L-carnitine is a bioactive substance that naturally occurs in the human body, being at its peak in infancy and dwindling with age. It has to do with how we effectively utilize fat reserves and fatty acids in our body as source of energy, and thus its use as an active ingredient in supplements designate its function to rid the body of unwanted fat tissues. Today neutraceutical companies commercially tout its effectiveness in conjunction with most weight-loss regimen, but this chemical compound in fact performs a lot more vital functions at the cellular level.
Energy reserves of certain animals, human beings included, are stored in tissues that are more often than not associated with visible fats on body surfaces. Truth is what we refer to as body fats are a class of connective tissues called adipose that can be found in almost all body parts. The most visible of all fat depot are subcutaneous, those stored under the skin.
Energy Production
Fats are a group of biomolecules necessary for human life. Low-fat diets are not beneficial in the long run especially for people who look virtually stripped of fat. Lipids in the form of fatty acids are implicated in the body's mechanism to digest and ultimately absorb many different nutrients from the foods that we eat such as the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. More importantly, fat reserves come to our defense in times of sickness, being a significant source of energy when our intake of food drops.
Having healthy levels of L-carnitine is the reason why some people seem to not get fat at all. This bioactive compound is responsible for speeding up metabolic processes in our body, making us feeling in the prime of life. L-carnitine has something to do with the energy of the young, and becomes less and less available in our body as we age. The presence of L-carnitine inside the cells translates to faster production of energy, leading to more efficient cellular functions.
Fat Loss
Every cell in the human body contains a certain level of fat molecules, which are distributed from the intestinal walls for cellular health and functions. Some of the food sources that we consume do not get readily converted into energy and other bioactive substances for use by our body, but are put away in adipose tissues and nutrient stores instead. The more we consume foods of this sort the more we contribute to the buildup of these tissues until we see undesirable fats in the thighs, belly, and other parts.
L-carnitine is directly involved in the breakdown of fats. All cells contain an intracellular fluid called cytosol where fatty acids are stored, but not all of these fat molecules are utilized owing largely to low levels of L-carnitine in adults. Adequate levels of L-carnitine allows the body to burn the body's fatty tissues in that L-carnitine is responsible for the continued transfer of fats stored in the cytosol to the mitochondria, the factories that convert fats to energy.
The amino acid L-carnitine is available in capsule, tablet, powder, and liquid forms at your local or internet vitamin store.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
L-cysteine is a common amino acid biosynthesized in all mammals, playing an important role in the molecular structures of proteins. In recent years it has been used extensively in the pharmaceutical industry, for instance, against the bad effects of alcohol on the liver, but it has long been an ingredient in practical cooking since prehistoric times, contributing to the flavors in cooked foods when amino acids react with sugars, noticeably in roast meat and baked goods.
While it is believed to be manufactured by the human body in amounts sufficient to support body functions, there are individuals whose systems are not able to properly produce L-cysteine due to the absence of the needed precursors, micronutrients, and other bioactive substances. Hence, supplementation is recommendable to people with symptoms of nutrient malabsorption in order to ensure healthy levels of L-cysteine in the body.
Liver and Free Radicals
All the processes in our body that require a change in the oxidation number of atoms are collectively called oxidation-reduction, which at the same time gives rise to reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides. Reactive oxygen species are molecular entities that are in fact employed by the body as tools against pathogens like bacteria, archaea, and other known microbes, also including viruses. In addition, the liver's exposure to alcohol increases releases of reactive oxygen species.
The body makes use of substances that deactivate the effects of free radicals and peroxides just when the latter group is done with eradicating harmful stimuli, but our system fails to release these endogenous substances in times of distress when the body is not able to cope with the stress we experience every day. This is when the antioxidant properties of L-cysteine among others are utilized by the body, and supplementation enhances our defenses against raging free radicals and peroxides.
L-cysteine and Acetaldehyde
The application of L-cysteine for the upkeep of liver cells stems from the fact that it acts against the harmful effects of acetaldehyde in the human body. Alcohol content is measured by how much ethanol is present in beverages. The principal intoxicating agent in liquors is ethanol, which is a known depressant in the central nervous system and a precursor of acetaldehyde.
The breaking down of ethanol is one of the most complex processes in the body. Ethanol passes through the stomach walls upon ingestion and immediately enters the circulatory system. Ethanol metabolism takes place in the liver, which converts ethanol to acetaldehyde before the body converts the latter to acetic acid and other bioactive substances. Acetaldehyde is more toxic than ethanol, and quite destructive at that, being directly involved in the formation of free radicals.
We are subjected to the effects of acetaldehyde on a daily basis as our body produces alcohol in small amounts. While the liver recuperates fast, continued exposure to acetaldehyde result in liver damage, the reason why alcoholics ultimately develop diseases of the liver. L-cysteine reverses the damage brought on by alcohol by reducing the toxic effects of acetaldehyde.
L-cysteine is available in capsule or tablet forms at your local or internet vitamin store. Always look for name brands like Source naturals or Now foods to ensure quality.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
L-arginine is one of the amino acids most widespread in nature, and involved in varied tasks of biological significance in heterotrophs such as human beings. The scientific community is convinced that the body produces the right amounts of L-arginine under normal circumstances, but also points out that individuals with unhealthy levels of L-arginine must get this chemical compound from their diets, infants included. The presence of L-arginine in the human body must amount to concentrations sufficient to support bodily functions such as healthy circulation and blood flow.
Poor nutrition is associated with low levels of L-arginine, which in turn has been associated with most cases of high blood pressure. Blood pressure is one of the most important measures of physiological functions adopted by modern day medicine, and more often than not pertinent to the assessment of human health and medical conditions. While there are no identifiable causes of high blood pressure, the use of L-arginine in treatment of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension has been common place.
Endothelium-Derived Relaxing Factor
What are the principles that led to the utilization of L-arginine against diseases of the circulatory system? Endothelial tissues are a thin lining of cells on the inner surface of blood vessels exposed to the inside space where blood flows and lying just next to the smooth muscle cells that do most of the pumping. These tissues are found everywhere in the circulatory system, including the heart and even the smallest of all blood vessels, and are responsible for stimulating the smooth muscle tissues beneath them to perform mechanisms that decrease the randomness of blood flow.
The endothelium releases a mixture of substances referred to as EDRF, the abbreviated form of endothelium-derived relaxing factor, resulting in the vasodilation of the smooth muscle tissues of the blood vessels. EDRF is in fact nitric oxide that plays the key role of a biological messenger not only in human beings, but in all animals with backbones and spinal columns. With or without a combination of compounds, nitric oxide induces the blood vessels to widen as the smooth muscle tissues relax, promoting an increase in the flow of blood and, of course, a decrease in blood pressure.
L-Arginine and Nitric Oxide
The efficacy of EDRF in connection with its mechanisms that relax the smooth muscle tissues has been attributed to nitric oxide, in itself active in other animals in the same manner, and the production of nitric oxide in the human body is governed by the availability of the bioactive compound L-arginine. EDRF is an endogenous substance that is synthesized inside the body, but L-arginine can be absorbed from an outside source.
Individuals who don't meet their nutritional needs have been reported to have low levels of L-arginine, and, if suffering from cardiovascular diseases or hypertension, their endothelial cells do not respond effectively to the chaos inside the blood vessels. L-arginine in supplements is a significant precursors of nitric oxide used as EDRF by the endothelium, promoting an overall circulatory health.
L-arginine is available in capsule, tablet, powder, and liquid forms. Look for quality L-arginine at your local or internet vitamin store.

Article Title: Is Iodine Found in Kelp Good for the Thyroid?

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Kelp is delicious seaweed that has been a part of diets of communities close to the ocean since prehistoric times. It has high concentrations of nutritional iodine present in hormones released from the thyroid glad that is believed to influence physical growth and development in individuals of school age. In fact, those who can't get their hands on seafood, people in the highlands for example, are reported to suffer ailments resulting from iodine deficiency.
Kelp forests are a group of kelps that are marine species classified as brown algae that thrive along much of shallow coastal waters, making them ready food source of islanders and human populations along the coast for centuries. They are multicellular organisms but possess a noticeably simple anatomy, consisting of long stem-like structures that support the leaf-like blades and a root-like formation at the base. Each stem extends up to 80 meters, growing at a notably high rate of half a meter in a day on average.
Culinary Significance
Its culinary use has been recorded as early as the 7th century BC, but it has been incorporated to coastal cuisines much earlier, historians noting their value as food to have been discovered in the prehistoric times. European societies in the subarctic regions, the Scandinavian countries in particular, have enjoyed the time-proven health benefits of kelp that is now known as organic iodine.
Edible kelps have been of special importance in the diets of North Asian peoples, especially in Japan where natives believe that it is fundamental in achieving the authentic flavor of the local cuisine. As early as the 12th century AD when the Japanese learned a drying technique that allows it to be stored for a couple of days, trading of dried kelp began between ethnic groups of Japanese islands and the Korean peninsula.
Iodine and Thyroid
What the Japanese call the distinct Japanese taste was actually pointed out in the discovery of umami, identified as one of the five basic tastes sensed by the human tongue in addition to sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. Incidence of iodine deficiency is a rarity among the Japanese as they savor the tastes given off by soup and broth stocks formulated from kelp. Apart from iodine, kelp is a rich source of glutamic acid, an amino acid that plays a key role in learning.
The manufacture of hormones in the thyroid gland requires the participation of elemental iodine. The absence of iodine in the body incapacitates the thyroid's ability to produce its hormones in that iodine is in fact a part of the molecular structure of these hormones. Very low levels of thyroid hormones in the blood signal the brain for increased releases of thyroid, and the brain in turn signals the thyroid gland to produce more.
The ensuing chemical reactions result in the swelling of the thyroid gland, which lead to more serious conditions such as goiter, fatigue, and mental retardation. The Japanese have always relied on kelp as a vegetable source of readily absorbable iodine.
Kelp is available in capsule or tablet forms for easy consumption. You can find kelp supplements are your local or internet vitamin store.

Article Title: How Does Iron Help With Anemia?

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Anemia translates as lack of blood. While it results from a number of underlying causes, it is most commonly associated with low levels of iron carried by molecules in the blood called hemoglobin, which comprises a significant fraction of the total volume of each red blood cell. In fact, iron is an elemental substance so essential in the human body that tissues and organs deprived of iron will not sustain damage for long periods of time, resulting in the death of the individual sooner than the complete depletion of iron.
Sixty to Seventy percent of iron present in the human body is contained in the blood, where it allows hemoglobin to play the indispensable role of carrying around oxygen for use by tissues and organs. Every day we lose a steady portion of the iron reserves in the body by way of the sweat glands and, in women, during menstrual periods. With that, whatever is left gets transferred to the red blood cells.
Intake of iron does not mean absorption inasmuch as the amount that ultimately gets digested by the intestinal walls is relatively low. Depending on the individual's iron levels, the amount that is digested are either stored in the intestinal linings or transported to the rest of the body. Free iron at high levels damages cells in the liver, heart, and other organs, the reason why the body regulates each step in its digestion. Healthy concentrations of iron in the body signal the digestive tract to dispose of much of the iron stores in the intestinal linings together with other waste products, what is left is absorbed.
One common factor of most cases of anemia is the decrease in the amount of hemoglobin in the blood, and all individuals with iron deficiency suffer from this condition. How healthy red blood cells are is determined by the amount of hemoglobin it contains, the red color of the blood being produced by protein molecules that contain hemoglobin. The manufacture of red blood cells occurs in the bone marrow, and a significant amount of iron is stored therein. At times when the amount of iron is insufficient, the bone marrow creates fewer red blood cells, consequently leading to anemia.
How is iron an important composition of the blood? Red blood cells perform their function in the circulatory system only until around a hundred days. The life of red blood cells begins in the bone marrow, which replaces dysfunctional red blood cells in the bloodstream at any given time. The principal task of red blood cells is to pick up oxygen from the lungs and deliver it to the rest of the body. The capacity of each red blood cell to carry a certain amount of oxygen is directly governed by the amount of hemoglobin it contains. The higher the amounts of hemoglobin, the more efficient red blood cells become. The lower the levels of iron in the body, the lower the amounts of hemoglobin are contained in red blood cells.
Iron comes in convenient capsule or tablet supplement form at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Solaray or Source Naturals to ensure quality and purity of the supplement you buy.

Protein supplements are what you need if you are serious about getting as much protein as possible in less time. What for? It's no secret that those who are into bodybuilding incorporate supplements specialized for muscle growth into their nutrition plan. Bodybuilder or not, everyone may take advantage of supplementation of protein. It's like eating more foods high in protein minus all the other unwanted substances that come with these foods such as carbohydrates and fats.
Just as the sources of supplements of protein are completely different, not all forms of protein supplement are equal. Walking in to a shop that caters to bodybuilders and the health buff population, someone who is new to the idea of protein supplementation may find it surprising to learn that there is a quite long list of protein supplements out there. Protein powders and pills may come from dairy products like whey or from legumes like soy and pea.
Protein Levels
What you should probably think of first is the protein content that you want your body to get from a supplement. In the old days when extracting and separating protein from the rest of the substances that make up the food source was difficult, people had no choice but to take all these substances even in supplements. However, much has changed since and today you are very likely able to find protein isolates from whey, which consist of up to 90 per cent of protein content, the highest among all protein supplements.
Bioactive Substances
One thing that you should know upon choosing the right protein supplement for you is its formulation. Are you looking for something that has high levels of other bioactive substances such as lipids and starch? Or do you want to avoid them? Whichever is your choice, whey protein has all your concerns taken care of as it comes in different formulations, whey concentrates having considerably low levels of cholesterol, for instance. The good thing is that powders from whey are developed entirely from the dairy product without the addition of synthetic substances.
Biological Value
The initial reason why bodybuilders love whey protein is its biological value, the amount of protein that is ultimately absorbed by the intestinal walls and incorporated to the human body, for example in the muscle bulk that you see. Soy protein is the earliest form of protein supplement but up to now remains less favored largely owing to its low biological value. Whey, being an animal product, is a ready source of protein to the human body.
There are a number of protein supplements in the market today, but whey protein has no doubt been the most popular choice among practitioners of bodybuilding for decades now. Those who opt to take other sources may have deep-rooted moral principles in favor of non-exploitation of animals, vegans for one. That being said, protein powders formulated from whey gives more reasons to consider whey supplementation, not to mention offers more choices to choose from.
Always choose quality whey protein when looking to increase protein intake. Whey isolate is the highest quality you can purchase.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Spirulina has generated a great deal of buzz in the neutraceutical community and medical circles in recent years, and for good reason. It contains an unusually high content of a variety of nutrients and other bioactive compounds. Studies involving controlled clinical trials provide very strong evidence for its purported roles in warding off diseases and keeping up overall health.
The earliest mention of spirulina was in the Spanish accounts of city states in the New World of present-day Mexico where the Aztec and related ethnic groups collectively known as Mesoamericans consumed as a vegetable source the blue-green algae that they referred to as the stone's excrement. This food source was quite popular, being a common sight in the marketplace where it was sold as cakes. Today spirulina is collected from lakes and ponds in Chad and used in the same way. It is dried out in the sun and added as broth stocks to soups and stews.
The cultivation of spirulina has surged to a large-scale production since the latter half of the 20th century when two separate groups of European researchers conducted initial studies in Lake Texcoco in Mexico and Lake Chad in Africa, and learned the enormous potential of spirulina. Before long the United Nations World Food Conference in 1974 highlighted the many health benefits of spirulina, and thus catapulted it to the mainstream press, dubbing spirulina the best food for the future.
Why? Let's examine how Spirulina contributes to maintaining a healthy human body.
Complete Protein
The protein content of spirulina is surprisingly higher than those in red meat and vegetable sources like soy, amounting from 55 up to 77 percent. In fact, it holds dietary amounts of essential amino acids in proportions adequate for use by the human body, the reason why it is classified by nutritionist in the same category as most dairy products, poultry, and fish, all identified as a source of complete protein. Sufficient intake of sources of complete protein translates to being able to support physiological functions that require the presence of amino acids.
Essential Fatty Acids
Certain forms of omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids are present in spirulina, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) reputed for their roles against cardiovascular diseases. More importantly, it is one of the food sources that contain all essential fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and linolenic acid (LA). Both of which are necessitated for cellular functions but not produced inside the human body. It's labeled essential because we must get them from our diet.
Vitamins and Minerals
In addition, spirulina is a good source of a list of vitamins and minerals. It contains vitamins A, C, D, E, and B complex such as thiamine, riboflavin, nicotinamide, pyridoxine, folic acid, and cobalamin. No one will ever contest the health benefits of potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium, and zinc, all present in spirulina.
Make no mistake about it: spirulina is of utmost nutritional value and can easily be added to anybodies diet. Look for quality spirulina at your local or internet vitamin store.

Soy has been tied to women's health in recent years largely owing to the discovery of isoflavones that exhibit estrogen-like activities in the human body. While we get them from dietary sources, these chemical compounds function just like the female hormone estrogen manufactured by the human body in that they are readily absorbed by the human body and circulated in the bloodstream.
There are many other factors that give rise to menstrual complications, but a change in the availability of estrogen, either lower or higher than normal, has a significant impact on the entire menstrual cycle. Isoflavones in soy beans have been known to regulate the releases of estrogen in the female body. Also called phytoestrogens, they have very little difference in their chemical makeup from forms of estrogen produced by the body, allowing the former the ability to aid and act against estrogen.
Healthy Menstrual Cycle
What we refer to as regular menstrual period actually varies from one woman to another. If you keep a chart and track the number of days in between your periods, you will be able to determine what your body considers normal and regular. Whereas most women experience periods spanning from 3 to 5 days, medical professionals agree that a period that ends on the second day or continues until the eighth is completely normal. Keep in mind that anything outside this range merits medical attention.
The typical healthy woman starts menstruation with a moderate menstrual flow, and a sudden heavy discharge of blood may be an indicator of serious conditions such as the abnormal proliferation of cells in the uterine walls. The loss of blood in one period ranges from 10 to 80 milliliters, averaging out to 35 milliliters. You can safely assume you are having an irregular menstrual period if you are experiencing otherwise.
Irregular Menstrual Period
Over 30% of women of child-bearing age undergo abnormalities in their menstrual cycle. You might say your period is late or early. Or your period might follow an odd flow of blood loss. You don't need to panic. These are governed by a lot of factors, but it is best to pay a visit to the doctor and have your estrogen levels checked up. Chances are there is an imbalance of hormones in your system.
Estradiol, the form of estrogen predominant among women in their reproductive years, is the hormone that induces ovulation. Apart from genetic predisposition, diet plays an important role in the changing hormone levels of the female body. High caffeine intake and low availability of vitamins and minerals both contribute to the physical and emotional symptoms related to menstrual complications.
At a time when your body is exposed to too much stress, estradiol fails to fulfill certain tasks, including the rupturing and releasing of egg cells during ovulation. Phytoestrogens keep hormone levels in check by binding to estrogen receptors, resulting in the effective modulation of estrogen-related activities in the female body.
Soy isoflavones are available at your local or internet vitamin store in name brands like Source Naturals and Solaray. Always choose an isoflavone supplement in capsule or tablet form for easy consumption.

Article Title: What Are Lignans and How Can Lignans Boost Your Health?

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Lignans are chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants, of special note for their positive effects on health of the human body. They are biomolecular substances called polyphenols, and thus display antioxidant activities. Throughout the plant kingdom they are known for their protective measures against pathogenic stimuli such as ultraviolet rays. They are one of the organic compounds from plants that are believed to increase the length of life of human beings.
There are a number of readily available food source for lignans, but not all provide the dietary amounts sufficient for use by the human body. Precursors of lignans in use by the human body are abundant in whole grains, notably rye, wheat, oat, and barley. The two sources identified to have high concentrations of precursors of lignans are flax seed and sesame seed. Other known sources are berries, beans, broccoli, pumpkin seeds, and soybeans.
Phytochemicals
Every organic substance coming from plants that are believed to have an effect on the human body is classified as phytochemicals, for example beta carotene from carrots. There is still not much evidence on how essential all phytochemicals identified are to the human body, and the scientific community are as yet inconclusive as to whether to confer these substances status at par with vitamins and minerals. One thing is for sure: phytochemicals like lignans are beneficial at adequate levels.
Polyphenols
Many phytochemicals are polyphenols, lignans being one of them. The antioxidant properties of polyphenols have been the subject of numerous studies in the race to fight a cure for cancer in recent years. In addition, polyphenols display well documented activities against harmful pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoans, explaining popularity of their food sources, tea for instance.
Antioxidants
How do lignans act as antioxidants exactly?
The human body deploys substances such as free radicals to attack invasive pathogens. Being highly reactive to oxygen, free radicals are toxic to the body when not properly disposed of. With that, just when the pathogens are cleared out, agents that deactivate free radicals are released, thereby stopping them from damaging healthy structures at the cellular level.
There are factors that render the body unable to manage free radicals. Conditions that the body considers not normal, such as continued exposure to stress, may incapacitate some of its functions. Keep in mind that free radicals multiple at a very fast rate, and changes the chemical makeup of anything that's not a free radical, including DNA, practically destroying everything around them.
This is when lignans and other known polyphenols come to our defense. The agents that are supposed to take care of free radicals in the human body are not always effective, giving rise to more serious diseases such as the abnormal proliferation of cells that may become malignant. With the unending fatigue the human body is subjected to, it is prudent to consider supplementation of proven antioxidants such as lignans today.
Lignans are available in capsule and liquid forms at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Source Naturals and Barleans to ensure you purchase a high quality lignan supplement.

Varicose veins on the legs can be a real torment apart from the fact they are unattractive. No one would ever think of these veins as having any aesthetic value. What you should know is that you can do something about it. There are ways to correct them that are recommended by the scientific community. For one, horse chestnut has been proven safe and effective in eradicating ugly leg veins.
Aesculus hippocastanum is a very large tree species indigenous to the Balkan Peninsula that has long been introduced to all temperate regions of the world. Horse chestnut is its common name in the vernacular but it is known as Conker tree in some areas, especially in the UK and Ireland. It is a part of the deciduous vegetation in the mountains across Europe, and grows to 118 feet on average.
Historical Use
Horse chestnut has had functional uses throughout the ages. Its medicinal use adopted by early Greek physicians was noted in De Materia Medica, a pharmacopeia authored by Dioscorides. The seeds contain a white sap used in France and Switzerland to clean or bleach linen, silk, and wool without damaging them. In Britain horse chestnuts were of special value during the Second World War when it was used both as a vegetable source of starch and as a smokeless propellant in military armaments.
The Saponin Aescin
The discovery of chemical compounds called saponin in horse chestnut paved the way for its modern day use in treatment of ugly leg veins and related venous disorders. Saponins are a group of naturally occurring substances that are primarily abundant in botanical sources, in which they protect the plant against pathogenic bacteria, protozoans, and fungi. When ingested by animals, including human beings, they are believed to aid in the absorption of nutrients and overall digestion of foods. One saponin compound unique to horse chestnut trees is aescin, now widely accepted as the active ingredient against disorders of the veins.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Ugly leg veins are one symptom of a medical condition identified as chronic venous insufficiency, which is the most commonly known syndrome of the veins. Other symptoms of this syndrome include itchiness, leg pain, leg swelling, and even skin ulcers. The veins are blood vessels that bring back the blood with depleted oxygen sources from the organs to the heart for a refill, and by way of the arteries the same blood are transported back to the body parts.
Veins are different from arteries in that the structure of the former contains valves that keep the blood from retrograding, in other words they have to pump the blood forward otherwise the direction of the bloodstream reverses. However, the valves can be impaired due to a number of reasons, and the blood that the vein contains pressure the venous walls, resulting in the ugly leg veins that you see. There is very strong scientific evidence that aescin in horse chestnut reverses this dysfunction and promotes the overall health of the veins.
Look for horse chestnut at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Now Foods and Solaray for quality and purity of the horse chestnut supplement you purchase.

Ginkgo Biloba is believed to enhance memory in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its introduction to Europe and America has been spurred by studies that point to its positive effect on the blood flow to the brain, making it relevant to the treatment of a group of disorders related to blood vessels supplying the brain. With that, there is strong belief among advocates of alternative medicine that it helps in a number of mental illnesses related to aging such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
Ginkgo Biloba is actually a tree of towering proportions with known cultivars growing up to 165 feet in height. This plant has no known close relatives still in existence, but is thought to have been a common species across the globe long before written history began. It is indeed one of the oldest living species to date to withstand changes throughout the millennia. In fact, several specimen trees in Chinese temples have been claimed to have been around for over a thousand years.
It has been cultivated in the East since time immemorial and has been a prized member of the local vegetation in North Asia largely owing to its status in Buddhism. In China where it is conferred with an historical symbol as the national tree, ginkgo nuts has long been a traditional ingredient in numerous dishes, notably in rice porridge served to those who have fever. The seeds are particularly esteemed for their health benefits, and sold as supplements to promote mental alertness and remedy dizziness.
Extracts from ginkgo biloba are rich in flavonoids, which have been tied to ongoing studies concerning their assumed role against cancer. One thing is for sure: flavonoids show strong antioxidant properties, making ginkgo biloba at par with tea in the war against free radicals, which are by-products of chemical reactions in the human body that involve the use of oxygen. The principal task of free radicals is to ward off diseases due to infection by killing pathogenic substances.
Free radicals are highly destructive entities, being a reactive oxygen species that changes everything around them into free radicals. Cells are equipped with substances ready to detoxify free radicals right after the latter complete their role in eradicating harmful stimuli. Despite of that, there are times that the body fails to dispose of free radicals multiplying at a rapid rate, causing damage to cells. The fact that free radicals modify DNA is believed to contribute to the formation of carcinogenic agents in the body and even accelerate the aging process. This is the reason why antioxidants have been of special significance in recent years.
In addition, ginkgo biloba have exhibited notropic properties, which explains its effects on enhancing concentrations. The Chinese has long used its nuts and extracts in an effort to improve cognition and intelligence. Researches involving randomized clinical trials are well underway, but initial studies have reported that consumptions of ginkgo biloba extracts modulate the supply of blood to the brain, translating to overall mental health.
You can find ginkgo biloba at your local or internet vitamin store in standardized capsule or tablet forms. Always choose name brands like Source Naturals to ensure quality and purity of the herb you seek.

Zingiber officinale is an herb reputed to relieve joint pain for centuries. Recent studies have unraveled the age-old medicinal wonder of this plant, and clinical trials have backed up this claim. Its rhizome called ginger root in the vernacular is a tuber that contains oils now identified for their analgesic properties. It is well documented that regions with populations known for regular intake of ginger have lower prevalence of joint pain and, not surprisingly, better overall health.
How does ginger root alleviate pain exactly?
Let's take a look at what causes discomfort related to joints that we refer to as arthritis in general. Keep in mind that not all joint pains are caused by arthritis. Some may result from other conditions such as rheumatic fever or more serious diseases such as cancer metastases to the bone. Arthritis, on the other hand, is the medical disorder focused on the joints and connective tissues that surround them.
Damage to the joints of the human body do not get healed at the same rate other body parts are. Why? The tissues that makeup the joints do not have direct access to blood vessels, which carry the restorative substances of our body. They do regenerate only at a much slower pace, and thus do not catch up with the continued damage to these tissues, consequently leading to arthritis in later life. Physical trauma impacts on these tissues on the same principle, explaining why ample amount of rest is necessitated following the events that caused the injury.
The pain that characterizes all forms of arthritis is inflammatory. It has to do with how our body tries to counter illnesses. Take for example, when one body part is infected, our immune system act on destroying the harmful stimuli that triggered the infection. How? Every cell in the human body is equipped with messenger molecules that communicate at all times, giving off distress signals when invasive substances are detected and starting the process called inflammation. This is when these molecules sensitize the concerned body part to pain.
The immune system manages damaged tissues in the joints in the same way. Chemical compounds that are supposed to heal the joints fill up the spaces that were once covered by healthy tissues. At the same time, the increased surface area of the damaged joints spurs the formation of bony materials within the spaces, resulting in the limited joint movement or stiffness most individuals complain about. These two processes govern the pain tied to all forms of arthritis.
It should be noted that there is no cure for most forms of arthritis but the quality of life can be improved significantly. The mainstay of treatment is regular exercise to achieve a healthy body mass index and the use of analgesics. Ginger root has naturally occurring analgesics that alleviate the inflammation pain associated with arthritis. Gingerol, the form present in raw ginger root, and zingerone, the form in cooked ones, both counter the inflammatory agents that cause joint pain.
Ginger is a spice and may not be for everybody, this is why this wonderful herb is available in capsule form for easy consumption. Look for quality ginger capsules at your local or internet vitamin store.

Garlic is an herb of universal significance. It has been a prized ingredient in cuisines of virtually every single culture around the world, and highly regarded as an age-old herbal remedy. As a matter of fact, scholars and scientists alike are having problem tracing its origins as its cultivars have been well domesticated around the world since time immemorial. In recent years, studies have looked into a number of its purported health benefits, including its potential value against cancer.
Earliest records show that garlic has been cultivated for culinary and medicinal uses since the ancient times. It is one of the few plants that are recorded in both the Bible and the Talmud. All the prominent physicians in Classical Antiquity like Hippocrates, Dioscorides, Galen, and Pliny the Older have made detailed mentions of its use in treatment of diseases of the four humors, an early explanation of the human body adapted by Greco-Roman naturalists. Today garlic is reputed as a good source of micronutrients, including an assortment of vitamins and minerals.
Protecting Cellular Health
Raw garlic is rich in phytochemicals that display antioxidant properties, such as Vitamin C, known to aid the body against oxidative stress. Free radicals are released throughout the body to combat pathogenic microbes and other invasive stimuli, but themselves become a threat in large numbers, triggering the process called oxidative stress that damages healthy cells. Even consumptions of cooked garlic have shown activities that contribute to curbing excessive releases of free radicals, reining in their effects at the molecular level.
Regulating Blood Sugar
The use of garlic to reduce high blood glucose levels has long been publicized. Garlic contains naturally occurring chemical compounds that are necessitated during the conversion of glycogen into glucose and its consequent release into the bloodstream. Glucose is transported from the liver or intestines to cells of all body parts as it is the primary energy source of the human body, and ultimately absorbed by the cells with the aid of the hormone insulin. Diet may increase the risk of acquiring conditions related to unhealthy sugar levels in the body such as diabetes mellitus. Fortunately, intake of garlic products counters the underlying factors of diabetes.
Lowering Bad Cholesterol
It has been widely observed that those regions with populations known for regular intake of garlic in any forms have low incidence of diseases related to high levels of cholesterol. The scientific community remains inconclusive as to how garlic exactly help the human body lower cholesterol, but studies that involved patients diagnosed with high blood cholesterol have reported that garlic acts as an inhibitory factor in the aggregation of bad cholesterol in the bloodstream and the formation of plaques in the arterial walls.
In addition, garlic has been known for its antiseptic properties, relieving illnesses brought about by bacteria, viruses, and protozoans such as the contraction of the common cold and sore throat. Having no known side effects, garlic has an unending list of health benefits just waiting for scientific confirmation.
Good quality garlic found at your health food store will mention allicin on its label. Allicin is the active ingredient and is what causes that garlic odor that normally accompanies this wonderful herb. Look for it in odorless form for easy of use.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
In modern day society there's a lot of health risks you are exposed to every day; fast food, alcohol, cigarettes and pollution, to name but a few. Even if you are healthy, exercise regularly and eat healthy there is one thing missing: fiber in your diet. Any doctor worth his salt will tell you that no matter how hard you try, the products available to us just aren't rich enough in fiber. Not having enough fiber to digest can cause your body a lot of harm, especially your digestive system. Luckily there's a way around this hurdle: digestive enzyme supplements. By helping out your body with the right essential enzyme supplements you can maximize your chances of a long, healthy life.
Digestive enzyme supplements are possibly the most commonly available wellness supplement. And these enzyme supplements are very important because your body just can't produce enough enzymes in today's world to digest all the cooked foods we readily consume. When food is cooked, the live enzymes it holds is killed. Raw foods have between 40% and 60% live enzymes, which when it's eaten begins to predigest the food so your body is only responsible for the 40% to 60% of what's left.
When you eat a majority of cooked foods, you expect your body to produce enough enzymes to digest and process all of the food and nutrients. The fact is it cannot. The pancreas is in charge of producing these enzymes and if you constantly demand of it too much, it will eventually decide to just give up or produce less then the needed amounts to properly digest foods.
We are born with a certain amount of enzyme potential. When you ask of your body to produce more than the natural amount of enzymes you deplete this potential faster. This causes abdominal pain, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and many other digestive diseases when you are older, this can shrink your life-span as well. Not only has your diet depleted your enzyme levels, but frequent air travel and stress are also culprits. Shortly put: This is a problem that is not going to go away and digestive enzyme supplements are the way to deal with it.
Digestive enzymes are the proteins your body uses to break down the food you eat into nutrients and basically chucking the rests away. Without enough digestive enzymes, you can never get all the nutrients you need out of food. Let's call this the vicious circle of life.
Enzyme supplements can be most commonly found in tablet form and are usually made from plant materials. Enzymes in meat are too complex, so enzymes coming from plants are the way to go. Drinking the supplement with every meal or on an empty stomach is a great way of filling up your body's enzyme resources.
When you take it on an empty stomach you fill up your storage space and when you eventually eat something, these little busters helps your body by breaking the vicious circle. So it is a wise decision to get yourself some digestive enzyme supplements, especially if you eat your food cooked and can't bear the thought of substituting your potato chips with a few carrot sticks.
A good or essential enzyme supplement contains Pancreatin, Protease, Lipase, Amylase, Cellulase, and Lactase. Look for quality essential enzymes supplements at your local or internet vitamin store in name brands like Source Naturals.

One of the things we make sure we get from our diet is Vitamin A because we know that it has to do with keeping our eyes healthy. Not only does this vitamin remove the threat of developing vision problems, but it also plays a direct role in creating the images you see. Without this one thing the human eye is not capable of processing light into concrete and tangible pictures. In addition, getting the right amounts of this vitamin translates to fine-tuning the clearness of human vision.
Sources
There are many precursors of vitamin A. Carotenoids, such as beta carotene, are pro-vitamin A that are abundant in plant sources, for example carrots and sweet potatoes. Retinol, the form we get from most animal sources, is the same form of the vitamin present in our body, and thus called pre-formed vitamin A. When the human body digests and absorbs any of these precursors, the liver converts them into many other forms for use by specific body parts. These forms are products of metabolism with some differences in their molecular structures but all collectively known as vitamin A. One form called retinal is delivered to the eyes where it is incorporated into the proteins that make up the retina.
Human Vision
Whenever we open our eyes the particles of light around us are interpreted by our brain. The cornea, the transparent outermost layer of the human eye, manages the direction and speed of the light coming in together with the lens. The pupil is the opening to the inner part of the eye, and the iris controls the amount of light that enters by changing the size and diameter of the pupil. When the light hits the retina, it is processed by cells capable of absorbing or reflecting each light particle. The images that we see are products of processed light particles.
Retinal
A process called phototransduction takes place in the nerve cells inside the retina. In well-lit environments with high light levels typical in the morning, neurons called rod cells change light particles into electrical signals delivered to the brain to produce visual representation. At night cone cells take charge of this process since they are more sensitive to light particles. Both neurons consist of proteins that manage the concentrations of retinal, the vitamin A in the retina. By doing so, each particle is either absorbed or reflected to create color at daytime or manage intensity in low-light environments.
Retinoic Acid
Cells called epithelium that protects the eye from the outside environment make up the exposed part of the cornea. Epithelial tissues in the human eye need maintenance to avoid dryness that may give rise to rough dead cells, a major cause of many eye problems including the inability of the eye to produce tears. One form of Vitamin A called retinoic acid nourishes these tissues and its absence results in damages to the epithelium.
Little do we know that Vitamin A plays such a major part in the human body.

Flax seed oil is an edible oil extracted from the herb flax. The plant may be more commonly known as linseed in some regions, but both names in the vernacular refer to the annual identified as Linum usitatissimum. In addition to its functional uses, the food-grade oil is of important nutritional value, containing phytochemicals like lignans and essential fatty acids.
The plant has stems that grow up to 4 feet and stands erect. Its leaves are long, ranging from 10 to 20 millimeters, and wide in the middle. The flowers have five petals that are violet in color but to the lighter hues, even looking white at a distance. Varieties that have bright red flowers are not uncommon. The fruit is a composed of two or more ovule-bearing structures called carpels that split open at maturity, exposing a number of glossy seeds that may be golden yellow or brown.
Flax is one of the crops well documented as far back as the earliest civilizations in the Fertile Crescent, but its domestication has been alleged to have started much earlier as evidenced by flax products dated to the prehistoric times. In Northern Europe there is strong evidence that the use of its fiber as clothing dates back to the New Stone Age. In addition to its age-old heritage as a fiber crop, flax is now cultivated for human nutrition around the world.
Against Carcinogenic Agents
Cancer has been closely tied to the unmitigated proliferation of free radicals. When the body experiences an imbalance between the number of free radicals and the agents that detoxify these highly reactive substances, the body suffers from oxidative stress, which is believed to be responsible for the formation of carcinogens. Flax seed oil contains an abundance of polyphenolic substances called lignans, one of the most commonly known antioxidants naturally occurring in plants, and its strong antioxidant properties are purported to prevent the progression of abnormal cells in the body.
Against Inflammatory Conditions
Inflammation begins when signaling molecules trigger all substances implicated in fighting off pathogens to cram into the area of infection. It is now widely accepted that fatty acids act against inflammatory agents in the body, and thus of special note in the treatment of arthritis, lupus, asthma, and complications due to infection. There are only two essential fatty acids: linoleic acid (LA) and alpha linolenic acid (ALA), and both of which are present in flax seed oil. Not surprisingly, flax seed oil has the highest concentrations of omega 3 fatty acids of all vegetable oils.
Against Cardiovascular Diseases
Having high levels of omega 3 fatty acids, flax seed oil is widely touted for its role in lowering cholesterol. In fact, it has often been reported to help individuals with very unhealthy levels of bad cholesterol. Cohorts of patients diagnosed with poor coronary artery health have benefited from regular intake of omega 3 fatty acids, and flax seed oil has been involved in many well-controlled clinical trials.
Flax seed oil is available in liquid and softgel forms at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Barleans and Now Foods to ensure quality and purity of the product you purchase for consumption.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
Echinacea has long been used by American Indians in treatment of cough and colds, and in recent years has been adopted by the larger populace in the same way. Of special note of late is its efficacy reported by advocates of eclectic medicine, and the scientific community has started looking into its medicinal potential as well. Preliminary results point to a variety of active ingredients that work hand in hand with the immune system in fighting off infections.
In addition to Echinacea purpurea, there are a number of species that we collectively refer to as Echinacea, and all of them belong to the daisy family. They closely resemble the archetypal daisy, and are cultivated in homes for their showy flower heads, which are purplish in color. The plant is also known as purple cornflower in the vernacular, referring to the purple florets that are arranged in a pronounced cone-like structure with the outer rays pointing down and the cone-shaped head at the center.
Historical Use
Among the Indians of the Great Plains of North America, the plant was called Elk root. The Indians, who believed all things possessed spirits, observed that elks knowingly consume the plant when wounded or feeling ill. The shamans of the tribes, being among the powerful men in Indian communities and also revered as medicine men, identified elk root as a painkiller for wounds and swelling and a potent remedy against cough, sore throats, and other symptoms caused by colds.
In the 19th century when the plant was introduced to Europe, purple cornflowers were extensively applied to punctures caused by animal bites and other skin lesions. It quickly rose to popularity as being a powerful analgesic owing largely to word of mouth in support of its touted effectiveness, giving rise to the present day belief that it wards off the common cold among other ailments. Today Echinacea is widely cultivated for its general medicinal properties as well as its ornamental flowers.
Mechanism of Action
The active constituents in Echinacea vary from one part to another, but the entire plant is utilized in producing extracts. While any part of the plant has been used as a remedy, most neutraceutical companies nowadays utilize the roots in large scale productions. Studies show that root extracts have an abundance of active ingredients and bring out more desirable effects in the human body. Due to a number of chemical compounds present in the plant, the scientific community remains inconclusive as to how Echinacea works.
However, a number of studies have pointed out some of its mechanisms in the human body. Phenol compounds identified in the plant are believed to stimulate the immune system in during times of distress, modulating its ability to fight off diseases. Gamma Linolenic Acid, commonly abbreviated as GLA, is an important ingredient in vegetable oils. Discovered to be one of the polyunsaturated fatty acids, it is involved in underway studies concerning the treatment of cancer. Of special note is its unique anti-carcinogenic activity that puts to end to the development of abnormal cells known as neoplasms and the spread of these cells to other parts of the human body.
GLA is among the first essential fatty acids to be discovered largely owing to the widespread popularity of the medicinal uses of the herb evening primrose. This plant was indigenous to the American continent and grown by Native Americans to ease bruises and treat open wounds. Perhaps the most known account of its herbal value was way back in the 17th century when the plant was brought to the European continent and utilized to treat all sorts of diseases, including asthma, digestive disorders, and swelling due to infections. The discovery of gamma linolenic acid in the oils extracted from the herb explained its much reputed healing powers.
Unsaturated Fat
In recent years we have been told that saturated fats present in most canned goods and other preserved foods contribute to the levels of bad cholesterol in the bloodstream. Saturated fats actually extend the shelf life of processed foods, the reason why manufacturers choose to utilize saturated fats. However, the consequence starts to really show inside the human body when they are incorporated to the walls and membranes of cells.
Truth is unsaturated fat is indeed more susceptible to rancidity, but at the same time have a lower melting point. With that, unsaturated fat is the healthy choice inasmuch as it maintains the right levels of fluidity of cell membranes, which is what a warm-blooded animals like human beings need to support the fast and complex chemical reactions in their bodies. For one, the unsaturated fat gamma linolenic acid plays an active role in the upkeep of the dermis and the maintenance of the kidneys.
Eicosanoid Precursor
The anti-inflammatory properties displayed by the medicinal use of the herb evening primrose are attributed to gamma linolenic acid being one of the omega 6 fatty acids, which are precursors to groups of signaling molecules in the human body's immune system. These molecules are collectively called eicosanoids that act as messengers in times of distress, and used by the body to combat pathogenic microbes. GLA promotes the releases of eicosanoids at the area of infection.
Regular consumptions of gamma linolenic acid result in the tune-up of eicosanoids-controlled functions, ultimately leading to faster relief from the swelling, pain, and redness that characterize inflammation and autoimmune diseases such as asthma, hay fever, and other allergies. GLA has long been recommended by advocates of alternative medicine largely owing to its positive effects it brings about almost right away after application minus the side effects associated with other anti-inflammatory drugs.
GLA is available in evening primrose oil or borage oil. Look for quality primrose or borage oil at you local or internet vitamin store.

The thin consistency of the blood also allows a good circulation to the very tiny blood vessels of the brain. Thus, nourishment of brain cells is consistent. In relation to its blood thinning ability, gingko biloba is also a proven and has been long used as an anti coagulant. Therefore, this herbal medicine must be used cautiously by individuals with clotting problems and hemorrhagic stroke.
Secondly, another use of gingko biloba as a circulation enhancer is relieving leg pain felt during walking. This is due to a poor blood circulation causing claudication of the legs. An improved blood circulation can also alleviate the painful sensation felt among patients suffering from Raynaud's disease.
Another reason that Ginkgo Biloba is being considered as a promising memory and nervous system function aid is that this herb has been found to contain antioxidants specifically flavonoids and terpenoids. These chemical compounds can help prevent destruction to body cells caused by free radicals. In fact, scientific studies show that the brain cells or neurons are the cells which are mostly vulnerable to free radical damage as an individual grows older. That is why, more individuals from the middle and old age group experience memory loss.
These antioxidants do not only prevent cell damage but are also believed to have the capacity to facilitate DNA formation and improve the integrity of cell membranes. Antioxidants are important to the body because free radicals can significantly damage and impede normal formation of cells. Free radicals are inevitable since they are natural end products of the many biological processes that the body undergoes.

The liver has so many functions to maintain the normal functioning of the human body. It is the organ responsible for metabolizing the unnecessary compounds inside the body such as toxins and biologic reaction end products. As a compensatory mechanism of the liver's laborious duty, the body also takes part in producing liver protectant compounds. One major chemical compound that naturally protects the liver is Glutathione. This liver chemical is a very simple molecule which is produced naturally in the body.
Glutathione is a tripeptide which is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein also known as amino acids. These amino acids are cysteine, glycine and glutamine. Among its precursors, Cysteine is the most effective binder of the various harmful chemicals inside the body. A deficiency in any of these amino acids can cause easy damage to the liver and frequent sickness.
The secret of Glutathione's liver protectant property is also thought to be because of the sulfur chemical group it possesses. The element sulfur enables the Glutathione molecule to easily attract body toxins including free radicals and other heavy metals such as mercury and lead, thus facilitating excretion. In a normal or healthy person, Glutathione is typically reused inside the body. However, if the toxicity inside the body is high, glutathione is easily depleted and readily eliminated.
Glutathione, also referred to as the body's master antioxidant, is an important substance for the body. Primarily, glutathione is commonly used to enhance liver function by maintaining the health of the liver cells. We know for a fact that almost every chemical inside the body is metabolized by the liver. As a result, glutathione is the chemical compound responsible for protecting the liver cells from toxins such as excessive alcohol levels, medication overdose and other harmful substances produced by the body after any biologic reaction.
Furthermore, it can also prevent the buildup of metabolized fats and facilitate the conversion of carbohydrates into usable energy. In line with its many roles, glutathione is also the most abundant antioxidant in the body. In addition, glutathione is an antioxidant that must be present at high concentration especially in the liver since the human system issubjected to various environmental and metabolic hazards on daily basis.
As mentioned above, glutathione is naturally produced by the body and it is found mostly in the liver to fight against harmful compounds. However, aside from the liver, glutathione is also found in the gastrointestinal tracts to detoxify harmful microorganisms. It also has the capacity to improve the immune system by supplying the enzyme called Glutathione Peroxidase which is required in the formation of new red and white blood cells. It also aids the body in producing killer cells which prevents specific diseases. The depletion of glutathione in the body may result in severe immune system damage as well as chronic degenerative disorders including environmental illnesses. Nowadays, glutathione is also widely utilized because of its side effects. One of the side effects of glutathione is it ability to lighten skin complexion. It can also give a healthier and whiter glow to the skin making it an important ingredient in many cosmetic items.
Though glutathione is available in capsules and injectables, fruits and vegetables are the great natural sources of this beneficial chemical compound. If you will be opting for capsule or injectable supplementation, to be completely safe, seek medical advice from a qualified practitioner first.
Look for glutathione at a vitamin store. Always choose name brands to ensure quality and purity of the product you purchase for internal consumption.
