"Don't talk to strangers!" It's a common phrase parents use to educate their kids, but it doesn't always work in the right way. A popular story made headlines across America a few summers ago when an 11-year-old boy was lost in the Utah wilderness for four days. During that time, he stayed on the trail. He saw people searching for him but deliberately hid from them, afraid someone might "steal" him. He was eventually found, but his interpretation of his parents' rule about strangers kept him in danger longer than necessary. That little boy listened to his parents, which was good. However, he didn't really understand what they meant, which was bad.

    Good things that are bad:

Kids want to be helpful. Strangers often ask children for help with something so they can be led away or snatched. Your child is very likely to cooperate because children seek validation.

Kids are trusting. Most children put all the people in the world into two groups: good guys and bad guys. Unfortunately, they can rarely tell who goes into which group because strangers who want to hurt them don't always look like "bad guys." Kids don't know that any stranger, no matter what they look like, could potentially hurt them.

Kids don't want to make a fuss. Many children have been taught how to behave in public: no screaming, no tantrums, and no fighting. When a stranger tries to abduct your child, your child might not want to make a fuss for fear of misbehaving and getting in trouble.

Kids want to follow your rules. You teach your children to beware of strangers, but you'd be surprised how few kids actually know who counts as a stranger. You don't want your child to avoid policemen or doctors because they consider them strangers so it's important they know the difference between good strangers and bad strangers.

You have a lot to worry about when it comes to protecting your child from strangers. Luckily there are some simple things you can to do keep them safe when you aren't around.

    Tips for parents

    1) Talk to your child about the dangers involved in dealing with strangers.

    2) Listen to your child when they try to tell you something is wrong.

    3) Teach your child the basics. Your child should know his phone number, address, and whom to ask for help.

    4) Make rules about where and when your kids can play.

    5) Get specific. Make sure your kid knows who counts as a stranger.

Nothing replaces your supervision of your child. It's your job to take care of your child, but you can't be with them all the time. When you aren't there your child must know what to do to stay safe from strangers. If you educate your children on dealing with strangers without scaring them, you can feel more confident about their safety.

It is important for all teachers to be continuously learning. A lot of teachers go through college and then get hired by a school and do the same things and same routines year after year. This become redundant and as new technologies and new studies come out teacher need to be knowledgeable on new teaching concepts and new material. For many years there weren't any programs that were required for teachers to learn of new educational technology and new ways of teaching. Students change every year and with each generation of children, their ways of learning change. Now a day, students need some sort of educational technology to keep their attention and because of this, teachers need to be ahead of the game when it comes to new teaching styles.

A new teacher education program was developed by school and higher education officials to improve teachers teaching skills. Eight states are implementing this program including, Louisiana, California, Colorado, Maryland, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee and New York. The teacher unions are also backing this program up which is great. Normally teacher unions protect the ineffective teachers from getting fired and keep "bad" teachers in the system because of tenure, but with this new program they teacher unions are starting to see the benefits. By teacher being able to have the opportunity of extra teacher education to help improve their teaching skills, improve their time management, organization, educational technology knowledge and general student motivation concepts, they can help students get better grades and understand the subjects better.

Its common sense that if a student understands a subject more and is taught in the right way with the right educational tools, they will prosper and do well on standardized tests, which help schools ratings and get them a good reputation for parents to want to enroll their children there. This pilot program includes lessons that are critiqued in class by officials and teachers are critiqued on their teaching skills, motivational skills and student participation. Its important to get students to feel comfortable enough to want to participate in class because then they will be able to feel comfortable enough to ask questions to be able to understand the lesson better.

By having the options for teachers to be able to continue their education through this new teacher education program, teachers can get the vital skills that they did not get while in college. In college teachers are taught to be masters on their subjects but not actually how to teach a student. It's important to not only know your information when teaching, but to be able to actually teach and help students to succeed. With this program in place, these eight states will have a foot forward on other states by teaching teachers the information they need to be able to successfully teach and motivate students. Half of the battle is getting the students to learn the information, the other half is getting them to actually want to learn the material and get good grades.

In Massachusetts, almost ninety-nine percent of their schools districts have filed bullying-prevention policies with the state. Schools were supposed to comply with writing out a plan to stop bullying and prevents it and what consequences the school will make to those who break the rule. A student Phoebe Prince, who committed suicide because of being bullied in school, brought on this anti-bullying law. They say the most effective anti-bullying plans are those that involve the entire school. Instead of just one set of groups enforcing and watching out for bullying, the teachers, cafeteria staff, librarians school bus drivers and other children need to prevent the bullying and report it if they see something. This is the only way that the program will be effective, is if everybody in the school is watching it closely.

One factor that is different in these anti-bullying laws is it is extending outside of the physical schools. Back in the day the only way to bully was to physically torment a person or play pranks constantly on them. Now that we have technology introduced into our kids lives they can be bullied by many different factors. They have a lot more opportunities to be bullied and it's harder to hide from bullies. A student can be bullied by constant harassment over the telephone or by text messaging, they can be bullied by chat with AOL, MSN, YAHOO, or any of the other popular instant messaging services, they can be bullied through social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace or twitter, or the old fashioned way of physical torment. Either way all of these torments are awful, weather they are physical or mental. Students need the protection from our schools so that they can live a peaceful life and relaxed educational experience.

With the adding of cyber bullying into the schools anti-bullying laws, the school has the right to protect their students outside of school as well. Some people argue that this is a schools abuse of power. Regardless if that is an abuse of power on the schools part, if it is protecting your children don't you think anything that would be of any help to a struggling scared student be a good thing? Some people might argue that the police are out there to get you or thy have too much power but in the long run, who do you call if you are in an emergency situation and need assistance? You can 911, the police. People are so quick to put down those that have an authority over them because people want to not be controlled, people want to be free and not have to follow rules, but to live in the United States, we have to have rules to maintain a safe and organized existence. Without rules or law enforcement or even as small as schools and their anti-bullying policies our society or educational system will fall apart and we all could be subject to despair. When thinking of these anti-bullying policies people need to realize these aren't some anti-happiness or anti-soda campaigns that take away constitutional rights, but they are law that can only benefit the students and protect them from harm.

In Maryland Public Schools administrators are contemplating integrating student bodies based on income integration. Currently schools in an area have either mostly poor or mostly rich kids, depending on the area and if the schools is located in the district that is "ghetto" or one of a nice community. By having this segregation of districts, which keep kids that don't live in a particular district from attending a particular school, it creates a income based segregation, which now Maryland is trying to change. By having the district schools lines around areas that are bad or good, they are creating school that have a certain degree of segregation without knowing it.

In general, having district lines might have an organizational benefit and create ease for the schools when determining who their student base will be, but it also has its downsides. By confining students to having to live in a certain area in order to attend a specific school, it creates an income-based segregation, depending on the area that the district is confined to. Schools think that by having the district lines it makes the schools have more ease when figuring out how students are to be divided to the different schools in the area. This could be a good thing so it keeps the schools organized and helps them to create boundaries that are always well needed when figuring out how to divide thousands of students.

The negative things that districts create are the fact that they create income-based segregation in schools. This is bad because the schools don't have the opportunity to teach a variety of students and have the opportunity to showcase their teaching skills for students or different incomes. When a school is confined to just one niche, such as helping the poor students to excel in school and motivate them to get college grants and further their education, this doesn't give the school much opportunity to help other students. As good as the school can be to help this one type of students, id they aren't well rounded and cant help all the students to be able to excel, then the school isn't the best that it could be.

Schools are always concerned with achieving great school ratings and becoming the best of the best. Schools need to have a variety of students and have different income based students to become a well-rounded school that has opportunity's for all students. A good way to integrate a variety of students into a school would be to allow all students from any area to attend a school. Not only will this help with overcrowding of school districts but it will bring a variety of incomes and different students with different backgrounds into the schools. Overall this will help the schools to become more diverse and to have better opportunity's to achieve greatness. Students will have a better start at life if they experience school with a better diversity, because in real life, all people have different economic backgrounds and its important for students to be associated with all type of people to better their lives and help them to excel in their social and career lives in the future.

A new study is being practiced in districts across the United States. Teacher evaluation is a very important part of their jobs and its important for teachers to be challenged to keep things fresh. There are many types of evaluations. There can be someone hired to "grade" how effective they are as a teacher and also by studying the test scores that the teacher's students are producing critique evaluations in the classroom. The New York City Department of Education is among the districts that are participating in this study that will determine if evaluating a teachers students performance on tests is really a way to test a teacher and how well they are effectively teaching their students.

In a way it seems unfair to evaluate teacher based on their students test scores, every school has their "bad seeds" that don't care about school and guess all C's on the multiple choice tests, or make funny designs out of the scantrons. Regardless of how amazing a teacher is, there will always be these students that just don't care.

Some students pride themselves on getting straight A's and bringing home their report cards to their parents and some children's parents are too busy with work, or other engagements to worry about school. So in a way, parents hold a lot of accountability when it comes to their children's education ethics.

While its so easy to blame everyone else for the students performance at the same time it stems down to what they are taught at home or by any of the role models in their life. Sometimes all a student has is their teachers to look up to if their family home environment isn't as good. When this situation arises, its important for teachers to speak to these students and try and motivate these "bad seeds." The teachers do hold a lot of accountability when it comes to students test scores because they are the ones responsible for these students to actually learn. If a student is guessing on a test because of lack of caring or because they want to rebel, it could be because the teachers also aren't doing their job to properly motivate the students. Now this would be a reason as to why test scores is a good way of evaluating a teacher's performance. Not only does evaluating the teachers based on test scores find out if the material they are teaching their students on a daily basis is actually sticking and they are actually learning something, but it also evaluates if the teachers are properly motivating the students to want to learn and want to do good in school.

If the teachers are motivating their students and teaching them about life after school and integrating goal planning into their lesson plans, the students will want to do good in school and want to do good on tests. In turn this evaluation method will really show if the teachers are being effective not only in teaching the students material but also giving them the motivation to wanting to better their future.

The 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress has said that fewer than half of the nation is proficient in science and technology and even fewer are planning a future career of it. A director of the New York Hall of Science, who is also a board member that oversees the test, knows that if something doesn't change, our technological future is in jeopardy. In a time where technology is constantly advancing and every month new products are coming out on the market and new educational technology tools are being invented everyday, it's important to keep this pace. In Japan, they are light-years ahead of the United States in the technological field and if we don't start getting students interested in pursuing careers in these fields, our nation will suffer.

The children are our future, if we keep the schools technology at a standstill and keep creating excuses on why not to add educational technology into the classrooms and school districts; the students wont see a need to pursue these types of careers in science and technology. If a school has a lot of educational technology implemented in their curriculums, students will be able to use these devices on a daily basis and have a drive to create better devices or in general like the technology so much that they want to make a career out of it.

The easiest way to get students interested in a career is implementing it into their everyday lives. It's important to give them exciting devices to play with and learn from. When their classes seem to be getting more organized because of these devices and their grades start to go up students will realize how important the technology is and how it is changing their lives. When a student sees first hand how a technological device or educational technology improves their school performance, they will see the need to improve future devices and constantly think up ways to improve the devices they are using.

If we are going to keep up with the rest of the world technology wise, the United States needs to implement more technology into the classrooms. What's holding schools back currently is the cost. Schools know first hand that by implementing educational technology devices into the classrooms the students will get better test scores and have a more organized educational career. It's so important also to incorporate this educational technology into the classrooms because it will get students interested in this technology, then when a school hosts a science and technology fair, students will be more apt to want to attend and maybe even participate in the event.

If we don't start implementing this technology, regardless if the cost is to schools, it will greatly hinder the United States and how our technology is if we don't start implementing technology into the classrooms. Students need to learn hands on what benefits they can receive from the educational technology and by getting students interested in it, more students will want to make a career out of it.

North Carolina is the first of the US states to offer Microsoft certification and training courses in every high school. The certifications that the students have the opportunity of achieving are a Microsoft Office Specialist or a Microsoft Certified Professional. These certifications can only be earned as long as the student has completed all course work and passed all tests. In the courses the students have access to official Microsoft course materials, instructor resources, online learning content, software licenses, lesson plans and professional certifications.

This Microsoft designation program is called the Microsoft IT academy and it is featured in schools with over 9000 students taking the course in 100 different countries and just now the United States is beginning to offer this in our schools. The rest of the world is so far ahead of the United States technology wise and this is a reason why. We adopt new technological education courses or recourses much later than the other countries, that's why they are so many technology engineers in other countries and the United States science and technology jobs are dwindling because not many people show an interest in it. If all schools were to offer this Microsoft IT academy program, students would become more familiar with the computer, internet and Microsoft programs and this could spark interest in students that otherwise wouldn't have known they were interested in pursuing such a career.

What's great about this program is that is almost all online. It consists of virtual notes, video lessons, interactive activities, lab activities, self tests and it is all combined on windows live. By having all of the materials connected with windows live, students can access their Microsoft training programs from any computer, as long as they have Internet access. What is great about having constant access to the material, students can take their classwork home and work more on certain projects that spark their interest. They also will constantly have access, as long as they have an Internet connection, to any material they might need for homework, or just to study in general.

This program helps a lot with students who want to acquire certain job skills to put on their resume and help land them a better paying job right out of high school. Not that they will become a lawyer right away, but they have the opportunity to make more money, as either a receptionist or an assistant with these skills than a burger flipper and pay their way through college. The only argument that people have about this program is that it is designed too much around one company, Microsoft. It makes sense that smaller companies would feel that it should showcase all brands, but Microsoft is the biggest company and more companies in the world use Microsoft products on a daily basis so it is important to retrieve skills from the company itself. By having a designation or certification right out of high school, students will feel accomplished and be able to make more money to go to college and stimulate the United States economy more as well.

In Bucks County Philadelphia, they had at one time completely banned the issue of cell phones during school hours on campus. Cell phones were starting to interrupt the classrooms and teachers were tired of seeing them out in class, the more popular cell phones got, the more parents realized the safety benefits a cell phone could have. With safety in mind parents were buying cell phones for their kids younger and younger, but the problem is, were they monitoring these devices? Cell phones started to become and issue in class, students were taking their phones out to show them off to their friends, their friends were calling them during class and disrupting the teachers lesson, usually created a giggle in the classroom depending on the students ringtone.

Students started getting smarter and putting their phones on vibrate or silent while in the classroom, but when texting started to get more and more popular, students began to text each other during class and lectures instead of the old way of passing notes. This made it harder for teachers to regulate the distractions in the class because it was much harder to see a text sent through cyber space than a bright white note being passed back and forth during class. So the schools decided to ban the use of cell phones entirely and then take their phones away to have their parents pick it up at a later date. Not only did this create more problems that it solved, but parents weird getting frustrated having to go into schools to get back what they considered to be a safety device for their child.

In the event of an emergency a cell phone can be extremely beneficial and potentially life saving. Parents don't realize that their cellular companies offer a plan that lets the parents control every aspect of the cell phone, they can set the phone to not be able to text during certain times of the day, such as school hours or after nine pm, they can do the same with phone calls, but what's great is that they cans et exceptions to these rules, like that they can still be in contact via text or call with their parents, grandparents or whomever the parents trust and law enforcement. They can set limits to the number of minutes they can use and the number of text messages they can use. This information isn't widely shared in the media so that's why not a lot of people know about it.

Now the schools are starting to make a reform they are now allowing cell phones to be used on campus but only between classes or on lunch or snack breaks. The schools realized they were spending too much time confiscating the devices for it actually to be benefit. In this age where technology has so many benefits and cell phones are becoming to popular it just makes sense to lighten the bans on these potentially life saving devices.

An annual School Networking Conference goes on every year in Arlington, Virginia where people can be recognized for their educational technology inventions and how the technology has benefitted schools. Every year newer technology arises and schools are trying as hard as they can to keep up with the pace. Technology is expensive and because of its ever-changing structure, it makes it hard for schools to find the worth in spending millions of dollars equipping schools with it since in just a year, that money went to waste. As much as technology benefits our society, we can begin to think, are we relying too heavily on technology?

Back before technology and the Internet was the biggest thing, teachers taught, students took notes and listened. Now teachers rely heavily on their projectors, interactive white boards, Internet connection and much more to keep up with their demanding lesson plans and curriculum. Because of the invention of all these greatly beneficial educational technology teachers are able to get more information to students in a shorter amount of time and students can learn better and more things. This is of great value because it helps the students to learn as much as they can and get them the most out of their school experience. But what if there was a blackout or power outage and the school had no power? They would most likely send the students home, which is sad to say. Back in the day, rain or snow, school continued on, they worked by candlelight and teachers read from a book, yes a paper book, not an eReader.

Technology is great and students get a lot from it, but what are its limits? Our society has put no socially acceptable "cap" on how much technology is too much technology. We constantly have our cell phones in our hand, fearing that if we didn't have our cell phones for one minute we would be caught in an emergency situation and need a telephone and our cell phone would be no where to be found? People got along fine without their phones back in the day and today isn't any different. The difference now is that the cell phone companies made us believe that without it, we could die, and this lead to customers buying phones for their five year olds, "just in case of an emergency." Technology is great, but its important to have a balance in life. If you are constantly text messaging and not calling, or playing Facebook games with friends instead of meeting in person and playing an outdoor sport, then you need to assess your technological life and change it. We cant live a truly meaningful life if we don't have real life relationships that the people we call family or "friends" on Facebook, if you have 600 "friends" on Facebook, there is no way you could spend time with them all. The only possible way to connect to them all at once is through social media, and even then, its not personalized and not creating a meaningful relationship. As much as technology has helped students in school, its important to keep a balance between technology and what's real.

In the Atlanta Independent School District they are changing their old ways and introducing a lot of educational technology into their classrooms. They not only are introducing new technology but they are really researching how to successfully incorporate this into the classrooms. They don't want to just throw an ipad at a student and tell them to go on a certain application for the day, they really want teacher and student involvement to be key to making educational technology a success in their classrooms. They want students to engage more in the classrooms and teachers to help a lot more one on one with the students. The benefits of having educational technology devices such as iPads, iPod touches, eReaders or any other type of learning device is that teachers can spend more one on one time with the students. You would think it would be opposite, that by introducing a device that a student uses independently in the class would make them engage less, but by introducing the technology accompanied with the teachers knowledge of how to engage will make the Atlanta Independent School district successful.

With the devices, instead of teachers having to stand in the front of a classroom and lecture their students and have student's participate once in a while, the educational technology brings the students to life. The students are able to participate one hundred percent by learning hands on. Also the teachers can walk around the classroom and talk to the students one on one and help them a lot more. The teachers go through a training program that teaches them how to engage students with the education technology devices and how to make the learning fun. Its important for teachers to create a fun and safe learning environment so the students will want to learn and ask questions. In the teachers educational technology training they are taught how to keep the mobile learning safe. The devices that the schools purchase can be set to make sure only certain applications or websites are accessed to make sure the devices are only used for education. Also by teachers being able to freely walk around and help the students instead of lecturing in front of them, the teachers are able to monitor the students more closely and help them one on one.

It's very important for schools that are starting to introduce educational technology into their classrooms that they have a training seminar for the teachers. Not only should they be trained ion the new device and become experts on it so they can help their students, but they need to learn how to make the technology integration a success in their classrooms. With the Atlanta Independent School District knowing this key information and helping their teachers become experts on technology integration and how to create a successful learning environment, they will have great success on improving the students test scores, grades and keeping their attention in class. Education technology is great and very beneficial to teacher and students, but it only works if you know how to successfully integrate it into your classrooms.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District has made drastic changes to their math curriculum. When their test scores were not improving my much more than three percent, the school district decided to implement Texas Instruments'' MathForward program to help students with their math skills. The MathForward program helps to increase algebra readiness and math performance in middle school students.

The program is a comprehensive approach to math reform, it increases the instructional time, which allows students to memorize formulas better and study longer. This helps students a lot because with a subject like math, because math is a subject that requires a lot of study time and class time to fully understand the concepts of math. If a student merely memorizes the math formulas in a one-hour classroom setting, they wont retain the information and that's what this program is trying to do, They want students to retain information for long time use, instead of memorizing just for the upcoming test. Schools want students to do well on their standardized tests, which will help improve the schools ratings. By helping this students retain the math knowledge, not only will it help Improve the schools ratings, but it will help the students to be better prepared for math courses they take in high school and college down the road.

Another way that MathForward helps increase students test score is by increasing the teacher's knowledge in the subject. They create special math trainings for teachers on new ways to teach math and new math lessons that will be beneficial to teaching the students. This is good because it is always important to have on going trainings in teachers subjects because it keeps them from becoming monotonous in their lesson plans and keeps things fresh for their students. By giving the teachers continuous coaching and classes that helps develop their effective teaching skills, students will benefit and feel more confident in their knowledge of the math subject, since the teachers that are teaching it are extremely knowledgeable on the subject.

They are also using technology to motivate the students by creating programs along with MathForward to assist students in math. The students will be more focused and interested when technology is introduced because it is something new and something that will help break up the monotonous subject of math. They will also have administrators and parents involved in backing up the MathForward program to help credit the program and give the students confidence that this program really can help them. By implementing this program into the schools their test scores rose an astounding thirty-five percent, opposed to the three percent from before with just the normal math program. In schools that didn't implement the MathForward program, they will definitely be implementing it during the following year. They are also adding forty math teachers to the district to keep up with the high demand of math teacher that the program calls for. With statistics like that, there is no arguing that MathForward works!

Indianapolis based company, Synovia Corporation, is coming up with a few different types of technology-based programs to help save schools money. The came out with one technology that was a card that bus drivers used to clock in to their driving day and it automatically racked their time and sorted out weather it was field trip, regular school hours or after schools activities. By creating this technology and having all bus drivers switch to this type of time management, it has saved the district more than $260,000. The overestimation of time worked by bus drivers, even if 9its just a couple of unites each day, was costing the district more than what they were actually getting labor for. Another system that Synovia Corporation has created was a mobile terminal that lets the bus drivers communicate with a local dispatcher in the case on an emergency. The mobile terminal also has an emergency button that will call for local emergency support if pressed.

Another technology that is like Synovia's bus driver time clock key card, is Education Logistics Incorporated, they created application that is used on a bus driver's phone that allows them to enter an employee number and clock it on a mobile device. Instead of having to gather to one common are to clock in, bus drivers can now cut time by having the option of clocking their hours on a mobile device. Another great feature of this technology is when a bus driver is nearing forty hours for one work week, it automatically alerts the district and then the district can assign other bus drivers that have less time, to field trips and after school activity's. This system has saved the school system about one million dollars in just the past year because of it saving money from paying overtime and overestimated time worked by the employees.

The company SchoolDude is known for its online software that is used for inventory management and helps school officials and tech managers with helpdesk support. They are creating a program that helps schools regain the costs that occur when the community uses the school campus after school hours. Another great invention that is saving schools money is the Dyson Air blade; this is a handheld dryer that dries hand completely in just twelve seconds. The air comes out at more than 400 miles per hour and it can dry twenty-two pairs of hands for the cost of a single paper towel. Not only is this invention cost savvy for the schools, but also it helps reduce waste to make our world a better place. The Destiny Textbook manager is a system that uses barcode on all school materials, such as books, textbooks or other valuable material. This system links the barcode to the specific student and helps reduce theft or loss of items since the students are held responsible for the items.

Technology is reducing a lot of costs for schools. Initially the schools will have to pay for the technology, which may seem pricy at first, but the benefits and savings that a school can anticipate over time, is well worth the initial cost.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have granted $290 Million to four districts to improve the quality of the teachers. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has always been keen to helping the education system and trying to improve it. This is the biggest they have ever donated at one time to the cause. Its important to know that teachers make all the difference in a students education and they are the people that can either make or break a students success in school. We know that teacher unions protect the education system in the United States, which is not at the advantage for the students. Why would the education system care more about its teachers than its students? The students are the most important be cause these are the people that will one day be running our country. It so important for the students to get high quality of education and have a high quality teacher to lead the way throughout their educational journey. Out of the $290 million, Pittsburg is getting $40 million.

Some of the requirements the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has set to their grants is that they need to focus on teacher training. Teachers will have to train for one year after graduation from their teaching degree to learn how to teach others and how to truly be an effective teacher. This is a crucial step to becoming a teacher and it's a shock that this isn't implemented in the graduation requirements already. The teachers currently learn about a particular subject, or general education and then go from that to teaching students. This definitely doesn't come across well all the time. An effective teacher is something that is rare to find and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is trying to change that.

Because the Foundation knows that an effective teacher is the most important part of a students education, which is what they are putting their main focus on. They are putting the truly effective teachers in the most challenging classrooms to help the kids that need more focused attentions and better teachers to be able to succeed. Of course there are those students out their who have amazing education ethics and don't need parents or teachers to remind them to study for a test or complete their homework or class work. These kids are a rarity as well, more often than not, a teacher needs to be that role model for the student and get them to have the will to study and have the will to do good in school and continue their education through college or vocational school. Its how this country is run. We need business people, sales people and doctors but this country cant succeed with a bunch of high school dropouts that only hopes for a good job is a fast food chain. They also will be getting rid of ineffective teachers which all around will prevent future students from suffering from the results of ineffective teachers.

In Fairfax County, Virginia, after the new Whiteboard technology was implemented into their schools, they saw a big increase in test scores and student performance in all grade levels. All technology companies are promising schools that by buying their educational technology devices it will ensure their students will do better in school and they will have improved test scores. People are starting to say that spending millions on new educational technologies is not only a waste of money, but it isn't proven to help raise test scores and make the school any better, it just makes it different.

Technology is a great thing and it is very complicated so people can be scared of it. Scared of the vulnerability it could possibly create, because of hackers or because of the fact that they can't control technology one hundred percent of the time. Regardless of people fears of technology it is something that needs to be added to schools curriculum, just based upon the fact that technology is incorporated in everyday life after school. In college and in work environments, technology is utilized a lot throughout life and it's important for a student to be prepared and have a good knowledge of technology and how to use it.

Traditional people that don't care for technology and who grew up without it feel that kids these days shouldn't have such a constant access to technology and that it hinders their education rather then helping them. They feel that it creates too many shortcuts to the old way of reading a textbook and researching what they need to find. In some ways that could be true. With Google, you can find anything, essays pre-written for a cost, website explaining books and giving help on what the book was about so the student doesn't have to read it, they also can literally type the question into Google and find the answer. So in a way, technology does create a lot of shortcuts and gives a lot of student's opportunity for cheating.

Regardless if the Internet or technology in general gives kids more access to cheating or shortcuts, the kids that do this and try to get an easy way out of an assignment, they would have done so in another way if the technology weren't available. They would have cheated of their peer in a test or paid a "nerd" to write the essay for them. Technology is such a great thing and it has helped so many people, and because it is now incorporation into schools, it is capturing the student's attention more and making them feel more comfortable in the classroom. In this day and age, it's important to incorporate this educational technology into classrooms because that's what the future is. Our future is based on new technology and any job you have in the future will be relying on some sort of technological advancement weather you work in a supermarket or a law firm on Wall Street in a big city.

It's always been a struggle on how to improve students test score and grades and how to effectively create incentives for teachers to really work and try their best to help the students. You would think, this is their job, shouldn't they already want to help the students get better score on tests and in class? The sad thing is, most teachers that go into the teaching profession aren't effective teachers and they aren't taught how to be effective teachers. They are merely taught about the subject they are learning in college and aren't taught "how" to effectively teach.

School officials and the government wave been trying to figure out a way to "bribe" the teachers to get the students to do better on tests and in school. One way they thought would give the teachers incentive was to offer a $15,000 dollar bonus per year is the teachers improved the test score of the students. On top of their salary they would get this large bonus if their class did better than the previous years on standardized test score. They did this test over a period of three years and found that it did not improve overall the students test scores by offering this bonus. In Georgia, this $15,000 dollar incentive to teachers was not passed through as a stable bonus because it didn't show significant improvement. The only way to really get teachers teaching effectively is to put them through training courses and teach them how to do that. If you tell someone to swim ten miles in the ocean and bribe them with money, of any amount, unless they have had the proper training, they wont be able to do it regardless of how much incentive they are given.

Other plans that were implemented to help boost student test scores were giving teachers merit pay. Instead of giving all teachers the same amount of money the teachers regular pay is based off how well their students score in the tests. This is lie a commission type of pay and it did not fly with the union. The union protects the teachers and a lot of programs the school or government try to test, the unions reject. It does seem fair to base a teacher pay based on how well they are teaching their students, its their job right? Instead, the union protects the teacher regardless if they are actually teaching our children and giving them a good start to life outside the educational system. The union protects teacher's that have been in the system for a long time and protects them from being fired. If a teacher is at a school for a longtime, its doesn't mean they are better teachers, sometime it can actually make them worse teachers because they get lazy and stop caring. Unfortunately they are protected and there is nothing that the schools can do. Its important for schools to also stop blaming the union for everything and blaming them for the restriction that they put on the schools. The schools also need to step up and start to offer and require mandatory trainings, classes and workshops for the teachers to help improve their skills and encourage them to step up.

The New York City Public Schools ordered more than two thousand iPads for a total cost of 1.3 million for school districts such as Long Island and the Bronx. Teachers all over the country are finding so many uses for the applications that apple offers on their application store. Especially for math, teachers are finding hat the kids are learning so much more with these devise because not only is it capturing their attention and making them want to earn math, but it is turning a really "boring' subject into a fun and exciting adventure. Back in the day we had programs on old computers that would help us with spelling, and the English language and now they are coming out with exciting math programs.

They have games on the iPads that are like jeopardy and ask questions for you to answer, to test your knowledge. They also have step by step animated diagrams and explanations of complex math problems and formulas. This is so helpful for the students because they are able to learn something new on their own, instead of having to listen to a lecture on problems and risk "falling asleep in class." This invention of the ipad made it possible for teachers to give their students a great advantage in their classes and helping the teachers evaluations go up, because of how well the students are doing in class and how much fun they are having while learning.

Each student gets an iPad in these districts and they are to sue these iPads at home and at school. At home they use the iPads to replace textbooks and completely do their assignments from the ipad and submit them to their teachers on the ipad. What's great is the ipad will store a record of the students turned in assignments so nothing can go awry with a teacher losing an important assignment and the student getting a fail for that assignment because it's the teachers word against theirs. This makes turning in assignments a breeze and helps students to organize their already hectic school life. Technology is helping so much with education and the ipad is just one of the inventions that schools are turning to technology-wise, to enhance their schools and get better school ratings. The better the school is rated the higher their budget will be to make the school an even better and more technological place.

Some people argue that an ipad doesn't have enough evidence that it actually helps kids learn better or faster with this device, they say the school districts 1.3 million dollars would have been better spent on the teachers and furthering their education and teaching skills, rather than purchasing an extravagance. This could hold true to some points, why in this economy does a school who already is in debt feel that It is ok to spend that kind of money on devise that are not necessary? If in the long run these devices help the students and help their test scores go up, then the school will get great ratings.

Chicago Public schools are offering a new credit recovery summer school program that gives the high school students a chance to retake their course that they failed without having to retake the whole year again. The education system is realizing that students shouldn't have to waste their time and retake a course that they may have already known seventy percent of the material. What this new credit recovery online program does is test your knowledge the material and then focus on teaching the students what they didn't learn or understand correctly from the previous year. This way it allows students the ability to graduate, if a particular course stood in their way credit wise, or if a student want to avoid retaking the entire course when they know most of it already.

This is a great idea because it breaks down what the students already know and don't know and compiles the information to the teacher of the online course so that the teacher can focus on just that information that the students didn't get. Instead of retaking a course the whole next year or being held back, a student has the option of completing this online credit recovery program to get the credits they need to gradate or avoid retaking the entire year of the class. Technology is so amazing that it is able to help with our student's education. The online testing tests a students knowledge of the previous years course and finds out exactly what areas or lesson plans that the student doesn't fully understand and design's the course around what the students need to learn to be able to move on to the next level of that subject.

This is very cost effective for the schools as well since the online recovery course costs less than the students having to retake a course for an entire year in school. Schools are all about cost effectiveness and usually with educational technology the cost is so great that many schools cannot make the reforms needed to fully be able to teach the 21swt century student. By creating this online program, not only does it save the school money but also it makes it easier for the student to get the credits they need to graduate. A happier student makes happier parents and better school ratings. When a school offers such great options for the student to help their students to get the credits they need it makes the school a popular choice for parents.

Just knowing that a school is constantly creating new programs and trying to improve current programs is enough for parents to want their kids to attend that school. We all know that the education system has been lacking in the past, as it is not keeping up with the times technology wise. It is expensive to completely reform a school and make it current with the 21st century since the technology changes so frequently and update constantly, but as schools integrate a little more technology little by little, the schools will start to see an increase in their positive school ratings.

In Massachusetts, a Boston Based Virtual Public School is trying to fight against limits that the state panel is trying to set on them. Online schools are so beneficial to a lot of people, for parents who cannot find transportation for their children, for home schooled children who would benefit from the challenges on online school and for bullied kids, who their parents pull from public school because of the torment they are receiving. It is such a great invention of this century and it seems that in Massachusetts, they are trying to limit this technology and control the program.

Massachusetts is trying to set limits on their first Virtual School. The first limit they are trying to place is requiring the students to live in the district where the online school is operating; this defeats the purpose of a virtual school which is supposed to be helpful for students that live too far from a school or have special needs making an online school necessary. If there are limits set to having to live in the district to be able to attend online classes, the students that would love to attend an online school are set back in other areas. If a student really wants the opportunities of a virtual school, such as getting extra credit towards college, or help in finishing classes needed to graduate then these limits will negatively affect the students of the state of Massachusetts. There is a difference between a healthy control and over-control.

Another limit the school board is trying to set is to set the number of students allowed to attend to 500. This is unfortunate because then it's a race to see who enrolls first and who actually gets to receive the benefits on online classes or a virtual school program. This will lead to disappointment by many who were looking forward to attending this virtual school. It also doesn't make sense for a school to cap online enrollment in virtual schools, there is not need to either because there is an unlimited amount of room in virtual schools. Virtual school saves schools money by having students do their classwork from home.

It saves on schools supplies, janitorial costs at physical schools and much more. You would think a district would want to have as many students enroll in a virtual school to help save the state money. The benefits on virtual schools and virtual classes definitely outweigh any risks. It is entirely beneficial and not only helps the students achieve more but help the districts and states save money. Isn't that the motivation for many states, to save money and reduce their debt?

By giving the students opportunity's such as virtual schools it helps tremendously with drop out rates and in general giving the students more options to be able to further their education. The more high school graduates, the more students will attend college and get good jobs, which will help stimulate the states economy by lowering unemployment. So since this is such a great program, why set limits?

Idaho public schools created a plan to introduce more educational technology into their school system. The growing need for more and more technology in the classroom is apparent and it costs money. Technology in the classroom is greatly beneficial and helps prepare students for the future and helps them gain knowledge that will be utilized everyday in their adult life, if it isn't already. The chief of the Idaho public schools devised a plan stating in order to pay for this educational technology to be integrated into their schools they will require teachers to have larger class sizes. The question is, does the benefit of educational technology outweigh the cons of having a larger class size?

We know that with larger class sizes, the students get less individualized attention. Some students require more attention than others. All students learn differently and at different paces and with more students for the teachers to look after and tech, it becomes unmanageable. Not to mention it would be more difficult to get all the students to pay attention and diffuse chatter and distractions if there is a larger class size. With distractions aside, how will teachers be able to manage all the time with the students? If they need to take a field trip, there are more kids to look after or if they need to schedule five-minute presentations per person, then they will have to do so in two different days, which could then result in a loss of other lessons that would be beneficial for the students learning on particular subject.

What about the benefits of educational technology? We live in a new era and it's important we stick with the times. We ant be writing on a chalkboard and teaching our students if the world doesn't revolve around that anymore. Most jobs use projectors and PowerPoint in meetings and projects. It's important to pass on these skills to the student's so their transition from their educational life to their careers and adults life is a smooth transition. Schools need to make the technological reforms and get technology integrated into their classrooms as soon as possible because if students aren't learning with technology, then life after school is going to be a shock. In a technology rich world, we need to pass on these skills to the students to keep up with it.

As there is concern for larger class sizes and what cons they have, wouldn't technology greatly benefit the larger class size? Personal educational technological devices can give the students the individualized attention they need and help the students to learn at their own pace and track their data. By working with computers students can be independent and figure things out with help from the Internet. By integrating projectors and 3-d technology it will capture the students attention and cause less distractions. So all excuses aside, the larger class sizes wouldn't be a big con for the benefits of having educational technology integrated into the classrooms.

    Teachers in Charge

In Los Angeles, they are reforming the school systems to better serve their students. At Woodland Hills Academy in Northern Los Angeles they are giving equal rights to teachers. All school officials have the same amount of say. Teachers and Principals and other school administrators all are equal. Teacher can change their curriculum to meet the needs of their students, they can decide how to spend school money and hire who they see fit. They do still have to meet state and federal mandates for education.

Most schools in our current system use the same curriculum and standards state wide. This seems as if it would not do any good for our teachers at all! If they are forced in teaching a certain way, they may not be able to educate the students as well then if they were given a little leeway in molding the curriculum to their style of teaching.

It would be beneficial for teachers to be able to bend the curriculum and have an equal say in school spending because it will benefit the students with the teachers being able to teach in the best way possible. By giving the teachers room to suggest new things and make decisions, they can create ways to better suit their teaching style. By giving teachers the ability to make decisions on how the school is spending their money, it will greatly improve the teachers and students relationship. By having all the right materials they need to better serve the students and by students being able to express their individual needs to the teachers, the teachers can make informed decisions in what the schools needs to make it a good environment for students.

Across the country schools are starting to partake in this new school system. There have been no statistics saying that one school system is better than the other as of yet. There is an argument that asks whether a large group of individuals can easily come to a mutual decision on something. Think about it; fifty individuals trying to decide how to spend the schools money and all having to be on the same page. This would create long drawn out decisions and slow down the schools for effectively getting things done. There are benefits to having someone as the final decision maker. By having a principle as a higher authority it creates respect in the work environment and a solid foundation for students.

Are all styles of teachings the right way? A certain curriculum may work for the teachers but is it really benefiting the students? If all teachers in a school were to have their way and be able to do as they please, the schools wouldn't be as uniform and might confuse students when advancing grades.

It's all about the students. It's important to form a school system around the needs of the children because that's the reason the school is there. Until statistics come out stating which school system is benefiting the students more and helping the students improve their grades we won't know for sure. They both have their pros and cons.

In Arizona, elementary schools in the Flagstaff District are sending home notices to children's parents that their kids are overweight. They weigh and measure every student and if the student is heavy for their height, underweight, or moderately close to one of these extremes they get a notice sent home to their parents telling them what needs to change. Is this too early for a student to have to worry about their body? This "notice" seems it would cause self esteem issues in these young children. Isn't there a time when a child is supposed to just be a worry-free kid?

We adults think back to our childhood and say, wouldn't it be nice to have that young innocent worry-free mind again? Now think back again to how you would feel if your parents received that notice. It seems that the school district is overstepping their boundaries as school officials. Schools should focus on teaching; doctors should warn parents of potential health risks. What the schools could do that would benefit the children would be to offer healthy food at the school's cafeteria, take out soda machines in the hallways and promote their Physical Education department. It seems lazy and cheap for them to send a notice; they are basically saying, were not going to serve healthy food because it's too expensive and were too cheap to enhance our Physical Education department. Because of this laziness, children's self esteem gets affected because now there is something "wrong" with them.

On top of all this, the notice is like a slap in the face to a lot of parents. It's basically criticizing them as parents saying they feed their children junk, too much, or not enough. Parents know their children, they see them every day, they know if their son or daughter is a little heavy, but realizes they may be going through a growth spurt soon just like they did as kids. They know their skinny son or daughter with the fast metabolism will fill out with age. Everybody is built different, some people can weigh heavy because of muscle or because they're bigger boned. These people can be the healthiest individuals and eat right and exercise but they are just different. The kids that ring in normal can be the ones that eat fast food every day and play video games all day after school, but their body metabolizes the food faster, so they are considered healthy, according to the schools scale.

The way I see it, if the Arizona schools were genuinely concerned on their rankings or ratings in the area of student health, they would implement programs to create healthy children! They would pay the extra dollar for the fruit, sandwiches and salads instead of the rubber chicken nuggets they offer in the cafeteria. They would remove the vending machines and enhance their gyms and physical education departments. The children would prosper much more than going home with their heads down to their parents with their failed "Health report card".

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

A federal grant is giving money to California's Contra Costa County to track preschoolers using RFID chips. These RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips are a device that tracks the exact location of the item the tag is on. This is used all over on items such as CD's, electronic devices, clothing and more. It helps to prevent theft by alarming the doors if someone were to walk out with an item not paid for or not "de-magnetized" at the check stands. These chips can also be used for tracking people's behavior through their personal items. The George Miller III Head Start program in Richmond, California is the first school to adopt this new technology here in California. This controversial chip is not placed inside the human body, but worn attached to a Jersey that the children will have to wear. These jerseys will have a FRID chip inside of it and every door at the school will automatically check them in. This helps them cut cost and keep "inventory" of the children.

A lot of controversy has come along with these chips. Even though they seem harmless because they are worn outside the body, parents wonder why this type of security and monitoring is needed for preschoolers. This seems above and beyond any type of monitoring needed for children under the age of five. What the county is hoping to benefit from the chip are the children's movements for data collection, automatic attendance and tracking meal schedules. According to a county official; they are implementing this to reduce the cost of teachers manually tracking this information so that they can better serve the needs of their students and have more time to teach them. The question is… how much time does it actually save? Do the benefits of this device outweigh the risk and cost/upkeep? What if someone forgets their jersey at home or a chip starts acting up and the system fails? Then it would do more harm than good, taking the teachers attention away for an even longer period of time trying to fix the system and manually count the kids who forgot their jersey.

Is it safe? That's a question of many parents whose children attend this school. After they had approved this new program they had not designed an opt-out option for parents who were concerned about this. They have been using this FRID system for a long time in the UK and Japan with small children because they are faster and harder to keep track of. They say it is great for safety, protecting kids from being kidnapped and abducted. The other side of the argument says because these trackers are only embedded in the clothing, it would be easy for a child to remove the jersey, or whatever article of clothing the FRID was attached to and then it would be useless for safety.

Are these chips a false sense of security for parents and school officials or do they really help in giving teachers more time to teach your children? Whatever your thoughts are on this device, technology has come a long way and it is only getting better.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

In 2005, state legislators added two additional immunizations to the list that Baltimore schools must ensure all children through the ninth grade have before attending school. The first deadline for Baltimore schools' children for the new vaccinations was the start of school for school year 2006-2007. Due to lack of compliance across the state, that deadline was extended to January 1, 2007. Students with scheduled appointments for the vaccinations were permitted to attend classes for two additional weeks.

We are now in February and 3,200 Baltimore schools' students remain out of school, because they have not received the hepatitis B and chickenpox immunizations. There still are a total of 12,000 excluded students across the state, who are not in compliance with the new requirements.

Many state officials, as well as Baltimore schools' administrators, cannot believe that such a problem exists. Though it was quite an undertaking, they did everything possible to ensure compliance. Working with state health officials, the Baltimore schools mailed letters to the students' homes, telephoned the parents, assisted in scheduling vaccination appointments, held conferences with the students, and set up vaccination clinics with late hours where possible.

Greg Reed, program manager for the state health department's Center for Immunization, stated that the $1.3 million funding for the project was not received until September. That left very little time to set up free and reduced cost clinics across the state. Many schools, including some within the Baltimore schools, were left with no clinic assistance or lack of nursing staff for low-income families and parents who work long hours.

Though many blame procrastinating parents, there is no common thread as to why the children were not immunized. The Baltimore schools will have to wait to discover the experiences of each of its schools, until that information can be gathered and analyzed. Then, they will be able to evaluate the compliance methods employed by each of the Baltimore schools.

Responsibility must be shared by all — Baltimore schools' administrators who did not stay on top of the problem with planned interventions to ensure compliance; the state health department that should have had plans, people and equipment ready to go as funding was received; legislators who did not ensure funding was there early enough to do some good; and parents who should want their children protected with immunizations important enough to garner the attention of the state legislature.

Additionally, all concerned in the Baltimore schools' district should realize that blaming the parents for "procrastinating" breaks down the lines of communication. It is critical to work together. For many of the Baltimore schools' parents, especially within the urban areas, it is difficult to get their children to the doctor for something other than an emergency. They work extremely long hours. Many work two or more jobs just to make ends "almost" meet. There is little, if any, extra money. When there is, it generally goes for such luxuries as clothing for their children.

Article Title: Standardized Final Exams For Arizona Schools — Better For The Students Or Just Another Measurement For The State?

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

There is currently a bill in the Arizona state legislature, proposing that the state create standardized final exams for specific core high school courses within the Arizona schools. The bill was introduced by the Senate Education Committee Chairman and has the support of many key educational figures.

Arizona schools chief Tom Horne supports the bill, as does several educational researchers. Paul Koehler, director of WestEd (a nonprofit research agency) also lends support, stating that state standardized final exams gives the state and Arizona schools a "broader and more logical profile" of Arizona schools students' performance.

Along with high school core courses, art and music also would receive the Arizona schools' standardized final exams; and grades three, six and seven would receive state-designed final exams in social studies.

Each district within the Arizona schools could choose to administer only the state final exams or in addition to their own exams.

The idea of standardized end-of-course exams comes from the Advanced Placement courses that allow Arizona schools' students to earn college credits while in high school. Other states already successfully use the state standardized final exam system. New York gives special diplomas to their students who successfully pass the state standardized end-of-course exams.

    Consistency and Accountability

State standardized testing for the Arizona schools is believed to ensure consistency in teaching across the state. The Arizona schools can, at the state level, determine if individual schools are offering the same quality teaching and learning as schools in other areas of the state. Arizona State University professor Thomas Haladyna believes the state-design and mandated final exams will allow the Arizona schools to determine if children are receiving a good education, eliminating the haphazard teaching that occurs in the schools today and instituting a more systematic approach to teaching.

    Enough Is Enough

Currently, the teachers or districts design final exams for all coursework. The Mesa school system is the largest district in the Arizona schools. They already use district-wide final exams that are created by district teachers, who meet to design the end-of-course exams. Their testing director Joe O'Reilly voiced concerns that the district will lose the local involvement they currently have with state-mandated and designed final exams. He questions the lose of immediacy that the district now has, where exams are given, graded and returned the next day. Besides losing more control to the state, O'Reilly cannot understand how a multiple-choice test can measure student performance in music, painting, or in a chemistry lab.

Arizona schools' parents already complain to school administrators of the amount of homework their children receive in reading, writing and math classes. They continually question whether the overload of work is to help their children learn or to raise the schools' test scores on the Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) exam, securing more funding for the schools.

Arizona schools parents have a right to be concerned, since the proposed final exams will not be used to determine student promotion to the next grade or whether a child graduates high school or not. The Arizona schools' standardized state final exams only determine the rating of each school's performance and will be used along with AIMS test scores and other factors, such as graduation and student attendance rates.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the Los Angeles schools have had several run-ins over the past couple of years. Villaraigosa has been trying to gain control over the Los Angeles schools through both the legislature and the courts. Thus far, his efforts have been only marginally successful, having been given some control at the end of last summer. ```````

This latest drama has at its center a high school student called Zoner. This creative lad, who attends Santee High School, decorated a bus with graffiti in early March of this year. Unfortunately for Zoner, the mayor and Los Angeles schools Superintendent David Brewer were riding on the bus.

Villaraigosa's solution to the situation was that the boy needed mentoring — his mentoring. The mayor proceeded to apply to the Los Angeles schools as a mentor for Zoner.

The Los Angeles schools has a set procedure for potential mentors. They must first complete a one-page application. Then, they must submit to a tuberculosis test and fingerprinting. Finally, they are interviewed by the principal at the school in which they wish to mentor. The entire process can take up to a month to complete.

There currently are 2,000 mentors within the Los Angeles schools, offering a diverse background and experience to the students. Santee High School already has 40-50 mentors on campus at any given week. Movie stars and celebrities give drama and dance lessons. Financial gurus teach students about financial planning and business. Health professionals focus on nutrition and fitness. They have all followed the mentor application process with very little complaint.

Though it is obvious that the procedures have been created for the protection of the children, Villaraigosa has been very vocal about what he sees as jumping through too many hoops. He has publicly accused the Los Angeles schools of rejecting outside help, saying that the extensive procedures are more proof that the Los Angeles schools impede even the best intentions. In his frustration, the mayor has said they are doing everything possible to refuse his assistance with Zoner.

Santee Principal Vince Carbino and his supervisors at the Los Angeles schools, said the mayor must follow the same process as all the other mentor applicants. Carbino further stated that it is his responsibility to deal with Zoner by assisting him with any problems, educating him and focusing on behavioral change in order to ensure the teen graduates and is successful in life. It also is his responsibility to ensure the safety of all students in every area of their school life, including mentors. What Villaraigosa sees as politics, Carbino sees as simply protecting his students.

Additionally, Carbino stated that before the Los Angeles schools can approve the mayor as a mentor to Zoner, the boy must first work with the school's psychiatric social worker for several weeks. Then, the student and his family would decide if they want Villaraigosa's mentoring. He just cannot insinuate himself into Zoner's life without regard to the boy's feelings or his family's wishes.

Los Angeles schools' director of School Volunteer Program is Susan Snelgrove. She has offered to fast track the mayor's application, but she was adamant that he must follow the same procedures as everyone else.

What do Zoner's classmates think about the whole drama? They were not too thrilled about the mayor interfering with a student. They said he could do more good by focusing on making their neighborhoods safer and cleaner.
