If you have recently decided to put your home on the market, you surely understand what a stressful time this can be. Today, this process often takes even longer than it used to, adding to the anxiety. Although you probably feel like you just can't add another thing to your 'to do' list during this time, there is one important thing that you must think about if you're in the process of selling your home, and that is home security.

When your home is on the market, the details of your home will become public knowledge through real estate listings. Because your personal information is out in the public, this can put you at a disadvantage when it comes to the security of your home, and even your personal safety. You may want to avoid posting detailed information, such as a virtual tour or extensive photos of your home, on the internet. By protecting such information about your home, you can avoid becoming the target of burglars who may take advantage of this information to scope out your home and its contents prior to breaking in.

Another security risk comes in the form of open houses, when dozens of strangers will be walking through your home. Whether you are selling your home with the help of a realtor, or have opted for a For Sale By Owner listing, there are steps you can take to minimize the danger of strangers in your home. Always get the contact information of anyone you let into the home. Not only is this an important security measure, but it will also help you contact potential buyers after they've seen your house. No matter your selling strategy, make sure that potential buyers have been screened before they are allowed inside.

Many sellers are choosing to allow their homes to be shown by appointment only, minimizing the number of people in the home at a given time. Make sure all visitors enter and exit through only one door, and always escort potential buyers by following behind them, rather than leading them through the house. Never enter small rooms such as a bathroom with a visitor, as there is a possibility of being trapped inside. If you plan to show the house by yourself, consider purchasing such devices as a pepper spray pen, which offer effective protection against such threats without being too obtrusive.

During the selling process, it is crucial to remove all valuables from the home. This is especially true if you plan to host open house events, where you may not be able to keep an eye on everyone in the house. If you cannot remove valuable items from the home, install security cameras nearby.

Many sellers vacate their homes before they have been sold. Although this might become a necessity, it's also important to recognize the dangers of doing so. While the home is unoccupied, it is at a higher risk of being broken into. While this is particularly true if you have left belongings in the home, even an empty home is not immune from this threat. Even though you aren't living there, it is still your responsibility to protect it from break-ins by install alarms around doors and windows as well as other security devices. Consider portable alarms and other wireless devices that can be taken with you once the house sells.

Article Title: What to Say and What Not to Say During a 911 Call

When a home invasion or any other emergency happens, you want help immediately. Such situations often escalate quickly, requiring you to respond quickly. Calling 911 will get police officers and other emergency responders moving in your direction. What you say, and what you don't say, during a 911 call can dramatically impact the result. In order to help the 911 dispatcher send the right help quickly, you'll want to answer three critical questions: Who you are, where you are, and what is the emergency. Make yourself as easy to understand as possible. Even though you will be overwhelmed by the situation, screaming unintelligible words into the phone won't help the police react quickly.

If you need an ambulance or paramedic, state it as soon as possible so that appropriate help can be sent. If you know that your assailant is armed, tell the operator what kind of weapon, in as much detail as possible. This information is passed on to the responding officers, and can help them prepare for the situation. Describe the assailant's physical appearance to aid police in identifying both the assailant and the victim(s) when they arrive on the scene. Keep the backstory to a minimum, but do provide these critical details to the 911 operator.

Many people assume that the 911 dispatcher can track down the exact location given only a phone number. While this may be true if you are calling from a land line, and some sophisticated systems can pinpoint the location if a cell phone is used, in many cases this is not possible, or cannot be done quickly enough. If you are calling from a prepaid cell phone or a cell phone that is not connected to one of the major service providers, you will need to provide your exact location. The operator must know where you are before they send someone.

Your 911 call will also be recorded, and it serves as an electronic witness to the incident. If you are involved in a criminal or civil court case as a result of the crime, it may be introduced as evidence. Although your number one priority will be getting police to your location quickly, it's also important to consider what you're saying to make sure the recording is a strong witness for your side. There is a fine line between self defense and unprovoked violence; anything you say during the call can be used in court.

No matter how you plan to protect yourself from the threat of violence, be careful what you say or do while on the line with the 911 dispatcher. Although the operator will try to keep you on the line and chat with you, this may not be in your best interest. Consider also the possibility that the intruder will overhear this conversation and determine your location within the home. If you do plan to confront the attacker with violence, either using a firearm or using a nonlethal self defense device, do not explain your actions or intended actions to the 911 dispatcher.

To help 911 operators do their job, only call 911 for actual emergencies. Every city has a non-emergency police line for issues that do not require immediate attention. Do not let children play with your cell phone, even if it's in the locked position or isn't connected to a service plan. Even if the operator believes they've received a prank call, they are obligated to send police to investigate.

Parents, teachers, and students expect schools to be a safe place. Acts of violence disrupt the learning process, not to mention having a profoundly negative emotional impact on those affected by school violence. According to a recent report on school crime and student safety by the CDC and the Department of Education, students aged twelve through eighteen are the victims of more than 2.7 million crimes at school each year. Over the past year, fifteen percent of all high school students reported being involved in a physical altercation on school property. Just how common are crimes on school campuses?

28 percent of students in middle school and high school reported being bullied in the last six months.A significant portion of these students also admitted avoiding one or more places at school for their own safety. Nearly 20% of students in middle and high school report being threatened with a beating.

According to the Gun-Free Schools Act Report, nearly four thousand students are expelled each year for bringing a gun to school. Perhaps surprisingly, more than a third of these expulsions involve middle school students, and a tenth involve even younger students. School violence might be a stereotypically high school occurrence, but it happens at all levels of the school system, even among kids as young as seven or eight years old.

In addition to incidents involving firearms, there are also thousands of other crimes, from physical assault to threat to vandalism, happening on school campuses worldwide. Not only gun-related expulsions, but also violence in general, is actually more common in middle schools than at high schools. Students aged twelve through fourteen are more likely than older students to become victims of crime at school.

It is likely that violence, theft, and drugs will continue to be significant problems in the school system. A tenth of all high school students reported being threatened with, or injured with, a weapon in the previous year. Students in middle school or high school are more likely to be victims of theft while at school than while away for school. A quarter reported that drugs had been offered to them on school property within the past year.

The point to take away from this is that kids are not immune from violence in schools, no matter their age. This might seem like an urban high school problem, but it happens in schools of all sizes, and in all locations. A staggering 86 percent of all public schools reported one or more serious violent incidents in the 2005-2006 school year. The overall crime rate within schools is 46 reported crimes each year per 1,000 students. If you have a child at school, no matter their age, they must be prepared to deal with the possibility of such situations arising.

Your options to protect your children from violence at school are unfortunately limited. The vast majority of schools have a 'no tolerance' policy, meaning that students may not carry such devices as pepper spray or a stun gun. They can, however, bring a personal alarm to school, and this can be invaluable in alerting teachers and other adults to a violent or potentially violent confrontation.

With robberies and other workplace violence constantly in the news, you may be wondering how to protect yourself at work. Whether you are an employer or an employee, workplace safety is very important. While you should be able to trust security guards and policemen to come to your aid, you should also be prepared to handle such situations as they occur.

While you should re-consider your decision to work in a very dangerous workplace, the truth is that nearly any industry could leave you open for such an attack, particularly if you deal with the public regularly. There are no industries that are immune to such attacks, either from outsiders or from disgruntled employees.

Workplace self defense is a tricky subject because employers may become liable if an employee is hurt on the job, and therefore many employers would prefer it if the employee did not try to apprehend the attacker or robber. However, in some cases this may be necessary for self defense.

When working in an industry that is frequently targeted, such as gas stations or banks, panic buttons are often available to set off an alarm, either audible or silent, in case of such an attack. As many employees have been told, simply press the alarm button and hand over the money or anything else the robber is after. However, if the assailant has any sort of weapon, or is not easily deterred, an alarm may not be enough.

Employers should provide their employees with a safe work environment, and indeed, some provide pepper spray, automatic locking doors, or other devices to deter attacks. Most companies have taken at least some steps to ensure that their employees remain safe. Some even provide self-defense seminars to teach you how they would like you to handle such incidents.

However, if you work in an environment where you are afraid of such an attack, there are a few things that you can do on your own to help give you peace of mind. Taking a proactive role in your own safety is a must, particularly if your job takes you into deserted areas or occurs during the night or early morning hours. Enrolling in a self defense class can teach you strategies to make you more confident. Besides learning your own self defense tactics, consider carrying a small canister of pepper spray in your pocket. They can even be found in keychain size, easily concealed.

Though many companies do not want their employees carrying around knives or guns, and in fact it may be against company policy, a small pepper spray canister makes a wise investment to protect you while you are at work. They cause no lasting harm, and can be perfectly concealed until they are needed. Having such a device in your pocket gives you the confidence to go about your day, knowing that you can handle any situation that arises. At the same time, be careful not to become over-confident; you should always let the professionals handle such situations, if possible.

Many employers fail to provide training or methods for self defense, believing that "it won't happen here." This simply isn't the case; it is crucial to prepare for such incidents. Preparing yourself for self defense at work by learning strategies and carrying pepper spray is a wise decision if you want to be safe at work.

Have you ever wondered if you could fight off an attacker using only your bare hands? While it's always best to use a stun gun, pepper spray, or other self defense device against an assailant, what happens if you're caught without any weapon of any kind?

If you're caught unprepared by a surprise attack, your first reaction will be fear and helplessness. Next, you'll probably start wracking your brain for anything you have on you – car keys or a pen, for example- that you could use to fight back. In this situation, it is crucial to have a well-practiced plan for fighting back. Here are a few basic self-defense moves that are recommended for most teenagers and adults, even those without a lot of previous training.

    1. Eye gouge. With your first clenched tightly, gouge the attacker's eyes with your thumbs. Try to gouge both eyes at once for the best chance of escaping. Thumbs are stronger than fingers, although you can still expect some injury to the thumbs if you try this method. One of the biggest mistakes made when trying the eye gouge is poking at the attacker using the index finger, rather than using the thumb in a fast jabbing motion. You can't be hesitant if you want the eye gouge to work.

    2. Ear slap. Slightly cup your hands, with your fingers close together. Then, slap both of your hands onto the attacker's ears at the same time. Your movement must be fast, fluid, and perfectly timed. The resulting ringing sensation can give you a few seconds to break free.

    3. Punch sensitive areas. Both the nose and Adam's apple, or throat, are sensitive to jabs using your closed fist. In fact, if you are fighting an attacker using punches, landing them anywhere on the head is a good bet. This technique is frequently used in a close situation in which you're unable to set up another technique because you don't have enough maneuvering room.

    4. Groin kick. The groin area is notoriously sensitive. Knee your attacker's crotch area as hard as you can. Although this works best for male attackers, it can be a sensitive area for females too. This method should give you a second or two to get away, particularly if the attacker hasn't yet gotten a firm grasp on you.

    5. Pulling, biting, and scratching. If there are no nearby objects that you can use as a weapon, and you have no experience with physical fights, these are the three techniques of last resort. Pull the hair, bite the skin, or scratch at the attacker's face with your fingernails.

While these moves can free you from an attacker's grasp, they should only be used as a last resort. The worst-case scenario is being confronted by an attacker when you have nothing with which to fight back. Of course, it is always better to avoid potential attacks in the first place, or fight back using self defense devices designed to get you out of these kinds of situations. But if these options are unavailable, you must know how to protect yourself.

Many people think about their personal safety when in their home or when out alone, especially at night, but forget to think about office safety. In the office, employees are vulnerable to attack from outsiders, former employees, and disgruntled clients. Although the types of office violence that make headlines are the types involving former clients or employees who return with guns, this is far from typical. More typical types of office violence include thefts, verbal altercations, and sexual assault, although physical violence is still possible.

Communicating with other employees is crucial when it comes to your collective personal safety. If you work in an office with others, you should have a plan of action, perhaps even including a code word so that an employee can call for safety. Always lock your office doors when you're not there, even if there are people in neighboring offices, and don't forget to lock your computer down when you leave to prevent unauthorized use.

Security cameras, either real or dummy, can do a lot to prevent theft and attacks, particularly when they are placed prominently around the office. In the area open to clients or other visitors, you can place a small sign about your security system, even when you don't have one. Real or fake cameras will stop any unusual or unwanted activities.

Around the office, you can place personal alarms in discreet locations. These devices emit a loud alarm when pressed, and are commonly kept in desk drawers or other concealed locations. Because they're only about the size of a garage door opener, they can be kept almost anywhere. Another good self defense device to keep around the office is pepper spray. Many of these canisters are even disguised to look like pens or keychains so that they can easily be placed around the office. Pepper spray pens can even be kept in pencil holders on the top of each desk without looking out of place. These can empower employees to take action to protect their safety than waiting helplessly for assistance to arrive.

If you work in an office, you may already be aware of specific dangers facing your industry. The fact is, some industries are more susceptible to these events than others, although no industry is completely safe from violence. No matter the industry, good customer service policies can actually go a long way towards preventing altercations with unhappy clients.

No matter which devices you choose for your office, be sure that everyone at work knows how to use them and when to use them. What should employees do if someone comes in yelling? To what extent should they try to stop thefts? What should they do after setting off the personal alarm or spraying the pepper spray? These policies should be outlined in advance so that workers aren't left wondering what to do in the aftermath of such an event. Remember that personal safety in the office extends beyond physical altercations to sexual harassment and other issues; the methods for addressing these should also be clearly outlined in the employee handbook too. If you are an employee and you don't know what to do in some of these situations, now is the time to find your answers.

Criminal activities can take place anywhere and at any time, including offices and other commercial establishments, homes, and outdoors. By keeping your personal safety in mind wherever you go, you can be prepared for these possibilities. Whether your office is protected by security guards or not, the personal safety of every employee should be ensured through the placement of dummy cameras, personal alarms, pepper spray, and other devices.

When purchasing self defense items like stun guns and pepper spray, it is important to learn how to carry and use them safely. Although the media often focuses on the dangers of guns and knives, lesser-known self defense weapons like pepper spray and stun guns can also pose a danger if you are not educated on their use. If you have any questions about their use, ask your local police department; if they do not offer training, they will know where such training is offered.

Pepper spray comes in a can, like spray paint. Unlike spray paint, it has a safety mechanism that must be turned so that the contents can be sprayed. Always carry your pepper spray with the safety mechanism engaged. However, examine it carefully so that you know how to turn off the safety quickly while it's in your purse or pocket, in case you ever need to use it. Otherwise you'll have to pull it out, look at it, and turn off the safety, all while your attacker is coming closer. Once the safety is off, it can be sprayed just like spray paint into your attacker's face.

Keep pepper spray at room temperature, and never leave it in your car during the summer. Otherwise, the high temperatures can cause the canister to leak. If you do come in contact with pepper spray, flush the area with cool water, and take off any clothing that has been sprayed. Do not use warm water or touch your face.

Stun guns must be pressed directly to the skin of your attacker in order to be effective. Keep in mind that it is possible to use the gun multiple times on one charge, so be very careful when picking up the gun after using it on an attacker, so that you do not stun yourself. However, when used correctly it is extremely difficult to shock yourself; even if the attacker is touching you, using the stun gun will not cause the current to pass through to your body. Although a permit is usually not necessary for carrying a stun gun, you should still consider training if you plan to carry one. Training can ensure that you know how to use it if the time comes.

If you opt for a stun gun, look for models with disposable pins. If the attacker tries to grab your stun gun away from you, the disposable pin will pull out, and the stun gun cannot be used against you.

After using pepper spray or a stun gun, do not wait to watch your attacker's reaction to it. Instead, flee the area quickly, while the assailant is temporarily incapacitated. Pepper spray's effects last at least 45 seconds, while stun guns may last from 5 to 10 minutes for full recovery.

Always remember that stun guns and pepper spray can cause pain, even though they are very unlikely to cause permanent damage. For this reason, keep them out of the reach of children, and teach your children that they are not toys. To a child, your pepper spray and stun gun may look like spray paint and a toy gun. Never use these items if there is no emergency, as misuse may be a crime. Although using stun guns and pepper spray for self defense is legal, using them when there is no threat is not.

Did you know that the easiest way to prevent burglaries and other home invasions is to improve the appearance of your home? Your home's appearance plays a big part in whether criminals find it an attractive and worthwhile target. Many criminals will "case" the neighborhood, looking for homes that look like easy targets. They will then return to break in when it looks like you're not there. Home security doesn't have to be expensive, and you don't have to sacrifice aesthetics for a secure home. In fact, with just a few simple strategies you can make your home much less attractive for burglars and other criminals.

Criminals will pick a home that looks like there are worthwhile items to steal. To prevent this, keep the curtains closed on your windows, especially those on the ground floor. You don't want thieves peering inside your windows at your new TV and video gaming systems. Keep these items inside the house where they can't be seen.

Criminals are also looking for a home that is easy to break into. Doors with panes of glass make attractive targets, because thieves can unlock the door themselves after they break the glass pane. Did you know that nearly a third of all burglaries happen when doors and windows are kept open or unlocked? Keep your windows and doors locked securely to prevent break-ins. A dummy camera placed in the eaves of your home is an easy way to make criminals think they are being watched; most criminals will not break into a home when they see such a device. Keep ladders, crowbars, hammers, and other devices locked in the shed so they cannot be used by opportunistic thieves to break into your own home.

Finally, criminals are casing the neighborhood to look for homes where they won't get caught breaking in. Place signs around your home alerting potential criminals to the presence of a home security system, even if you don't actually have one. A criminal is much less likely to choose a home with a security system than one without, and they have no way of knowing that your home does not actually have such features. To catch any burglars that may break in despite the signs, place door and window alarms on any doors or windows that are accessible from outside the home. Though these won't prevent break-ins, they are very likely to keep intruders from coming any further into your home.

Avoid planting bushes or other cover around windows or doors. Criminals can hide there, out of sight, as they break into your home with no worry about being seen by those driving or walking past your home. If you feel that planting bushes near these areas is necessary, choose particularly thorny varieties. When planning for home security, walk around your home and think about how you might be able to get in if you were locked out. If you can find a way in, secure it. This is a method a criminal may use to get inside your home.

Your home should look occupied at all times; thieves know they are less likely to get caught if no one is inside the home at the time. If you are on vacation, have a neighbor or friend collect your mail, and possibly even cut your grass. Leave a light on when you're not home. Though it may cost a few pennies in electricity, if it makes a would-be burglar decide that they should not stop at your home, it is well worth the investment. With careful planning, you can protect your home from burglars and other criminals without spending a small fortune or compromising the beauty of your home.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Each new year is a time of renewal, rejuvenation, and of course, resolutions in the hope that this year will be different and better than the last one. By February, of course, you've stopped going to the gym, fell off the diet bandwagon, and given up on your new hobby. This year, why not set your resolution sights on something a little more obtainable? It's never too late to make a promise to make changes that will benefit you and your loved ones year round. Too many families forget to think of their home security as a year-round endeavor. Take a little time now to update and improve the security of your home, and reap the benefits all year long.

What are some easy changes you can make that will have significant security benefits? First, invest in alarms for your doors and windows. Even if you don't want to invest in a whole-house security system, which can be costly, individual alarms for each entry point around your home cost just a few dollars. They are definitely worth it. You may even be able to alarm all of your windows for less than that gym membership you've stopped using. You're sure to find alarms that fit your needs and your budget, no matter what they may be. Even a sign saying that your home is alarmed has a proven effect in deterring would-be burglars. If you want to go the extra mile, there are also security cameras and a whole host of other home security options to install inside and outside the home.

Over the years, daily use can take its toll on your home. This not only affects its cosmetic appearance, but also its safety. Do you have any broken locks or cracked panes of glass? What about window frames becoming weak with age? Make a commitment to making these simple repairs as soon as possible. Hire a carpenter, a locksmith, or a general handyman to fix or replace potential security problems around your home. You'll sleep better knowing that your home is secure. If you have a key hidden above a doorway or under a doormat, move it now. This is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your family. It might seem sensible to have a spare key in a nearby location, but every criminal will know to check the usual hiding spots.

If you're like most people, you roll your eyes the second anyone mentions the necessity of having an emergency plan. Very few people actually take the time to make practical plans for what their family will do in the case of an emergency, even if they do realize how important such a plan can be. Discuss what the family should do, and where you should go, in case of a fire, a home invasion, and other possible emergency scenarios. Set up a meeting point in case you are separated from the rest of the family. Don't forget to stash away a disaster preparedness kit, too. Hopefully, you'll never need to put your plan into action or open your emergency kit, but if you're ever in need of one, you'll be glad you took the necessary steps to keep your family safe.

These three key commitments to your family's safety require some time, but they are not very expensive. These changes can make a significant difference in your family's overall security level. There's no time like the present to make your family safer from harm.

Pets are constant companions, and many pet owners consider them to be every bit a member of the family. The majority of American households have at least one pet, but these family members are too often overlooked in your home security plan.

Having pets presents some unique home security challenges. In some cases, the entries and exits for your animals become an access point for a burglar. Could a burglar use your dog door to break into the back door of your home? Do you usually leave a window open so that your cats can get outside at night? Once you have pets, make sure that your daily routine does not present weaknesses that can be exploited by intruders.

In the past, having pets and a home security system was a bit frustrating. Old styles of motion detectors were often set off accidentally by pets. Today's more sophisticated motion detectors are able to tell the difference between a pet and a person. You won't have to worry about a false alarm after the motion detector is triggered by the movements of a family pet. If you've had bad experienced with an overly sensitive motion detector in the past, rest assured that today's detectors are designed with pets in mind. These motion detector alarms are a critical part of any home security plan, alerting you to potential intruders who have made it into your home.

Pets should also be taken into account when planning other aspects of your emergency plan. Your emergency kit, if you have one, probably contains everything your family would need to survive at least a few days. If you don't have any emergency kit at all, of course, you need one. Families that are prepared with an emergency kit often overlook the needs of their pets. Don't forget to include pet foods, any necessary pet medications, and perhaps a way of restraining your pet in case your home is no longer safe to enter. You don't want Fluffy or Fido to run away in the aftermath of an earthquake, after all!

When you're away from home, you can watch pet sitters and pets via nanny cams. Do you want to make sure your pet sitters or your children are being nice to your kittens? What about making sure your new puppy isn't chewing up the house? A nanny cam is an unobtrusive way to watch how your pets are faring when you're not there, whether you're in the next room or miles away from home.

Additional safety measures can be taken that are particular to your pet. For example, have your pet microchipped, especially if he is allowed outside or if he is a rare or exotic breed that may be stolen. If you let your pet into the yard to play and run, consider an invisible pet fence to make sure he doesn't stray too far.

Whether you want to make your pets secure in the home, or are worried about how to protect them in an emergency situation, a little forethought into your home security options can give you the assurance that your pets will be safe and sound, just like every other family member.

Schools have long been "weapon free zones," but they do not often have a way to ensure that this is true. Unfortunately, today's children and young adults have access to guns, knives, and other weapons, which can become a danger to themselves and to other students. There is no good reason or excuse to bring a weapon into the school building. With school violence on the rise, districts face tough decisions on how to stop violent situations before they occur, making the need for metal detectors higher now than it has ever been.

Students certainly have the right to feel secure in school, but there is only one way to make sure that weapons are not being let inside: metal detectors. To stop all types of school violence, of course, it is necessary to get to the root of the problem, although metal detectors can go a long way towards stopping violence in schools. By detecting guns or knives in pockets and backpacks, a metal detector can make the school building a weapon-free area.

Across the country, school officials are making the hard choice to install metal detectors in schools to keep weapons out. Once walk-through metal detectors are installed, all students and visitors must pass through the detectors before being allowed to enter the school building. Although some schools install permanent, walk-through metal detectors, many find this option cost prohibitive; the costs can be millions of dollars for a single school district.

Other districts are choosing handheld metal detectors, which can be used selectively but require security personnel to wave the wand across each person being screened. These metal detectors are often an important part of security procedures in government buildings, airports, and other buildings, in addition to thousands of schools worldwide. There are many kinds of handheld metal detectors to suit the specific security needs of a school setting. Hand-held body scanners are sensitive enough to detect even the smallest weapon hidden by clothing.

Once metal detectors have been purchased, decisions must be made about how to implement them into the school day. Will every student be searched every day, or will searches be random or on specific days when the threat of violence seems higher?

Instead of dealing with incidents as they occur, a metal detector allows schools to screen out the tools of violence before they get into the school building in the first place. Not only do metal detectors in school provide a way to stop violence before it happens, but they also provide a visual deterrent. The presence of metal detectors makes would-be criminals much less likely to even attempt to bring weapons into the school. The addition of visible security features such as these makes all students feel more secure throughout the school day.

It is up to school administrators to make their schools a safer place to learn. Metal detectors have become a common sight as schools attempt to stop violence. These metal detectors play a significant role in catching weapons and helping students feel safer in the classroom.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Many people are familiar with the metal detectors used by hobbyists who search for buried treasures on beaches, in parks, and in other areas where metal objects may have been dropped over the years. There are many other uses for metal detectors, however, many of which you may not be aware of. In addition to use in such varied industries as construction and hospitals, metal detectors are also vital to police work.

Police may use ground metal detectors to find buried or hidden weapons and other evidence. For example, if a suspect leads police to the location of buried evidence, a metal detector can be used to find the evidence quickly without exerting the effort to dig up the entire property. Many ground search metal detectors will even display the type of object found, which can reduce the need for officers to waste time digging up the wrong object. For this use, law enforcement agencies often choose Garrett metal detectors, which are well known to operate in rough terrain.

Handheld metal detectors, of course, are another type of metal detector that is frequently used in a law enforcement setting. Although many police stations, jails, and other law enforcement buildings have built-in, walk-through metal detectors, police often rely on handheld devices, particularly when working security for a large event. Using such devices is often much faster than a pat down search, and is often a necessary step after the walk-through detector alerts security to the presence of a hidden metal object. Handheld metal detecting wands are often seen as a compromise between walk-through detectors, which do not pinpoint the location of the contraband, and strip searches, which are often regarded as intrusive and unnecessary.

You may see these metal detectors after someone in the security line has set off the walk-through detector, but handheld metal detectors are perhaps just as frequently used as an initial screening method, especially in situations when a strip search is not appropriate and a walk-through detector cannot be installed, such as at a temporary event.

Recently, many police agencies across the world have taken to the streets with handheld, wand-style metal detectors in areas where gun and knife violence has become prevalent. These metal detector operations are often undertaken after police notice a rise in violence. Police officers with such scanners may be stationed on specific streets or near a group of nightclubs, for example. Although stop and search methods have been criticized in the past, in many cases they receive wide community support when the issue is handled sensitively.

This simple, easy-to-use and portable device is often chosen by law enforcement and security agencies as a direct replacement for other methods of searching, whether for guns and other contraband on those walking into a secure area, or for a gun that has been discarded by the side of a deserted road. Handheld detectors offer optimum sensitivity, with a large scan area in which ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel weapons and other metallic objects may be detected. Many police offers find metal detectors to be an essential part of their law enforcement arsenal.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

If you find yourself caught without pepper spray, a stun gun, or any other self defense device, you'll have to resort to unarmed self defense moves. While this should never be done if you have a better alternative, unfortunately violence does happen, and it can catch you off guard. If it happens to you, you should know how to fight back even if you have no form of weapon handy.

Most people think they will simply escape and run away if someone attacks them. This is almost always impossible. In many cases the attacker will already have you in their grip before you realize what's happening. If the attacker has a knife or gun, they can seriously injure or even kill you as you're trying to run away from them. You'll have to incapacitate them before you can escape, either with an effective self defense device or by physically forcing them to let you go.

When you aren't carrying a self defense device, you should be aware of everyday objects that could be used as weapons if the need arises. Pens or other sharp objects, as well as your car and house keys, can be used to jab an attacker, particularly in the eyes. When trying to fight back against an assailant when you don't have a weapon, your entire body should be viewed as a weapon. Aim for sensitive areas such as the face and groin; your efforts will do more damage there than when aimed at their stomach, chest, back, or extremities.

Use punches and kicks aimed at getting your attacker to loosen his hold on you. Particular targets include the neck, eyes, and temple. Be careful with kicks; many people think that they kick more effectively than they actually do, and if you do not kick correctly the attacker could grab your leg, pulling you to the ground. Plus, most people are faster with their arms than they are with their legs, although kneeing the attacker can be a good strategy. When punching, aim for the face, eyes, and neck.

Learning to defend yourself like you see in the movies comes only with practice. Martial arts moves can give you confidence and a few good tips, but even if you are trained in martial arts, you should not rely on this to defend yourself against an armed attacker. Do not plan to knock out your assailant with one blow; even if you see it on TV, this simply is not realistic. You must land constant hits and not stop fighting back until it is safe to get away. Keep kicking and punching until your attacker stops fighting. As soon as you are able to, run away. Do not prolong the fight more than you have to.

Despite these methods, you should never plan to make unarmed self defense your only method for fighting back against an attacker. The truth is that most attackers come prepared, may be armed, and are usually stronger physically than those they are trying to attack, making it very difficult for you to succeed if you try to fight back using only unarmed moves. Even if your moves are successful, it is still unlikely that you will come out of the altercation unscathed. Carrying a keychain pepper spray canister, a small stun gun, a personal alarm, or a baton gives you a much better chance of escaping from such an attack unharmed.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Following door and window alarms, motion detectors are one of the most important security features in your home. Both indoors and out, a motion detector will alert you to anyone who is creeping around or inside your home. Many people with pets are leery of indoor motion detectors, believing that the pets will set off the alarms. The good news is that today's motion detectors are designed to be pet friendly; you won't be waking up to accidentally triggered motion detectors anymore.

Today's motion detectors are high-tech, affordable, and effective. These devices have become more dependable as the technologies behind them have advanced. There is a wide range of motion detector devices available at every price level. Here are a few types of motion detectors that you can choose for your home:

Infrared sensors, also known as PIR sensors, detect radiating heat in the vicinity. These inexpensive, reliable detectors are a standard choice for many home security systems. Microwave sensors emit microwave energy. These can penetrate walls, detecting motion even in other rooms. Quite useful for home applications, these sensors are also seen in businesses, especially in automatic doors. Dual sensors, which combine both infrared and microwave technology, have the ability to distinguish between the movement of a person and that of a family pet.

Ultrasonic motion detectors can be designed to detect motions either by detecting sound waves or emitting a high frequency sound. These are very sensitive, which can also make them more expensive than other types of motion detectors. Although they are a common choice for many applications, they are not typically used for home security because of their cost.

Shock sensors work not by detecting the movement of people, but of the air. Known as glass break sensors, these detect the shock wave created as a window is broken. These are often installed along with a standard sensor near windows or glass doors. Many home intruders attempt to enter through a window, making these areas of the home in particular need of protection using motion sensors and other security devices.

While often placed near potential entry points, in truth, these sensors can be placed anywhere in the home. Many families also choose to place motion detector alarms near the bedrooms of elderly parents or young children, to be notified if they try to leave the room at night. Some emit a very loud noise, intending to scare away whoever has tripped the alarm, while others emit a quieter noise intending to alert family members to the situation.

Motion detectors are also a useful security device for your shed, RV, or other outdoor locations to scare away potential burglars. Of course, there are also motion detectors with a bright light designed for outdoor use. These are a great option for scaring away potential intruders before they attempt to enter your home.

Motion sensors are a crucial part of a comprehensive home security system. If an intruder should ever make it into your home, it is critical to be alerted to the movement as soon as possible. Thus, indoor motion sensors play a vital role in home security.

It has long been advised that the safest place for your small, valuable objects is in a safe. If you don't want your precious documents and valuables to go up in smoke during a fire, or to be stolen during a home invasion, you'll need to somehow keep them protected from such threats. With home invasions happening every second of the day all over the country, burglaries represent a serious threat to your possessions.

Of course, the best way to protect your belongings is to keep burglars from entering your home in the first place. But what can you do once they are already inside? How can you keep them from stealing your roll of cash, your heirloom jewelry, and your passport? Sure, you could keep them in a safety deposit box at the bank, but this isn't always the most convenient option. Besides paying for the box, you'd also have to head to the bank every time you want you possessions.

If you decide to keep your valuables inside the home in a safe, you'll need one that will be difficult for the intruder to break into. Some safes offer little protection, and indeed may not offer any more protection than a cardboard box, especially if an experienced thief has broken into your home and found your safe. So what should you look for when buying a safe?

First of all, consider its size. Safes come in nearly every size imaginable, but you must make sure that all of your valuables will fit into it. At the same time, an overly large home safe will be difficult to hide, and it will be expensive. A small safe will be inexpensive and much easier to conceal. If you are concerned with water or fire damage, consider one that offers protection against these threats, although you should know that they are several times more expensive than a comparable safe designed for protection against burglars.

What about the lock? It is crucial that the burglar cannot get into your safe. Remember, sophisticated burglars may be able to break into your safe, no matter how good your lock is. Not all safes will keep burglars out, even if they give you peace of mind. Many homeowners find it a much better option to select a diversion safe rather than one with a complicated and sophisticated locking mechanism.

Diversion safes are one of the newest home security ideas. These safes are disguised as everyday objects, allowing you to hide your valuables in plain sight. They even come in forms that look like an ordinary wall socket that can be pulled out to reveal their contents. Your belongings will be close at hand, but no intruder will ever find them. You need not worry about a complicated lock if your belongings are stored in a disguised safe that no burglar can ever find.

You might think that diversion safes are only available in small sizes, and indeed there are many safes disguised to look like a pop can or other small household products, there are also plenty of options for safeguarding larger valuables. In fact, you can even choose to have several small diversion safes placed around the home to keep different types of valuables where it makes the most sense. Hide your jewelry in a can of hairspray in your bathroom, and your cash in a salt shaker in the kitchen. A thief will never take the time to look through your household products for a hidden safe.

All homeowners should be concerned about keeping their home safe at night. This doesn't just mean locking the doors and installing outdoor security lighting - the inside of your home also needs protection. Many families chose to install alarm systems to alert them to any intruders. Whether you have alarms installed or not, don't overlook the safety of those living inside your home.

Many parents are well aware of the need for night lights for children. Night lights can help you take care of a newborn without starting the baby with a bright light, or peek at a sleeping child without waking her. They are equally useful to help preschoolers find their way to the bathroom or into your room during the night. Besides the obvious safety issues, these lights can also help to chase away your child's scary monsters, helping everyone in the home get a good night of rest.

If you don't have young children, you may easily overlook the need for night lights within the home. Security night lights, either those that remain on all night or those that are activated by motion, will keep you safe if you should get up in the middle of the night for any reason. While it's doubly important to install such lighting if you have children or elderly parents living with you, every family home should have nightlights. They're inexpensive, they are practical, and they can save you from trips and falls during the night.

Besides scaring away your child's imaginary monsters and helping you find your way, nightlights can also help protect you against other unwelcome visitors. When you provide adequate lighting within your home, any burglar who can see this from outside is much less likely to enter. Still, it's important to strike the right balance between too bright and too faint, especially to avoid disturbing sleeping family members. There's no reason to leave all of the lights in the house on after dark, as long as you've installed adequate security lighting.

If you do hear strange noises, you won't be in the dark about what's going on in your home. How would you like to be frightened by coming face-to-face with a burglar in your own home, and be unable to even identify him? You'll be much better equipped to escape unharmed if there is at least a little light.

You may think that your home is safe as long as you have regular lighting with light switches in every room, but what would you do if the power went off? Power failure lights are small and handy nightlights designed to turn on when the power goes out. These can be crucial in any emergency that occurs at night.

To build safety into your home, add nightlights in every bedroom, along hallways, and especially near stairways or anything else that may be a tripping hazard. Make sure there is a nightlight in the kitchen and every bathroom, too. Consider automatic models, which turn on after dark or with movement, to eliminate the need to turn them on manually at night.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Although many people think TASER® devices and stun guns are the same thing, they are actually two different kinds of self defense devices. Stun guns must be pressed to the skin of an assailant, while TASER devices shoot two electrodes, so that they work from up to fifteen feet away from the attacker.

TASER is actually a brand name, produced by TASER International. There are several different TASER models designed for different audiences. The TASER C2, which is the newest model, is the one specifically designed for private citizens to carry as self defense. The design is meant to look sleek and ergonomic, less like a handgun or dangerous weapon. Designed to be carried in a purse or backpack, it even comes in a range of colors, including pink, red, silver, blue and more. Yet it still includes most of the features from the TASER models designed for police or military use.

The TASER C2 can be used up to 15 feet away from the attacker, and it delivers a 50,000 volt punch. With EMD (Electro-Muscular Disruption) technology, exclusive to TASER International, this jolt interrupts the body's electrical system, stopping an attacker for several minutes. TASER devices are known for being very effective against any attacker you may need to fight back against, so you can be sure that you will be protected when carrying a TASER. While the C2 is the most powerful TASER model yet, it is still a nonlethal weapon, making it a good choice for self defense.

These TASER technologies have come a long way since the 1960's, when the first TASER was developed by a NASA engineer named Jack Cover. This device, based on a stun gun, used gunpowder to fire the projectile. This first model was called the TASER TF-76. Though it was not designed to look like a gun, the use of gunpowder led it to be classified as a firearm, as a weapon available only to police. As a result, these early models did not find the wide audience necessary to make TASERs device commercially successful.

By 1993, the next generation of TASER models was being developed. This time, the model was specifically designed to use compressed air, so that it could be made available to the general public. The Air TASER 34000 was very similar to the TASER TF-76, except that it used compressed air. This TASER model was not strong enough to subdue some attackers, however, so they again went back to the drawing board to come up with a TASER model that would stop any aggressor with uncontrollable muscle spasms. The TASER M18 and M26 models, the next generation, became widely accepted as a non-lethal tool for use by law enforcement. The M18 was offered to civilians, while the M26 is a law enforcement-only model. These both resemble the shape of a pistol.

The X26C, first produced in 2003, is the latest consumer Electronic Control Device (ECD), featuring a stronger electric shock in a smaller, lighter package. It looks more like a handgun, based on the law enforcement X26 and can also penetrate up to an inch of clothing.

For many people, living on a college campus is their first time truly being independent and living away from home. Whether you are just moving across town, or are attending college across the country from where you grew up, living in an unfamiliar area can be scary. While living on your own, it is more important than ever to consider your personal safety.

Walking alone at night can be unsafe, even on a college campus. If you're walking back to your dorm, or anywhere else at night, always try to walk in a group. The presence of a group makes it much less likely that you'll be bothered. Today, many campuses also offer a free shuttle or escort if you find yourself away from your dorm at night. Even if you live off-campus, they will sometimes escort you back to your apartment.

Whenever you are out alone, leave your designer purses or clothing at home. These can be attractive targets to thieves. Walk quickly from point A to point B and stay in well-lit areas. Don't take shortcut paths that may not be well-lit, especially at night. Stay alert to your surroundings; don't walk with your iPod in your pocket and your headphones turned on. If something seems suspicious, quickly walk in the other direction, or duck into any occupied building.

Avoid excessive alcohol, especially during your first months in college. You may be excited about the newfound freedom of living away from parental influence, but alcohol can make you lower your guard, and you can be more vulnerable to physical or sexual attacks. If you're going to a party, let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.

The old adage of "don't talk to strangers" often falls to the wayside during college, especially as you go to parties and meet hundreds of new people. Be friendly, but also be aware of your surroundings. Be wary of anyone who tries overly hard to get you alone; you never know what their motives may be. Even when you're out on a date, you are still vulnerable; date rape is an unfortunate occurrence on many, if not most, college campuses.

If you do have to go somewhere at night, carry a small flashlight and some form of self defense, such as a can of pepper spray. Though most other weapons are banned on college campuses, pepper spray is a good way to protect yourself. You can even get a portable canister in the shape of a pen, ring, or other inconspicuous object. Pepper spray works just like a spray can of paint, so it's easy to use even when you are scared. These devices can get you out of a dangerous situation in seconds.

You may feel that attacks cannot happen to you, but the truth is, now is not the time to let your guard down. Always remember that college campuses are open to everyone, not just students. This means that virtually anyone could be on the campus at any time. Though you may feel safe on your college campus, it's important to be prepared for worst-case scenarios.

It is no secret that women are the targets of violence and sexual assault by a wide margin over men. Carrying products to defend yourself against such attacks doesn't have to be boring or bland. Self defense device manufacturers are finally beginning to take fashion into account, designing products in colors that appeal to women, rather than the basic black or silver devices of years past. It is no wonder that self defense products designed especially for women have become so popular.

Stun guns, pepper sprays, and other self defense devices have incorporated new features and colors with women in mind. One of the most popular women's self defense products is the new, hot pink Pretender stun gun. Both the stun device and its holster come in a fashionable, hot pink color made especially for women. A Pretender stun gun measures just four inches tall and two inches wide, or about the size of a pack of cigarettes. These appealing and easy-to-use devices can be carried in a purse or pocket for defense against any would-be attacker.

How did the Pretender get its name? Not only is this device a fun shade of bright pink, but it is also disguised as a cell phone. Because it looks just like an innocent cell phone, no one will expect its real use. Pretend to be on a call as a suspicious person approaches, or pull it out while on a date that's going downhill fast. This pretend cell phone gives you the element of surprise, right before you zap your assailant with the electric shock. Even the pink leatherette holster has been designed to make your Pretender look just like a cell phone.

Made by Stun Master, the oldest and best respected manufacturer of stun guns in the world, the Pretender line is known for being one of the strongest lines of stun guns available anywhere, with the highest voltage. Just press this device against your attacker for a few seconds and he will hit the floor, as 950,000 volts of electricity course through his body.

The Pretender cell phone stun gun also has a bright LED flashlight built in, so that you can see your way in the dark in any emergency situation. This feature is invaluable when trying to aim a stun gun at someone who has attacked you at night. This device also has two levels of built-in safety to prevent accidental discharges. To use the stun gun, just flip the safety switch and press down the trigger button, before pressing the device to your attacker.

If you're looking to defend yourself in style, check out the hot pink Pretender stun gun. Just because you want to protect yourself doesn't mean that you have to carry a bulky, boring black device. In fact, many women find such devices intimidating, even when they're the ones carrying them. No matter your self defense choice, it is crucial that you are comfortable carrying and using the device you have selected. For many women, the hot pink Pretender from Stun Master is exactly that device.

Article Title: A Comparison of Stun Guns and Pepper Spray

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Stun guns and pepper spray are two of the most popular non-lethal self defense devices. Both of these devices will immediately stop an attacker, giving you several minutes to get away, but do not cause lasting bodily harm. Both come in small enough sizes that they can be conveniently carried in your purse. If you are considering purchasing one of these for self defense, you may not know which to purchase. Should you opt for a stun gun, or a can of pepper spray?

Stun guns are very powerful methods of stopping an assailant, but because of the electrical current running through them, you should be trained before using one. On the other hand, using a can of pepper spray is just like using a can of spray paint; simply aim and press the button. Pepper spray cans are often chosen by people who would feel more comfortable using a device that is already familiar to them. Whichever device you choose, be sure that you would feel comfortable using it in an emergency situation; if not, carrying it is of no use.

Most stun devices must be placed against your attacker's skin, meaning you must be standing next to them in order for it to be effective. On the other hand, pepper sprays have an effective distance of up to 15 or even 20 feet, depending on the model you choose. However, you must aim the pepper spray at the attacker's face and have reasonably good aim, as the spray direction can be affected by wind and rain. Those which produce a wide spray rather than a steady stream are easier to use if you are concerned about your aim. Meanwhile, with a stun gun you can touch the device to any area of the attacker's body.

One factor to consider when choosing between stun guns and sprays is the appearance of the device before you have actually used it. The appearance of a stun gun may be enough to deter an assailant without you actually needing to use the device. On the other hand, a can of pepper spray is unlikely to deter an attacker until it is actually used.

Both of these devices can, obviously, be used on a human. However, if you go jogging or otherwise spend a lot of time outdoors, you may want to consider self defense devices to protect yourself against dogs, bears, or other wildlife. In these cases, a can of pepper spray is probably the better option. It is likely to deter any animals, while stun guns can have unknown reactions on animals, and in most cases mean you havr to get uncomfortably close to the animal.

Both pepper spray and stun guns are relatively inexpensive means for self protection, especially when compared to the cost of a gun. Your costs can vary widely depending upon the model you choose, although in the majority of cases, equipping yourself with a stun gun or pepper spray for your safety will cost well less than a hundred dollars.

Generally, both stun guns and pepper spray can be carried legally. Check your local police department for any restrictions on purchasing, carrying, or using these devices. In jurisdictions where there are such limitations, usually stun guns fall under heavier restrictions than pepper spray.

Those who are looking for self defense devices often find that pepper spray is their best option. Just a one-second blast of pepper spray to the face will take any assailant down for long enough for you to get away safely. Many people want to feel safe when jogging or exercising outdoors, but don't want to take a regular pepper spray canister with them. If you're looking for pepper spray in a form that's easy to take with you, consider pepper spray that has been disguised in running weights. These new "Hot Walkers" give you the element of surprise when fighting back against an attacker on the trails, and are also a popular method of protection against animals, wild or domestic, who may attack you as you run. Whether the dangers you face are from pet dogs, wild bears, or simply the common criminal, pepper spray is an essential device to help you get away safely.

Those that enjoy running or walking outdoors must consider their safety when doing so. In many cases, jogging along a trail will take you without earshot of other people at least part of the time. In these cases, it is especially important to be responsible for your own well-being by preparing yourself to deal with any issue that may arise. While it is critical to prepare yourself for self defense, you don't want to have to carry around pepper spray canisters or any other self defense weapon while you're trying to get some exercise. Regular pepper spray canisters would be awkward and a bit uncomfortable to carry with you in this situation. You probably don't go running with your handbag, so you have no good place to put it. It won't feel natural to take such devices with you on the trails. Above all, the self defense products you choose must be convenient for you to have with you when you need them.

In these situations, pepper spray hidden inside jogging weights makes perfect sense. These functional devices combine the fitness weights you would have with you anyways with the added benefit of pepper spray hidden within the weights. Hot Walkers pepper spray weights are a great choice whether you're just jogging around the block or in a neighborhood park, or are headed to a relatively secluded location. Unfortunately, many criminals know that joggers are often distracted and may not be within earshot of anyone who could help them. Gain peace of mind while out on your run by taking pepper spray jogging weights with you.

Hot Walkers look and feel just like regular weights. There's no way to tell disguised pepper spray weights apart from regular weights just by looking at them. With the press of a hidden button, your attacker will receive a shot of powerful pepper spray, stopping the altercation instantly. Plus, pepper spray weights often include a storage space for keys and money, making them even more convenient to take with you when walking or jogging outdoors. These weights help to protect your wellbeing without being any harder to carry with you than regular jogging weights.

Most people are familiar with the type of metal detectors used to find buried metal objects, as well as the type that are set up for people to walk through in stores, airports, and other areas. There is a third type of widely used metal detector, too: the handheld metal detector.

These electronic instruments are usually used to detect metal on a person's body. In many cases, these handheld models are used when the walk-through type has been set off. You may see them in airports, as people are taken from the security line after setting off the metal detector's buzzer. There, they ensure that no guns, knives, weapons, or other metal objects are smuggled onto the plane by hiding them under the clothes and simply walking through the detector.

Handheld metal detectors are available to suit many needs, although they are usually used in large establishments with many people walking through the freestanding metal detectors. They can be used in schools, courtrooms, corrections facilities, sporting events, and any other public area or event, and are especially popular for temporary situations in which installing a walk-through detector would be impractical.

The main drawback of walk-through metal detectors is that they are unable to pinpoint the location of the metal object on a person's body. Handheld versions are often a must-use device for people with various medical devices containing metal; these people will set off a walk-through metal detector even when they are not carrying additional metal objects. By waving a handheld metal detector in front of the body, moving in a methodical motion from head to toes, the metal object can be precisely located. Often, it is used as a replacement for a strip search, which can be invasive and unnecessary. Although the public may feel a little inconvenienced by this search, most people understand the need, and of course it is much preferable when the alternative is a strip search.

These devices consist of a control box, speaker, batteries, and microprocessor, connected to a shaft with a search coil. If the search coil moves over a metal object, it will set off the alarm. They work on the principle of pulse induction. A pulse is sent from the metal detector, and the response time is measured. A conductive metal will result in a longer pulse time than other materials, indicating the presence of a metal object.

Handheld metal detectors such as these have other applications, too. For example, construction crews can use them to find nails or other metallic objects in trees, reclaimed building materials, or other locations. They may even be as accurate as an x-ray in finding metallic objects swallowed by children, depending on the sensitivity of the specific unit that has been chosen. Handheld detectors cause no radiation, unlike x-rays.

Handheld metal detectors are often chosen as a direct replacement for other forms of searching. They require very little maintenance, and can be operated after just a brief training session. In addition, they are very accurate. Unlike freestanding detectors, handheld versions are portable. These multi-purpose metal detectors are a wise choice for many applications.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

TASER devices are some of the most popular self defense products on the market today. They disable an attacker through the use of electrical currents, causing the target to lose muscle control. If you're considering carrying a TASER device for your personal protection, here's what you should know about them:

    What does TASER stand for?

TASER is an acronym for " Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle," a device from an early 20th century children's book capable of firing bolts of electricity. The TASER name was first used for self defense devices by Jack Cover, a NASA researcher. In 1974, he developed the first device that would become known as a TASER.

What happens when a TASER device is used?

When you fire the device, a compressed nitrogen cartridge fires two probes at your attacker. Once they make contact with the attacker's clothing or skin, the probes send an electrical signal, at which point the attacker will lose all neuromuscular control. In under five seconds, he will fall to the ground, unable to continue the attack.

    What are the aftereffects?

All targets of the TASER device become immediately immobilized, and will fall to the ground. Some will experience a tingling sensation or vertigo. After the electrical current is applied via the probes, the target of the TASER device will feel dazed for several minutes. The physical effects of being hit with a TASER can last for up to an hour, but the TASER device causes no long-term or permanent harm.

How is this high voltage method non-lethal?

While most TASER devices have an output of about 50,000 volts, the low amperage of the TASER's electrical output results in no damage to nerves, muscles, or other body parts, while causing immediate loss of muscular control. Although a TASER is a high-voltage device, it only applies about 26 watts of power for less than five seconds, resulting in no permanent damage.

Do the probes need to contact skin directly?

No, the electrical current will still be effective as long as both probes come into contact with either clothing or skin. The current can jump up to two inches, meaning that it will even go through thick jackets and other clothing. For best results, the probes should be fired at the torso, which provides the largest target area.

What happens if the probes miss the target?

If only one probe comes into contact with your attacker, some electrical current will still flow. The amount of current depends on what material is contacted by the second probe. TASER devices can also be used as stun guns. The device itself can be applied directly to the attacker, without use of the probes. This method can be used again and again, without replacing the nitrogen cartridge in the device.

What is the range of a TASER device?

The probes should hit the attacker's body at least four to six inches apart. The probes separate further from each other as the distance from the attacker increases. For bet results, TASER devices should be fired at a target at least several feet away. With most TASER models, the optimum distance is seven to ten feet. At this distance, the probes will land about 16 inches from each other.

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Self defense methods can be broken down into two main categories, proactive and reactive. While you may tend to focus more energy on one or the other, in reality you must practice a combination of techniques in order to avoid attacks and deal with potentially violent situations.

Proactive self defense occurs before you are physically attacked. You have more time for proactive self defense, and you are at a greater distance from the potential attacker. Perhaps you see a suspicious person, or someone is walking your way. What do you do? Because the situation is not violent yet, your first choice is to avoid any kind of confrontation. Walk the other way, into an occupied building if possible. Avoid eye contact or saying anything to provoke an attack, but be keenly aware of your surroundings and the situation as it unfolds.

Proactive self defense means that you have the time to put a strategy together. Identify the threat, and take steps to avoid it. If you think that an attack is imminent, reach a hand into your bag so that your self defense device, whether a pepper spray canister, a stun gun, or some other method, is ready for immediate use. If possible, use it as your attacker lunges at you, rather than after he's already grabbed you. You'll have a much better chance of hitting your target squarely if you are not trying to wrestle away from his grip. You are well within your rights to spray your attacker with pepper spray or hit him with the stun gun if a physical attack is imminent, and you'll have a much better chance of escaping the situation if you do so, rather than letting him be the first one to attack.

Once your attacker has made his move, you are then transitioning into reactive self defense. If your self defense only focuses here, you will be unprepared to fight off the attack. Your pepper spray canister may be in the bottom of your bag, and you may not have even realized there was someone following you. You will have no time to prepare at this point – all you can do is react to the situation. Your assailant already has the upper hand by using the element of surprise. It is up to you to shift the momentum in your favor, disabling the attacker so that you can get away. Because you cannot prepare first, your heart will be racing and you may freeze up, unsure what to do. You'll have a much harder fight ahead of you than if you had practiced proactive self defense.

When thinking about how you would defend yourself if someone tried to attack you, never forget about proactive steps that you can take to avoid attack. Being aware of your situation can go a long way towards keeping you safe. At the same time, you must be prepared to handle any potentially dangerous situation that may develop. Pepper spray canister or stun guns are essential tools for reacting to these types of situations.

One of the newest self defense products to hit the market is the Mace Pepper Gun. This device uses Mace, one of the most popular brands of pepper spray, in a unique delivery system. Known as "bag-in-a-can" technology, this device allows you to shoot a stream of pepper spray from any angle. You can even hold the can upside down! Unlike regular spray cans, the pepper spray will come out in a straight stream no matter the angle of the can. This is particularly useful if you are struggling with your attacker, trying to aim the pepper spray at his face while he's trying to push it away.

Pepper Guns come in four colors, including black, silver, blue, and pink. Each gun comes with a 28 gram cartridge of pepper spray, enough to disable any attacker. This cartridge contains approximately 7 blasts of pepper spray. Replacement cartridges are available, so that you can use the same Mace Pepper Gun multiple times. It also includes a test cartridge filled with water so that you can try it out without worrying about accidentally spraying someone with the pepper spray. Replacement cartridges come in two-packs in several varieties: two pepper sprays, one pepper spray and one water spray, or two water sprays for practice purposes.

Mace Pepper Gun devices also contain a few other helpful features to make it easier to use the device against an attacker. As the constant stream of pepper spray comes out of the device, an LED light, which is activated by the trigger, helps you aim at your attacker's face. Plus, this light can temporarily blind or disorient the assailant, making it easier for you to get a clear shot. One of the problems of using regular pepper spray, accurate aim in the dark, has been rectified with the Mace Pepper Gun with the addition of this light.

Pepper Guns can spray an attacker standing up to 25 feet away. This is one of the longest ranges of any available pepper spray currently on the market. Many comparable devices shoot the spray eight to twelve feet away, meaning you must be standing much closer to the assailant in order for it to be effective. In fact, the Mace Pepper Gun is one of the only devices that can be effectively aimed from this far away with a decent chance of hitting the attacker squarely in the face. The added LED light is particularly helpful in this regard, especially when trying to aim the Pepper Gun in the dark.

Unlike most forms of pepper spray, a Mace Pepper Gun is shaped not like a spray canister, but like a gun with a trigger. This device has a particularly powerful appearance, which can give you confidence and make the assailant think twice about attacking you.

The Mace Pepper Gun has been developed with an understanding of real-world self defense situations. In the real world, you may be attacked in the dark, and you may be without a clear shot at your attacker. The design of the Mace Pepper Gun, including its ability to be used up to 25 feet away, upside down, and with a light to help you aim, makes it much more likely that you'll be able to disable your attacker, allowing you to get away safely.
