Make no mistake, in business everyone has their own tax responsibilities they must be aware of. It certainly pays to always get your own tax advice and input from professional sources. Good accountants cost money but they can also save you greater amounts through good tax advice.
But with that said, when it comes to running your own business we are all responsible for making sure we meet our tax demands. If our business earns enough to put us into a position where we need to pay tax, we need to ensure we have the money set aside to do so.
This is where some small business owners come unstuck. For example your business may earn enough in a year to warrant getting a £500 tax bill at the end of the business year. Now if you don't work this out as you go along and put that money aside, you will probably still be able to find it, as it is a relatively small amount of money for many small business owners.
But supposing your business does really well and ends up with a tax bill of £25,000? To get a tax bill for this amount you really have to be earning a decent amount of money. You now have to find a large chunk of cash in one hit when it is time to pay the tax. Would you be able to find that cash?
The easiest way to do it is to get into good habits right from the very start. It isn't necessary to know exactly how much tax you will have to pay if you set a plan in motion from the beginning. A good way to go is to put aside roughly 10% of every single payment you receive as income. Set up a separate business savings accounts to put this into if you can; it is far easier to keep the money set aside rather than merely thinking of it in that way but keeping it with the rest of your cash flow.
Ten per cent might not be enough to cover all your outgoings in terms of both tax but it will certainly cover a good percentage of it. The good news is that when your tax bill comes in you will have a large percentage put away. If you still have some funds remaining in your savings account after paying the tax bill, you can either save the remainder for the next tax payment, or take the extra money out and reinvest it in the business, or pay yourself a bonus and buy a special treat. For example you might use it to treat yourself to a holiday.
The point is that by allocating a set percentage like this to tax, you should be able to cover everything without fear of coming up short. So even if you have a bumper business year and you end up with a large tax bill, you will have some in reserve to meet it. And that is far better than panicking and wondering where the money will come from.

If you are like most people, working from home, you have probably figured out how many hours are between the times when you start and finish work for yourself. So for example if you start at 9am and finish at 5pm that's eight hours, right? Wrong!
Firstly you have to knock off half an hour or an hour for lunch. That's fair enough, so we are down to, say, seven and a half hours each day. But what about all those little coffee breaks you take, maybe ten minutes here and ten minutes there? It is also far too easy to get distracted by the television when working from home too. All those minutes really add up and that means you probably have less than seven hours of true working time per day instead.
But we're still not done. There is a big difference between the hours you spend doing some actual work – work you are going to receive a payment for – and work you are doing simply as part of your business. For example let's say you have to create a website for someone. The time you spend building the website is time you will be paid for. But when it comes to invoicing them for that website, you won't be paid for that. And if you happen to have quite involved invoices that need to list several payable things on them, it can take a few minutes to create each one.
You can probably see where we are going with this. If you keep a close eye on the amount of time you spend working each day, you will see that the actual working time is a lot less than you might think. For example out of those seven hours you may only actually spend five of them doing work that you will be paid for.
Why is this important though? The answer is that you need to be sure you know what you are capable of earning with the time you have available. For example you might earn typically around £20 an hour doing whatever you do. It would be easy to think that you work five days a week from 9am until 5pm, excluding a generous hour for lunch. This translates into a 35 hour working week, which multiplied by £20 an hour means you will be earning £700 a week. Not bad for someone one working from home without any employees?
But we have just seen that two hours a day on other tasks is not unusual. You will need to work out realistically how long you personally spend working and how long you spend doing other work related tasks. Working on five hour days, this gives us a 25 hour working week and an income at £20 an hour of £500 a week. That is very different from £700, isn't it?
So you have two choices. You either need to put your rates up so you can cover those periods of time when you won't be paid for what you are doing, or you need to settle for that lower rate. You can also try and reduce the amount of non-billable time you have built into your week, but this can be hard to do. So make sure you consider all your options carefully before choosing the right path for you.

There was a feature on the BBC website some months back which showed a series of photographs of authors at their desks. These were the desks at which bestselling novels and works of non-fiction had been written – and they could not have been more diverse.
Perhaps the most telling thing about them was that some were incredibly, deeply messy while others were so tidy they could only have been polished a few seconds before the photograph was taken. Of course we have no way of knowing whether those incredibly tidy desks always look like that, but assuming they do, it begs a question of what a working desk should look like.
In answer to that, there is no right or wrong way for a desk to look. Some people will say that a messy desk equals a messy mind, or words to that effect. Some claim they cannot work unless their desk is tidy. But for other people the opposite is true. As soon as they are hounded into tidying their work space for the benefit of others, they cannot find a thing and their whole way of working is thrown into disarray.
There are plenty of websites that declare that messy desks are definitely counterproductive. But while this is essentially true for a lot of people, some people can work quite happily amidst a pile of paper that threatens to topple to the floor. It all depends on the individual.
So how does your desk shape up? Do you constantly tidy it or are you happy with it looking untidy? The answer really does not matter, provided you are able to work happily in that position.
You may find that how you work depends on the amount of space you have available. Some people find that if they work at a small desk they will be more likely to be untidy. But if they have space to neatly file everything away and put everything in its place, it is a very different story indeed.
In other situations there are people who will constantly generate paper and many other items to fill the amount of space they find themselves with. No matter how much they may strive to keep things tidy, it never quite works for them.
Take a fresh look at your desk today and ask yourself how happy you are with it. Don't think about what others in your workplace may think. Remember that this is your working space and it needs to be right for you. If this means it is messy then so be it. You need to make it clear that your desk is the one space you are totally responsible for at all times. If that means anything landing on it has the chance of disappearing into the ether forever then that is the way it is.
On the other hand, if you look at it and feel guilty and overwhelmed, perhaps now is the time to start tidying, don't you think?

You only have to think about what mums have to cope with each day to know that working from home can not only be a viable option but also preferable from a regular job that means having somebody else take care of the children.
Many mums are faced with the dilemma of not wanting to leave their baby with someone else, while still needing to bring in an income of some kind. This is why working from home seems like such a great idea, because it allows them to stay at home with baby, toddler and older children and still bring some money in.
The thing to remember here is that even when the children are off at school, this only leaves a few precious hours during the day for mums to work. There are few jobs that enable mums to get to work after having dropped them at school, and then work for a few hours before having to go and pick them up again. And even when these jobs do exist, they understandably have a lot of competition.
There are plenty of ways in which mums can make money working from home. It could be delivering catalogues around the neighbourhood; it could be writing articles for websites and magazines; and it might even involve creating a website of their own to make money from, in more than one way. These barely touches the surface too, meaning that most people will find something they enjoy doing that has the potential to earn them money.
But let's get back to being practical for a moment. We need to think about how to work when we have little ones under our feet all the time. Any viable home working job / business has to enable us to do the work when we have the time. Even if you were to get a job working from home that enabled you to work between the hours of 10am and 12 noon, could you guarantee that the kids wouldn't need your attention during that time?
Of course you couldn't. And this is why a lot of people are happy to do their own business, because it puts them in total control of their working lives. An internet franchise is a good example. It enables you to work from home, be your own boss and set your own schedule. A CV Writing business is another good example; you can write CVs when baby is asleep at night and also once they have gone to bed in the evening. You can fit it around your own needs and availability, which is a lot more than can be said for some other business ideas.
In the end you need to put your children's needs above your own. Don't be tempted to jump at business opportunities that are too good to be true, instead spend some time researching various ideas and think about whether they could work for you.
Strictly speaking the more control you have over your own business, the more likely it is that you will be a success when you start working from home. It might take time to develop the business, but it will be time well spent.

Franchise businesses aren't for everyone. Some people love them and have made a real success out of buying into one. Other people would rather make their own way in their own business; there is nothing wrong with either model when it comes to starting a business.
But there is no denying that franchises do have some distinct advantages over other businesses that are started from scratch. As such, they do suit some people over others, so let's see what advantages you can look forward to if you decide to try your hand at investing in a franchise business.
Firstly there is the question of branding. Creating and developing a strong brand, including brochures, leaflets, marketing material etc. – is no small task. In fact trying to do this on your own with a self made business can be very expensive and time consuming if you want to go up against the bigger companies that form your competition.
With a franchise you have less to worry about because you are purchasing a brand that has already spent a fortune on branding. If they had not, you wouldn't be investing in them in the first place, would you?
You may also find you have an exclusive territory as part of your franchise agreement. For example let's suppose you buy into a franchise which allows you to set up a coffee shop. The company selling you the franchise will probably make sure that no other franchisee within their company will set up within a certain radius of your coffee shop. Of course this doesn't stop the competition doing the same thing, but at least you are not competing directly with another branch of the same company.
You should also be able to benefit from the fact that you are not starting a business from scratch. This means a lot of tasks you would normally have to think about and do as a newbie business owner will already have been taken care of on your behalf. If you bought a franchise from MacDonald's for example, you know already that all the products are there, the costings have been worked out carefully and you can make a profit. You know roughly how the business works and what goes on simply from visiting a branch yourself.
When you create something from scratch you don't have any of this. If you were to open your own burger bar you would be in competition with MacDonald's. And since the company is already well established you would have an uphill climb to try and ensure you get the level of success you want.
You can see then that buying into a franchise comes with many benefits. The real task is in finding the right business model for you. If you don't pick the right opportunity for you, you could end up making an expensive mistake. There are definitely plenty of advantages to becoming a franchisee, but you need to ensure they are profitable and will work in your area. Choose one that also complements your skills and talents.

Running a successful home business can seem like the most exciting thing in the world. All the time you are sitting, tied to an employer's desk, you dream of escaping your boss's clutches and working from home so that you can be free from the day to day demands of modern employment.
But when you finally make the leap and start a home business it can be a different story. Even though it is good to work from home and be in full control of your destiny, you can sometimes find that motivation can be lacking on certain days. You might still get that Monday morning blues feeling on occasion – it can be a hard thing to shake off, especially when you have no one to answer to! When you work for yourself you need to have strategies in place to get rid of lethargy, otherwise you won't get anything done quickly.
Distractions can drain your reserves of motivation in lots of ways. We all have different distractions that are capable of dragging us away from our work. Some people cannot walk by a pile of ironing without doing it. Others might not even see it – but they could be deterred by a beautiful sunny day that drags them out into the garden or park instead of managing their business.
The point is that you should be aware of what distracts you and take steps to ensure that you have strategies to deal with all distractions. Emails can be enormously distracting, so check them first thing in the morning and at the end of the working day. This will save you a lot of time and help your concentration levels as well. Try this from today and at least for a week to see how it works. Put a note at the bottom of every email you send out, stating that when you check mails.
You may also have to speak to everyone who knows you including family and friends, when you first start working from home. There is a tendency for people to think you don't work anymore, or you can simply stop whenever you like. Setting boundaries and setting specific hours during which you cannot be disturbed is the best way forward. Be prepared to have to fight to defend those hours – don't let people encroach on them. Simply say you are working and you will call back or get back in touch once your work day has finished. This should do the trick and prevent them from doing it again.
You also need to enjoy working in your home business. Hopefully you will be doing something that appeals to you and makes the most of your abilities and skills. If you are then motivation shouldn't be too much of a problem. If you are not then perhaps it is time to change how you make money.
If you have a bad day, start slowly and tackle a few easy jobs to start with. This will normally be enough to get the flow going and you can then enjoy a productive day as a result.
Motivation is arguably even more important for home business owners than it is for people in employment as there is nobody keeping an eye on them and telling them off if they start to slack. Make sure you have ways of firing yourself up during your working hours so that you get the most out of the hours worked.

Everyone has heard of the Wii. This games console has become a household name, not to mention an integral part of many households.
But it should also be mentioned as a great boon to people who work from home, because it is one of the best ways to get regular exercise even if you don't go out during the day.
With aerobic exercises, balance exercises, fun games, yoga and muscle strengthening tests, you get an all round workout that really tests your skills and abilities. When you run a business from home it is very easy to lead a sedentary life that rarely includes any exercise. Wii Fit Plus gives you the chance to change all this, but it has more benefits than simply giving you a workout.
Any job can be stressful but working for yourself can throw some other issues into the mix as well. You are in control of every aspect of your business, and that can be stressful at times. Spending some time each day on the Wii can help you to combat this effectively. You will learn skills and improve your posture and centre of balance as well, and these can help you maintain a much better posture while sitting at your computer.
Another bonus as far as keeping stress at bay is the yoga that is included as part of the disc. There are various yoga positions you can try with your chosen trainer and he / she will tell you just how well you are doing. It even teaches you how to breathe properly. This might sound a bit daft but once you get the hang of it and you try it together with the yoga exercises and positions you will really notice the difference.
Coming away from your desk to indulge in a games console for half an hour to an hour each day sounds like work avoidance. But in fact it has many benefits when you try out the Wii Fit Plus game. If you want to lose weight and tone up it can certainly help you do that, and it is one of the best and most enjoyable ways to fit some much needed exercise into every working day.
If you get that mid afternoon slump not long after lunch, try jumping on the Wii just before you know that slump will hit. Not only will you avoid it, you will also get the chance to burn some calories and avoid the mid afternoon snacking that can be the bane of many a home workers life as well.
Of course you can have a go at the Wii Fit Plus game whenever you like. But there is a lot to be said for fitting in a session during your working day. If you can do this you can really get the benefits from it and you will notice that you are sitting more comfortably, breathing better and maintaining a better posture as well.
In the end we have a lot to thank the Wii for.

Home business owners often face quiet spells and wonder where their next bit of business is going to come from. Be happy when you are not so busy. It will give you time to catch up on other work.
Every home business owner has busy times and quiet times. It can be quite disturbing when business is slow as you start to wonder whether it will pick up again. If you continue persevering though, the pace will undoubtedly get busy again.
So here is the thing. Say you normally work from 8am until around 4pm or 5pm (for example) but on this particular occasion you are finished all your tasks by 2pm, you grab some lunch and then sit back and relax or...
Free time can be wonderful to the home business owner. If you were working for someone else you would have to fill the time somehow or just sit and clock watch until the end of the day finally arrived. But as your own boss you get to decide what to do next. Do you find things to do or do you take the afternoon off?
Quite often the best way to make this decision is to think about the week ahead. Do you have busy days planned for the following day and beyond? If you do you might benefit from getting ahead on the next day's work. Alternatively you may have been extremely busy recently. If this is the case you might be grateful for a bonus afternoon off to recharge your batteries.
If you decide to opt for the latter you should close your office door, go elsewhere and relax totally. Take the opportunity to go for a walk or do something that is purely for you. It can be tempting to get stuck into household chores or some DIY but why not treat yourself to an experience you don't often have time for? Running a business from home can be tiring and demanding, and when you have a free afternoon, you can really take advantage of it.
Another possibility is to blitz your office and give it a good tidy up and a spring clean. The office is usually the place where proper cleaning is put off, simply because of the amount of equipment and paperwork that is often lying around. If you tackle it on an afternoon off you can make good headway and keep things nice and tidy for yourself. It certainly makes for a much better working environment.
The thing to remember is to make a decision about how to spend this bit of free time as quickly as possible. It is very easy to spend half the afternoon trying to think about what would be best to do. Go with your first instinct if you can. Does it feel right to shut the door on your office and go and relax in the garden? Do it. Are you itching to get the vacuum cleaner in and do some cleaning? Go for it. Does the paperwork need sorting? Just do it.
Provided you make the most of this bit of additional time you can only benefit from it. Whether it is getting some regular exercise or doing something else, it is one of the bonuses of working for yourself in a home business.

Some home business owners love nothing better than to set their alarm for 6am and get up to start work nice and early. This gives them a good jump over their competitors on the day and stands them in good stead when it comes to finishing at a reasonable time later on in the evening.
Other home business owners don't set the alarm. They get up when they wake up: wanting to take full advantage of the fact they work for themselves. But this sometimes means they will finish later in the day than their early rising counterparts.
So who is right? Which method is best if you are going to start working from home and you are wondering which hours to work?
The first thing you have to understand is that the right answer for you may not be the right answer for someone else. The point is that when you are an employee you have to stick by someone else's schedule. If that means working from 9am to 5pm, then that is what you must do.
When you work for yourself you can pay closer attention to your own body clock. If your clock demands you should be up early, get up at 6am if it suits you. If you find you cannot function at that hour you may as well sleep in until you feel more human. There are plenty of home business owners who only start work when it gets to around 1pm in the afternoon. They then work right through until midnight or later before turning in. If that works for you, it is the best way to make progress.
An early start can still be useful in many cases though, particularly if you have a lot of clients to catch up with or you have a deadline to meet that day. The sooner you start the more time you are giving yourself to finish the work. If no one interrupts you or calls for a consultation of any kind, you may well have plenty of time to finish. But supposing something happens that requires your immediate attention?
If this should occur you will end up worrying about meeting the deadline and running short on time. This can compromise your work standards and it will also make you feel more stressed. Isn't the whole point of working for yourself to make sure you have more quality time and less stress?
As you can see it is vital to consider your start time each day. If you are wondering when the best starting time would be for you, forget your alarm and start when you wake up.
If you find that too easy, set your alarm for an hour earlier the next day. Keep going back until you find the ideal time to start the day for you. It could be more difficult in the winter months when it is darker, but there is also something special about being the early bird!
Try it for yourself and see.

If you have a home business and you work from home you may not have a dedicated office space you can call your own. Even if you do it may not meet up to your ideal requirements. Unless you are lucky enough to have a separate room for your office and enough cash to fit it out just as you want it, you are likely to have to make do to a certain extent.
Take this opportunity to have a look round at the space where you work. Does it satisfy you? Are there things about it that just don't seem to really work that well? Are you constantly tripping over things cluttered on the floor? Do you struggle to make the most of the space you have?
Wherever you happen to work, the best way to get the most out your home office space is to take some time to arrange it properly. You could do this over a weekend if you have the time. Alternatively block out an afternoon of your work time a couple of weeks from now and don't book anything else into that time beforehand. Make a list of the things you want to do and keep that list handy so you can jot things on it over time.
One of the most important things in any home office space is the desk. This is where the majority of your business will be done of course, so it needs to feel right for you and fulfil your needs. If it is messy it will not be the most pleasant space to work in.
When you start your office overhaul, clear off your desk and give it a good clean. You might want to buy some filing trays to have on one side in order to keep your business paperwork organised. This makes things easier to find and keeps the clutter down.
Sometimes just giving your office space a good spring clean is enough to make you feel motivated about it again. But if you still feel unhappy about some aspect of it you can often find out where the problem lies by clearing items and rearranging things carefully.
Keeping whatever area you have tidied is the key to feeling better about your workspace. Buy storage cabinets or filing cabinets if you need them. They will look good and keep paperwork off the floor; you won't have the problem of tripping over files constantly either. Health and safety applies just as much in your own home office as it does everywhere else. A lot of it is common sense though so make sure you take a look round and identify any potential areas where problems could occur. Make sure there are no wires or leads from computers or printers you could trip over for example.
The point is that there are always things you can do to make your office space more pleasant. Add some plants and keep it clean all the time too. You will find it makes the world of difference to how organised your home business feels.

Just as there are great benefits to working from home in a home business, there are some problems, which inevitably crop up as well. The best example of this is figuring out how your work load is positioned. You will get better at gauging your work load as you become more experience of working at home, but the better you are at it initially the easier you will find it to work on a daily basis.
No matter how hard you try or what solutions you put in place, you will inevitably find that some days are short on work. It doesn't matter too much if this only happens in the beginning or just now and then, but if it happens regularly then you will have to start finding some fresh customers and hunt for more business.
Similarly, there can be problems at the other end of the scale. If your business is too successful you can end up with far more work than you have time for. Always keep a schedule or a diary close by so you can block out some time for every task that needs done. Don't allocate time for potential business though, if you do this and the business fails to materialise, you could turn down other more profitable work for something that ends up not happening.
Being able to schedule your work efficiently is a skill you need to have if your home based business is going to work in your favour. However, it will get better over time, so don't worry too much if you aren't very good at it to begin with. Provided you recognise your shortcomings in this area you can read up on various techniques that can be used to help you get better at it.
It is also a good idea to review your schedule and workload on a regular basis to see how much business you are receiving from different sources. As you deal with regular clients and find new customers, it will become easier to start planning ahead more efficiently. Home working often results in having some freedom to rearrange your schedule if necessary and this can certainly come in handy when the situation dictates. For example, if a rush job comes in it is good to know you can push back other items of work that are not so urgent.
If you do have a day where you have too little work to fill up your working hours, use the time you have in other more productive ways. For example, make contact with new potential customers and also review your working methods to see if there is anything else you can do to enhance your business from existing clients. Can you find other sources of work that may be more profitable than what you are doing at the moment?
In this sense time spent not working does not have to be wasted time. In fact it can be an investment in the future of your business, so bear this in mind and make the most of it. You will be glad you did when your home business benefits from the time you have invested.

Starting to work from home is a major event for most business people who actually try it. But you may find that you eventually reach a stage in the growth of your home business that feels like a solid brick wall. You have achieved a lot but you can't quite seem to progress any further no matter how hard you work. How do you go beyond this point and take your home business to the next level, so you too can enjoy the trappings of success?
There are several ways you can do this, and a lot depends on the kind of business you have got. For example if you work from home as a writer, you can start writing for yourself as well as for other people. This might sound strange to begin with – after all, you cannot pay yourself can you? But in reality it is more than possible by setting up streams of income that are somewhat automated.
Instead of constantly writing articles for clients you could write a set of articles to populate a blog or website that you own. All you have to do then is add some adverts and start bringing some traffic to the site. Over time you should be able to start earning some money from this method, and if you multiply the number of sites you have, you can see that it is possible to earn more over time.
As you can see, there are ways in which you can improve the future of your home business by looking at alternative sources to bring in more money. You may be able to develop other income streams for the business you are involved with as well. But the most important thing here is to remember that there are only so many hours in the day. If you have reached something of an impasse with the stage you are at, you need to think about how to progress beyond this point without having a mental breakdown! We have seen that streams of income which do not require your constant attention can be achievable, but this isn't the only option you have available.
It could be that the only way you can develop is to actually stop working from home and move into an office space which allows you to employ a helper as well. Many businesses have made this leap in the past and it can be the next step towards building a better business. Although your overheads will surely rise, the capacity of your business to deliver more will double!
Alternatively you could look into using virtual services that allow you to continue working from home and deal with m ore clients. For instance if you find that trying to keep up with answering the phone and dealing with minor issues is keeping you from actually working, why not hire a virtual helper to do these things for you?
Virtual assistants are a very popular way for home workers to avoid moving into an office space or go through the task of hiring someone on a permanent basis. Because they are freelance themselves, they could provide you with the solution you need to successfully develop your business.

Most people have probably entertained the idea of starting a home business at some point, but while we hear much about the pros and cons of working from home and how many different ways you can make money in your house, we don't often hear much about the full-time or part-time alternatives.
When you look for a traditional job as an employee, you know specifically how many hours you will be required to work at any point. For example, the job description might say 39 hours or 16 hours or whatever else is required, but when it comes to running a business from home it is down to you to decide how many hours will be suitable.
So you need to think carefully about your life and your requirements in order to make the right decision for you. Some people find the best way to get started in a home business is to start part time around their current employed position. For example you might try working for two hours each evening once you get in from work. Add in a few hours at the weekend as well and you can quite easily do a part-time, 16 hours a week business.
Other people work many more hours when they initially start. For example, they might work full-time, but that could be very different from doing a 9 to 5 job every weekday. It could mean a 7am start and they may not finish until late into the evening on some days. This is not ideal, but a home business does not always fit into a specific schedule. You might find you have to focus on doing a few 5 hour days and then throw in a 10 hour day to get a rush order fulfilled later at the weekend.
This makes it slightly tricky to figure out whether a part-time or full-time home business will suit you best. You will need to work out how much you can get done in a specific length of time and find the appropriate number of clients you need to cover your costs and make a profit.
The starting point should be to consider your current commitments in terms of current employment and in terms of your family life. If you have children at school that need dropping off and picking up, you will need to fit in your work schedule around this. The same applies to any other commitments you have, which cannot be moved or adjusted in any way.
The secret here is to remember that you are not restricted to 16 hours or 10 hours or however many hours others work. You get to decide how many hours you want to put in and you also get to work out whether a part-time or full-time business will be best for you. It might just take a while to figure out the best course of action for you, overall.
However, once you have figured out how much time you can dedicate and then chosen a business idea that you can seriously put your heart and soul into, there is nothing as satisfying as running a successful home business!

Some people could never imagine there being a downside to running a business from home, but there can indeed be negatives to working in this environment. One of the main ones is the lack of exercise that can result if you aren't too careful.
Since lots of home workers have jobs, which involve sitting at a computer all day, you can see where the problems start. Your journey to work could be as little as getting up, getting dressed, walking into your home office and sitting down again. We are talking about mere seconds rather than half an hour walking to and from the train station or bus stop.
The good news is that it doesn't have to be hard to build some valuable exercise into your day. For example, if you get up at 8am and start work soon afterwards, try getting up at 7.30am and going for a refreshing half hour walk first, instead. You will feel the benefit as it is a great way to wake up in the morning and get ready for business.
Alternatively, you could take an hour-long break from business during the day and head out for a bike ride or a swim when it is less crowded. You can always make up the hour later! There are lots of ways you can build exercise into a day that you control. You wouldn't be able to do that if you were working as an employee.
Another good way to get some exercise is to go outside and do some gardening for half an hour or so. You could even treat yourself to a Nintendo Wii and get half an hour of tennis or baseball in, whatever the weather might be doing outside.
The important thing is to try and get up and get moving as much as you can. It is very easy to sit in your chair and not move for hours, only getting up to pop to the loo or make a snack or a drink. But this isn't good for you and you will feel sluggish very quickly if you stick to this way of working. You certainly will not do your home business any favours if you make yourself ill in the longer term either.
There are also many kinds of simple exercises you can do while you are sitting in your chair. You could keep a couple of filled water bottles on your desk and do some arm raises with those every hour or so. You could also slide your chair back and raise your legs up and down, holding them out and rigid for a count of five or ten to help strengthen the muscles. Why not try buttock squeezes, you can do these all day and your muscles will really benefit from it?
To achieve the ideal work life balance, make sure you do some simple exercises while you are working at your desk, as well as actually getting up and out to take advantage of going for a walk or a jog every day. We only need thirty minutes of reasonable exercise each day to get the benefits and you will find you are much more alert, able to work better and hopefully this will aid you in gaining more business.

The Dacorum Narrow Boat Project (DNBP) was set up to provide the opportunity for young people in the Hemel Hempstead area and beyond to experience the pleasure of cruising on a canal boat. For many young people this is an opportunity that, due to the often prohibitive costs of hiring a canal boat, they could never normally enjoy.
Obviously there are significant costs associated with running and maintaining a canal boat so to keep costs to a minimum most of the maintenance work that is required to keep the boat afloat and looking pristine is carried out by local volunteers.
Because of the selfless work carried out by the local volunteers the DNBP is able to keep its charges very low and this brings its cruises into the affordable range of local schools and clubs that might wish to educate their children into the ways of the canal and the many lessons that can be learned from operating a canal boat.
A Brief History
The canal boat owned by the DNBP is known as The Belfast. She, boats are always female, was built in 1936 as a work boat for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Co. but after many years of hard labour she was allowed to fall into a serious state of disrepair. She was one of a number of ex-working boat hulls lying in a dilapidated state on the Wendover Arm, with no engine or rudder and offered for sale by the British Waterways Board.
In 1971 she was spotted by a member of the DNBP who saw past her dilapidated state to what she could become again with some tender loving care… and a lot of money spent on her. The Project began a serious campaign to raise the necessary funds, not only to buy her but to restore her to her former glories and kit her out for cruising on the Grand Union Canal. The purchase price of £500 was raised but this was obviously a drop in the ocean compared to what was needed to be spent to equip her for cruising.
The rusted hull of the boat was towed to a boat yard in the Midlands where a second-hand diesel engine was fitted and a new rudder installed. This allowed The Belfast to be sailed under her own steam to The Fishery, Boxmoor where the Project team began repairing, painting and making her fit for habitation and to accommodate people in a reasonable degree of comfort.
When The Belfast arrived at The Fishery she was little more than a leaky shell of a boat with an engine and a flimsy cabin which gave the boatman some protection from the elements. To refit the whole boat was a massive undertaking and required many months of work fitting insulation, cabins, bunks, the galley, toilets… in fact every single thing needed to accommodate people in a reasonable degree of comfort had to be installed.
Eventually though all the hard work paid off and by late 1972 the canal boat had begun pay her way and very quickly became popular with the local schools and clubs in the Hemel Hempstead area. She has remained extremely popular with the local youth up until the present day.
By the 1980's it had become apparent that a more permanent mooring site was required so that all the shoreside equipment could be stored and the routine maintenance carried out and in 1980 this mooring was granted by the Dacorum District Council on the site of a former refuse site at Nash Mills.
Since her initial refit the boat has needed constant ongoing maintenance and upgrading which, thanks to the Project's faithful band of volunteers, she has received. Thousands of young people have been treated to excellent holidays and weekends away thanks to the foresight of those who first set eyes on The Belfast's rotting hull but had the vision to see what it could become. And the work continues. A complete internal refit of the boat was completed in 1998, bringing the accommodation, galley, toilets and shower up to a really high standard and ensuring that thousands more youngsters would enjoy fun holidays and be educated on the ways of canal people.
If you want to get involved as a volunteer then there is always room for you, especially if you come with a specific skill in the realm of canal boats. If you just fancy booking The Belfast for your youth group then contact the Dacorum Narrow Boat Project for prices and conditions and you too could soon be enjoying a relaxing cruise along the Grand Union Canal through the beautiful Chiltern Hills.

Which home businesses make the most money? This is the $64,000 question, isn't it? But it is probably one of the ones that is asked most often, and that means you have to consider the answer sooner or later if you want to start an enterprise from home.
The truth is there is no easy answer to this question. For starters there are plenty of home businesses around that are viable and workable for many people. But that doesn't mean they will work for everyone. This is a common stumbling point when you want to make your own home business work. It is easy to look at what is working for someone else and try and launch into the same thing yourself. But is it right for you as well – or not?
Let's say for example that you start researching home businesses online and you come across someone who is making a decent income as a photographer. You might be tempted to jump on the bandwagon yourself, but unless you are also a talented photographer you may not make too much money doing it yourself.
The trick is to match your talents, ambitions and loves to the right kind of home business. This is the kind of business that will work for you – just as it may not work for someone else because we are all so different from each other. It is tempting and understandable to start exploring the various different types of successful home businesses by reading all those 'Top Ten Lists' you see so often online. But you should only ever take this as a guideline because what works for someone could fail miserably for someone else.
When you think about home businesses that might be worth trying then, you need to put two different types of information together to come up with the right solution for you. Firstly you need to find businesses that seem to work for other people. Secondly you need to find something that will work for you. Both of these aspects are very important but you cannot get away with having just one of them on their own.
This is essential to remember if you want to maximise your chances of success. It's good to know that certain businesses work well for other people because it could mean they will work well for you too. But you also need to be sure they appeal to you personally, otherwise you could end up being disappointed when they don't live up to your expectations.
Finally remember that the more time you spend researching home businesses initially, the more likely it is you will pick the right business first time. If you end up trying a few without success, do not let it damage your self confidence. Always make sure you do your best and focus on getting the results you want. Find a home business that will suit you and your unique skills and abilities. This is the secret of picking the right business for you – and it works virtually every time.

When someone mentions the idea of home businesses we tend to think about a single product or service. For example it might be making something, or creating something from scratch and then selling it. It could alternatively be selling a service of some kind. But we always tend to think along the lines of a single product or service. But is this the way that many home workers do business? Or do they have a few more tricks up their sleeves we could all learn from?
The truth is that there are plenty of ways you can have a simple home business with many different facets to it. For example let's suppose you have a blog that you want to make money with. Once you are driving traffic to your site you can make money by selling advertising space on the site. You could then use Google Adsense to easily monetise certain areas of the site in accordance with their rules. And how about promoting affiliate products so you can make some money every time a reader clicks on a link in your website and buys something?
This is just a very simple example. But it does show you how it is possible to make money in several different ways from your home business. It is often easier to make this work if your business is based online in some way. For example some people create lots of different websites on different subjects and make an income from each of them. These incomes may not be a lot individually, but when you add them all together they can add up to a lot of money – more than enough to bring in a regular and decent income.
So we can see that associated home businesses are a good thing – and something that can bring us money over the long term. They work offline too in many home run businesses. If you have a printing business that focuses on creating business cards and other associated business items such as compliment slips for example, how about diversifying by creating menus and notelets and other associated items as well?
No matter what basic business you are in, think outside the box and see if you can come up with a way to extend that business and branch out in some respect. Are there other streams of income you can bring in by branching off from your main business?
Look at what others are doing and learn from them. If you are stuck for ideas don't worry – sometimes the best ones come along when you are least expecting them and are definitely worth waiting for. Keep on thinking about each aspect of your business as it stands now and see whether you can find a way to expand and add on an associated business in some way. Don't expand too quickly though; try one thing at a time and see how it works.
Every way of expanding gives you the opportunity to bring in more income. And the more you can earn, from different areas, the more secure you will feel and the better your business – and you – will fare as a result.

Many people are interested in making money and earning an income from blogging. While it is true that some bloggers are working full time and making a very good living from blogging, this doesn't mean that everybody can do it. So could you make a living from your blog?
The secret to standing a chance of making it happen for you is to look to the long term. No matter how successful you end up being as a blogger there is no way you can expect to earn a six-figure sum from your blog in a matter of months. If you start looking into the backgrounds and experiences of the most successful internet bloggers, you will find they have been doing it for years. It was never easy for them in the beginning either, they have had to persevere and keep on pushing for success in order to achieve a large following.
To boil it down to its basics you need two things in order to make money from a blog. You need a huge volume of traffic visiting your blog on a daily basis and you also need to have various ways of monetising your blog. For example, Google Adsense is the most well known of these, but there are plenty of other ways you can do it. Selling display ads and writing paid reviews for people who want their product promoted and written about are just two examples; there are plenty more as well.
But it is not enough to assume that lots of traffic and some Google ad blocks combined are going to be enough to bring in a huge income. Much also depends on the topic you have chosen for your blog and where that traffic comes from. Not all traffic is the same and while some people can visit your blog and do little while they are there, others will stay and click on some of the ads they are interested in.
The real secret to making money with any blog is finding a topic that can be commercialised and perseverance. Those who give up their day job in order to become a blogger may have a nasty surprise waiting for them down the road. There is no one blueprint you can follow to assure you of success here, you have to work for it and the success will come eventually if you have the skill sets required. For example, you might make a reasonable income from your blog after a few months or it might take years to do it. Even then a reasonable income may not be enough to live on for the first couple of years anyway.
However, don't let this put you off to any extent. The sooner you start that blog you have in mind the sooner you will find out how much it could earn you. In time you may be a full time blogger, but you need to be determined enough to recognise that you need patience to negotiate that learning curve and perseverance to build up a large enough following to start earning money from it.

The idea of having a home business is traditionally one that seems very desirable, offering flexibility and even giving you more time to be romantic! You no longer have to worry about travelling to and from work every day, to be troubled by a boss that you don't like. You can also enjoy the power of being able to choose your own working hours instead of being stuck with ones that you do not like and which don't suit your lifestyle.
But home working is not always a bed of roses, the sooner that you realise this the more likely you will succeed with your own home business. This is not meant to put you off; working for yourself could be the best decision you will ever make. Lots of people who do so would never go back to working for someone else again. But it does not mean the whole process will be smooth and easy to cope with.
You will most definitely come across problems and issues from time to time. It could be argued that it is the very presence of such problems that enables you to build a business worth having. Not everything will be plain sailing but it is how you weather the storms that tell how good a business owner you really are.
The first thing to do if you are experiencing problems is to identify the nature of those problems. For example, are you having trouble receiving payments from people and businesses that you have worked for? Perhaps you are struggling to bring in new work to fill up your order book? Maybe there are other issues that are causing problems that you cannot solve. Whatever the problems might be, you need to tackle them as soon as possible and find a solution in order to drive the business forward again.
Once your problems are identified you can go about finding a solution for them. Sometimes you may need to think laterally to do this, because not all solutions are obvious to begin with. Don't panic if you don't think of one immediately either – sometimes it may take time for you to discover the solution you want.
You may need to implement new payment terms for example, asking for half the payment up front before work commences. This protects you against receiving no money at all if your customer refuses or cannot pay on completion. In the case of looking for more work, try and identify other ways of connecting with potential clients that you aren't using at the moment.
The point is that if you are struggling you can do something about it. Doing nothing is the only option you must not go for. If you do nothing you will only end up with a worse problem to solve eventually. And that doesn't drive your home business in the right direction at all.
The important thing to remember is that every business goes through tough times. It is how you deal with them that will mark you out as a success. Even recessions see some home businesses crumbling whilst others carry on thriving. How will yours fare?

Is it possible to dropship for the easiest home business ever? The answer is yes, but it isn't easy to get started. This is the warning every potential dropshipper should have, so they get off on the right foot instead of having the false starts that can so often happen with this business.
Let's start by exploring what dropshipping is. If you have limited space for storing stock to sell at home, dropshipping could solve your problems. You can basically offer items for sale just as you would normally – on a site like eBay for example – but you don't have to stock any of it.
Traditionally you sell on behalf of a dropshipping company. So what you would do is to gather orders from customers and then buy the items they want at the dropshipping price. Once you have placed the order yourself, the dropshipping company sends it out directly to the customer to fulfill the order.
The difference is that you buy the item for less than the customer does. Let's say for example that the customer buys an item for £10 plus £1 postage. You can buy the item for £6 plus £1 postage. The customer sends you £11 payment and you order the item direct from the dropshipper for £7. This means they fulfill the order themselves without you even having to see it. And you get £4 profit from that one sale simply by managing the emails and the order itself.
This is beneficial because you don't have to invest in stock up front. Instead the dropshipping company has all the stock and they take care of the physical process of packing and sending the order so you don't have to worry about it. All you do is list the items for sale and pocket the difference in the cash that you receive.
The trick is in finding the right dropshipping businesses to work with in the first place. They are out there but not all of them are easy to find. Searching on Google can be a start, and if you start reading up about the subject you are likely to find a variety of other sources.
Some wholesalers also offer a dropshipping service. But strangely enough they do not all advertise the fact. We know of people who have only discovered the service is there through asking to see if it is offered. Sometimes a quick question or email to the right person will give you the answer that you need.
Dropshipping does have distinct advantages over buying in stock and selling it yourself. You don't need to buy packaging; you don't need to visit the post office all the time and you don't need to worry about finding room for all the stock. As such it makes the perfect start up business from home, so keep an eye out for dropshipping opportunities.
You can also run a dropshipping business easily alongside a regular business that sells stock items as well. It doesn't have to be one or the other types of business.

Every home based business needs its own website to have a chance of finding new customers and clients. No matter what you do, you need to have a professional looking site that will draw people in.
This process starts with your domain name. If you have a relevant and well thought out domain name you can look forward to receiving free traffic of sorts. The search engines rank all websites on the internet organically, so you can get traffic for free if people find you through these results. But you need to have a good site in order for it to rank highly enough to be found, and this all starts with a good domain name.
For example if you have a site and a service that offers CV writing, you should try and find a domain name related to that service. But you need to think about who you are aiming at before you choose your domain name.
For example the easiest thing to think would be to try and get something along the lines of CVwriting.co.uk. But this would only be aimed at the UK market. For starters it uses CV – Americans use the word resume. And you also have the co.uk suffix. Now both of these things are fine if you are aiming purely at the UK market.
But supposing you want to attract worldwide clients? You could process work from abroad easily because you can get all the information you need from your client via email and send the completed work in the same way. If someone from the USA sees your domain name they might well think that you only work for people in the UK, so they would go elsewhere; one potential client lost to you.
Similarly though, if you had a domain name which just focused on resumes you might lose out on UK based clients. So for this example you would need to find something that focuses on everyone. How about CVsandResumes.com as being somewhat better? This would work and it also contains the main two keywords that show that you supply to all kinds of markets. The .com suffix is also viewed as being universal and applicable to a world business rather than one that only applies to a specific country.
So you can see why opting for your first choice of domain name can be the wrong decision to make. If you can focus on other alternatives and study the possible consequences of each name before making your decision, you will end up with a better domain name that is much stronger. You can find some free online tools on the internet that help you figure out all the options for choosing domain names if you feel you need some help. But strictly speaking spending more time making that decision is the best route to take.
Your domain name will stay with you and your home business for a long time. This is why you need to make sure that you pick the right one – one that will grab some free traffic from the internet, for your website, every day of the week.

Every home business needs new clients to survive. It doesn't matter how you earn your money either. You could be a photographer; you could write for a living or turn your hand to web design. But in every case the more clients that you have, the more secure your business will be.
When you first start your home-based business your main goal will be to find and nurture some clients as quickly as possible. But over time you should always maintain those efforts and keep on bringing in new customers. And this is precisely where some home workers go wrong.
The problem occurs when you settle for a comfortable number of clients, or you have just two or three that give you lots of work and make life seem easy for you. Its great all the time that you have those clients, but when you lose one you can really notice the difference. This is why you need the drive to secure as many clients as possible.
No matter how good your customers are you will always lose one or two of them eventually. Not all clients are the same and while some may stay with you long term, others will only want the odd job done every now and again. So we can see that having lots of clients' means your income is much safer. But there are other benefits to be had here too.
If you have a home business it is important to make sure you are visible so that new clients can find you. One of the best ways to do this is to create your own website. If a client gives you some good feedback or has nice things to say about you or the job you have just completed, ask if you can use their positive comments on your site. Testimonials can help you to add strength to your offering, because other local people are saying what they think of you and your work. This can be very convincing for people who are at the stage of considering hiring you.
The more clients that you have the more potential there is to get sound testimonials for your site. Ask them whether it would be possible to post their comments and in return, provide a link to their own site in exchange for the favour. Keep the original testimonial too because you may be required to provide it if anyone asks. You need to be able to prove they are genuine.
You will also learn more from having lots of clients. You will learn to juggle and manage your workload more efficiently. You will also learn how to work with lots of different people. Everyone has their own ways of working and if you are only used to working with two or three clients you will only have limited knowledge as a result.
So you can see that looking for new clients pays dividends in many different ways. Use this knowledge to help enhance and develop your business and you will be glad that you did. The future will be much brighter the more clients that you have.

It's a question that has both been asked and answered by many people. But while some people think that making money in this way is definitely over, there are plenty of PowerSellers who would beg to differ.
In case you don't know, PowerSellers are those people who are consistently selling a high volume and/or high monetary value of goods every single month on the site. If you don't keep those sales up you lose your PowerSeller status.
But let's get back to the idea of making money through EBay. Everyone can hop on there and sell off their second hand goods to make some extra cash. But if you want to be a proper seller you need to be able to buy at wholesale prices to resell at proper sales prices. So to start with you need to think about how you are going to do this and how you can fund buying your initial batch of stock.
The thing to remember is that you cannot expect to build up a huge business selling on eBay in five minutes. This is what some failed sellers seem to expect though. The ideal situation is to start off with lots of research into what sells and what does not. Choose your niche – the type of products you will sell – and then work out which ones sell the best. These are obviously the best ones to start with as you stand the best chance of making some good sales quickly.
The problem that many beginning sellers have is that they want to take money out of their business straightaway. And yet if you reinvest those profits you can buy more stock and develop at a much faster pace than you would otherwise – build your business!
The fact is that many people have started eBay businesses in recent times and have developed them into big success stories. It doesn't matter how many people are already on the site with similar products if you offer people what they want at good enough prices. But even if you do build up a successful business there is no guarantee that it will stay that way. You need to be constantly changing and adapting just as the market constantly changes and adapts.
It seems to be that some people expect it to be very easy. They expect to sell a few things on eBay and then turn into a roaring business success overnight. But it is hard work selling in this way. If you think you can spend just an hour or two every single day working at building up a proper business on the auction site, think again. You should also be thinking about how you can develop your own website and make sales from that – without flouting any of eBay's rules as you do so.
So yes, you can still make money on the auction site. You just have to be prepared to work hard to do it.

CCTV stands for closed circuit television. It is a system where the circuit is closed and all the elements are linked. This is different from broadcast TV where tuners pick up the signals from the airwaves. For purposes of this article, linked means connected by wiring, microwave, infrared, etc.
What's It Used For?
The most obvious and common use for CCTV is for security. This type of installation is used in a variety of locations such as stores, banks, and government buildings. However, there are so many other uses. It can be used for monitoring traffic. It is used in sports stadiums to focus on the audience. It can be hidden in trains and buses to detect vandalism. It can be used to monitor animals in a zoo. It can even be used to reproduce infrared vision. The applications are almost limitless.
What's In It?
It all starts with the camera. This creates the picture that is transmitted to the control area. Most CCTV cameras are not fitted with lenses. They must be obtained separately and screwed on. There is a standard screw thread although there are different mounts. Not all lenses have focus adjustment. Most have iris adjustment. Some wide angle lenses do not have a focus ring. There is a BNC jack for connecting the video cable. In the case of line powered cameras, this coaxial cable also provides power. The monitor is what receives the signal that the camera creates. A CCTV monitor is similar to a television set but it does not have tuning circuits.
Simple CCTV systems consist of a camera connected to a monitor with coaxial cable. This cable also carries the power needed for the camera. This is called a line powered camera. The Pye Observation System was such a system and was popular during the early days of CCTV. It was affordable and could be set up with a minimum of difficulty. The next big step in the technology was allowing for four cameras to be connected to the monitor simultaneously. The view could be programmed to cycle through the available cameras or go to a particular camera chosen by the user.
Record For Posterity
Another big advance was when footage could be recorded and stored. The footage would be played back according to the viewing cycle the user chose. Once the footage is recorded, it cannot be changed to go to a different camera. The next step would be cameras that were able move and swivel. Simple platforms that move on a horizontal plane are called scanners. If a platform moves on both vertical and horizontal units it is called a pan, tilt unit.
The concept of CCTV is simple enough to understand. It is the application of such technology that still holds many undiscovered gems. Such a simple concept can be tapped for its limitless potential. And for the end user, it can serve as a great tool to accomplish many different things. In the end, that is the most important thing.
