    Rating: R

    Length: 94 minutes

    Release Date: March 15, 2013

    Directed By: Brad Anderson

    Genre: Thriller

    Stars: 3 out of 5

Screenwriter Richard D'Ovidio's "The Call" takes the audience on a suspense-filled ride. Following in the footsteps of previous films like "Cellular" and "Phone Booth," the movie's story line begins with a simple telephone call. "The Call" pits a female heroine against a treacherous serial killer, both of whom are determined to be the one to decide the fate of a young female in peril. Although the movie opened to mixed reviews, it did quite well at the box office, raking in more than $17 million during its opening weekend.

Award-winning actress Halle Berry aptly plays the movie's lead role of Jordan Turner, an experienced 911 operator who works in the part of the Los Angeles emergency call center known as the hive. A few years before, Turner was shaken to the core during one of the most unforgettable 911 calls of her career. A young girl called reporting that someone was breaking into her home. Turner talks the girl into hiding from the intruder and then the call is cut off. She immediately hits redial, but the phone's ring only alerts the intruder to the girl's location and she is subsequently killed by the madman.

Turner takes a break from the hive's activity and moves into a position where she trains new recruits. One day while taking some trainees on a tour of the hive, another 911 operator gets a call from a young girl who has been kidnapped and is locked in the trunk of the kidnapper's car. The operator freezes and Turner takes over. The suspense-filled story line has Turner doing all she can to calm the girl down, coach her on how to kick out the car's tail light, and alert other drivers to her presence and look for the emergency release button.

Eventually the kidnapper stops the car and goes to get the terrified teen only to find her with a cell phone in hand. Once he takes the phone from her, Turner realizes it is the same villain who killed the other girl several years before. As her boyfriend, an officer with the LAPD, searches for the kidnapped girl, Turner decides to take matters into her own hands and she also goes in search of the killer. Turner eventually finds the villain's lair before he harms the frightened teen, and the rest of the story depicts the quintessential struggle of good versus evil.

Halle Berry was on a successful path with earlier roles in movies like "The Flintstones" and "X-Men," as well as television programs such as "Living Dolls" and "Knots Landing." It was her portrayal of Leticia Musgrove in the 2001 smash hit "Monster's Ball" that won her an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role and solidified her well-deserved celebrity. Berry went on to play starring roles in "Gothika," "Catwoman," "X-Men: The Last Stand," and "Dark Tide."

Abigail Breslin does a spectacular job playing the role of the teen Casey Welson, despite the hardship of most scenes being filmed in a space built to look like the inside of the trunk of a car. Breslin made her film debut at the tender age of six when she played alongside Mel Gibson in the 2002 hit film "Signs." She went on to make appearances in many television shows, including "Grey's Anatomy" and "Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit," and also played lead roles in popular films such as "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" and "My Sister's Keeper." Her role as Olive Hoover in the 2006 movie "Little Miss Sunshine" won Breslin a Critic's Choice Award for Best Young Actress and several other awards and nominations.

Michael Eklund did a superb job at bringing out the villain in his role as the serial killer Michael Foster. Eklund, who made his acting debut in 2000, has had plenty of experience with suspense and thriller movies, having played roles in films such as "House of the Dead," "88 Minutes," and "Walk All Over Me."

Director Brad Anderson cut his teeth on indie productions like the film "Next Stop Wonderland" and the television production "The Wire." Despite this being his first truly commercial film, he shows off his talent by doing what he does best-keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.

"The Call" does stumble a bit toward the end once the conversation between the hive and the kidnap victim in the trunk of the car ends, but it is still a movie worth seeing. Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin make a formidable team, and it is easy to root for these two as they try to save themselves-Breslin as she tries to break free of the villain and Berry as she tries to redeem herself from the victim she lost several years earlier.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

So "GI Joe: Retaliation" was supposed to be released last year to rave reviews, with product tie-ins and a huge release that was supposed to make people in Hollywood way rich and more famous than they already are. The original release date was set at June 29, 2012, which put it in exactly the spot where an action-packed mega-super-duper-budget blockbuster extravaganza would want to occupy for the traditional summer ticket sales. The posters were painted, the entertainment press had been alerted that something entertaining was about to happen, and then nothing. Nothing happened on time. The film, which had a budget of $130 million, just up and disappeared from the coming attractions list. Paramount Pictures, which had funded the whole shebang, had very little in the way of an explanation. When news broke-very quietly, of course-that the movie was back on the shelf until the next spring, some kind of explanation seemed called for. Thus Paramount told audiences that "GI Joe: Retaliation" had been sent back to post for conversion into a 3-D picture and not to worry about it, since the conversion, which usually costs between $10 and $15 million and leaves a movie looking like it was shot through a pair of black nylons, wasn't going to push the film over its budget. What's really going on?

Make no mistake, a $130 million project that's being as aggressively marketed and cross-promoted as "GI Joe: Retaliation" doesn't just get pulled to give it a quick and dirty 3-D retrofit. One clue to the real story seems to be that before it was pulled, the film had already made it to test screenings. Test screenings are perhaps among the most transparently bad ideas in Hollywood. The idea seems totally sound, right? Since the movie is a major investment, why not release it to a limited number of people for feedback and incorporate their ideas into the film prior to its main release? The idea seems to be that if there's some kind of weakness in the picture, running the movie past a sample of the very public that will be paying to see it couldn't hurt.

The problem with this is that the movie-going public is the movie-going public for a reason. That is to say, people who go to movies usually do so because they don't make their own. When people whose only connection to cinema is that they haven't figured out how to rip movies off of BitTorrent are consulted as an integral part of the filmmaking process, strange things can happen. One of these strange things may be known as the "Channing Tatum Effect," in honor of the star of "GI Joe: Retaliation." See, when a test audience is shown a huge-budget special effects-laden noisy blockbuster and doesn't like it, studio executives start having terrible visions of dollar bills with little wings on them fluttering away like sad little butterflies. The result is often a rush to "fix" whatever the test audiences said was "wrong" with the film.

The results of this can sometimes be comically bad, as when "I Am Legend" got a negative reaction from its screeners and was immediately reworked, with the ending reshot to eliminate the thinky, highbrow concept that Will Smith had been the bad guy all along, and the zombie vampires he'd been slaughtering with abandonment were actually thinking, loving creatures who were terrified of him. The new, audience-approved version just had him going down in a blaze of glorious violence, lest audiences be forced to consider a message of tolerance and compassion.

Another example of this effect is that of Harrison Ford's narration at the end of "Blade Runner," in which the original, very depressing meditation on mortality and what it means to be alive gave way to a happy tale about finding true love and leaving behind the no-fun post-apocalypse world the whole movie had been shot in. According to Terry Gilliam, something very similar happened to the domestic release of "Brazil."

So is that what's going on here? It's known that "GI Joe: Retaliation" got reviews that ranged from mediocre to bad, according to the review site Deadline. One silver lining to the film's overall chilly reception seems to have been the friendly bromance between Channing Tatum's Duke and Dwayne Johnson's Roadblock. Considering that Duke died near the beginning of the movie, this clearly was a problem. So it seems that "GI Joe: Retaliation" isn't just getting a 3-D workup, but that the entire film had been reshot to give the people what they want: more Channing.

    Rating: PG-13

    Length: 90 minutes

    Release Date: Oct. 19, 2012

    Directed by: Sally Potter

    Genre: Drama

    Stars: 3 out of 5

Born in the same London hospital room on a day in 1945 when an atomic bomb brings devastation to Hiroshima, Ginger and Rosa become childhood best friends. The story picks up after the dramatic opening sequence with a jump to fifteen years in the future. Now teenagers, the girls are dealing with everything that age range entails. Hormones, new discoveries, relationship struggles, and family matters pervade the film, and all of it is set to a backdrop of 1960s music and paranoia about the Cold War.

Director Sally Potter brings a large vision to "Ginger & Rosa," and she manages to pull some of it off with the help of a brilliant cast. Ginger is played by Elle Fanning, who made her film debut more than a decade ago by playing younger versions of her sister Dakota in movies like "I Am Sam." Since those days, Elle has proven her own worth as a well-rounded actress by turning in excellent performances in recent movies like "Because of Winn-Dixie," "Super 8," and "We Bought a Zoo."

Rosa is played by another young actress with a winning Hollywood pedigree. Although her résumé is shorter than Fanning's, Alice Englert is the daughter of award-winning filmmakers and recently starred in "Beautiful Creatures." Other notable cast members in "Ginger & Rosa" include Annette Bening, Oliver Platt, Timothy Spall, and Christina Hendricks.

Though they are backed by a number of experienced performing artists, Fanning and Englert carry the bulk of the movie due to the subject matter. A myriad of themes and secondary plot lines imbue the film, but at its heart, it is still a movie about two teenage girls coming of age in a decade fraught with social and political change. As the girls discuss world issues, such as the Cuban missile crisis, they learn that fear, loss, and disappointment can also hit close to home in many small ways.

Ginger sees her family fall apart as the result of an affair. The girls see their friendship suffer, seemingly as a result of Rosa's actions and betrayal of Ginger but more likely the result of growing up. While Rosa seeks relief in the sexual, emotional, and social freedoms of 1960s London, Ginger buries herself in the liberating world of politics.

Potter does a fabulous job of bringing the angst of the teenage years, the dreamy quality involved in coming of age, and the turmoil of the 1960s to the screen. Perhaps one of the biggest accomplishments for "Ginger & Rosa" is that the story manages to do so much in a 90-minute timeframe. At a time when blockbuster movies are often more than two hours long, it is refreshing to see a director bring a short movie to life in a way that provides an emotional hit for the audience.

"Ginger & Rosa" does fall down in some places. Hendrick's portrayal as Ginger's mother is forced at times, and the story might be viewed as grim by some. Fans of Potter's less traditional work, like "Orlando" and "The Tango Lesson," may also be disappointed by the general-audience feel of "Ginger & Rosa." That being said, the stellar teen performances in this film go far to redeem any lackluster qualities in the story. The young actresses convey intensity, innocence, and isolation in all the right places. They deliver a dual performance that is memorable, though most people are going to remember Fanning's contribution a bit more clearly. That's to be expected since she is the more experienced actress, even if she had her first onscreen kiss during this movie.

In addition to engaging performances from Fanning and Englert, viewers will be captured by Potter's treatment of the historical setting. The film is full of icons and symbols, including a feminist poet played by Annette Bening, plenty of 1960s jazz, and radio broadcasts about Cold War dangers. Potter contrasts these historic images early in the film with pictures of the friendship between Ginger and Rosa. The girls engage in a number of timeless activities, including fixing each other's hair and practicing kisses amid a fit of giggles.

Overall, "Ginger & Rosa" is a thoughtful film that reaches out of the Cold War era and into the hearts of modern viewers. Some things have changed in the world since the time of "Ginger & Rosa," but friendship, betrayal, and growing up are still very much the same.

Article Title: Second GI Joe May Redeem the Franchise For Hardcore Fans

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Numerous children of the 1980s looked forward to introducing their offspring to the awesomeness of GI Joe when a live-action movie was announced several years ago. "GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra" hit theaters in 2009 to mixed reviews; most called it a fun adventure that was great for a family-movie night, but hardcore fans were disappointed that the flick didn't live up to the original comic-book experience. Specifically, the questionable casting of Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the character that became Cobra Commander and the changes in Cobra's development and the Joe's base of operations had fans shaking their heads. The franchise is back this year with a second movie but is under new management, and director Jon M. Chu seems to understand the heart of GI Joe's most loyal fans.

In addition to a new director, "GI Joe: Retaliation" benefits from a new writing team and the addition of several iconic characters. For writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the first course of action seems to be an annihilation of as much of the first film as possible. To that end, they quickly kill off a number of Joe characters from the first movie. Luckily, the writers still had some strong personalities left in the GI Joe stable, so viewers are treated to a story involving Flint, Roadblock, and Lady Jaye.

Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson) is a favorite among Joe fans because of his rock-like exterior and surprisingly deep interior. In the original comic, Roadblock aspired to be a chef before being recruited to the Army. As a soldier, he served double duty as a cook and a heavy machine gunner. Johnson is a genius casting decision for the character, because Roadblock is one of the biggest and strongest Joes. Despite a few stints in less-than-perfect family comedies, Johnson has shown his ability to be the tough hero in movies like "Walking Tall."

The next addition to the cast is Flint. Played by relative newcomer DJ Cotrona ("Venom"), Flint is usually portrayed as being third in command within the Joe structure after General Hawk and Duke. Flint is highly educated and a bit of an A-personality; in various renditions of the Joe mythos, Flint holds honors from just about every organization available. Flint usually provides the tactical planning behind Joe missions. Casting Cotrona in this role is a good choice, as he can deliver enough muscle to become believable as a Joe without vying for the toughest-man prize with Johnson's character.

A Joe movie wouldn't be complete without an attractive and kick-butt female soldier. Since the first movie included Scarlett and Cover Girl, the logical choice for "GI Joe: Retaliation" was Lady Jaye. Old school Joe fans will appreciate the fact that she is included in the movie with Flint, since the two had a romance in the 1980s animated Joe series. Jaye (Adrianne Palicki) is also a highly educated officer. She is an expert at numerous weapons, including the crossbow, and is the Joe covert-ops specialist. Palicki, who also starred in the 2012 remake of "Red Dawn" and played Wonder Woman in the 2011 made-for-television movie, is a great and believable choice for the powerhouse female soldier.

Other new characters or casting additions in "GI Joe: Retaliation" include General Joe Colton (Bruce Willis). For some action fans, this decision probably addresses a major oversight in the first movie, as many feel a blow-em-up flick cannot be made properly without Willis. Another interesting cast choice is Walter Goggins, who plays Warden Nigel James. Goggins, who is well known for his role in the television show "Justified," has turned in admirable roles in previous action movies. Channing Tatum and Ray Park reprise their roles as Duke and Snake Eyes from the first film.

One change that has many Joe fans buzzing is the role of Cobra Commander in "GI Joe: Retaliation." Instead of bringing Joseph Gordon-Levitt back to continue the part, the filmmakers cast another relative newcomer, Luke Bracey. Although Gordon-Levitt is a phenomenal actor with an ever-growing resume and the ability to deliver on a variety of roles, he didn't quite have the right set of attributes to pull off the cherished villain. Bracey's deeper voice and less well-known appearance are actually more suited to Cobra Commander.

Overall, "GI Joe: Retaliation" is an improvement on the first Joe movie. It retains all of the fun of the first movie, includes some great banter between Johnson and Channing, and begins a rescue of the franchise for hardcore fans. Newer fans will appreciate the action-packed flick, while older fans can revel in the return of true Joe mentality.

Most people miss the hidden assets MP3 audio books have that make life a great deal easier in many ways.

For instance, do you like to exercise to stay in great shape and feel like a tiger, full of boundless energy? Or, does your workout feel more like a constant dread? If your case is the latter, MP3 audio books can help you transform it from an unhappy to a fun activity.

There is a not-so-completely new way of doing workouts besides listening to music or radio. And the new way brings the convenience of MP3 audio books, allowing you to grab more benefits at once while working out.

If you want to maximize your workout by using MP3 audio books "as triggers", read on to find out more.

There are educational MP3 audio books that will teach you about exciting and effective ways of staying in shape. Many people who exercise don't even have a clue how to do it right. Instead of guessing it, there are great audio books that guide the listeners to quicker, more satisfying, and lasting results.

The trouble sometimes is that no matter how much you think you already know about working out, there are MP3 audio books out there that show you much better ways others miss.

Some of these workout-related audio books come with calming music in the background, thus making you stay focused and attentive during the workout like a bulldog on a bone.

During workouts, audio books help to take your mind away from the physical activity. They act as "triggers". Instead of concentrating on the no-pain-no-gain workout, the messages contained in the MP3 audio book help you trigger other thoughts, giving you extra energy and different focus.

Both the extra energy and different focus allow you to work out longer and more effectively.

For example, if you usually run for, say 30 minutes, with an interesting audio book you will be able to increase the jogging time to, say 50 minutes or more. It can mean a big difference from "dreaded" into "longer and rewarding", what do you say?

Certain MP3 audio books that talk about the importance of staying in shape and looking great deliver necessary motivation to your ears. Often, it's the motivation we need – in the right moment, at the right time.

They give you an audible parade of more reasons why you should stay at it working out, instead of mulling over reasons to bail out. The MP3 books can become your personal coaches for a lot less than a live one would cost.

Glance at the three titles you can look up and take for a "test-drive" next time you are exercising in some way.

    Suggestion # 1:

The Thin Commandments Diet … by Dr Stephen Gullo, PhD.

In The Thin Commandments Diet, Dr. Stephen Gullo lets you in on his unique weight-loss program that has a success rate that is many times higher than the national average.

    Suggestion # 2:

A Guide To Walking Fitness … by Andy Guides

Do you ever wish that you could get in better shape, tone those muscles, lose some weight and achieve better health without killing yourself while doing it? Fitness walking is a great way to do this if you know how.

    Suggestion # 3:

    Ultra-Metabolism … by Mark Hyman, M. D

An instant New York Times best-seller, Ultra-Metabolism finally reveals why it's so hard to lose weight. Allow Dr. Hyman to run through the reasons for weight retention.

Yup, it still takes some guts and perseverance. But on the other hand, if you can make your exercise easier and more in flow, it now hinges only on your decision to check out and download MP3 audio books into your MP3 player and way you go.

There's a free video help with how to do that at http://mybigaudio.com/help.html if you ever need it.

Think about it for a second and make it happen. Easy-to-carry MP3 audio books can help you stick to your workout plan. And that may eventually lead you to looking and feeling great.

Self-help audio books have been silently tuning up the minds of people around the world for many years. These days, superfast technologies allow you to comfortably download audio books within minutes and start your self-help audio books "mind massage" on the double.

That is if you've paid attention to the food-for-thought your mind's been grabbing and chewing on from what's out there.

Do you think many people take notice about what gets into their minds? And do you think many of them take control of how their mind processes it towards a better outcome?

That's where self-help audio books play a significant role. Because they can provide you, the listener, with better-quality input and how-to ideas to overcoming challenges. You just simply never know what new doors open when you download MP3 audio books with better food for your thoughts.

After all, the mind is the single most significant cause in shaping who you are and what you do as an individual.

If your mind is overall upbeat and resourceful, you have the core building blocks to becoming an "improved you" as opposed to having a widespread down-the-slumps thinking.

In contrast, a negative-mind environment unnecessarily increases the likelihood of you spending mega efforts on doing anything in life. Analyzing the lives of some of the most notorious people in the world reveals that they always fed their minds with negative thoughts.

You've heard this probably million times, haven't you?

When you look around at examples of successful people today you'll notice they've taken a good chunk of time to work on improving their minds. Scores of them have used any help they could put their paws on. Self-help audio books recordings are among them.

The question that pops up is this: "Are we born with positive or negative minds?"

What's your answer to that question?

Research suggests that we develop our minds by what we feed them with. Stuffing "the negative" into our minds repeatedly results in cultivating negative views and eventually negative actions.

So, if you want to build creative ideas and views, it simply makes sense to always seek and get the right information into your mind.

The most common way to do this is to select the right books to read.

Sadly, though, who's got the time today to read lots of books regularly?

We barely have the time to read the newspapers and magazines while gulping down our breakfast, lunch or supper. And guess what? Most newspapers only end up giving us bad-'n-sad news that further swells up a negative state of mind.

So, are you up to getting positive and helpful information without having to scrape extra time to do that?

Look into the self-help audio books. They are popular because they are helpful and they fit people's schedules without radical adjustments.

Today, you can enjoy instant benefits of downloadable MP3 audio books while exercising, commuting to your work.

Article Title: Audio Books: Why Recorded Books On Tape And Mp3 Books Win Over Books On Cd?

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

You've seen audio books in many formats, haven't you? Recorded books, as they are also called, come on CDs and tapes. The latest technology has created MP3 books. As weird as it may sound, many people like recorded books on tape better than books on CD. Read along to learn why.

Although CDs are great, but when it comes to listening to recorded books, books on tape are the long-term consumer's favorite.

As a sideline, MP3 books are the new kids on the block. They offer even more flexibility and convenience. Above all formats, MP3 books cut out the fancy packaging, the mail carrier or extra shopping trips. How would an instant download at home suit your busy schedule?

Overall, their superior storage, unnoticeable portability and better price make them superior above other formats so far.

But what's with recorded books on tape being superior to books on CD?

    1. Most audio books on CD are incapable of holding more than 75 minutes of content. On the other hand, books on tape cram 90 plus minutes of voice-over.

Sure, you can have the complete audio book copied out over several CDs. But who wants to haul around a heavyweight case with CDs, right?

So, a few tape cassettes will do you for a particular audio book. In contrast, you will need many more CDs for that same audio book.

    2. Would you spend extra money for audio books on CD when you can get the same book on tape (or in MP3 format) for less?

Here's a quick example to explain:

An unabridged version of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" slims down to nest in 12 audiotapes. It sells for a mere $31.96 on the Barnes & Noble. Ready for the CD numbers now? The same version there, on CDs, costs roughly double the amount - $55.96. And you'll have 5 more items to handle 'cause there are 17 sets of CDs.

Now, you are thinking … "What a rip off!"

    Whoa!

It's far from being fleeced. CDs simply cost much more time and money to produce. Because of the extra outlays, the price tag is higher than the one for the tapes.

    3. This one's clear. When you turn off your CD player while listening to an audio book, often, you won't be able to carry on from the exact spot you left off. With a tape, you can continue from the exact track location you left off.

Imagine how annoying this can be if you are driving and you turn off your car. You'd need to kick-start the audio book CD and patiently locate the spot where you stopped at.

If you have a more advanced CD player that saves your location when you turn off your car, then it's no problem until …

You shut off the car and pull out the CD.

    Oops.

If you do the same with an audiocassette, the spot where you left off is waiting for you when you push the tape back into the player.

    4. You may or may not agree with me here. Audio books, after all, are narrations. Many recorded books enthusiasts are smart. They say …"Why would I spend the extra cash to buy CDs because of recording quality level when I can snatch near enough the same quality on audiotapes for much less?"

It boils down to the reality that a human voice recording has little to gain in depth and clarity when recorded on a CD as an alternative of a tape cassette.

Recorded books are here to stay. You, too, may prefer books on tape over books on CD. The tape benefits clearly outweigh the ones of CDs. Have they surprised you at all?

With the entrance of MP3 players and MP3-enabled cellular phones, you can be in good company with audio books MP3 of your choice anywhere you go. The pure ease of use for MP3 books pushes them to the top of modern portable conveniences. They allow for a fun-on-the-go cruising or an educational makeover without trying to find the extra time.

Time schedules are packed solid these days for most of us. Can you easily set aside time for some old-fashioned reading? Bet it's a chore to do it. Yet, without reading any books, learning's put on the proverbial back burner. Have you been missing fun and entertainment reading, too?

There is a solution to this problem. MP3 books and the progress in computer technologies are here to help all of us who crave to be well-read regardless of time demands.

Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy and other top business speakers of America have mentioned the phrase "university on wheels" in their presentations countless times. First, the hidden magic behind the phrase doesn't sink in at all. "So what, there's nothing new or revolutionary about it," you may say. But, once you give it deeper attention, there opens a new world of possibilities.

And it all happens effortlessly over relatively a short period of time.

What the top speakers are referring to is the powerful value you get from listening to professional recorded books while driving to and from work every morning.

You see, instead of "wasting" as many as 2 or often more hours every single day while commuting to work; now you have a choice that can swiftly change your life.

Some people turn on the radio while driving to work and spend the time listening to music or the news. There's nothing wrong with that.

Now, though, here is a fact worth considering.

Did you know that just by listening to various quality recorded books every morning, as you commute to work, can help you turn into an expert on that topic within a short period of time?

It's like going through a private university without the financial and have-to-attend-lectures needs.

Worth considering, isn't it? Especially with the flexibility recorded books offer.

I know the idea might not make sense to you just yet, but stay with me while I try to explain why I said that.

Think about it, in some university degree programs, students spend no more than 10 hours weekly attending their lectures. And after a few years they get their degrees framed on the wall.

And what do they mostly do during these 10 hours each week?

You guessed it – they mainly "listen" to their lecturers to be able to write their exams.

Many people miss this fact. You can get the same value from just listening to the right audio books. And that's in the field or area of expertise you want to learn about minus writing the exams.

I realize that no university will give you a degree certificate after you have completed your chosen recorded books. But as they say, knowledge is power. And specialized knowledge put to good use is the winning ticket of how to get ahead in today's world.

Did you know there are certain professional audio book programs that will give you exams after completing their training programs... and will give you a certificate for passing their course?

Many such certificates can be used in certain places to give evidence of your expertise in that area.

You turned a specialized expert in what interests you? And all the transformation occurred while you were driving and barely noticed it?

In that case, why would you continue to "waste" valuable time on your daily commute? As they say, you can "kill 2 birds with one stone" by using the same hours to learn a new skill. How about a new business idea, a new profession perhaps?

To start, ask yourself what new skill or expertise you'd love to learn. When you've picked a few topics of interest, hop online and search for recorded books or MP3 books you'd like to start with.

Once you grab them, you can start your "university on wheels" program next time you drive to and from work.

Recorded books come in downloadable MP3 formats, on CDs, or cassettes. Today's brilliant technologies give you choices hard to ignore.

Come to think of it, even if you don't drive to work, you can easily do it. Grab a portable CD, cassette or Mp3 player and still benefit from your "digital university on wheels" program 'cause audio books can go with you anywhere - anytime. The "wheels" can even be the ones on your rollerblades, bicycle, or a skateboard.

Become an expert on any topic through the transformational power of MP3 books. The process of how to do it is simple. All you need to do is to follow through on your decision to become one. You'll be amazed what recorded books can do for you.

The most important factor could damage your leather handbag is whether conditions. Both humidity and dryness are great natural enemies of leather. Apart form avoid not keeping your handbag away from these danger conditions, you have to use oil or commercial leather conditioners to maintain the proper level of moisture in the leather. Without these conditioners, leather may dry and cracks even though it is kept and neutral temperature. The proper frequency of using conditioner is probably once a week, but it is also depends on the common whether in your area. Apply too often conditioner provides no harmful to leather surface so you may apply more frequent, but once a week is really enough. One thing that you have to be careful is that do not leave your handbag start to distress and you start to use conditioner, because it could be too late.

Water is another thing that may harmful to your handbag. Even though leather already has great ability to resist from wet but you still have to be careful not to let your handbag directly touch with water. But if your handbag becomes wet, use air dryer to fry it as quickly as possible. You have to use lowest speed of hair dryer, otherwise the high degree of heat may destroy the leather structure. Do not let the bag dry without using hair dryer, because it could take longer and this will make damp accumulate on the leather skin then moan will finally appear. Keep the bag away from heat sources and be sure that it is stuffed with tissues. Condition the handbag once while it is still damp and again after it is completely dry. After you can make sure that the bag is completely dry, remove all stuff from the bag and stuff it with small amount of tissue paper to maintain its shape and dry it again in the well-ventilation room for about 10 minutes.

In fact, stains probably the thing that easiest to clean but it could be also harmful to your handbag if you clean it in the wrong way. The regular dust and stain usually can be cleaned by damp soft clothe or soft sponge. However, the stain is much and quite difficult to clean, you may use a lightweight scouring pad, but you have to do it with extreme caution to avoid scratching the leather.

The introduction sentence of this article maybe make you doubt that is what to choose money clipping or wallet really all about. In fact, the following article includes some updated and useful information about the way of using wallet and reason to consider what you can choose between money clipping and wallet. The information describe below is what you can use. If you find yourself confused by what you've read to this point, don't despair. Everything should be crystal clear by the time you finish. If you've picked some pointers about this topic that you can put into action, and then by all means, do so. You won't really be able to gain any benefits from your new knowledge if you don't use it.

The traditional way of keeping things at one place is probably using purse or wallet. There is also some other traditional way of keeping everything together. You may have seen a person who still having folded bank notes and all other stuff like credit card and tied them all with rubber band. Or some of your friend may get used to rolling bank notes up in balls in his front pocket. Even though these ways of carrying stuff still exist but personally, I think it's time for them to change to new way like any other men do. That is using leather wallet or using money clips to keep things in your pocket. But there is still one question left, which is if they want to choose, wallet or money clips that should go for.

In fact, both leather wallet and money clips are suitable for men. They are different only in terms of design but it does not mean that you have to stick at one think and do not think about changing from using one to another. Leather wallet generally gains advantage in terms of space to contain things, greater protection to your stuff and provide professional look. Meanwhile money clips is more casual, comfortable and freestyle. Many people think that leather wallet suitable for people who normally have bank notes and credit cards such as business people and money clips is more suitable for people who love casual and light weight stuff such as university student and artists. Even though the fact described above is quite true but do not limit yourself to just one type of these things.

The basic type of leather wallet is bi-fold. It is the most classing wallet types that are available in the market. Bi-fold type also with a crease down the middle and a fold to hold your bills and you may like the tri-fold wallet to choose. If you have some of credit cards and always carry them. I suggest you to go for leather wallet as they need extra protection such as from water and heat. Keep all credit cards in leather wallet so you can make sure that you will not lose re damage them. On the other hand if you are the person who do not have anything much too carry apart from cash and some id cards and need kind of thing that could provide comfort when carry them, money clips is what you have to choose.

You should be able to find several indispensable facts that somebody have never discovered. As it is a kind of experiment with your CD case. So information about how to test it in the following paragraphs may be very useful or has just little use more or less. If there's at least one fact you didn't know before, imagine the difference it might make. In fact this is just my own suggestion and I have learnt it from my own experience and it may not always fit to any one. Therefore, carefully reading and consider whether information I have provided below is practical for you. Follow my step without careful consider may harm your CD case and you will make your favourite one broken by your own.

Most of people who bought CD case may not interest to test it to see whether they are strong enough to protect your favourite CDs. Generally, many people could satisfy and think that they is good enough just be case they can protect them from basic dangers such as wet, hot and cold temperature, and soft pressure. In fact, in my opinion is that is just quite not enough. Imagine that of you have very old rare compact discs and it could not be replaced if damage or lost. I guess that you will never want to keep it in low quality case.

Now I am about to tell you about the way that I use to test it once I have bought it. This is because I have a lot of them. Firstly, I have to make sure that the one you have bought can protect my CD from water and some other kind of hot drinks such as coffee. Because I often carry the case to every where I go and often in a coffee shop. Some times you may find that some kind of them are not resist to hot water, the plastic and coating colour will become melting when there is hot water pour on it. So the method of test is very, just drop some hot coffee on your CD case and see whether it could resist to hot water.

Second thing that you have to think about is protecting your favourite CDs from chemical agent. Some of you may argue that this kind of protection is absolutely unnecessary because there is almost no chance that they will be damaged by chemical. In fact, there are some types of chemical agents that usually found in you house and they definitely harmful to them such as detergent, alcohol etc. However, I am not encouraging you to apply those chemical on them because you my lose it, but please bare in mind that you should keep away from these chemical agents or choose the type that anti chemical when you buy a CD case. The last one that I would like to emphasize is heat. Heat can damage them inside the case. So make sure that you will not leave your case in a car that you have to leave the car in strong sunlight.

It seems that today, almost any topic is open for debate and widely discussed. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed. See how much you can learn about how to choose good quality briefcase when you take a little time to read a well-researched article. If you apply what you've just learned about what I am going to present below, you should have nothing to worry about.

Briefcase is one of the most important accessories for business people. As there are plenty of models and styles of briefcase to choose from particularly, leather briefcase that very popular among users. Also there are a lot of tips and guidelines on how to choose good quality briefcase. If you are the person who has some experience with choosing many kind of briefcase so there will be less problem. But for many of you who are choosing briefcase for the first time, there will be something that you have to learn before shopping for your briefcase. If this is your first briefcase you need to look for something you're comfortable with. It is also depends on what kind of professional you are. If you are a lawyer or accountant, I assumed that you are regularly carry large collection of papers, so you may need larger briefcase than people who working in other career. However, if you have to carry lots of paper, there are shoulder straps available as additional accessory to provide more comfort. Lawyer and accountant mostly prefer leather briefcase and the most favourite colors are black or dark brown. However, some people may like other kind of material such as ballistic nylon with leather trim that are durable and have a professional look.

It is quite difficult to imagine yourself when you carrying briefcase. Some people are really concern about what they look like when carrying a brief case. As there are many company produce a lot of briefcase design and sometimes these people prefer to carry a case on in front of a mirror to see how they look. This is quite strange buying behaviour but I have to admit that it is really works. On the other hand, for someone who chooses to use shoulder straps can also do the same to see if they fit your shoulder and are more comfortable than the old style thinner strap. This tips, however, is not compulsory for everyone, but it still good to do so and the brief case have to stay with you all the time and sometimes it is affecting you look as a professional in you career perspective.

If you are already have a briefcase but want to get a new one, which could be larger or smaller than the existing one. Do not forget to bring them to the shop to compare size before you buy the new briefcase. This is because in most case, I found that people could not estimate the size of existing case exactly to compare the size with new one. So when they bought the new one, which sometimes do not have much different size.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

The following article includes pertinent information that may cause you to reconsider what you thought you understood. The most important thing is to study with an open mind and be willing to revise your understanding if necessary. The information about the topic of what you have to know more about leather wallet presented here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you have already known or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes. After carefully read this article, you can be more confident when you have to choose a leather wallet for your own.

Sometimes, when people start to looking for a personal wallet, most of them seem to be very confused when they have to stop at any local retailer to find an array of wallets ranging from prices and designs. The point is they could not define the different between expensive and cheap wallet, so they could be misunderstood when they have to choose one. One of the most important factors that consider the quality of wallet, the material that they are made from. The material indicates many things, including life expectancy of that wallet. Durable is the factor that many people would use to consider quality of the wallet they are going to buy. Basically, a wallet is something that men could buy once and not have to think about for quite a while, which means the wallet should be durable and need less care and easy maintenance. So the best solution that many of them would go for is using leather wallet.

When you have time to go out and shopping for a wallet, you may find that there are plenty of design and material available, but mostly you will see is that leather wallet is the type that many shops has provided for customers. However, leather that made wallet can be divided into several types, which are normal leather and faux pa leather. According to the different of quality of each leather type, so there are also different in terms of durable and price of wallet that made from both type of leather. So the first question that you have to answer is what kind of leather you want. There is a variety of leather type such as lambskin, rawhide, ostrich leather, alligator leather and their price is also vary. Normally, wallets that made from pure natural leather such as lambskin and alligator leather are more expensive than leather that made from mixture of natural and synthetic leather. However, even though the quality of pure natural leather is the best but in case if you have very limited budget, you may choose the latter type to save money.

Another area that use for consider the quality of wallet is the threading. Threading seems not to be very important and it is generally overlooked. But the format of threading is very important as we ca see that sturdy, thick thread is going to improve the construction of the wallet. For example, sturdy, thick thread will represent the strong quality of wallet as you can make sure that the wallet was made neatly. Also there are many colour of threads available today to suit your needs such as yellow, black, brown, and taupe are just a few examples of the color scheme you can choose from. Threading is probably the fir thing that you have to consider but it is still good to look into as threading is a key indicator to tell about the wallet's lifetime.

Sunglasses case may be something that most of people do not pay attention to when they have to choose one. In fact, it should not be like that because for someone who has kind of brand name sunglasses may need good quality case of their sunglasses to provide maximum protection. However, there are some people who may want only simple case that can store sunglasses s they may need cheaper case to protect their lenses from being scratched, a simple pocket-style sunglasses. Therefore, it is very necessary for you to identify initial purpose of use before buying your sunglasses case whether you need ordinary one or exclusive ones so you will have clearer direction before you decide to choose.

There are two main types of sunglasses, pocket-style and hard-shell case. You may choose the type that suitable for your needs the most. A pocket-style sunglasses case is generally made from stiff cloth and soft. This type of case is normally suitable for general type of sunglasses. Because a pocket style will have one side open to let the person take and take out sunglasses easily so it is very convenient to remove and replace the sunglasses when not in use. However, this type of sunglasses case could not provide much protection so your glasses may be in risk of broken.

The second type of sunglasses case is hard case. For some of you who has very expensive one and need full protection, you may need hard case. Hard case is completely different from the soft type. That is the hard type made from harder materials to increase protection such as plastic, fiber glass, vinyl etc. Also the different is the usage. Hard case generally could not be opened on the edge of the case, instead, you will need to flip the top portion of the sunglasses case up in order to get your sunglasses. This type is strongly recommended for ones who need extra protection, because apart from preventing sunglasses from broken, hard case could protect from severe temperature change, climate and chemical agents or even some accident that may occur such as drop.

If you are looking for a hard case for your sunglasses, the most important thing is you have to make sure that your sunglasses is properly fit to the case, but not to fit or to loose. This is because if the sunglasses s too fit sunglasses will rattle around inside the case and may still become damaged, but if too loose, sunglasses could shake and broken inside the case. However, you may not have to worry about finding high quality sunglasses case if you buy high-end brand name. This is because these brands generally provide its own case to customers and the quality of these cases is generally good so you do not have to look for additional case. Nevertheless, you may still need to have one spare case you might have to consider detail mentioned above as a guideline to choose quality sunglasses case. Make sure that you don't let important information about how to choose sunglasses gone by. It never hurts to be well-informed with the latest on it. Compare what you've learned here to future articles so that you can stay alert to changes.

When people gong to travel overseas, one of the most important stuff that all of them should think about is hotel accommodation, ticket, money and so on. However, there is a thing that you have to focus on, it is luggage. Luggage is considered as an very important stuff that should not be ignored. This is because you have to realise that one luggage will serve all of you travel needs, you just can not buy luggage every time you travel, so it is compulsory for you to learn a bit more about how to choose good quality luggage. According to the price of travel luggage today doesn't quite cheap, so you have to be carefully choose the one that worth you money. There are also some basic tips to help you decide what to buy and how much to spend. There are plenty of design and function of luggage available in the market so you can choose either trendy fashion or sensible travel luggage. However, you should probably focus on function and durability of the luggage, especially if you are the person who travels frequently. This is because the more you use your luggage, the faster it will wear out.

Therefore, it should be worth your investment when you have to buy one. Moreover, for somebody who has limited budget may consider both function and price of the luggage. Also especially if you are considering to buy checking luggage, you may need to give first priority to the price. This is because if you buy trendy and expensive luggage, you may suffer a lot if they are stolen at the airport. Even though there is very little chance that your luggage will be lost in the airport or during airline transit. But I can guarantee that there is maximum chance that you will never get it back if you lost it.

There are two ways of buying travel luggage. For a person who usually travel alone may consider to buy individual piece but for some who always has a lot of stuff or frequent travel with friends or family, buying a set of travel luggage may be a better option. However, for some people who frequent travel on business purposes, all you need probably only one suite case and one small bag. However, it is strongly recommend that you should buy these bags only if they are included in a travel luggage set, which you can get a lot cheaper price that by them as single item. But no matter which way you chose to buy travel luggage, please make sure that you have already compared prices between brands before make decision. Even though you can choose to buy either a set or a single item, but buying in a set is seem to worth the value of money when you have used them for a while.

About style of the luggage, it is the element that should be taken into account. Especially for people who decided to buy single travel luggage. The factor to decide which style of the luggage you should have is how often you use it, if you are travel frequent and each rime is a very short trip, the large and heavy luggage may not suitable for you. On the other hand you should buy smaller hand-carry luggage instead, which will provide more flexible and comfort.

Would you like to find out what those-in-the-know have to say about my appreciation towards using travel luggage Samsonite brand? The information in the article below comes from my own experience about using this brand for a while and I just want to share with you all. The information about this brand presented here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you know about interest to use buy it or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes. The following article is not the promotional of product at all but I just would like to share good experience and I want you to have the same.

It can be said that in the travel luggage market today, consumers get the most advantage from the market competitiveness. Many of travel luggage providers launched massive of product designs and colors as well as ranges of price which you can afford. Some of you may have perception that this brand is always expensive but in fact they have a variety of prices which affordable in the same time they remain to have good quality as always. Apart from affordable price, the quality of this product is recognized widely of its durable material and light weight. I can guarantee that you will fell that the one you bought is never expensive if compare to its quality.

For someone who may have a little money to support expensive travel luggage. I also encourage you to invest with this brand. Comparing to buy only one best quality even though it is a bit expensive, but imagine that if you buy other brand every time you want to travel due to the lower quality than Samsonite. Frankly speaking, you may have to spend even more money than buying god quality one, so you should take this into account. Therefore, an effective price compare between brands is really needed in order to help you choosing travel luggage that has good quality and affordable price.

Apart from designs and colours that you may choose for your personal need, you have to consider other factor such as resistance to scratch, pressure and chemicals. This is because you may have seen how your travel luggage is transferred and care in the airport, especially if they are treated by airline staffs or even yourself. Therefore, it is compulsory that you have to bring all kind of factors to consider when you have to choose travel luggage, not only design and colours. The considerable time that one good quality luggage should last is about 3-4 years, but it can be sure that Samsonite can give you longer usage than that. Due to its world wide reputation, Samsonite is one of the top brands of travel and other kind of luggage with great customer support. Not only good quality luggage you will get from its product but also excellent customer service, especially after sale service. The company has warranty for every single luggage that they sell so you can make sire that you will get maximum customer service as well as good quality of products.

There are plenty of advantage and disadvantage when talk about leather luggage. The disadvantage of using leather luggage that we usually thought of are about its expensive price, compare to luggage that mad from other kind of material. Leather luggage may heavy than other kind of luggage and leather luggage has only limited design available. There is because most of people use leather carry-on type. We rarely see larger travel luggage that made from leather because it could be very expensive and heavy and you may not comfortable when carrying them. The most common type of leather that use for making carry-on luggage are Vacquetta leather and Quinley leather.

Even though we find that there are some disadvantage of using leather luggage, but there are also plenty of benefit too. Most of leather, apart from looking luxurious of the luggage itself, it is al has same functions as other kind of luggage has such as the features like multiple compartments to hold different items in your luggage. You may also find that the handle many leather bags also neatly wrapped as well as many of design has adjustable shoulder straps. Therefore you can make sure that you can find all function and accessories in leather luggage. Today the new innovation has driven new technology to let leather luggage even more developed. Some other functions have been added to leather luggage. The good example is wheeled leather luggage, which already available in general travel luggage, but now we can see leather travel luggage has wheel and enable you to carry it comfortably at the airport. Also, as we all know that leather is the material that very hard and difficult to stitch but now we can see leather luggage has zippered pockets to contain additional gadget or other small item that you wish to carry. Apart from that, leather luggage also has large compartment and more space to contain your stuff, you will never believe that you can use only one large leather luggage to travel for your own for 2-3 days trip.

Now we are going to talk about the kind of luggage that is very popular for people to use leather, we are talking about business briefcase or business case. As today, it can be said that every business people has their own laptop computer and they tend to keep their laptop computer in the business case. Therefore, new deigns and functions to accommodate the demand and they are also available in the market today. As same as travel luggage, leather business briefcase also has shoulder straps and skate wheels to provide comfortable and flexibility.

As you can see from the text described above about kind of leather luggage that available in the market today. However, there is another important factor that could not be ignored. You have to provide proper care if you wish to use leather luggage. This is because leather is the materials that need extra care such as you need to avoid any situation that will generate scratch on your leather luggage as well as avoid from strong sunlight as well as all kind of chemicals agents. Leather need polish from time to time to maintain the quality and flexibility.

Surveillance systems are not just for businesses anymore. As systems grow easier to use (and more affordable), many homeowners are using video surveillance to protect their home inside and out.

    Why Surveillance?

It's a proven fact that cameras deter crime. Unlike an alarm system, which is triggered by someone breaking into your home, a home surveillance system can help prevent a break-in from happening. Some criminals are willing to take a gamble when they see an alarm system sticker or yard sign, but not as many will risk being captured on camera.

A home surveillance system can be helpful inside the house, too. Indoor surveillance cameras can identify intruders and keep an eye on children or employees in the home.

    Getting Started

Before you purchase home surveillance equipment, you should consider your security needs. Here are some things to think about to help you decide what type of surveillance is right for you:

    • Consider your budget. The cost of home surveillance varies greatly depending on what you choose. You may want to splurge and invest in a top-of-the line digital surveillance system; if money's tight right now, you can purchase a "dummy" camera – only you'll know it's a fake.

    • Keep it simple. If you're new to home surveillance, start small. A basic system that consists of a camera or two, a monitor, and a VCR or DVR should be enough. You can always add features and equipment later.

    • Know your options. If you have an older home that's not pre-wired for home security, you may want to choose an easy-to-install wireless surveillance system. If you're tech-savvy, you may want web-based home surveillance so you can monitor your home on the Internet 24 hours a day from any computer.

    • Think prevention. Walk around your home and get into a criminal mindset. Where would an intruder be likely to break in? Are there particular areas – like the swimming pool or the garage – that you'd like to keep an eye on?

Once you have a better idea of your surveillance needs, you will be ready to install your own home surveillance system. Many surveillance systems are sold in convenient, prepackaged kits – a good option for beginners because everything's included and components are designed to work together.

If you're more experienced with home surveillance or have more specific needs (maybe you want a nanny-cam to check up on the new babysitter), specialty cameras and surveillance equipment can be purchased separately.

It seems like violent crime is everywhere these days. From the local nightly news to the front page of the morning paper, we are constantly reminded that we live in a dangerous and unpredictable world. Crime statistics confirm these reports – according to the FBI, there were a reported 1,390,695 violent crimes in 2005.

Today, it's more important than ever to be able to defend yourself if it becomes necessary. But what exactly does "self-defense" mean? Is it about being bigger and tougher than a potential attacker? Does it mean carrying a gun in your purse?

Not all of us are capable of fighting back physically, and sometimes fighting can make your situation more dangerous. Plus the laws concerning self-defense can be tricky – lethal self-defense is not always the solution from a legal point of view, no matter how frightened you may be in a situation.

    Your Best Defense

The key to self-defense is preparation. You don't have to be paranoid, and you don't have to carry a gun. The best way to defend yourself is to be aware of your surroundings and to know what to do if you feel threatened or unsafe. Here are some things you can do to avoid being a victim:

    • Be aware of your surroundings. Always pay attention and observe what's going on around you. Criminals often choose victims who appear to be preoccupied or distracted.

    • Avoid isolated places. Whether you're finding a parking spot at the mall or going out for an evening stroll, make a point to be around other people. You're significantly less likely to be attacked if you are in a well-lit, high-traffic area.

    • Trust your instincts. Don't worry about seeming paranoid. If a person or situation doesn't seem right to you, get away immediately and tell someone.

You're far less likely to become a victim of a violent crime if you're alert and aware. Unfortunately, there's no 100% guarantee. For a little extra peace of mind, you may want to consider some additional non-lethal self-defense options:

    • Pepper spray: A small but powerful deterrent. It causes temporary blindness, difficulty breathing, and an intense burning sensation. Spraying an attacker with pepper spray gives you extra time to get away and get help.

    • Stun guns: Stun guns are available in a variety of sizes and deliver a powerful jolt of electricity that temporarily disables an attacker for several minutes.

    • Personal alarms: A personal alarm or panic sensor can be worn around the neck and pressed if you're in a dangerous situation. The noise can startle and scare away an attacker – and it draws attention to you.

By staying alert and using non-lethal self-defense products, you are minimizing your risk of becoming a victim. You don't have to live in fear. A little preparation can help you feel empowered in an unpredictable world.

Connoisseurs of spicy food know all about the cayenne pepper. The little red pepper packs a fiery punch and adds four-alarm zip to everything from stir-fry to Creole sauce – and it can save your life.

A Modern Twist on an Ancient Technique

Cayenne pepper, also known scientifically as oleoresin capsicum (OR), is the main ingredient in most commercially available pepper sprays. Cayenne has been used for thousands of years as a method of self-defense. Armies in ancient China wrapped ground, dried cayenne pepper in rice paper and threw it at the faces of their opponents to stun them. Around the same time, the Japanese invented a little box used to blow cayenne into the face of an enemy.

Today's pepper spray was originally developed in the 1960s as an animal repellent. It was a big hit among mail carriers who had to contend with unfriendly neighborhood dogs. Portable and easy to use, it has become one of the most popular forms of personal self-defense.

    Spicing up Self Defense

If you've ever felt the burn of spicy food on your tongue, you can probably imagine why pepper spray is so effective. Pepper spray is far more concentrated than your typical spicy dish, and when aimed at the eyes and face of an attacker it produces a number of unpleasant effects:

    • Difficulty breathing

    • Intense eye irritation

    • Temporary blindness or inability to open the eyes

    • A painful burning sensation on the skin

    • Coughing and runny nose

These effects are temporary – some last about 30-45 minutes. But the skilled use of pepper spray can buy you enough time to get out of a dangerous situation and call for help. Pepper spray is an effective, non-lethal way to protect yourself from a would-be attacker.

Pepper sprays are available in a variety of forms, including many that are small enough to fit inside a handbag or pocket. Whether you choose a large spray canister or a lipstick-sized spray that fits on a key ring, it's important that you use pepper spray responsibly and follow some basic guidelines:

    • Check with your state laws regarding pepper spray. Some states only allow certain sizes and concentrations, and some states prohibit Internet sales of pepper spray – know the rules before you make a purchase.

    • Keep your pepper spray in the same place at all times. You should be able to access your pepper spray as soon as you need it – in a dangerous situation, you don't have time to dig through your purse to find it.

    • Test your pepper spray periodically. It's a good idea to (carefully) test out your pepper spray to make sure it still works. It's also good practice so you know how to use it if you need to.

    • Keep pepper spray out of the reach of children. Although it's not lethal, pepper spray can be painful. Don't leave it where your kids can play with it.

Is your teenager safe? The teenage years are those first baby steps into adulthood that challenge young people to choose right from wrong, wise from unwise, safe from dangerous. If you have children of middle school or high school age, young adult safety is likely a major issue in your household. Here are a few tips to help protect and educate your children.

Young Adult Safety: On the Internet

Millions of teenagers drop their backpacks by the door and head straight for the computer when they get home from school, IMing with friends or hanging out on social networking sites like http://Myspace.com and http://Facebook.com. But, as in real life, there are predators in the virtual world of the Internet. When it comes to the safety of your teenager, Internet protocol should be one of the first issues you address. The perception of the Internet as being "safe" and "anonymous" make it all the more dangerous to innocent, impressionable teenagers.

Set some young adult safety ground rules:

    1) Put a parental blocker on your web browser so you can control what sites they are allowed to visit.

    2) Monitor your child's emails and IM conversations. Don't outright spy, but glance over their shoulder now and then. If you see something you don't like, address it there and then.

    3) Educate your teenagers about the importance of Internet safety. Teach them not to give out their name, number, address, or any identifying information to strangers. Predators stalk teenage Internet hangouts like Myspace all the time.

    4) Myspace and other social networking sites have safety controls in place to help protect your child, but you and your child have to work together as well.

    5) With the right information, a teenager can enjoy all the good the Internet has to offer without falling victim to a predator.

    Young Adult Safety: Home Alone

When is your child old enough to stay home alone? The answer depends on the emotional maturity and responsibility of the individual child, but usually by age 13 they are ready to spend a few hours home alone. Here are some young adult safety guidelines for your child:

    1) Never admit you are home alone when answering the phone. Say that Mom or Dad "can't come to the phone right now."

    2) Do not open the door for anyone you don't know. Never.

    3) If someone knocks at the door, do not indicate that you are home alone. Pretend to talk to someone if you want to: "Hey Mom! There's someone at the door! What? Ok, I'll tell them to come back later!"

    4) Do not use cooking devices you are not familiar with when you are home alone. They are a fire hazard.

    5) Do not swim when you are home alone.

    6) Do not be afraid to call the police if you feel threatened by someone lurking outside your home, even if they look harmless. You have legitimate fears and are allowed to act on them.

Teenagers are on the verge of adulthood, and you are helping them make that journey. Granting them new privileges (with limits) helps them take those first steps towards independence with confidence and wisdom.

Maintaining young adult safety is hard work, but it prepares your children for the even greater dangers that exist in the adult world. Begin teaching them how to make wise choices early on, and you will wind up raising responsible, well-adjusted young adults.
