The market town of Uxbridge, Hillingdon, in the county of Middlesex, is located in the west of London in what is now the London Borough of Hillingdon. The name Uxbridge derives from the name of the Saxon Wuxen tribe, whose territory was bounded by the River Colne, which now forms the boundary between Uxbridge and Buckinghamshire.

Although Uxbridge was not mentioned in the Doomsday Book, by the end of the 12th century Uxbridge was given permission to hold a market every Thursday. By the mid-13th century Uxbridge had become large and prosperous enough to build a chapel dedicated to St Margaret. Over time this chapel was extended and enlarged to become the church that can still be seen at the top of Windsor Street. The associated burial ground can be seen at the bottom of Windsor Street, although it is no longer a burial ground but remains a grassed area where a war memorial now stands.

The market was the main source of prosperity for Uxbridge resulting in the building of a market house. This was rebuilt nearby in 1561 and again in 1788 by the building that still stands at the top of Windsor Street.

During the English Civil War, Uxbridge was an important garrison for Parliamentary Troops and was the site for an attempted peace negotiation, which took place in what is now the Crown and Treaty Pub.

Uxbridge within Hillingdon continued to prosper, both from the market and from coaching trade which resulted in many inns, alehouses and breweries opening to cater for them. However in the 19th century the agricultural market declined and was replaced by industry; the coaching trade declined after the opening of the railway station at West Drayton.

Rapid change came to Uxbridge in the 20th century when the Metropolitan line was extended to Uxbridge, with the existing station being opened in 1938. Many houses were built between the two world wars. Uxbridge also had an RAF base which was home to No 11 group RAF Fighter Commander during the Battle of Britain.

Much of old Uxbridge town centre was modernized in the 1960's and 1970's, with the first of two shopping centres opening at this time. Uxbridge in Hillingdon, now houses the main European offices of several international companies plus many other major employers. Brunel University is located on the outskirts of the town.

Uxbridge today is modern and contributes to the overall economy of Hillingdon. The city centre has many of the top retail stores as well as some of the best and largest companies in the world having a presence there. It also has many canals and is often compared to Venice! For travelers and tourists visiting Hillingdon, They will be well advised to spend at least a couple of days savoring the modern delights that Uxbridge has to offer. There is plenty of action to keep the young at heart entertained whilst the more refined amongst you will have plenty of light entertainment to keep you amused and help you while away the hours in an enjoyable fashion.

Article Title: Starting a Home Business Casually

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

When starting a home business, it's hard to know the exact figures, but I wonder how many people start it on a casual basis? Some certainly do, while for others the way to begin is by planning everything out carefully, leaving their paid employment and then focusing on getting the right business up and running as soon as possible.

Both ways are equally as good for getting started. But there is a lot to be said for starting in a more casual manner. Let's explore some of the benefits here.

For a start it gives you the opportunity to try out a home business without fully committing yourself. You still have all the legal requirements to meet with regard to tax and National Insurance of course, but you can start your business without having to think about quitting your regular job first.

The benefits of this are obvious. If you start a business and it fails, you would be left in a dire situation if you had given up your regular full time job to do it. But if you started it purely part time in the evenings and at the weekends, it wouldn't be such a huge problem if it fails. There is also the possibility that you would stand a better chance of success if you aren't focused on earning a set amount by a set time. If you know you have a full time salary coming in you can take your time, do things properly and ensure you get everything just right without the need to rush in and create an income quickly.

Some people find working in this way, casually, does have drawbacks as well – although it can depend on the type of person you are as to whether you are affected in this way or not. If you have the security of a full time salary coming in, you will always feel less inclined to work on your casual business, no matter how much you might want to do so. It is far easier to sit back and relax instead of working to develop your own business, because money is not a sticking point. This often leads to the casual home business never actually getting launched properly!

This does not affect everyone though. There are plenty of people who get up earlier in the mornings so they can spend an hour or so working on their own business before going off to work. In addition to this they also think about working on their business most evenings and at weekends. This does mean sacrificing some of their own free time, but in the end these people are usually the ones who end up with the successful home business.

As you can see there are some definite benefits to starting more casually and building up from there. It all depends on your current schedule of course, but starting part time is often much easier and definitely requires less planning. You can dive into your own business without having to sacrifice your current income. However it also means that you will struggle to dedicate the amount if time that is required to launch any new business successfully. Could working evenings and weekends in your new start up be the ideal route to success if you have a business idea ready and raring to go?

Redruth in Cornwall was a village until the 1700's when steam engines were used to take water out of the local mines, giving miners the opportunity to dig even deeper shafts to extract both tine and copper.

With the expansion in mining, Redruth grew considerably to become one of the major urban areas in Cornwall. However, mining declined and ceased operating in 1998. The remains of the mining industry are still evident with some of the old mining buildings still dotting the local landscape. These include the Pednadrea Chimney in the centre of Redruth and the nearby workings of Tolgus Tin, Gwennap Pit and the tourist attraction of the Cornish Mines and Engines and the nearby South Crofty Mine which is now owned by Western United Mines who are working to re-establish full scale mining operations to work this densely mineralised area. Cornish Mines and Engines can be found in nearby Pool.

The centre of the attraction features two magnificent examples of Cornish Beam Engines that were developed by the famous engineer Richard Trevithick. The engines were powered through the use of high pressure steam, as patented by Trevithick and were used to extract water from a depth of some 1500 feet below ground as well as raising men and ore from the mine. Trevithick lived in Penponds and his cottage is open every Wednesday. Admission is free of charge although donations are welcomed.

Situated to the rear of the Morrison's supermarket car-park (on Illogan Highway) is Taylor's Shaft which houses the Cornwall Industrial Discovery Centre which includes displays and the opportunity to walk through the boiler house, chimney and flue.

Miners were paid very little for their efforts and many died as a result of these activities through accidents or health-related problems. When mines laid off workers in the 1700's and 1800's, miners and their wives would take direct action through food riots. From the mid 1800's, food rioting diminished as wages improved and the local Police Force was better organised.

In the 1740's the area became the centre for Methodism in Cornwall when Charles Wesley, and later his brother (John Wesley) began preaching in the open to 1000's of locals. On one of the local granite heights "Carn Brea," their remains evidence of one of the oldest Neolithic hill-fort settlements within the area it's a site of about 46 acres and minerals were probably worked here starting from the Bronze Age.

With international mining competition, the decline in mining was inevitable and by the 1880's, over two-thirds of the local mining population had emigrated to South Africa, America and Australia.

Originally, Tin was obtained from deposits sound in streams with the iron oxide from such workings causing the water to turn a shade of red. This discoloration being a by-product of the separation of Tin and Copper from waste materials. This led to the naming of Redruth. Rhydruth literally means Ford (Rhyd) Red (Ruth).

The innovative engineering developed to ease the extraction of ores provided the world with an engineering legacy provided by the likes of Trevithick, Murdoch and Watt.

Today, Redruth relies mainly on tourism.

Famous people from Redruth, Cornwall include:

    Mick Fleetwood

    Rory McGrath

    Kristin Scott Thomas

If you are visiting Cornwall you must visit Redruth and discover the delights it has to offer tourist and visitors alike!

Oxford in England, UK nestles between the heights of Christmas Common to the east on the M40 towards London and to the west the glorious Cotswolds. Driving from London on the motorway travellers are greeted by the most amazing panoramic views of the county of Oxfordshire as they drop six hundred feet into the county itself.

The idea that Oxford is full of nasally accented young English students "sent up" from the shires and foreign students studying to the highest level is one that is conjured in the minds of most people. Whilst the city is crowded with colleges, dating back to the twelfth century, the area has been driven to prosperity by successful commercial businesses such as BMW at Plant Oxford on the ring road which circumnavigates the centre, the Cowley factory was home to such household names as the Morris Oxford, the Bullnose Morris, the mini, first time around and the new one in production now. The first mass produced car rolled off the production line in the mid 1920's and produced a huge demand for labour which has held up ever since. Many diverse and interesting local businesses are also prosperous because of the giant car plant.

The first historical evidence of the town's existence is that derived from the oxen fording points at shallow crossings along the River Thames from which comes the name. Post Roman development has always indulged scholastic endeavour, coupled with religious devotion. Oxford city centre boasts the smallest cathedral in the country built by the Normans under William I which is situated in Christ Church College, accessible to all and host to many academic and non-academic activities alike. This is also the only cathedral in the world built in a college. From this sprang the predominantly ecclesiastical colleges built by rich bishops, shunning women who were only allowed to be granted degrees after 1920 and not allowing lecturers to marry. Each of the thirty five colleges has its own charm and grace, steeped history and famous students, they can all boast the most of course. Tensions between the city and colleges have been named "town and gown" and have surfaced on occasion throughout history and still remain a focal discussion point today.

Oxford straddles the confluences of the Cherwell and Thames rivers, the Cherwell also being known as the Isis. The past is no better represented than by Carfax Tower from Saxon times casting a view at the top across the city and down the pedestrian Cornmarket. As to the colleges, most famous names include Magdalen, Balliol, Christ Church, Exeter, Hertford, Jesus, Keble, Merton, Pembroke, Trinity, Wadham and Ruskin, to name but a few. Not to forget St Hilda's the last single sex, in this case women's college to go co-ed.

Although an old city which can trace its origins back to Roman times and beyond, modern life gripped the city when it became the back drop to the very famous Harry Potter films, the Hogwarts School locations in the film Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone include the Bodleian Library and Christ Church college cathedral. The recent Alice's Adventures in Wonderland have also been filmed in the city.

For the more serious tourist visiting England, the newly updated and magnificent Sheldonian museum plays host to thousands of British and international artefacts complementing Pitts River museum and the Ashmolean.

Oxford, based in Oxfordshire, truly is an English city of dreaming spires and commerce, a cultural and educational centre, a monument to modern living within an ancient labyrinth of our past.

If you have an internet business you need to have some way of receiving payments that suits your needs perfectly. One of the best ways to do this is to start using PayPal.

You have probably heard of PayPal already – it is one of those websites most of us know about, even if we don't actually have an account. But if you are going to start making money online in an internet business, you should definitely find out more about it, because it is one of the prime ways that many small business owners receive payment for their products and services.

The best thing about PayPal is its simplicity. Let's say you have decided to start writing for various clients online. If you have PayPal as your method of getting paid, you can ask the client to submit 50% of your total fee via PayPal before you begin. Once you receive the money you can deposit it into your bank account and begin work. All you have to do is give them the email address associated with your PayPal account and they can transfer the money to you there and then.

You can even issue invoices directly through PayPal if you wish. Some people like doing it this way; others create an invoice in Word or Excel and add the email address to which funds should be paid to the bottom of it. Both ways work the same essentially – the money is paid into the PayPal account associated with the email address you give them.

Another bonus with PayPal is the ability to receive funds in more than one currency. For example many people online work in US dollars. Even if you live in the UK you may decide to charge people in US dollars. All you have to do is convert the money once it arrives in your account and you can then transfer it over as normal.

Of course there are charges involved with using the account, so it pays to be aware of these before you sign up for one. The good news is that you aren't charged for withdrawing money, so this is one distinct benefit to bear in mind. When you receive a payment from someone else however, you will be charged for receiving that money. This amounts to a 20p flat fee per transaction, plus a percentage of the total amount you receive. This percentage depends on how much you receive each month in total, so if you end up bringing in £1,500 a month or more, you can apply to get a lower percentage rate.

Many sellers and home workers have PayPal accounts that enable them to receive payments for the work that they do. Most sites offering work or payment for work do use PayPal so it is one of the easiest and most versatile sites you can have in this sense.

With a website payments standard account, people can shop on your internet website and pay you money either using their own PayPal account or any credit card. The good thing about creating a website payments standard account is that it is free! You only get charged a small percentage. It will cost you 20p per transaction plus 3.4% of the amount transacted, anytime somebody pays you online.

If you think it could work for you and your internet business, go to PayPal's website now and read up more about it. You might find it is just what your online business needs.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

People often ask if EBay is still viable as a business platform. Some people habitually say there is now no money left in eBay. You cannot start a new business on the site and hope to be successful at doing so. There is too much competition, too many sellers, too many low priced products and so on and so forth.

But How Much of this is Really True?

The truth is that eBay is just as much a place for a viable business as any other retail place online or offline. The test is whether you have the ability to create that business yourself or not. Plenty of sellers have started their own business selling on eBay and gone up against plenty of competition and made it a success. If they can succeed, it is possible for lots more people to do the same.

The secret of whether certain people succeed or not lie in how much they focus on their own business. For example if they have a very small profit margin, poor products or zero marketing skills, they are laying themselves open to failure. If then, their competition reduces their prices by a small margin; they are effectively right out of business.

Too many sellers also rely on nothing but price to get them sales. Prices are important but they are not the be all and end all of business success. In fact if you focus on making your prices as low as possible you stand a far greater chance of going out of business – whether that is on eBay or anywhere else.

The clue here is to think about whether you can compete in another area. For example some sellers distance themselves from their competition in the area of quality. Others focus on being different in terms of the product range they sell. Others might package up several things together rather than selling everything separately. This is just some examples but there are lots of ways in which selling differently can make you stand out and survive.

The truth is that as long as eBay is there and buyers love to buy from it then sellers can use it. There are possible businesses to build and good money to be made long term. Perhaps then it is not a question of whether the site and the business are viable – it is a question of whether the seller is viable. Unfortunately not everyone sees it that way; some failed sellers would rather focus the blame for their failure on the site and on their products, rather than on their own poor decisions.

Every business has rough times and every business can take a while to become successful. Perhaps some people are simply not cut out to work for themselves. If they were determined to be successful on eBay they would not fold at the first signs of failure. Instead they would redouble their efforts and achieve more because of it.

Which group do you fall into? Because the truth is, if you want to build a successful eBay business, you need to be able to work hard and have plenty of determination to succeed.

Article Title: Do Cheap Low Cost Franchises Exist?

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Many franchises are very expensive and out of the realm of possibility for many people. Franchises costing £50k or more are not unusual by any means. However, for most people starting a business for the first time, sums of money like this are well beyond their reach.

So do cheap franchises exist? Are you on your own if you want to start up a low cost business on a shoe string budget?

The truth is that all franchises will cost you a certain amount of money. You have to be prepared to pay this out if you want a business with a well thought out and developed business model.

Franchises have their pros and cons but you also need to be sure about your reasons for buying into one. A proportion of the money involved buys you the right to use the name associated with the franchise. You'll also get a lot of back up and support as well, so bear this in mind when you are looking at the cost.

But let's get back to the subject of cheap franchises and whether they exist. A search on a website recently for the purposes of researching this article found that the lowest amount you could search for was 'below £15,000'. The upper limit on franchises was above £75000 so you can see there is a huge difference between the two.

Most notably there are franchises that enable you to work at home which means that you can forget about the need for premises. Internet franchises are also available and it is these kinds of categories that usually will provide cheaper opportunities for bargain hunters. A price of £10,000 for an internet franchise is certainly a lot more affordable than one for £70,000 plus and a home run business usually has much lower setup costs and ongoing overheads.

But don't be fooled into thinking all cheaper franchises are easier to handle and work with. All businesses involve a degree of hard work and commitment. You might also find you do not have as much freedom to work with a franchise as you have managing your own business. You cannot dictate how developments progress in quite the same way, so you need to consider all your options before choosing your ideal franchise.

Never buy an affordable franchise just because of its price tag. Only ever choose a business opportunity that makes sense and you can see why and how it would make money. Interrogate the franchisor and be prepared to walk if you do not get the right answers to all your questions.

Not everyone is suited to franchises. Some people might find it hard to work within the rigid outlines of a franchise. You might prefer to have a much freer handle on how the business operates and grows. You might not like the idea of having to prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports.

It's good to know that some cheap franchises do exist. Don't assume you have found the ideal opportunity just because you've tripped over a low cost franchise that suits your pocket. Instead, do your research and find a business opportunity that has a USP (unique selling point) which makes it powerful and full of potential. Sometimes a low cost franchise might have more potential than one costing double or even triple the price!

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Managing an internet business? Your typical day might start like this. You turn on your computer and make a cup of coffee while you are waiting for it to boot up. When you return, you access your emails and check to see if you have any urgent business communication from clients. Once that is done you go onto the internet for the purpose of doing some business research and this is when you start get distracted!

Oh but look, there is your Twitter page waiting for you to sign in and tweet about what you are doing. It will only take a few seconds to get that done. And you might as well have a quick look at the latest news headlines while you are online. It is amazing how distracted one can become just reading the news!

Before you know it an hour has gone by – during which time you should have been working, managing your internet business, but instead you have just wasted the hour. Now you are an hour behind and you are panicking that you won't complete your workload before the end of the day.

Could you see this in your future? It might become a reality if you want to start running an internet business from home, but there are strategies you can use to cope with all the distractions.

Let's face it we all know the internet is capable of sucking huge amounts of time out of our day. This might be okay in some circumstances but if you are aiming to run and grow a home business you need to ensure that your clients and suppliers come first. Temptation is always there however when you work on the computer and there is no one to monitor your every move, so it pays to develop ways to be strict with yourself.

Emails are a necessity if you work online. This is particularly the case if you correspond with clients and suppliers via email, as it is one of the easiest ways to get in touch with people quickly and efficiently. The trouble is emails can also be a major source of distraction, so you might want to limit the amount of times you check your emails. Every time you check them it disrupts your concentration and flow, and it could take a while to get started again. Perhaps the best way to do this would be to check your emails twice daily only.

The internet is another potential distraction that requires a lot more discipline to prevent it from encroaching on your working life. You will have to be very strict with yourself to ensure you don't go into websites that you know will take valuable time away from your day.

Visiting a site just to check something very quickly can turn into a prolonged visit if you spot something else you want to read. Limit these visits to your lunch hour or to a tea break, set an alarm for ten minutes ahead of time or whenever you need to stop and get back to work. This should help you to become more aware of the time you are wasting.

In the end an internet business can provide various sources of income for those who are ready for it. But being online all the time can also work against you, and it is vital to ensure this doesn't happen to you.

Are you going to allow all the entertainments and news online to constantly distract you from running a successful internet business from home or are you going to develop strategies to help you cope with all the distractions?

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

However fit and healthy we home business owners are, there might come a times when we fall ill. Whether it is the common cold or something more serious, when we happen to work for ourselves there are advantages and disadvantages of being your own boss.

For a start it is good that we no longer have to worry about calling in and explaining to our boss why we won't be in that day. There are no more feelings of guilt - no matter how justified we might be in taking a day off. We are adults now, in charge of our own destiny and we can manage our own work around our illness.

However this has its downside as well. The chances are that there will be no one else to hand our workload over to as many home business owners work by themselves; much as we would be able to if we were working in an office or other location where there are other members of staff to turn to. We have to cope with our workload ourselves, which either means we have to work through feeling poorly or rearrange our day so we can work later on when we will hopefully feel a bit better.

One of the main problems with working from home is that we are working for ourselves – and thus there is no such thing as sick pay. So we really have to work hard to make sure we are prepared for times when our health may become poorly. For example, if we can put away a small percentage of our home business profits, as a small insurance policy, we can rest easy when we do need to take some time to recover.

But what happens about deadlines? What can we do when we have a deadline to meet and we aren't well enough to deal with it? Once again we must build in some extra time in all cases. For example we need to make sure that we allocate enough time so that we can be on target to finish a job nice and early every single time. This way if anything goes wrong, we can rest in the knowledge that we have built in some extra time to fall back on. And in truth, if we have a reputation of hitting the deadline every time, not many clients would be hard pushed to give a little extra breathing room on that rare occasion when illness catches us.

The good news is that we don't have to stick to a timetable either. For example you may feel better halfway through the day, once you have caught up on some sleep. In an employed position you wouldn't be able to go in part way through the day. But when you are self-employed you can start your day a bit later and hopefully achieve a lot and feel better for doing so.

In truth there are good and bad points when you have your own home business and you fall ill. But in general you do have more freedom, and a little forward planning goes a long way in situations like these.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Every good home based business starts from a single idea, no matter how large it becomes in the end. You may use that idea and run with it all your life without making many changes at all, or alternatively you might end up changing it and adapting it along the way, fine tuning it until it starts generating serious profits.

But what should you do if you cannot find that clever idea to launch you in the right path to begin with? Should you just rack your brains until the best idea comes to you? Or are there on the internet sources where there are many clever ideas you can investigate further?

There are many different ways you can come up with some great business ideas that you can manage from home. Have you ever thought of looking online to see what other people are doing? You need to keep your distance in some ways, so you can find the information you need without being sold anything in the process! There are plenty of websites which claim to sell you the best working from home opportunities ever, but many of them are just scams, so be careful!

The best places to go for ideas are forums that have been especially setup for home business owners. Generally speaking, if the website and contributors are not trying to sell you anything you can be a bit more trusting of the information.

For example, let's say someone appears on a forum singing the praises of a particular money making system. But upon closer inspection they happen to be selling this same system in their forum signature. It could be they are making it sound better than it is to make a few sales for themselves. But if no such link or sale is apparently being made, you can trust that person a bit more. Hopefully he (or she) is giving the information without any personal gain to be made.

The truth is that if you are looking for a way of making money from home you need to think seriously about what will suit you. Don't try to invent something completely different either; it can work just as well to find an idea that is already being used by other people and modifying it so that it caters for your market place.

There are plenty of people who make a good living by running internet businesses, providing online support, writing content for other websites or even just running a computer repair business.

The point is that there are LOTS of ideas that can be turned into profitable home based businesses – you just need to find the best one for you. Choose the one that appeals to your talents and to your abilities, because that is sure to be the one that brings out the best in you.

One final tip – don't stop your search until you find something ideal for you. And don't underestimate the time this search can take. The wait will be worth it when you eventually find your ideal home business.

It is getting towards that time again when the days are longer, the weather is brighter and warmer, and we can hopefully enjoy some sun in the garden, between the rain showers. These showers have been far and few this year and we have been spoilt by the regular sunshine. This is a great time of year for the home business owners, because it means we can get outside and enjoy some fresh air when we need a break.

Running a business from home can be very isolating, because you are constantly at home working, and you often have no need to go out at all. You can certainly get exercise without going outdoors, thanks to things like exercise bikes and now the Wii as well, but there is no substitute for getting some fresh air on a daily basis. It does your mind and body the world of good to spend some time in the garden.

Fortunately with today's technology we can enjoy working outdoors easier than we would have been able to in the past. For example if you have a laptop and Wi-Fi you can go outside in the garden, and work on battery power for a few hours. Provided you are sitting in the shade you can do so perfectly easily and have the convenience of the internet to use as well.

A lot depends on the type of work you do of course, but most computer based work can easily be done outside if you have Wi-Fi installed in your home. You may not want to spend all day out in the garden, but you can enjoy having a few hours outside when it is the right temperature. Not too hot and not too cold. Apart from anything else you will get some sun and fresh air, and also a change of scenery. This alone is good for your health as working in your home office all the time can be very tiring, repetitive and dull.

One thing you do have to be careful of however is that you can end up being distracted from what needs to be done. Your neighbour might think you are relaxing and pop over for a coffee when you really need to be getting some work done. You might end up sunbathing when you have a deadline to meet. Alternatively you might find those weeds in your flowerbeds a bit of a distraction, and you might have to pull those out before you do anything else. If you tend to be a bit like this you have to be aware of the possibility that you will end up getting less done if you leave your home office.

If it suits you to work outside for an hour or two in the morning before coming back indoors again, try it out. Alternatively you might want to get plenty done in the early hours of the day before enjoying some of the afternoon sunshine instead. If the bulk of your work is done before you head outside, you can relax a bit more and still get something else done at the same time.

So consider the outdoors this summer, make the garden your office and enjoy the weather whilst it lasts!

For every person who is currently considering getting started as a home worker, there is someone else who is already there. But does this make those who are already doing it experts on the matter?

When you want to learn about something new one of your first instincts is probably to engage with someone who knows about the subject. This could be in the form of a book, a face to face meeting or discussing the subject on a website. But should you take everything they say to be true?

In reality it is a good idea not to trust everything that you hear. In researching for this article I came across an interview with someone who had been a freelance writer for some ten years. His advice was not to expect to make any money for the first four years. And yet on plenty of other sites writers were saying they were making a decent income within a few weeks or months of starting – some of them on a full time basis as well.

This simple example just goes to show that it is possible to get very conflicting advice. It is a good idea to get advice from several people and different sources when you are researching your own potential home working career. Make sure that you don't listen to one person and one person alone. You must make sure you read about the experiences of business people in order to get the best picture of what things could be like for you. Always use your own judgment to see whether you can ascertain what will work and what will not.

By using a range of sources you can get a more accurate picture of what to expect. If you were to read about that person who took four years to make a profit from freelance writing, it could put you off forever. But as we have seen, there are many other people who have found a faster route to success. This would make you question what that other person was doing in order for them to take so long to succeed. Don't let this put you off reading about other people's experiences though. Simply take each one as you find it, and remember that it represents their experience and theirs alone. All that matters is that you are using this information to help you gauge what to expect when you first get started.

The worst thing would be to let one person's advice put you off trying something that could be a success for you. If you come across negative advice, make a point of finding the opinions of other people who are working in the same area. Do they have similar points of view or are they very different? If everyone is negative then you should rethink things. But if there is just one lone negative voice, don't let it put you off.

The City of Southampton is an ancient city with evidence of settlement going back to the Stone Ages though it's officially recognised as having been settled in the year 43AD, the year the Romans invaded Britain. Having been occupied for nearly 2,000 years, Southampton has plenty of history to discover. Visitors to this ancient city will regularly come across buildings that are hundreds of years old and one of those best known landmarks is the impressive Bargate.

    What is Southampton's Bargate?

The Bargate was built as part of the old city walls of Southampton, back in the days when Southampton was a fortified city to protect it against attack from outside. The Bargate itself acted as a gate to the city and it was in fact the main point of entry for anyone coming into Southampton from the north.

    A History of Southampton's Bargate

The Bargate in Southampton was built around the year 1180AD, during Norman times. This was an important era in Britain's history and followed the Norman Conquest that began in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings, nearly 100 miles east of Southampton. Southampton itself grew in importance because it was the main port gateway between Winchester (which was at that time the capital of England), and Normandy in France.

    Construction of Southampton's Bargate

The Bargate is built of stone and flint, and since it was first constructed in 1180 it's seen a few additions and alterations. These include a two storey extension on the south side of the Bargate near the end of the 13th century. This also added four windows to naturally light the upstairs room, because of course they didn't have any kind of electric lights in those days!

If you look at the Bargate from the south side you'll see there's a statue standing in an archway. Originally this was a wooden statue of Queen Anne, but it was later replaced by a stone statue of King George III. The Bargate was originally connected to Southampton's city walls so as to create an impenetrable line of defence. The separation was finally made in the 1930's when city planners needed to make more space for new buildings and roads around the Bargate.

What was Southampton's Bargate Used For?

The Bargate was obviously used as a gateway into the city of Southampton so as to protect the city from invading forces, but beyond the obvious it has actually served several other uses too. The room that was constructed during the extensions that were made to the Bargate in the 13th century was used as the city's guildhall until the 1770's. Then from 1836 onwards, when Southampton's police force was established, it was used as a prison. During the Second World War the Bargate was again used by Southampton police, as their headquarters.

    The Bargate Today

Today the Bargate is one of Southampton's best known and recognisable landmarks and has been seen as the Southampton City Council logo for many years. After a period of being closed to the public, visitors can now go inside the Bargate's upper room again, and visit the Bargate Monument Gallery. This is an art gallery that features the work of local and emerging artists and a visit to this lovely little gallery allows you to see not only some works of art, but gives you the opportunity to experience the inside of Southampton's most famous landmark.

When you do visit the Bargate consider what this historical monument has lived through during the 830 years since it was first constructed!

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

For any home business, promotion is extremely important no matter what kind of entrepreneur you are. If you don't get yourself out there and tell people what your home business can do for them, you won't be very likely to succeed!

The problem is that, like most home businesses, you will very often find you have a small marketing budget to work with. You need to promote your business but you don't have the huge budgets that most big companies have got. This is why social media could provide you with the answer that you need.

For a start there are lots of social networking sites out there that you can use, so you stand a good chance of finding some that you like. Of course you also need to pick the best ones that your audience is likely to be using. YouTube is good if you have a visual element to your product, or if your clients are likely to be interested in watching videos about it.

Similarly up to the minute tweets can be sent via Twitter and it can be very easy to build up an audience here if you take your time to offer worthwhile advice and not just a sales pitch the whole time.

As you may have guessed it is a good idea to take a look round before launching yourself and your home business into the social media arena. For example if you choose the wrong site you could end up spending a lot of time doing things that aren't going to get you in front of the right people. Do some research and see which social media sites your audience is most likely to use. It may still require some trial and error before you get it right, but it is certainly worth doing.

Another thing to think about is the fact that you shouldn't expect too much, too soon, with social media. It is possible to get reasonable results and bring in new potential customers and interest reasonably quickly, but don't expect orders immediately. Instead look on it as a long term venture because this is where the real benefits lie.

It pays to get involved in promoting yourself using social media, but you do need to go about it in the right way. For example most social media sites do not permit you to indulge in blatant self promotion. Even those that do, such as Twitter, prefer you not to promote in every tweet you send. Most people understand that a balance is a good idea. It pays to tweet worthwhile advice as regularly as you can, and only insert a link to your site or blog for every few other tweets you release. It is all a matter of balance so bear this in mind and don't alienate your readers.

There is no doubt that your home / small business would benefit from using social media on a regular basis. If you don't do it already you should consider making a start today and spend maybe half an hour every day on social media sites specifically to promote and grow your home business.

If you are good at managing cash flow in your home business it will not hurt to do it a bit better. If you are bad you need to change your ways now – at least you do if you dream of becoming a successful home business owner.

There are plenty of people working from home right now all across the country, but most are struggling. Working from home sounds like a dream come true and for many people that is exactly what it is, but there are downsides too. You must be able to manage money properly if you want to be successful. If you can't, you will soon run into cash problems that could possibly lead to the end of your business!

Think about how you get paid when you work for someone else. At the end of every week or month you will receive a pay slip that tells you what your gross earnings were. It will also tell you what has been deducted by way of Income Tax and National Insurance. So you get what is left and you don't have to worry about setting any money aside for deductions yourself.

When you work for yourself things are very different indeed. You will receive all the payments that are due to you and you have to keep track of all the sales you make and all the outgoings that you have. And when you complete your accounts each year you will find out how much tax you owe. Instead of paying it in a regular sum each month, you will have to put it away and be ready to pay it out when the tax payments falls due.

But it isn't just tax that you need to be aware of. You also need to keep a constant eye on your cash flow if business slows or increases quickly. If things are already tight financially there is a bigger chance that you will run into problems if things go quiet or even if business booms! Try and build yourself a little cash cushion that will aid you when the unexpected happens.

You can see that having good cash skills are needed – essential in fact – when you run your own business. If you don't have these skills you cannot hope to maintain a sound enterprise.

You need to know exactly what income you have still to come in. Do you have invoices that clients have not yet paid? Chase them up – you have a right to be paid and you need to get tough on this. If you don't people will see you as someone who doesn't need to be paid straightaway – and that in turn can lead to bigger problems down the road.

There are many different strategies you can use to stop the funds drying out when you run a business from home. Educate yourself as much as you can, have a plan and strategy to improve your cash flow and find out different ways you can get better at what you do. Money is the key to a successful home business in so many different ways.

For nearly 2000 years Southampton has existed as a town and later a city, whose fortunes have always been closely linked with its port and docks. Going back to Roman times, Southampton's prime coastal location has meant it's been used as a port for trading, and later as a successful cruise ship terminal too. The interesting history of Southampton port is described here in more detail…

    Birth of Southampton Port

Although it's believed the area of Southampton has been inhabited since the stone age, the first major settlement, and establishment of the town, came with the Romans in 43AD. They liked the strategic position of Southampton and began using it as a trading port for the inland city of Winchester.

When the Romans abandoned the town around the year 410 the Anglo-Saxons came in and built a new and larger town, but it wasn't until after the Norman Conquest in 1066 that Southampton Port really began to develop and prosper.

The Growth of Southampton and the Port

When the port became busier following the Norman Conquest the town began to grow too. More and more people were attracted to live here, moving from the countryside in search of work in the growing town. This had a knock-on effect as more homes, shops and other buildings were constructed to serve everyone's needs.

Southampton Castle was one structure that was built in the 12th century as Southampton Port began to grow, and by the 13th century Southampton had become one of Europe's most important ports. It was particularly popular for the import of French wine and the export of English-made cloth and wool.

    Shipbuilding in Southampton

Southampton was the entry point for the Black Death into England in 1348, but despite this terrible plague, raids, attacks and wars, Southampton and its port continued to prosper over the following centuries.

From the 1400s onwards Southampton's status as a port town was taken one step further and a flourishing ship building industry began. This included one of the world's largest wooden ships of its time, the Grace Dieu. The Grace Dieu was the flagship of Henry V and was built between 1416 and 1418 here in Southampton as a warship to fight the Genoan carracks. It seems the ship never went to war though and was laid-up in the River Hamble just outside Southampton where it was struck by lightning and burned. The bottom part of the wreck still lies in the river to this day and you can actually see parts of it during a very low tide.

Major Events in the History of Southampton Port

As if all of the above wasn't enough history for Southampton Port, there was far more still to come! One significant piece of history is that Southampton can be considered the birthplace of the New World because it was from here that the Mayflower set sail in 1620 with the Pilgrim Fathers onboard.

The Southampton Docks Company was formed in 1835 and the first docks at Southampton were opened in 1842. This marked the start of another important era in Southampton's history that included the sailing of the RMS Titanic in 1912; a terrible tragedy for the town because about a third of those who died in the sinking of the Titanic were from Southampton. By the 1930s about half of the passenger ships that left the UK departed from the docks at Southampton, and Southampton docks became the home of Cunard and their famous cruise liner, the RMS Queen Mary. In addition to the passenger ships there were of course millions of tons of cargo leaving from Southampton docks too.

Through many ups and downs across the nearly 2000 years of history of Southampton port, the port continues to flourish to this day and remains a very important part of the history and culture of Southampton.

Amersham, formally known as Elmodesham in the Doomsday Book, was a Roman settlement at Mantles Green (on the Aylesbury end of the High Street). Amersham is actually 2 towns! There is Amersham on the Hill, which is the new town, founded around the railway and Old Amersham.

    History of Amersham

Amersham Old Town was mainly built in the 17th and 18th century, though the streets are no longer cobbled, you still get a real feel of what it was like at that time. There are several very good pubs and restaurants, but at one time the woman of the house brewed the ale and she would hang a green bush up outside the house to let everyone know that the ale was ready to drink!

A small museum is situated in the town it has loads of old photographs showcasing the history of Amersham. Copies of the photographs can be ordered. There are examples of tools used in local trades Blacksmith, Wheelwrights and Chair makers, the women and children worked at home making black lace (particularly in the Victorian period) and plaiting straw, which was taken to Luton to make into hats. The museum has an herb garden, both for culinary and medicinal use; you can sit outside and enjoy the sights and fragrance of the garden.

The river Misbourne flows through the Old Town, but it is hardly more than a stream, which can dry up for long periods of time. This is a chalk stream which disappears underground only to reappear some distance later. During the reign of King John a charter was given to Amersham to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. There is a small market held under the arches of the market hall in Old Amersham a couple of times a week. Whilst Amersham on the Hill boasts a market on Tuesdays which closes Sycamore road.

The charter fair is still held in Old Amersham on the 19th and 20th of September, it runs the length of the High Street and Broadway, the Old Town is then closed to through traffic. The fair has been held every year for over 800 years even through 2 world wars! If the fair misses a year then they lose the charter. There have been several attempts to have the fair moved by a few local residents, which seems a shame to end an amazing tradition just so they don't have the noise and disruption on 2 nights a year?

Amersham on the Hill contains most of the shops, the well known high street brands, banks and building societies. The station is at the end of the Metropolitan line and is also on the Chiltern line, so it is really easy to get a train into either Baker Street or Marylebone stations in London. The Chiltern line also goes to Aylesbury and then on to Birmingham.

Old Amersham is full of antique shops, exclusive boutiques with plenty of coffee shops, pubs and restaurants. This creates an interesting and pleasant walk around the town, if you prefer to just sit and watch the world go by there are pavement tables outside the coffee shops or you can sit in the memorial gardens for peace and quiet.

When will your new business start making profits? This is one of the most important questions you can ask yourself as a home business owner. In fact it should be one of the first questions you ask before you even start to think about quitting your job and making the decision to work from home full time in the first place. So let's see if we can provide some guidance to this important question.

Firstly it is important to recognise that no two home businesses are the same. While some may take only a very short time to make it into profit, others may take months or even years!

It is vital to ensure that you gauge your own time estimates on the pessimistic side, because you may be funding your existence for a long while on savings before decent profits start coming in. This also depends on how you start. If you are working from home part time and you have another job to help keep the money coming in, there won't be as much pressure on you to make profits as quickly as possible. Obviously the sooner your business starts to generate a profit the better, but it doesn't matter if you end up taking a while when this is not your sole source of income.

If you launch into a home business full time though, you should be sure you have enough money put by to cover the period when your home-based business will not be in profit. This should protect you from the embryonic stage when instead of monies coming in you are required to invest your savings!

Research can help you to figure out how long your business might take to start bringing money in for you. Look into the lives of other people who are doing a similar venture to you and see how long it took them to start making profits. Join some forums and ask direct questions if you can. You don't need to know how much they are earning – the information you need is regarding time rather than actual income, so most people should be helpful.

You can probably see why it will pay you to gauge your earnings pessimistically rather than optimistically. You also need to consider your own situation and business plan rather than just going on what other people tell you as every new venture has some unique characteristics. The more information you have, the better you will be able to figure out when you are likely to start move into profitability.

Many people try to start a home business in their spare time while they are still bringing in a full time income from employment. However much they may dislike their full time job, they know it is covering all the bills. It may also provide a certain amount of disposable cash to fund the new business. This all leads to a more positive start for a new business, because there is no pressure for it to succeed quickly.

And of course, the less you have to worry about the business bringing in an income, the more likely it is that it will do so. If you are panicking because there is no money coming in, you cannot hope to concentrate on gaining new customers and growing your sales.

Teens are too old to be babysat, but they still need your parental guidance. You have to know what they are up to and who their friends are. If you think that you have no problem with your teens because they are glued to the computer all day, you better beware. There's online mischief you'll never know about, unless you have your video security extended to their rooms.

Teens and the Dangers Lurking in the Net

Young people are spending more time on their PCs. First, they are onto games, but later on they might stumble onto pornographic or gambling sites. Before you know it, your teens will be getting deeply involved in immoral activities and might be meeting unsavory characters online. Without video security, you can't catch what's streaming on their computer screens, and you'll never be able to nip the habit or the danger in the bud.

Teens can get information and they can seek answers to questions they are afraid to ask their parents. But the danger lurking here are the false information available to lure teens to sex and illegal drugs. They also meet dubious friends online in chat rooms, and sometimes meet their online friends for an eyeball. As a parent you also have to educate your children on the dangers lurking in the Internet, not just rely on video security and online filters.

It's understandable that you can't always be with your teenagers. You got a 9-6 job Mondays to Fridays and they have to be in school. The best thing you can do to keep them safe is to give the following advice:

    * They shouldn't be meeting people they met online.

    * If they have to meet their new friend, let them bring along their friends, not just one or two.

    * Let them inform you where they are going and what time they are supposed to be home.

    * Don't let them meet their new online friends in unfamiliar territory.

    * Warn them not to give away personal information - home telephone numbers, credit card numbers, and their mobile phone numbers.

    * Let them inform the person they are meeting that you know about the date and the place they are going to meet.

    * Warn them that pictures don't tell a complete story about the person.

    * Ask your teens that they meet the person in a public place where there are lots of other people and video security.

If your teens judge your interference troublesome, have a heart-to-heart talk with them and explain that you are always after their happiness and safety. Cite examples of unfortunate events that happened to young people - you can get several from newspapers and online news. If you can have the chance to meet the new friend, get a background check. It's better to be nosey than sorry.

    Other Safety Measures

Perhaps your wired kids and teens will resist the order to place all computers in a designated family room. But this is the next best thing you can do to ensure you can keep an eye on them. With other family members around like video security, your teens will have to knock off some online activities like looking up hate literature, how to make bombs and other dangerous information.

One perfect recipe to keep your children in line is to let them know you're always there for them. Hugging them a lot more often may be cheesy, but they actually love it and they can feel you really mean it when you say you love them. They'll understand why you have made sure that your home video security does not stop at the main door.

Article Title: Surveillance Cameras Talk Back

Surveillance cameras watching you are creepy enough. But when they start talking to you, you start having that twilight zone feeling. Now, they have surveillance cameras that convey the voices of law enforcement authorities over the ether. It is the latest development in surveillance technology and one that presents some interesting questions.

    Wired For Sound

These new surveillance cameras are wired for sound. In effect, they give law enforcers the ability to broadcast to the areas being watched. These talking cameras are the latest advance in a field of technology that has grown by leaps and bounds. Surprisingly, a lot of people have embraced this development with an enthusiasm that alarms civil libertarians. And in fact, a lot of civil liberties groups have no problem protesting this new feature.

Such a group in Great Britain estimates that there are over 4 million surveillance countries in the country today. Anyone who lives in London or a large will be captured at least 300 times on any given day. Britain has even been called the surveillance capital of the world. It is in danger of relying too much and too heavily on this technology.

    Camera Evolution

Proponents have called the new surveillance cameras a natural progression from previous advances. They say that the paranoia of an overly intrusive system is unfounded. In fact, they propose that that the talking cameras actually reassure citizens because they know that there is a human presence behind the lens. Most of these cameras actually transmit prerecorded messages informing passersby that they are being monitored. These messages further state that any untoward behavior will be reported to the authorities. Other messages remind people to mind their valuables. Some have proposed that children should voice these messages so as to make them less menacing.

These messages can also be broadcast live in real time. The surveillance camera operators can speak directly to people while watching the monitors. They can broadcast spontaneous lines asking people to stop unacceptable behavior or even pick up litter. But civil liberties groups remain unimpressed. They think this type technology is over-hyped and that the new voice broadcasts do not do anything to help in crime prevention. They think it is merely useless gimmickry.

    Just Another Day

Most people seem to take the disembodied voices in stride. Few people even take the time to stop and look for the source of the transmission. In fact, a lot of them enjoy the fact that it makes people aware that they are doing something wrong. They reason that discipline will be instilled in citizens if they are reminded.

Whether they are effective or not, these surveillance cameras are certainly revolutionary. It remains to be seen whether they can stop a bunch of rowdy teenagers from vandalizing public property. These cameras may even be the victim of such malicious pranks. But authorities are going to take that chance just to have their voices heard. They hope that a reminder of their vigilance will be the best deterrent to any criminal acts.
