To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.
-- William Blake
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined.
As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler;
solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness.
-- Henry David Thoreau
Yes, love is the magic key of life--not to get what we want but to become what we ought to be.
-- Eileen Guder
One's life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love, friendship, indignation and compassion.
-- Simone de Beauvoir
God is like a mirror. The mirror never changes but
everybody who looks at it sees something different.
-- Rabbi Harold Kushner
There are three things which if a man does not know he cannot live long in the world: what is too much for him, what is too little for him, and what is just right for him.
-- Swahili Proverb
Recognize that you are unique in all eternity. . . .You are one of a kind ! . . . there is nobody like you anywhere on Earth today, and there never will be anybody like you in all eternity, because the Universe never duplicates itself. It all boils down to the fact that if any one of us does not fulfill that purpose for which he or she was placed on Earth, growth is slowed down because nobody can do what you do, exactly the way you do it. Very simply, that means that there is no competition.
-- Foster Hibbard
This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
-- George Bernard Shaw
Luck never gives; it only lends.
-- Swedish Proverb
The key to happiness is having dreams . . . The key to success is making dreams come true.
-- Anonymous
Perhaps, love is the process of my leading you gently back to yourself.
-- Antoine de St. Exupery

The truth is that life is hard and dangerous; that he who seeks his own happiness does not find it; that he who is weak must suffer; that he who demands love, will be disappointed; that he who is greedy, will not be fed; that he who seeks peace, will find strife; that truth is only for the brave; that joy is only for him who does not fear to be alone; that life is only for the one who is not afraid to die.
-- Joyce Carey

Justice alone, fundamental as it is, will seldom kindle holiness in a soul in which the light of love is quenched, or burns but dimly. It is justice illumined with mercy that floods the world with ineffable goodness and grace.

There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved.

By learning you will teach, by teaching you will learn.

It is not he who has lived the longest, but he who has traveled the farthest, who knows the most.
-- Armenian Proverb
To understand things we must have been once in them and then have come out of them; so that first there must be captivity and then deliverance, illusion followed by disillusion, enthusiasm by disappointment. He who is still under the spell, and he who has never felt the spell, are equally incompetent. We only know well what we have first believed, then judged. To understand we must be free, yet not have been always free. The same truth holds, whether it is a question of love, of art, of religion or of patriotism. Sympathy is a first condition of criticism; reason and justice presuppose, at their origin, emotion.
-- Amiel
I have lived on the lip of insanity, wanting to know reasons, knocking on a door. It opens. I've been knocking from the inside!
-- Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi
Love one another, but make not a bond of love;
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shore of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf;
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.
-- Kahlil Gibran
Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.
-- William Jennings Bryan
What is a good man but a bad man's teacher?
What is a bad man but a good man's job?
If you don't understand this, you will get lost, however intelligent you are. It is the great secret.
-- Lao-tzu
It is never too late to be what you might have been.
-- George Eliot
I will not permit any man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him.
-- Booker T. Washington
Trust your hunches. They're usually based on facts filed away just below the conscious level.
-- Dr. Joyce Brothers

All wisdom is plagiarism; only stupidity is original.
-- Hugh Kerr
If the mind is happy, not only the body but the whole world will be happy. So one must find out how to become happy oneself. Wanting to reform the world without discovering one's true self is like trying to cover the whole world with leather to avoid the pain of walking on stones and thorns. It is much simpler to wear shoes.
-- Ramana Maharshi
In this age of defending and demanding rights, we are often faced with the question of who holds us back more than anyone else . . . and in all honesty we must admit we are the ones. We narrow our vision and develop hopeless attitudes to defeat us. And yet, we are the ones who speed us on as well. Our good attitudes keep us moving and active and able to do everything without reacting to the smallest incident as a barrier in our way. We are willing to work, to initiate and set in motion the good of life, and do it by not stepping on others. We keep a constant vigil over our thoughts and actions. In this way we follow our 'lo qui si,' star, and reach up that we may lift others up with us.
-- Joyce Sequichie Hifler
Hope is the feeling you have that the feeling you have isn't permanent.
-- Jean Kerr
For thirty years I used to say, "Do this" and "Give that"; but when I reached the first stage of wisdom, I said, "O God, be mine and do whatever You want."
-- Abu Yazid Al-Bismati
Character is always lost when a high ideal is sacrificed on the altar of conformity and popularity.
-- Anonymous
If you want a place in the sun, you must leave the shade of the family tree.
-- Osage Proverb
A man's greatness is measured by his kindness; his education and intellect by his modesty. His ignorance is betrayed by his suspicions and prejudices, and his real caliber is measured by the consideration and tolerance he has for others.

Article Title: Link Baiting. The Stairway To Heaven Or The Gateway To Hell?

A lot of people are saying that the Web is going to Hell in a hand basket and it's things like link baiting that's taking it there.
Link baiting, if you're not familiar with the term, is the latest SEO trick that involves creating startling or controversial content that is so outrageous that people will naturally create back links to it in their blogs, e-zines and other web-based watering holes.
It's called link BAITING because it's all about creating a hook that draws back links like rotten fish heads attract crabs.
Now there's nothing wrong with creating hooks, mind you, and link baiting could certainly be classified as a white hat SEO tool if it weren't for the fact that so many people are abusing the concept.
Good hooks include humorous items, new items, articles and content about valuable resources and things like that.
But "Matt Cutts Devours Babies?", that's something else again. Who is Matt Cutts and why is he eating kids to begin with? Run his name through Google and you'll come up with this:
"Matt Cutts works for the quality group of Google, specializing in search engine optimization issues. He is well known in the SEO community for enforcing the Google Webmaster Guidelines and cracking down on link spam.
He certainly doesn't sound like a cannibal, but when that headline appeared on Threadwatch recently, no doubt posted by someone who wanted to annoy Google's Chief of Link Baiting Police, the back links started flowing like cheap wine in a hobo camp.
And what was the end result? A lot of buzz and pages of links in Google all pointing back and forth to every web site that took the bait and discussed their opinion of link baiting.
And Matt? He doesn't really eat babies.
What's the future of link baiting? It's going to keep on happening and it's up to us to self police. If you get taken in by a link baiting headline, don't give it more publicity by discussing it on your blog or sending it out to your e-zine subscribers. That's just as bad as forwarding those stupid "Bill Gates will send you $1,000" emails that come from YourFriend@AOL.com.
Be different. Be smart. Engage in link baiting but make it white hat and you'll keep your self respect and your credibility.

Article Title: The Cost of Living Allowance vs the Cost of Living Index

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a cost of living allowance and an Index?
They are ultimately intimately connected, with the one affecting the outcome of the other.
The cost of living itself is defined as the cost of maintaining your standard of living, in other words the standard that you have maintained over a period of time. Changes in the cost of living are used to determine a cost of living index. These calculations are used to compare the cost of maintaining a specific standard of living in different locations, which are then used to measure the cost of living in terms of purchasing power, which was discussed in a previous article.
When you compare the cost of living between two locations, you are in effect comparing the difference in the aggregate cost of the same selected basket groups in each location. This is done by using the average reported price in each location for the same quantity of each item within each basket, eg a cup of coffee in a 5 star hotel or the cost of one litre of the highest octane petrol. The cost of living is therefore the relative differential in the local cost of the selected baskets, at the ruling exchange rate, between two selected locations.
We tend to refer to the two locations as home and host locations. The home location is the location you are moving from, and the host location is the location you are moving to.
When you compare the cost of living between two different locations, the objective is to calculate the difference as an index. This is done by dividing the cost of the selected baskets in the home location by the cost of the selected baskets in the host location. The result is multiplied by 100 to enable the host location index to be expressed relative to the home location, with an index of 100. If the calculated host index is 130, then the host location is 30 percent more expensive than the home location, which would have an index of 100. This means that such an individual would need to earn 30 percent more in the host location than what they are currently earning in the home location in order to maintain the same standard of living and retain the same level of purchasing power that they are accustomed to in the home location.
What are basket groups (Baskets)?
Basket groups are in effect a collection of similar related items within a specific category such as transport or housing related items. The cost of all items in each basket group are gathered according to specified quantities (eg 1 litre of milk in the case of the groceries basket), reported, examined and aggregated in each location to create a cost of living index per basket group. Basket groups include Housing, Education, Recreation and Culture, Household Goods, Alcohol and Tobacco, Clothing, Communication, Furniture and Appliances, Groceries, Healthcare, Personal Care, Transport, all of which would affect the household budget of the typical expat.
A Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) is an adjustment in salary based on a relevant Cost of Living Index (COLI). When an employee relocates, they may require an adjustment to their earnings in the form of an allowance to compensate for the cost of living difference indicated by the COLI. Put simply, this allowance is referred to as a Cost of Living Allowance or alternatively a Cost of Living Adjustment. A COLA is necessary to ensure that employees are compensated for the change in cost of living for the duration of their assignment.
As an international assignee / expatriate it is vital to regularly check your salary to ensure that you are being compensated and are being adjusted accordingly. As the COLI changes, so should your COLA or alternatively your host salary.
A reliable cost of living report should calculate a COLI for the host and home locations you select and it should allow you to specify which basket groups you want to include or exclude. You should exclude basket groups that you will not be required to spend your salary on. For example if the host location employer provides housing, then housing should not form part of the COLI as the salary will not be affected by differences in the cost of housing.
A COLA report calculates how much additional allowance (over and above your current salary) you need to earn in another location to compensate for a higher cost of living, hardship and the exchange rate, in order to have the same relative spending power and as a result have a similar standard of living as you have in your current location.
Why would you want to use this type of information when moving around the world?
If you are offered a job in another country or location, it is imperative to know whether the salary offer is realistic in maintaining the standard of living you are accustomed to.
Take for example an offer for X US dollars a year in Dubai, UAE including relocation and transport, but excluding Education and Housing. Initially the offer seems great, you are ready to pack your bags and move to your new adventure. Then on further research you find that Education and Housing will take 75 percent of your salary leaving you with only 25 percent to cover all the other basket group costs. Perhaps this would not be an issue for a single person, but the standard of living would be compromised for a married expatriate with two school going children and you would need to renegotiate your package. It is obviously better to make use of a reliable cost of living report before you accept an offer rather than find out when you start working in the host location.
We recommend that you run a reliable cost of living report to calculate your required Cost of Living Allowance adjustment ensuring that you get the correct data for you move.

Most people of Alberta regard purchasing a house a financially-sound investment decision. A recent Annual RBC Homeownership Survey suggests that 89 per cent of the Albertans consider buying a home is a good investment, which is supersedes the national average of 84 per cent.
But the percentage of people with the intention of buying a house in Alberta has dropped somewhat from 31 to 22 percent within the last year.
According to RBC's vice-president and Mortgage Specialists Don Peard, this is an expected result from the study. As the changes in regulations governing mortgage rules and the economic situation has compelled a lot of Albertans to re-evaluate their decision to take an interest in buying a home.
The optimistic news is that people who have already invested have faith on the value of their investments and their ability to manage their mortgage obligations.
The poll also revealed some interesting statistics where it was found that 71 per cent of Albertans regard their community housing market as overpriced as opposed to a national average of 73 per cent. Nearly half of the Albertan population (49%) regards the housing market as balanced, which is more than the Canadian average of 40%/.
As per the statistics revealed by the Calgary Real Estate Board, so far this year, until March 25, the number of MLS sales in the city has increased by 3.45% up to 4,677 sales. Along with that, the median sale price has increased by 5.88% to $396,000 and the average sale price has also risen by 9.12%to $453,710.
Some other information was also revealed by the poll which is vital for the housing industry of Alberta. 48% anticipate the mortgage rates to go up next year and 45 per cent expect it to remain constant and only a minority of 7 per cent thinks that it will dip next year. As per as housing prices are concerned, 50 percent expect it to rise next year, while 32% expect it to remain the same and only 18 percent foresee lower housing prices. 74% people also think that regulatory changes introduced by the government will change the timing of people entering the housing market.
Across the nation, 40% Canadians who are planning to buy a house within the coming years will be first-time home buyers. Most people are just sitting back and watching from the outside for the market to settle down, and 15% are likely to take the plunge within the next 2 years. This is a 12 percentage-point dip from the high of 27% last year and reflects the overall gloomy market scenario.

The growth of internet has touched every aspect of our daily life. Today you can watch movies online while travelling in a car. The first step to publish your company product or services online is to create your own website. The created website has to be accessible to the world to see and this can be done by using a web hosting service.
What is Web Hosting?
It is a service provided by internet service vendors that allows your company to own a small space in their client server with high speed internet access. A simple web page is hosted through the FTP process. A complicated heavy website requires additional database support and use of application development software like PHP, Java, ASP.net.
Various types of Web Hosting
There are different types of web hosting services available to meet the various customer needs. Some of them are:
Free Hosting
This is ideally suited for personal or small websites and can only support small traffic. The large Internet Service Providers offer free hosting plans and they are very popular among the students. Being free there is no cost element attached to these plans but they lack good technical support and you cannot use your own domain name here.
Shared Hosting
This is the most popular form of web hosting, where many customers share one server or virtual space. Here the hosting services are economically priced and easy to use. Technical support is good and you also enjoy your own domain name as well as other additional solutions like email, database and various editing options. The limitation that you might face as a shared user is that your website traffic volume would be medium sized and security measures would not be stringent.
Dedicated Hosting
As the name suggests your company website would enjoy a dedicated server entertaining a large traffic, which is suitable for popular and medium or large sized company websites. Dedicated hosting is powerful, secure with unlimited software solutions that could be used by your company. However, it is very expensive in nature and requires high software knowledge for daily use.
Collocated Hosting
In this type of web hosting service you place your own server in the location of an Internet Service Provider. The services rendered have high internet bandwidth with good security. It is expensive in nature and sometimes there are problems to configure and debug it correctly.
Rules to choose a suitable web hosting service vendor
In the sea of Web Service Companies, it is a daunting task to choose the appropriate vendor for your company website. At the very beginning, you must decide what features are important to you. Some of these features are:
The web hosting service provider should provide with your own domain name with basic software solutions like email and editing options.
The technical support provided should be 24/7 in nature and uptime should be around 99%.
Security levels should be high.
The pricing should be reasonable.
A new trend that is growing in this segment is the cloud based hosting service using cluster server technology. This would take web hosting to a new level and make it more convenient and powerful.

I often get asked by travelers about which Grand Canyon airplane tours are the best. This is a tricky question since every flight has its own unique experiences to offer. However, after much deliberation, I have come up with a set of criteria that have let me come up with a few favorites that I heartily recommend to one and all.
First of all, you have to decide which rim of the canyon you want to see. There are two: The West Rim and the South Rim. If you are in Las Vegas, you can fly to the West Rim. If you want to go to the South Rim and leave from Vegas, you can, but you have to stop at the Grand Canyon National Park Airport along the way. You can't fly from the West Rim to the South Rim.
You can book an aerial flight over the Grand Canyon every day, even on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is rare for a flight to be cancelled, but if it is, you are likely to get a full refund or a seat on a different flight.
Vegas flights to the West Rim take less than half an hour, as the distance from the metro area to the National Park is just 120 miles. Flights come in two flavors: Air only and landing. The air tour is fantastic if you are on a budget, have limited time or want to quickly sample the best the canyon has to offer.
Naturally, I'm more inclined to landing tours for a number of reasons. Since you are visiting one of the most popular Seven Natural Wonders of the World, you definitely want an experience to remember. Taking this approach, you'll interact with the canyon from the air and the ground. By the time you've finished, you'll have a thorough understanding of the Park's greatness.
How do you know which landing tour is best? Book a flight that includes passes to the glass Skywalk bridge and takes you to the Grand Canyon West Airport where you can hop on a helicopter to descend to the canyon floor. The other West Rim trip I like lets you deplane at the top and comes with 2.5 hours to check out such key points of interest as these:
> Eagle Point lookout
> Scenic Guano Point
> Hualapai Ranch
Expect to spend anywhere from six to nine hours on landing tours like these.
Vegas to South Rim is another trip that folks love. It is a short flight that takes under an hour (if you go by bus it takes 5.5 hours) and includes a 2.5 hour bus tour to the Grand Canyon Village and Mather Point lookout. You can also add an exciting helicopter option that takes you from rim to rim.
This tour takes off from Grand Canyon Airport and is a good one if you are coming from Sedona, Flagstaff, Phoenix, or Scottsdale. This is a 45 minute air tour and it's one of the most extensive I've ever done. It covers the South Rim, East Rim and North Rim, and passes over such sights like:
> The notable Zuni Corridor
> Painted Desert
> The tallest point called Imperial Point
There are other exciting options as well such as a 15 mile float tour on the Colorado River that takes you from Glen Canyon Dam to historic Lee's Ferry, and a thrilling Jeep tour through Antelope Canyon. The great thing about this rafting trip is that there are no rapids and kids as young as four years of age can do it.
There are many aerial tours of the Grand Canyon to choose from, but the ones mentioned provide a lot of great experiences for a reasonable cost. Give them a look. I'm sure you'll find one that meets the needs of you and your group.

If you are in need of a car but with a tight budget, you may want to try checking out the latest police car auctions. No, the cars up for grabs here are not laden with bullets or smashed windows. Contrary to what most people think, vehicles found in police car auctions are considered great rides, but you can get at affordable rates.
Police Impounded Cars
Cars impounded by the police, or the other agencies such as the highway patrol, FBI, sheriff, Border Patrol, and DEA as criminals' seized properties are kept on government facilities. These vehicles are obtained through "seizure and surplus" laws, and the government wants to get rid of them as soon as possible. Since they practically got it for free, they are able to sell the vehicles to the highest bidder at very low prices. More often than not, they would want to dispose the vehicles since it just takes up space. Older models can be sold for as low as $1000.
There are several types of vehicles sold at police car auctions. Aside from cars, motorcycles, ATVs, trucks and even airplanes can be sold.
Auction Process
The auction taking place is the same as how the other vehicles are sold. You need to get in touch first with your local police department to find out when the next police car auction will be. Sometimes, notices are also posted on the newspapers so you can check that as well.
You can then find out what the requirements for registration are. Most potential bidders are asked to register for the auction prior to it taking place. At times, a small fee is also paid to qualify for bidding.
Check with the police department if they have a list of vehicles for auction. They may also allow you, if possible, to check any of the cars up for auction. Sometimes, the cars are auctioned online so checking the cars may not always be possible.
If you are going to do online bidding, check the website and inspect the specifications of the car you are looking to bid for. Check the make & model, as well as information available about the car.
Look for the car's title as well -- it is needed if you want to obtain insurance for your car. It will also let you do some research on the history of the vehicle.
The auction sites also provide information on how much the price of the car will more likely be. Take note of other amounts aside from the purchase price itself, such as sales tax, so that you have an idea on how much is the maximum amount that you will spend. The sites may also give details on what paperwork you are going to need if you have the winning bid.
A car loan can also help you bid confidently and afterwards close the sale.
Final Purchase
Don't get carried away in bidding; you might end up paying more than you expected, thus defeating the purpose on why you are joining the auction in the first place -- that is to save money, but being able to purchase a new car.

There are different types of auctions and certain types of cars up out there for bidding. However, have you heard or have you ever tried participating in salvage car auctions?
You don't have to worry -- you don't have to take part in something violent. This is all clear and legal. Risky, maybe, but it is legal.
Salvaged Cars
If you're wondering what 'salvaged cars' means, it actually means a lot of things. It could be any of the following:
• This car's cost for repairs is higher than the value of the car itself.
• This car may have been lost, stolen or both; then, the car was recovered.
• This car may have been involved in collisions or other accidents.
• This car may have been damaged due to floods or other natural disasters.
• This may have been repossessed by a financial institution due to its previous owner's failure to pay.
Some auctioneers are unable to confirm the real state of the vehicles being auctioned; however, the buyer still has the ability to inspect and check all potential vehicles prior to the salvage car auction taking place. They even encourage the bidders to look at the vehicles before they place an offer to make sure they are aware on what they are bidding for.
Tips in Buying a Salvaged Car
There are several tips to take note of before bidding for a salvaged car. These points to ponder are as follows:
• Check which exact parts of the car have been affected or damaged.
• Understand first what a salvage title is (a title given to a vehicle with damages more than or equal to 75% of its value) -- as it's given with the vehicle in most cases.
• You may want to consider getting a CarFax report. It may not have all the information, but it would contain most of the details that you need to know. The 'details' part of the report contains both frame damage and airbag deployment check, which is important if you want to check a car's status.
• Obtain a qualified inspection, both frame and mechanical. It also determines the car's value.
• Compare the cost of possible repairs to the cost of your savings. It has been said that the more work you are willing to do to your vehicle, the more you are able to save.
• The vehicle you are getting may or may not come with a key. In cases that the car won't have a key, you can still take the car's ignition to a locksmith -- they may be able to make a key for you.
• Be careful when choosing the salvage car auctions where you're going to buy your car. As much as possible, check for dealers with reputable names.
Purchasing a salvaged car can sometimes be a good option, as long as you are aware of what you're getting into. There are some advantages as well, such as not having a middleman that usually comes with buying used cars. If your budget is the main priority, then it's best to buy a salvaged car.

Article Title: Tips How to Create and Teach a Calculus Prerequisite Course

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
It is essential to have a calculus prerequisite course that gathers all the topics covered in pre calculus just in one subject. This subject is overwhelming for many students. This is because they have to have thorough knowledge of several other subjects. The student should have solid base in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Special attention should be given to binomial theorem, conic sections, complex numbers and real numbers.
Calculus is the branch of science that deals with rates of change. In algebra the student is taught about a function that represents a physical quantity, for example the amount of water in a tank relative to time. However; in calculus the interest is in the rate at which water is changing in a tank relative to time. One can see clearly how calculus completes the picture after algebra. Algebra answers one question and calculus answers a different question and they together give the whole picture.
Calculus requires that the student have a good knowledge of algebra. A good tactic in teaching algebra in a calculus prerequisite course is to point out the points that most students have problems with. Students studying algebra have particular problems with exponents and logarithms.
It is good to use calculators to do laboratory experiments to get the students to understand exponents. For example the teacher can ask the students to use their calculators to find the exponents of 0, 2, 4, 100, and 200. The students will see how the change of the output gets very steep with small changes in the input. Then the teacher should ask the students to use their calculator to plot the graph of an exponent function. The students should examine the curve and see how little change in input cause a dramatic change in output. The same experiments should be done with logarithms. The teacher should choose a base and chooses values to take the logarithms of. The teacher should let students try forbidden values like negative values and see how the calculator responds. Also the teacher should let the students plot a logarithmic function and spot the forbidden values on the graph.
Geometry is very important for calculus. The most important concept in geometry related to calculus is the area. The student should see how he can find the area of a shape by slicing it into simpler shapes and then adding the individual areas of these shapes. The student should see that we can simplify the circumference calculation by simplifying the circle by considering it a polygon. This simplification causes some error margin. However; the error decreases as we increase the number of sides of the polygon. The error becomes null when the number of sides become infinite.
Although the need of trigonometry does not come at the beginning of a calculus class students should know the basic trigonometric functions and their relations. The students should appreciate that the cosine is a sine with a shift and the sine is a cosine with a shift. They should see their graphs simultaneously on a calculator.
After knowing what should be taught in a calculus prerequisite course one should choose a suitable textbook to be assigned to the class. Choosing a textbook is not an easy task. Some students would not do well in a course only because the textbook was not friendly or easy to understand. The textbook should be easy to understand with lots of examples and starts right from the beginning. The teacher explanation of concepts should be in close resemblance to the textbook so the students do not get confused.
Foe every new concept or idea the teacher should solve several demonstration problems. This really allows the student to follow up with the ideas discussed in class.
The teacher should allow the students to ask as many questions as needed to understand. The students should know that their questions are welcome and that it is important for the teacher that they understand the concepts.
Throughout the course the students should do laboratory experiments using calculators to dissolve the concepts. They would need an algebra calculator, a basic scientific calculator and a graphing calculator. There are many new innovative software calculators like kinematics calculators and many others. These calculators allow the teacher to be creative in how he creates mathematics laboratory experiments.

Article Title: How to Teach a Course in Rational Equations For Young Students

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
The topic of rational equations is a doorway to science and engineering. It should be taught with lots of care and interest. Many students find this topic rather difficult and they can not grasp the concept behind it. The main reason for this difficulty is that it brings together difficult topics like fractions, quadratic equations and rates of change. In order to do well in this subject students should master these topics. Students who are not solid strong in these topics would most likely have difficulties.
The first problem that faces the teacher is to find a suitable textbook. It is crucial how the textbook is chosen. This is because students have difficulties even with easy subjects if their textbooks were not well chosen. The syllabus of rational equations constitutes sections in algebra books and there is no book that could be the sole reference of the course. This is why I recommend that the teacher chooses sections from various books and then write his own notes that incorporate the information in these sections.
The teacher should have two major objectives. The first objective is to make the students understand the methods and technologies used to solve rational equations. The second objective is to allow the students to understand how this is useful in our every day lives. This can be achieved by giving them a project where they can used their newly gained equation solving skills to solve areal life problem.
This will increase the students' interest in the subject by learning that after all this tedious hard work really pays and at the end of the day they can do something useful with it. In addition, they will learn how numbers and mathematics relations map into our real world.
It is good to let the students do some assignments by remote access from the internet. This will add excitement to the work and make the students at ease with the most advanced modern day technologies. Many people who were not exposed to modern day technologies when they were young are skeptical about it with out reason and tend to refrain from it. This is why I recommend exposing infants to as much modern day technologies as possible.
The course should have assignments that are varying in difficulty and the students who are assessed to be doing well should go to the higher levels and those who have difficulties should solve more problems in the lower levels till they improve. The teacher should give a quiz at the end of each topic to find which students need to work more on the understanding the techniques and which students can go on. The word problems should be the ones that solve real life problems. They should be given to the students who already mastered the techniques of solving equation.
The students that are having trouble with the basics should be gathered and given extra exercises to improve their capabilities.
In order for the students to have difficulties grasping concepts every equation solving technique should be given thorough explanation and then the teacher should conduct several examples on the same technique. The students should be allowed to ask questions in class. The teacher should show strong interest in the questions and that it is very important for him that the students understand. The teacher should set it clear for the students that they should not postpone understanding till they go home and start studying alone. They should understand everything right in class.
To make learning more interesting the teacher should do laboratory experiments using calculators. The teacher would need an algebra calculator and a graphing calculator for this subject. There are also many new innovative software calculators that are available and can do other tasks other than the traditional calculators. Some calculators can even solve equations related to kinematics. The teacher should check these calculators as well in order to create new innovative mathematics laboratory experiments.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Factoring polynomials represents the start of the core of any algebra class. It is not really the initial start of algebra but it is the doorway to success in algebra. It marks the beginning of the in depth topics. This is why special attention should be given in teaching this topic. At this point students start to make a decision whether they like algebra and would like to go further into pre calculus and then calculus and then may be have a career in engineering or science. On the other hand students may hate algebra and mathematics and decide to have a career in arts. They choose arts not because they like it but because they hate mathematics.
If one talks to old people who dislike mathematics and ask for the reason the answer is very often that they disliked their mathematics teacher or that they did not understand one of the most fundamental lessons in algebra.
The mathematics teacher should use all his skill in teaching factoring polynomials. He should put great effort in making the students understand the concepts and in making the subject exciting and fun to students. This article will cover the tactics the teacher can use to make the students both understand the subject and find it fun.
First of all the teacher has to make sure that the students got the prerequisites right for this topic. For example before getting into factoring the teacher has to make sure that the students understand and can successfully use the distributive property. In addition, they should be familiar with techniques for multiplying polynomials. This is because factoring is the same process in reverse. Factoring turns addition into multiplication and these techniques tern multiplication into addition.
The teacher should go through the different factoring methods with examples. He should start with the greatest common factor method and show that it must be applied first to any polynomial. Next he should explain the grouping method then he can turn to the difference of two squares method.
Some students are successful when they work on individual types of factoring but they run into problems when different types of factoring appear in one problem. This is why after explaining the factoring techniques there should be a session especially to explain when to use each type of factoring.
At this stage the students are ready to learn an algorithm that teaches them how to factor polynomials that are composed of three terms. Indeed factoring polynomials is done primarily by trial and error but there is an algorithm that makes this process systematic.
The first thing to do is to write down the polynomial and determine the factors of the first and last terms. Next one should create a table using all factor combinations of the first and last terms. The table should have two columns, one for the first term, and one for the last term. All factor combinations of the polynomial's first term should be in column one and all factor combinations of the polynomial's last term should be in column two. Finally the students should use trial and error with combinations from column one against column two till they get the desired factors.
To make these lessons exciting the teacher should design mathematics laboratory experiments that use calculators to check the results. If the student uses the calculator to evaluate the function at the negative value of the factoring points the result should be zero. This will imply that the factoring is correct. Also the student can plot the function using the calculator and check the roots on the graph to see if his factoring is correct.
The teacher should give students word problems of real life applications of factoring where the student can appreciate how important this is in our real world. The students can use the calculators in these problems to factor polynomials. This is to add excitement to the class and to make students at ease with the use of modern day technologies.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
The biggest challenge that faces any teacher is how to teach effectively. This is true for all teachers but it is more important for mathematics teachers because most students who dislike mathematics is because of the mathematics teacher. The education establishment is responsible for outlining course goals. However; the teacher is responsible to design how the goals will be met.
The teacher's first goal is to achieve effective teaching which is to make it easy for the students to understand the concepts. Effective teaching implies that there is a positive change in the student's knowledge of the subject. There is a good algorithm that the teacher could follow to achieve this goal.
First the teacher should outline the syllabus and choose a suitable textbook. It is very important for a mathematics teacher to choose a good textbook. A lot of the students who dislike mathematics and dislike the mathematics teacher is because they do not understand. This is why it is crucial to choose an easy to understand, user friendly textbook.
Second the teacher should complete several examples on the board for every new concept or idea. This really has a good effect on allowing the student to follow up with the concepts. Explaining several concepts with out examples would most likely turn off students and decrease their concentration with the teacher.
The students should be allowed to ask as many questions as needed during the class. The teacher should show strong interest in their questions and that he cares a lot that they understand.
The teacher should make the class more exciting by introducing laboratory experiments using calculators. There are also many new innovative software calculators that would inspire the teacher to create many new exciting laboratory experiments.
Also playing mathematics games and solving mathematics puzzles would make the class more interesting. There should be some symbolic prizes for those who score high in the games or puzzles. For example those who score to a certain level will get red belt mathematics badges and those who do better will get black belt mathematics badges. Those who do bad get a smiling face badge that encourages the student to do better next time.
Next the students should be given flash cards to help them memorize formulas. These cards should be small enough to fit into their pockets. The students should be encouraged to carry them around to be able to review them many times through out the day.
Next the teacher should give regular quizzes in order to be able to sort the students and know who understands and who does not. Those who do poorly should be given a revision of concepts and then retested to check that they have improved and can continue with the rest of the class. Those who do well in quizzes should be given symbolic rewards.
The teacher should give the students mini projects that use their mathematics skills in solving some real life problems. Mathematics is a practical subject and is very important to our every day lives. Students should recognize in these projects just how important mathematics is to improving our lives. This in itself is enough to motivate students to study mathematics.
At the end of each course the students should be given a questionnaire that asks them about their opinion of the syllabus, how useful the course was, did they understand the concepts well, did they learn how to apply the material taught in this course to real life problems, did this course contribute to their liking mathematics more, and what are their suggestions to improve the course. This feedback should be taken into consideration to constantly improve the course.

Article Title: How to Create Effective Policies For a High School Mathematics Class

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Classroom policy is an essential factor in the success of a course or even the success of the teacher in his teaching career. There is a great resemblance between the teacher and the politician. The teacher should think of himself as a politician and the students as the potential voters. It is crucial that the teacher wins the students' votes in order for the course to be successful and for the teacher to succeed in his career.
A lot of teachers concentrate most of the time on explaining concepts and doing lots of examples and are poor in other respects as classroom policies. The consequences are that the students do not pay much attention to the teaching because they find the teacher not convincing. In other words they would not vote for him. The prime reason why students find teachers not convincing is because of their classroom policies.
Classroom policies can be divided into two main categories. First are the policies and rules that the teacher declares to the students and expects them to follow and respect. Second is the unwritten rules which are his strategies in managing and handling the course. Although the second type of policies are not stated to the students they have a strong impact on how the class works out and thus influence the students' impression about the teacher.
It is very important to have clear and transparent classroom policies, particularly for mathematics courses. This is because one of the main reasons why students dislike mathematics is because they dislike the mathematics teacher and this is sometimes because his classroom policies do not work well for them.
The students should receive a document at the beginning of each course that clearly state all the classroom policies and regulations. It should have an index of content so the student can jump to the point of his interest. It should have clear bold face headings so that the main points do not get missed.
The document should contain a syllabus outline that clearly states the objectives of the course. It should contain the attendance rules and points. It should contain the homework rules and points. It should contain the dates for handing out assignments and when they should be submitted. It should also contain a suggested reference textbook and should state the titles of the handouts that the students should expect to get during the course. There should be reference to how late assignments and missing assignments going to be handled. Also it should be stated what type of exceptional circumstances that will be accepted for late and missing assignment and missing exams.
The students should be given a questionnaire about what they think of the classroom policies and how they can be improved. This questionnaire should be other than the teacher evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course. However; this questionnaire should be handed out by the middle of the term and the teacher evaluation questionnaire should be handed out by the end of the term.
The policies document should also contain information on how this class will increase the student involvement in education. It should clearly state that the student involvement will be rated and will contribute to the marks and that the student involvement will be through laboratory experiments using calculators. The dates and topics of laboratory sessions and how the students are expected to contribute to these sessions should be stated. There should be a reference to all the software calculators that will be used in the laboratory and dates of the laboratory handouts that use these calculators.
One of the most important unwritten policies is the teacher personality in class. The teacher should establish his authority early in the school year. The teacher should develop healthy boundaries between him and his students. This is because if he became the student best friend he could not establish authority in class.
The teacher should have good communication skills with the students as well as their parents. The teacher should keep encouraging students to do better and tell the parents where their sons went wrong and how to improve them.
The last point is that the teacher should have good management skills. He should manage the timing of the class and he should know that the students of the same class have different capabilities and pace in learning. This means that he has to manage each category of students with a different approach. The same approach will not work with all students.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
A Key topic at the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) annual general assembly in November was how the continents airlines could compete against bigger foreign operators within their own airspace.
What strategies could be implemented in response to the larger and more dominant overseas carriers?
Industry figures show that intercontinental capacity to and from Africa by African airlines stands at around 20% -the remainder with airlines mainly from Europe, the Middle East and lately North America. As a result of this intense competition on the intercontinental routes, the best opportunities for growth and expansion for African airlines lie in the under-served regional and domestic markets.
"In my view there are two aspects to this," said DR Elijah Chingosho, secretary general of AFRAA."Firstly, what can the African airlines do for themselves and, secondly, what can the African governments do to facilitate the growth and development of African airlines?
"Let's start with governments. In Africa the charges, taxes and levies on passengers and on fuel are very high-much higher than the world average rates."
In terms of passenger charges, particularly in Central and western Africa, he said some places were charging between $60 to $80 per passenger."So you can see that it puts African aviation at a disadvantage because, for the larger airlines to grow, we need those feeder airlines coming from domestic and regional operators that also face these high charges. We need to grow the intra-African market," said Chingosho.
He emphasized that governments need to reduce such excessive charges. Considering the high cost of fuel around the world.Chingosho indicated that worldwide fuel constitutes about 36% of operational costs for airlines globally.
"In Africa, on average, its 45 to 55% because of these various charges, taxes and levies on fuel," he added.
The second point he raised was that of the Yamoussoukro Declaration, designed to accelerate the implementation and liberalization of the air transport industry in Africa; an issue that has dragged its feet over time.
Chingosho said it was critical to fully liberalize Africa for African operators, thus making it possible to get entrepreneurs from one country to invest in another.
"So, basically, what we are saying is we need the full implementation of the Yamoussoukro Declaration because what you often find is that African governments give preferential treatment to some foreign carriers, say from the Gulf or Europe.
"For example, they allow more frequency of services by literally giving fifth-freedom traffic to foreign carriers, yet the same is denied to African carriers. If our governments are able to create a level playing field than I believe that our airlines should be able to compete effectively," he explained.
One of the main challenges facing airlines on the continent is that they are very small."We need to consolidate, we need to form partnerships and we need to forge joint ventures. We encourage such arrangements," he stressed.
He noted the example of Kenya Airways and its partnership with Tanzanian carrier Precision Air and that between Ethiopian Airlines and ASKY in Togo-basically, larger airlines buying equity in smaller partners." This way, both are able to grow," he said."It's the only way we will be able to form bigger operating entities to compete against the foreign carriers."
According to a report by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) Precision CEO Alphonse Kioko said Kenya Airways involvement in the company has allowed the carrier to access financing from banks to grow the airline in away that was not previously available. It has also benefited from staff exchanges with Kenya Airways-allowing employees to gain experience in a bigger organization .Also, an association with Kenya Airways maintenance has made it easier for Precision to lease aircraft.
ASKY gives Ethiopian a hub in the huge and fast growing West African market, rich in oil and mineral exports, not easily accessed from its home base at Addis Ababa.
Establishing the hub in Togo, a small market with little traffic of its own, was challenging and restrictions on night services meant aircraft utilization was not optimal, increasing costs. Nevertheless, ASKY has performed well, establishing good traffic volumes and load factors.
The inability to benefit from scale is a major drawback: Africa is littered with several small carriers that are crippled by their size.
Chingosho continued to stress on the fact that they must attract interest of the larger carriers.
Equity Participation
He said: "I'm aware that Air Malawi, which a very small airline, is in discussions with airlines to try and get them to buy equity participation in the company. I think that is the way to go, otherwise the smaller carriers, because of the lack of economies of scale, will go out of the market one after the other."
Outside of South Africa,(and possibly Namibia) ,airlines in the sub-Saharan region are relatively small operations with no significant operational credibility ,many of them featuring on the European Union list of banned airlines.
However, Chingosho warned that consolidation among these small carriers might not be the answer."If we ask why the small carriers don't consolidate, the thing is that they don't have much to gain from each other because they suffer from the same basic problems."
He listed problems such as under-capitalization, lack of management depth, and the lack of capacity to basically achieve industry best practice in quality, efficiency and in terms of economies.
"That's why, in my view, you need that investment especially from the bigger airlines. Apart from benefiting from feeder traffic, the larger carriers might also benefit from the traffic rights which may be granted more easily under such forms of participation."
He noted that ASKY is now viewed as a regional airline rather than a Togolese airline, which as a result has much more fifth-freedom traffic rights than most other airlines on the continent-much to the benefit of Ethiopian Airlines.
" I think its the way to go. Remove the national flag from the tail .For the countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), there could e an entity in Zambia, for instance, where you have people from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania and so on. They can all get equity into that airline, get the shareholding traded at the various stock exchanges and this way you can mobilize much more capital from the region," he said.
The SADC states are still heavily dependent on foreign airlines from the Middle East and Europe .This situation makes travel to the Southern African stopovers and delays caused through connections outside Africa.
Of concern to some domestic and regional carriers on the continent, however ,is the fear than greater liberalization of intra-African skies will benefit the four largest players-Kenya Airways ,Ethiopian ,SAA and Egypt Air-which,given their comparatively vast resources ,can quickly take the lions share of a freed-up market to the detriment of smaller airlines. As a result they perceive the big carriers as a threat to their futures rather than as protectors with a common interest of collectively building Africa's Aviation system.
Raise Concerns
What, then, is AFRAA doing to raise concerns over high charges?
"We have collected the statistics and published them because we realized that some of the governments and airport authorities were not aware that their charges are much higher than elsewhere," said Chingosho ."They can now try and work on it."
An example of this is in Angola where, according to Chingosho, AFRAA was able to get the fuel company to reduce the price by 20% .He said, as a whole; the African airline industry could save up to $ 60 million per year just by reducing some of the charges, taxes and levies on fuel.
"Also ,we are lobbying against monopoly service providers such as fuel, ground handling and catering companies, so that by stimulating competition this should eliminate monopoly pricing," he added.
Despite the slow progress implementing the Yamoussoukro Declaration, Chingosho believes it's important to highlight that there are parts of the continent seeing growing implementation."You will find that more and more countries in Central and Western Africa. Some in East Africa, too, are willing to open up their markets fully, and even to provide fifth-freedom traffic rights to those who intend to fly in their areas-so there is some progress."
He noted that the missing link with the Yamoussoukro Declaration had been the lack of an executing agency. This is now in place.
"The African Civil Aviation Commission has been mandated as the executing agency, so I believe it will be now be easier to accelerate the full implementation," he said.
The Middle East leads the expansion into Africa .In October 2012, Mozambique became the latest foray on the African continent for Qatar Airways. The Doha-based carrier inaugurated three weekly services to the country's capital, Maputo. With the discovery of large reserves of natural gas, Mozambique is today emerging to be one of the fastest growing economies in the region.
Qatar Airways operates to some 19 cities in Africa. Within just two years the airline opened up a number of routes across the continent, including Entebbe, Benghazi, Kigali, Maputo and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Similarly, Emirates serves to Lusaka and Harare in February 2012.
"What we see is that worldwide, the perception of Africa is changing," observed Chingosho."People are seeing Africa as the future growth market, the economies of Africa are rising well above world average rates and the Middle class on the continent is rapidly growing-a number that's estimated to be around 300 million people.
"Even the poverty level within the continent is decreasing .This is creating quite a big market and that is why many parts of the world, such as the Middle East ,Europe, America and Canada ,are seeing opportunities here. I can see more of them getting into the market in Africa," he said.
However, he noted the situation with Asia as different .Currently; African airlines operate more services to and from Asia than Asia carriers to Africa. Trade between Africa and Asia continues to grow: China is already the largest trading partner with Africa, surpassing trade with the US by significant margins.
Our Concern
Chingosho urged African carriers to increase presence in Asia."Our concern is that the Asian carriers will ultimately move into the African market and, unless we start going into Asia in a big way, when they come into Africa we might not be able to beat the competition from that part of the world."
At the 44th AFRAA annual assembly in Johannesburg, Kenya Airways CEO Titus Naikuni suggested that a potential offensive could be a tie up between the top three largest carriers in Sub-Sahara Africa –Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and SAA-to create a pan-African mega carrier.
Such consolidation in the airline industry is now common practice .Europe has consolidated to three major airline group-Lufthansa,Air France –KLM and British Airways /Iberia Parent IAG –in a region of 27 countries .In us ,United and Continental have come together along with Delta and Northwest. In Latin America there have been mega mergers in recent years with LAN and TAM and with Avianca and TACA.
African Airlines Association (AFRAA) is striving to ensure an intra-African airline is given birth to and airlines form mergers, partnerships and joint ventures to be able to purchase fuel, oils, spare-parts, aircraft as a group to enable them save on costs to be able to operate profitably and also be able to lower their airfares to be able to compete with foreign carriers. It has been seen that there is progress is implementing the Yamoussoukro Declaration in phases and this will liberalize the air service traffic rights and enable other airlines to operate freely within African skies. Consolidation of airlines to come up with a mega airline will also make African airlines compete with the foreign carriers both domestically, regionally and internationally. With the merger small airlines will benefit and also be able to access bank loans to expand the domestic routes by introducing modern aircraft into their fleet and phase out the ageing ones which consume a lot of fuel and high costs of maintenance.

Our clients often ask 'what are the minimum building maintenance requirements to stay within the law'. We think this mainly stems from recent high profile cases where employees have been held libel for mistakes and have not been able to hide under a corporate umbrella. Also, the small print in many insurance policies is getting more and more particular about some of these things. Looking on the web, there is no up to date summary of the building maintenance requirements, so I though I would write one myself.
Before I do that, it is worth explaining the difference between statutory maintenance and that recommended by manufacturers or codes of practice.
What is a statutory maintenance requirement?
A Statutory test or inspection is one required by law. It is not negotiable and most be complied with. Failure to comply will result in a large fine and possibly a custodial sentence for the person or persons responsible for the failure.
What is recommended maintenance requirement?
These are maintenance activities that we recommend for you building based on good practice and British Standards
Below is a summary of the statutory building maintenance requirements to stay within the law:
Air Conditioning
Have an air conditioning maintenance plan in place. Frequency depends on weight of refrigerant.
every 12 months (for buildings over 3 kg refrigerant)
every 6 months (for buildings over 30kg refrigerant)
every 3 months (for buildings over 300kg refrigerant)
European Union F-gas Regulation No. 842/2006
Gas Equipment
All commercial gas appliances to be inspected annually.
Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998
Water/ Legionella
A valid Legionella Risk Assessment in place. These are valid for 2 years. Monthly testing of water temperatures. A 'responsible person' should be identified and suitably trained. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1988
Emergency Lights
System must undergo a 3hr drain down test on an annual basis after which a level of 1.0 lux, is required at floor level for defined escape routes. Monthly temperature tests are also recommended.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
Fire Systems
A Fire Risk Assessment must exist and be reviewed at regular intervals. A 'responsible person' should be identified and suitably trained. All Automatic fire detection systems are required to be tested and maintained. Record keeping of service visits / inspections and weekly "Bell testing" should be kept.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
Lifts
All lifts provided for use in work activities are thoroughly examined by a competent person at regular intervals.
The Lifting operations & lifting equipment regulations 1998 (LOLER) Regulation 9.
Lightning Conductors
All lightning conductors and earth grounding installations should be visually inspected and tested at regularly fixed intervals, preferably not exceeding 12 months. The testing is carried out to BS 6651.
Section 5 of Electricity at Work Act 1989
What are the penalties for non-compliance?
These can be huge for your and your company, ranging from fines and imprisonment. These maintenance activities have been proven to save lives and reduce injury. Hence why they have been written into law.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
For individuals who have gone through a surgery or specific injury, the road to recovery can be filled with a variety of challenges, successes, doubts, and triumphs. It also may be peppered with exercises – from the simplest, most basic movements in the beginning, to more advanced activities when the body is eventually ready. Each physical therapy patient requires a unique approach and specialized program, but one type of exercise that is becoming increasingly popular with those in the latter stages of the therapy process is kettlebell training.
What is a Kettlebell?
As the story goes, the kettlebell originated in Russia as a farming tool. Essentially, a kettlebell is a cast iron weight in the shape of a ball with a flat spot on the bottom and a handle attached at the top. Kettlebells can range in weight from nine to 100 pounds or more. The design of the weight makes it different from traditional dumbbells or a standard weight plate because the mass of the kettlebell is not evenly distributed. Also, the handle allows for the kettlebell to be picked up with one hand or two, where it can then be lifted, rotated, or swung in a number of different ways.
How can Kettlebell Training Help my Physical Therapy?
While it is typically not advisable to engage in kettlebell training during the initial phases of any physical therapy program, as a patient begins to recover and the therapy is permitted to become more rigorous, kettlebell training can become a great asset. During the phase of physical therapy aimed at decreasing pain, increasing joint range of motion and muscular flexibility, and restoring strength, kettlebells can be used in place of dumbbells or barbells while performing some traditional exercises like squats or lunges. Furthermore, as a patient progresses through this stage of his/her therapy program and into more advanced strength and power training activities, kettlebell exercises may be used more frequently. Incorporating functional acceleration and deceleration movements like the kettlebell swing is a great way to help the patient gain strength in their muscles.
Kettlebell Basics
The reason that the kettlebell is so effective when used properly is because it forces the patient or athlete to counterbalance and stabilize their body during the exercise. Kettlebell exercises are able to help develop muscle strength as well as increase cardiovascular endurance because athletes must utilize several major muscle groups in order to maintain balance while completing a movement. It's the kettlebell's offset center of gravity that makes it so demanding, requiring effort from the arms, pectorals, abdominals, back, and shoulders during exercise. However, it is important to learn proper technique when working out with a kettlebell. Swinging, lifting, or rotating an iron ball that weights 10, 20, 40, or more pounds for any amount of time without proper technique can pose the risk of further injury. Therefore, be sure to follow all of your doctor's orders during your recovery process. Working with a certified trainer is also a great way to ensure your technique is sound and reduce the chance of injury.
Kettlebell Exercises
One of the most beneficial exercises a patient can complete is the kettlebell swing. In this exercise an individual grasps the kettlebell with one or both hands while it rests on the floor. Standing directly above the kettlebell with feet shoulder-width apart, the patient begins with bent knees and a flat back. The goal of the exercise is to be able to swing the weight through a large arc of motion, from the floor to overhead (or to at least shoulder height, extended out in front). To initiate motion, the athlete should stand up while pulling the kettlebell forward. For the first repetition, once the weight has reached a height of the knees, it is swung back between the legs. This is followed immediately by a reversal of direction, using a drive from the legs and hips to propel the kettlebell forward and upward to complete the movement, repeating as many times as prescribed. Other examples of kettlebell exercises include kettlebell snatches, kettlebell lunges, kettlebell squats, kettlebell push press, and the Turkish get-up.
Learn More
If you'd like to learn more about kettlebell exercises and whether they might make a good addition to your physical therapy routine, talk to your doctor and/or physical therapist for more information. It is always advisable to contact your doctor before engaging in any new or additional exercises during your physical therapy program to avoid the chance of further injury.

As waistlines and obesity rates continue to grow throughout America, so too does the need for professional dietitians and nutritionists. If you want to help find the solution to America's diet and nutrition crisis, a great way to do so is to become a qualified dietitian or nutritionist and empower people through education. The only way to correct the problem that the country is currently facing in terms of obesity-related health problems is through dietary change. However, many people eat the way they do simply because they do not understand the damage they are doing to their bodies or recognize the power that an improved diet can have on their overall health and quality of life. Becoming a dietitian or nutritionist can put you in a position to change that by directly coaching or advising individuals, or working with community agencies, schools, colleges, or private companies to educate people on how they should be eating and why good nutrition is important.
Educational Path
The process for becoming a dietitian or nutritionist is similar to that for any healthcare career. You will begin by earning a bachelor's degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, food service, public health, or a related field. As part of your studies, expect to focus much of your education on chemistry, microbiology, and physiology as you attempt to understand what is in the food we eat and what effect it has on the body and its different processes. Once you have obtained your bachelor's degree, you may choose to become a registered dietitian through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which requires you to fulfill a six- to 12-month supervised internship and pass an exam. This license is required in 46 states, so it is worthy of strong consideration.
Getting a Job in the Field
Once you have your degree and proper credentials, you can seek employment in the field of dietetics and nutrition. The good news for anyone in this field is that the job prospects are growing steadily. This is a result of large organizations understanding that preventative health care is much more cost effective and efficient than the treatment of serious health problems caused by poor diet and obesity. Professional dietitians and nutritionists are in demand because they are able to help shape the way these organizations educate their members or employees on the importance of a healthy lifestyle and ways to achieve it. As your career develops, there is room for advancement within the field as you gain experience. You might find yourself in a management position to help enforce health policies within an organization. On the other hand, you might choose to start your own business in order to help people or groups with their health decisions through various forms of media.
Weighing Your Options
Working as a dietitian or nutritionist is perfect for anyone who lives and appreciates a healthy lifestyle themselves. Furthermore, an interest in science is a plus because you will be closely studying the composition and nutritional properties of a broad spectrum of foods. Finally, this field is related to an integral part of everyone's daily life: food. You may feel a sense of goodwill as you will be helping people make good dietary choices and live healthier lives. However, you will spend much of your time coaching people to change their dietary habits, and that can prove to be very difficult. Also, there will be an expectation that you stay current on the most recent findings within the field, so you must commit to continuing education throughout your career. Despite these potential challenges, a career as a dietician or nutritionist can be extremely rewarding. If you'd like to learn more about this exciting career path, contact a nearby college or university or research online for more information.

Article Title: What to Expect From a Surgical Center

Whether you're planning to undergo a routine procedure to treat a foot issue or require back surgery to treat spinal cord compression, the surgical center you choose will play a large role in your pre- and post-operative experience. Deciding to undergo any form of surgery can cause a certain level of stress and anxiety, but when you know what to expect from the surgical center you choose, most of your stress and anxiety can be allayed.
Highly Qualified Surgeons
One of the most important factors that should go into choosing a surgical center is confirming the expertise of its surgeons. Undergoing surgery is scary enough without having to find out at the last minute that your surgeon has only performed the procedure a handful of times before. You can eliminate this possibility by researching the surgeons employed at the surgical center. Find out how many years they've worked at that particular center, how many years they've been in practice, the number of times they've performed your procedure, and what their success rates are. It's also incredibly important to confirm that the surgeons are board certified in the specific area of surgery they perform. This means that he or she has met or exceeded nationally recognized educational and patient care standards.
Friendly, Helpful Staff
Any surgical center you consider should be staffed by qualified, friendly administrative professionals, nurses, and others. If the facility is truly dedicated to ensuring patient satisfaction, all of your experiences dealing the staff – whether on the phone, at the reception desk, or in the post-operative recovery room – should be nothing short of pleasant.
Comfortable Examination Rooms
No one likes to go through an exam in a cold, stark examination room. Ask the surgical center you're considering how well the pre- and post-operative examination rooms are appointed. Are there extra chairs for family members if you chose to have them with you? Are the rooms kept at a certain temperature? If you'll be asked to disrobe, what type of covering will you be asked to wear? Are examination instruments and tools disinfected or discarded after each use? Asking these and other questions can help you gauge exactly what level of comfort you'll experience during an examination.
Operating Rooms with Advanced Technology
When you're researching surgical centers, don't be afraid to ask about the types of equipment in the operating room. After all, you are putting your life in the hands of surgeons, so you are allowed to ask about what equipment they will use to perform your procedure. Surgical centers that feature current, state-of-the-art equipment – and have properly trained surgeons to use them – should be high on your list, whereas those using out-of-date equipment, which could pose a higher risk for malfunctioning, should be ruled out.
Favorable Former Patient Reviews
It's true that you shouldn't believe everything you read online, but reading some reviews posted by former patients of a particular surgical center can help you make an informed decision. Keep in mind that one or two bad reviews won't necessarily mean that a facility and its staff are terrible. You should instead look for a pattern; facilities with mostly favorable reviews are probably worth keeping on the list of considerations, but those with more than a few bad reviews may not be worth checking out.
Location & Amenities
Finally, when considering surgical centers, think about the proximity of the center to major airports, hotels, hospitals, and attractions, particularly if you'd have to travel a long distance to get there. Additionally, surgical centers that feature amenities for patients and their guests – such as comfortable waiting rooms, cafeterias, Wi-Fi access, and others – can provide that extra special touch and level of comfort that can help you feel more at home.

Living with neck or back pain is not fun, so the thought of surgery as a treatment method has likely crossed your mind. Take comfort in knowing you're not alone. Millions of Americans experience some form of back pain in their lives, whether low-level, long-term aches or severe neck or back pain that flares up in short-term, intermittent episodes. This disparity in the severity and frequency of symptoms is largely due to the sheer number of conditions that can cause neck and back pain, such as a muscle strain or a herniated disc that is compressing the spinal cord or a nerve root.
Regardless of the cause and type and level of pain you're experiencing, it's important to keep in mind that any form of spine surgery probably won't be your first treatment option, nor may it be the best option to treat your symptoms. It's likely your physician will suggest that you first attempt a number of nonsurgical treatments to seek pain relief.
Try Conservative Treatments First
Before spine surgery becomes a topic of conversation, your physician will probably expect you to complete several weeks or months of conservative (nonsurgical) treatments. Conservative therapies are widely regarded to be highly effective methods of symptom mitigation by most members of the mainstream medical community. You'll most likely find relief from your pain after attempting one or more of these types of treatments.
The exact treatment plan that your physician recommends will depend on the specific spine condition you have; the severity, frequency, and location of symptoms; and your level of overall health, among other factors. In general, however, your physician may recommend that you attempt one or more of the following treatments:
• Corticosteroid injections
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
• Hot/cold therapy
• Physical therapy
• Low-impact exercise
• Narcotic pain medication
Consider Alternative & Complementary Treatments
Another category of treatments you may want to consider to combat neck and back pain include complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies. The efficacy of CAM treatments is continually up for debate within the mainstream medical community, largely because there is little scientific evidence available that confirms their true ability to mitigate neck and back pain. Still, many individuals with neck and back pain have reported finding significant relief with CAM treatments methods, whether used in combination with or in lieu of conservative therapies.
Some of the most common alternative methods include:
• Acupuncture
• Therapeutic massage
• Manual chiropractic adjustments
• Meditation
• Relaxation therapy
• Aromatherapy
• Biofeedback
• Acupressure
• Reiki
• Hypnosis
• And more
It's best to consult your physician and/or a qualified CAM practitioner before you attempt any CAM treatments, particularly if you're taking certain medications or herbal supplements.
When Nonsurgical Treatments Fail to Provide Relief
If several weeks or months of conservative and/or CAM treatments are unable to mitigate your neck or back pain, surgery may become a treatment option for you. You should explore a number of spine procedures that may be available to you, including open spine surgery and state-of-the-art endoscopic procedures. The procedure or combination of procedures that your physician or a spine specialist suggests will ultimately depend on your condition, the severity of your symptoms, your overall health, and other factors.
Do Your Research
Before you commit to any spine surgery, it's important to research all of your available surgical options. Take time to understand the procedure(s) that are suggested to you, as well as all of the advantages and disadvantages associated with each. For example, open spine surgery is highly invasive, requires a large incision in the neck or back, muscle dissection, and can lead to a difficult and lengthy recovery period.
Alternatively, a minimally invasive procedure requires only a small incision and no tissue dissection, which allows patients to typically enjoy a quicker and less painful recovery when compared to open spine surgery.

Going to work every day not only can presents challenges during your commute and when dealing with coworkers, but can also seriously disrupt any attempt to eat healthfully. Making the right food choices can be that much more difficult when you're stressed out and crunched for time. But, if you're armed with some good ideas and can devote a few hours each week to meal and snack planning, you'll be able to maintain a healthy eating plan more easily.
Eat a Good Breakfast
Your mother always told you to eat breakfast, and she meant it. Don't start skipping breakfast just because you're late for work and don't have the time to create a more time-intensive morning meal. Breakfast doesn't have to be a big buffet, but what you eat should be packed with protein to help you jumpstart your day and help keep you fuller longer.
When you first wake up in the morning, drinking one or two large glasses of water can help get your metabolism going and prepare your body to accept food after being asleep. Next, whether you eat at home, on the way to work, or in the office, choose protein-packed breakfast options such as smoothies, protein shakes, or even scrambled egg whites with vegetables. Yogurt, particularly Greek yogurt, has lots of protein and is another great meal option when paired with a little honey and berries of your choice.
Choose Healthful Snacks
There's nothing worse than having a pang of hunger before its lunchtime or before you clock out for the evening. Instead of running to the vending machine for M&M's or a bag of chips, you can combat hunger with a healthful snack.
Sometimes, eating a piece of fruit with plenty of fiber, such as an apple or a banana will satisfy your hunger without packing a lot of calories. When you need a slightly more substantial snack, consider a handful of almonds and dried cranberries, or even a few whole-grain crackers with a light cheese spread or peanut butter smeared on top.
Eat Light at Lunch
A cheeseburger and fries may be calling your name come lunchtime, but eating heavy, greasy foods will only slow you down the rest of the day and may even make that urge for a quick nap become stronger. Instead, try to plan ahead and buy lighter lunch options when you do your groceries and bring food to work. Salads are always a great option, especially when you make them interesting. Instead of just throwing lettuce and tomatoes together, try cutting up some grilled chicken, slicing up some cucumbers, and adding some feta cheese and olives. Pour a little homemade oil and balsamic vinegar on top and you've got a basic Greek salad that sure to taste great and keep you full without that heavy feeling. Pairing healthy vegetable soups and half sandwiches or a few crackers is another lunch option to consider.
If you'll be in a business meeting where lunch is provided, or must bring a prospective client to lunch, it's still a good idea to choose options that won't weigh you down. If food is prepared for a business meeting, choose foods that have whole-grains (think wheat bread-based finger sandwiches), lean meats and/or veggies, and have little or no mayo. Skip the bag of chips and opt for a piece of fruit. If you're dining out, avoid heavy cream-based pastas and soups and instead go for salads with chicken or fish, turkey burgers, or other light options.
Stay Productive
Eating healthfully at work may seem like a drag, but you'll see that bringing healthy foods or choosing them as best you can when business requires you to be out of the office, can help you stay alert, stave off hunger, and allow you to be more productive throughout the day.
