A surgical spinal stenosis procedure is generally recommended for a small percentage of patients who are diagnosed with the condition. Fortunately, most patients are able to receive the relief they require from conservative, nonsurgical treatments. Before you seriously consider undergoing a surgical procedure (and before we discuss spinal stenosis surgery in this article), you should first learn about some of the nonsurgical treatments that very well could be effective at relieving your pain and discomfort.
Medication
Some spinal stenosis symptoms can become less severe when combated with an over-the-counter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen. These medications interfere with the body's inflammatory response and, in turn, can alleviate swelling and tenderness. Patients with certain gastrointestinal or cardiovascular conditions, as well as those with some drug allergies, may be advised to forego NSAIDs and utilize acetaminophen instead. Over-the-counter medications occasionally prove ineffective; if you are among those whose symptoms don't respond to these medications, your physician may prescribe a narcotic pain reliever and/or muscle relaxant.
Heat/Ice Therapy
Another generally effective nonsurgical treatment for spinal stenosis involves the application of heat and ice. Some patients may be advised to alternate between the two while others may be directed to exclusively use one or the other. Be sure to ask your physician which course of action is best for you.
Heat therapy, or thermotherapy, helps relieve muscle tension and increase the flow of nutrient-rich blood to the area where heat is applied. This can reduce the pressure placed on the affected spinal nerve or nerve root and may aid in the body's healing process. Ice therapy (cryotherapy), on the other hand, can help numb away pain and reduce inflammation. As with a decrease in muscle tension, a reduction in inflammation can help relieve the pressure placed on a spinal nerve or nerve root.
Lifestyle Modifications
In many cases, simply reversing certain unhealthy habits can help patients avoid a surgical spinal stenosis procedure. For instance, individuals who are overweight can significantly reduce the strain that is placed on the neck or back by shedding excess pounds. Likewise, those who lead sedentary lifestyles (even if not necessarily overweight) can reduce nerve compression by becoming physically active and strengthening the spine's supporting muscles in the neck, back, and abdomen. Patients who use tobacco products or abuse alcohol can also benefit from eliminating or reducing these unhealthy habits.
When to Consider Surgery & What to Think About
There are myriad other nonsurgical treatments that your physician or spine specialist can recommend. So, just because your pain and discomfort isn't alleviated by the three treatments mentioned above, it doesn't automatically mean that you're a candidate for a surgical spinal stenosis procedure. If your physician does recommend an operation, then you may want to ask if you're a candidate for a minimally invasive procedure as an alternative to open neck or back surgery.
A minimally invasive (endoscopic) procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that it doesn't require an overnight hospital stay. Whereas open neck or back surgery is performed through a large incision that dissects musculature, a minimally invasive procedure is executed through a very small incision (typically less than one inch long) and the muscles are gently pushed to the side. An endoscopic procedure doesn't necessitate the fusion of any vertebrae and typically requires a significantly less arduous rehabilitation than open neck or back surgery.
Even though there are many advantages to undergoing a minimally invasive procedure in lieu of a surgical spinal stenosis procedure, you should still ask your physician if there are any risks you should consider. You may also want to receive a second or third opinion before you consent to any surgical treatment.

When it comes to treatment for a herniated disc, only your physician or spine specialist can recommend a regimen that speaks to your unique level of health and the severity of your spinal condition. As a general rule, patients who are diagnosed with herniated discs will initially follow conservative (nonsurgical) treatment plans. If conservative treatments fail to provide adequate relief after several weeks or months, then patients may be advised to consider surgical treatment.
Nonsurgical Treatments
Your doctor may recommend one of several conservative treatments, or may assign a regimen consisting of multiple techniques. Some of the most common nonsurgical treatments for a herniated disc include:
Medication – Many patients benefit from taking over-the-counter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen. These medications block the body's production of the COX-1 and/or COX-2 enzymes that are partially responsible for triggering the body's inflammatory response. Acetaminophen or other over-the-counter analgesics may be recommended as an alternative to NSAIDs for patients who suffer from cardiovascular or gastrointestinal conditions, and for individuals who have an allergy to the ingredients found in NSAIDs. If a patient's pain is severe or doesn't subside with the use of over-the-counter medications, then his or her physician may prescribe a narcotic pain reliever and/or a muscle relaxant.
Heat/ice therapy – Applying ice to the affected area can help to numb localized pain and could also help reduce inflammation. Heat, on the other hand, can increase blood flow to the affected area and aid in the healing process. A heating pad or warm compress can also relieve muscle tension, which oftentimes contributes to a patient's neck or back pain.
Lifestyle modifications – Sometimes, one of the most effective treatments involves the reversal of certain unhealthy behaviors. It's very common for overweight patients to experience neck and back problems, and many of these patients' conditions improve once they've shed excess pounds. Individuals who lead sedentary lifestyles (even if they aren't overweight) can greatly benefit from becoming more physically active. Gradually increasing the strength of the muscles in the neck, back, and abdomen can provide the spine with additional support and may help to relieve the pressure being placed on the affected intervertebral disc. Patients who abuse alcohol or use tobacco products may also be advised to change these habits to not only improve spinal health, but overall health as well.
Surgical Treatment for a Herniated Disc
The majority of patients who are diagnosed with a herniated disc will find the relief they require from a conservative treatment regimen. Those who do not, however, may need to consider undergoing surgery. Open neck or back surgeries are highly invasive and can require lengthy and challenging recoveries. The affected disc is often removed in its entirety and the adjacent vertebrae are then fused together to stabilize the spine. Some patients may be candidates for minimally invasive procedures as an alternative to open neck or back surgeries. These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and may not require the complete removal of any discs, or the fusion of any vertebrae. Instead, only the portion of the herniated disc that is pressing against the spinal cord, spinal nerve, or spinal nerve root is removed. After undergoing a minimally invasive spinal procedure, many patients are able to return to their daily activities within a matter of weeks.
If your doctor or spine specialist advises you to consider surgical treatment, ask him or her if you're a candidate for a minimally invasive procedure. Before consenting to any type of operation, you may want to receive a second – or even third – opinion to make sure no other conservative treatments are available.

Receiving a spondylosis diagnosis essentially means that your physician or spine specialist has identified degeneration in your spine. While this can sound disconcerting, it's actually completely normal. So much so, in fact, that it's considered part of the natural aging process.
If you've been diagnosed with spondylosis and want to learn more about the condition and your treatment options, you're probably best served to speak with your physician or spine specialist. That said, there is some general information with which you may want to familiarize yourself. We'll discuss some of these tidbits in this article, but be sure to keep in mind that you should never utilize any of the treatments mentioned below (or found anywhere else on the internet, for that matter), without consulting your physician first.
Understanding the Condition
Spondylosis occurs as a result of the wear and tear we place on our necks and backs over the years. Just think for a moment about what the spine must endure: It facilitates every bend and twist that we rely on for regular movement and is responsible for supporting a large amount of our body weight. These tasks can take their toll on the spine, causing many spinal components to gradually break down. Among those affected are:
The facet joints, which are the joints that connect adjacent, articulating vertebrae. Like the other joints in our bodies, the facets are lined with collagen that provides lubrication and allows for smooth articulation. Over time, the joints' cartilaginous lining can wear away, causing the bones to painfully grind against one another. The body may try to mitigate this bone-on-bone contact by forming an osteophyte (bone spur) to stabilize the joint. Unfortunately, this can do more harm than good since bone spurs can invade the spinal canal and impinge upon the spinal cord, spinal nerve, or spinal nerve root.
The intervertebral discs, which are tasked with cushioning our vertebrae and absorbing the impact that's placed on the spine as we move our necks and backs. These pad-like structures are comprised of a tough outer shell (the annulus fibrosus) and a gelatinous center (the nucleus pulposus). As we age, our discs' annuli fibrosi can become dry and brittle, making them prone to cracking and tearing. This usually coincides with the dehydration of our discs' nuclei pulposi, which can make the intervertebral discs less adept at absorbing impact. These degenerative changes can lead to a herniated disc, which occurs when the nucleus escapes through a crack in the annulus and invades the spinal canal. The changes can also lead to a bulging disc, which occurs when the nucleus shifts out of place because the annulus has weakened to the point that it can no longer maintain the disc's proper shape.
Treatment Options
If you've received a spondylosis diagnosis, your physician will likely recommend a regimen of conservative, nonsurgical treatments. This can include over-the-counter medications like naproxen, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen; or prescription drugs such as narcotic pain relievers or muscle relaxants. Your physician may also recommend physical therapy to strengthen and gently stretch the muscles and other supporting tissues in the neck, back, and abdomen. One of the most effective treatments entails lifestyle modifications, such as losing weight (only if you have excess pounds to shed), becoming more physically active, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption.
A minority of patients who receive a spondylosis diagnosis will be advised to consider surgical treatment. This course of action is typically reserved for those who have found little to no relief after utilizing conservative treatments for several weeks or months. If your physician recommends surgery, you may want to receive a second or even third opinion to make sure surgical treatment truly is your best chance for finding relief from the pain and discomfort associated with spondylosis.

Travel on a Budget: Tory Reiss Style (aka like a nerd)
Spending my first winter in Minnesota, I quickly learned that a winter escape is a must. Yet between paying rent, paying down my student loans, and trying to save a little bit for the future, finding enough funds for a "real" vacation becomes a real challenge. With room and board, transportation, activities, gear, and so on, vacation expenses can add up quickly, so I'll show you how to travel on a budget, Tory Reiss Style (aka like a nerd). This is the first in a series of articles I'll publish on my organic tech blog, Adventures in Tech, on travel/life/fun hacking.
First thing's first, you'll need a place to stay. For my vacation (aka Tory Reiss runs away from Ice Age 8: Minnesotan Tundra to the Florida Keys), I glamped in everything from an 18' sailboat to a 26' catamaran to the guesthouse of an awesome couple in Key West each for far less than half the price of a hotel room. I did this using Airbnb (alternatively, Wimdu) websites that allow you to book nightly stays in other people's properties. Not only are the prices a lot cheaper than a hotel/motel, but they're often much more unique and you get to meet some awesome locals in the process!
The next matter of business is finding a ride, which can be a real bummer if you're going somewhere without a solid public transportation system or if you're under the age of 25 since rental car companies think us young'uns are reckless (Tory Reiss and Adventures in Tech think it's just plain scammy). Luckily, there are websites that allow you to rent other people's cars while they're not in use (like http://www.getaround.com or http://relayrides.com) or find a rideshare to whatever destination you're traveling to (like Zimride, and Ridejoy). I used RelayRides to rent a Miami local's 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid for a week and it only cost $175! Not only did I save about $200 versus a typical car rental agency but it only took a single tank of gas to travel the 600 miles we covered. Once in Key West, we were able to use http://www.spinlister.com to find bikes to rent for far less than the market average.
The final obstacle to the budget conscious trip of your dreams is gear. Equipment. Supplies. Junk. Whatever you want to call it, your wallet still ain't happy. Adventures in Tech (and Tory Reiss for that matter) are huge supporters of the outdoors, which means peeling yourself away from any and all screens to enjoy nature once in a while. Whether you're going camping, and need a tent, or kayaking, and could use a kayak, most young folks like myself lack the storage space, money, and/or good sense to own many such supplies. These final three sites, http://snapgoods.com, http://neighborgoods.net, and http://www.rentoid.com allow you to rent other people's possessions. Anything from tools for a move into a new apartment, to a raft for a day out on the lake. All it takes is a few clicks, a couple dollars, and you're off to the races with some new toys.
There you have it. I promised you I'd show you how to travel on a budget, the Tory Reiss Style (aka like a nerd), and I hope this fit the bill. This isn't in any way an exhaustive list, but it's meant to be a way to get started. Please feel free to drop me a line via email thetoryreiss@gmail.com with any questions and check out my new organic tech blog Adventures in Tech at http://thetoryreiss.com/.

Flat tires and blowouts can happen at anytime to any driver. Knowing how to prevent some of the most common causes for flat tires and tire damage can extend the life of your tires and help prevent unsafe situations for you and your loved ones. There are many causes for flat tires: poor inflation, tread wear, damage, punctures, debris and other road hazards, or using the wrong tires. Being aware of what may cause a flat may save you time and money, and the cost of tire repairs or replacements. In the event that you do encounter a flat tire or a blowout, always be prepared with a spare tire, jack, and tire changing tools in your vehicle.
Improperly inflated tires are one of the top causes for tire damage and flats. Tires are rated at what their ideal inflation is on the sidewall of the tire. Standard tire inflation is 27 to 32 psi and you can check this by carrying a portable tire gauge. Seasonal temperature fluctuations will cause tires to lose tire pressure, about 1 psi for every drop of 10 degrees. Unseen punctures, leaks, or damage to the air nozzle can also cause a loss in air pressure. When tires are over-inflated or under-inflated they become more prone to uneven tread wear and damage. Under-inflated tires can blowout when heat builds up inside, and over-inflated tires may crack, split, or blowout.
Tread wear can cause tires to be more susceptible to flat tires. Uneven tread wear is not only caused by improper inflation, but can also form due to poor alignment, improper wheel balance, and driving habits. Check your tread periodically to make sure that tires are wearing evenly, and that your tread level remains in the safe range so that tires are not 'bald'. To check your tread you could use a tread depth gauge that measures to the millimeter. The 'Lincoln Penny Test' is also a handy way to keep an eye on tread without tools. Simply place a US penny in the tire treads. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, then your tread is too worn down to remain safe.
Tire Damage can cause immediate flat tires, or internal damage that could weaken the tire over time until the tire suddenly goes flat or worse yet, blows out. Tire damage can be caused driving habits such as taking turns too fast or using the wrong type of tires for the driving conditions. Other common causes of tire damage include striking curbs, speed bumps, driveways, railroad tracks or other uneven and hard surfaces at fast speeds. Make sure you cross these surfaces at a slow, steady speed, and evenly. To prevent hitting curbs make sure you allow enough space to safely turn around them to avoid striking the tire on the side or going over them.
The leading cause of flat tires is punctures from debris or other road hazards. Always be prepared and aware of your surroundings. Pay close attention to the road condition as these problems cannot always be seen until it is too late. Watch out for fallen tree branches, rocks, or road construction debris. Branches and nails can cause a puncture that may pop the tire, or a slow leak that will flatten it over the course of several hours. Should you ever puncture your tire, leave the offending object in and if possible, drive carefully to your mechanic for immediate repair.
Seasonal changes bring about new threats of road hazards. In the spring extra precaution should be taken to avoid potholes. Ice in the winter creates cracks and damages the road surface, but in the spring the wet weather can cause these cracks to form into potholes, expanding and breaking away until they become dangerous road hazards. Never drive too fast on a road with even small potholes, and never try to swerve at high speeds to avoid a pothole as this can become even more dangerous. Potholes can cause internal damage to the tire, or even an immediate flat if the tire strikes it hard enough. If you ever hit a pothole, have your alignment and wheel balance inspected to prevent any further problems with the tire and assess the damage.
Avoiding flat tires is not a perfect science. Flat tires can occur even when practicing preventative measures. Being aware of how to prevent some of the most common causes of flat tires can save many inconvenient situations, time and money. The importance of maintaining proper tire pressure cannot be overstated. Tires at the correct pressure will last longer and perform better than tires that are not maintained. Under-inflating or over-inflating tires can cause problems with safety, uneven tread wear, flat tires or blowouts, or even gas mileage. Our service providers recommend investing in a portable tire gauge and keeping it in the glove compartment for easy access, and checking tires regularly.
Tire pressure varies depending on the vehicle and tire. For most cars, vans, SUVs, and smaller passenger trucks, you will want to maintain a PSI (pounds per square inch) of about 27 to 40. Larger vehicles will have larger tires and may be rated up to 45psi. The exact rating for your tires is on the sidewall. When purchasing new tires you should take note of the rating for the life of the tire. Inflating the tires to their proper rating will keep the tires functioning at peak performance, it will maintain their lifespan, increase your safety, and should maintain the correct level of fuel efficiency.
Under-inflated tires are a common problem in how fast tires will wear out. Watch for signs that your tires may be under-inflated. The tread will wear down on both sides equally, but the tread in the middle of the tire will not seem affected. This is an indication that there is too much contact on the road with the outside of the tire. Make sure you check your tire pressure regularly as consistent under-inflation and low tire pressure can be a sign that you have a slow leak in your tire that needs to be repaired. Be aware that when the temperature drops outside, your tires will also lose pressure, about 1psi for every 10 degrees drop. Under-inflated tires are more prone to damage, flats, and even blowouts. As the tire heats up driving, if there is not enough air inside to displace the heat, tires can become fatigued and fail.
Over-inflated tires are not as common, but can cause an equal amount of damage to the tire. Too much wear noticed in the center of the tire shows that the air pressure is consistently too high. Only the center of the tire is hitting the road, and this will wear the tread out much faster than normal. Improperly inflating tires or not using a gauge is a common mistake, which can have a high impact on your tires. Over-inflated tires can cause internal damage to the tire or become more prone to flats as well, as the typical hard surface of the tread has been compromised.
Other handy tips to remember: Always make sure that you check your tire pressure on cold tires. This doesn't necessarily mean in cold weather, just not after you have been driving on them. Heat will change tire pressure, so the most accurate reading is done when your car is parked and hasn't been driven immediately before. Make sure you use a reliable gauge as well, don't only rely on the gauges at the gas station air pump, as they may not be checked regularly.
We're always here to answer all of your tire pressure questions, and our highly trained technicians can address any concern you may have about uneven tire wear, or how to maintain the best performance on your tires. Keep your tires properly inflated for your optimal performance, life, and fuel efficiency!

The smash 1990 hit "Goodfellas" gave audiences a glimpse into the day-to-day lives of three New York mobsters who were attempting to further their careers and cement their places in the Mafia during the 1960s and 1970s. With Martin Scorsese as director and a strong, star-studded cast, the film went on to win an Oscar as well as forty other awards and twenty-three nominations.
Although there are many players in the story, the film revolves around three main characters. Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) was a local boy who had dreamed of becoming a member of the Mafia's Lucchese family since he was young, despite his mixed Irish-Italian heritage. Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) plays a violent and intimidating character who was pretty much born into the Mob and who ultimately becomes Henry's best friend. Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro) is a smooth-talking jack-of-all-trades who teams up with Henry and Tommy to further his criminal career.
The decision to cast Ray Liotta in the lead role may have come as a surprise to many because he was a relative newcomer to the Hollywood scene. Liotta had just broken into acting in 1980, and most of his experience came from a recurring role on a soap opera, "Another World," and the television series "Casablanca" and "Our Family Honor." Fortunately, director Martin Scorsese had seen Liotta's portrayal of a psychopathic ex-con in the 1986 hit "Something Wild," and he knew Liotta was destined to play Henry Hill. Producer Irwin Winkler didn't agree, stating that whoever landed the role of Henry needed to be able to portray more charm. Liotta finally won the role eight months later by approaching Winkler in a restaurant and convincing him that he was the right man for the role. Liotta wanted to play Henry Hill so badly that he turned down the role of DA Harvey Dent in "Batman."
Although he wasn't nominated for any awards for his portrayal of Henry Hill, Liotta gave a convincing performance that was well received by audiences. He went on to star in films such as "Unlawful Entry," "Corrina, Corrina," "Operation Dumbo Drop," and "Unforgettable."
Robert De Niro was ultimately cast in the role of James Conway, but he wasn't Winkler's or Scorsese's first choice. Al Pacino had been offered the part, but he turned it down for fear of being typecast. He quickly regretted the decision and wound up playing the role of gangster Big Boy Caprice in "Dick Tracy" later that same year.
De Niro turned out to be perfect for the role, which ultimately won him several award nominations and a New York Film Critics Circle award for Best Actor. With an acting career dating back to 1965, De Niro had already proved his acting chops and his ability to play convincing gangster roles. He had already won critical acclaim for his role as Vito Corleone in the 1974 smash hit "The Godfather: Part II" and Al Capone in the 1987 film "The Untouchables."
Robert De Niro has a knack for playing complicated characters, and he has proven this in a series of roles, including Michael in "The Deer Hunter," Jake LaMotta in "Raging Bull," and Noodles Aaronson in "Once Upon a Time in America." After "Goodfellas" wrapped, De Niro continued to wow audiences with roles in hit movies such as "Cape Fear," "Casino," "Meet the Fockers," and "Analyze That."
Joe Pesci's acting career is almost as long as De Niro's, and he was a no-brainer choice to play the role of Tommy DeVito. In fact, he played the part so well that he was the only cast member to go home with an Oscar, which he won for Best Supporting Actor. The real-life gangster that Pesci's character was based on, Thomas DeSimone, said that the actor's portrayal would have been perfect had he just been bigger in stature.
Pesci and De Niro were certainly not strangers when they embarked on this film. The pair had appeared in "Raging Bull" and "Once Upon a Time in America" together. Pesci has a long string of hit movies under his belt, but he is very well known for his roles in "My Cousin Vinny," the "Lethal Weapon" and "Home Alone" franchises, and "A Bronx Tale."
Lorraine Bracco played the part of Karen Hill, Henry's practical Jewish wife. Like De Niro and Pesci, Bracco also had an established acting career before filming began. She is best known for her role in "Goodfellas," which won her Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. In 1999, she took on another gangster-related role in the hit television series "The Sopranos," which won her a Screen Actors Guild award as well as several additional awards and nominations.
The "Goodfellas" cast is rounded out by Paul Sorvino in the role of Paul Cicero, Frank Sivero as Frankie Carbone, Tony Darrow as Sonny Bunz, Mike Starr as Frenchy, and Frank Vincent as Billy Batts.

Rating: Approved
Length: 108 minutes
Release Date: June 24, 1954
Directed by: Elia Kazan
Genre: Crime/Drama
Stars: 4 out of 5
Marlon Brando gives the performance of his career in "On the Waterfront" as Terry Malloy, a failed boxer who now does errands for a corrupt union boss named Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb). He spends his days and nights doing exactly as he is told by Johnny and his brother Charley (Rod Steiger), both of whom convinced him to lose the high-profile boxing match that effectively ended his career. He trusts them, even though they have never had his best interests at heart, so he continues to run menial errands for them, barely scraping by and leading a largely lonely existence.
One day, he unwittingly lures a man to what would be his eventual death at the behest of Johnny and Charley. When he finds out that he was duped into doing something so sinister, he finally begins to see just how toxic and dangerous his brother and boss are. Unfortunately, the realization comes at a time when Johnny and the union are being investigated for corruption. Terry is questioned by the cops but steadfastly refuses to say anything for fear that Johnny will order his goons to kill him. It is around this time that he meets Edie Doyle (Eve Marie Saint), the sister of the man whom Terry unwittingly helped murder.
His guilt increases as he begins to fall in love with Edie, which forces him to make some big decisions about his life. He doesn't want to confess his accidental role in her brother's murder for fear of losing her, and he's afraid she would likely tell the police. This would lead to his having to testify against the union, if he isn't murdered before the trial begins. He is also scared to do so because his testimony would lead to his brother's incarceration. He begins to question everything he once knew, including his love and loyalty to Charley. He is an emotional mess and a psychological time bomb of sorts, but he finally has a goal in life after years of drifting and aimlessness. In putting his life into so much danger with his decisions, Terry has never looked so alive.
"On the Waterfront" is loosely based on a true story of real waterfront corruption that journalist Malcolm Johnson wrote about in 1949 in an epic twenty-four-part series in the "New York Sun." He won a Pulitzer for his work, while screenwriter Bud Schulberg won the Oscar that year for the script, which many critics deemed as the most perfect screenplay ever written outside of the ending. Due to expectations in filmmaking in the era, the ending for "On the Waterfront" had to be changed from the grittier real-life ending in Johnson's series to a decidedly more triumphant ending for the film. A more realistic or unhappy ending simply would not have been acceptable in 1954. Had the film been made a decade or two later, it likely would have had a much different result.
The small controversy over the changed ending was actually not a big deal in comparison to the much larger issue over one particular scene. The scene in question has Malloy giving an impassioned speech in front of a government committee about why he tattled on his friends in order to assuage his conscience. It hearkens back to just a few years earlier, when Kazan handed over names of colleagues he thought had ties to the Communist party when McCarthyism was at its peak. In doing so, he destroyed several lives and careers, while he was allowed to carry one with his own career unsullied. This didn't go down well with some in Hollywood, so the scene in "On the Waterfront" was seen as Kazan's way of explaining why he did what he did. No matter whether viewers support or got offended by Kazan's actions, the scene does not take away from the greatness of the film one bit.
The fact that the film is seen as controversial actually adds a bit of mystique to what is already a fabled film. Add the nearly flawless screenplay, Brando's best acting ever, and a series of supporting performances for the ages, and the result is one of the best movies of all time. Even half a century after its initial release, "On the Waterfront" still stands as a powerful, moving film that might have been one of the earliest films to have a true catchphrase: "I coulda been a contender." The film was a definite contender, walking away with eight Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Brando, Best Picture, and Best Director for Kazan.

Article Title: Why "The Departed" Is One of the Best Gangster Films of All Time

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
"The Departed" is a 2006 film about the Irish mafia in Boston. With an all-star cast directed by film legend Martin Scorsese and written by William Monahan, "The Departed" is a modern movie that has earned its place as a classic gangster film on par with "The Godfather."
Stellar acting by a standout cast of performers, each of whom can and does stand alone as a leading actor, is what really earns "The Departed" its place in the gangster film hall of fame. Leonardo DiCaprio delivers one of the signature roles of his career as Billy Costigan, a young police academy reject turned mafia mole. Costigan's relationship with Jack Nicholson's character, mob boss Frank Costello, provides the riveting central conflict of the film. While Nicholson and DiCaprio are the film's main characters, the supporting roles are equally responsible for the film's gritty atmosphere and moving storyline. Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, and Martin Sheen all deliver memorable performances as the film's supporting cast.
Matt Damon plays Staff Sergeant Colin Sullivan of the Boston Police Department. Nicholson's and Damon's characters were generally based off Whitey Bulger, an ingenious mafia leader who infiltrated high levels of the FBI, and his corrupt protégé, John Connolly. The interaction between these Sullivan, Costigan, and Costello creates a game of cat and mouse that is emotionally gripping and deeply disturbing at the same time.
While "The Departed" is famous for its intensely graphic and accurate portrayal of the Irish mafia in Boston, the film also boasts plenty of perfectly timed dark humor to balance things out. The fast-paced exchanges between Baldwin's and Sheen's characters, complete with thick Bostonian accents, save the audience when the film descends just a bit too far into the dark world it portrays.
"The Departed" is the first gangster film since "The Godfather" to develop its characters so deeply yet dispatch them so savagely. Scorsese makes sure that you fall in love with the characters and understand the complexity of the reasons behind why they do the things they do, and then he makes sure they get shot down in true gangster movie fashion. The fact that there are no real villains makes the violence seem even more brutal. Even Nicholson's devilish portrayal of Frank Costello is so relatable and nuanced that the audience can't help but to love him as much as they hate him.
Another reason "The Departed" deserves a star on the gangster film walk of fame is the cinematography. The Boston streets come alive with Scorsese's camera work. Innovative angles and shots make each scene as engaging, and often as disturbing, as possible. It's impossible not to get sucked into the world of this gritty film, and in spite of its length, the movie is over before you know it. Fans of the film are still talking about "the elevator scene" even seven years later. Special effects are kept to a minimum in "The Departed," even during prolonged gunfights, which is part of what makes this movie so believable.
"The Departed" is an instant gangster film success on grounds of character development and cinematography alone, but no truly classic gangster film would be complete without a heavy atmosphere and great fight scenes. "The Departed" delivers generously on both counts. The life of an Irish Mafioso is a violent one, and Scorsese portrays this accurately in the constant fist fights and shootouts throughout the film. These scenes are even more intense because the characters on both sides of the law are so fully developed. When you add in double agents and even more double-crossing, "The Departed" qualifies as one of the most suspenseful gangster films of all time.
"The Departed" doesn't lack romance either. Like any great gangster film, "The Departed" has its own tense love triangle between Costigan, the green and temperamental FBI informant; Dr. Madolyn Madden, his understanding court-appointed therapist; and Staff Sergeant Colin Sullivan, Costello's right-hand man. The love story between Costigan and Dr. Madden is tender but is not without its rough patches. Fortunately, their love interest adds to the tension of the film and doesn't detract from the story, as is the case in so many modern films.
"The Departed" has all the basic elements of a classic gangster film and then some. Suspense, drama, violence, great camera work, and a bit of romance all converge to create one of the most gripping and intense gangster films of all time. "The Departed" is truly a must-see for any hardcore film fan, especially those who love the gangster movie genre.

Rating: R
Length: 91 minutes
Release Date: Apr. 5, 2013
Directed by: Fede Alvarez
Genre: Horror
Stars: 4 out of 5
There are some movies that people think can't be touched. At one point, the original "Evil Dead" might have been considered one of them. When a remake was announced, many people were skeptical, but in the end, the new film really came through to provide a great moviegoing experience for both fans of the original and fans of the horror genre in general.
This version of "Evil Dead" opens with a backwoods family preparing to burn a young girl alive while reading from an ancient book. At first, it seems like the sort of human sacrifice that you'd expect to bring some new evil into the world, but it quickly becomes clear that the girl is possessed, and they're actually trying to banish the demon. The family sets the girl on fire and shoots her in the head, at which point the story jumps to the present day.
From there, the film follows the familiar story of the first "Evil Dead" with a few changes. A group of friends meet in an empty cabin in the middle of the woods, though this time they aren't there to party; the group has come together to help Mia (played by Jane Levy) to detox off an opiate addiction. Upon arriving they find that the cabin has been broken into, and during a brief inspection, Mia's friend Eric (played by Lou Taylor Pucci) finds the book known as the "Naturom Demonto" hidden in the cellar.
Reading from the book, Eric manages to awaken the demons that had possessed the girl in the beginning of the movie. Mia begins hallucinating and tries to escape; unfortunately she manages to wreck her car and is attacked by the demons. She makes her way back to the cabin only to begin attacking her friends. The friends try to subdue her but wind up becoming possessed themselves one by one as the demon tries to claim the five souls it needs to enter our world.
The film has a much stronger horror vibe than most people associate with the "Evil Dead" franchise these days, especially after the amount of comedy that was included in "Army of Darkness." Much of the film is very dark with blood and gore to spare. Despite this, the movie doesn't rely solely on blood and guts to make it scary and is very well written for a horror remake. While it would have been easy for the director to have either followed the comedic trend of the previous film or cash in on the name with buckets of blood, it's obvious that a lot of care went into making the movie as genuinely scary as possible.
Don't think that the focus on straight horror makes "Evil Dead" a weaker film than the original movies, though. Between the demonic possessions and bloody mutilations, there's actually a plot to the film that's probably a bit deeper than any of the previous movies in the franchise. The characters' actions make sense, there's a reason for them all to be there, and the way that they overcome the demons in the end shows that some serious thought was put into making the movie smart and believable despite the amount of blood that shows up on the screen.
One thing that's very interesting about "Evil Dead" is that it is actually only a partial remake of the original film; while there was speculation and rumors early on that Bruce Campbell's character Ash from the original was being reimagined as a girl named Ashley, the final film didn't actually take that direction. The producers, who include both original director Sam Raimi and original star Bruce Campbell, hope to eventually create a film that incorporates both Ash and Mia into a single continuity. That film would theoretically be made after a sequel to this movie as well as a sequel to "Army of Darkness," and, if it comes to pass, will result in this film being not only a remake of the original but also a continuation of the existing franchise.
In the end, if you're looking for a solid horror movie then "Evil Dead" is a must-see. It isn't perfect, but it's a better horror film than a lot of the horror movies being released today. Just don't go into the movie expecting a campy movie like you'd get with "Army of Darkness" or the original "Evil Dead II" because that's not what this remake is offering; while there are definite references to the original films, this one takes itself very seriously and will do its best to scare you out of your seat.

Female infertility can be a very frustrating time for a woman. However, there is hope and ways to deal with infertility. Hopefully this article will help you find better ways to cope with infertility and find help for you.
It was thought years ago that if a couple were unable to conceive that it was the woman's fault. This is not the case. It has been found that the causes of infertility are about equal in men and women. Obviously different reasons for infertility due to different functions of the reproductive systems but both systems do malfunction and have problems. For female infertility, several different approaches can be used.
After being tested to check and see what the problems are there are a couple different things you can consider. If your egg production is down or simply not there you can use an egg donor. The eggs can be fertilized by your partner's sperm or a sperm donor and placed into your uterus called uterine insemination.
Sometimes it may be a hormone imbalance, which can sometimes be treated easily. You will want to try to least expensive things first of course. They normally are checking for estradiol (E2) and follicle stimulating homone (FSH). Some offices start by doing a sonohystogram first, which is a special ultrasound. However, talk to your doctor about all of the options available in order to choose the one that is best for you.
Unknown Infertility
If you have had all the prior tests done and it is still unknown, why you are unable to conceive then your doctor may recommend a minor surgery done to help find the cause of your female infertility. This might uncover underlying conditions that may not otherwise be seen. For more info see http://www.infertilitytreatmentoptions.com/Pregnancy_On_Ifertility_And_Mental_Health on Pregnancy On Ifertility And Mental Health.
Support System
Having a good support system is vital to a positive and healthy mental state when dealing with any problems. You and your partner need to keep a good line of communication going at all times. Also keep lines of communication open at all times with your doctors. Ask questions and get answers. You may be recommended for counseling. Use that tool to help you through. Infertility is not an easy issue to deal with and you need a good support system to pull you through. One of the normal emotions to have is anger. Address this anger and voice it to your counselor and partner but do not dwell on it. You are not at fault because there may be medical conditions that you were not aware of. Getting the help you need to have a baby is the best thing for you to do. Sometimes in life, we just need to ask for help.

The daily transactions on the Forex, or foreign exchange markets, are so vast that they dwarf the total amount of money invested in stock markets across the globe. With over two trillion dollars in daily volume, the Forex is the most significant of the global monetary marketplaces
Since the introduction of the Euro to the world currency mix, the Forex has seen exponential growth. Add the rise of the Internet, and what had been the exclusive domain of the world's great banks, financial institutions and super wealthy with at least a million dollars to invest became available to small investors who had PCs, Internet connections, and a few thousands of dollars in risk capital.
There is a very wide mix of entities, from individual brokers to corporations to governments, engaged in currency dealing through Forex online trading. And the currency market, because it does not operate form a single physical exchange like the NYSE, is ideal for Forex online trading. There are, of course, cites around the globe with large numbers of Forex brokers, and the advent of Forex online trading has connected all of them electronically. Forex online trading is now conducted around the clock every day of the year.
Forex Pre-Internet
In pre-Internet days, Forex business was conducted over the telephone and the only way in which individual investors could participate was to go to their bank and have a banker place their currency trade, or phone the bank to request that it be placed. For most of its history, the currency market saw very little individual involvement.
But Forex online trading has changed all that. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of individual investors have taken advantage of their around-the-clock online access and, just like larger institutions, are now engaging in Forex online trading twenty-four hours a day. Geography no longer matters, because business hours are always ongoing somewhere in the world.
Forex Trading Today
Forex traders can now have a hands-on role in their investments by continually observing market trends so that they can close their Forex online trading positions when the market turns against them. Forex online trading has also benefited from improvements in encryption technology, making investors feel more secure about having money online. For more info see http://www.e-forextradingsystem.com/Articles/Forex_Online_Trading.php on Forex Online Trading.
Forex online trading, in short, has become big business. And every big business will eventually spawn cottage business; Forex online trading is not different. There are now hundreds of websites offering advice and software designed to improve an investor's chance of success in the Forex online trading game.
But you should make sure, before you decide to give your money to any Forex online trading site, that its software is compatible with your PC's operating system. And take the time to comparison shop for commission fees. You'd be surprised to know how widely they can vary among brokers. And above all else, find out how the broker intends to let withdraw your Forex online trading earnings.

More and more parents are turning to home schooling in order to spare their children the violence, bullying, and peer pressure which have invaded so many public school classrooms and made them environments unfriendly to serious learning. And many parents also prefer to monitor their children's learning progress first-hand, instead of depending on the end-or-term report card to let them know if their child is having difficulty with a subject.
Finding The Correct Home Schooling Curriculum
The advent of the home PC with its Internet connection has also contributed significantly to the growing popularity of home schooling. The Internet allows parents new to what is involved with a home schooling curriculum to access inexpensive online schools with information on what is required of a home schooling curriculum, and daily lesson plans with activities which will help home schooling parents become effective teachers.
The local school district will also offer guidance on the necessary home schooling curriculum, along with suggestions on the best ways to keep your kids interested in their studies. There are also many excellent books on the subject of home schooling, written by educators and loaded with information on how to find the home schooling curriculum requirements in your school district, and the proper techniques for teaching the various subjects.
Required Subjects
The basic home schooling curriculum, however, is similar in all US states. It includes math, science history, and English, and children will of course have to learn how to read and write. Parents whose children show aptitude for other subjects like music, writing, or art can include those if they wish. The parents will be required to maintain a daily log of their childrens' lessons, and the children will be required to progress at least as quickly as their public school counterparts. But the specific rules for home schooling may very from state to state. For more info see http://www.homeschoolresults.com/Articles/Florida_Home_Schooling.php on Florida Home Schooling.
The purpose of a home schooling curriculum is to make sure that the children have a clear idea of what material they need to cover each day and when they will be tested on it. It will also list the completion dates for their upcoming reports and other projects.
As long as your home schooled child performs well in his or her year-end exams, you school district superintendent is not likely to ask for a review of your home schooling curriculum. But an unsatisfactory score on the exam will require you to review you home schooling curriculum with the superintendent to determine its suitability and make any necessary adjustments.

Article Title: Lasik Eye Surgery: Understanding The Techniques

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
In the world of 21st century medicine, the many surgical procedures which fall under the umbrella term "LASIK eye surgery" are growing ever more complex. Those considering LASIK eye surgery, therefore, might find an explanation of the differences between the procedures helpful.
The LASIK surgeries which are directed toward correcting astigmatisms and nearsightedness fall into three classifications. They are corneal incisions, flap procedures, and photablation.
Corneal Procedures
The corneal incision procedure, sometimes referred to as a keratotomy, is appropriate in cases of misshapen corneas interfering with optical refraction. Poor refraction mean poor eyesight, and LASIK eye surgery which reshapes the cornea will improve refraction. Within the corneal incision family are three slightly different approaches to LASIK eye surgery.
For those suffering from astigmatism, astigmatic keratotomy, or AK, entails the surgeon cutting and then smoothing bulges in the cornea to produce a curve which allows better refraction.
In mild cases of myopia, or nearsightedness, the LASIK eye surgery procedure radial keratotomy, or RK, is the treatment of choice. This technique surrounds the cornea with a spoke-like arrangement of incisions, causing it to flatten. RA is slowly being supplanted by more advanced techniques.
At one time, heaxagonal keratotomy, or HA, was the LASIK eye surgery used to correct farsightedness, but its adverse side effects were so pronounced that it has been nearly eliminated as an option.
Flap Procedures
LASIK actually gets its name from one of the flap procedures, the Laser-assisted In-situ Keratomileusis. In this procedure, the surgeon cuts a flap through the epithelium and into the stroma of the eye, and uses an excimer laser to remove any material which might be responsible for the patient's vision problems.
Epi-LASIK surgery is similar to LASIK eye surgery, except that the flap the surgeon cuts does not go deeper than the epithelium. Because this procedure requires the use of neither a blade not alcohol, the recovery period is both less painful and shorter.
LASEK surgery, while it to only cuts a flap in the epithelium, loosens the flap with alcohol and therefore is slightly more painful, and requires a longer healing period, than epi-LASIK surgery. But it is an ideal option for those not qualified for LASIK eye surgery. For more info see http://www.2020lasikeyesurgery.com/Articles/Lasik.php on Lasik.
Automated lamellar keratoplasty, while it has traditionally been the LASIK eye surgery performed on those with either hyperopia or myopia, is rapidly becoming obsolete. This procedure, which usually lasts an hour, also creates a flap in the stroma.
Photoablation
Photoreactive keratectomy is the most common of the photoablation LASIK eye surgery procedures. PRK is the step in LASIK and LASEK surgeries during which the surgeon uses UV radiation to remove damaged or useless tissue from the eye and reshapes the cornea with an excimer laser. PKA, which takes very little time, can be used to treat astigmatism, and near and farsightedness.

When you go bankrupt life for attaining credit is very difficult. Many companies are wary of loaning money, or even allowing you to open a bank account on the basis of your bankruptcy. You will need to search for a bank that will allow you to open a new bank account. The bank may impose conditions and limits for this bank account. They may limit the amount of money you are allowed to withdraw and state that you need to keep a certain amount in the account to avoid fees.
The bank will check your credit and find the bankruptcy. It is a good idea to tell them you have had a bankruptcy so there are not surprises and they are more inclined to help you. It may take three or more years for you to be eligible for loans. You do not want to jeopardize this new start by overdrawing the account or bouncing the check. With the bank systems in place today it is very easy for the bank to monitor your account and they may close your account if you mishandle funds.
Paypal will also allow you to open a savings account if you are having trouble finding a bank to work with. Paypal allows you to pay bills online as well as shop online so you can use it as a bank account until you reestablish credit.
Assets after a bankruptcy are usually limited. You probably don't have a lot of money to put into savings, but as long as you have steady employment you will be able to reestablish credit. You home is another asset. The courts cannot take away your home unless you have been foreclosed. In the event of a foreclosure you will probably be renting until you can establish your credit. Depending on the chapter of bankruptcy you may have been able to convert some asset into a home that courts cannot take away. For instance if you are a truck driver you can turn that asset into a home rather than loose the truck. Of course if you are still using the truck for your job you may be able to keep it under transportation for your employment. For more info see http://www.filingpersonalbankruptcyhelp.com/Student_Loan_Banruptcy/ on Student Loan Banruptcy.
Bankruptcy will create stress and a little havoc in your life during the process, but it can be the solution you need to gain a new start. A lot of people facing bankruptcy have lost their jobs, lost assets from rental properties, or even had a medical problem causing them to mortgage all their assets. To have a life after bankruptcy you may have to have a job that is below your education and be forced to abide by banks rules, but you can reestablish your life after a time.

When exchanging vows in a beach setting, the bride wants a dress that will reflect her taste and the setting of the wedding. Beach wedding dresses reflect the beauty of the bride and the view of sand and sea provides a delightful background to accent the occasion. Planning a beach wedding is the most exciting thing a bride looks forward to once she decides this is her dream wedding.
When looking for beach wedding dresses, the bride knows if she will have a casual ceremony or a formal ceremony. Dress stores have a dress for every bride and every theme. Imagine yourself in a chiffon dress with the a touch of baby's breath in your hair standing on a sandy beach with the wind from the ocean slightly blowing your beautiful draped styled dress as you repeat your vows. After deciding the length and style, you can choose a color and accessories.
Things to keep in mind when planning the wedding and the dress are weather, sand and wind. If you choose one of the long beach wedding dresses, make sure you will have it slightly off the ground for easy walking. Most brides have shoes, but in the case of a beach wedding, sandals or bare feet might suit you better. The designs of beach wedding dresses usually have a flare for softness like with chiffon. A satin dress is beautiful, but may become heavy in the wind and sun. You want your wedding to be perfect so plan every possible need. For more info see http://www.lasvegasweddingdream.com/vegaswedding/las_vegas_wedding_reception.html on best las vegas wedding reception.
Beach wedding dresses have the accessories such as garland of flowers as a halo with a beautiful bouquet to match. When you plan the theme, the dress will be the next important thing along with the accessories. Brides choose outdoor weddings more today then before, because they have so many options for areas, themes, dresses and reception areas. Plan a beautiful dream wedding and pick from the elegant beach dresses that when accented by the background of the beach will make a special occasion even more beautiful.
In addition to the beach wedding, plan the reception right near the beach and spice up the event with dancing on the beach and throwing the bridal bouquet and watching all the women trying to catch it in the sand. Just remember to take care when dancing and walking in the sand if you choose beach wedding dresses that flow to the floor with a simple train. You might want to check with other brides who have had beach weddings to see if they had any regrets to long dresses. Always plan a perfect wedding on the beach with your friends and family.

If you are considering adopting a child one of the things you will need to look into is whether to go for domestic adoption or international adoption. In this article we will discuss the pros and cons of international adoption to give you more information in order to make a better informed decision.
International adoption is generally done by an individual working through an agency (or perhaps a few adoption agencies) and it is often necessary to spend extended periods in the country from which you are adopting a child, usually between one and three weeks.
Apart from the possible cons associated with the extended travel it is also often more costly to adopt a child from another country. These may include travel costs, legal costs and a number of other costs which your adoption agency should be able to inform you of.
International adoption may also come with language and communication problems. If the child you are adopting has a different language to you then you may find it difficult to communicate at first and they may find it difficult adapting to a new language. Children adopted through international adoption are very seldom infants due to the longer adoption process and so they will usually have obtained some language skills in another language.
On the positive side though, there is usually a greater availability of children through international adoption. Many countries are in desperate need of people to adopt children who have been orphaned, abandoned or whose parents are simply too poor to care for them. For example many children in Africa are left orphans due to the extent of the AIDS epidemic in Africa, and many girl babies are abandoned due to cultural and political reasons in China.
In addition, the regulations and requirements for international adoption are often not as stringent as for domestic adoption. Domestic regulations may include requirements regarding the adoptive parents' ages, household situation, and the requirement to take a certain number of classes. These requirements are generally not as strict for international adoption.
In international adoption the birth mother also does not change her mind. The problem with domestic adoption in many cases is the option for the birth mother to change her mind after prospective adoptive parents have been told they will get a child. In international adoptions this is not the case. For more info see http://www.childadoptionguide.org/Child_Adoption.html on child adoption domestically.
In conclusion, there are pros and cons to both international adoption and domestic adoption, hopefully this article has given you a better understanding to know which option will be best suited to you and your lifestyles. International adoption may be a more expensive, lengthy process and perhaps have some language difficulties; but there are also a lot more children available, especially of different races or cultures, and the requirements are generally not as stringent and the birth mother won't change her mind about placing her child with you.

Article Title: Things You Need To Know About Bathroom Plumbing

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
When you start with the bathroom plumbing, you need to consider a few things. The plumbing has to meet the needs of a busy bathroom as well as installing the bathroom plumbing correctly. By accomplishing these two steps, you will ensure that you have less repair of the plumbing in the future.
You will need the correct fittings, sizes of pipes and lengths that fit the toilet, sink, tub and shower. Also included in the bathroom plumbing, you need to make sure the hot water heater is correctly installed and the size of the unit is big enough to fill the needs of your family. No one wants to run out of hot water when taking a shower early in the morning.
When you do your bathroom plumbing, you need to use up to date materials and not out dated materials you received from somewhere else. Plumbing today is more affordable than what we think. The fittings and the pipes need to connect correctly to prevent leaking and future repair.
When installing your plumbing, you need to keep in mind that everything has to be fitted and tight. This includes using plumber's tale, which many beginners forget. This down the line might result in loosening fittings as well as water leakage, which can damage the floor. When in doubt, call your local plumber. Pipes that are behind walls and under floors need special consideration, if you have just one leak, damage will result and you will never see the problem until it is too late. For more info see http://www.i-plumbing.com/Plumber_Contractor on Plumber Contractor.
Things you will need to install your bathroom plumbing:
• Plumbers tape
• Pipe wrenches
• Correct Pipes
• Correct fittings
As you can see, you do not need many tools, but you do need the correct fittings and pipes. If you have a doubt about length of pipe you need, measure the distance from the given area to the area by the sewage pipe and you should have no problems installing your plumbing. When you plan to remodel the bathroom or upgrade the plumbing, you need to understand where the shut off valves need to be as well. If you ever have a problem, the shut off value is important for stopping water from flowing to the fixture in question. Therefore, get your materials together and do some plumbing, but do it the right way.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Identity theft is a serious crime that we all need to be aware of. In this article we look at a number of statistics representing this crime in order to give you a better idea of this crime and how important it is to protect yourself against it.
Identity theft was first mentioned in literature in the 1990's, studies showed that between 2001 and 2002 there was an 11-20% increase in this crime, while between 2002 and 2003 this figure had increased to 80%.
The Javelin/Better Business Bureau survey from January 2006 showed that there was a decrease in identity theft between 2003 and 2006 though. In 2003 the adult victims of identity theft living in the United States was 10.1 million in 2003, 9.3 million in 2005 and 8.9 million in 2006.
Identity theft statistics from the Javelin report however do show an increase in the fraud amount. In 2003 the one year fraud amount was $53.2 billion, $54.4 billion in 2005 and $56.6 billion in 2006.
Identity theft statistics show that in Waco, Texas, alone there was a 700% increase in identity theft cases between 2004 and 2005.
The Bureau of Justice Statistics estimated that in a six month period in 2004, a total of 3.6 million households were affected by identity theft.
Identity theft can also have severe consequences for businesses. Identity theft statistics show that it may cost a company up to $90,000 or more when just one laptop is stolen. These fees include fines, credit monitoring, public relations damage control and class action litigation.
45% of all identity theft cases are caused by stolen laptops. The second most frequent problem was data leaks from records lost by third part business partners or outsourcing companies. This second component makes up about 29% of all the cases.
The Identity Theft Resource Center says that, "Studies on the total cost of identity theft vary. One study said that identity theft cost US Businesses and consumers $56.6 billion in 2005."
A survey done by the Identity Theft Resource centre in the spring of 2006 showed some frightening results with regards to phishing. Out of 309 people surveyed, 165 people said they did not know what phishing was, while only 77 people answered correctly. For more info see http://www.preventidentitythefthelp.com/Identity_Theft_Protection on identity theft protection.
The Javelin report from 2005 however indicated that offline/traditional methods of identity theft were still more popular than online methods. The identity theft statistics they gave were 68.2% offline and 11.6 online.
In conclusion, although the number of adult victims of identity theft has decreased since 2003, the amounts involved have increased, and identity theft remains a very serious crime. Most criminals involved in identity theft are still using offline methods but we should also be cautious of online methods such as phishing. The statistics themselves may vary depending on different reports but the fact remains the same, these identity theft statistics are a reason to inform yourself about identity theft and take better precautions to protect yourself.

South Beach diet has taken America by storm. Many are swearing by its ability to knock of those unwanted bulges and the knack of keeping cholesterol in control.
Followers of South Beach diet are asked to abstain from bad carbohydrates abundantly found in processed food and food products made from refined flour. Instead, they are asked to consume food containing good carbohydrates. Similarly, the dieters are asked to opt for mono saturated fats instead of saturated fats.
South Beach strongly disapproves of fast food like pizzas, burgers and other ready-to –eat foodstuffs made up of refined flour. However, many times people find it rather inconvenient to cook food that is as per the recommendation given by South Beach diet. This is especially true for those who are hard pressed for time.
However, there are brands that offer frozen food. Many might find the thought of frozen food and South Beach diet a little difficult to digest. But the pairing is possible, especially if you are developing the products in consultation with the doctor who formulated the diet.
Take for instance Kraft Foods. This giant in the food industry has brought a whole line of products targeted towards those South Beach diet followers. This includes frozen food products. Kraft Foods have developed these products in consultation with Dr. Arthur Agatston. Hence, you can lay to rest any doubts you may have over the suitability of these products. All the products are made from whole grains, vegetables and fruits approved by South Beach diet. Only olive and canola oil are used in preparation. In case of non—vegetarian products, only lean meat is used. For more info see http://www.southbeachdietclub.com/sbdclub/southbeachdiet-food-list.html on southbeachdiet food list.

With the dramatic increase in senior citizens turning to reverse mortgages as a way to finance their retirements, the importance of having ethical reverse mortgage brokers has increased dramatically as well. Ethical standards for reverse mortgage lenders have been established in the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders' Association Code of Conduct, but not all reverse mortgage brokers deal with members of the NRMLA.
What Your Broker Should Tell You
Many people who decide to take a reverse mortgage rely on their reverse mortgage brokers for information about the costs of the process about which an ethical reverse mortgage broker will be forthcoming. Yours should be willing at the very least to tell you the following:
• The cost of your application fee may not be refundable, so potential borrowers clarify that in advance. The application fee covers the cost of a home appraisal and a check to determine if the potential borrower is in arrears on any other federally-insured loans.
• Closing fees can be added to the loan itself, but if they are, will accrue interest. Some of closing fees are comparable to the closing fees of regular mortgages, but others are strictly designed as part of the reverse mortgage process. The origination fee and continuing loan servicing fees will differ widely among reverse mortgage lenders.
• At the loan's termination, there may be shared equity or value appreciation fees assessed. If so, they will entitle the reverse mortgage broker to a share of your home's residual value.
If you find reverse mortgage brokers hesitant to discuss these fees, immediately see warning signs and look elsewhere. Reverse mortgage brokers who take advantage of the ignorance of prospective borrowers are, unfortunately, far more common than one would like to think.
The sum you will actually receive for your reverse mortgage payment, whether you take it as a single amount, in monthly payments, or as a line of credit, can differ by thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the abilities and honesty of the reverse mortgage brokers with whom you consult. For more info see http://www.i-reversemortgages.com/Reverse_Mortgage_Brokers on Reverse Mortgage Brokers.
Take Your Time
Take the time to shop among reverse mortgage brokers for the lowest fees; if you have family members or friends who have taken out reverse mortgages, ask them about their experience and whether they are satisfied with the performance of their reverse mortgage broker; if there are senior citizens advocacy groups in your community, find out whether they can recommend any reverse mortgage brokers.
Make sure your reverse mortgage broker finds the loan which is right for your needs; you have the right to a retirement as worry-free as you can make it!

Anybody who has recently spent time trying to find a permanent job would most likely be willing to attest as to just how hard it is, especially if it is for a specific job. If you have your heart set on a specific career then you will often find that there is no such thing as the perfect job out there for you and thus spend a lot of time moving from one job to the next. Work should be fulfilling, challenging and fun, and that is why a lot of people are looking towards a temporary travelling job as a temporary solution to this problem.
Take A Breather
If you have had enough of moving from one job to the next and want to take a break from the rat race then a temporary travelling job may provide you with the opportunity that you are looking for. It would give you the time that you needed to assess your options, weigh up what you actually want to do in life and try to work out where to head next. If you have a regular pay check coming in then this would make it all the more easy, but what if you could see some of the world at the same time?
There are thousands of temporary travelling jobs out there, from nursing to entertaining to working on a cruise ship. Regardless of what your skills are, you will more than likely be able to find something for you out there. All skills and qualifications can be used to gain a temporary travelling job because you can easily perform most professions and tasks on the road somewhere.
Just Cruising
Obviously, the cruise option may sound the most appealing of all of the temporary travelling jobs out there. You would be working but meeting people from all walks of life and seeing the world too. Working on a cruise ship is generally a lot of fun and you can earn between $2000 and $6000 a month, which is higher than most temporary jobs at home would offer. This is a temporary travelling job with extremely long hours though. Some days you may actually be on your feet for twelve hours and would only get one day off a week. You would also need the discipline to be able to stick to a strict timetable. If none of that fazes you then go for it! For more info see http://www.temporaryjobshelp.com/Temporary_Job_Opportunities/ on Temporary Job Opportunities
You would be on the cruise ship often between 4 and 6 months, and if all went well then your contract would be renewed after your original one drew to an end. For a temporary travelling job, it can often turn into a long-term career. However, you would be away from your friends, family and home for months at a stretch with no way of getting home if you wanted to. This requires mental and physical strength and resolve. Homesickness is fine for the first few days, but would you be able to put it to the back of your mind after a few weeks? If the answer is yes then I believe you may well have found the perfect temporary travelling job for you!

Article Title: Teaching English In Japan: Becoming A Jet-setter

There is, in Japan, a great demand for native English speakers teaching English, but most of that demand comes from private English "conversation schools", or Ekaiwa, or JET, the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program.
Teaching English in Japanese Ekaiwa
Ekaiwa are very common in Japan, and are "schools" in which those teaching English will be actually offering individual of small class sessions of conversations. Ekaiwa give Japanese of every age a chance to engage in real English conversation; teaching English in this way can give the teacher a chance to see their students progress in a very short time.
There are chains of ekaiwa in Japan, rather like there are chains of ballroom dancing studios in the US. The premier chains include Geos and ECC, which have upwards of two hundred ekaiwa, but there are thousands of smaller schools. Salaries and working conditions will vary according to the money behind each operation.
Those wanting to teach English in the Japanese ekaiwas can contact one of the recruitment offices that the chain ekaiwa operators have established abroad, in particular in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. While the better schools in the most desirable locations may require degrees in English and teaching experience, many ekaiwa only require a college degree.
The JET Program
Many people, however, find that the premiere English teaching jobs in Japan come through the JET program, overseen by the Japanese government. The JET program, while it does include employment teaching English in Japanese schools on a daily basis, is really designed to expose the Japanese people to foreigners.
Most of those teaching English in the JET program are assistant teachers in Japanese middle and high schools. They must be under forty, and have both excellent language skills and a college degree--although the field does not matter--and they are not allowed to choose the part of Japan in which they will be working. If accepted to the JET program, however, their airfare will be provided. For more info see http://www.teachingjobshelp.com/ on Teaching.
Those accepted to teach English in the JET program will have to have great interpersonal skills, because they will be immersed in a foreign culture and left more or less to their own devices as far as seeing that their basic needs are met. And they will be responsible for representing their native countries while in Japan.
Given a choice between the ekaiwa and JET English teaching positions, most of those considering a job in Japan opt for the JET program, which offers better salaries and, most of the time, better working conditions. But if you are young and resourceful, and want to see Japan while getting paid for doing something that is second nature to you--speaking English--an ekaiwa job can be just the ticket!.

Article Title: What Is A Steam Sauna?

If you love the feeling of warm steam in your shower, you might very well find yourself a fan of the steam sauna. Saunas were first invented in Finland centuries ago. In their traditional form, saunas are wooden structures in which rocks are heated, and water is then thrown over them to produce clouds of steam. The steam heats your skin and body, producing many health benefits, including improved circulation and cleansing of the body through sweat. Most people lose over a pint of water in a steam sauna session. That water carries with it the impurities and toxins that have built up inside us. Steam saunas are also said to relieve sore muscles, clear the respiratory system, help us to relax, improve our metabolic rate, and renew and refresh the skin.
Steam, or wet, saunas provide the benefits of a cardiovascular workout without stress or strain on the joints. Your heart rate speeds up 50% to 75% in a twenty minute steam sauna bath. This will also help speed up the metabolism and increase fat burning. In the long run, a steam sauna can help you lose weight. The steam sauna also draws toxins out of tense and sore muscle tissues, relaxing them and repair damaged tissues. This is especially helpful after a workout. Aromatherapy oils can be added to the water in the steam sauna for further emotional and health benefits. This allows a dual effect of cleansing and healing when using the steam sauna.
Traditional steam saunas are made of wood, but there are modern saunas more like molded shower units. In these saunas, jets release steam into the air. Some even are meant to replace the conventional shower. They feature massaging water jets, bench, shower head and steam generator. Also available are steam cabinets – portable steam saunas with water tanks that can be plugged in. These are very useful for people who don't own their own homes and can't install a full steam sauna, or who move often.
Steam saunas have been used for generations to promote health and improve general well being. The benefits of steam saunas and their safety are well documented. If you use a steam sauna, be sure to limit your time to fifteen or twenty minutes, and leave if you should feel dizzy or ill. People with heart problems are also advised to check with their doctors before using a steam sauna, because the dilation of blood vessels can be risky in some people. For most, however, the steam sauna is the perfect way to rejuvenate after a long hard day.
