If you enjoy jogging, hiking, camping, or other outdoor activities, you may occasionally be confronted by pet dogs or even wild animals. If you are afraid of such attacks in the wilderness, or even on jogging trails or other suburban areas, consider the following ways to defend yourself against such attacks.
First, do not do anything to attract such animals. Don't carry food with you; if you are camping, keep it in closed containers that cannot be broken into by animals such as bears. Still, there are stories in the news nearly every week about people or pets being attacked by pet dogs; the point is, you never know what could happen, even if you're just going on a walk around the block with your dog on a leash.
In all cases of animal attacks, your best course of action is to avoid confrontation altogether. Try not to be alone in the wilderness, especially at night. If you do see an animal, stay away. Do not approach it for any reason, including trying to take pictures or scaring it away from your belongings. Instead, turn and go the other way. If you see a dog while jogging or taking yours for a walk, never pet it or talk to it. Any wildlife you see should be left undisturbed.
If you come near larger wild animals such as bears, be careful if trying to use regular pepper spray against them. You need to be using specially formulated (and large canisters of) bear attack deterrent spray. Similarly, Stun guns, TASER devices and similar methods will have a completely unpredictable effect on wild animals. Even if you are carrying a gun with you, do not try to shoot at the animal. These methods will likely be ineffective, but may irritate the animal and make them even more aggressive. Though some hunters have used pepper spray to stop an attacking bear, this is not a reliable method. Your best course of action is to avoid contact with a bear in the first place, and leave the area if you do spot a bear.
Pepper spray is often a reliable means of self-defense against dogs and other relatively small animals, such as wolves or coyotes. Though there are some spray types made specifically for animals, regular pepper spray is non-lethal, even against small animals, unlike other weapons like stun guns or firearms. Plus, you do not need to be very close to the animal in order for it to work, which is definitely a benefit when dealing with wild animals, especially those that could be carrying rabies or other diseases. Pepper spray can be an effective defense against aggressive dogs. If an animal is trying to attract you, one quick spray from the pepper spray canister will be enough to deter him.
Pepper spray can easily be carried with you, even if you are jogging or camping. Small canisters can be found in nearly any form, including types on keychains or other devices. These devices make a sensible investment for hunters, campers, hikers, joggers, or anyone else who finds themselves outdoors frequently. These simple products are well worth carrying with you to ensure your safety.

How do you know if there are sex offenders living next door? Every day there are stories of sex offenders in the news, but few people realize that convicted sex offenders may actually live in their neighborhood. You may assume that you'd need to be notified if this was the case, but in actuality, you may never find out that there's a sex offender living next door to your young children. Some say that today's parents are too overprotective, and while some may be, there are still some things every parents should know in order to protect their children. It's always a good idea to know of any criminals living nearby, even if your children know not to talk to strangers.
How well do you really know your neighbors? How many times have watched a news story where you heard their neighbor say "He seemed like such a nice, quiet guy. I can't believe he would do something like this". Sound familiar? The only way to know for sure about sex offenders is to check the national sex offender list. Find the sex offenders in your neighborhood now, before it is too late.
A sex offender is someone who has been criminally charged with, and convicted of, a crime of a sexual nature against a victim. Crimes for which registration as a sex offender is required range from sexual assault to possession of child pornography. There are over 500,000 registered sex offenders in the United States, with over half of the victims being under 12 years old. You should be concerned for your family's safety when you consider these shocking statistics.
Fortunately, there is a way to know if you are living near a registered sex offender. In order to find sex offenders, start with the government's free search. Sex offenders are required by law to register their address with the government. Each of the 50 states has an online registry website that is free to search. It will pinpoint sex offenders on a map of your area. You may find that there are sex offenders living right on your street, perhaps less than a block from your home. These search results show the offender's address, crime, and usually a photo.
In addition to searching for sex offenders living near you, you can also use the government's free search to look up the names of new neighbors, potential babysitters, or anyone else whose full name you know. The truth is that you never know if someone you've met is a sex offender unless you look for their name in the national search. Although you probably don't want to think about the possibility of sex offenders interacting with you and your family, the possibility is there.
Whether you find sex offenders living in your neighborhood or not, it is crucial to remind your family members that anyone they meet could potentially be dangerous. Although it's now easier than ever to find sex offenders if you know where to look, the absence of registered sex offenders does not mean that everyone in your neighborhood is harmless. The sex offender registry is just one tool in your arsenal, helping to keep you and your family safe from harm.

Though the idea of defending oneself physically has been around since nearly the dawn of time, organized law enforcement is a relatively new idea. As self defense evolved, it became defined by several disciplined forms, such as martial arts.
Though it is an excellent idea for everyone to be trained in some form of physical self defense, and to carry self defense products like stun guns or pepper spray to defend themselves against any violent or dangerous situation, of course today there are also organized law enforcement agencies which exist to make self defense less necessary. Though it is still imperative to do what you can to protect yourself, various organizations, from a neighborhood watch to a police officer who frequently patrols your neighborhood, can keep your home and your family safe.
The first law enforcement agencies existed not so much to protect citizens from criminals but to maintain leadership. Forces to maintain the status quo existed as far back as ancient Egypt, when pharaohs had their own personal staff of soldiers. Nearly any society throughout history with a military hierarchy has had some form of law enforcement agency. The Roman Empire is frequently noted for its effective yet brutal form of law enforcement. In Europe, law enforcement policies can be traced back to more than a millennium ago.
London is thought to be the first city to hire paid law enforcement officers, back in 1663. These officers were mainly meant to find and detain criminals after the fact. In 1800, Glasgow, Scotland, established the first professional police department tasked with preventive policing. The first civil (rather than military) police force was established in the United Kingdom by Parliament in 1829. This model is used by numerous countries, including the United States, to the present day. Throughout the mid-1800s, several police departments were founded around the world.
Within the United States, the early years can be described as somewhat lawless. Stronger members of the communities were responsible for policing themselves and their neighbors, though there was no police structure in place. Once the colonists were settled in, the task of maintaining order fell to Justices of the Peace, who were responsible for dealing with criminal elements. As the towns and cities of the New World grew, it became clear that this system was simply not organized enough. Organized law enforcement can be traced back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when night watch forces were established throughout the colonies.
Philadelphia finally organized an independent police squad in 1833, policing the area 24/7. Another early full-time police force in the United States was the Boston Police Department, established in 1839. New York's police force was established in 1844. Though these organizations worked well in the relatively well established Eastern cities, in the frontier towns, a sheriff system developed. This system, also inherited from England, placed a sheriff selected by the local population in charge of law enforcement. Relatively unregulated in early times, the sheriff system still exists to this day, though on a much more formal basis.
Today, law enforcement agencies worldwide are highly specialized organizations with extensive training to prepare officers for an astounding variety of situations. Still, they can't be there for all situations, which is why it is important to protect yourself with a stun gun, baton, or pepper spray canister.

If you find yourself being assaulted, and you are forced to defend yourself against an attacker, there will always be consequences of some sort. Many people forget to think about the potential aftermath before they are attacked. The aftermath of a self defense situation can often be nearly as scary as the assault itself. You will rarely be able to walk away from a violent encounter as if it never happened. Here are a few of the possible consequences for which you should mentally prepare yourself:
An Adrenaline Rush - You can expect that during and immediately following the assault, you will have a rush of adrenaline. This can result in a condition known as Tachypsychia, with effects such as time distortion, memory distortion, or memory loss. You will probably feel 'wired' and shaky as a result of the adrenaline. Your mind will still be producing fear even after the danger is over. While there's nothing you can do to stop this rush of adrenaline or its effects, being prepared mentally can help you deal with it. Some victims of violence also find that going running to use up their adrenaline can help their body calm down following a scary confrontation.
Dealing With the Law - Even when acting in self defense, you can expect the police to become involved anytime you use a stun gun, pepper spray, TASER device, or any other self defense product. You will probably be expected to give a statement about the events. Be objective, and try to remain calm when talking to police. Using violence to defend yourself against an attack is legal, but the police will still be interested in hearing what happened, especially if the situation warrants charges against your attacker. You may also want to inquire about victims' counseling or other programs that may be available to you as the victim of a violent assault.
Property Damage - Depending on the type of assault, you may have additional consequences in terms of damage to your property. For example, a burglar may have broken a window to get inside your house. Your purse, with your credit cards inside, may have been stolen during the attack. You'll need to repair the damage, cancel your credit cards, and report any missing possessions to your insurance company.
Feeling Secure Again - Once you have been attacked, it can take some time to become comfortable continuing your daily routine. You may find yourself looking over your shoulder more than usual, wondering if you could be attacked again. Being attacked can make you aware of the possibilities, and that can be very scary.
Many victims of crime find themselves compelled to install additional locks and other security measures at home, or to carry pepper spray, stun guns, or other devices, especially if they did not do so before the attack. You may worry that your attacker will come back for revenge, or simply realize how unprotected and vulnerable you were. No matter the reason, taking steps to protect your safety is important, whether or not you have experienced a violent altercation.

Today's self defense devices come in a wide range of type and shapes. One important question many have is how easy these devices are to aim. These devices have very large target areas, and are surprisingly easy to use effectively. Here are the effective target zones of three types of popular self defense products:
Pepper Spray
The pepper spray canister should be aimed directly at the attacker's eyes and face. The formulation of pepper spray you have chosen will affect the required accuracy of your aim. Some sprays come out in a thick stream, while others distribute the spray in a fine mist or fog across a wider area. Try to stand upwind of your attacker, and take the wind into account when aiming. A one-second burst of pepper spray is enough to disable nearly any attacker.
Stun Gun
A stun gun must be applied directly to your attacker's body. The electrical charge of a stun gun will pass through about two inches of clothing, such as a heavy sweatshirt or jacket. You need not worry about coming into direct contact with skin.
The stun gun should be held against your attacker for as long as possible- three to five seconds should be enough to disable any assailant. It may take slightly longer if your attacker is very large or is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Most experts advise to keep the stun gun pressed against the target for as long as possible, or until your attacker falls to the ground.
For the best result, aim at the torso. Not only is it the largest target area, but it will also cause a more immediate reaction than contact with the extremities, such as a hand or leg. Soft muscle groups such as the groin, neck, or kidney area can also be particularly effective. If you must contact an extremity, aim for the elbow, face, or femur, as these areas tend to have more nerve endings.
TASER Device
A TASER device is most often used at a distance, in contrast with stun guns, which are designed to be used when very close to the assailant. TASER devices use nitrogen cartridges to fire electrical probes at an attacker. Both probes must come into contact with clothing or skin. Like a stun gun, the electrical current of a TASER device can also pass through thick clothing. The best target for a TASER device is the torso, which provides you with the largest surface area.
The probes must hit the body at least four to six inches apart. This requires standing a few feet from your attacker. The two probes separate from each other more the further back you stand. The ideal range of most TASER devices is between seven and ten feet, at which point the probes should hit the body about sixteen inches apart.
If only one of the probes manages to hit your attacker, some electrical current will still flow into his body, though it probably won't be as fast-acting as if both probes had hit their target. If you miss with both probes, the TASER can also be used up close, as a stun gun, even if you've already used up the nitrogen cartridge.

If you're considering carrying pepper spray for self defense purposes, the first question most people ask is whether they should buy MACE or pepper spray. In reality, they are one and the same. MACE is simply a brand name of pepper spray.
When choosing pepper spray, you'll want to look for the most effective version you can find. Those with a finer mist are usually more effective than those with a larger spray. Some will shoot in a line, while others blanket a larger area. These might be a better choice if you are worried about your aim, since it must be sprayed directly into your attacker's fact in order to be effective. Some are more of a foam than a liquid; these are more effective on windy days than liquids which may blow in the wind.
The most effective pepper spray has a high concentration of oleoresin capsicum or other active ingredients. Usually, anywhere from 3-5 percent is ideal; higher concentrations will be too thick to spray correctly, while lower concentrations are too weak. There are some exceptions; if a ten percent solution is mixed correctly, it can be quite effective. The heat of a pepper spray is measured in SHU, or Scoville heat units. The higher this number, the more intensely the pepper spray will burn.
Choose a spray canister with a large effective range. Some small canisters only work within three feet of your attacker; others will work from nearly 20 feet away. Obviously the latter type is beneficial, as you do not need to be very close to an attacker in order for the spray to be effective.
Other features you may want to look for in pepper spray include a safety latch to prevent accidental spray or belt loops for easy carrying. Some pepper sprays are mixed with UV dye, so that your attacker can later be identified under a blacklight.
Finally, consider the canister shape and size. If you plan to carry it in a purse or pocket, choose a portable canister, such as a one-ounce pepper spray keychain. Larger canisters can be kept in your home or another location. Pepper spray should not be routinely stored in vehicles, especially during cold or hot seasons, because it is possible for the can to burst in extreme temperatures. Larger cans will hold more one-second bursts, though even the smallest canisters should hold enough to temporarily disable any attacker. Some sprays are concealed and disguised to look like a pen, lipstick tube, or other common object. You may feel more comfortable carrying these in your purse than an aerosol spray can of pepper spray. You can even buy a pepper spray ring that fits on your finger and will spray pepper spray up to three feet away.
Before purchasing pepper spray, be sure you know all of the applicable local laws. Pepper spray is legal in all 50 states, though some restrictions may apply. For example, many places only allow pepper spray to be sold by licensed firearms dealers or online. Some states also require a permit or classes before owning pepper spray. If you have any doubts, call your local police station. Even through pepper spray is as easy to use as a spray paint can, you may want to consider a class to learn valuable self-defense tips.

The value of hands-on training with your pepper spray canister cannot be overemphasized. In order to use the pepper spray as effectively as possible in a self defense situation, you must know how the spray will come out of the can when you discharge it. How will you aim if you don't know what the spray will look like? Although pepper spray is certainly easy to use (just aim and shoot), for best results, practice using pepper spray before the need arises.
In order to use pepper spray in a self defense situation, you should also develop a strategy for using it. Your plan should be rehearsed both mentally and physically. Conduct practice drills in an outdoor environment with a target. If a dangerous situation arises, the less time you have to spend thinking of a plan, the better. If you have already practiced a similar situation, you can have your pepper spray out in less than a second, quickly taking down your attacker.
In addition to training yourself, you can also enroll in a formal training class by a self defense instructor. There, you will learn invaluable self defense tips, including strategies for using your pepper spray. Check with your local police department to find out where you can take training classes to help you become more prepared to defend yourself. While training classes for carrying pepper spray are not required by law, they can be very useful.
The more comfortable you can become in your ability to use pepper spray quickly and effectively, the better. Your preparation can make all of the difference, helping you survive a dangerous confrontation. As with any martial art or self defense method, practice makes perfect. Consider that pepper spray is a self defense weapon, similar to a baton, stun gun, or similar device. Frequent practice can help you learn how to hold and position the pepper spray for maximum effectiveness.
Before carrying pepper spray, read any instructions that accompany the canister you have selected. While reading the instructions, remove the canister from its packaging to inspect the various features discussed and visualize the positions described. You'll need to know where the safety latch is located, as well as the design type of the canister, so that you know how to hold it.
One of the best ways to practice self defense situations is through role playing drills with a partner. Carry an empty canister where you normally would carry pepper spray, such as a purse or pocket. Have your partner grab you from behind. Pull out your pepper spray, and then practice methods to retain control over the device while struggling with your "attacker."
If you wish to practice with an actual canister of pepper spray, always do so outdoors and away from other people. Consider purchasing a second canister specifically for practice purposes. First, practice your draw and aim. You don't want to be fumbling with the canister when you need it. Use a tree or shrub as your target to determine the amount of pressure needed on the trigger and how to aim the device. Begin with light pressure, and take note of the path of the stream. Always spray from upwind, and avoid walking into the path of the spray before giving it time to dissipate. Unfortunately, there is little you can do if you spray yourself accidentally.

Personal alarms are small defensive tools that make good sense for both children and adults. These alarms come in many shapes, including keychains, as well as those integrated onto flashlights or other self defense products. They are useful for scaring away attackers, bringing attention to your situation, and buying you time so that you can use other self defense methods.
Personal alarms have a small switch that, when flipped, emits a loud noise. This is similar to a security alarm that may be located on the wall of a home or business, except that it is not permanently attached to the wall, but may be carried with you at all times. It has been shown that such alarms deter attacks even if no one is nearby, because the attacker is worried about being caught mid-attack. Many personal alarms have a strap that can be pulled away if an attacker grabs the alarm away from you. Once the pin is pulled, the alarm will go off continuously until the pin is replaced. These alarms are very loud, and will confuse your attacker besides making them want to leave the location of the noise.
These alarms are often the best self defense weapon for children, especially younger ones. You may not want them carrying around even non-lethal weapons like a pepper spray, a stun gun, or another weapon, but all they have to do with a personal alarm is press the button. This is an excellent way to keep your children safe without worrying about them hurting themselves with their own self defense weapon. In these cases, a personal safety device can be a great way to help your kids protect themselves whether they are at home, out shopping, or anywhere else.
Personal alarms are also a great choice for many adults, either in addition to or as a replacement for other methods of deterring attackers. They are so easy to use that there is no worry of panicking during an attack. You will be able to react much quicker with a personal alarm than with an unfamiliar self defense device. A loud alarm can give you the time you need to grab your pepper spray or stun gun, and also makes a sensible choice if you do not want to carry such a weapon with you. Many are multi-purpose devices combining an alarm with a flashlight, stun gun, or other device, which comes in handy in the case of an attack.
Many personal alarms come with door or window attachments. As long as the door or window remains closed, the circuit is complete and the alarm will not sound. As soon as it is opened, the alarm will go off, stopping a home invasion or other burglary. Personal alarms are relatively inexpensive, so they can be placed around the home. They can also be kept in desk drawers and other locations within offices or other businesses. Any criminal trying to attack you or the building you are in will be deterred by the loud noise, even if no one is around, because it draws attention to what they are trying to do.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Many people are familiar with the concept of bounty hunters thorough Boba Fett, who appears in the movie "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" to arrest Han Solo, encasing him in carbonite. With the popularity of shows like DOG The Bounty Hunter and the series of books by Janet Evanovich tracing the fictional life of Stephanie Plum, a female bounty hunter, more and more people are wondering what it takes to become a bounty hunter. What exactly does a bounty hunter do?
A bounty hunter's role is to arrest fugitives in return for compensation. Also known as a bail enforcement agent, bail agent, bail officer, or fugitive recovery officer, bounty hunters usually search for those who have failed to show up for a scheduled court date (ie, "skipped bail"). Once they have failed to appear for a court case, the court issues a bench warrant or arrest warrant. At that time, the bail bondsman, who has paid bail money for the defendant to get out of jail while awaiting trial, can either forfeit the money paid or track down the defendant.
The bounty hunter is hired by the bail bondsman to track down these fugitives. In general, no search warrant is required for bail agents or bounty hunters to enter the fugitive's private property. All that is required is a bench warrant issued for the fugitive's arrest.
Today, many are considering becoming a bounty hunter for the income possibilities. If you want to become a professional bounty hunter, first consider the state where you plan to work. There are varying requirements for licensing and training depending on the state. Bounty hunters can work in every state except for Kentucky. Once trained, most new bounty hunters contract with a bail bondsman to track down fugitives. As each fugitive is found and returned to the court, the bounty hunter is paid a commission, either a flat fee or a percentage of the original bail amount.
If you do decide to try your hand at being a bounty hunter, be prepared for what you're getting yourself into. Before you become a bounty hunter, you should be aware that it can be dangerous. You'll be tracing down people who do not want to be caught, and who may not want not go quietly. They may be violent, and they may be armed. Remember, these people have already been arrested once, and they may have served time in jail and be willing to do anything possible so that they don't have to go back. Not only must you defend yourself against potentially violent fugitives, but you must also physically detain them using handcuffs or other methods so that you can bring them to justice.
At the very least, when acting as a bounty hunter you'll need pepper spray, a stun gun, or a TASER device to keep yourself safe and apprehend your target quickly. Today, nearly every professional police department and security company requires guards to carry one of these devices; just because you're on your own as a bounty hunter doesn't mean that you should be any less protected. Other tools popular among bounty hunters include a radio, handcuffs, firearm, and bullet proof vest.

If you are currently weighing your choices for self defense weapons, undoubtedly you have seen various weapons disguised to look like everyday objects. This is particularly popular in the case of pepper spray canisters.
There are, of course, many good reasons to consider carrying a canister of pepper spray, a stun gun, or another weapon to defend yourself against an attacker. Violent crimes are said to occur across the United States at a rate of one every 20 seconds. These could be prevented with a small investment in a pepper spray canister. When choosing such a canister, look for one that you would feel comfortable carrying around. Consider one that does not look like a pepper spray canister at all, giving you the element of surprise even though you're the one being attacked. Disguised weapons hold several advantages over those that are not disguised.
First, you will have the element of surprise. When concealed in an object shaped like a pen or another everyday object, your attacker will not expect the blast of pepper spray. Ordinary pepper spray canisters look exactly like a spray paint can, and will be immediately recognizable to any attacker. Grabbing a regular can of pepper spray gives the attacker time to cover his eyes and face, and will make the shot of pepper spray less effective. Those extra few seconds before he realizes what you are doing are crucial to aiming the pepper spray directly in your attacker's face, where it will blind him long enough for you to get away.
Although this may not be as big of a factor when an attacker is clearly coming after you, it can be invaluable in situations where you may have realize that the person was dangerous after already beginning a conversation, getting into a car, or placing yourself in any other situation where you are likely to get harmed. The person won't realize that when you are reaching for a tube of lipstick, you are really pulling out a can of pepper spray.
Many people, especially women, choose such designs because it makes them feel more comfortable to be carrying such a device. Self defense items can feel awkward to carry around in your purse or pocket if you are not used to them. Carrying an object shaped like a pen or keychain, instead, can help you feel me confident. This is definitely a good thing; after all, you'll need to feel confident enough to use it if you feel you have to.
Disguised pepper spray canisters are often so well done that you can leave them in plain sight. For example, pepper spray disguised as a pager or cell phone with a side clip can be attached to your car visor or your belt loop. Stun guns can even be found in disguised packages such as these. Pepper spray in a pen can be placed innocuously in the center console or cup holder in your car. This way, they will be much easier to grab than fumbling around in your purse or pocket, should you need to get to them quickly.

If you are looking for a self defense product but want something that's a little more hands-on than pepper spray or a stun gun, take a look at self defense batons. A baton is a good choice for those with the physical strength to use it effectively, but they're not for everyone.
In its most basic form, a baton is a blunt stick suitable for close range self defense. Many are telescoping or collapsible so that they can easily be carried with you. They are designed to be carried in a bag or in a pouch connected to your belt; some even come with a belt loop attachment. A fully extended baton allows you to maintain a little more distance from your attacker than if you were unarmed or were carrying a device such as a stun gun for self defense.
Steel batons pack a surprising punch when used against an attacker, but they are much less useful if you pull out your baton only to wonder how, exactly, you are supposed to use it. It does take some knowledge and skill to use a baton correctly. If you've never used a baton for self defense before, you may want to purchase a self defense video to train yourself in its use.
Batons have various uses, from using the baton like a stick to hit your assailant, to stabilizing your first for other physical attacks, to gaining leverage on an assailant's fingers or wrist, particularly when they are trying to grab you. A self defense baton can also be used to apply pressure to sensitive parts of the body. Batons can be quite effective even with simple moves; you don't have to know how to spin the baton around your body or anything fancy like that to be able to use a self defense baton effectively against your attacker.
To use a defense baton, first pull it out of the holster or bag. Make sure that you have a good grip on the handle. Then, flick your wrist to extend the baton to its full length. Now, use it to whack your attacker in the ribs, the kneecap, or the neck. A baton evens the field when you're faced with an attacker who may be bigger or stronger than you are, but your approach must be confident when you're in this threatening situation. You can't poke lightly, but must put your strength, no matter how strong you are, into each move.
A self defense baton can even be useful without ever having to touch your attacker. The impressive appearance of a baton can scare away a potential assailant without you needing to use it. Batons are often carried on the belts of law enforcement officials and security guards as part of their defense arsenal. Even if you never have to pull out the baton, it has done its duty in preventing attacks simply by being visible. A telescoping baton is also an effective self defense tool for use against animal attacks. If you are confident in your strength, batons can be useful as a more hands-on method of defending yourself.

Senior citizens are at greater risk of medical emergencies, home invasions, and a range of other dangers, especially when they live alone. Elderly people are vulnerable targets for potential attackers. They may also be in failing health, giving rise to the possibility of a fall, heart attack, or other medical emergency. Even when assisted living situations are not required, a few important safety precautions, both with regards to medical emergencies and to prevent violence or robberies, are necessary for senior citizens.
Medical emergencies or threatening encounters can happen anywhere, when traveling, shopping, walking, or even just relaxing. Personal alarms give seniors the freedom to live independently and be comfortable wherever they go, whether in their home or out shopping. They give peace of mind to the friends and relatives of senior citizens and can even save lives.
A personal alarm is a small, battery-operated device that emits an impressively loud beeping noise when activated. This noise serves to draw attention from a wide area. They are designed to bring aid to those in need, especially those who are unable to loudly shout or physically defend themselves. In fact, personal alarms often make a great choice both for the very young and the very old.
Personal alarms are about the size of a remote garage door opener. They can be worn on a wristband or belt clip, or as a pendant or keychain. These portable devices are easily carried anywhere, in or out of the home. Many styles are even waterproof. Thanks to their low cost, personal alarms can be placed in convenient locations around the home. Because they are wireless, they can be placed anywhere. These alarms won't be easily noticed by anyone who's not looking for them, but the second they are needed, they are easily accessible. Many double as door or window alarms to get seniors the help they need when someone is trying to break in. Many self defense products, such as pepper spray canisters or stun guns, also come with personal alarms if the elderly person in your life wants a more hands-on way to protect themselves in addition to the alarm feature.
If a potentially dangerous person approaches, simply activate the personal alarm. The blaring noise will not only draw the attention of bystanders, but it is also likely to make the potential attacker turn and run. No attacker wants to be caught in the act. This device is also invaluable in the case of a medical emergency or other situation in which the immediate attention of others is required. Also known as a 'panic button,' all that is needed to activate the alarm is to press the button, immediately calling for help with an audible alarm of approximately 130 decibels.
No matter how active or healthy, aging seniors can fall victim to a wide range of emergency situations. It is wise to prepare for such occurrences with convenient personal alarms that can summon help when it is needed most. Don't wait for an accident or attack before you protect aging loved ones with personal alarms. These invaluable devices provide security, peace of mind, freedom, and independence, acting as a lifeline that could save someone you love during a frightening emergency.

It is very common for people to purchase stun guns for self defense, but have no idea what to do when they need to use it. Stun guns are very effective when used properly, but you must know how to use them if you plan to defend yourself with one. Knowing how to use it will also give you the confidence to use it when you need to.
When you purchase your stun gun, read the brochure or directions and learn about the features included on the model you have chosen. Most are straight or curved, with a grip and trigger like a gun. This style should be held as you would hold a handgun. Others, however, look more like a cell phone or a pager. You don't want to be caught fumbling with your stun gun, trying to figure out how to turn it on. Besides turning it on, you'll also need to turn off the safety switch, which prevents you from shocking yourself with the stun gun.
Next, learn how a stun gun works. The stun gun disables your attacker by sending an electrical pulse through the body, disabling muscle control. In order to be effective, the stun gun must be touching your attacker while you press the button. There are two prongs at the end of the stun gun through which the current flows. Both must be pressed to your attacker's body. It takes two to five seconds, depending on the voltage, to disable the attacker. For best results, the stun gun should come into contact with the torso, rather than the extremities.
When practicing, be sure that no part of your body, including your fingers, is anywhere near the stun gun's contact probes after you turn off the safety switch. Practice pulling the stun gun out of your pocket or purse and moving the safety switch on and off quickly. Doing so will enable you to use the stun gun quickly and effectively during a self defense situation.
To see what the charge looks like, turn the stun gun on. Your stun gun will emit a crackling noise, and blue sparks will fly between the two prongs. Never practice with a live stun gun on anyone. Police often undergo this unforgettable experience during training; and say that "anyone who has experienced the jolt of a stun gun will remember it forever." This device causes excruciating pain, and should never be used except in an actual self defense situation.
If you have a TASER device, you should practice shooting the probes at a target about five to ten feet away from you, such as a bush. The probes of a TASER device should be at least six inches apart from each other, but both should land on your attacker's body.
You can also practice potential self defense scenarios with a partner, as long as the safety latch is on. Using the stun gun on an attacker must be second nature. Have your partner "attack" you from behind and try to wrestle the stun gun away from your grip. With the safety switch on, practice connecting the stun gun with your partner's body before they are able to get the stun gun away from you.

Article Title: Avoiding Teen Dating Violence

If you are the parent of a teen, an unfortunate reality that you need to take the time to consider is teen dating violence. Though you may assume that your teenager is too young to be facing these kinds of issues, the fact is that teen dating violence is becoming more and more common every day. In fact, a recent study found that nearly a third of teens report being worried about their physical safety while in a relationship, and over half admitted to compromising their values to please their partner. According to another study, over half of today's teens experience dating violence during their teenage years.
What can you do about it? First of all, make sure that your teen is aware of these possibilities. Yes, it will be a difficult conversation, but like many conversations you'll be having with your teen, it is a necessary one. Many teens will not know how to recognize the signs of dating violence. They may feel pressured to have and stay in relationships, especially if they consider it a "serious" one. Peer pressure may make them stay in controlling or even violent relationships, especially when dating someone considered "cool" by their friends.
Whether you have a teenage son or daughter, you must make them realize that abusive behaviors are not normal. Jealousy, possessiveness, and abuse have no place in relationships at any age. Physical aggression is not necessary from boys, and girls can and should stand up for themselves. Your children must know that there are resources for help. Educating your teenage children can help them avoid dating violence and abuse. So can building your children's self esteem from a young age, instilling in them an attitude that they are worthy of being treated well by their friends and partners.
Teach your children how to watch for dangerous situations, both when they are on dates and in any other situation they encounter. Many teenagers naively believe that they are invincible and don't have to watch out for bad people. Remind them that not everyone they meet can be trusted, and dating violence can happen to anyone, in any relationship. Dating violence can even develop long-term in their relationships, which is something that many teens do not realize. There are many early signs of dating violence, but these will only be caught if your teen knows what to look for.
Set standards for teenage dating. For example, allow younger teens only on double dates or group dates. Always know the plans and who your children are with. Trust them, but always verify the details. It is your responsibility to protect your children, not to always let them do anything they want with anyone. Make your teenager's safety your top priority.
Simple knowledge may not go far enough. What can your teen do when faced with real-life situations ranging from date rape to an abusive boyfriend to someone approaching them in a parking lot? Prepare your teenagers by giving them a keychain pepper spray canister or a pepper spray pen, both inconspicuous yet effective ways of stopping any violent situation they may encounter, whether on a date, at a party, at the mall, or anywhere else.

If you watch the news, you've surely heard about kidnappings where children are taken right from their own bedrooms. As a parent, you must take steps to protect your children from kidnappers, burglars, and anyone else who may be prowling around your home, whether you are at home or your children are home alone. While you always want to think that you'll be there for your children when they need to, the unfortunate reality is that you must prepare them to deal with emergency situations or dangerous people by themselves.
Your children may be home alone after school until you arrive home from work. These "latchkey kids" may be old enough to take care of themselves on an ordinary afternoon, but what happens if someone tries to break in? Although they are probably safer during daylight than being left alone at night, you still must take steps to protect your home. Install alarms on doors and windows, and make the exterior of your home unattractive to criminals. Do a thorough inspection of your home to look for potential safety risks.
If your children will be left home alone at any time, leave a list of emergency phone numbers beside the phone, and enter these numbers into their cell phone, if they have one. Teach your children not to open the door to strangers or answer the phone when home alone. Discuss any scenario you can think of that may occur when they are home alone, and instruct them what to do if it occurs. Whether your child will be spending time alone at home or not, have a family emergency plan for any type of emergencies. For example, what should they do if an earthquake occurs when they are home alone? Where will the family meet if the home becomes unsafe? Practice these plans, even if it seems silly.
At night, you need to be especially vigilant about protecting your children's safety as they are sound asleep in their beds. If you don't have a whole-house alarm system, install door and window alarms on their windows to keep anyone from breaking in while you're asleep down the hall. In fact, this is even an important home security device if you don't have children. This can alert you to anyone trying to break into their room, and is also helpful in telling you when young children may be up and moving about the home in the middle of the night. A night light can help reassure children who are afraid of the dark, and is also an important safety feature to prevent falls during the night.
Whether your child is in bed, home alone, or out in the world by themselves, arm them with a personal alarm. This can alert adults near them if a dangerous person approaches your child. Whether they are in your home, at school, at the skate park or at the mall, a personal alarm will emit a very loud noise, scaring away anyone who may be bothering them and drawing an adult's attention to the situation. Depending on the age of your children, you may also want to give them a cell phone to take with them when they leave the home. As your children grow older, you may want to arm them with a keychain pepper spray canister or another self defense product to help them defend themselves against kidnappers or other attackers.
Whether your children are ever home alone or not, the unfortunate reality is that at some point in their young lives, they may be confronted by a kidnapper, burglar, or other criminal. To avoid this possibility, make your home as secure as possible, and teach your children what to do in dangerous or emergency situations.

The idea of using hot pepper to protect against one's enemies has been around for centuries. Today, defensive sprays based on the chemicals in hot peppers are some of the most popular self defense products on the market. Pepper sprays incorporate oleoresin capsicum, the chemical that makes hot peppers so hot, and can incapacitate any assailant for fifteen minutes or more. Modern pepper sprays are used by security and military forces, law enforcement agencies, and private citizens all over the world. Here are the most popular pepper sprays for self defense use:
MACE is perhaps the most recognizable brand of pepper spray. Most MACE formulations contain about ten percent concentrations of OC, one of the highest levels commercially available. Since the 1980s, MACE has manufactured a wide selection of self defense sprays, including pepper spray canisters with UV dye to mark your attacker, in addition to pepper guns and pepper gels, advanced dispersion methods designed to make their pepper spray even more effective. MACE also produced bear and dog repellants formulated specifically to fight back against animal attacks.
Pepper Shot pepper sprays, also with a ten percent concentration of OC, comes in 1/2 ounce to two ounce containers, making it easy to carry pepper spray with you everywhere. Canister types include keychains, disguised pepper spray pens, and car visor clips, for the variety of applications in which you might find pepper spray handy. Whether in your car, at work, or walking around outside, you'll be able to protect yourself with Pepper Shot spray.
ASP Defender Sprays are unique forms of pepper spray in low-profile canisters machined from high strength aerospace aluminum. These amazingly lightweight devices are surprisingly heavy-duty and effective. The replaceable aerosol inserts in these devices contain a 10 percent Oleoresin Capsicum solution. Test inserts allow you to test the device in a training environment so that you are fully prepared to use it if necessary.
Streetwise pepper sprays, most of which contain 17 percent concentrations of Oleoresin Capsicum, are among the hottest and most powerful pepper spray formulations currently on the market. In sizes ranging from 1/2 ounce to 1 and a half pounds, as well as pepper spray pens, Streetwise defense sprays can prepare you for anything that comes your way.
Wildfire pepper sprays come in an 18 percent concentration, the highest percentage of Oleoresin Capsicum currently available in self defense sprays. With a rating of 3 million Scoville Heat Units, Wildfire sprays are among the most powerful self defense sprays, quickly taking down any assailant. Wildfire pepper spray canisters come in five sizes, from a 1/2 ounce keychain to a one pound canister perfect for stopping home invasions.
Police Magnum pepper sprays contain UV identifying dye, allowing police to easily identify a suspect once sprayed by the pepper spray. Very effective against any attacker, these sprays are 100% made in the United States, and contain between 12 and 18 percent OC in canister sizes of 1/2 ounce to 1 pound. Magnum also makes pepper spray in keychain and pen forms, as well as fogger and foam pepper sprays to fight against multiple assailants or in windy outdoor conditions.
Defense Tech makes some of the most advanced pepper spray dispersal designs on the market today. Designed for specialized usage, including security or law enforcement use, Defense Tech sprays include stream, fog, and foam aerosol delivery systems. The pepper spray formulations used in Defense Tech sprays include OC as well as synthetic chemicals.

Are you worried about neighborhood crime? It seems like crimes are on the front page of the newspaper almost every day. Whether you live in an urban environment, an isolated rural home, or a new subdivision, crime can happen to your neighborhood. It's too easy to think that crime will never come to your neighborhood. Whether you are afraid to go for a walk in your neighborhood or simply don't want crime to affect your family (and who does!), consider the following ways to stop neighborhood crime.
A proactive approach to stopping crime in your neighborhood is much better than reacting once crimes start happening. A neighborhood watch program is a good way to work to end crime in your neighborhood, and has the added benefit of bringing together the people who live near you. Getting to know your neighbors can help you spot things or people that are out of place right away. You may have seen "neighborhood watch" signs along streets in some neighborhoods, and these can be helpful in deterring criminals by telling them that the homeowners will be watching for their suspicious actions.
Understand what a neighborhood watch does before you start one. Members of the neighborhood watch should not be interrupting a burglary in progress, chasing the criminals, or tracking down perpetrators. A neighborhood watch is not a vigilante organization. Instead, it is an agreement to watch for problems throughout the neighborhood and report them to the police. Your local police will probably be able to help you get one started; after all, these programs make their jobs easier.
Do not be afraid to call the police when you think a crime may be happening in your neighborhood. Perhaps they will even be able to catch the criminal in the act; this is a lot easier than chasing after them days later. Watch the news, and be aware of any crimes that occur nearby so that you can be aware of crimes that may be more likely to happen in your neighborhood. Look for signs of vandalism or drug activity, and know your police department's non-emergency number in case you ever need them for a non-emergency situation. Report anything that seems out of place.
No matter how safe you feel your neighborhood to be, there are a few steps you can take to make your house the one on the block that's least likely to attract criminals. Keep your home well-lit, and your doors and windows locked. Make sure the curtains are closed, especially in any room where expensive electronics and similar possessions are readily visible.
Don't forget to protect you and your loved ones directly through self defense products. Keep at least one can of pepper spray, a stun gun, or another device in your home where it's readily accessible. You can also carry a keychain canister of pepper spray when walking or jogging outdoors, especially at night. No matter what steps you have taken to deter criminals in your neighborhood, make sure that you can still effectively protect yourself and your loved ones from intruders. Even if you live in a "safe" part of town, it is still possible for crimes to affect your neighbors, your family, and yourself.

Did you know that the holiday season can be one of the most dangerous times of year? Although the general spirit is very festive, it is important not to let your guard down. With all of the parties and cheer, the holidays also mean increased danger of everything from home invasion to identity theft. You must be aware of these threats and take steps to diminish them.
First, be aware of the danger of purchasing expensive Christmas gifts alone. As you walk to your car, especially at night, you may be at risk of a mugging or carjacking. Never buy more than you can handle, or turn your back to long to put the gifts in your trunk. Put packages in your trunk, not in the backseat, if you want to avoid returning to a smashed window. Avoid traveling to stores that you don't know well after dark, because you won't be aware of the possible risks. Always let someone know where you are going, and carry not only a cell phone but also a stun gun, personal alarm, or pepper spray canister to help you get out of a threatening situation.
When out at holiday parties, even with friends or family, you can't let your guard down. Never accept drinks from a stranger. If you must leave your drink unattended for any reason, do not drink it later. Always watch the amount you're drinking, even when with good friends. If you leave the group you came with, let them know where you are going and who you are going with. If they don't realize you've gone, no one will come looking for you if you don't come back. Never walk home alone after a party. Wear sensible shoes when out at night; not only will your feet be more comfortable, but you'll be able to run if needed.
During the holidays, the dangers aren't just lurking away from your home. During the holidays, your property is more vulnerable to theft than you realize. Many people travel during the holidays, leaving their home unprotected. If you do visit family during this time of year, keep at least one light on, and have a neighbor pick up your mail and newspaper so that your home looks occupied. Even if you're staying home all season, door and window alarms, adequate outdoor lighting, and dummy cameras can go a long way towards making your home the least likely target on the block.
Following the gift-giving, be very aware of how you display your new possessions. You may be tempted to take your new iPod and your new designer purse everywhere, but these can make you a target of theft. If you've gotten a new HDTV, close the blinds! You may want to show it off, but it's not just your neighbors who might take interest in that new TV.
Don't let your holidays be ruined by burglary or assault. By covering the basics and protecting yourself ahead of time, you can make your family and your home much less of a target for criminals. Do not take your safety for granted, even in this joyous time of year. Enjoy yourself and have fun, but also stay aware and stay safe!

Did you know that nearly 7 out of 10 children will get lost for some amount of time at least once in their lives? It is estimated that at least 2,000 kids get lost every day in the United States alone. Though the vast majority are found unharmed very quickly, we've all seen the worst-case scenario in the news. What can you do to prevent this possibility?
Every parent knows the fear of losing their child in a public place, like the mall or a park. In an instant, even well-behaved children have the natural curiosity that causes them to wander off when they see something interesting. In most cases, children don't even realize the effect this has on the parent. Though it is usually innocent distractions that cause a child to be lured away momentarily, if you've seen the news, you know that this is not always the case. A lost child can get scared, hurt, or even abducted, even if you only turn your back for a second to take a phone call, place an order, or speak with a friend passing by.
From a young age, instill in your child the rules for what to do if you are accidentally separated from them. Some strangers can actually be helpful, and the old adage not to talk to strangers may not be the best advice in some situations. For example, teach them how to spot a police officer or a store employee, as both can help reunite the child with you. Even young children can be taught phone numbers and home addresses; this simple step can go a long way. Don't forget to teach them 9-1-1 while you're at it. Never take your child to crowded places without their name and address attached somewhere on them.
There are many devices that can help you protect your children from these situations. For example, one type of alarm will sound when your child has wandered more than a preset distance away from you. Another inexpensive device is a personal alarm. This method is perfect for slightly older children, who can just press the alarm button if they are in need of assistance, and a loud alarm will sound. Too many children try to behave politely even when being abducted, when it is crucial that they yell, scream, and make as much noise as possible. A personal alarm can help them get the attention of nearby adults.
No matter the situation, never assume that your child is safe. The majority of abducted children are taken by family members or those who are familiar to them. Most abductions by strangers take place on quiet roads or sidewalks, though of course the possibility also exists in crowded areas. Children who are walking home alone or playing outside without supervision are particularly at risk. Parents can be lulled into a false sense of security in situation where they believe their children are safe, but the truth is, you must be prepared for all of the possibilities, all of the time. Teach your children that they may not be able to trust a neighbor, bus driver, or anyone else they don't know well, even if they see them on a daily basis.

Personal alarms are among the most popular self defense products on the market today. These loud alarms are designed to draw attention to a dangerous situation, such as when you are being attacked or in the event of a medical emergency. Personal alarms are so simple anyone can use them. They are especially recommended for children and the elderly. Here are the answers to the questions everyone is asking about personal alarms:
How big are these alarms? How convenient are they to carry?
Personal alarms are usually no bigger than a garage door opener. Most are around 2 1/4 by 1 1/2 inches, and new technology has resulted in smaller and smaller alarm devices. Currently available personal alarms are small enough to be carried in any purse or pocket. Many also have a keychain attachments. These lightweight devices weigh an ounce or less, making them a very convenient form of protection.
Are personal alarms legal to carry?
Yes, portable personal alarms are legal to carry everywhere with you, in every state, even on airplanes. You can protect yourself anywhere you go when you have a personal alarm.
What uses are there for personal alarms?
Not everyone is prepared to use force to stop an attack. A personal alarm can be used to alert bystanders and get help. The piercing noise of the alarm will make many assailants turn and run. In many other cases, such as a fall or medical emergency, a personal alarm can be invaluable. Personal alarms can even be used to scare away wild or domestic animals. Many even double as door or window alarms.
How loud are personal alarms?
The audible feature of a personal alarm is a high pitched sound of 120 decibels or more. For comparison, this is nearly as loud as a jet engine from just 100 feet away, and louder than a power mower. This level of noise is uncomfortable to listen to even for just a second or two, and it is loud enough to draw attention from a wide area. Criminals do not like to draw attention to themselves, and will likely run off when they realize the alarm cannot be stopped, even if no one comes to your rescue.
What are the advantages of personal alarms?
Personal alarms are one of the safest and most effective ways to protect yourself. Unlike other self defense devices, there is absolutely zero chance of it being used against you. In addition, personal alarms are a popular choice for those who are unwilling or unable to use force to stop an attacker, and can be used by anyone, regardless of physical abilities or age. They require no training or permits to carry or use.
What are the disadvantages of personal alarms?
Personal alarms are a passive device, in that they will not actually disable the assailant. Still, these are very effective devices for a wide range of applications. Remember, personal alarms have applications far beyond simply self defense. In addition, the alarm has done its job if it causes others to come to your aid or causes the attacker to retreat. Many people do carry both pepper spray and a stun gun or pepper spray canister for an even stronger self defense plan.

Most people do not often think about how well-prepared they are for an emergency, but it really is something that you should consider for your family's safety as well as your own. Being prepared for an emergency brings peace of mind, even if you never have to use your emergency preparedness supplies or skills.
Start with an emergency kit that is well-stocked with food, water, utensils, matches, toiletries, and other items that you may need. Don't forget to include necessary medications. Your kit should include everything you need for at least three days. Clothing, blankets, flashlights, gloves, and other supplies can help you be more comfortable in the case of an emergency. When preparing your emergency kit, focus on survival basics such as food, fresh water, and warmth.
Evaluate your own personal needs, and make sure your emergency kit contains everything you will need to live for 3 days with no additional supplies. Consider how a disaster may affect your needs; include the supplies to deal with medical emergencies. Don't forget to include copies of important family documents like identification and insurance policies.
All of these items should be stored in a sturdy waterproof container somewhere where they should be accessible after an emergency. Keep all of the supplies together in one kit; don't plan to go searching around the house for batteries, flashlights, and other items if there is an emergency. Too many families have an emergency kit buried somewhere in their garage; they will probably be unable to find it quickly if the need arises. You may want to consider purchasing several kits and keeping them around the house so that they will be even easier to access; you will also be able to share these with others who may be less prepared.
Besides placing the supplies in an accessible location, be sure that all of your family members know what to do if various emergencies should happen. You should choose a safe meeting place that is away from your house, such as a school down the street. Practice an emergency drill with your family, even if it feels silly to do so. What will you do in the case of a fire, earthquake, or flood? Have a plan for where you will go if any of these situations should occur. Consider the natural disasters that are more common for your area when planning for emergency situations.
Also make sure that you have a plan for if an emergency should happen while you are at school or at work. For example, make sure that your children know not to leave the school to try to find you at work, if a large-scale emergency should happen. Make sure that the school has your contact information (cellular and at work) so that they can contact you if anything happens. If old enough, your children should have your phone number, as well as the numbers of in-state and out-of-state relatives, programmed into their cell phones. By being prepared for an emergency, you can minimize the impact it will have on your life.

A security camera is an indispensable method for catching criminals in or around your office, storefront, or home. If your budget is tight, you may be interested in knowing that a fake one often does the trick just as well as a real security camera. As a homeowner or business owner, you must make careful decisions about what security measures are necessary. Many security camera systems are cost prohibitive for all but the larger businesses, and even basic systems for homes and businesses can be expensive. If the cost of such a system is out of your price range, do not despair. Fake security cameras offer many of the benefits of real ones.
By far the most important reason to purchase security cameras is to dissuade criminal activities, particularly theft or other property crimes. Dummy cameras look exactly the same as a real camera, and can put an end to many of these problems. Many even have blinking lights and other features to make them look authentic, although they are not connected to anything.
These cameras should be mounted in public, highly visible areas where they are sure to be spotted by anyone considering illegal activities on your property. Criminals will not closely examine the camera to see if it's a dummy before making their move. Even if they do get close enough to look at the device carefully, replicas camera look just like the real thing. There is simply no way for potential criminals to distinguish fake camera from real ones. The worry of being caught on tape is a strong deterrent.
These cameras can be placed anywhere you would place a regular security camera. They work best in areas where you would expect heavy security measures and where they will be immediately spotted by anyone trying to determine if your property is a good target. Common places include near doorways, outside under the eaves of a home, or near valuable objects in need of extra protection.
A dummy camera, giving the effect that someone is watching, can be invaluable not only to stop criminal activities such as burglaries, but also to dissuade those inside your home such as house cleaners or nannies from doing anything they shouldn't. Anytime you can't be there to stop such activities in person, a dummy camera will make anyone uncomfortable carrying out criminal activities within sight of the cameras. Many potential criminals change their mind as soon as they catch sight of these cameras.
If you are on a budget or simply don't want to mess with tapes and other recording systems, dummy cameras make an excellent choice to protect your family, your employees, and your customers from harm while on your property. They don't require wiring, which allows them to be placed nearly anywhere. Simply mount the housing, and let the dummy camera do its job. This cost-effective measure can deter break-ins, theft, or vandalism in homes or businesses. Even if you already have a full security system, adding several fake cameras can heighten the visible level of security while keeping your costs down.

Though age brings wisdom, it also brings its own set of challenges, many of which are not well understood by those who are not used to caring for older people. Even when assisted living or nursing home-type assistance is not required, there are still a few important safety precautions for seniors, particularly those who live alone.
One of the greatest risks for seniors is a fire in the home. Decreased mobility makes escape difficult without early warning. Always install smoke alarms, and remind older relatives of the dangers of smoking or cooking at home. Smoke alarms can be connected to home security systems, which will alert the fire department when a fire is detected. Seniors should follow the same fire safety precautions as younger family members, such as having an escape route planned for emergency situations.
Elderly family members, especially those living alone, are particularly prone to break-ins because they appear vulnerable. Door and window alarms can get seniors the help they need if someone is trying to break in. A security camera, or even a dummy camera, can make potential burglars think that someone is watching. Even if they know that the resident lives alone, this is a powerful theft deterrent. The homes of seniors living alone should be especially well protected using the same principles that can help younger families avoid burglaries in their homes.
To avoid slips or falls in the home, be sure that the house has appropriate safety features in place, such as no-slip rugs and a bar in the shower. The bathroom is a particular area where safety features should be installed. A safe and user-friendly home is the key to avoiding falls or other in-home accidents. Good lighting, both indoors and out, can not only help the resident see well both at night and during the day, but also keep criminals from thinking that the home is unoccupied.
For seniors, personal alarms are invaluable. These can be activated not only when someone is breaking in to the home, but also in the case of a fall, a medical emergency, or any other situation where assistance may be required. If you have an elderly family member, placing personal alarms around the home can put your mind at ease and alleviate some of your concern at leaving your elderly relatives home alone. The alarm can also be carried or worn, both inside and outside the home.
Many seniors are mobile enough to care for themselves. Consider purchasing a canister of pepper spray for seniors looking for a way to protect themselves against purse-snatchers or other criminals. Seniors, especially those lacking in mobility, often feel vulnerable in public and dependent on others for their safety. A canister of pepper spray is easy to use and can give a sense of independence and freedom.
Some older people may need to be reminded of personal safety principles when in public. For example, some senior citizens carry large amounts of cash to avoid trips to the bank. This, however, can be quite dangerous, especially if someone should spot your relative counting the cash or paying for a purchase. Most street crimes are crimes of opportunity perpetrated by criminals looking for an easy target. Unfortunately, senior citizens may be seen as an easy target in their eyes. You may also want to remind seniors to lock their doors and windows, as they may be accustomed to keeping them open, even at night or when they leave the house.
Becoming older is no reason to give up independence. Still, seniors must consider their safety, including medical emergencies, break-ins, and fires, and take steps to reduce the risk of these common dangers.

Stun guns are one of the most effective types of nonlethal self defense device. A stun gun is a handheld, battery powered device designed to shock the target. The stun gun has two prongs on the end. By touching your attacker with these prongs and pulling the trigger, an electrical current is completed. The current causes your attacker to be unable to control muscle movement, resulting in loss of balance and coordination. The questions and answers below address the most commonly asked questions regarding stun guns.
How long does the device have to make contact? - Although this depends on the voltage of the device, in general, a one second contact will startle the attacker and cause muscle contraction. Two seconds will cause muscle spasms and a disoriented or dazed state. Three or more seconds results in loss of balance and muscle control. This length of time causes loss of balance and complete loss of muscle control. These effects will last for fifteen minutes or more. Low voltage stun guns or very large targets may require a slightly longer time period. When using a stun gun, however, it is not important to monitor closely the amount of time it is in contact with the assailant. Simply press it against your attacker until the attack stops.
Why isn't 1,000,000 volts deadly? - Stun guns have been touted as one of the most effective nonlethal self defense methods. Most stun guns have a current of between 800,000 and two million volts. Many people wonder why this voltage is not deadly. Although the voltage is high, the amperage is low, only about 3 milliamps. This is far below the amperage necessary to do lasting harm. As a result, stun guns will not cause permanent harm to the person who receives the electric shock.
Will I get shocked if the attacker touches me? - You will not be hurt, even if the attacker grabs you while you still have your stun gun pressed against his skin. The electrical current is absorbed by the muscles, and will not pass through the body to the holder of the stun gun.
Can a stun gun be discharged accidentally? - Stun guns are designed with a safety switch to prevent this possibility. Unless the safety switch is off and the device is turned on, the stun gun will not produce a shock.
Will a stun gun work on those under the influence? - Stun guns are still effective on those under the influence of drugs or alcohol. While the exact effects may vary, stun guns have proven to be effective on well over 90 percent of users. Your assailant will simply be unable to fight the effects of a powerful stun gun.
What are the legal restrictions on carrying a stun gun? - Although stun guns are legal to carry and use for self defense reasons in most states, they are restricted in some areas. You may need a permit to carry a concealed stun gun. If in doubt, contact your local police department.
Can a stun gun be fired multiple times? - Yes, a stun gun can be fired multiple times during the same attack, making it an excellent choice for a defending yourself in a situation with multiple assailants. With a fresh set of batteries, there are almost no limits on number of times the stun gun can be used during a single attack.

Before investing in any personal protection device, it is critical to explore your options, particularly their effectiveness and their limitations. Each type of device has its pros and cons. When it comes to buying and using self defense products, there are important rules to keep in mind. Here are the important dos and don'ts to remember:
Do: Know your state and local laws when considering the purchase of TASER devices, stun guns, and pepper spray canisters. In some areas, there are restrictions on purchasing, carrying, or using some types of self defense products. If in doubt, contact your local law enforcement agency.
Research all of the options available to you. The wide array of self defense products on the market today offers something for everyone, but you must compare them carefully before purchasing your self defense devices.
Learn the self defense laws. In which conditions and situations is it considered legal or acceptable to use your chosen personal protection strategy? This step is critical in making you comfortable using it should you need to. Though it is legal to defend yourself against an imminent physical attack, there are limits on what you can do.
Learn how to use your chosen device. Know how to turn off the safety latch and how to use it against an attacker. Read any instructions that come with the device, and learn them by heart. In the heat of an attack, you won't have time to examine your device or think about how to use it.
Be aware of your surroundings wherever you are. Attacks don't just happen in "dangerous" areas; it is possible to be attacked anywhere, at any time. You must be ready to use your self defense device if the time comes.
Don't: Purchase a device before you know how it works. What if you realize that you wouldn't be comfortable using it if you had to? The best self defense device is one that you would realistically be able to use in a potentially violent situation with very little warning. Take the time to research the devices you are considering and learn about how they work before making your decision.
Play with or "test" pepper sprays, Mace, stun guns, or TASER devices. They are not toys, and they really do hurt, even if they do no lasting harm. Also, in many situations it may be illegal to use such devices if you are not in imminent danger. Never pull out your self defense product unless you are prepared to use it.
Forget your protection at home. Too many people take the important step of purchasing self defense products, only to leave them in the bottom of a drawer at home. Your pepper spray or stun gun will do you no good there! In order to be effective and available when you need it, you must make a habit of taking these items with you wherever you go.
Self defense devices are very effective when used correctly. Before purchasing them, be sure to read and follow this list of guidelines. After you have selected your self defense devices, there are also a few things to consider when it comes to using these devices.
