According to ancient Chinese legend, the numbers of the Lo Shu square were on the shell of a huge turtle that appeared from the river Lo. One wise man noticed the turtle and memorized the numbers on its shell.
The original square was first mentioned thousands of years ago; however, its original schemes were lost, and no specific descriptions are available either. Even Confucius had not seen the original schemes.
In its modern form, LoShu was published in the Chinese treatise in around 1200 AD. Since ancient times, Lo Shu was regarded as a nonary scheme which "portrays the vital properties of matters". In Chinese metaphysics, this square represents the concept of space connected with the concept of time.
The square has many astounding properties, like mathematical and metaphysical ones, which are studied and used in Chinese numerology. However, we will discuss the properties of the square that pertain to feng shui.
In feng shui, this square is used for the analysis of energy in any limited area of space (house, apartment, room, surface of a table, etc.). The energy map based on LoShu is usually called a geomantic map (this is a modern Western term, not ancient Chinese one). Both the trigrams of the Early Heaven and the trigrams of the Late Heaven can be used to understand the numbers of the Lo Shu square. The Late Heaven trigrams are used for the analysis of the indoor energy.
The square is called magical because the sum of the numbers in its rows, columns, and diagonals equals one and the same number - 15. If we divide 15 by the number of rows or columns (3), we obtain 5. Number 5 is in the center, representing the equilibrium of the middle. The remaining numbers are around it. The larger numbers can be regarded as Yang, smaller numbers can be regarded as Yin, and 5 is a neutral number.
Since the Sung period, the Chinese started to transform LoShu by subtracting or adding numbers to it. There are countless other options for such transformations. For instance, you can swap the numbers in opposite corners, you can rotate the scheme like swastika, and you can rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise.
Another similar method to divide the space into sectors is a Bagua map. People often ask: what's better - the Lo Shu square or Bagua map? Both, the square and the map are used to determine the sectors in space. Different schools give preference to either the square or map, and so do different feng shui practitioners. Once you learn more about each, you will be able to make your choice.
Bagua sectors: There are 9 Bagua sectors, each of which is 45°.
LoShu sectors:
- Sector 1 is in the North, its value is 30°, and its element is Water.
- Sector 2 is in the Southwest, its value is 60°, and its element is Earth.
- Sector 3 is in the East, its value is 30°, and its element is Wood.
- Sector 4 is in the Southeast, its value is 60°, and its element is Wood.
- Sector 5 is in the Center, its element is Earth. Sector 6 is on the Northwest, its value is 60°, and its element is Metal.
- Sector 7 is in the West, its value is 30°, and its element is Metal.
- Sector 8 is in the Northeast, its value is 60°, and its element is Earth.
- Sector 9 is in the South, its value is 30°, and its element is Fire.

Being a single parent can be a difficult time in life. The same amount of work is there, but you have no one to share it with. Single parents are often stretched so thin that they miss a lot of crucial steps when it comes to personal safety, which can significantly impact their ability to live a safe and happy life. If you are a single parent, you might be struggling to make ends meet, but that is not an excuse to ignore your weaknesses when it comes to home security measures that you should be taking.
If you are a single mother, do not overly advertise the fact that there's no man living in the home. It might be stereotypical, but many criminals will target homes that do not have a man to fight them off. This is true no matter how strong or able to protect yourself you are. Criminals assume that women are weak, and without a man in the home will be unable to fight off the attack.Things like using only your last name on the mailbox, and recording a voicemail message that doesn't allude to the fact that it's only you and the kids, can avoid giving too much info away to potential attackers.
Be aware of how having one parent affects your kids' security. Do they come home after school to an empty home because you are still at work? Don't leave the key under the mat or above the doorframe, where any criminal will know to look for it. Make sure that your home security is strong enough to protect them, and that they know what to do in an emergency. Instill the confidence in them to handle the home while you're away. Consider 'nanny cams' or other forms of surveillance. You can even use cameras that allow access online so that you can watch them in the afternoons from work.
If you are dating, be aware of how that can impact your security. Avoid bringing new dates to your home too soon. Instead, meet in a neutral place. Introduce them to your home and children slowly. Do not give them a key to your home until it's become a long-term relationship. If a relationship ends on bad terms, a few simple changes like adding new door and window alarms and changing the lock on your front door can go a long ways towards keeping your family safe.
Single parenthood is often a stressful time. Raising kids by yourself means you're in charge of everything in the home, from cooking meals to helping with homework to making sure your children are safe when you tuck them into bed at night. Rest easier knowing that you and the kids are protected when you've taken the right security precautions. If you are a single parent trying to keep yourself and your children safe, avoid discussing your situation too openly, protect latchkey kids with the right security precautions, and install home security measures such as cameras and alarms.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Starting from February 4, 2010 it's a good idea to take a look at the feng shui horoscope tips for the Year of the Tiger.
According to the solar calendar, the Year of White Tiger began on February 4, 2010 and will end on February 3, 2011. In this article, we will see what the Four Pillars of Destiny have to say regarding this year.
The Four Pillars of Destiny is one of the methods used for feng shui horoscope predictions. It analyses the celestial trunks and their earthly branches, using specific numerological signs. It allows analyzing any date and seeing the combination of its elements. Based on these combinations, we can draw conclusions about the year. We need to assess the strength or weakness of the elements individually and combined, as well as know their interaction.
The Four Pillars of Destiny is calculated at the beginning of a year. In this case, it's 6 o'clock 49 minutes on February 4, 2010. Knowing the date, we need to study the map for the year of the Tiger (2010), which we have already done so that you don't have to. The map didn't have the elements of Water and Fire, which is a shortcoming for the year 2010.
Fire represents the year's intellect, and Water represents the year's resources; therefore, 2010 will be marked with a shortage in resources (in the broad sense) and reduced demand for reasonable ideas and solutions.
If we take a look at the map, we will see that it has a clearly pronounced Wood element. At first glance, this seems to be good because Wood is the Tiger's native element. However, let's keep in mind that good energies require harmony and balance of all the elements. Therefore, a surplus of any element will reflect in life events. In this case, too much of the Wood element will increase rivalry and competition.
The map has a strongly expressed element of Metal. According to feng shui horoscope, it means that the year will be full of struggle for power and leadership. The ambition to succeed in careers will also increase.
The earthly branches of the first day and first hour of 2010 (Rooster and Rabbit) are in conflict with each other. This means that it will be hard to avoid quarrels and misunderstandings between people. We can expect conflicts in personal relationships, as well as the relationships between countries. Tension in the hot spots may increase.
The earthly branch of the Year of Tiger and the earthly branch of its first hour (Rabbit) are located in the same astrological house of growth and development. This is a good sign, indicating that the temporary aggravation of the worldwide situation will ultimately have a positive impact on the spiritual level of humanity as a whole.
Finally, the rabbit that is present in the map is the sign of the so-called "good luck of the peach flower" for those born under the Horse sign. According to feng shui horoscope, the lonely Horses have a great chance to meet their significant other in 2010.

In China, people are confident that Kuan Kung (also known as Kuan Ti) was a real-life eminent military commander that lived in ancient China.
This commander was so revered for his heroic feats that after his death, the Chinese started to believe religiously in his spiritual protection and patronage. In the 12th century, Kuan received the title of Duke and then Prince, and in the 16th century, he received a posthumous title of Emperor and God.
These days, the Emperor Kuan is still considered to be one of the main deities of China -he is the defender of the country, the patron saint of crafts (including trade), the god of abundance and literature, the god of war, as well as the patron saint of the police, Chinese mafia and business people.
He is also so popular today because he is considered to be the patron deity of wealth. You can find his figurines and images sold in any Chinese shops or online.
The Chinese believe that they need to be protected from harmful external influences, and that this can be achieved only by appealing to protective gods, especially the Gods of War. Kuan Kung is the most popular deity of war that can grant this kind of protection. The Chinese say that he is so fierce in supporting a home that demons and evil spirits will not dare to enter a house, the entrance of which is protected by the image or figurine of Emperor Kuan.
The Kuan's image / figurine can often be found in the living rooms of Chinese houses, facing the door so that the incoming people first pay their respects to him. Alternatively, this image / figurine can be placed in the northwest bagua sector of a home or individual room. The northwest bagua sector is responsible for Helpers and Travel.
There are also some affirmations that can be pronounced for attracting good people and safe trips. These affirmations need to be pronounced a few times in the sector of Helpers and Travel, where you place Kuan Kung. Following are sample affirmations: "I am always lucky with helpers. I am always surrounded by friendly and loving people. The world is filled with wonderful people, and I always meet them. Traveling is great. I love the road and I trust it. My road always shows a green light. Traveling brings me joy. I have the right to receive assistance and support from other people. I deserve it."
The image of Kuan Kung can come in a number of designs. One of the popular ones is a bronze figurine of this deity that shows him in a peaceful posture. Another popular option is a small canvas with his image, which can be hung on a wall.
Kuan is one of the most powerful protection symbols that could guard anyone's home from malevolent people, evil spirits and negative energy. This god can also bring us success, happiness and wealth. This talisman can become a perfect gift for someone you truly love and care about, such as your family and friends.

The five feng shui elements (also referred to as keys) are the basis of this teaching. These primary keys are: earth, metal, water, wood and fire. The golden rule of feng shui is to achieve harmony and balance between these five keys through adjusting the space in which we live.
When the five elements are properly balanced both, indoors and outdoors, the person can expect to gain numerous benefits. These include health, wealth, abundance, and improved interpersonal relationships. Ultimately, this leads to happiness in life. If the elements are, on the contrary, in chaos and imbalance, a person may find themselves experiencing all sorts of issues, including missed opportunities, hindered interpersonal relationships, declining health, and financial hardships. In other words, it's unhappiness.
So, let's talk about the five feng shui elements, learn their symbols, and see how they may interact with each other (both, positively and negatively).
The keys can interact with each other in one of the three cycles: enhancing, weakening, and controlling. Some of these cycles are positive, while others are negative. Let's take a look at the cycles:
The Enhancing Cycle: This is the most positive cycle where all of the five elements are in harmony, which results in happiness, health, and abundance. Here are the steps of this cycle: wood boosts fire, fire boosts earth, earth boosts metal, metal boosts water, and water boosts wood.
The Controlling Cycle: This is the worst cycle where all of the elements are in chaos, and clash with one another. Here are the steps of this cycle: wood controls earth, fire controls metal, earth controls water, metal controls wood, and water controls fire.
The Weakening Cycle: This is a specific cycle that is neither positive nor negative. It's a tool that can be used to eliminate negative energy. However, if it's used improperly it can drain the positive energy. Thus, its use requires skills and knowledge. Here are the steps of this cycle: fire weakens wood, earth weakens fire, metal weakens earth, water weakens metal, and wood weakens water.
In order to be able to match the elements into balanced and harmonious energies, we need to know the symbols, shapes, and colors of the five feng shui elements. Here they are:
Water (symbols): glass, mirrors, stained glass, crystal, aquariums, marine landscapes, roads, lakes, and waterfalls. Shapes: serpentine and wavy. Colors: blue and black.
Wood (symbols): flowers, plants, trees, wood furniture, woodcrafts, wicker chairs, rattan mats, cloth, paper, and paintings depicting nature. Shapes: cylindrical and rectangular. Color: green.
Fire (symbols): candles, lamps, incense, heating appliances, fireplaces, stoves, sun, animals, birds, children, wool, leather goods, articles made of feathers; paintings depicting fire, sunrise, and sunset; paintings depicting people and animals. Shapes: triangular and sharp edges. Color: red.
Earth (symbols): ceramics, bricks, crystal, porcelain, glazed tiles, stones, sculptures, globes, and pictures depicting terrestrial landscapes (mountains, cliffs, and desert). Shape: square. Colors: terracotta and ocher.
Metal (symbols): metal objects, bells, coins, swords, jewelry made of precious metals, and the pictures of metal objects. Shapes: oval and round. Colors: white, silver and gold.
As you can see, there is a lot that can be learned in order to harmonize the five feng shui elements, and balance your surroundings in the physical world. Balance your life, and you may become happier.

Lillian Too is one of the leading Feng Shui advocates and practitioners in the world.
She has studied with some of the greatest masters and soaked up the in-depth knowledge that they revealed to her. Her studies span over 30 years.
Lillian had a lucrative banking career, which she retired from to learn and practice Feng Shui; she is the living proof that this ancient Chinese notion works. She learned to apply this notion in her everyday life, and it has helped her achieve tremendous luck and successes in business, personal life, and all other aspects of her life.
Having graduated with an MBA (Master of Business Administration) from Harvard Business School, she grew to be the first female head of a public company in Malaysia. In 1982, she became the first female CEO of a Bank in Asia. These true triumphs of hers were followed by a number of other extraordinary accomplishments in the competitive world of banking.
Having built a substantial career and a nice bank account, she retired and devoted herself to motherhood and writing. Lillian Too has achieved extraordinary results in writing – she is the bestselling Feng Shui writer in the world. She wrote over 80 bestsellers that are translated into 30 foreign languages. Articles about this extraordinary person were published in a number of newspapers, magazines, and journals.
Later, Lillian Too founded WOFS – a feng shui retail company, as well as the institute of certified consultants, which runs certified courses in feng shui. Her programs are very in-depth – they incorporate classroom lectures and on-site investigations (homes, apartments, and offices), which are followed by discussions and daily revisions. These intensive programs give a firm ground in the fundamentals, and teach the students the various formulas to perform an effective review of a property.
She also conducts master classes on Chinese destiny chart examination, in order to reveal a person's wealth potential, as well as the potential and timing for their success, luck, love life, and more. These evaluations can help to actualize anyone's potential.
Lillian lives in Kuala Lumpur, and her home is a true example of the calm and serenity that can be achieved by implementing feng shui; her home is a true tribute to this ancient notion. Lillian decided to share 356 photographs of her home with the readers in her book named "Living with Good Feng Shui." The book and photographs explain how exactly Lillian enhances her living and working space with feng shui.
Lillian plans and hopes to keep increasing the global reach of feng shui through her books and teachings, which should help anyone achieve more from their lives.
The earth still has puzzles for people to solve, but some people have learned to identify many of the unseen patterns better than others. An ancient Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu said: "Let food be delicious, clothing - beautiful, home - friendly, and life - joyful." The last statement reflects the essence of Feng Shui, as well as it reflects exactly what Lillian Too helps people achieve using this art and science.

Article Title: Kua Number Explanation and Formula

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
According to feng shui, Kua number is a personal number calculated using a birth date.
This number can help to determine good and bad cardinal directions for a person. There are 8 Kua directions - 4 good and 4 bad. The good directions are: Sheng Chi (Success), TIen Yi (Health), Nien Yen (Love), and Fu Wei (Personal Growth). The bad directions are: Ho Hai (Failure), Ng Kwai (Five Ghosts), Luk Sart (Six Murders), and Cuet Ming (Total Loss). At the bottom of this article, you can find the formula to calculate your Kua.
Kua can be used to know which way to sit and sleep in your home. Try to make sure that you sit facing one of your favorable directions, and that you sleep with your head in one of your favorable directions. Your Kua number can also be used to know the 4 best directions for your entrance door, so that you bring the positive energy in each time you enter the home.
If the door faces a wrong direction, you can work on windows to fix it. In feng shui, windows are considered as doors for the positive Qi energy, which creates happiness. You can let the positive energy enter your home through a window in one of your 4 personal good cardinal directions. So, if your front door is facing the wrong way, you need to find your "happy window" and activate it.
How do you activate a happy window? Here's how: Qi energy flows along with the flow of air and light, so you need to keep your "happy window" clean. If it's a balcony door, remove all household clutter from there. Open this window as often as possible, so that the flow of air enters your home through it. You can also hang nice light curtains on this window. Traditional feng shui says that blinds cut the flow of Qi; if possible, don't use blinds.
Make sure that this window isn't in front of a mirror, so that the good energy isn't reflected back by the mirror. Hang a crystal ball on the window to scatter the positive energy throughout the room. If possible, keep the door to this room open, so that Qi can move freely around your entire home. You can also hang a painting or calendar in red and gold opposite this window. Red and gold are the colors of good luck and wealth, which work as a bait for good energy.
Following is the formula to calculate your Kua number.
Example for women - born in 1983: Add the last two numbers of your year of birth: 8+3 = 11. If the result is a two-digit number, add these two digits until you get a single-digit number: 1+1 = 2. Add 5 to the result: 2 +5 = 7. In this case, Kua is 7. If the result is a two-digit number, add those two digits again until you get a single digit.
Example for men - born in 1973: Add the last two numbers of your year of birth: 7+3 = 10. If the result is a two-digit number, add these two digits until you get a single-digit number: 1+0 = 1. Subtract the result from 10. In this case, Kua number is 9. If the result is a two-digit number, add those two digits again until you get a single digit.

Feng shui gifts come in a large variety to choose from. A number of presents can be made with your own two hands, while others can be purchased online or at your local Chinese store.
Most of the commercial items fall into a very affordable price range, and are made of simple materials. You can also find exquisite presents made of gemstones and precious metals. In this article, we will cover gifts that can be made or purchased, and suggest where to place them.
The very first aspect is to decide what you would want to boost in the life of the person whom you will make a gift to. For instance, if you want to boost their wealth, you can present them a red ribbon with Chinese coins, a wealth vase, a god of wealth, or other similar items. If you want to boost their love relationship, you can present them with various paired figures, such as Koi carps, horses, elephants, and others. You can find gifts for boosting someone's career, health, or any other aspect of their life. Let's cover the gifts for one of the most important aspects of life – wealth.
Gold Ingots: This is one of the most powerful feng shui gifts, as well as it's probably the cheapest one to make with your own two hands. To make this wealth gift on your own, you will need an even number of smooth stones and gold paint in a spray bottle. All you need to do is wash the stones, dry them, spray them with paint, and let it dry. That's it, your gift is done. If you don't want to spend time on this, you can purchase a "Gold Ingot" amulet online. This amulet is best placed near the window (one stone or ingot on each side of the windowsill), diagonally across the main entrance door, or in the wealth zone – the southeast section of any room.
Money Tree: Money tree is yet another powerful wealth symbol, which is also easy to make. For a money tree, you would need a nice jar (maybe a pre-decorated jar), wire, wire cutters, play-dough, and Chinese coins. You need to make tree branches from the wire, and tie Chinese coins to them. Then connect the branches into something that resembles a tree. Place the tree into the jar and secure it with play-dough. Again, if you don't want to spend time, you can purchase money trees online. This amulet is best placed in the wealth zone – the southeast.
Chinese Coins: Chinese coins are a potent wealth attractor. They can be used for a number of different types of feng shui gifts. For instance, you can make a red neck ribbon with a number of Chinese coins tied to it. You can even use a red lanyard and tie coins to it – this will also serve practical purposes. For instance, the person can start wearing their glasses, ID, or keys on their new lanyard with wealth coins. Alternatively, you can make a string with coins to hang on the southeast wall - this talisman will add to the interior of any home, since Chinese coins are very attractive. And again, if you don't want to spend time, you can purchase presents with Chinese coins online.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
If you want to arrange your home by feng shui, you may want to start with feng shui kitchen, because the kitchen is where we to spend a lot of our conscious time.
According to feng shui, the kitchen represents nourishment and prosperity. Good nutrition is always associated with health and wealth. By designing your kitchen in accordance with the principles of feng shui, you may assist in your own prosperity and health.
Feng shui is a rather complicated theory presented by various schools, where tips are usually given for a particular house and the individuals living in it. Despite this, there are basic principles applicable to any kitchen, which will help to make it a feng shui kitchen.
Location: This does not always depend on us. However, if you are building a house or you have the option of re-planning, you can build the kitchen in the right place - the rear of the house, or at least, behind the central axis of the house.
It's considered a negative if you see the kitchen as soon as you enter the house. This may encourage you and other residents to eat non-stop. It may also cause your guests to leave immediately after eating. Even if your kitchen is in the front, do not panic, because there are certain techniques that will help to reduce the possible negatives. You can hang beaded curtains or blinds on the kitchen door. You can also place something bright and distracting diagonally across from the kitchen, such as a painting.
Color Palette: Try to avoid red and orange hues in the kitchen, because they can provoke controversy. Try to use white, light green and light blue, to balance the elements of Fire and Water. For the same reason, try to use the utensils, appliances, and accessories made of stainless steel.
The positioning: One of the most important principles is that the one who cooks is in the dominant position. That is, standing behind the stove or table, you should be facing the door. This may be difficult to achieve in small kitchens; if you have a small kitchen, you can hang a mirror or other object with a reflective surface over the stove. The mirror can be of any size, but the larger the better. It's good if the kitchen is spacious and has a wide doorway - in this case, you do not feel isolated.
According to experts, the kitchen should be based on a triangle – the refrigerator, stove and sink should form the angles of a triangle. The distance between them should be about 6 feet - this will ensure maximum comfort with minimal repetitive movements. This arrangement will also help to separate the elements of Fire (stove, microwave oven) from the elements of Water (refrigerator, sink). They can also be separated with the Wood element, such as wooden furniture, a plant or images of plants.
The stove should not stand next to the window, because heat represents prosperity and wealth, and nobody wants their wealth to fly out the window. The feng shui kitchen has to be kept clean and tidy. If anything breaks, try to get rid of it as fast as possible.

A wealth vase is an ancient Chinese amulet that was used to bring wealth and prosperity to Chinese families from the time immemorial.
Back then, only the wealthiest people could afford to make such a talisman. The vessels would be passed from one generation to another, helping each generation to remain wealthy through the social changes. Today, a wealth vase can be made by anyone who wants to improve their overall financial situation. The efforts spent for the creation of your amulet can bring an impressive "return on investment". The vase has to have a special design and "ingredients." In this article, we give tips for the making of your own vessel of wealth in the traditions of the Chinese feng shui.
Design: The Chinese vases were typically made of ceramic in a traditional Chinese style – they were white with blue drawings on their surface. The images would often portray dragons – the potent symbol of wealth and dreams that come true. Therefore, the first thing to do is to locate a vessel like the one we just described, or something very similar. The most essential aspect is that the vase should not be transparent. Some people use vessels made of metals (copper, silver, and gold) rather than ceramic. The vase should be rounded, squat, and have a narrowed neck (large enough to place the ingredients).
Ingredients: There are a number of ingredients that you can use for your wealth vase. We will list the most essential ones; however, keep in mind that you don't have to use all of them. It will suffice to use those that you can find. Some of the most essential ingredients don't cost much – the most important aspect is to add things that symbolize wealth specifically for you. The ingredients include: soil, dry foods, paper money, coins, gold, special pictures, semi-precious gemstones, crystals, a ring, and a Wealth God figurine. Let's discuss the ingredients and their placement.
Ingredient placement: The soil is the symbol of stability; it should be given to you by someone wealthy; it needs to be placed on the very bottom. Dry foods are the symbol of nourishment and wellbeing – they need to be placed on top of the soil. Next go the paper money and coins (in any currencies), which should preferable be given to you by a wealthy person; the coins and money can be placed in a red sack, and then placed inside. Any gold item can be used to symbolize wealth. The pictures are anything that symbolizes wealth specifically for you, such as mansions, cars, clothes, etc. A ring is a symbol of constant energy circle – it can be placed in a red sack or a small bowl, and then placed inside. Affordable semi-precious gemstones and crystals will help to fill the vessel to its brim, to symbolize abundance. Finally, you will need to place any Chinese Wealth God on top of the "ingredients" – the god will protect your wealth and help you multiply it tenfold.
Cover: The vessel needs to be covered with 5 cloths (blue, green, red, yellow, and white on top), and then tied with 5 strings in the same colors.
Placement: The wealth vase has to be placed in the bedroom, preferably in the southeast (the Wealth and Prosperity zone). Let this potent amulet bring all the material prosperity that you strive for.

Pepper spray has been used by law enforcement agencies and civilians for self defense for several decades. The basis for the pepper spray recipe, however, dates back much further – to ancient China and India. Packed with red chili pepper, warriors would use different methods to subdue an enemy temporarily. In Japan, ninjas were known to use black pepper to their advantage.
Today, derivatives of the chemicals in peppers are still used to create modern forms of pepper-based defense systems. Although there have been several advances in the formulation of pepper spray over the past few decades, in general most sprays on the market contain the same chemicals found in natural peppers.
In 1973, pepper spray containing oleoresin capsicum (OC) derived from hot peppers was developed as an aerosol spray. Its first widespread adoption was by the FBI, for use incapacitating animals and humans for temporary durations. Today, sprays containing CS (orthochlorobenzalmalononitrile) and CN (chloroacetophenone), are the types of pepper spray civilians walk with on an everyday basis. There is a third pepper spray waiting to be introduced to the public called CR. Capsaicin & Dihydrocapsaicin are the main component in most forms of self defense spray, comprising about 80 to 90 percent of the liquid.
Capsaicin, derived from hot peppers, is a mix of many chemical compounds called capsaicinoids. These are the chemicals that cause chili peppers to be so hot. OC is insoluble in water, meaning that it can be diluted by water into a concentration that is nonlethal yet still able to take down an attacker. This solution is then compressed in an aerosol spray can, not unlike that used for hairspray or spray paint. The careful mixture of water and potent chemicals allows the spray to exit the canister in the form of fine droplets.
When it comes out of the canister, the pepper spray solution is propelled at the attacker. The main ingredients cause eye irritation along with a host of other symptoms. The oleoresin capsaicin targets the trigeminal cells in the mouth, nose and stomach as well. These cells are connected to the production of endorphins, which act as a natural painkiller for the human body. This connection makes it possible for some people to eat hot habanero peppers without flinching, although the same people are still affected by the chemicals in pepper spray.
After a targeted individual is sprayed with this substance, they will experience symptoms such as eyes swollen shut for up to 45 minutes, providing plenty of time for you to get away. Eating a hot pepper doesn't sting forever, though, and neither do the effects of pepper spray. There are no long-lasting or permanent effects of being sprayed with this device.
Pepper spray is unlike many other self defense products because its effectiveness relies solely on the chemicals contained in the canister. It requires no physical strength or training to be able to use correctly. For these reasons, carrying pepper spray is a safe and effective way to protect yourself.

Article Title: Feng Shui Decor With a Ying and Yang Balance

People use feng shui decor suggestions to improve the energy in their homes and offices. The goal is to increase the flow of the positive energy and to eliminate or suppress the negative energy.
There are several different schools of feng shui, and each of them has their own way to determine between the good and bad, and controlling them. We believe that this ancient Chinese science is much more intuitive than a set of strict rules proposed by any school or direction. To achieve the balance in your home, you merely need to learn to distinguish between the Ying and Yang energies, and learn to balance these two in your premises as needed.
Ying is the calm, relaxing and passive energy. It embraces dark colors, heavy scents, low furniture, upholstered seats, comfort and coziness. An example of a perfect Ying place would be a secluded ancient castle with a resting room in dark colors, with thick curtains and carpets, dim light, numerous comfortable pillows, and heavy incense.
Yang is moving, agitating and active energy. It embraces light and bright colors, airy aromas, high vertical wardrobes, rigid seats, energy and restlessness. An example of a perfect Yang place is a penthouse in a modern skyscraper, with huge open windows, modern decor with lots of glass and shiny metal, and a light aroma of expensive perfume in the air.
As you can see, these two opposite types of feng shui decor can help you achieve different feels in your rooms. Feng shui typically does not recommend resorting solely to one or the other type of energy. Each room may have both types of energy present, one of which will be more pronounced than the other.
The kitchens and family rooms typically have more of the active than the calm energy. This can be achieved by employing vibrant colors, high tech appliances and media, and large plants. Yet, it's also recommended to add some of the calmer energy by using comfortable seating and small accessories made in deep dark colors.
The bedroom, on the other hand, features the Ying energy for the most part. Therefore, it is advised to remove any equipment from the bedroom and use soft furniture with rounded corners. Many people don't like their bedroom made up of dark Ying colors, and use bright colors instead. It's all about personal preferences and harmony for each individual.
The feng shui decor uses colors, shapes, and materials to achieve a certain feel in each room, as well as outdoors. There are dark and bright colors, deep and pastel tones, sharp-edged and rounded furniture and accessories, etc. The objects can be made of wood, metal, stone, other materials, and combinations thereof. Any modern accessory or furniture item can combine the Ying and Yang energies in it.
You simply need to learn to feel your surroundings, and intuitively determine whether you will benefit from adding more Yang or Ying to this particular room or part of your outdoors. Feng shui is all about developing a feel for your surroundings and learning to improve them naturally.

Article Title: Using Body Language to De-Escalate a Conflict

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Using the right body language is often the key to getting along with people, and this doesn't just apply to friendly situations. Although appropriate body language often depends on cultural contexts, people all over the world rely on body language as a nonverbal form of communication.
Armed with this knowledge, body language can help you in many instances – even if someone is physically or verbally threatening you. Body language can help if someone is trying to start a fight with you, as well as if you're minding your own business and think someone – such as a pickpocket – might be targeting you for attack.
If you ever encounter an individual who you think might pose a threat, look away from him or her, and avoid making eye contact. Many criminals rely on intimidation to get their way. Once a person becomes intimidated, they tend to show signs of being scared or helpless, which gives attackers plenty of fuel to start an incident. If you show a dominant person that you are scared, they will most likely take advantage and pick on you. By refusing to make eye contact, you can take some of this power out of the potential assailant's hands.
Another thing to remember is to consciously focus your energy on remaining calm and continuing to breathe normally. This is harder than it sounds; the adrenaline rush caused by feeling threatened will result in sweating and nervousness. At times, going along with your body's natural response to a situation could mean your anger getting the best of you, leading to a physical fight over an easily avoided confrontation. Remember to act as if you're not scared, concerned, or overly interested in what the other person is doing or saying. If you look confident, but not aggressive, you stand the least chance of being attacked.
If you're exchanging angry words with someone, but want to avoid a physical altercation, do not move closer to them. If they're looking for a fight, walk away. Do not turn around, even if they're yelling obscenities at your back.
It's hard to predict anyone's intentions, whether they are passing by you on the street, or trying to strike up a conversation in a bar. Still, even if you don't know what they're up to, you can use your body language to minimize the chance of being involved in an altercation. Never clench your fist or raise it towards a person. Even if unintentional, it can be mistaken for a physically violent move. If you want to post less of a threat, put your hands into your pocket or keep them at your side.
Anger plays a vital role in body language. The key is to avoid behaving in a threatening manner, even unintentionally. If you are traveling to another country, try to learn about their customs ahead of time. Many commonplace behaviors in America are seen as rude in other countries. For example, in many parts of Asia greetings should be made with a head bow, rather than a handshake. In general, by avoiding making eye contact or potentially threatening gestures, you can avoid further escalating a potential confrontation.

Most people have come into contact with motion sensors when exiting the supermarket or using a public restroom. Today, motion detectors also play a significant role in high-tech home security systems. When the sensor detects motion, it can turn on a light, activate an alarm, or even contact you via email or phone. There are many different types of motion detectors sold for home security, using such techniques as infrared sensors, radio signals, and vibrations to detect the presence of a moving subject.
When purchasing motion sensors for home security, one of the most important factors to keep in mind is how much motion is needed to activate the device. Some, particularly outdoor motion-activated lights, are activated by heavy rain or a gust of wind. Others may be tripped by a pet dog or cat. Still others are fine-tuned enough to only be signaled when a human moves.
Motion detectors also vary based on the range of detection. Some can detect motion only a foot or two in front of the device, while others cover up to 5,000 square feet. Some can detect motion through walls or around corners, while others require a line of sight to the moving subject.
Perimeter alarms are some of the most popular motion-detecting home security devices. These alarms alert you when anyone has entered or left a specified area. Some of the varying uses include a driveway alarm to let you know as someone drives up, or an alarm placed in front of a bedroom door to let you know if a young child or elderly relative is out of bed. In either case, an audible alarm alerts you to the situation.
Other outdoor motion detecting alarms are used to protect specific areas of your property. An excellent example is a swimming pool alarm, which prevents accidental drowning. Other motion alarms can protect your shed or garage, where dangerous chemicals and tools may be stored. A motion-sensing outdoor light mounted near your garage or sliding glass door will illuminate the area if a person or animal gets too close, helping you to see what's going on and likely scaring them away. These devices are particularly useful when placed near large windows. If you hear a crash outdoors, you won't have to guess about what is happening.
Door and window protection is one of the most popular uses for motion alarms. Even those which have sturdy locks can be broken or forced open by a determined intruder. These alarms will let you know the minute someone compromises your home's security. While some work simply by detecting motion inside the home near a door or window, glass sensors react to the sound or vibrations of the window breaking.
With modern motion-sensing technologies, homeowners now have an impressive array of gadgets with which to protect their homes. Whether you opt for motion-activated lighting, a motion detector for your child's bedroom, or a motion alarm on your back door, motion detection can help you protect your family from harm.

Article Title: Can You Use Wasp Spray Instead of Pepper Spray?

Can you use wasp spray as an alternative to pepper spray for self defense? You might have heard rumors that wasp spray works better than pepper spray. Suggestions to purchase bee spray for self defense have been circulating via email for the past few years. If you've gotten an email telling you to buy wasp spray for self defense, think twice. This rumor should not be relied upon for your safety. Although wasp spray might work in a pinch, there are far better options when it comes to protecting yourself.
Using wasp spray against an attacker would be using it in a manner that is inconsistent with its labeling. If your attacker is injured by the spray, you are likely to be held liable, since it is illegal to use the product in this manner. Many forms of wasp spray even warn directly on the label that using it against a human is a punishable offense. This stands even if the target of the spray attacked you first. Wasp spray is a poison, and will affect the attacker until they visit the hospital for an antidote. You could find yourself sued if you used wasp spray and it harmed your target.
Wasp spray has not been tested on humans. Its effects are unknown. Sure, it kills bees on contact, but what about a much larger attacker, such as a human? Though it might work against your attacker, it might not. On the other hand, pepper spray has been specifically formulated to cause the target to involuntarily shut their eyes, leading to temporary blindness. This product is formulated specifically to work against a human, even if they have consumed alcohol or drugs. Wasp spray, meanwhile, is meant for use against wasps.
Because there are so many different formulations of wasp and hornet sprays, the exact effects will be completely unknown until you deploy the canister. At a time when you're being attacked, do you really want to be caught by surprise when your self defense product does not work as intended? It is believed that wasp spray would require a longer contact with the attacker in order to stop the attack. Pepper spray, however, requires just a one-second burst of the spray to bring an attacker to his knees.
One of the major reasons email rumors suggest wasp spray for self defense is because most canisters have a range of 20 feet. However, pepper sprays are now available that will surpass this range. Plus, you can find pepper sprays in the form of a keychain, a pen, and many other small devices, unlike the huge canister you'd have to carry around if you opted to go with wasp spray.
With pepper spray, you're getting legal and reliable stopping power. There is simply no reason to trust your safety to something meant to stop wasps. The US Customs and Border Protection Agency, the United States' largest user of chemical agents such as pepper spray, does not recommend the use of wasp spray for this off-label use. Neither do the top 8 manufacturers of wasp sprays. On the other hand, pepper spray is legal in all 50 states, its effects on humans are known, and it has been used by police and military forces across the world for more than two decades.

When a thief breaks into a home, they're after cash, electronics, jewelry, guns, and anything else with financial value. This should not come as a surprise. But you'd probably be surprised to learn what else a thief might be after. In fact, some thieves might even be after your trash?
Sound surprising? Consider what your trash might contain. It's not just food wrappers and used tissues. Why is your trash is so important to the everyday home thief? Thieves who go through your home aren't just after your valuables. These are certainly important, but they're also after the most important thing in your life: your identity.
Going through your trash is about the inextricable link between home invasions and identity theft. Learning more about this problem may be very important to the well-being of not only your house, but your own personal safety. Home thieves are smart. They're not simply desperate—in fact, most aren't desperate at all. They know what to look for and what not to look for. Besides financially valuable belongings, they'll also look for passports, bank statements, credit cards – anything that could be used by an identity thief.
You may have heard about the growing problem of identity theft, without linking it to home invasion robberies. But in fact these criminals are an increasingly important source of the information used by identity thieves. You might think that most identities that are stolen are gotten from banks and other high-profile security breaches, but in fact a home robbery provides a veritable treasure trove of information for the enterprising thief. Even if they're not up to the task of using the information to steal your identity, there is a growing black market demand for this information. Computers are particularly high on the thief's target list. Not only are they financially valuable, but often they contain bank account information, passwords, and other details that can be sold to a hacker or identity thief.
While these items might be targeted by a thief who's already inside your home, your trash is even targeted by thieves when it's out by the curb on garbage pickup day. When a thief goes through your trash, that thief's effectively casing your house to prepare for a textbook robbery by sifting through all the garbage and finding all the stuff you throw out that you take for granted: receipts, old bills, deposit slips, letters, and bank statements. There's plenty in your trash that a thief can gather to learn everything they can about what might be inside your house that's worth stealing. If you're not careful about what you throw away, the items in your trash may even themselves be sold to identity thieves. To avoid this possibility, shred all the documents you intend to throw out and be very aware of what your trash may say about you.
All of this points to how important it is to protect all of your belongings, even if you don't think thieves will target them. This includes everything from the stack of bills on your desk to the contents of your trash can. If a thief gets his or her hands on any of your personal information, your identity is potentially compromised. The bottom line is to protect your home and your life by investing in the highest quality home security products. The best way to prevent a thief from stealing your identity is to stop them from getting inside.

We've all experienced that moment of panic when we realize we've lost our wallet or keys. Maybe you were lucky enough to recover them within a few minutes, or maybe you've had the distressful experience of never finding them again. This feeling is akin to our world falling apart.
Losing things is part of being human, for sure. But what if the keys to your house and vehicle were to fall into the wrong hands? Or, worse yet, an entire wallet full of IDs, credit cards, and other personal information. Because this information is so powerful – not only within your daily life, but also to an identity thief – you must take the necessary precautions to avoid losing these critical belongings.
The key is prevention. The first step is to always keep these items in the same place to avoid misplacing them. Some advise you to keep such items together as a group, so that you only have to search for one group instead of several items. You may even want to chain them together so that neither become lost. Others, meanwhile, caution you to keep these items in separate pockets, so that if one is stolen you don't also run the risk of having everything of value to you being stolen at the same moment.
Always be aware of where your belongings are, whether they are in your pocket or you've taken your wallet out to pay for a purchase. It often happens that you misplace your wallet in the bench of the park or the table of the restaurant you have just visited. By the time you recognize that you have not recovered your wallet, it may have vanished for good.
The second step is also simple: keep your wallet and keys on your person at all times. Do not set your purse in a shopping cart or tuck it under the table in a restaurant, and then walk away from it. While the increasing risk of having a wallet stolen can happen anywhere, but it's much more likely when you're out and about in a crowded store or restaurant.
It is especially important to protect these belongings when you're unsure of the safety of your location. For example, if you're traveling, walking alone at night, or in an unfamiliar area of town, keep your belongings close. Also pay particular attention to how you're advertising your worth. Do you open your wallet to reveal a wad of bills every time you pay for a coffee? Are you walking down the street playing with the buttons on your fancy new cell phone? Both of these activities can make you more of a target for pickpockets and other thieves with their eye on your belongings.
Finally, consider how easy it would be for a thief to grab your wallet or keys, even if you know right where they are. Is your wallet clearly visible in your pants pocket? Do your keys dangle from your bag? A thief would be able to snatch both easily before you even know what's happening. Conceal these items from view to minimize the threat of theft. Consider carrying pepper spray or a similar self defense product, which can help you fend off any attacker, whether they're after your wallet or are staging a violent attack.

No matter where you live, your home is a potential target for enterprising thieves. You don't have to live in a bad neighborhood to be the victim of burglary, but far too many families do nothing to prepare themselves, and their property, to confront this threat. In fact, many common home security myths and misconceptions may be standing between your family and safety.
1. A False Sense of Security.
As mentioned above, it doesn't necessarily matter where you live or how many people are usually around your home. Potential burglars will find a way around neighbors or high-traffic roads. Any home is a potential target, even those in quiet suburban neighborhoods. If you've ever watched the news, you've probably heard victims of crime exclaiming that they though it would never happen to them, or in their neighborhood, or even to anyone they knew.
2. Security Systems
There are a few myths that go along with security systems. Some people don't want to purchase a security system because they assume that the cost is too high, or that the system won't actually prevent thieves from breaking into their home. Actually, security alarms and related devices are a cost-effective and essential strategy to keeping burglars at bay. However, while security systems can deter criminals, those alarms are not necessarily a complete preventative. After all, banks certainly have powerful security systems, yet occasionally, even they get robbed. Security systems are a great first step, but these alarms shouldn't be your only step towards home security.
3. Relying on Guard Dogs
Animals can also be a great deterrent, but even well trained animals can be bribed with food and treats. Whatever animal you have, be it a burly Doberman or a Rottweiler, you can't rely on your animal from preventing thieves from victimizing you. Be sure to install several electronic devices - whether a surveillance camera or a door alarm, or even an electronic 'dog bark alarm' – to protect you even when your guard dog is asleep or eating.
4. A Safe is Safe
Safes are a great tool to use as well, but there is no guarantee that a burglar won't be able to crack a safe. Some safes are small enough that a burglar might just decide to take the whole unit with them. While safes can be a great investment, consult with professionals and make sure the safe is in a concealed location. Or, opt for a diversion safe – shaped like an ordinary household object – to reduce the possibility that a burglar will focus his attention on your safe.
5. The Good Neighbor
Even if you have vigilant or nosy neighbors, there is no guarantee that they will see or report any suspicious behavior. Professional thieves are savvy enough to keep an eye on your activities as well as the activities of your neighbors. Though forming a 'neighborhood watch' group can be an effective way of banding together to stop criminal activities or mischief in your community, it's also important to take responsibility for your own safety and security, rather than relying on others to see and stop the problem.
So what's the moral of this story? If you want to keep your home safe you should be aware that you'll need to take advantage of several different security precautions. As the adage goes: "Don't put all your eggs in one basket." Keep your belongings out of sight when not in use and make sure your valuables are insured. Install several different security devices to reduce the possibility of being targeted by a thief.

A safety-conscious homeowner installs smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and door alarms throughout the house. While such devices are certainly important when it comes to ensuring the safety and security of everyone in the home, such efforts are not enough to protect your family from these "silent dangers" lurking in nearly every home. These problems can cause health issues for your family members. Some of which slowly build up over time, others are more sudden, but all should concern every homeowner. Here are the top 5 silent dangers present in your home:
Unintentional Poisoning
Poisoning is a leading cause of children's deaths in the home. Kids can get into everything, and that means the fertilizer in the garage, the bleach in the laundry room, and the window cleaner you keep under the sink. Lock these products on a high shelf, and use cabinet locks on any cabinets containing harmful or potentially toxic substances.
Mold
Though many types of mold are harmless, some grow in the walls and ceilings of a home, producing toxins that have been linked to upper respiratory problems. If your family has been coughing or wheezing a lot, the culprit may be a fungus known as 'black mold.' If you think your home may have mold issues, contact a mold specialist before trying to get rid of the problem on your own. You may have to evacuate in order to have experts clear your residence of toxic mold.
Lead Paint
Another issue that has been in the news lately is that of lead paint. While lead paint is found on everything from glassware to toys, it was also once a popular additive in the paint used on walls. Though no longer used, older homes may still have layers of this paint, which incorporated iron for increased durability and brighter colors. Today, lead exposure is known to cause health problems, particularly in children. Lead chips or dust from old paint can cause organ damage and permanent developmental problems. A specialist can help you seal the lead so that it does not chip off, or remove it from the home completely.
Carbon Monoxide
Household chemicals, mold, and paint aren't the only harmful substances in your home. Unlike the others, carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless. It can be deadly, and is termed the 'silent killer' because those whose homes have a carbon monoxide leak may not know it until it's too late. Therefore, it's important for you to learn about the dangers of this gas, and install carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include nausea, confusion, and dizziness. The most common sources of carbon monoxide poisoning in the home come from power sources such as car engines, gas ranges, wood stoves, gas and oil furnaces, fireplaces, and hot water heaters.
Indoor Air Pollution
Most people assume that air pollution only happens outdoors, in big cities. In fact, most homes have shockingly high levels of chemicals in the air. These include carbon monoxide as well as formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, and Radon. Their sources are varied, and include building materials, glue, cleaning products, and the burning of kerosene or natural gas. Prolonged exposure to such pollutants has been linked to cancer, neurological issues, respiratory illnesses, and even death. To avoid these dangers, use an air purifier, and contact the authorities if you have reason to believe that your family's home contains dangerously high levels of any pollutant.

Everyone's heard of the old adage "Don't Talk to Strangers!". It's tried and true. In fact, you probably remember learning it as a child. If you're now a parent, keep that advice close to heart with your own kids. Of course, it's a very different world out there for children growing up today. Is "don't talk to strangers" enough to protect them? Here are some shocking statistics to absorb:
Of all kidnapping cases, only 24% are committed by strangers. 27% are committed by mere acquaintances. And the highest percentage is kidnapping by family members, believe it or not, with a staggering 49%.
The majority of kidnappings are committed not by strangers, but by people your children may already know. It could be an uncle or aunt, a family friend, or someone who works at a store you frequent. It's a scary thought, but don't be too scared. Because our kids can indeed protect themselves, too. Here's an important list of safety and security tips for your children.
Do not leave with an adult ever, for any reason, without first asking your parents. Set up a code word for your family. If a stranger or acquaintance tries to lure your child closer to his or her car, or tells your child that they have been instructed to pick them up from school, your child should know to ask for the code, and if the person doesn't know the code, to run away and tell an adult.
Speaking of getting help from adults, who should your child trust? Teach them how to seek out trustworthy adults. Even though they shouldn't talk to strangers if unnecessary, children must know when it's okay to find an adult for help.
Do not go into a public bathroom alone. Always ask your mom, dad, uncle, aunt, big brother, big sister, or any other adult that you're with to accompany you.
Walk only on safe routes to school, and do not cut through alleys, vacant lots, or parking lots.
Always ask your parents for approval when someone wants to take your picture, offers you a job, or gives you money or candy. The truth is nothing is free without a consequence. That's probably the best tip to teach your children.
Call your parents regularly with an updated schedule of where you are. This is among the most critical safety tips that you can teach older children and teens. If they don't come home when they're supposed to, and you have no idea where that might be, it'll make it that much harder to find them.
Besides these behavior tips, how else can your kids keep themselves safe? Consider providing them with a cell phone that only calls a limited range of numbers, such as home and 911. Give them a personal alarm so that they can alert adults if they feel threatened. Make it a priority to educate your children on safety and security. They are our future. It's our duty as parents to protect them by helping them protect themselves.

Door alarms and security cameras are certainly valuable home security options, but they shouldn't be the only methods you use to defend your home. Instead, think of home security like an onion, with many layers working together.
Your first step is to keep criminals from viewing your home as a target, and this starts from the street. Does your home look well kept up, with plenty of exterior lighting? Or does it provide plenty of places for criminals to hide, like tall fences and overgrown shrubs, along with windows and doors that look weak, as if they haven't been replaced in decades? A well-kept home with few places for criminals to hide provides the best outer layer of security protection.
The second layer of defense comes as you approach the home. Are their surveillance cameras – or dummy cameras – tucked into the eaves of the home? What about visible deterrents like alarm company signs posted in the windows? Even if a criminal thinks your home might make a good target from the street, having such devices around your home – not just at the front door, but also in all the first-floor windows and side entrances – will do quite a bit to dissuade them.
What if a criminal is brazen enough to try to break in? This is where door and window alarms are essential. Such devices serve to prevent a burglar from coming any further into your home. In fact, as soon as they hear the blaring noise of an alarm, they are likely to turn and run, not wanting to be caught in the act of breaking and entering. Don't forget about locking your doors, too. Far too many still neglect to lock their doors, even though doing so is one of the most basic security measures you can take to protect your property, by creating the first physical barrier for a thief. If you leave the door unlocked, they don't even have to break in to breach your security defenses.
Inside your home, the final layer of security devices is intended to keep a burglar from stealing your most valuable possessions, as well as protecting your family from further harm. Add additional layers of security, such as surveillance cameras or motion detectors, around valuable possessions that can't be hidden, such as expensive electronics. Smaller items such as jewelry, cash, and passports can be hidden in diversion safes. Even if the thief makes it into your home, a safe disguised as an ordinary household object will keep your most valuable possessions safe.
Like peeling an onion, the more layers your home security includes, the longer it'll take the burglar to break through them. All security measures are more effective when used in conjunction with other types of barriers. The type and number of security devices you use will depend on the specific security needs of your home and family. With an array of these devices, would-be thieves become frustrated, improving your odds of not becoming a victim.

How long is the average criminal able to keep up their lifestyle before they are caught by police or killed? Though it's difficult to get criminals to 'fess up to the truth once they've been arrested, there are a few statistics that shed light on just how dangerous this "career" may be.
It appears that the lifespan of a criminal depends in large part on the type of crime they typically commit. Petty thieves, for example, may be able to continue their crimes for much longer than a rapist or murderer. In part this is due to increased police power to hunt for the worst criminals, and in part it's because those who use violence to commit crimes are more likely to be felled by violence themselves.
How many homes can a single criminal burglarize before being caught? According to recent data about home invasions – the type of burglary that most homeowners fear most – the average criminal is able to break into a handful of homes, perhaps five or six, before being caught. Though if you're a victim of such a crime you certainly hope the thief is caught immediately, the evidence shows that it may take a while. Still, the vast majority of such criminals are caught eventually, no matter how careful they are to only target homes with minimal security defenses.
Those who use violence – especially if it involves a gun or a knife – are more likely to be killed in the process of committing a crime. A victim might use the attacker's weapon against them, or be holding a weapon of their own. According to one statistic, the average life span for a violent criminal is just three years from the beginning of their career until their death. Some say that the longest living violent criminals last just five to seven years after beginning this lifestyle. Whether they're caught by police or felled by violence while committing a crime, these criminals will be off the streets very quickly.
With this knowledge, why would anyone get into this lifestyle? Though this point seems obvious, the preponderance of this lifestyle, as evidenced by rising crime rates across the nation, shows that it remains alluring despite the immense danger. The 'bad guys' might be glamorized by Hollywood, but in fact this is a risky lifestyle.
Much of the research into the lifespan of criminals has focused on gang members. These criminals typically start off with petty crimes, such as shoplifting, but quickly progress into more significant or violent crimes, increasing the danger. This is a violent and dangerous business, where guns are an everyday reality. Teens and, increasingly even younger children, become part of the gang lifestyle earlier, dramatically increasing the possibility that they will be killed by violence at a young age. The average gang member lives to be just 20 years and 5 months old. With the average US life expectancy at 78 years, gang members can expect to live just over a quarter of this.

Perhaps you've heard about criminals who dress up as repair workers or delivery drivers as a ruse to get unsuspecting homeowners to open their door. Today's criminals are getting even more tricky, and have come up with a wide range of scenarios to entice you to let them inside. Here are 3 of the newest and most unusual tricks criminals are using for their robberies:
1) Egg in your face.
You're driving along a quiet and peaceful road when suddenly an egg hits your front windshield. After a moment of sitting there stunned, you flip on your windshield wipers, which just serve to spread the sticky mess across the glass. Especially if it's night, you'll be unable to see the road ahead of the car. You'll probably pull over to the side of the road to take a look and try to clean it off so that you can continue on your way.
That's what the criminal is waiting for. No sooner do you get out of a car than a criminal or a group surrounds you with a physical attack, stealing your belongings, or both. This new trick is an update on another method criminals have been using for years, that is, to use their car to cause a fender bender, forcing their target to pull to the side of the road.
2) Avoid shortcuts.
This is a surprising new mode of attack that has been happening worldwide over the past few years. The criminal group may put up detour signs, or bribe cab drivers to divert unwitting victims to a pre-determined location. The victims are diverted to a deserted area, where, like the scenario above, they are attacked. In one recent attack in Chennai, India, the criminals even forced one of the victims to the nearest ATM to withdraw money from the victims' accounts; it is only after this that they were freed.
The moral of this story is that you're always safest in areas that you know well, that are well-lit with lots of people around. Don't trust strangers to direct you to the right place; you never know what ulterior motives they may have.
3) Saving a child may risk your own life.
This ploy has taken several forms. In one, the criminals plant a baby's carseat near the side of the road with a doll in it, hoping that those driving by will notice it and stop to help, at which point they are attacked. In another version, a tape of a baby crying is played outside the front door of the victim's hoe. When they open the door to investigate the sound, the criminal forces their way inside the home. Both of these tactics have fooled many people, especially women, by tugging at their heartstrings. To avoid this attack, always remain cautious, especially if someone is trying to gain your sympathy.
What can you do to avoid such tricks? First, realize that criminal tactics are always evolving. Just because you haven't heard of a certain ploy doesn't mean that criminals won't try it on you. Always remain vigilant and suspicious of unusual situations, and carry pepper spray, a stun gun, or another self defense device to protect you in case you find yourself in the middle of one of these dangerous scenarios.
