Many individuals are constantly asking whether wrinkles could be alleviated even if they are already formed. The answer would probably be a resounding yes! Due to the advancements in the skin care industry, several products and procedures have been formulated to address skin irregularities.

Wrinkles are normal when a person ages because the skin losses collagen and elastin, two proteins that is responsible in keeping the integrity of the skin. To be more specific, collagen helps maintain the texture of your delicate skin by keeping structural fibers strong and intact, elastin, on the other hand, aides in maintaining the elasticity of the skin. The best thing we could do if problems of aging would arise is to find products that could help you replace the above mentioned proteins so as to improve your skin's condition.

At present, there are so many collagen modalities that you could avail in different skin care clinics. Botox is one procedure that has gained the spotlight for it works really well in alleviating wrinkles out from your face. The procedure involves the injection of collagen fillers to make your skin look smooth once again. However, the procedure is a bit painful and not to mention, very costly. What's worst is that it is not permanent and will only last for a certain span of time.

Aside from invasive procedures like the botox, several collagen-based products are also sold in cosmetic stores that are claiming to be effective in making your skin smooth and wrinkle-free. I'm pretty certain that once in your life, you have tried using these products but much to your dismay, you did not witness any significant improvement on your skin. This only shows that collagen is never effective when applied superficially. The reason behind it not being absorbed is the fact that its molecular structure is so huge that it could not pass and penetrate into the skin.

Because of the great improvement in the field of cosmetic science, various modalities have been devised that has brought hope for many individuals who desire to improve their skin's condition without surgery involved. There are collagen creams that contain a substance that was formulated in New Zealand known as Cynergy TK. It has been proven effective in replacing lost collagens in your skin; it functions by triggering your body to produce more collagen as well as elastin. Cynergy TK aids in enhancing the collagen level in your system hence, making your wrinkles less evident, and your skin will turn out to be firmer as ever. Cynergy TK also contains significant levels of keratin, which helps facilitate absorption hence skin repair could be made possible.

However, wrinkles are part of our lives and it symbolizes all the experiences a person has gained all throughout the years that he lived therefore, despite of its presence, we must remain firm and positive with regard to these natural changes in our body because superficial beauty matters less when compared to the inner splendor which will surely radiate from within.

You can find collagen creams or tablets at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brand to ensure quality of what you buy to improve your skins health.

Generally, cats have a thick fur that is why they easily feel warm most of the time. When they are resting, it is a very relaxing feeling for them to lick their bodies to be able to provide mild coolness. In addition, nibbling their fur body is also a way of grooming their bodies. Subsequently, this cat activity may facilitate hair fall. Therefore, it is not shocking that cats are very prone to formation of hair ball inside their stomachs. A hair ball is a clump of hair in the stomach of animals. Hair balls are formed when animals lick their bodies and ingest their body hairs. When hair balls develop into a very big clump due to accumulation of hair over time, animals occasionally throw this bunch of hair up. Rabbits and cattles also have a high tendency of forming hair balls since they clean up their bodies by licking their fur just as cats do.

A Hairball Formula is a product that aids in the digestion of hair preventing it from forming into clumps or ball of hair. These kind of products have a formulation consisting of Cellulose, Catnip and other proteolytic or protein – lysing substances. The ingredients of a Hairball Formula include:

    1. Cellulose is an important component of this anti – hairball formula. Cellulose is an organic compound that cannot be readily digested by human gut but serves to increase the bulk of the feces. Cellulose is a hydrophilic agent adding more roughage to the stool thus improving bowel movement.

    2. Another enzyme is Papain from an unripe papaya fruit. Papain is an effective proteolytic enzyme that can help digest protein molecules like hairs.

    3. Catnip is an herb which primarily has a relaxant property. It can also help prevent digestive problems such as gastric upset, tension and indigestion.

    4. Aloe Vera has a soothing effect to the gastrointestinal tract. Aloe Vera extract in the stomach stimulates the production of pepsin. Pepsin is an important digestive enzyme to break down proteins.

    5. Slippery elm is a tree in which its bark is used a soothing agent for the digestive tract. It is discovered to provide relief and coat digestive tract walls. With its reflux stimulation property, it facilitates stimulation of mucus production thus protecting the digestive tract against ulcers and other indigestible products ingested.

    6. Fructooligosaccharides is a common synthetic food flavoring which is popularly employed to improve digestive health because of its prebiotic effects. Fructooligosaccharide serves as a precursor of digestive microbial flora. It is claimed that this chemical compound can prevent yeast infections.

    7. Psyllium seed contains chemical that can preserve more water in the feces making it easier to pass stool. Like cellulose, psyllium cannot be broken down and absorbed by the intestinal wall. It only acts as dietary roughage. Adequate bulk and moisture in the feces can significantly prevent constipation.

Most Hairball Formulas come in tablet preparations. It can be crushed and mixed with the food for your cat. For small – sized cats (about 15 lbs or less), use two tablets in the morning and evening meal. For cats weighing more than 15 lbs, mix the cat food with 3 tablets twice a day.

Look for quality hairball formulas at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Actipet to ensure quality of what you buy for your beloved pet.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH has become a very common problem especially for aging males. The condition is known to be a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland which is characterized by frequent urination and dribbling sensation after passage of urine. Because of the desire to address such uncomfortable health state, many studies have been conducted to find remedies geared to combat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. The berry of the saw palmetto plant is one of the remedies that have proven its worth and capacity in helping the enlarged prostate shrinks back to its normal size.

However, the discovery of saw palmetto as a remedy is never new after all because long time ago it is already utilized by American Indians as an aphrodisiac. Way back in the late 19th century in Europe, saw palmetto has been used as a cure for individuals who are suffering from discomforts brought about by abnormalities in their prostate. In fact, any European through the German Commission E. (a regulating body that evaluates herbal remedies for their capacity to heal and safety) acknowledges and regard saw palmetto as a drug for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Saw palmetto contains the active component known as phytosterols, these are substances that are naturally found in plants that are capable of thwarting abnormal prostate cell growth. The effect that it renders the body is comparable to the prescription drug finasteride. Another effect of this berry extract is to increase the body's testosterone levels. Studies that were conducted in Europe about saw palmetto would really affirm that its extract could really combat both urinary and prostate infections.

Despite the fact that there are product reviews that claims that the drug finasteride is a bit more effective than saw palmetto extracts, it could not be denied as well that the drug involves a greater risk of having erectile dysfunction. While on the other hand, saw palmetto has fewer side effects reported and could enhance passage of urine and decreases the like hood of urination at night which is very bothersome for you to achieve a sound and comfortable sleep.

More than taking any supplements, it is very important to seek medical advice as soon as symptoms of BPH are noted because early detection will definitely play a vital role in the success of any treatment regimen. When consulting your medical doctor, it is also important to discuss with him your plans of taking any supplements to prevent the possibility of incompatibilities because whether we like it or not, there are some medications that would really react with some supplements. In addition, there are also some things that you have to take note when using saw palmetto supplement and this is to watch out for any signs of allergic reactions and some undesirable side effects. Ones these are seen and felt, stop taking the supplement right there and then.

Look for saw palmetto and other prostate supplements at your local or internet vitamin store. always choose name brands to ensure quality of what you buy for better health.

Dogs do experience anxiety also. This may be manifested by excessive barking or growling and restlessness even though the stimulus is already not around. However, responses to anxiety stimuli vary from one dog to another. Anxiety may also be caused by stress towards the dog. Therefore, if the dog is experiencing anxiety, it is important that the owner must carefully assess the cause of stress and patiently relieve the stress by constant training. Correct behavioral therapy or proper desensitization to the dog's unpleasant stimuli is one of the most effective ways to relieve stress among dogs.

Like humans, there are also many herbs that are safe and effective in managing anxiety attacks among dogs. Some of these are:

    1. St. John's wort is an herb commonly taken by people to help control anxiety and depression. It is believed to improve the mental health your pet. Its anxiolytic or anti – anxiety property is also effective among cats as well. This herbal supplement is often prescribed for treatment of mild anxiety caused by loud noises such as thunder, presence of strangers or many people and other simple phobias.

    2. Valerian is a European perennial herb which is widely utilized as a natural remedy for anxiety experienced by dogs. Studies show that this herb is composed of certain chemicals that can stimulate the production of gamma amino butyric acid (GABA). GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter.

    3. Skullcap is also popularly employed to relieve anxieties among dogs because it has an effective sedative, antispasmodic and anticonvulsant property. Studies using this herb have revealed high effectivity in controlling nervousness and aggressiveness among dogs and cats most especially after an exposure to an unpleasant incident. Skullcap is an anxiolytic herb which does not have a side effect such as sleepiness and motor or reflex incoordination. Taking this herb together with valerian herb is best for epileptic mammals.

    4. Passion flower also contains a nerve – calming chemicals which make it an effective treatment for dog aggressiveness and nervousness. It has many other names which include maypop and apricot vine. The active chemicals in this plant are flavonoids, cyanogenic glycosides and alkaloids. These are helpful in treating dogs with epilepsy and anxiety. Though this herb does not have a sedative effect like the other anxiolytic herb for dogs, it has a promising calming effect. This is the reason why it is usually prescribed as an effective relaxing agent for overexcited or frightened dogs.

    5. Chamomile, on the other hand, has both calming and sedative effects. This herb is usually used among dogs that will be traveling or for a stroll.

    6. Hops is a flowering vine which has a relaxing property. It is beneficial in treating insomnia and other sleep disorders. This herb is often taken in combination with the other anxiolytic plants.

These natural herbal plants are guaranteed to be safe and effective. However, like any other drug and supplements, over dosage of these medicinal plants may be damage the liver. To be completely safe, it would be best to avoid using these herbs on pregnant animals.

Animals also experience arthritis. Like humans, the joints and its synovial fluid also follows the theory of wear and tear. As animals age, their joints become weak and lesser fluid is being produced as lubricant. They may experience joint pain which can make your pets immobile, irritable and stressed. Unfortunately, since dogs are carnivorous, they usually feed on meat in which uric acid is high. Uric acid is one of the precipitating factors arthritis and other joint discomforts.

MSM or Methylsulfonylmethane is a food supplement which can significantly relieve joint pains. One of MSM's precursors is sulfur. Sulfur has an anti – inflammatory property thus preventing joint pains. Sulfur is also an important component of joint cartilages. It makes the cartilages that make up the joints stronger. MSM is also necessary to the body because it is the compound which supplies sulfur to the body. This chemical compound is composed of about 34% sulfur. MSM is more effective if taken together with other anti – arthritic agents such as glucosamine. MSM can be found naturally in trace amounts on many foods. Studies reveal that MSM absorption in the stomach is that it is attached to proteins and absorbed into the connective tissues of the joints.

Additional sulfur supply of sulfur is important in the body because it is required ion the synthesis of collagen for a healthy connective tissue and improves cellular regeneration. As a result, this will promote joint strength and flexibility. MSM also has an antioxidant property in which it is capable of attaching to free radicals thus facilitating elimination out of the body.

Among dogs, MSM can be given orally, topically or by injection (Veterinarian only). Oral preparations come in liquid or pill form. Topically, gel preparation of MSM is applied on joint area. More importantly, injection must be done by a trained medical professional.

Another food supplement which can improve a healthier joint is Glucosamine. It is very effective in maintaining the health of dog joints. A healthy joint ensures proper mobility. Glucosamine is a precursor of your pet's glycosaminoglycans which is a main component of connective tissues throughout the body. In addition, glucosamine can also provide a relaxing effect to dog joints.

Types of glucosamine include a combination with sulfate, hydrochloric acid and two molecules of potassium chloride. Glucosamine comes in the form of liquid or pills. Injectables glucosamine is also available just like MSM. Chemically, if MSM is primarily sulfur – based, Glucosamine is an amino acid derivative of glucose. This chemical is isolated from the hydrolysis of chitin. Chitin is a complex carbohydrate from the shells of crustaceans such as crabs, shrimps, lobsters and the like. Glucosamine supplement is very cost effective and reliable since it can be extracted from shells which are often thrown away.

Generally, Glucosamine and MSM supplements are good for the joint health of your dog. Most pet owners supplement their dog foods most especially when their dogs are experiencing decreased mobility. The effect of these supplements can be seen within a short period of time.

Joint supplements for dogs are available at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Actipet to ensure quality of what you buy for your dogs health.

Article Title: Can Activated Charcoal Help With Food Poisoning?

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Activated charcoal is used in many hospitals not only to treat food poisoning but also to remove toxic levels of ingested drugs. It displays a high capacity to filter out harmful substances from the foods we eat, and thus prevents their absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Also known as activated carbon, it is actually a form of elemental carbon obtained from natural materials such as nutshells, peat, wood, coal, all of which are processed to make a product with many void spaces, making it very porous. Its porosity allows it to adhere to various chemical compounds, and it has a high degree of surface area up to a tenth the size of a football field, attracting large quantities of toxins out of the human body.

Food poisoning is what we refer to conditions characterized by vomiting, fever, rashes, and related symptoms brought about by ingestion of foods that have been contaminated with harmful microbes and viruses or poisonous chemical compounds. It can occur anywhere especially in places with poor sanitary conditions, and, of late, quite often in restaurants. More than 20 people in a population of a hundred are reported to contract food-borne illnesses every year in the US alone.

Removes Toxins Related to Acute Poisoning

Activated charcoal works best against toxins right after ingestion, and thus intake of oral applications as soon as you feel the symptoms will significantly reduce all the harmful effects associated with the toxin. However, there are factors that may arise as a consequence to consumptions of activated charcoal. It is of utmost importance to call emergency services, like poison control center, and ask for dosage information especially if you are not fully aware of recommended administrations.

It can be purchased over the counter, and come in forms just like other medications, in pills, liquid, or suspension. Whatever the form is, take note to drink lots of water to facilitate fast removal of toxins. Most of the time, over-the-counter activated carbon products contain a substance called sorbitol, or glucitol, which is a sugar alcohol responsible for accelerating the evacuation of bowels. That being said, you should choose other forms of activated charcoal if you know you are allergic to sorbitol as it is known to cause adverse effects.

    Interferes with Digestion and Absorption

All forms of activated charcoal have been reported to interrupt the process of digestion and the consequent absorption of digested food products. This results, of course, in avoiding the passage of toxins through the gastrointestinal walls and into the bloodstream. However, this may also give rise to digestive problems, either diarrhea or constipation. The former is often associated with products having sorbitol and the latter with not enough water, which helps ease movement of food products.

While the use of activated charcoal is in fact a routine treatment of choice in emergency rooms, be sure you observe extra caution in following recommended dosages. If you don't know what you are doing, it is just prudent to seek professional help to avoid complications.

Activated charcoal is available in capsule form at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Solaray to ensure quality of what you buy for better health.

B-complex vitamins are chemical compounds that belong to the group of essential nutrients that are soluble in water. They are very important in chemical reactions taking place at the cellular level and responsible for the upkeep of tissues, especially during exposure to stress. In the case of the adrenal glands, the wearing down of tissues due to chronic stress is referred to as adrenal fatigue.

The adrenal glands influence a host of chemical reactions in the human body, and exhaustion is certain to contribute to these processes in a negative way. Sitting atop the kidney, they regulate the concentration of the solution going in and out of the kidneys. More importantly, they secrete a number of hormones that significantly affect our responses to stress, being a part of the endocrine system.

    Helps Fight Stress

Hydrocortisone, or cortisol, is one of the hormones released from the adrenal glands into the bloodstream to perform varying functions. It is commonly associated with stress, and thus dubbed the primary stress hormone. Its mechanism of action includes the breaking down of bioactive compounds such as fats, carbohydrates, and proteins into metabolites that can be converted into glucose in the liver in a process called gluconeogenesis. Glucose is then distributed to cells to be utilized as energy.

B vitamins maintain the stability between different factors that influence the overall health of the adrenal glands. Stress is known to take its toll on these glands among others particularly when the body is subjected to it in long stretches of time. Coupled by depleting levels of essential nutrients, or worse deficiency in other vitamins, the body is rendered susceptible to adrenal fatigue.

    Counters Pain Chemicals

Healthy adrenal glands suppress the release of inflammatory substances. Inflammation is one of the defense mechanisms of the body when potentially pathogenic foreign objects are detected by the immune system. This process is a biological stress response that initiates the healing process. The pain, swelling, and redness that characterize inflammation notably on body surfaces are brought on by certain substances implicated in inflammation, which the adrenal gland helps regulate.

In addition to protecting the adrenal glands, certain constituents of vitamin B complex play an active role in preventing painful inflammatory responses. As a matter of fact, deficiencies in vitamin B1 or thiamine, B2 or riboflavin, and B3 or niacin have long been documented to be the cause of specific cases of inflammation throughout the body, such as glossitis, dermatitis, pharyngitis, and many others.

    Prevents Adrenal Fatigue

The adrenal glands are almost always tied to hydrocortisone, but they produce many different hormones that play a role in keeping a functional homeostasis. Adrenal insufficiency, also known as Addison's disease, is the medical term for inadequate levels of hormones produced by the adrenal glands, which in health magazines popularized as adrenal fatigue.

Making sure you get the daily established values for B vitamins is one way to avoid the symptoms linked to adrenal fatigue and to keep your adrenal glands healthy. B-vitamins can help the body restore itself and maintain a healthy adrenal function. Look for B-vitamins at your local or internet vitamin store. always choose name brands like Solaray to ensure quality and purity of the product you buy for better health.

Calcium has become synonymous with strong bones, and it is one of the minerals that have established daily values today. Immobilization was one contributing factor to the high incidence of bone related diseases in the latter half of the 20th century, and this has been addressed with lifestyle changes and calcium supplements. Indeed with inactivity associated with sedentary lifestyle, individuals are subjected to continued bone loss, which in general manifest as osteoporosis in later life.

    Maintains Adequate Amounts of Calcium

The formation of bone tissue takes place throughout a lifetime in human beings. This is part of the bigger process called mineralization, in other words the body converts organic compounds into inorganic substances, which is, in the case of bone mineralization, almost always calcium. Serum calcium levels in the blood are an important indicator of health and even life-threatening diseases, the reason why we have recommended daily values for calcium.

The availability of calcium supplements nowadays have been a great help to every one of us. Not only has it increased the absorption and bioavailability of the needed calcium amounts, but also it has been successful in reversing certain diseases of the bones, notably osteoporosis. These supplements have taken into account other factors to ensure better absorption of calcium such as vitamin D.

    Improves Bone Density

Almost a hundred percent of calcium present in the human body is stored inside the bones, whose density actually varies at any given point in time. The bones inside the body have a mechanism of continually building and rebuilding bone tissues in a process called ossification. The use of calcium in the mineralization of bones is called calcification, which starts as early as the fetal stages of cartilage formation.

While ossification is believed to cover all bones by the time we turn 25 years of age, the body does not terminate this process at that time. The loss of continuity of bones following a physical trauma or impact of great force weakens the bones, but, with the right levels of calcium, ossification immediately takes place in the area of bone discontinuity.

    Prevents Diseases of the Bones

One thing that we should be aware of is that the bones break down without proper maintenance. The bones are the body's primary reserves of calcium, and thus a major donor of calcium necessitated by other body parts. This is evident in the breakdown of bone tissue in a process called re-absorption and the consequent transfer of calcium from the bones into the rest of the body. Unfortunately, this may lead to many diseases of the bones.

That being said, there are factors that minimize bone re-absorption. It is a fact that the physiological functions that influence re-absorption overbalance healthy formation of bones as we age owing to depleting levels of calcium and infrequent exercise, but the good news is calcium supplements can remedy this. Moreover, physical exertion has been identified to be inversely proportional to re-absorption, providing proper maintenance that stimulates bone growth.

Calcium is an plays an essential part in the whole body, you should be taking it daily. You can find Calcium supplement at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Solaray to ensure quality of what you buy for better health.

S-adenosylmethionine, commonly abbreviated as SAMe, is a chemical compound naturally produced by the human body to assist in many different metabolic processes. These chemical reactions are largely involved in the production of several hormones and neurotransmitters such dopamine, serotonin, and melatonin. The synthetic form marketed as SAMe has been proven safe as a dietary supplement and has been in use for over a decade now. A number of studies have indicated that daily supplementation of SAMe is responsible for removing the pain associated with osteoarthritis among others.

Joint pains are one of the many complaints tied to all types of arthritis, which in most cases involve inflammatory responses of the human body. Osteoarthritis, the most common type, is in fact a degenerative joint disease, which appears almost always with other age-related disease, but not really caused by the process of aging itself. The ends of bones literally wear down when they rub each other in that as we age some of the protective tissues inside the cartilage that surround the bones get depleted. S-adenosylmethionine has been cited many times to be at par with other drugs in use today to remove the pain characteristic of degenerative joint disease.

    Reduces Inflammatory Pain

Stiffness contributes to the pain, which is a consequence to the inflammation that ensues. It is a part of the body's mechanism to act on diseases of the joints the same way it deals with infection in other parts of the body, and in an attempt to remedy the breakdown of bone particles these mechanism produce inflammatory effects that bring about reduced range of movement. When the bone particles that have been discarded from the bones fill the space in the joints, the body tries to remove them, and this is when inflammatory agents enter the cavities and where pain actually takes place. Stiffness is experienced when new bony particles form along the joints in the form of protrusions that largely increase the surface area of the joints, significantly affecting joint movement.

A number of analgesics in the market today are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, popularly referred to as NSAIDs. As the name suggests, these drugs act on reducing inflammation. There have been a number of clinical trials that show the efficacy of S-adenosylmethionine, and many of these studies made comparisons with NSAIDs. SAMe, the synthetic form, has been proven effective even in short-term studies and have been reported to help morning stiffness and improve walking pace.

    Produces no Serious Side Effects

It is a known fact that S-adenosylmethionine has become popular among patients of arthritis due to the fact that it is in general considered safe when taken as a dietary supplement and strong anecdotal evidence point to the absence of adverse effects. That being said, diarrhea and headaches are the best known side effects in some patients while NSAIDs are known to produce gastrointestinal problems such as stomach ulcers and intestinal damage. Furthermore, regular intake of SAMe is believed to promote overall health.

SAMe is available at your local or internet vitamin store in capsule or tablet forms. Always choose name brands to ensure quality and purity of the product you buy for better health.

Nowadays, we hear the term Lutein in many advertisements and even among personal conversations. There are also many food supplements which contain lutein or lutein alone that are available in the market. Lutein is a yellow to orange plant pigment naturally found among fruits and vegetables. It is considered to be a carotenoid. Like any other carotenoids, lutein is important for the health of the eyesight. Carotenoid is necessary in the body because it is a precursor of vitamin A. Inside the body, carotenoid molecules are metabolized into vitamin A. Vitamin A is needed in the formation of retinaldehyde which is the main component of rhodopsin.

Rhodopsin is a chemical that allows our eyes to react and accommodate to light variations. Rhodopsin is stored in the rods and cones of the retina. These are the photoreceptors that make vision possible. When light strikes the rods and cones, a transient excitatory process of electrical energy is stimulated. The impulse will then be sent to the occipital cortex in the brain traveling through the optic nerve. The impulse will be processed and thus perceived as vision. An insufficient supply of vitamin A or any of its precursors may result to poor light adaptation and perception in low light areas or night blindness.

Lutein is related to beta-carotene and vitamin A. Like these compounds, lutein is also stored in the retinas of the eyes. It is considered as a color pigment of the human eye. It also filters light thus protecting the delicate tissues of the eyes and also the skin from sunlight damage. If normal levels of lutein are maintained, it may lower the risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. It can also help prevent or slow down the progression of atherosclerosis which is one of the primary precipitating factors of cardiovascular diseases.

The richest sources of lutein are carrots, squashes, oranges, and other orange and yellow fruits and vegetables. Fortunately, foods rich in lutein are not only limited to yellow or orange – colored fruits and vegetables. Other good sources also include broccoli, spinach, kale, corn, pepper, kiwi fruit, grapes, zucchini and other dark green leafy vegetables. Egg yolks are also great sources of lutein. Lutein is absorbed best when it is taken with a high-fat meal.

Research suggests that a minimum of 6-10 mg per day of lutein is required. But since lutein is available only in trace amounts in fruits and vegetables, even if you eat a balanced diet, you would need a large bowl of fresh spinach to get about 6 mg of lutein. Good thing, Lutein is widely available in many nutritional supplements and fortified foods and beverages for individuals who want to supplement their dietary intake of lutein, making their diet even better for their eyes and skin.

There have been neither reported side effects of lutein nor any adverse health reports from interactions between lutein and medications. However, the safest measure to be aware about possible interactions between your medication and any supplements is to seek medical opinion from a qualified healthcare provider before beginning lutein supplementation.

Lutein is available at your local or internet vitamin store in capsule, tablet, and chewable tablet forms. Look for it in quality brands like Solaray.

It is imperative that the safest measure to correct varicose veins is through diet modification and natural supplements. Those individuals who normally have low fiber intake could lead to pressure build up which could worsen varicose veins. Therefore, it is very critical to increase your fiber intake to eliminate stool effectively hence prevents straining during defecation. If you have those unwanted varicose veins then you should be vigilant enough in avoiding certain foods that could aggravate your problem. Foods like salt, alcohol, animal protein, sugar, processed and canned foods, ice cream and other dairy products. These foods may taste really delicious but be mindful of the consequences.

Fortunately, there are natural ways and means on how to combat varicose veins effectively. Before engaging on those sophisticated cures why not give these natural remedies a try. Extracts from horse chestnut, grape seeds, and pine bark are very effectual in giving varicose veins a remedy. What is common among horse chest nut, grapes and pine bark is the compound known as aescin, which is responsible in thwarting the release of enzymes that are injurious to the walls of the capillaries. Studies and researches that were conducted arrived with a common finding. The participants that utilized the above mentioned extracts showed significant improvement in their leg pains and there was a decrease in swelling that was noted compared to the control group that were only given with a placebo.

If you are interested in trying chestnut extract, it is advisable if you buy the manufactured products already because these products are already free from the toxic substance called esculin. The FDA has considered whole chestnut to be hazardous if used directly without undergoing the necessary steps that should be done. If you do not want to feel the wrath of chestnut then never allow yourself to take it as it is. Have the initiative to know the process on how to get rid of the harmful component. I tell you, it would be complex and very tedious hence if you're not confident and sure enough then never exert an effort to try.

Life is so precious just for you to put it at stake. By all means we should do our very best to protect it from any harm. Niacin is a B vitamin proven to reverse the effects of bad cholesterol and increase levels of good cholesterol. It has consistently shown to impact prognosis in patients of cholesterol-related illnesses. There is very strong scientific evidence that it prevents the formation of plaques within the linings of arteries by curbing the release of free fatty acids into the bloodstream and facilitates recovery against coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis by managing lipoproteins that cause thrombosis.

    Cholesterol

The organic compound that promotes the functional permeability of cell membranes and the viscosity of the lipid bilayer that makes up the cell membranes is called cholesterol. It is vital to human life. A significant fraction is synthesized in the liver and distributed to all cells by way of the bloodstream. In the cell membrane it regulates traffic of signaling molecules in and out of cells, acting as guardians in gateways called lipid rafts. It is also converted to bile and released to the small intestine, being a precursor to the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

    Triglycerides

Free fatty acids from the foods we eat are usually stored in triglycerides, which are broken down into smaller particles to be absorbed by the intestinal walls. Once they reach the liver, they are reformed into triglycerides to function as transports for cholesterol, which is not released into the bloodstream without the former. Triglycerides make up a part of organic compounds that display both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties, making an ideal transport in the water-based blood plasma.

    Lipoproteins

What we refer to as bad cholesterol are actually a group of biomolecules called lipoproteins whose structures comprise features of both proteins and lipids. Triglycerides are a major constituent of these lipoproteins, the bigger transports of triglycerides. The dichotomy of bad versus good cholesterol has surfaced in recent years owing to the fact that cardiovascular tissues attract some lipoproteins to accumulate in the arterial walls, which leads to the thinning of the arteries and the obstruction of normal blood flow. These notorious lipoproteins are also responsible for the formation of blood clots.

    Low-Density Lipoproteins

While cholesterol is a good indicator of cardiovascular diseases, the real risk lies in elevated levels of triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins, which carry cholesterol in the bloodstream. Other types of lipoproteins, also dubbed bad cholesterol, known as very-low-density lipoproteins transport other lipids to body cells. These two groups of lipoproteins pose higher risk factors for coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis and is the target of cholesterol-lowering drugs.

    High-Density Lipoproteins

The types of lipoproteins that transport cholesterol from the cells back to the liver for excretion are called high-density lipoproteins, which are identified as the good cholesterol as they do not get entrenched in the blood vessel walls. The mechanism of action by which niacin helps cholesterol serum levels is twofold: it raises levels of high-density lipoproteins and lowers low-density lipoproteins, or colloquially speaking, more good cholesterol, less bad cholesterol.

Niacin can help against the fight with high cholesterol levels. You can find niacin at your local or internet vitamin store in 100mg, 500mg, or 1000mg dosages. Always choose name brands like Solaray to ensure quality of the niacin you buy for better health.

Bioflavonoids are biological chemicals that can be extracted among many plants to fulfill various functions. Bioflavonoids are natural pigments found in fruits and vegetables. These important pigments are responsible for the colors of flowers such as yellow, red or blue for the purpose of attracting insects to make pollination possible.

Aside from its plant benefits, bioflavonoids also have a manifold of health benefits on animals especially humans. Studies have reported that there are over eight hundred beneficial bioflavonoids. About three – fourth of these are the yellow pigments found abundantly in citrus fruits and moderately with other fruits and vegetables. Many individuals used to term bioflavonoids as vitamin P. However, nutrition scientists oppose this notion because it has yet to be proved that they are not only beneficial but also, more importantly, essential to human nutrition and health.

Many researchers have been experimenting on bioflavonoids and they have discovered numerous possible benefits. The health-promoting effects of bioflavonoids include:

    1. Improved cardiovascular health and increased capillary strength. Some researchers take into account that bioflavonoids can maintain the integrity of capillaries. Capillaries are very small blood vessels where exchange of nutrients and waste occurs. Capillaries allow the oxygen, hormones, nutrients, and small antibodies to pass from the body's bloodstream to the cells. If the blood vessels' walls are too fragile, the capillaries may easily break allowing the blood to seep out of the vessels. This may result to easy bruising, brain and retinal hemorrhages, bleeding gums and other bleeding tendencies.

    2. Better vision and healthy eyes, and a stronger immune system. Bioflavonoids work so closely together with vitamin C. Nutrition experts have stated that vitamin C and many bioflavonoids need each other to produce the effects that they have on the immune system.

    3. Improved structure of connective tissues and appearance of skin. This is the major benefit of bioflavonoids. It prevents cellular damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are thought to be biological waste products with unstable molecules formed when the body burns oxygen during metabolic processes.

    4. Lowering the risk of some diseases, such as atherosclerosis, cancer, arthritis, bleeding tendencies and gastrointestinal disorders.

The therapeutic effects, on the other hand, include treating a variety of diseases and disorders. Several of these are coronary heart disease, allergic reactions, inflammation, hemorrhoids, respiratory diseases, viral infections, some types of cancer, and peptic ulcers. Bioflavonoids are also found to have a therapeutic effect on phlebitis and other clotting disorders.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance for bioflavonoids has not yet been established but studies show that if a diet contains enough fruits and vegetables, the benefits mentioned above will be obtained. Bioflavonoids are abundant in the pulp and rinds of citrus fruits and other foods that are rich in vitamin C, including apricots red wine, blackberries, green tea, black currants onions, broccoli, grapes, grapefruit seeds, apples, cantaloupes, cherries, oranges and lemons and other fruits and berries. In fact, researchers have found that some of the functions that vitamin C is credited with is actually from the bioflavonoids.

You can find bioflavonoids individually or combined with vitamin C at your local or internet vitamin store. always choose name brands like Solaray to ensure quality of what you buy for better health.

Cliché it may sound, but the statement "prevention is better than cure" still holds true up to this present time, and in this modern world that we all settle. After all, our health lies in our very hands.

If left unchecked, constipation can cause hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are unpleasant and hard to manage and could eventually need surgery. By boosting fiber and occasionally using herbal laxatives, one can completely eliminate constipation and live a normal life free from the problems associated with constipation.

Look for herbal laxatives at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Natures Way to ensure quality of what you buy for better colon health.

Vitamin C is perhaps the best known of all essential nutrients, with children already knowing it's important for good health. Starting in the latter half of the 20th century it has been common knowledge that it is responsible for warding off a number of illnesses, and thus making sure we get it from the foods we eat is just prudent. L-ascorbic acid, the active form of the vitamin in the body, is just another identified nutrient to the average guy, but, to the scientific community, it is one of the most potent among all known antioxidants, in addition to its other physiological functions.

The word antioxidant is all too well known in recent years, but up to now remains quite an abstraction to the general populace. How does it help improve health exactly?

The human body has a complex defense mechanism, and part of this is the deployment of toxic substances at small amounts for the sole purpose of destroying harmful entities at the cellular level. These substances are the infamous free radicals, whose activities have proven effective against pathogenic microorganisms, but at the same time destructive to living cells. To keep their numbers in check, the body makes use of other compounds that program the death of free radicals following the latter's completion of their permitted function.

While in the body's employ, free radicals are one of the things the immune system can't do without. The activities of cells in connection with the proper disposal of intracellular wastes, including bad bacteria, occur with the participation of free radicals. To sum it up, the cells consume the bacteria in an effort to rid of it, and the free radicals inside the cells complete the job. Another problem ensues when the cells are not capable of ridding of the free radicals they utilize.

Damage to the cells is no doubt what the mainstream press has associated free radicals with, but it can be more serious than that. The medical community is convince that free radicals are involved in the death of cells at an alarming rate, and even the modification of DNA, resulting in the formation and quick progression of certain diseases, such as cancer. This is the reason why the body needs the aid of antioxidant especially in times of stress when the capacity of the human body to deal with free radicals is significantly reduced.

The good news is that we have powerful antioxidants at our disposal. With our continued exposure to every day stress, intake of Vitamin C ensures cellular health by providing each cell an enhanced capability to act against free radicals. The ion of L-ascorbic acid known as ascorbate is the most reliable compound with antioxidant properties inasmuch as the human body has developed ways to effectively utilize it, even using this compound in the manufacture of other antioxidants. With that, getting your daily dose of Vitamin C should be at the top of your list of healthy habits.

Vitamin C is available in capsule or tablet forms in 250mg, 500mg, and 1000mg potency at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands of Vitamin C like Solaray to ensure quality and purity of the product you buy for better health.

All of us feel a growing concern for our body as we age. We try to avoid the foods that are unhealthy while we love foods high in fat. For some people, the thought of consuming fatty foods is enough to make them squirm. It is a fact that nowadays fat is equated with morbid conditions almost all the time. What we should know is that we need to maintain healthy levels of fats, especially essential fatty acids, instead of avoiding them altogether. Knowing which among your sources of food bring risk factors to your health will certainly help you cut down on the unhealthy kinds of fats.

    Bad Fats

You can safely assume that trans fats are the most dangerous of all fats, and are the ones established to have an effect on the formation of several cardiovascular diseases. There was a surge in popularity for the use of trans fats in the mass production of canned goods and other preserved foods in the latter half of the 20th century since trans fats have shown to increase the shelf life of processed foods.

The scientific community, especially in North America, was convinced that trans fat coming from plants was healthier than the saturated fats from animals. Before long, the increasing rate of cardiovascular diseases associated with trans fat became a public health problem, and ensuing studies point to the active role trans fats play in the mortality in populations known to consume trans fats.

Today governments have changed their position concerning the use of trans fats, which in fact has been banned in some countries in Europe. The same reason why it is always prudent to avoid processed foods and other known sources of trans fats. Baking shortenings, margarine, and commercial oils used in deep-frying are identified to have the highest levels of trans fats.

    Good Fats

Essential fatty acids are the kinds of fats that we need to make sure we get from our diet. They are essential in that the human body necessitates its presence but unable to biosynthesized them. There are only two identified essential fatty acids: (1) ALA or alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, and (2) LA or linolenic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid. Individuals who have poor nutrition must also consume the following fatty acids: gamma linolenic acid, lauric acid, and palmitoleic acid.

Fish and most seafood like shellfish are rich in essential fatty acids as do oils coming from linseed, canola, hemp, and soya and seeds of chia, pumpkin, and sunflower. Green leafy vegetables in general are a good source of essential fatty acids.

The right levels of fatty acids in the body are necessary for human life, and the incorporation of fats in our diet are actually healthy. That being said, keep in mind that too much fat in our diets will never be considered healthy. Essential fatty acids in particular are indicators of good health, and their absence or imbalance in the body is a factor in many known diseases.

Essential Fatty Acids are available at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Source Naturals to ensure quality of the EFA supplement you buy for better health.

Bioflavonoids, or simply flavonoids, are chemical compounds that are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom. All plants capable of photosynthesis contain flavonoids, which are the most common polyphenols that we get from plant sources in our diet. Polyphenolic substances are famed for their in vitro activities against many different diseases and believed to possess properties that promote the overall health of the animals that consume them, including human beings.

Phytochemicals are any chemical compounds naturally occurring in plants, and thus bioflavonoids are phytochemicals with polyphenolic properties and molecular structures. While we may be able to get certain levels of bioflavonoids from all fruits and vegetables, berries and citrus fruits in general are known to be very good sources of these phytochemicals. In recent years, teas, especially green tea, have been identified to contain very high concentrations of flavonoids, leading to a surge in consumptions of tea and known sources of flavonoids as well as a well-publicized campaign for polyphenols.

    Anti-inflammatory

Polyphenolic compounds have been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is a process of healing, and one of the defense mechanisms in use by the human body against harmful cellular debris and pathogenic microbes such as bacteria, protozoans, fungi, and even viruses. Cells and tissues contain signaling molecules collectively known as eicosanoids, which are responsible for a number of processes implicated in inflammatory immune responses, and bioflavonoids have an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of these molecules.

At the onset of an inflammatory response, signaling molecules present almost everywhere in the human body alert the immune system to take action. When tissues detect the presence of invasive pathogens, eicosanoids bring about chemical reactions that trigger the release of antibodies into the site of inflammation. It has been observed that certain classes of flavonoids, especially flavonols like quercitin, certain groups of eicosanoids that give rise to the redness, swelling, and pain characteristic of inflammation.

    Anti-cancer

The advent of radical chemistry at the turn of the 20th century pointed to compounds called reactive oxygen species present in the human body, and of special note is their alleged role in the formation of abnormal cellular structures, resulting in the common belief that they are carcinogenic agents. Reactive oxygen species are by-products of chemical processes taking place anywhere in the body that involve the participation of oxygen. They bring on damaging effects at the cellular level, and, as the name suggests, are very reactive when not promptly disposed of.

What we refer to as free radicals are the best known reactive oxygen species. Cellular functions are challenged when the ability of the body to detoxify free radicals is significantly compromised, and it is now believed that the cellular damage free radicals cause give rise to cancerous cells. Polyphenolic substances have gained widespread popularity over the years largely owing to the discovery of their antioxidant properties when ingested. Today, bioflavonoids are among the most popular antioxidants, and have been in extensive use in recent researches in the ongoing battle against cancer.

You can find bioflavonoid complex supplements at your local or internet vitamin store. always choose name brands like Now Foods to ensure quality and purity of the product you buy for better health.

We have varying eating habits, but one way or another we seem to be concerned about maintaining a normal weight, which we always associate with body fats. Many of us have turned to different weight-loss programs to do away with fats, and one regimen proven to be healthy includes the use of lipotropics as supplements.

Apart from the fact that the sight of fats on our inner thighs and other body parts has been considered unappealing nowadays, too much fat in the body has also been tied to a lot of illnesses that every single one of us dreads so much, such as cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and diabetes mellitus. These fats are the one thing we want to lose in our efforts to attain a normal, healthy weight.

One thing that we should know about fats before we adopt any weight-loss program, or modifying our diet for that matter, is that the human body necessitates their presence in countless physiological functions. Fats are vital to human life, and depriving ourselves the right amounts of fats coming from our diet just to lose fat fast is definitely detrimental to all systems of our body. It won't take long to feel the harmful effects of programs that practically starve you.

    Fat Metabolism

A better approach to losing weight is to make good use of the fat reserves in our body and not remove the fats and essential fatty acids from our diet, which stipulates that we do not overindulge on fatty foods either. With a sedentary lifestyle, this might sound unachievable. However, with the right levels of lipotropics present in our cells, the body can convert fats to energy, and even spur you to action.

How is this possible? Lipotropics are chemical compounds naturally occurring in our body since birth, and their job is to burn fats by breaking them down into substances implicated in cellular activities. However, a number of these compounds become steadily less as we age, and result in the storing of unused fats, forming body parts we hate to see. Coupled with a daily routine that does not stimulate the utilization of fats already in our body, diet high in fats will visibly build up through the years.

    Major Lipotropics

Lipotropic supplements take care of the fats that we can't seem to get rid of. In fact, the lipotropics most active in the human body are not endogenous, that is, our systems are incapable of manufacture these lipotropic substances at adequate levels, if at all. One amino acid called methionine, which displays major lipotropic activities in human beings and serves as an intermediate to the synthesis of other amino acids and lipids, is not biosynthesized in all mammals. Choline, another lipotropic, is now identified as an essential nutrient in that its presence in cells decreases with age.

Supplementation of lipotropics means healthier cells in addition to the fact that it helps strip those unwanted fat deposits. Look for lipotropic supplements at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Solaray to ensure quality of the product you buy for better health.

Just as the heart is always kept in good health, damage to the liver must not be taken so lightly. The liver singled-handedly processes almost all bioactive substances like carbohydrates and lipids from the intestines and the stomach and distributes micronutrients to the rest of the body. It is the body's first defense against toxic substances in anything that we ingest, for example, ethanol.

The liver is the only organ in the human body capable of physical regeneration, and rebounds from damage at a very fast rate. However, this also depends on the nutrition of the individual and related medical conditions. Diet plays a role on the daily wear and tear of the liver throughout a lifetime. Watching what you eat and intake of liver supplements known to display restorative properties will help the liver heal fast.

There are substances that are identified to have deleterious effects on the liver, that is, the damage they do sort of compounds in time until the liver is unable to cope with their continued presence, resulting in liver failure. These substances include certain over-the-counter drugs such as acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol, and, of course, alcohol.

The cells that make up most of the liver tissue are called hepatocytes, accounting for up to 80 per cent of the liver mass. These cells are also responsible for virtually every liver function, and are subjected to the toxins that we ingest along with our foods. All substances that are absorbed by the intestinal walls undergo a very thorough process of metabolism within hepatocytes, which evaluates the substances as either harmful or not, and get detoxified if they are.

This process called first-pass effect contributes to the bioavailability of drugs, which are significantly reduced when they reach the systematic circulation. Hepatocytes in general remove the harmful effects of drugs by removing the constituents that are poisonous when distributed to the rest of the body. Alcohol, on the other hand, reaches the bloodstream while practically bypassing hepatocytes as the metabolic process involving alcohol spans at least 90 minutes to break down an ounce of ethanol.

Even with its renowned regenerative properties, the liver has its own limits, and can be rendered susceptible to scarring and incapable of countering the spread of fibrous tissues and nodules. It is imperative that we keep in check our intake of liver-damaging substances, and, of course, consume foods that do not contribute to the formation of scar tissues in the liver in the long run.

Green leafy vegetables have always been good for the liver, and there are liver supplements that promote the overall health of the liver. Foods that display natural detoxicating properties inside the human body include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. Milk thistle, in particular, has been extensively involved in treatments against a number of liver diseases.

Keep in mind that symptoms of toxicity are certain to occur in the absence of micronutrients that protect the liver cells, and deficiencies are known risk factors to liver failure.

You can find milk thistle and other wonderfyl liver supplements at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Thompson Nutritional or Solaray when choosing a quality milk thistle supplement to ensure purity of what you by for better health.

Lecithin is a group of chemical compounds naturally occurring in both plants and animals, and is responsible for the yellow pigmentation in egg yolk. It is rich in choline and phosphatidylcholine, all of which are precursors to acetylcholine, the only neurotransmitter present in all parts of the nervous system, and thus a subject of studies concerning disorders of the nervous system, including its purported role in the enhancement of cognitive functions like memory and intelligence.

Phosphatidylcholine was the first constituent of lecithin to be isolated, which, as early as the first half of the 19th century, was identified to be present in the blood, bile, brain tissue in human beings as well as in eggs, fish roe, and sheep brain. Due to its high solubility properties in water, oils, fats, and other organic solvents, lecithin has been used in the large-scale productions of most food and pharmaceutical products such as candies, low-fat mayonnaise, cocoa products as well as intravenous fat infusions and animal feed. Also, its emulsifying properties make an ideal ingredient in dough, which with the addition of lecithin increases in volume and mixes ingredients more evenly.

    Cellular Health

The human body makes use of lecithin in many different ways, but readily incorporates phosphatidylcholine in cells, where it is one of the major phospholipids that make up the cell membranes. Hence, phosphatidylcholine is in fact an important component of cellular organisms and exist in all cells of the human body, protecting the interior of the cells from the outside environment and regulating the passage of nutrients and other substances into the cells.

    Cholinergic Neurotransmission

Lecithin also plays a crucial role in the synthesis of acetylcholine, which is the exclusive neurotransmitter in certain parts of the nervous system apart from the fact that it is utilized by receptors in synaptic transmission elsewhere. The part of the nervous system that influences heart rate, respiration, digestion, and perspiration is entirely cholinergic, that is uses acetylcholine as its sole neurotransmitter. The same is true for the system involved in the voluntary movements of body parts such as the lower limbs when walking or the fingers when typing.

    Memory-enhancing Activities

There has been a growing support for the use of lecithin in studies that find ways to enhance the memory as acetylcholine is active in the central nervous system as well. Especially upon waking up, acetylcholine is central to the activation of our sensory perception. Of special note is the evident utilization of cholinergic neurotransmission at times of concentration, leading to the belief that certain concentrations of acetylcholine in the human body contributes to attaining focused attention.

Impairment of cholinergic functions has been linked to mental retardation, notably in senility characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. While comprising up to 90 percent of cell membranes throughout infancy, the fact that choline and phosphatidylcholine become steadily less available in age has been associated to most diseases of the elderly. Since lecithin is completely absorbed by the body without any toxic effects, its consumption is recommendable.

You can find Lecithin rich in brain boosting elements at your local or internet vitamin store in capsules of bulk powder forms. Always choose name brands like Now Foods to ensure quality and purity of the product you buy for better health.
