Mental activity can keep your mind sharp. Continue to learn and challenge yourself and your brain continues to grow.

Review the following tips to help challenge your brain to continual growth:

    • Learn to play a musical instrument

    • Play scrabble or do crossword puzzles

    • Interact with others

    • Switch careers or start a new one

    • Start a new hobby with crafts, painting, wood-working

    • Learn a foreign language

    • Volunteer

    • Travel

    • Stay informed about world news

    • Read

Taking classes that interest you or just reading more can help you maintain memory longer as you age.

Staying physically active increases blood flow to all parts of the body, including the brain; exercise may even promote cell growth in the brain. Exercise makes you feel more energetic and alert. Just recently I started a membership at a local fitness center. I am amazed at how much better I feel after over one month of daily activity in the fitness center. I walk at a moderate speed on the treadmill for 60 minutes everyday. I started out just five minutes per day, then added one minute each day thereafter.

Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables protect and nourish brain cells. Antioxidants may also help prevent cholesterol from damaging the lining of your arteries and slowing blood flow to your brain. Foods high in antioxidants include:

    • Oranges

    • Berries

    • Broccoli

    • Spinach

    • Carrot

    • Sweet potatoes

    • Tomatoes

You are more likely to gain the health benefits of antioxidants from eating whole foods than by taking supplements.

Heavy drinkers for many years can experience permanent brain damage. Heavy drinkers are also at a higher risk of developing memory problems and dementia. If you drink alcohol, do so moderately. If you do not drink alcohol, do not start. Moderate drinking means for women anyone 65 or older, one drink daily. For men under 65, no more than two drinks daily.

Some evidence shows that "moderate" alcohol consumption may prevent memory loss; this is not clear how. If you already do not drink, don't start just for this reason.

Try to keep stress to a minimum. Chronic stress may cause your brain to release hormones that can damage the brain. Chronic stress can also make you feel depressed or anxious. These are feelings that can interfere with your memory.

Protect your head when doing exercise such as riding a bike. Head injury can increase your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

Smokers may have twice the risk of getting Alzheimer's disease as people who never smoked. It is never too late to stop smoking. You can still reduce risk of memory loss later in life.

If you have a family history of Alzheimer's disease, talk to your doctor, he or she may be able to suggest ways of preventing the disease that would prove helpful to you.

Keeping regular doctor appointments is a good way to monitor blood pressure, cholesterol level and blood sugar level as well as to be sure your thyroid gland is functioning normally. These are easy ways to know what is going on inside your body.

In this article you will learn some simple nutrition facts about alcohol, antioxidants, caffeine and calcium.

Too much alcohol can raise the levels of fats in the blood, lead to high blood pressure, heart failure and increased calories. Too many calories lead to obesity and a higher risk of developing diabetes. Excessive and binge drinking can lead to stroke.

The American Heart Association recommends if you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. Moderation means an average of one to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. A drink is equivalent to 12 oz. of beer, 4 oz. of wine, 1.5 oz. of 80-proof spirits, or 1 oz. of 100-proof spirits. Drinking more than this increases all the health risks as noted above. In addition, it is not possible to predict in which people alcoholism will become a problem. The American Heart Association cautions people not to start drinking if they do not already drink alcohol.

Pregnant women should not drink alcohol in any form; it can harm the baby seriously.

    Antioxidant vitamins

There has been a lot of research recently focused on how antioxidant vitamins may reduce cardiovascular disease risk. The data is incomplete; however, up to 30 percent of Americans are taking some form of antioxidant supplement.

The American Heart Association does not recommend people using antioxidant vitamin supplements until more complete data is available. They recommend people eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods daily from all the basic food groups. Eat a variety of foods low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol to provide a natural source of these vitamins, minerals and fiber.

    Caffeine

The metabolic effects of caffeine include:

    • Stimulates the central nervous system

    • Releases free fatty acids from adipose (fatty) tissue

    • Affects the kidneys by increasing urination, which can lead to dehydration

Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate and some nuts.

The American Heart Association says moderate coffee drinking (1-2 cups per day does not seem to be harmful.

Caffeine withdrawal symptoms may occur 12 to 24 hours after the last dose of caffeine in individuals who are habitual caffeine drinkers. The most prominent symptom is headache. Other withdrawal symptoms may include:

    • Anxiety

    • Fatigue

    • Drowsiness

    • Depression

Although many studies show there is a direct link between caffeine, coffee drinking and coronary heart disease, the results are conflicting.

    Calcium

To help reduce the risk of developing the bone disease osteoporosis most physicians encourage women to eat fat-free and low-fat dairy products to get calcium.

The American Heart Association recommends women should aim to consume between 1,000 and 1,200 milligrams of calcium each day. Excellent sources of calcium include:

    • Fat-free milk

    • Low-fat dairy products

    Other sources of calcium include:

    • Eating vegetable greens like spinach, kale and broccoli

    • Some legumes and soybean products

To date, scientists do not have enough information to know if calcium intake affects the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Adequate daily intake according to data from the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine includes:

    • 210 mg for infants from birth to 6 months, 270 mg for age 6 months to 1 year

    • 500 mg for children age 1-3; 800 mg for ages 4-8

    • 1,300 mg for children and adolescents age 9-18

    • 1,000 mg for adults ages 19-50 (for maximal calcium retention)

    • 1,200 mg for adults ages 51 and older

    • 1300 mg for women who are pregnant and under age 19; 1000 mg for pregnant women ages 19-50

The use of condition-specific supplements more than doubled between 1999 and 2005. There are two possible reasons for this increase:

匹onsumers could be switching from single-nutrient supplements to treat and prevent health issues to combination and condition-specific formulas

柊mericans are more confident of their ability to take care of their own health

Consumers may be switching from single-nutrient supplements to condition-specific formulas because it is an easier and less costly route toward one-stop shopping for health.

Dietary supplements are a way for Americans to self manage and treat specific health issues.

The prevention of specific health issues and medical conditions has become the number one reason why 57% of consumers took a vitamin-mineral supplement for the first time over the past 5 years.

I personally had a rise in triglycerides for the first time. Instead of a prescription drug my doctor elected to try a dietary supplement, Niacin, in the hopes of reducing the triglyceride level. At my last exam, apparently this supplement worked for me. My triglyceride level was lowered after 6 months of taking the dietary supplement of Niacin. It has been more cost effective than a prescription drug.

Young people are specifically interested in improving physical performance as a motivator for starting vitamin and mineral supplements. The number one reason for adults aged 18 to 29 years to go on a vitamin-mineral regimen or make a dietary change is to enhance performance. Weight control is the second reason.

There continues to be steady growth of the belief in vitamin-mineral supplements as an effective means of treating and preventing health problems and conditions.

There is also a growing concern about vitamin-mineral supplements interacting with prescription medications. Some people are dissatisfied about the quantity of pills taken and other people have difficulty swallowing pills.

    Condition-Specific Supplements

Condition-specific supplements are the fastest growing sector of the supplement business. The use of vitamins E and C have dropped since the year 2000. Multivitamin sales continue to grow at a modest rate. Consumers still take vitamin-mineral supplements because they believe their diets lack vitamins and minerals. Calcium and Vitamin C are the most frequently taken vitamin supplements.

For those people who used a condition-specific supplement in 2005, joint pain was the most frequently mentioned condition, after that was for heart health, osteoporosis and arthritis. Also on the rise are vitamin and mineral supplements for osteoporosis and memory concentration.

In 2005, nearly half (44%) of all US supplements sold were for a specific health condition, such as arthritis, joint pain, heart health, osteoporosis, weight loss.

There were 14 conditions that account for 84% of the condition-specific supplement sales in 2005. The top two conditions consumers took condition-specific supplements for was sports/energy/weight/loss and general health. Other conditions include:

    百ports/energy/weight loss

    膝eneral health

    弼oint health

    匹old/flu-immune

    柊nticancer

    菱eart health

    稗one health

    膝astrointestinal health

    疋iabetes

    筆enopause

    稗rain mental

    筆ood

    百exual health

    肘nsomnia

The trend toward taking supplements for condition-specific reasons is expected to continue to grow. Baby Boomers now aged 42 to 60 years and the 72 million Generation Y members who will be the audiences for supplement marketers. Those who are not currently using a supplement say they are most likely to do so to prevent/treat arthritis.

As baby boomers begin to experience age-associated conditions for the first time, they are most likely to opt for supplements directed at particular conditions such as arthritis, cholesterol, wrinkles, eye health, and hypertension.

Webmasters looking for ways to earn extra money from their sites can add Google ads. All you need to is sign up for a Google Adsense account and add a simple code on your site pages. Google Adsense will then run ads on your site that is relevant to your content.

It is possible for webmasters to earn a living from Adsense. It may seem difficult, but it is not impossible.

If you are interested in making Google Adsense your only source of income you do will need to do more than just adding the code to your site. There is experimenting with placements, formats and choice of keywords. Placing the code will earn a webmaster a few extra dollars, but earning a living will require more work on the part of the webmaster.

If you are building sites especially to earn the Google Adsense income you really should build your pages around a specific topic or keyword that is relevant to your site content. This helps Adsense ads to display appropriately on your pages to ensure visitors who want to know more about your topic will more likely end up clicking on the Adsense ad.

Placement of ads can be important. Studies consistently show a visitor often first look to the top left of a website when they first arrive. This could be one of the most important places to place your Google ads. Inside the Google blog is a wealth of information about ad placement and other topics concerning how best to use the Google Adsense Program.

You should place your Google ad code on pages of high traffic, which means you, will need to know which of your website pages receives the most traffic. You can get a page by page detail report of your visitor activity by looking at logs inside your Google account.

It is helpful to blend your Adsense ads into your web pages so that they appear to be part of your content. Inside your Google account you will find a variety of palettes which allow you to change font color, border color and backgrounds. The most important thing here is blending the ads in with the colors and content of your site pages. Use the preview tool provided inside your Adsense account to get an idea of what the ad will look like on your site.

You will find a wealth of helpful information about optimizing your site's pages inside the Google blog.

Review the following tips to improve your Adsense earnings:

    • Try using the large rectangle (336 X 280) wherever you can on your web pages. Some studies show this format has the tendency to result in a higher click through rate. The ads look like normal web links. People seem to be use to clicking on normal web links and will usually click these types of links. Trying to figure out the best means to relief arthritis pain can be frustrating. You can make your arthritis pain worse with activities stressful to your joints and that require repetitive motion when you already have severe joint damage. If you have only mild joint damage, gentle exercise that includes stretching and muscle strengthening can improve arthritis pain.

Arthritis varies from one person to another. You will need to work with your doctor to determine the right solution and exercise program for your specific situation.

Activities such as jogging and playing tennis that put sudden pressure on involved joints are likely to make the symptoms of arthritis worse. Swelling and inflammation may increase. Exercises that strengthen your muscles protect your joints and reduce stress and joint damage should be of help to arthritis symptoms. Strengthening the muscles on the front and back of your thigh, which are the quadriceps and hamstrings; helps protect your knee and hip joints.

The key is to do what you can to stay physically active while taking into consideration the condition of your joints. You may be able to walk a good 30 to 60 minutes at a comfortable pace, but you probably will have to give up high-impact activities like running that puts a lot of stress on many different joints. Swimming or other water exercise may be a better choice for keeping active until you get toned if your joints are too painful for walking.

People with rheumatoid arthritis often have stiffness after rest. Movement tends to diminish some of the symptoms. If you experience excessive stiffness after sitting for a long time you can try adjusting your sitting position often to help prevent or lessen some of this.

You should call your doctor if new pain or persistent pain lasting more than several days occurs. Arthritis symptoms are often more effectively controlled if caught early. If your symptoms are most likely due to overdoing it and they disappear in a few days you probably do not need to call your doctor.

Medications for arthritis are relatively safe and well tolerated by most people. Keep in mind there is no medication that is completely free of possible side effects. If you experience regular arthritis symptoms you need professional advice from your doctor about which medications to take and how much.

    Medications available include:

    •Tylenol

    •Aspirin

    •Ibuprofen

    •Advil

    •Motrin

    •Aleve

    •Naproxen

    •Other anti-inflammatory drugs

Most of the above drugs can be purchased over-the-counter and many of them do bring relief of minor and occasional arthritis pain.

A weekend tennis player, gardeners and other people with mild osteoarthritis can overcome some of the stiffness by taking an over-the-counter NSAID tablet for one or two days. I experienced some hip pain shortly after beginning a new walking routine. My doctor advised taking Ibuprofen just shortly before each work-out, which did alleviate the pain considerably.

If symptoms are prolonged and severe, joint involvement may be more advanced. Your doctor is the best source to decide the dosage that is right for you.

    Alternative treatment for arthritis pain:

Heat, massage and stretching help relieve arthritis symptoms for many people. The best of these treatments should have your doctor or physical therapist's approval. These treatments have also been standard treatments and not so much "alternative" treatment for arthritis pain.

Many alternative preparations have not been adequately studied. Herbal treatments, for example, taken on a day that you might have felt better anyway, may convince you that the herb made you better. Arthritis treatments studies show as many as 30 percent of people taking an inactive substance improve at least temporarily.

Quality standards for over-the-counter alternative drugs do not exist.

It may take years to find an effective and safe medication for your particular arthritis pain. If you try a shortcut standard practice it may lead to harmful effects and wasted money, time and effort.

    Botox Injections:

It is unclear at this time whether or not Botox injections improve pain and function in people with arthritis. Much more research is needed to evaluate the findings of a very small study that suggested injections with Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) may improve pain and function in people with arthritis.

The study reported improvements in pain and function in all participants, however the duration of these benefits varied from three to 12 months. The results were promising and there were no adverse reactions reported. There will need to be much larger, controlled and randomized trials to determine the safety and possible benefit of Botox injections for arthritis.

Antibiotics for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis:

Researchers continue to study the possibility that rheumatoid arthritis may be brought on by some form of infection. If this is true, it may be possible to prevent or stop the progression of the disease with antibiotics. Studies of the usefulness of antibiotic therapy have produced mixed results.

Effects of long-term use of antibiotics are unknown. Antibiotics have many potential side effects, some of which are very serious. More research is needed to determine if antibiotics can be useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Are you trying to decide whether or not to have your baby boy circumcised? Circumcision is fairly common in the United States. It involves the surgical removal of the skin covering the tip of the penis. For some parents, circumcision is a religious ritual. For other parents circumcision is to help with personal hygiene or preventive health care. Still yet other parents feel the procedure seems unnecessary.

In this article, review the pros and cons of having your baby boy circumcised. There are benefits and negatives to the procedure. The American Academy of Pediatrics says the benefits are not strong enough to recommend routine circumcision for all male newborns. The decision is left up to the parents. They also support use of pain relief for infants who have the procedure.

The benefits of circumcision may include:

    • Easier hygiene: Circumcision may make it easier to wash the penis. It is simple to clean an uncircumcised penis as well.

    • Decreased risk of urinary tract infections: Risk of urinary tract infections in the first year may be decreased. Urinary tract infections may be up to 10 times as common in uncircumcised baby boys. Severe urinary tract infections early in life can lead to kidney problems later on.

    • Decreased risk of penile cancer: Cancer of the penis is very rare. It is less common in circumcised men.

    • Decreased risk of sexually transmitted diseases: Circumcised men may have a slightly lower risk of certain sexually transmitted diseases that includes HIV which causes AIDS, and HPV which causes genital warts.

The negatives of circumcision may include:

    • Surgical risks: Excessive bleeding and infection are uncommon, but possible. Foreskin may be cut too short or too long to heal properly. Sometimes the remaining foreskin reattaches to the end of the penis and minor surgery may be needed to correct it.

    • Pain: Circumcision is painful. Local anesthesia blocks nerve sensations during the procedure.

    • Permanence: After the circumcision it may be impossible to re-create the appearance of an uncircumcised penis.

    • Expense: Insurance companies may not cover the cost of circumcision.

    Circumcision care:

It takes about seven to 10 days for the penis to heal. There may be a noticeable yellowish mucus or crust. A small amount of bleeding is common the first day or two. Daily care includes:

    • Washing the penis as it heals

    • Change the bandage with each diaper change

    • Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the tip of the penis so it won't stick to baby's diaper.

Although problems after circumcision are rare, you should call your doctor if:

    • Baby does not urinate normally within six to eight hours after the circumcision

    • Persistent bleeding or redness around the tip of the penis

    • Tip of penis is swollen

    • You suspect an infection. An infection may manifest as a foul-smelling drainage from the tip of the penis, or crusted sores filled with fluid.

One of the best ways to ensure you will not have to compromise between saving your butt or face is to maintain an appropriate weight throughout all your lifetime. Exercise and eat right then when old age comes around there won't be these sudden decisions of which to save – your butt or your face. In this article let us take a glance at some of the more comical sides of the equation.

There is an old cliché that unfortunately is true. When it comes to losing weight, an older woman will have to choose between saving "her butt or her face." This refers to the idea that if you lose too much weight your face may look more haggard and wrinkles may be emphasized. You could get rid of a double chin and end up with a flapping turkey neck instead.

Jowls that have lost their pads of fat could hang and gaunter cheekbones could create a ghoulish or wolfish look on an older face. Eyes could appear more sunken and the skin could lose its dewy sense of tautness. Often older faces that have lost too much weight appear cadaverous or as if they are continually remembering the pain part of another old expression "no pain no gain."

The truth is that a fatter face often looks much younger than a gaunt face. The extra fat pockets plump out hollows in just the right places creating a youthful appearance.

Wrinkles and expression lines such as crow's feet are simply less noticeable and often the skin texture on a plumper woman is simply smoother and healthier looking.

On the other hand, if you keep enough weight on you could end up with a rear end or thighs that are much larger than you originally desired. Notice that many older women with beautiful line free visages and gorgeous complexions usually tend to be apple shaped or pear shaped in their lower body.

So are there any remedies for this all too familiar paradox? Do you really have to sacrifice your looks for a smaller rear end? Does it really have to be one or the other?

Unfortunately the older you are the more inescapable this sordid truth is. You either settle for being slightly heavier or you can spend thousands of dollars on anti -aging serums and plastic surgery to get rid of excess skin and wrinkles caused by the weight loss. Or you can opt to have plumper, less lined features and spend a ton of money getting liposuction on your tummy, thighs and rear end.

If you have a bit of "booty" you are right with the in group as has been demonstrated by sexy superstars such as Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez. Keep in mind that there are also many celebrities who buy padding to insert into their underwear to keep their backsides looking plump and well rounded. This seems so unnecessary when all these "stick insects with mascara" (as Bridget Jones called them) could easily achieve this by consuming a few good meals. If you want to be "cool" you will go for having a slightly bigger butt and a younger face.

Although being thinner is healthier then being too fat, the best compromise is to be the healthiest weight for your age and body shape. Keep in mind too that the people that look the youngest, no matter what their weight, are those that are the happiest and not stressed out by things like calorie restricted diets, painful plastic surgery or even caring too much what other people think. Get plenty of rest and drink plenty of water daily. These are two of the most important skin and beauty products you can apply to yourself. Don't abuse your body with drugs and alcohol. When old age comes around you will be so glad you practice these simple health tips and the truth of whether or not you have taken care of yourself will show in both your face and your "booty."

When it comes to feeding your Shih Tzu always purchase the highest quality of food you can afford. Although the dog is a carnivorous animal, this does not mean that he needs an all-meat diet and nothing else. It has been proven that dogs fed solely on meat are more prone to skin problems than others.

To another extreme are people who insist on feeding their dogs and/or Shih Tzu nothing but vegetables. For one thing, if you do not grow your own vegetables, your dog will be lacking the same vitamin and minerals you lack eating commercially prepared vegetables. Humans are facing a vitamin and mineral shortage in commercially compared vegetables due to chemicals being added to poor soil. So then it is only logical to conclude your Shih Tzu will be facing the same sort of vitamin and mineral shortage unless you grow all your own vegetables.

Furthermore, dogs and/or Shih Tzu are not people. They do not require exactly the same nutrients as humans. I feel it absolute best to purchase the highest quality of commercially prepared dog food for your Shih Tzu from those who are highly trained and professional in these types of matters. There are many excellent brands on the market these days. Do your research. I personally feel HealthyPetNet has one of the best lines of dog products I have ever used. However, you need to find what in particular best nourishes your unique Shih Tzu.

Consult with your vet, although not all vets are highly trained in these matters either. Your vet may be selling a certain type of dog food that may not even be right for your Shih Tzu.

Feeding still remains the most responsibility of the owner. To guard against long term disease and help to prolong your Shih Tzu's life, you should take some time to study the information and research available to you about dog foods and determine what is best for your own unique Shih Tzu.

    Obesity

The Shih Tzu is a charmer. He will charm every bit of food out of you that he most possibly can. If it is your food your Shih Tzu will have a twinkle in his eye and beg so pitiful that you will feel as though you absolutely must give him not one bite, but half your meal if he stands begging for it. Do not be fooled by this charmer. He does not need your food too. Bites here and there are enough and make it clear to him that is absolutely all he is getting of your lasagna tonight!

One of the main reasons for obesity in the Shih Tzu is feeding him "your food." Avoid this as much as possible. Likewise, the Shih Tzu can be just as charming begging for his own food. Feed him the recommended allowance per day and do not give in to his charming ways of asking for more.

Shih Tzu of all ages enjoys edible Nylabones. Give him one occasionally, but do not leave one out continuously. They will feast on Nylabones as well and I have seen them eat the Nylabones so heartily and as quickly as possible until they throw up. Most of my Shih Tzu just loves the edible Nylabones. They are good for them, but not continuously. I see those eating Nylabones as humans will start with a few Doritos and suddenly the whole bag is gone. I usually feel much worse on the last bite than the first. This is the same with Nylabones and the Shih Tzu.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

I write more about obesity in the Shih Tzu than I do about a Shih Tzu that could be "too thin." In general, the Shih Tzu breed is a hearty breed. My Shih Tzus have been hearty and healthy. This is true even for my Teacup and Imperial sizes. They tend more toward wanting to eat too much. Yet there is always another side to every story or an opposite position. A Shih Tzu too thin is quite apparently the opposite of a Shih Tzu being obese. This type of Shih Tzu might also be nicknamed "a poor doer." It is often, however, that a concerned Shih Tzu owner will think their Shih Tzu is one of these "poor doers," when in fact the vet may tell you the dog is in excellent condition. A healthy Shih Tzu is not a plump Shih Tzu, although some in the show dog world continues to confuse "well-bodied" with "fat." The standard for the Shih Tzu calls for it to be "compact," which I suppose can also mean "well-bodied." A compact Shih Tzu is one that is just that – Compact – not fat and flabby.

One of the first things to check when dealing with a Shih Tzu that is actually underweight despite eating normally is that has the Shih Tzu been wormed regularly? There is nothing worse than the presence of worms for keeping a Shih Tzu or any dog "thin." So of very much importance is keeping your Shih Tzu wormed properly. If this has been done regularly and your Shih Tzu is still thin, you really need to consult with your vet. There could be an underlying health problem such as diabetes. When all health problems have been ruled out by your vet oftentimes just the increase of quality food intake is sufficient to put some meat on the bones of a Shih Tzu and help to accomplish that neat compact look called for in the standard. You will probably want to go with a diet that is high in calories. Offer nutritional and high calorie treats as well. You might even treat your underweight Shih Tzu to some homemade deserts, treats and food in addition to his high quality commercially prepared food.

It is very difficult to deal with the reluctant eater. Sometimes this could be a behavior issue. For that, one must consult with a dog psychiatrist I suppose. And to be perfectly honest with you, I am not sure these actually exist. That is only my first thought. My next thought would be to surf the internet and my new website in particular About Toy Dogs. At About Toy Dogs I am searching and surfing the internet for you. I have a collection of dog training books from Dogwise you might be interested in looking at on the site. On the site you will also find a collection of other internet dog trainers programs. At any rate, regardless of the problem, and because of the human's keen interest in dogs these days I know for certain someone has come up with a solution to your problem if it is determined "behavior."

Shih Tzu is extremely intelligent and clever. They will challenge you in intelligence. I continue to believe they understand much more of what is really going on in their environment than people realize. If they get a hint you are going to "pamper" them about eating, they may hold it over on you and try to see just exactly what you will offer them in the way of "different foods" for them to try.

I suppose how I would like to conclude this article is if you think your Shih Tzu is too thin, first rule out worms and health problems. Then proceed slowly at finding ways to add extra calories to your Shih Tzu's diet. Don't panic about the situation and don't ever let your Shih Tzu know you are "worried" about its thin condition. I do not breed Shih Tzu specifically for the show ring or even specifically to sell puppies to others. I live with the Shih Tzu as a keen interest in exactly who the Shih Tzu truly is. I am fascinated by their personalities and behaviors, and I am learning firsthand just how clever the Shih Tzu can be about all situations in a household. If I did not know it impossible, I would say for sure the Shih Tzu is actually another form of a highly intelligent perhaps genius "human being."

This breed was named for the Cavalier King, who ruled Great Britain in the 1700s.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is usually a pampered house dog that requires frequent and careful combing and brushing to prevent matting. It is an ideal house pet and family companion that socializes well with other family pets. The Cavalier King Charles is noted to be particularly good with children. He has very few quirks in his personality and not many hang-ups either, which helps to make him a good companion for children.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is active and high-spirited. He enjoys pleasing his family in every way possible. The Cavalier King Charles is loving and loveable. Among his assets are intelligence and obedience. He is usually ready for walks or play time but will be just as content by himself dozing near his family when asked. This dog is charming and usually undemanding. The Cavalier King Charles also makes a good companion to senior citizens, young families and singles as well.

His exercise requirements are easily accomplished in daily household activities. His need for exercise is not great, although as mentioned above, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel does enjoy walks with his loved ones. If walking with his loved ones is not available he is just as content romping around in the backyard.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel enjoys consistent training. He will bond well with the entire family. He is blessed with an even and fairly predictable temperament. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel adjust well to most situations. They are especially good for agility and obedience training. They are fine athletes.

The roots of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as with all true Spaniels are probably found in Spain, although the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel claims origin in seventeenth-century England. It is felt by some historians that the breed probably has some of the ancient Oriental toy breeds among its ancestors as well. King Charles II favored a Cavalier type that evolved into a dog with a shorter muzzle and lighter body. In the early 1900s selective breeding created a swing back to the original head and body type.

Originally, Spaniels were sporting dogs used mostly to flush and retrieve game birds. In the 1600s the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel served a similar function, but the principal purpose at this time was to provide pleasure for its English royalty owners. They would lie at the feet in the beds of Kings and provide warmth to the master's feet. They provided companionship for dukes and earls.

The English Kennel Club distinguished them from the King Charles spaniel in 1945 as a separate breed by the addition of the Cavalier to its name. There was a long period of discord among American Cavalier fanciers. However, the breed was recognized by AKC in 1996.

The Cavalier King Charles stands 12 to 13 inches tall and weighs 10 to 18 pounds. He resembles a miniature hunting spaniel with a moderately long, full muzzle, long, high-set ears and a long or docked tail.

The coat of a Cavalier King Charles is soft, gently-waving and longish hair that is almost like silk. The red and white color type is called Blenheim after the Duke of Marlborough's estate. Other acceptable colors of the Cavalier King Charles are solid red, black and white and tricolor. The tricolor is a combination of black and white with russet brown accents.

Article Title: A Little Bit About The Havanese

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

The Havanese is a shaggy little dog of ancient European lineage. The ancient Havanese breed has common ancestors with the Barbichon, Bichon and Maltese. It is felt the Havanese probably traveled with Mediterranean trading ships from Europe and the Canaries to the Caribbean islands.

In the 1700s the Havanese was bred and owned by rich landowners and the plantation aristocracy of Cuba. These little dogs were also clever at performing in circuses during this period of time after it lost its popularity in these prominent society circles of Cuba.

The Havanese has always been admired most for its intelligence and adaptability. It is an excellent companion dog. The Havanese migranted from Cuba to the United States in the 1950s and was admitted to the AKC in 1999.

    Grooming the Havanese

The coat of a Havanese is long and silky and tangles easily. It can be wavy or slightly curled. Grooming will need to be carried out frequently. The double, wavy and profuse coat isn't trimmed for normal purposes or the show ring except for nominal scissoring of foot hair. Havanese pets are either clipped or scissored down to a manageable length. The Havanese is seen in all colors from black to white.

You will want to achieve a loose, natural look for the Havanese. Brush through the entire coat to removing any tangles. Then comb the coat with a wide-toothed comb.

Brush along the back. When the Havanese shakes his hair it should fall nautrally in a parting. Do not try to make a perfectly straight part. A topknot can be tied up away from the eyes. Topknots are not usually used in the show ring.

    Grooming Equipment Needed

You will need a pin brush, a wide-toothed comb and a slicker brush. The slicker brush is used on tough tangles, otherwise use the pin brush for normal daily brushing because the slicker brush can be too harsh on the Havanese coat.

    Exercise Requirements

The Havanese exercise needs are easily met. A short walk, a romp a day with the kids in the backyard is about all it needs to stay in good physical shape.

    Personality

The Havanese is sensitive, playful, friendly, accommodating, affectionate and comical. The Havanese is outgoing and adapts easily to adults. The Havanese gets along well with other pets. He is highly trainable. He does not respond well to yelling. He wants to please. The Havanese has a good memory and is quick to learn.

    Appearance

The Havanese is generally about 10 inches tall and weighs about 10 pounds. He is a sturdy little dog. He is not delicate or frail. The Havanese is quite athletic. The legs of a Havanese are usually short, straight and strong. Pigmentation of nose, lip and eye margins is always black or solid dark brown on chocolate brown dogs. He has a "happy" sort of a look with his drop ears, straight topline, high tail set and animated gait.

The Havanese is usually good with children of all ages. They are not frail and delicate so even smaller children can learn to handle a Havanese with ease.

Article Title: Just How Natural Are The "natural" Ingredients In Beauty Products!

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

It is probably the best to just make your own "natural" beauty products if you want to ensure they actually contain "all natural ingredients." There are several good companies providing organic based ingredients to facilitate making your own products. Natural cosmetics are easy to make in the home using nothing more than regular kitchen equipment.

This article takes a brief look at how beauty product manufacturers tell us what is in their products.

The market in beauty products has grown significantly in the last 25 years but in the last 10 years there has been an increasing interest in the ingredients contained within the lotions, creams and potions we apply so liberally to our skin - the largest organ of our human bodies.

Many main stream manufacturers still include a range of not so natural ingredients in their products:

    - waste products from the petrochemical industry

    - lead and other heavy metals

    - products extracted from animal carcasses

Many of these ingredients are given scientific sounding names. While the cynic may say this is a deliberate attempt to confuse the consumer, a more charitable view is that this is done in pursuit of accurate labeling.

As a result of the heightened awareness of health matters and the confusion concerning ingredients and labeling, a new sector of this lucrative market has arisen, which is the need for natural skin care and cosmetics.

But just how natural is natural?

Many consumers require natural ingredients but are not prepared to accept the necessary compromise in product performance. A classic example is with the ingredient Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. This is a synthetic detergent derived from coconut oil and it appears in a wide range of shampoos, bath products, toothpastes and liquid soaps. It is what gives these products the luxurious bubbles and lather to which we have all become accustomed. A number of studies have suggested that this ingredient is harmful and many consumers now seek products containing an alternative.

Manufacturers then developed Sodium Laureth Sulphate, which is considered less irritating than Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. When this was condemned, Ammonium Laureth Sulphate and Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate were substituted. Once again these are synthetic detergents developed from coconut oil and they are still considered to be an irritant. Some studies have also suggested they may be carcinogenic.

Unless consumers have knowledge of bio-chemistry it is almost impossible to discern what ingredients are natural and what are not. The SLS saga is but one example of this confusion.

It is ironic that a number of "natural" manufacturers aggressively promote their products by denigrating the products of competing companies - despite the fact that the ingredients they contain are essentially the same.

Consumers need to make themselves aware of the real meanings behind the mysterious names on their cosmetic bottles and jars and educate themselves about the various aliases they are likely to encounter.

Depending on the reasons for wanting to purchase natural products, some ingredients may be more acceptable than others. Take Lanolin for example. Lanolin is extracted from the fleece of sheep. It has been shown to contain a large number of chemicals used to kill parasites that may live on the sheep. Many eczema sufferers find that treatment with lanolin based products - despite the chemicals - helps to reduce symptoms. The benefits of Lanolin treatment outweigh the disadvantage of potential contaminants. This is a value judgment that individuals will need to make.

In conclusion, one of the best ways to ensure that your products are natural is to make them yourself. There are a growing number of companies providing organic based ingredients to facilitate home manufacture of products. Natural cosmetics are surprisingly easy to make in the home using nothing more than regular kitchen equipment. This may be an alternative worth checking-out.

According to a survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association, 47% of Americans have experienced some form of foot pain in their life. Foot pain can affect every part of the foot, including the sole, arch, heel, and toes. Most causes of foot pain can be treated very easily, but there are different circumstances where surgery is necessary.

Some of the most common causes of foot pain include:

    1). Bunions

This is a very common condition that affects the base of the big toe. It occurs when the big toe gets pushed toward the second toe.

Treatment: As soon as you notice a bunion forming, switch to wider, more comfortable shoes. If the bunion is severe and results in deformity or relentless foot pain, surgery may be needed. If surgery is suggested, get a 2nd opinion.

    2). Plantar Fasciitis

If you experience foot pain in your heal when you wake up in the morning, chances are you have plantar fasciitis. This irritating foot pain means the band of tissue connecting your heel to your toes is inflamed.

Treatment: Stretching and rest will help you deal with the foot pain associated with plantar fasciitis. In some cases, anti-inflammatory medication is prescribed.

    3). Corns

Corns are thickened skin on toes or side of the foot. They are typically caused by poor-fitting shoes.

Treatment: The foot pain experienced by corns can be easily eased by wearing properly-fitted shoes. If the foot pain is severe because of an infection around the corn, antibiotics may be prescribed. For immediate relief of foot pain, soak your foot in warm water, and then rub down the corn with a pumice stone, found in most drug stores.

    4). Heel Spurs

A heel spur is a small hook of bone that forms on the heel bone. Heel spurs occur in almost 70% of patients with planter fasciitis. See a podiatrist is you think you have either condition. The podiatrist can determine the condition by taking and reviewing an X-Ray.

Treatment: Do not use heel inserts because they can increase your foot pain caused by heel spurs. Treatment may range from cortisone shots, to physical therapy, to a pair of customer made orthonics.

    5). Tendonitis

Over time, wear and tear affects the tendons in the foot, specifically the Achilles tendon. Those who suffer from Achilles tendonitis liken the foot pain to a sharp smack to the back of the heel.

Treatment: Initially, doctors will prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, to alleviate foot pain. Physical therapy may also be recommended in order to strengthen the muscles.

If after two weeks of self treatment, your foot pain still persists, see your doctor or a podiatrist. Also, if you cannot bear weight on the foot, or if there is bruising, deformity, or blood present, a trip to the doctor is mandatory.

People with chronic headaches often have pain 25 or more days a month, pain that is far more debilitating than scientists previously thought, according to an Ohio University researcher who is leading a study of 245 chronic headache sufferers.

Results from the study found that 66 percent of participants have headaches nearly every day.

The research was presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Headache in San Francisco.

Weekly records kept by patients indicate that more than 70 percent record disrupted sleep, fatigue and headache-related anxiety or stress. Forty-four percent say their headaches affect their performance at work or school and 72 percent said the pain caused them to miss work or school an average of 3.5 days in the last six months.

Unfortunately, chronic headache pain disrupts the lives of millions of people worldwide. Thankfully, there are ways to treat the debilitating discomfort of tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches. But, how do you know which kind of chronic headache pain treatment is right for you?

Chronic headache pain treatment includes medication or natural remedies. The first step is to visit your doctor to find out what kind of headache you have, and if it is chronic, then, a chronic headache pain treatment will be suggested by your doctor. Also, consider getting a second opinion just to be on the correct side of the diagnosis.

To be considered for chronic headache pain treatment, a person must have acute pain on a regular basis that is not cured by over-the-counter drugs, such as such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil).

    Medication

Doctor-prescribed, brand-name medications are used frequently as chronic headache pain treatment methods. Medications, such as Imetrex or Maxalt, are typically used to treat chronic headache pain associated with migraines and cluster headaches. And, in very severe cases, strong narcotic painkillers, like Oxycodon and Vicodine, may be used as part of a chronic headache pain treatment plan. However, many doctors agree that a chronic headache pain treatment plan cannot consist of medication alone.

Seddon Savage, MD, a pain specialist from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire says, "Treatment for chronic pain is about much more than medication. It can also involve stress relief and relaxation, physical therapy, improved sleep and nutrition habits, and exercise."

    Alternative Methods

Medication is not for everybody. If you would rather find a more natural way to treat your pain, there are many alternative methods of chronic headache pain treatment.

    • Acupuncture. Traditional Chinese acupuncture therapy uses small needles that are inserted into specific points of the body. Many people swear by this chronic headache pain treatment

    • Acupressure. If acupuncture needles frighten you, you may want to try acupressure. Instead of needles, acupressure relies on fingertips to stimulate channels of energy in the body.

    • Fragrant Oils. Some oils have been proven to be great chronic headache pain treatments. Try using peppermint oil, chamomile, rosemary, or lavender to alleviate your pain. Keep in mind, a little oil goes a long way.

Since pain varies from person to person, Chronic Headache pain treatment is individualized. While medication may work perfectly for some, acupuncture or acupressure works better for others.

Painful shoulder conditions that limit movement are common, and are caused by problems with the shoulder joint and its surrounding structures. Your shoulder is more prone to injuries than other joints because of its wide range of movement.

About 13.7 million people went to the doctor's office in 2003 for a shoulder problem, including 3.7 million visits for shoulder and upper arm sprains and strains. (Source: National Center for Health Statistics; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2003 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey.)

One of the best ways to avoid injury is to keep physically fit, with a balanced program of aerobic exercise, stretching and strengthening exercises for your whole body. There is a range of exercise programs available from local fitness centers, to online services and even downloads for your MP3 or iPod players.

Here are some of the common causes of shoulder pain.

There are several reasons that cause pain and limit movement of your shoulder joint, including:

    1. Rotator cuff disorders

Inflammation can be caused by general wear and tear that occurs with age, activities that require constant or repetitive shoulder motion (especially above shoulder level), heavy lifting, trauma, or poor posture. Serious injuries and untreated inflammation of the tendons can cause the rotator cuff to tear.

The pain associated with rotator cuff problems is normally felt at the front or on the outside of your shoulder, particularly when you raise your arm or lift something above your head. You may also notice the pain more when lying in bed. Severe injuries can cause weakness of the shoulder muscles, restricted shoulder movement and continuous pain.

    2. Rotator cuff tears

It is usually the rotator cuff tendons (the thick bands of tissue that connect the muscles to the bones) that tear, but sometimes the tear occurs in the muscle. Severe injuries can cause several of the tendons and muscles to tear. There are special movement tests that your doctor can use to help determine which of the muscles or tendons has been torn.

    3. Frozen shoulder

Frozen shoulder, is characterized by progressive pain and stiffness in the shoulder. The pain is felt deep in the shoulder joint and may become worse at night due to inactivity.

The exact cause of this condition is not known, but it sometimes develops following other shoulder injuries. Resting a painful, injured shoulder for too long can cause the shoulder muscles and connective structures to stiffen up, so when a shoulder injury occurs make an effort to keep it loose without putting to much strain on it.

Frozen shoulder can develop spontaneously, particularly if you have thyroid problems or diabetes seem to be at increased risk. Most people with frozen shoulder tend to improve within 2 years, with or without treatment. In the interim, however it can be quite painful.

    4. Dislocated shoulder and shoulder instability

A dislocated shoulder is visibly deformed or out of place, and there may be swelling or bruising around the joint. Your shoulder movement will be severely restricted. Your Doctor can usually put the shoulder bone back into place using gentle maneuvers.

If you suffer a dislocation, keep in mind that the shoulder joint sometimes becomes unstable and susceptible to repeated dislocations. This causes pain and unsteadiness when you raise your arm or move it away from your body. Your shoulder may feel as if it is slipping out of place when you lift your arm over your head.

    5. Arthritis

Arthritis causes progressive joint pain, tenderness, swelling and stiffness. Both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis will affect the shoulder joint.

Sometimes shoulder pain can be due to problems in your neck or a mixture of several different problems. A visit to your doctor is almost always necessary when it comes to a shoulder problem because in rare instances, shoulder pain may be caused by infection, problems with the nerves, or a tumor located somewhere else in your body.

What tests are needed to determine the cause of your shoulder pain?

As with any medical issue, a shoulder problem is generally diagnosed using a three-part process:

    • Medical History – You tell your doctor about any injury or other condition that might be causing the pain.

    • Physical Examination – Your doctor examines you by feeling for injury and to discover the limits of movement, location of pain, and extent of joint instability.

    • Tests – Your doctor may order one or more of the tests for you listed below to make a specific diagnosis.

Your doctor will determine the cause of your pain based on your symptoms and a physical examination. Where the pain is felt, both at rest and when moving the shoulder, is a clue to the cause of the shoulder pain. Your doctor will also test your shoulder strength and the range of movement in your shoulder joint.

You may need an X-ray, or other scans, such as an ultrasound scan or MRI. Sometimes, an arthroscopy is needed. In this test, your doctor can look inside the shoulder joint using a small telescopic instrument that has a camera on the end. This is not as painful as it sounds.

How your shoulder pain will be treated

In addition to relieving pain, treatment is aimed at restoring mobility in your shoulder joint. The choice of treatment depends on the extent of your shoulder problem and the level of pain.

Pain relievers such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often used as an initial treatment for shoulder pain. Ibuprofen is the best and Aspirin should be avoided.

Another simple way of easing shoulder pain is by applying a cold pack to your shoulder for 10 minutes at a time three or four times a day. Cold packs will reduce inflammation, and are most helpful when applied for the first few days following a shoulder injury. After that, you can switch to using a heat pack; intermittent applications of heat can help relax the shoulder muscles.

A heat pad used at night when sleeping will keep the shoulder from stiffing up.

You should rest your shoulder for a couple of days after an injury, and if you have dislocated your shoulder, you may need to rest your arm in a sling or splint for several weeks after the joint has been manipulated back into place.

However, with most shoulder problems it isn't a good idea to rest for too long. While you should avoid strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects, you should still move your shoulder to help make sure that you regain full use of the joint. By returning to your normal activities as soon as possible (within the limits of disability and pain), you can help prevent the shoulder joint from stiffening up.

Physiotherapy can help treat you shoulder pain.

Physiotherapy can help improve your shoulder strength and flexibility as well as relieve the pain associated with most shoulder problems. Physiotherapists use a variety of different therapies, including massage, ultrasound therapy, laser therapy and electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) — a therapy that uses mild electrical currents to treat pain.

Taping the shoulder joint can also help stabilize it and reduce pain during activities. Your doctor will refer you to a good Physiotherapist is he feels the extent of your injury warrants Physiotherapy.

Physiotherapists can also teach you special rehabilitation exercises to stretch and strengthen the rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder. Exercises that improve your shoulder's range of movement help reduce the pain and stiffness that occurs after a period of immobility. Range of motion exercises may be followed by resistance exercises and weight training to strengthen the muscles.

Steroid injections can be effective but proceed with caution.

Depending on the cause of your shoulder problem, corticosteroid injections may be given to relieve the pain in the short term. The corticosteroid, which is often mixed with a local anesthetic, reduces inflammation and allows you to move the shoulder more comfortably. Make sure you understand what is involved in this kind of treatment to include the long term effect on your body. The jury is still out on the impact of this type of treatment.

Surgery may be necessary to treat your shoulder problem.

Because most people improve with the above treatments, only about 10 per cent of people with shoulder problems will need to be treated with surgery. People with shoulder instability or rotator cuff problems that are not responding to less invasive treatments may benefit from an operation, and shoulder joint replacement may be considered for people with degenerative arthritis.

There are also some conditions that need to be treated initially with an operation, including some rotator cuff tears and dislocated shoulders that cannot be reduced (put back in) with simple manual maneuvers. Sometimes frozen shoulder is treated with what's known as manipulation under anesthesia. In this therapy, your shoulder is gently moved while you are under a general anesthetic to help improve its range of motion and of course avoid the treatment pain.

So make sure you do not self-diagnosis your shoulder problem, see your doctor. Keep in mind that it isn't a good idea to rest it for too long or it will stiffen up. Use Cold and Heat intermittingly to speed up the healing process. Avoid strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects, but remember to move your shoulder to help make sure that you regain full use of the joint by returning to your normal activities as soon as possible and you will regain full use of your shoulder in a reasonable period of time.

But, if you are still experiencing pain, listen to it, it is a signal trying to tell you something is still wrong with your shoulder.

When your child gets hurt, and complains of pain, what do you use to treat the hurt and the injury?

A new study in the latest issue of Pediatrics, looks at three commonly used medicines for kids' pain…and found which one works best. To date, there hasn't been a lot of research into NASIDs and the like OTC drugs and their impact on children, which is why this new study sheds a lot of light on the issue.

Eight year old Lovie Taylor is dealing with a lot of pain. "Lovie is here today because she had surgery, very intense surgery. A lot of pain, we came into the emergency room, she was in an awful lot of pain," says Rhonda, Lovie's Grandma.

Morphine is Lovie's drug du jour.

But for most kids who come to the ER, or even are just treated at home, the pain can be managed with less intense medicine than codeine for instance.

But which one is really the best? Tylenol? Ibuprofen? What about a narcotic like codeine? What about Topicals?

The research, in the latest issue of Pediatrics, compared acetaminophen, which is what tylenol is, ibuprofen, which is what motrin is, and codeine.

The study looked at how well the medications worked for musculoskeletal injuries to the neck, back, arms or legs in kids who came to the emergency room for a period of several months.

Codeine, which is a narcotic, is associated with more side effects than ibuprofen, so it appears there's little reason to use it, so make sure there is a really good reason for using it before it is applied to your child.

The findings clearly show a pain relief advantage to ibuprofen, which acts both centrally in the brain pain centers and at the site of injury. Paste...

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine that has been around for more than 2500 years and is becoming an increasingly popular treatment for back pain.

According to the theory of acupuncture, energy—called chi or qi—flows through the body along pathways called meridians. If the flow of chi is interrupted, pain or illness can occur. When that happens, very thin needles can be inserted along the meridians to correct the flow of chi.

Like all back pain treatments, acupuncture seems to be most effective when used in conjunction with other treatments. It is also very safe, with no known risks as long as you choose a reputable practitioner. Needles are sterile, disposable, and FDA-approved. In the US they are used only one time, sealed before use, and disposed as hazardous waste after treatment.

During an acupuncture treatment session, the practitioner will insert anywhere from one to twenty needles into various places in the body. Some needles may go in just under the skin, while others may go deeper into muscle and fat.

Needles will be left in from fifteen to thirty minutes. The practitioner may turn needles one way or another after inserting them into the body, or leave some in for only a few seconds before removing them and inserting them elsewhere in the body.

You may be surprised to learn that acupuncture is rarely described as painful. In fact, many people find it relaxing and even fall asleep during treatment. Some people feel energized. One reason for this is the type of needles used. Acupuncture needles are very different from hypodermic needles. Instead they are very thin and fine, like hair. They are also solid, whereas hypodermic needles are not, as they are made to extract tissue.

So getting acupuncture needles inserted into your skin will feel nothing like getting a shot at the doctor's office.

Since some medical doctors also practice acupuncture, you will want to make sure they are licensed in acupuncture in addition to their other training.

To check if a practitioner is licensed and accredited, contact the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Twenty-Eight million Americans' experience pain from migraine headaches and a great many have no clue as to what to do about it. That means about one person in every four household's experiences throbbing head pain. Usually one side of the head, sometimes accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and/or sound. Some people may experience an "aura" before the migraine hits, characterized by flashes of light, zigzag lines, blind spots and numbness or tingling in the arm and face.

Migraine pain can last from 4 to 72 hours, knocking a person out of commission. But much can be done to minimize attacks and ease the symptoms.

This article contains advice from Seymour Diamond, MD director and founder of the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago, who states that pain may be triggered by certain foods, stress, and a drop in barometric pressure or fluctuating hormones. But migraine triggers vary from person to person and what causes a migraine one month may not the next. That's why Dr. Diamond has patients keep a diary that notes when headaches occurred and what brought them on.

In about one third of pain sufferers, certain kinds of foods set off a migraine. Potential triggers include ripened cheeses such as cheddar, Stilton, Brie, Emmentaler and Camembert; pickled or dried meats; and some vegetables, including broad, Lima, Fava beans and Snow Peas.

Pain Sufferers should also consider avoiding citrus fruits, figs, raisins, avocados, red plums, papayas, and bananas, plus skip all cheeses, chocolate, bread made with sourdough, excess caffeine or red wine an foods containing mono-sodium glutamate.

If you can't change a situation that's causing stress, at least "put it in perspective," states Dr. Diamond. To control stress, do deep breathing, learn yoga, or rat chi, or consider biofeedback.

Playing video games can trigger a migraine pain attack, as can spending long hours at the computer. Remember to always wear sunglasses when you are outdoors, and place an antiglare screen on your video monitor.

At the Diamond Headache Clinic, doctors counsel against oversleeping and meal skipping. "If you want to sleep in on a Saturday at least get up and eat something," says Dr. Diamond, "Then go back to bed."

The American Migraine Study II found that only 48% of people whose symptoms met the definition of a migraine had been diagnosed by a doctor.

So, work with your doctor on a therapy plan that's right for you. Some medications help keep migraine from occurring; others short-circuit the pain. Make sure you go through a process of elimination of all elements affecting your life-style and investigate your biological needs to filter out those things that work and those that don't when it comes to dealing with Migraine pain.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Migraine headaches do not just drop out of the sky on some poor person. If you are suffering from migraine headaches, there are probably physical causes behind your condition, and there are steps you can take tavoid the frequent recurrence of the headaches. Some of the food that you are eating may in fact be the "trigger" that sets off your migraine attack, and it is helpful to know which common foods are known to start migraine headaches.

Before I go into a discussion about the kinds of foods that often cause migraine headaches, it is important to understand that food alone is not the only factor associated with migraine attacks. Other contributors include stress, hormones, emotional factors and even some medications. In addition, some foods that trigger migraines in one person, may not affect another person. That said let's take a look at the commonest kinds of food associated with the onset of migraine attacks.

The foods which can cause difficulty include the following:

    • peanuts and peanut butter

    • caffeine in all products, not just coffee

    • dairy products

    • yeast

    • some beans (which includes peanut), as well as broad, lima , Italian, lentil, soy, peas

    • avocados

    • dried meats

    • sauerkraut

    • pickled herrings

    • canned soups and packet soup mixes

    • chicken livers

    • ripe banana

    • soy products as well as the bean itself

    • sodium nitrate, which is used to preserve hot dogs, bacon and cured meats

    • the preservative benzoic acid and its associated compounds

    • MSG, common name for monosodium glutamate, a flavor enhancer which is now in almost universal use in almost all processed foods

    • nuts

    • sourdough breads

    • cheeses which have been aged

    • red wines, beer, champagne, vermouth

    • chocolate

    • anchovies

If the list above seems depressingly long, the good news is that most of the items in this list come from highly processed and manufactured food products. These foods aren't too difficult to identify, test, and eliminate from your diet. You just have to pay attention when shopping, when preparing food and when sitting down to eat your meal.

    Hold the Cheese Please!

If you are a cheese lover, and you also are susceptible to migraines, then you have to pay attention to what kinds of cheese you eat. Aged cheeses are high in tyramine, a substance that forms during the breakdown of protein. The longer cheese ages, the greater the tyramine content becomes. If you sensitive to tyramine then these are the cheeses that you should avoid:

    • Blue cheeses

    • Brie

    • Cheddar

    • Stilton

    • Feta

    • Gorgonzola

    • Mozzarella

    • Muenster

    • Parmesan

    • Swiss

    • Processed cheese

Cheese is not the only food that has high tyramine levels. Other foods high in tyramine include processed meats, pickles, onions, olives, certain types of beans, raisins, nuts, avocados, canned soups, and red wine.

Doctors concede it can be difficult to avoid all of these foods. Nestor Galvez-Jimenez, MD, a neurologist with The Cleveland Clinic in Florida, says some of his tyramine-sensitive patients find it difficult to avoid foods that are on the "stop list," especially wine. "They want to drink wine even if they know it will give them a headache. In that case, I recommend a preventive dose of medication before dinner." He adds that patients should discuss this idea with their doctors before trying it.

    Avoid Additives

Whenever you buy processed foods it is important to read the labels carefully because several food additives, such as nitrites, food colorings and artificial sweeteners, are also common headache triggers. Doctors are not 100% sure why these additives can trigger migraines but suspect that they increase the flow of blood to the brain and bring about changes in blood vessels.

Unlike other migraines which are triggered by a food substance and are felt on one side of the head, headaches induced by additives or other substances are usually sensed on both sides of the head. In addition, additive-triggered migraines usually occur within a specific time after taking the additive and they disappear when the additive is eliminated or within a specific time thereafter.

Monosodium glutamate-induced headaches, sometimes known as Chinese restaurant syndrome, occur within an hour after ingestion of MSG and can cause at least two of the following symptoms:

    • Pressure in the chest or face

    • Burning sensation in the chest, neck, or shoulders

    • Dizziness

    • Abdominal discomfort

MSG is not only found in Chinese food but is used as a flavor enhancer in a wide variety of snacks and other manufactured foods, so once again it is important to read the labels carefully when shopping for your household groceries or even when grabbing a quick snack.

As I mentioned in the beginning, the ingestion of specific foods is not the only cause of migraine attacks, and the foods that trigger these attacks vary from person to person. However, if you are suffering from frequent migraine headaches then it makes sense to consult your physician and to do your best to eliminate the foods that may be contributing to your discomfort. For most discomforts, we reach for NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). They are very effective, but when "when people take inbuprofen, aspirin, ketpprofen or naproxen sodium, they figure since those drugs are OTC so they must be safe.

As a result they overdo them, or don't pay attention to interactions with other medications," says Joseph Markenson, MD, professor at Weill Medical College in New York City. "While the benefits of thee drugs are enormous and real, so too are the risks of gastrointestinal upset and bleeding.

With any OTC pain reliever, start low and go slow, says Dr. Fishman. He also suggests,"Don't use aspirin as your first choice for pain relief. It is short acting as far as pain goes, but long-acting in its impact on platelets and blood coagulation, and has a greater risk of causing ulcers than ibuprofen for example".

"You can protect yourself from ulcers related to NSAIDs," says Dr. Markenson. take them with an OTC or prescription proton pump inhibitor (PPI) or opt for a pure analgesic such as acetaminophen, which offer relief from headaches, muscle aches and fever, but does not cause bleeding.

Acetaminophen poses little threat when taken as recommended, but liver toxicity is a risk if you drink alcohol, have liver disease or are also taking an NSAID or any additional medication that contains aetaminophen.

And make sure you tell your pharmacist and doctor what prescription meds you take, especially phenobarbital, phenytoin (Dilantin), carbamazepine (Tegretol), rifampin (Rimactane, Rifadin), sulfinpyrazone (Anturane) and vitamin supplements. Surprised to find out that your "harmless" vitamin supplement can set off adverse reactions to medications? They can and plenty of research exists to prove that supplements can set off dangerous reactions when taken with OTC drugs.

"When it comes to decisions about pain relief", says Dr. Fishman, "you have to think about what makes sense for you and with individual risks and benefits. Is the pain affecting

your quality of life? Do you need a pain reliever to stay on track every day? Can you get rid of your headache for example some other way? Proceed cautiously".

And don't ignore pain, ever. It is trying to tell you something. The bottom line is to find out what the problem is and take corrective action before things get worse.

Choosing effective small business keywords can be an intimidating task. Everyone knows that going to search for anything on a major search engine like Google can often return thousands of results. But does that mean defeat for your local small business? No!

There are a lot of things that can be done to get your local Web site noticed by your local customer base. Five of those techniques are invaluable in guiding you to success.

    1. Use Phrases

Phrases can make a world of a difference in what can be found through search engines. Type in any single word and you're bound to find literally thousands of results. Type in specific phrases and the results not only drastically decrease, but they become much more relevant.

For instance, a search on Google for "renovation" can bring back over 32 million listings. However, a listing for "bathroom renovation" can return less than 200,000. A search for "software" can return more than a billion results. A search for "custom accounting software" gets barely twenty-five thousand.

Many times people know what it is they're looking for and can get fairly specific with their searches. However, if your local small business site isn't geared to take advantage of that, it will either be lost in millions of listings or excluded from your customer's more specific searches altogether.

    2. Include Location References

Because you're aiming to reach your local audience, including location references when choosing your small business keywords can also work well. This can mean including your specific city, metro area, well-known landmarks or even surrounding cities that you commonly provide services to.

By doing this, you accomplish two very different tasks. For one, you make your site known to the people who matter most to you. You can be found by your customers looking for you in their own location. But there's an additional advantage to this.

When you include locations in your keywords, you eliminate a lot of unnecessary communication. With the abundance of people searching for products you may be offering, there's no limit to how many customers you can't help that may contact you for information. By including location, they know who you're working for and can move on to companies that are less focused.

    3. Communicate with Your Customers

As with all business choices, communication is absolutely important. If you come up with keywords that make sense to your industry as a whole, but aren't words your common customers would use, you have failed.

Customers aren't always in tune with the proper terminology of your industry. You would do well to interact often with your customers and find out how they refer to the products and services you offer in your own personal business.

This can be done when they're in your store. It can also be done through surveys. Contacting your customers, explaining that you're simply trying to better serve them by learning how they view your products and getting them to respond in their own terminology can give you a strong advantage in keyword advertising – with the added bonus of letting your customers know you really value their input!

While other companies may be reaching out to them just as vehemently as you are, you can sprint ahead of the competition by making your local small business easier to find according to your customer's standards.

    4. Use Honesty

A huge mistake many companies make when choosing their small business keywords, is to draw people in dishonestly. Often, they'll find out keywords that are very popular and try to jump through hoops to tie those words to their own products. This is not good business!

Instead, offer what you have according to honest keywords. You don't just want to draw anyone and everyone that uses the Internet. You want to draw customers that really are looking for your services.

It is said by some that people who are dissatisfied with a company spread their feelings 10 times more than those who are content. If you begin to draw anyone and everyone you can pointlessly to your site, you will eventually have a large amount of people who have a simple distaste for you before they even know anything about your company.

    5. Continually Reevaluate

Finally, you must recognize that language is organic. It is continually changing for a multitude of reasons. Keywords, key focuses, key everything changes based on fads, slang, trends, needs, and so on. You must continually check on how your keywords are performing.

Once you've found a set of keywords that work well for you, it would be good practice to reevaluate them about once a month. Check to see the popularity of those words and phrases. See if they're no longer being used or if they're typically being applied to something irrelevant to your company.

Your local small business is absolutely important to you. In today's information age, your Web site can be equally important to your customers. If they cannot find it, you're inevitably going to miss out on business you otherwise would have had.

There are other tips for choosing keywords, but they're negligible compared to those mentioned here. If you want to be seen, you must remember to use phrases and location references. If you want to be seen by the most relevant customers, you'll need to communicate with them and be honest. And finally, you must always remember that language changes – as do preferences - and you have to be able to change with it.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Creating your own small business website can be a scary thing to do. It requires some planning to get it right and make Google sit up and take notice of your site at first glance. Small business website search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the keys, but all too often, astute business people leave the creation of their websites up to a family member or a friend who happens to know something about it. This is strange, for they wouldn't dream of letting the same people build their bricks and mortar store or office.

Of course, getting an expert who fully understands small business SEO to build your website is not likely to come cheap, but it may be the best solution if you are starting out from scratch. However, this article is aimed at those small businesses that already have a website, but are disappointed at how poorly it performs. If you're frustrated because your website appears on page 42 of the Google search results, and no one is visiting your website, here are 7 things you can do to quickly improve your results.

    1. Create an Effective Website Title Tag, Description Meta Tag,

    and Keywords Meta Tag

The most important part of any website page (in the eyes of the search engines) is the title tag. The title is enclosed between the opening title tag: and the closing title tag: . It is located in the head section of an HTML document, or web page. You should use your page's main keyword in your title. Try to use your main keyword near the beginning of your title, and perhaps again near the end. But always strive to make your title readable, and not obviously keyword stuffed.

Your description tag plays an important role in SEO for your local small business. This tag is used by most of the search engines in their listings, so you need to spend some time getting this right. The description tag looks like this: and it is also found in the head section of your web page.

Something brief such as, "Acme Incorporated, Makers of Blue Widgets," gets the message across, but you could do much better. Try to list benefits rather than features, and use your main keyword in your description as well. Keep your description reasonably brief, but not too short. Something like, "Acme, Inc., Makers of the Strongest, Most Powerful and Affordable Widgets on the Planet" is better.

Like a headline for an ad or sales flyer, your description may take time to develop. Start with a list of all of the benefits your product or service offers and then try to write 20 different descriptions for your site based on those benefits. Test your descriptions by reading them to your customers, employees or others familiar with your business. You'll find out which description resonates most strongly with your potential prospects - and that's good for the search engines and for your sales.

The keywords tag, again found in the head section of your web pages, looks like this: . The keywords you choose for your page are important, because they tell the search engines what should be found on the page. Google and all the other search engines present search results based on relevancy – how relevant your web pages are to the keywords and phrases your prospects are searching for.

Keep your keyword phrases to less than seven and don't repeat the same words. For example, if you have two keyword phrases, which are, "blue widgets" and "bright blue widgets," you should only include unique words after including the first "blue widgets" keyword.

Curious to know what your Title, Description, Meta and Keyword tags currently look like? Here's a simple tip – just go to any page of your website, then click on "View Source" or "View Page Source" from the "View" menu. There you'll be able to see exactly what your tags are telling Google when they crawl your site.

    2. Optimize Your Website Copy

Your website copy consists of the words on every page of your site. Try to make it interesting and informative. One simple way to arrange your articles, or informative pages, is to use a simple three-step format. Begin with an introductory paragraph that tells your visitor what you are going to tell them. Then in the next two or three paragraphs, tell them. Finally, wind up the article by telling them what you just told them.

This may seem overly simple, but it works. Speak to your website audience as you would to a seven-year-old child. Don't patronize them, but lay it out clearly in simple steps using straightforward language that anyone can understand.

When writing your copy for each of your pages, make sure to focus on one or two keywords per page. If you are selling widgets in all colors and you also sell thingamajigs, then widgets should be on one page and thingamajigs on another. Keep it simple for your customers and the search engines by focusing on one idea per page and your customers will thank you for it, and Google will thank you too.

    3. Establish an Acceptable Keyword Density for Your Website Copy

While optimizing your website copy you also need to establish a keyword density that is acceptable to the search engines. Opinions differ, but somewhere between 2% and 5% is probably about right. This means that for effective small business SEO, your main keyword phrase should appear around three times for every 100 words.

Where your keyword appears is important too. Try to use your main keyword or phrase twice in the first paragraph, once in the second paragraph, once around the middle of the article, and once again near the end of the article. Try to start and end the first paragraph with your main keyword if possible, but don't force it. Always aim for copy that is readable before copy that has perfect keyword density.

    4. Create Quality Back Links to Your Website

Increasingly, the search engines are giving added weight to the number of quality back links your website has. It used to be that reciprocal linking was quite acceptable, and it still is, but now Google and the other search engines give higher credibility to one-way back links as far as your search engine rankings are concerned.

And it's not just any back links either. You need to have quality back links, or back links from sites that are similar to yours. It's not much good getting a back link from a site about butterflies if your site focuses on racing cars. With Google, it's all about relevance. You should also strive to get back links from so-called authority sites. These are sites that the search engines deem to be an authority on their chosen subject. They tend to be quite big and to have been around for some time.

    5. Use Local Directories Effectively

If you are marketing to a local market, then make use of local directories. How do you find them? If, for example, you are located in New York, then go to Google and search for, "directory" + "new york." This will return a list of all the local directories in that city. You could even try searching for, "blue widgets directory" + "new york," if you are marketing blue widgets.

Once you find a suitable directory, submit your website to it. People do search on local directories, so even if your product has worldwide appeal, there's a greater chance that you will get the sale if someone finds you in a local directory over someone else located in another continent who can deliver just as cost effectively or as quickly.

    6. Create a Proper Site Map and Google Site Map

Every website should have a site map. This is merely a directory of all your site's pages with links to every one. You should have a link from every page of your site back to your site map, and your site map must be updated whenever a new page is added.

A Google Site Map is also a site map, but one that is in a special format that Google can easily spider. It has the great advantage of allowing Google to instantly "see" your site and evaluate it. It can be a very useful tool in getting Google to index your site more quickly than otherwise. For more information on creating a Google Site Map, go to: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/.

    7. Add Fresh Original Content to Your Website at an Acceptably Measured Pace

Your website should never be considered finished. It should always be a work in progress that is constantly expanding with fresh and original content. The easiest way to do this is to add new articles on specific subjects on a regular basis. One article a week is the least you should aim for, but don't add content too quickly either. Dumping 100 articles a day into your site will ultimately work against you, because the search engines look for organic growth – in other words, growth that seems natural. Since it's not likely that you were able to write 100 articles in one day, Google and the other search engines will see this as unnatural and will count it against you in your page ranking.

SEO for your local small business is easier than you might think. Getting Google to fall head over heels in love with your small business website is not rocket science. You only need to implement a few simple things on a regular basis, and over time Google will notice and your page rank – and your placement with the search engines – will start climbing.

Have you ever been invited to a business networking meeting or luncheon, or thought about going to your chamber of commerce's networking events, but decided not to because you never know what to say to get the conversation started?

I've been there – and here's the simple trick I learned to help me feel comfortable with the cocktail party small talk. Most people who know me wouldn't think of me as "shy" – and I'm not – most of the time. When it comes to "networking" though, I used to struggle with making small talk.

That is, until I learned the FORM trick.

FORM works great because it works as a memory tool for when you are in social situations and you want to get to know the person you are talking with, and you want that person to remember you – and your business. Instead of talking about the weather, use FORM to make your conversation count.

FORM stands for Family, Occupation, Recreation and Message – four areas you can use as conversation helpers in just about any social situation.

Family – asking whether they live around the area, if they are originally from the area or have moved there recently, if they have a family – all of these are great conversation starters. This gets the person talking about themselves and gives you a chance to learn about them.

Occupation – what do you do for a living? When they tell you what they do, you have a great opportunity to ask them about their job – if it's in an industry you are familiar with you can comment about how competitive it is, or how challenging. If you are unfamiliar with their industry, here's your chance to learn about it.

When they ask what you do, have your '30 second elevator speech" ready. This is a description of your business that you can say in just a couple of sentences that articulates what it is that you do.

For instance, for my business I would say that "I help small to medium sized business owners market their brick-and-mortar businesses on the Internet, finding new local customers, increasing their sales and growing their businesses."

Recreation – this one's easy! What do you do for fun? If they participate in a sport or hobby that you enjoy as well, you can swap stories and really build a memorable relationship with the person.

For instance, if I meet someone and they tell me that they love to travel – then I can talk to them for hours, learning about the places they've visited. I can also share with them my passion for photography and how my camera has gotten me into some interesting adventures while we've been on the road.

Message – when you feel the conversation winding down, or you want to move on to meet other people in the group, have your "message" that you want this person to remember about you ready to go. It's something like your elevator speech, but much more personal to the individual you are talking to.

For me, my message is simple. "It was great to meet you, Bob. If you ever need help marketing your business online – or you run into someone who does – you know who to call."

If your business is selling plumbing supplies, just change it up a bit: "It was great to meet you, Bob. If you ever need a new faucet, I'm your guy!"

Of course, it's implied that when they give you their card, you will refer business to them as well – and you definitely should. Rising tides raise all ships, and the more referrals you can send to others, the more they are likely to send to you as well.

You can skip some of the first 3 steps, or cover them in a different order – but your message is key. First and foremost, you want to build a relationship with the person you are talking with, and you start to do that with the first 3 questions. Your message that you give them as you get ready to leave helps them remember who you are and what you do – which is an incredibly powerful way to use networking to grow your referrals and your customer base.

Give FORM a try the next time you are stuck for a conversation starter, and watch your network – and your customer base – grow as a result.

"How do I gain an advantage in my market when it seems like all of my competitors can outspend me by at least double or more?"

This is one of the main questions I hear from our customers and it's something that businesses everywhere struggle with - not just small businesses, but any company that is not the leader in their category. (Think Pepsi or Burger King - both have large marketing and advertising budgets, but they are not the category leader, and they are routinely outspent by their larger rivals).

In order to compete effectively, your marketing needs to be DIFFERENT and BETTER than your competition. By "better" I don't mean that you need to spend a fortune on your advertising. You do need to reach your audience BETTER than your competition, and you can do that - even on a relatively small marketing budget.

Start by THINKING DIFFERENTLY - what ways can you market to your target customers or gain publicity that are DIFFERENT than other companies in your industry?

A locally-owned ice cream shop in Bloomington created a stir when they opened their location by sending a press release to just about every celebrity they could think of, announcing the opening of their new business. "Scoops" was overwhelmed by the responses they got from close to 400 "personalities" with autographed pictures inscribed with "good luck on your new venture" messages. The walls in their shop are adorned with these framed celebrity photos providing a great "buzz-factor" for a new, privately owned business.

A small lingerie company in New York didn't have the budget to compete with their big-spending rival, Victoria's Secret. They realized they needed to THINK DIFFERENTLY so they came up with a crafty marketing campaign. They couldn't afford New York's high media prices, so they stenciled their message (with environmentally-safe, washable paints) on sidewalks outside the convention center and other high-traffic areas:

"From here, it looks like you could use some new underwear."

Risky? Yes. Edgy? You bet. Did it work? Absolutely! Not only did consumers see it, but the press noticed it and hundreds of articles were written all over the world about Bamboo Lingerie. You just can't buy publicity like that!

It's not enough to just "be different" though - you need to reach your customers BETTER than your competition too.

A small bank was looking for ways to attract new customers. They realized the impact that the fear of identity theft was having, with lots of stories in the media, bills before congress, newspaper articles and television commercials all talking about "identity theft."

They capitalized on this ongoing discussion by hosting a "shredding event" at their local branch banks. Customers were invited to bring in all of their old bank, credit card and utility statements and have them shredded while they watched, protecting their identity while learning about the bank and its services.

They partnered with a local office supply company to bring in shredding machines, and a local restaurant to cater the event. They issued press releases to the newspapers and handed out flyers to their existing customers. Once word got out about the event, the local newspaper ran a story about the event and the local news station did a spot on it as well.

For the cost of a few hundred flyers and a press release, the bank earned tremendous goodwill with the community, got great coverage in the newspaper and television and increased their new customer sign-ups that month by over 50%!

Start thinking today of ways that YOU can market DIFFERENTLY and BETTER than your competition, and run with the big dogs...even without a huge marketing budget!
