalent of having them ask you for a specific item in your store, and you telling them – "it's in here somewhere, it's up to you to find it." Obviously you wouldn't do that in person with your customers – and you don't want to do it online, either. By designing what's known as a "landing page" – the place where visitors "land" when they click on your ad - you can present your customer with exactly what they are looking for when they come to your site. Your landing page should be tightly focused to the keywords you are using for your PPC ad, with no other links or distractions to confuse your prospect. This dramatically increases their satisfaction with your site, as well as the likelihood that they will make a purchase from you.
2. Not customizing your landing page to your prospects' keyword searches. The way an ideal PPC campaign works is something like this: a prospect enters a search term – for my business it might be "e-mail marketing." They are presented with my PPC ad with "e-mail marketing" in the headline AND the ad copy. My prospect clicks on my ad and is taken to my landing page that is all about e-mail marketing. (I will have bid on both "e-mail marketing" and "email marketing" to capture searchers entering it both ways). The likelihood that my prospect will become a customer is high, because there is no confusion about what the page is about – no wondering if he's in the right place or if we offer what he is looking for. A common mistake I see business owners making with their PPC campaigns is to try to combine several products or services into one landing page. This leads to frustration when your searcher clicks on your ad and lands on a page that they aren't sure offers what they are specifically looking for. Make sure your landing pages are customized to the keyword your prospect is searching for – and quickly turn prospects into customers.
3. Using generic ad copy in your PPC ads. The tricky thing with PPC ads is you don't have much real estate to work with. Google allows just 70 characters; Yahoo allows 190 characters (with spaces) in a text ad. When every single word counts, you can't afford to use meaningless words like "high quality service," or "established in 1903." While these statements may be true about your business, they don't target the specific searches your prospects are entering to find the products and services they are looking for. A mistake I see clients make in their PPC ads is to include these type of generic statements that don't set their business apart. When you are writing your ad, you'll want to include specific keywords that your prospects will likely enter to find what you have to offer. Your headline must be captivating and should include your main keyword. The next line of your ad should contain the single biggest benefit you offer to your customers. What sets your company apart from your competitors? That's what goes in your PPC ad. The 3rd line of your ad should contain a feature of your product or service or an offer – special discounted pricing or something free work well here. By making your ad specific to the keywords that your prospects will likely enter, you'll be well on your way not only to increasing clicks, but to turning clicks into cash as well.
4. Not securing high enough placement with your bids. All of the search engines use a slightly different method for determining the position for your ad. Google and Yahoo use a combination of ad relevancy (how relevant your ad is to the keywords you've bid on and the landing page you present to your visitors) and bid price. A big mistake I notice my clients making is not targeting their keywords tightly enough and specific enough to their product or service to allow them to bid high enough on those keywords to secure top placement on the search engines. It's estimated that 85% of all PPC clicks occur on ads that appear in one of the top 3 positions on the page. That means, if you aren't working hard to find keywords that are specific enough to your niche and not bidding high enough to secure a top spot, you are missing out on a good portion of the clicks that could be yours. Use a keyword tool such as Wordtracker to research keyword possibilities that you may not have considered. Look for a Keyword Effectiveness of 10 or greater – meaning that the keyword has sufficient search queries with the engines to result in significant traffic, without a lot of competitors bidding on the same keyword. When you place your campaign, use these keywords and bid high enough to secure a top spot, ensuring that the people searching for what you have to offer find your website – instead of your competitors.
5. Not testing your ads to determine their effectiveness. While there is a "formula" for crafting an effective PPC ad, slight changes – even changing one word – can have a dramatic impact on your click-through-rate (the percentage of people who click on your ad as compared with the number who see it). A mistake I see business owners making with their campaigns is to choose their keywords and then write only one PPC ad to display. All of the major search engines offer the capability of creating ad variations so that you can test different ad copy to determine what works best. This is known as "split testing" or "A/B" testing, as you are comparing the results of two different ads for the same keywords. Google will alternate the ads for you, and you'll easily be able to see which ad performs better by looking at your click-through-rate. When you find an ad that outperforms another, that ad becomes your "control" – or the ad to beat. Put the under-performing ad on "hold" and create another version, changing one or two words or possibly just the headline. Then test that ad against your control. This is a continual process – you are always trying to beat your control to improve your number of clicks. Not surprisingly, advertisers who test their ads in this method are more successful with PPC, as they tend to know their customers better and are able to target their prospects with captivating ads that turn into an increasing number of clicks – and customers – for them.
Pay-per-click advertising has enormous benefits for the small to mid-size business owner. Avoiding these 5 common mistakes will help you save money and quickly turn clicks into customers – and increased profits – when you launch your next PPC campaign.

Article Title: Repair Credit Fast Forces Rebecca to Fight "Nasty" Debt Collector!

Repair credit fast demands strategy, not a bunch of worthless dispute letters fired off by a credit disrepair company or uninformed mortgage person.
Recently, Rebecca from New Mexico contacted me about a collection account rejecting her attempts to buy a home. Rebecca admitted the account was hers but only after a few phone calls and faxes.
To Rebecca's consternation, this bad credit account was more than 12 year old. Rebecca never questioned whether she had to pay.
Instead, Rebecca questioned the $1435.26 the debt collector demanded she pay.
Turns out, zombie debt collectors had purchased this charged off debt for pennies and waited for Rebecca to complete a credit application.
Just as the debt collector expected, Rebecca's mortgage application triggered a call to action. The zombie debt collector had re-aged this ancient debt, reporting the debt as if it were current. That is, the debt appeared to be within the most recent 24 months and within the state's statute of limitations.
The debt collector knew three conditions to be true:
1.Rebecca eventually would apply for credit and would be told to satisfy the collection before new credit consideration. In this case, Rebecca wanted to buy a home.
2.Some uninformed mortgage person would tell Rebecca to pay off the collection before attempting to qualify for a mortgage.
3.The debt collector knew (most) mortgage people and even fewer consumers (including Rebecca) know anything about their rights including but not limited to Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (FDCPA) or Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
Most mortgage people unintentionally HELP debt collectors break the law and collect money to which they're not entitled.
Of course, debt collectors (in this regard) practice strategic debt collections – they break the law, playing very favorable odds.
On the flip side, Rebecca knew nothing about her rights. She knew ZERO about strategic credit repair.
Foolishly but expected, she was prepared to pay off this questionable collection, simply to go forward with grabbing the keys to her new home. Yep, debt collectors expect this behavior as well.
It was not the age of the debt that troubled Rebecca, whose memory took this alleged debt back more than 12 years during college.
Rebecca recalled defaulting on a credit card during college…a card with something like a $500.00 credit limit. Problem was, her credit reports reported she owed $1435.26 and a creditor she didn't recognize.
In this case, firing off a template dispute letter might have created a worse situation for Rebecca. This debt collector, who had dunned Rebecca and had begun calling her, now was on to Rebecca, instigated with a mortgage application allowing the mortgage person to pull her credit.
1.Firing off template dispute letters can and usually do have a damning effect on people naively sending them or when credit disrepair companies fire off rounds of dispute letters on your behalf.
2.Rebecca needed to prove the debt was outdated…without a doubt.
3.Rebecca needed to confirm debt collector (Furnisher) had illegally re-aged the alleged debt.
4.Rebecca needed to force debt collector to delete alleged account with all bureaus and provide written (& signed) verification for future reference in the (likely) event this debt collector sells the debt to yet another debt collector for the process to start over again.
Bad credit repair turned easy for Rebecca, whose proof encouraged the debt collector to delete the account with an apology and written verification.
Rebecca admitted she would've paid off the account if the amount owed had not been $1435.26. Of course, debt collectors bank on this behavior.
Here's something Rebecca (and probably you too) didn't know: paying off a debt collector does NOT improve your credit. As illogical as it is, this is what happens with Fair Isaac & Company's absurd credit scoring algorithm.
Please pay attention to these key points:
1.Do not simply fire off worthless dispute letters you download off some website.
2.Do not pay a credit disrepair company to fire off rounds of worthless dispute letters.
3.REAL credit repair demands strategy, not a bunch of worthless dispute letters. You must examine each bad credit account, determining whether the "furnisher" owns legal right to pursue collections.
4.Do not expect your mortgage person to know anything about credit repair – some might pretend they know credit repair, just as Rebecca's mortgage person advised her to throw away $1435.26. Worse, Rebecca's scores would've dropped. If your scores (after the ill-advised payoff) cannot sustain the score drop, your mortgage application will be rejected…all because of the blind leading the blind.
Repair credit fast requires you take a deep breath and a step back. Even if money is not the object, paying off alleged debt will not improve your credit…though you won't hear that from a credit disrepair company or uninformed mortgage person.

Article Title: Sarasota Real Estate - House Sellers & Real Estate Agents Demand Value!

Sarasota Real Estate brokerages face difficult decisions as house Sellers AND real estate agents demand (more) VALUE!
Of no surprise to you, the Internet is driving this inevitable change in real estate. As buyers and sellers grab the power the Internet affords them, choosing their real estate person is not just about who Cousin Marty recommends.
And real estate agents know it's not a given to do a great job and receive your blessing to friends, family & co-workers.
Referrals are Not a given!
Last week, I met with several real estate colleagues, all of whom were aware of a couple heated discussions taking place at Sarasota realtor "meetups" regarding the future of real estate. To my surprise, my colleagues were in agreement...and agreement rarely happens.
As more consumers turn to the Internet, many agents also are forced to make business decisions.
*How important is the "brokerage name" (that is the real estate company's name) to THEIR business success?
*What VALUE does the real estate company offer for the high commission split they demand?
*How much commission split is "fair" for the broker/brokerage company to take? Some brokers think $325.00 /transaction is a steal and realtors are crazy for not signing up. Yet, some of these brokers offer no value...even for the low(er) fee.
Increasingly, real estate agents are "out there" (virtually and literally) helping buyers and sellers. They are establishing their knowledge of their local market in person and on the Internet.
They are helping REAL people who have REAL real estate needs. Whether i person or from a distance, these agents are creating VALUE and TRUST by their knowledge, their responsiveness & their honesty about the local market.
That is, they're not blowing smoke about the value of your house just to score a listing.
They also aren't encouraging you to increase your offer just to score more commission.
In essence, these agents are branding themselves, not the brokerage company.
For both sellers and real estate professionals, the topic boils down to VALUE for the money.
For many Sarasota realtors, commission splits (that is, what % they earn and what % they hand to their brokerage/broker) have taken a front-and-center position as real estate changes. Today, more and more real estate licensees are standing up to brokers demanding high splits.
The brokerage name (apparently) means less and less today (and presumably even less tomorrow). According to these agents, they're not satisfied with:
1. Brokerage name. Realtors increasingly are not sensing value from big brokerage name as they once did. Of little surprise, the big name brokerage in your town is UNKNOWN to (most) people OUTSIDE your farm area. Most brokerages'(even big brokerages') online presence is pitiful (and easy to beat).
2. Office space. No longer is "floor time" or office space as appealing as it once was. Today, a licensee can equip a home office (or car/SUV for that matter) with the latest tech easily sufficient to accommodate a licensee's needs and wants...relatively inexpensive.
3. Support. From discussions, these agents define "support" in 2 ways:
A). Collegial support. Collegial support & interaction today and tomorrow, however, increasingly means "meetups" outside and beyond a brokerage's 4 walls...such as phone, email, texting, Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, etc. Not your idea of a "strategic counseling session?" Not really mine, either. It works, however, for many today and moving into tomorrow.
B). Broker support. An experienced (non-competing) broker who hasn't spread him/herself too thin can earn his/her split counseling/mentoring inexperienced licensees. However, many of these brokers, according to these agents, can't be reached by phone when the agent needs them.
4. Training. More updated, field-tested training can and does exist outside many brokerages. For instance, every realtor at the table agreed they HAD to go outside the brokerage to learn how to help homeowners avoid foreclosure (ie loan modifications and/or short sales). They had to find and create their own attorney, mortgage & tax professional contacts for referring homeowners who asked for help.
5. Lead Generation. The one important catalyst holding many high-split brokerages together today appears (from many discussions with licensees) are LEADS. Whether true or imagined, some agents who cannot generate their own leads must continue paying their broker's high splits.
Will big-name brokerages with their big advertising budgets convince realtors paying high commission splits to keep their licenses hanging on the wall?
Or will realtors throughout the country flee real estate companies demanding high commission splits. In the group of realtors sitting around the table last week, only two hold-outs remain tethered to the big-name brokerages. And they too are on their way out.
The VALUE (in their minds) is not there.
*They have to pay for everything (signs, advertising, photocopies, telephone, MLS & Association dues, biz cards, etc).
*They farm their area, getting out and meeting people, asking to help buyers, sellers & renters.
*They have to learn how to blog, write articles, make compelling videos, optimize content for search engines and people, answer questions on buyer and seller forums, etc. They do all the work (if) they want to build a real estate business.
No doubt in my mind, the "traditional" brokerage model faces intense scrutiny from sellers, buyers & real estate licensees. Sellers demand list agents justify the "normal" 6% broker commission. Agents demand the brokerage justify splits ranging from 20-50%. That is, a realtor doing all the work, earns a $1,000 paycheck (rather "commission") & the broker demands 20% ($200) to 50% ($500).
Less business today has top producing real estate agents to question high-commission splits. Is it worth it?
Sarasota real estate is changing for buyers, sellers & real estate professionals. More than ever, Sarasota real estate (inc. real estate throughout the country) is 100% about serving the needs of the CUSTOMER. Indeed, this topic will prompt discussion and change: How will consumers change real estate as we know it, as they are empowered more and more with Internet resources. Will real estate evolve to feature the brokerage or the individual agents at the brokerage? Will agents become more transient?

The therapy of hypnosis has been used for centuries to help people overcome a variety of illnesses and mental disorders such as schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, depression, anxiety syndromes, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and even mood swings. Illnesses such as arthritis, irritable bowel, lupus and other autoimmune diseases have been reportedly helped by hypnotic therapy practices as well.
Yet, some disreputable practitioners of hypnosis use their talents and skill in a more subversive and demented way, such as those who perform what is known as sissy hypnosis, a form of trying to hypnotize a man into acting the role of a woman in his mind. This practice is truly a despicable misuse of what could be an otherwise helpful practice to some.
Feminizing Men With Sissy Hypnosis
Some men may have a twisted desire to be more feminine like a woman, whether they are homosexual or heterosexual. These men may desire to live out their unfulfilled fantasies in some way in order to become the "sissy" that they have always dreamed they would be. These men may suffer from an identity disorder, as they may have always wanted to secretly become women for one of many reasons.
These men could have been abused as children, and now they are living in homosexual lifestyles as a result of that abuse. They could also be married men who desire to live out some kind of dark, demented fantasy to be a woman. Those who practice sissy hypnosis are not true professionals at all but a fringe group of pleasure seekers who want an erotic thrill.
Sissy hypnosis should not be considered as a viable therapy of any kind for anyone. This so-called hypnosis is really a deviant form of inducing repulsive thoughts into someone's mind for simple sexual pleasures. Sissy hypnosis often goes in the same category as those promoting bondage and sado-masochist forms of sexual "torture" techniques and other revolting ideas.
These practices are a sad fact of life in our modern times, yet they should be avoided by all people who seek a pure and moral life. With ideas such as these which abound in our landscape, it is imperative to try and protect children from practices such as sissy hypnosis, as much brainwashing in these matters is geared toward children.Pedophilia follows close on the heels of such practices as well, and even while there is freedom in the United States, practices such as this should not be tolerated, as they are beneficial for no one who participates in them.

If you have a certain function coming up and you're racking your brain, trying to come up with the perfect form of entertainment that will actually keep everyone's attention, why not try stage hypnosis? There are many hypnotists that specialize in stage hypnosis. Their fees vary so you should search around to find a hypnotist that is within your price range. The result, however, will undoubtedly be a great time had by all. Just make sure that someone brings a video camera.
The best part of stage hypnosis is seeing the people you know being hypnotized. If you've never seen a stage hypnosis show before, it's hilarious. The hypnotist will select a few people from an audience and will invite them to sit in a row of chairs that have been placed on stage. The hypnotist will then take the volunteers through the stage hypnosis steps until they are all in an entranced state. That's when the fun begins.
Sometimes, when the hypnotist has completed his stage hypnosis, there are a few people who are still conscious. The hypnotist will tell these people to go back to their seats as they aren't hypnotized. The ones who remain, the hypnotist will tell them to do certain things, usually to the enjoyment of the audience.
For instance, during a stage hypnosis act, the hypnotist will tell the participants that it is suddenly getting very cold in the room. In fact, the temperature is close to freezing. Of course, to everyone in the audience, the temperature hasn't changed, but to the people on stage it's suddenly unbearably cold. They will actually begin to shiver.
Stage hypnosis is usually tailored to the audience. For instance, the hypnotist can do a racy stage hypnosis show for a younger, college type crowd, or he can do a tame one for a family reunion. Imagine Aunt Jenny dancing the ballet in front of everyone, not knowing that she's even hypnotized.
Don't Forget The Video Camera
The importance of bringing a video camera is so that the ones being hypnotized can actually see themselves acting how they did. The reaction is usually one of astonishment as they'll have no recollection of the events. To them, they were hypnotized and then they woke up.
There are skeptics out there who say that stage hypnosis is fake and that the participants are all prepped before hand. Only the people on stage know for sure, however, if Aunt Jenny can't dance and she can't act, then that may give you some insight as to the authenticity of stage hypnosis.
