Article Title: Want Results? Avoid Beauty Contests When It Comes To Package Design

Marketers will often turn to focus groups for feedback on current or proposed packaging design. Unfortunately, traditional focus groups tend to mimic beauty contests. They turn into opinion gathering sessions that support a participant's point of view, rather than providing feedback on consumers' actual buying behavior within the store environment where products are purchased.

Participants play art director over design issues, confuse the brand with the package design, react emotionally to price increase questions, and talk about what they "like" and "don't like". As a result, the output quality of this type of research is minimal at best.

On the other hand, effective behavior-based focus group research measures the effect of brand influence, analyzes the buying behavior of participants in a comparative retail environment, and uses eye-tracking technology to find out what consumers pay attention to – and what they ignore.

    The significance of brand influence

Effective brand value testing involves separating the brand name from the actual proposed or current package design. This measurement gives an indication of how the brand is perceived prior to seeing a packaged product. Participants are then introduced to the packaging and asked if the new or proposed package design adds, or detracts from, perceived brand value. Marketers may be making a costly mistake if the perceived value of a brand is negatively affected by a new design architecture.

Buying behavior of participants in a retail environment

Packaging design is measured and tested in the comparative marketplace for which it is intended. A comparative marketplace is one in which the competition sits side by side for comparison and consideration. This is a circumstance that does not usually occur in print and broadcast media; as competitors usually do not jockey to be side-by-side.

According to Wharton School research, over one third of the brands displayed on the shelf are never seen. A colorful and exciting new design that is approved in the boardroom or chosen in a focus group may fail if all the other packages on the shelf in the same category are equally as colorful and exciting. Contrast is what makes a package design stand out on the shelf, and this can be achieved through the effective means of both design and structural innovation.

    Eye-tracking technology

Consumers spend 2-3 seconds scanning a package for relevant information. If they do not immediately comprehend the benefit they will move on to a competitor's brand. It is imperative to know what consumers are seeing and what they are not, and this can be done effectively with eye-tracking technology. This type of research gives marketers an idea of which messaging to prioritize, and which information to minimize.

Not surprisingly, the more text there is on a package, the less it will be read. Unfortunately, many well-meaning marketers think the opposite, and act accordingly. Some of the product designers at Microsoft have put together a great parody of this practice by showing how the Microsoft marketing department would redesign Apple's iPod package. Instead of the simple and elegant messaging Apple created, it becomes a hodgepodge of system requirements, badges, call-outs, sub-branding logos, benefit statements, feature lists, and more!

Effective behavior-based focus group research goes beyond "opinion gathering", giving researchers the feedback necessary to understand the impact and value of both present, and proposed packaging design in real-world terms.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes you may wonder what diabetic diet food is, in other words what you can and can't eat.

Of course everyone's metabolism is different, so there are no hard and fast rules. Much of deciding which diabetic diet food is right for you is a matter of trial and error. You need to test your blood sugar after eating certain foods and if it's high, leave those foods out of your diet or cut down on them.

Follow these 5 tips to lay the foundations of your diet.

    1. Be careful of snacking. Many snack foods are high in carbohydrates so are not suitable diabetic diet food. Try to avoid crisps, salted nuts, biscuits, cakes and sweets. Great snacks are strips of raw vegetables such as celery, carrots, green or red pepper and cucumber. Unsalted nuts and fresh or dried fruits are also fine. If you must eat chocolate, have a couple of squares of dark chocolate high in coco solids or if you can buy it, unsweetened dark chocolate.

    2. Eat whole grain or wholemeal bread and pasta as well as brown or basmati rice. Wholemeal carbohydrates are so much better for you than the over-processed white varieties. There are lots of different breads available containing seeds and whole grains and they have really great flavour! Potatoes are also good carbohydrates as long as they're not smothered in oil for roasting or butter if they're boiled. Try dry roasting potato wedges with a sprig of rosemary or a spoonful of cumin seeds. They'll taste so good that you won't miss the fat and if the oven is hot enough, they'll still be crispy.

    3. Watch your alcohol intake. Beer is full of sugar so unless you can get the pilsner variety with all the sugar brewed out, avoid it if possible. Cocktails are also bad news, unless you know exactly what's gone into them but many contain sugar syrup so also best avoided. Spirits with a calorie free mixer such as tonic or cola are ok occasionally and a glass of red wine comes highly recommended as it contains anti-oxidants which are good for your heart.

    4. Make sure that you eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Veggies don't have to be boring and they are the best diabetic diet food. Try mixing chopped courgette, aubergine, red pepper and red onion with a couple of bashed garlic cloves and a sprinkling of olive oil and seasoning. Roast in a medium oven for 20 minutes. Steaming green vegetables keeps more of the goodness in than boiling. You can cook fruit or leave it raw as dessert but use artificial sweeteners rather than sugar, if you're cooking it.

    5. Drink lots of water. This is good for you whether you're diabetic or not. It's quite easy to drink a glass of water every hour so if you sit at a computer, have a reminder pop up or leave glasses of water ready to drink scattered around the house. Drinking water keeps you hydrated and keeps the kidneys functioning as they should.

Follow these tips on the right diabetic diet food and you'll control your weight and your diabetes.

For a lot of us, our lives are chaotic and jam-packed. Our work, taking care of the kids, the endless errands, exercise, social events, and the daily stresses of life can invade our days so much that the last thing we think about is this: am I getting enough sleep, and is it the right kind of sleep I need?

It's astonishing that 40% of adults do not get the sleep they need to function to their optimum potential. A lack of sleep is vital to our well-being and can have serious repercussions if neglected.

What I'd like to do today is do a "fly-by" into the sleep world: You'll find out what it is, how it works, why we need it, and the amount we need to be healthy. So, off we go into the mysterious world of sleep.

    Sleep: What is it?

Sleep can be defined as a state of unconsciousness. During sleep, the brain is more responsive to internal stimuli rather than external stimuli.

    How Do We Sleep?

Researchers of human sleep have discovered five defined stages of sleep using EEG recordings and polysomnography. Their findings are as follows:

Non-Rem (NREM) sleep: Occupies 75-80% of total sleep time

Stage 1: This stage is sometimes referred to as "drowsy sleep". It appears at the onset of sleep and acts as a transition stage into

Stage 2: This stage can be associated with hypnagogic hallucinations (dreamlike images, sounds or sometimes smells before falling asleep or waking up), a loss of muscle tone, and a conscious awareness of the external environment. This stage can be thought of as a gateway between wake and sleep, also be defined as "sleep spindles". Conscious awareness of the environment disappears. This occupies 45-55% of your total sleep.

Stage 3: This stage is primarily a transition into stage four. This stage occupies 3-8% of total sleep time.

Stage 4: This stage is true delta sleep. It predominates the first third of the night, occupying 10-15% of total sleep time. This is the deepest stage of sleep, and is difficult to wake up a person while they are in Stage 4. Night terrors and sleepwalking occur in this stage.

    Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep

Stage 5: This stage is associated with dreaming, including strange visual and random dreams. Rem sleep is largely found in the final third of sleep, linking it to our circadian rhythm (aids in coordinating the timing of our internal bodily functions, including sleep, as well as our interactions with the external world) and body temperature. In an EEG, his period is active in the mind and appears similar to that of Stage 1.

    Why Do We Need Sleep?

For our health. Sleep plays a vital role in our daily regimen. As we sleep, our body is able to recharge and rejuvenate tired body organs and tissues while restoring the body to an alert state. This is also when your brain commits new information to memory through a process called memory consolidation.

For our waistlines. Chronic sleep deprivation may cause weight gain by affecting the way your body processes and stores carbohydrates and by altering levels of hormones that control appetite.

For safety. If you do not get enough sleep, you are more likely to feel sleepy during the day. This sleepiness increases your risk of falls and mistakes such as traffic accidents and work errors.

For happiness. A lack of sleep can result in irritability, impatience, problems with concentration, and moodiness. Sleep loss can also make you too tired to do activities you enjoy.

For a healthy heart. Research has found a link between serious sleep disorders and hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, and irregular heartbeat.

To stay strong. A lack of sleep weakens your immune system.

    How Much Sleep is Needed?

The amount of sleep an individual requires varies from person to person due to lifestyle and health issues. But as a basic rule of thumb, most adults require an average of eight hours of sleep. Children and teenagers, because they are still growing and developing, require approximately nine to ten hours of sleep.

So as you can see, sleep is essential to our health and well-being. Make sleeping important to you and schedule it if necessary. You will notice that with enough sleep, you will be happier, more at peace, and have a sharper mind to make it through your sometimes chaotic day.

I wish you a wonderful slumber and many happy dreams!

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Every thought and emotion affects your health. A holistic health approach encompasses treating the whole person: the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Traditional cultures have known for thousands of years that these aspects are intimately connected. Every food we eat, every thought we entertain, every emotion we feel and every interaction we experience impacts overall health.

Many blame their health problems on genetics, a virus, toxins in the air, and stress. While these factors can contribute to illness, very often problems result from a lack of fundamental health-enhancing qualities such as responsibility, a strong will, family support, passion, a balanced lifestyle and a knowledge of good health. Without these, whatever modality is chosen becomes just another pill to be taken and discarded when symptoms disappear.

When disease is artificially removed without changing the underlying cause, long-term health will NOT be achieved. The quick fix approach brings little or no permanent success. I am not suggesting that we abandon medical treatment. I am recommending that we look for the deeper causes of the problem from a physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and lifestyle perspective. We need to take the holistic health perspective. Lasting solutions can be found to multiple illnesses of society by getting at the root of the problem holistically.

I have observed patterns among those who have successfully reversed health problems. These traits are not rigid models. We all have them to some degree. They are holistic health approaches that each of us can maximize in our own unique way to return to our natural state of health.

Here are some very important steps you must take to achieve optimal holistic health. I can assure you that by putting these into practice, your overall health will be much improved! Sometimes you have to reevaluate what it is that you are doing with your life. By doing this, you will start to see the big picture.

Lets start with the first step, RESPONSIBILITY. This means not blindly accepting the opinion of some outside authority as the only way. Take a look at your previous choices for they may have led you to the problem. Then recognize that you can make new choices to remedy the situation.

I am not telling you to stop seeing your health practitioner. I am suggesting that you gather as much information as possible and make your own decisions. Taking responsibility is meant to empower us to make new choices for a healthier result.

Next is AWARENESS, which simply is deeply knowing yourself by observing your thoughts and beliefs, your choices and outcomes, and your response to the world around you. As you observe, ask questions. Do you believe you can recover your health? What does the illness have to teach you? Why do you make the choices you make? What do you need to know? Through questioning you will discover the things that seemed unchangeable are actually flexible and can be manipulated.

PROPER NUTRITION is the cornerstone of good health. Health and longevity depend on our daily nourishment. In 1988, the Surgeon General stated that two-thirds of the deaths in this country are related to diet. Our eating habits play a major role in many common diseases and emotional disorders.

Most Americans have a limited awareness of the power of food in maintaining health and reversing disease. The most effective diet includes whole grains, vegetables, low fat, no cholesterol, proteins and fruits.

LETTING GO OF THE PAST. Resolving conflicts and discovering their positive impact in our lives is paramount in healing. Resentment, anger, guilt and all negative emotional states are self-poisoning. They weaken cells and immunity and can be the reason for illness. Let it go and move on.

FAITH and the developing of sound judgments are important qualities in healing. Faith is knowing there is an order and unity to life, a sense of wholeness and connectedness with something larger than oneself. With faith, unlimited opportunities unfold, and we gain a sense of confidence in our choices.

FINDING YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE is prevalent among those who are healthy. Everyone has talents and skills through which they express themselves, and so do you! If you do not find your unique creative expression, you will be restless and frustrated, regardless of the success in the conventional world.

Purpose stimulates a deep sense of fulfillment and joy. With purpose, your life will take on much more meaning. I did not have a purpose for many years. The second I knew where I was going my life took a turn for the best. If you do not have purpose yet, do not worry! Focus on what makes you the happiest and visualize where and what you want to be. By working toward a goal and a purpose, you will feel alive and ready for anything.

Each of the above factors has a profoundly positive influence on your health and are more effective when bring them together. When utilized, you can go beyond sickness to health and happiness. Start with small steps and build upon them for a holistic approach to your health. Action is the only thing preventing you from achieving optimal health.

Knowing what is in the foods you eat is so important if you want to live a healthy lifestyle. Researchers have found that those who took a few extra seconds to read food labels ate 6% less fat than people who did not!

I think we can all agree that deciphering these labels can be a bit overwhelming. All the terms, the measurements: it can be taxing at times. But you really don't have to read every single word and line to get a good idea of what it is you are putting into your body.

Every word on a food label has a meaning, so educating yourself on the definitions behind the words can help you to choose foods that will be good for your body. It will only take a few seconds to glance at the labels, but you can quickly size up a product and determine if it is good for you, or if you should pass it by.

Knowing how to read food labels can be especially helpful if you know you need to include more of something in your diet. Doctor says you need more fiber? Then make sure the food label reads a higher fiber content. Need to lose weight and cut back on your fat? Chose food whose labels have a low fat content.

Now obviously, fruits and vegetables will not come with labels. These foods come as they are with no hidden surprises. The foods we want to check into more thoroughly are the ones that are packaged.

How Do I Check Food Labels?

Let's take a look below at some of the most common descriptions found on food labels:

Fat Content: Always start here. Eating less fat is important in maintaining our health, proper weight, and vitality. Your consumption of fat should never be above 30 percent of your total calories for the day: approximately 50 grams a day. Check the label and see what the percentage of fat is. If the percentage is high, you'll be better off to pass it up.

Fiber Content: Your total fiber intake a day should be around 25 to 30 grams a day. Proper fiber consumption helps to lower cholesterol, prevent constipation, and improve your blood sugar, as well as help you to deter heart disease and stroke.

Sodium: You want your sodium intake per day to be below 2400 mg. Many processed foods are loaded with sodium, so make sure you keep this number as low as possible when selecting your foods.

Calories: You need to use your discretion here. Make sure the amount of calories in a particular food is reasonable. You would be surprised how some packaged foods over inflate their calorie count! Most of us need about 2000 calories a day to maintain a healthy body, so make sure all the food you eat in one day does not go overboard on the calorie count.

Nutrients: Food labels will not list every single vitamin and mineral included in the food. The most common nutrients that will be listed, though, include calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and iron. Each nutrient will come attached with a percentage (known as the Daily Value) that will let you know how much of that nutrient can be found in one serving of the food you are looking at. So for example, if calcium has a daily value of 20 percent in a particular food, then you will need to consume another 80 percent of calcium to get in the required daily amount.

Listing of ingredients: Ingredients on a label are listed in descending order by weight, giving you an idea of how much an ingredient is included as compared to the others listed.

I have a basic rule of thumb I try to follow when selecting my foods. I do not believe that foods should be overloaded with a host of ingredients that cannot be pronounced or understood. If it seems like the food label is flooded with chemicals and preservatives, it is probably best to pass it up. These processed foods are not nearly as good for you as whole foods in their original state.

Reading food labels can really provide you with a lot of information beneficial to you. Be smart when you shop, take a few extra seconds to read the food labels, and you will be on your way to becoming a healthy shopper!

Article Title: Do You Have What It Takes To Run A Home Based Business? (part Two)

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

In order to start a home based business you need to have an entrepreneurial spirit and you also need to be a self-starter. If you like to procrastinate and have to be coaxed and prodded to get your work done at your day job, then you probably do not have the discipline to start and run your own business from home.

According to experts, in order to successfully run a home based business you need to have what is referred to as the "completion gene." In other words you have to be industrious when it comes to getting started with your home based business but you also have to have enough stamina and persistence to keep it going. When you first start out with your business you are heady and excited and completely "up" for the challenge but will you still have the same enthusiasm and vitality in a year's time, or two years, or three? As well there are bound to be hard times when it comes to your business. Are you prepared to deal with those? If yes then you are likely on the right track. If not then perhaps you should stick with your nine to five job for the time being.

While breaks are important, too many breaks and too much down time is likely to make you look unreliable in the eyes of clients and this will cause you to lose business. If you cannot do work and deliver it on time then this will be a hindrance to the development of your business. It is extremely important when you start a home based business to set realistic goals for yourself and re-evaluate them as needed and to devise a routine for yourself that works. Schedule time to work as opposed to doing it haphazardly and fitting an hour or two in here and there around grocery shopping, laundry and picking up the kids from school. Always take the time to review what your priorities are and if something is not working then figure out why and attempt to look at it another way.

Be aware that financial responsibilities are completely on the shoulders of a home business owner and when you do not work for a day or two or a week or two, there is no money coming in which can be burdensome to many. Self-employed individuals do not enjoy vacation pay, holiday pay or paid sick days. As well self-employed people must bear the brunt of such things as health insurance, life insurance, retirement savings, cost of childcare and so on.

While self-employed people are entitled to some breaks on taxes it is usually not enough to offset the extra cost of other expenses. Both Medicare taxes as well as Social Security taxes must be paid in full by the home business owner and these two things alone amount to approximately 15 percent of an individual's income. As well there is also federal income tax to think about and local taxes. In some cases self-employed people may have a spouse who is covered for health and life insurance through their place of work but some people do not enjoy these benefits.

Be aware that many financial institutions will not lend to home based business owners because they consider it too much of a risk to do so. In fact some banks need to see proof that a self-employed person has successfully run a home based business for a period of two years before they will even look at a loan application.

If you are seeking acne scar treatment, you should be well informed of the various methods of acne scar treatment and what they involve before proceeding with any treatment. You should also bear in mind that the success of acne scar treatment is dependent on various other factors besides the type and severity of the acne scars.

You should consult a dermatologist who will take into account your age, overall health and medical history. He will also discuss with you your tolerance for specific medications, procedures or therapies and even budget. He will then be able to recommend some options taking into consideration your opinion or preference.

There are many types of treatment for acne scars which include inexpensive non-surgical and the considerably more costly surgical procedures. Depending on the condition of the scars, you may want to try non-surgical treatment first before seeking more drastic treatment such as laser treatment.

Acne Scar Creams and Lotions - Acne scar treatment products contain skin renewal activators and biological enzymes that gently dissolve or "digest" the damaged or worn out cells.

Laser Treatment - Laser treatment uses a high-energy light beam to remove layers of damaged skin. This form of treatment is expensive and multiple treatments are often required.

Dermabrasion - An abrasive instrument similar to an electric sander is used to resurface the skin by removing the top layer.

Microdermabrasion - Microdermabrasion removes only the very surface cells of the skin by using aluminium oxide crystals passing through a vacuum tube to remove surface skin.

Collagen injections - A type of collagen derived from the purified bovine collagen is injected beneath the skin to replace the natural collagen of the body lost in the acne condition.

Autologous Fat Transfer (AFT) - Fat is taken from another part of your own body and injected in the acne scar skin to fill the holes left by acne scars.

Steroid Injections - In this acne scar treatment surgery, elevated scars (keloids) are flattened by injecting small doses of steroids into the keloids.

Chemical Peels - A special chemical is applied on the top of the skin and left there for several minutes after which it will be removed together with the top layer of skin.

Punch Grafts - Small portions of skin are taken from one part of your body and implanted into the deep-seated scars.

Home Made Remedies - Advocates of natural home made acne scar treatment recommend various remedies such as applying a clove of raw garlic or mint juice, and a variety of natural oils on acne scars.

While many of these acne scar treatments have reported success for many individuals, for others, it is likely that a combination of these various forms of acne scar treatment may be required to be tested.

Also, acne scar sufferers must manage their expectations of success. Non of these treatments offer overnight success in getting rid of acne scars. Time is an important factor in the healing and tissue remodelling process where visible results will be apparent only after a considerable period of time.

People whose investment horizons are limited to the likes of stocks, real estate or gold may not give a second thought to amulets, but in Thailand it's a flourishing trade with an estimated market value of 10 billion Baht.

Collecting amulets and other sacred items is a centuries-old tradition, some of it founded on Buddhist religious beliefs, some of it linked to superstitions. In the past it was a low-profile activity but in recent years it's become very mainstream.

Watcharapong Radomsittipat, a well-known amulet expert, says the trade is being fuelled by widespread media coverage _ radio, television, magazines and, more recently, websites that make news and information easily accessible to the general public and seasoned collectors.

There's no denying, he adds, that the general unease in the country at the moment has people looking for hope in places they hadn't looked before.

"The lack of happiness and confidence of people in society is a key factor driving them search for something divine, which they believe they can always depend on as it can take away their fear," says Mr Watcharapong, who owns an amulet booth at the New World amulet center. He is also an owner of a magazine two websites.

According to Mr Watcharapong, there are now 20 to 30 websites that offer amulet information and e-auction or e-market services. His own two websites handle about 10 million baht worth of e-auction transactions per month, with as many as 100,000 items up for bid.

The amulet boom has spread into related businesses including coin manufacturing, amulet frame and container making and other fields. That's good for the economy because it creates jobs, says Mr Watcharapong.

But he cautions that it should not get too commercialised. Collectors who really care about amulets should remember what attracted them in the first place, which is their spiritual value and the peace of mind amulets bring. "Things could get dangerous if people do it only for investment or speculative purposes."Mr Watcharapong compares the concept of investing in amulets with an investment in stocks _ a fundamental approach is safe while price volatility is often the result of rumours or even manipulation by unscrupulous traders.

"The price in the market should reflect the true fundamentals of the sacred items. But if the price surges too high and too quickly, then it is probably be something like stock price manipulation."

Yet, unlike stocks, there is no hard and fast rule to determine the price of amulets. There are no any mathematical approaches to determine future or target prices of amulets, which can often be totally unpredictable.

There are a number of cases, Mr Watcharapong says, in which prices have gone up by 1,000% or higher within just a year or a few years. "I once bought a Jatukarm-Ramathep (a well-known amulet) in 1995 at only 49 baht. Now, 12 years later, the price has gone up to over one million baht," he says.

"However, many of my friends used to buy some amulets at prices that were too high, and then the prices took a nosedive after only a short while."

One well-known collection, Benjapakee, used to command prices of five million baht or more but they fell by half during the economic crisis, he recounts.

Generally, older amulets are more costly than new issues. The most popular item among collectors today is Jatukarm-Ramathep, named for two great warrior kings of the Srivijaya Kingdom.

The amulets were created more than 20 years ago but they have lately attracted huge amounts of media attention for miracles claimed by their holders. The tales have fired the imaginations of the general public and celebrities alike.

"It's a simple rule of demand and supply," Mr Watcharapong says. "And the media play a big role in driving the demand in the market."

Other factors affecting prices include the model, scarcity, beauty, condition, the ritual ceremonies performed to make an amulet sacred, and the popularity of the temples where the rituals are held.

"The ritual done to bless the items must be done by highly revered monks who are admired by a majority of Buddhist adherents. The more venerable and well-known the monks are, the higher the demand will be in the market. Likewise, the more well-known the temples are, the more popular the amulets will be."

For the novice collector, however, it may take time to get a fix on what acceptable par value prices are for amulets.

One more caution is that there are a large number of counterfeit items in the market _ few amateur collectors can tell the difference. Charoen Prachuabchai, a 33-year-old grocery seller who has been an amulet enthusiast for the past six years, says that, like many beginners, he learned his lessons the hard way _ buying amulets at higher prices only to find out later that they were fake.

"That was only a loss of several thousand baht. Yet, I learned my lesson that I needed more time to study and get to know them better," Mr Charoen says.

Today he has more than 50 amulets on his shelves at home, most of them the well-known Jatukarm-Ramathep models. One of them, acquired in 2004 for 300 baht, is worth more than 20,000 baht in the market now.

Mr Charoen says that the materials used to create amulets are also very important price determinants. The more special the material, the higher the price. For instance, some amulets are made of soil from holy lands, 108 types of filaments or bear's canine teeth _ all can be set at high prices. Of course, the fewer copies there are of any item, the better the chances of price appreciation.

In the end, though, Mr Charoen says it's not about money. The essence of amulets should be to help people calm their hearts and minds during times of trouble _ " a guiding light in a tunnel," he says with a smile.

Yes! Back links are still one of the most coveted items for webmasters who are into SEO and there are good reasons for it. Besides Google's urdent effort to crush down on link sales, buying links is often not a feasible option for small webmasters.Under such situation most webmasters would often resort to link exchange or spamming blog and guest books. But they are to no good ! So what other ways can a website get back links and that too for free?

There are actually more than one ways to get good quality free back links to your website.

    a) Directory Submission : Submit your website to good quality directories. There are plenty of directories that are free yet useful. Try to make a list of them and submit to them in accordance to their T & C. Most directories would approve your listin if you follow their guidelines properly and you end up with a bunch of good free backlinks. To check for a good quality directory, remeber the following:

A good directory would never ask for a link back

Try to find how old the directory is -- the older the better

Check the number of sites already submitted - the more the number of sites the better it is

Check if the site links to websites that are potetial bad neighborhoods.

    b) Blog & Social Media: Create a blog of your own. Believe me it is far better than spamming other's blogs :D In almost all SEO related websites it i preached that content is the key to success because search engines love content and good contents gain links. What better way would you have to present your good content to potential linkers than postin it in your blog? It is important that you create a blog as a part of your domain, ie, if your domain is http://www.example.com/, you can have a blog as http://www.example.com/blog . This helps to transfer the power of the free back links that you get in your blog to the main domain also.

Create good content on your blog and submit them to the social media websites like Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit etc. If your content is really good, you are sure to get a host of Free back links. ( this reminds me, probably I should make my next post on what is "Good content").

c)RSS Feeds: Generate a RSS feed and submit it to the RSS directories. On the Internet people are hungry for content, there might be a bunch of people waiting to put your RSS on their website and thus provide you with a bunch of free backlinks.

    d) Submitting articles in an articles directory is very important for your online business. It gives you free targeted traffic as your authors bio is also attached with the article which contains the back links to your websites, when visitors read articles then they also visit your site and here they can be your free customer of the products you are selling. This also gives you the free backlinks, as search engines gives importance to these backlinks to any site and this contributes making your site's rank increase and making it important for search engines.

    e) Press Release: We all know what press releases are meant for but an advantage that we should not overlook is that a press release would always contain a link back to the website. So a well circulated press release is equals to a bunch of Free back links.

    f) Website Review: There are various websites and forums that conducts review of website/product/services. Submit your website to these and with each review you are sure to get atleast one free back link. ( Drawback: if your product/service quality is bad you might get some negative review which in turn can affect your business)

g)Freebies: For those webmasters who can afford or are technically very strong; offer free widgets, templates and other freebies that people can use on their website and blogs and ask them for a link in return. Most of them would happily link back to your website for a good free wordpress template or a fancy widget.

If you want to take a trip to Eastern Europe, then the best place for you to go to is Ukraine. Whereas Russia is the biggest in terms of the land area, Ukraine is, on the other hand, the richest in terms of what it has to offer. Ukraine is the second largest country in Eastern Europe, and its cultural heritage is probably the best it can offer to you as a foreign visitor.

    1.) Libraries

You will find an extensive list of libraries in Ukraine dedicated to a variety of concentrations. For one, there is Ukrainian Academy of Science, the biggest in the country, so be sure to visit this library if you want to get to know more about the culture of Ukrainians. There are many other libraries in Ukraine, ranging from topics of religion, politics and works of fiction.

    2. Historical Museums

The rich history of Ukraine has spawned a lot of museums. One notable museum is the Historical Museum of Ukraine where you can get a glimpse of Ukraine's history just by a tour of the museum. Other famous museums include the Museum of Historical Treasures and Museum of Ukrainian Art.

    3.) Churches

Another good thing about Ukraine is its magnificent and beautiful churches. These churches are inspired by different architectural styles. Two world-famous churches are in here – the Church of Saint Andrew and Cathedral of Saint George, both of which are found in Kyiv.

    4.) The City Capital, Kyiv

The most interesting city you must visit if you are in Ukraine is the country's capital – Kyiv. Because most of the structures and buildings in the area were destructed during the World War II, a vast regeneration of the place was done throughout the past, recent years. Thus, Kyiv will come off as a very modern place probably similar to your hometown.

    5.) Waters in Ukraine

A lot of bodies of water can be found in Ukraine. The most abundant of which are rivers. In Ukraine are found some of the largest river bodies in Europe, and this will prove to be a great experience if you are looking for a bonding experience with your family.

    6.) Natural Reserves and Wildlife

Another thing Ukraine is proud of is its natural reserves and wildlife refugees. Ukraine is home to a number of endangered species, which is why it has taken the important move to protect its wildlife. You ought to visit the zoos and reserves in the place to get a glimpse of animals you can only see in this country.

    7.) Literature

You should never leave Ukraine without having a taste of their native literature. The thing about Ukraine's literature is that it manifests directly the history of the country. Its literary topics include poems, Christian verses, and political novels and books dealing with social realism. You should read or buy a book in Ukraine while you're at it.

    8.) Theaters

Ukrainian culture has procreated a lot of original works in the arts and letters. In theater, the same can be said for no less. The theaters in Ukraine hold concerts and ballet performances which have been deemed as world class by critics and fans alike.

    9.) Art Exhibits

Again another proof of the rich cultural ancestry of Ukraine is its exhibits. These exhibits showcase the works of their artists for over hundreds of years ago. Usually, the themes are either secular or non-secular, which makes it perfectly enjoyable for you, whether or not you are a religious person.

    10.) Christian Places

Many places in Ukraine are known for its being religious in nature. Usually, this religion has something to do with Christianity. The peacefulness of the place also allows for you to be in perfect reverie, as the country is not often visited by tourists.

There has developed a new craze in Britain in recent years. You can see it wherever you go; people walking or even riding bicycles, carrying a cardboard carton of the stuff. Yes, you guessed it, it's the coffee craze. The coffee experience has taken over from the can of cola and the coffee vocabulary litters our speach.

In America coffee drinking became particularly popular with the birth of a well known chain of coffee shops. In the cafés of Europe, particularly Italy, Spain and France, strong coffee has been the beverage of choice for centuries.

Drinking coffee has become so addictive that people will even queue up to be served their favorite variation, be it latte, espresso, mocha or a plain americano. One chain of coffee shops sells at least forty different blends of coffee from all over the world. There are blends from Latin America, Africa, Arabia, Asia and even Europe, as well as mixed blends and decaffeinated versions.

Coffee shops and cafés have popped up everywhere, in cities, towns and villages across the country. This phenomenon seems to have been caused by the desire of the youngsters of today to have a place to meet friends and do business as well as shoppers seeking refuge for their sore feet. Indeed coffee shops seem to be taking the place of the pub for many people.

Some business people even set up their offices in coffee shops; with the advent of wireless connections for their laptop computers and the ever present mobile 'phone, nobody actually needs to actually be in their office in order to work. This situation is ideal for informal business meetings as the atmosphere is much more relaxed than it would be at their place of work.

The coffee experience has now become such an important part of life so café owners need to look to their laurels if they are to survive. Customers are becoming far more selective when it comes to choosing the venue for their coffee drinking and the choice of products has a bearing too. With all the competition, only the coffee shops which provide the most comfortable atmosphere and best variety of coffees, well made, together with accompaniments such as pastries, cakes and biscuits will attract the most custom.

Customers expect not only different blends and origins of coffee these days but different flavors too such as cinnamon, hazelnut, nutmeg and chocolate. Not only must the coffee be well made and flavorsome but a wide choice of additives needs to be available. Gone are the days when white sugar would do; now there must be brown sugar, sugar crystals, honey and low calorie alternatives. The whiteners may include whole, semi-skimmed and skimmed milk, pouring cream, whipped cream and low fat powdered creamer. People aren't just looking for a drink but a whole experience when they go for a cup of coffee.

Consumers are even tiring of the more traditional ways of making coffee and are demanding that it be blended with cola, jam or spices usually associated with making curry. There are almost no lengths to which the coffee fanatic will not go to enhance the coffee experience.

How true is the saying "no pain, no gain"? Very true indeed, if you're Prapas Tonpibulsak.

The chief investment officer of Ayudhya Fund Management says he learned his fair share at the schools he attended, but none offered him the sorts of lessons _ not all of them pleasant _ that the Stock Exchange of Thailand has given him.

As a teenager in Chumphon, the Southern Province in Thailand, he was like many of his peers, with limited awareness of events happening around him. Even when he first arrived in Bangkok to study finance and banking at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, he found life fairly convenient; his goals were indeterminate.

That soon changed. As a senior student, he started to become curious about what he'd been reading about the stock market. He started to get ideas. Just two weeks before the 1987 Black Monday, he borrowed his parents' money and put it all in the stock market. The outcome: he kissed all the money goodbye.

"Well, if you ask how much money I lost back then, I would say the value equal to four Mercedes-Benzes, guidemoney.info/Mercedes-Benzes.htm " he says with a grin.

Though the experience was unbearably painful for a 20-year-old, in retrospect he says it was a priceless lesson.

"I suddenly realised how volatile and unstable the stock market was. And how much and how deeply one needs to study it to eliminate _ or at least manage the risks. That's the hardest thing one has to do," says Mr Prapas, now 40.

The personal crisis strengthened his resolve to recover his losses. This later led him to the new, and real, world of investment. He started to read everything in the field, and he found a hero in author Benjamin Graham.

After completing a bachelor's degree, he pursued an MBA, http://guidemoney.info/MBA.htm , in finance from Wagner College in New York, where he spent most of his days in classes, his nights watching financial and investment news on television, and his weekends at Barnes & Noble bookstores looking for securities analysis books. Before long, he had a clear goal in mind.

"I'd like to be financially independent at the age of 60 with 200 million Baht, approximately 5 millions US Dollar, in savings," he says hesitantly, and then he smiles.

Returning to Thailand, he started as a stock analyst at Securities One for two years and another two years at One Asset Management as a fund manager.

Following the 1997 crisis, he headed home to help solve problems facing his family's business. A few years later, he was back in Bangkok as a financial consultant specialising in debt restructuring at several key companies before stepping into Ayudhya Fund Management.

Asked about a view on personal finance, he says, "It's something that's related to commitment and responsibilities in life, which change through an individual's life cycle. It's a matter of setting goals and setting an action plan to get there. It's the same thing as doing business."

Hence, his goals have changed in relation to the changes in his life. Today, his ambition to be financially independent must also include the needs of his wife and three children.

For those setting a goal for savings after a retirement, he advises working back from the future to today, by taking monthly or yearly expenses, inflation and interest rates, into account.

"They need to do the mathematics to find out how much they need to save each month or invest in order to get the amount or returns they wish to have when they retire."

Currently, 10% of his investment portfolio is in equity and fixed-income funds including long-term equity and retirement mutual funds, while the majority of 80% to 90% is in real estate.

To accomplish his goal, his portfolio needs to generate a return of at least 12% a year.

"The key, and the most important thing, is that investors need to be able to know what the risks are and manage them well," he concludes.

Next to food, cat litter boxes are about the most important thing to your indoor cat. Cats are fastidious creatures which like to have somewhere clean and fresh to do their toilet. They need plenty of room to move without treading on something they did previously.

There are plenty of cat litter boxes available on the market from a plain tray to the fully automated variety.

When you're choosing your litter box, be sure to get one that's large enough for your cat or if it's currently a kitten, one that will be large enough when it's fully grown. The box should be at least four inches deep or the litter will go everywhere.

Litter boxes are important to cats and are considered to be the next in importance to their food. Like people who love their toilets clean, cats don't really love messy and smelly litter boxes. They want some place where they can move around and do their stuff. Litter boxes are available on the market and come in different size and shapes.

    Types of cat litter boxes:

    1. The tray. This one you will need to clean yourself at least once a day but you can make it easier by lining it with a newspaper before putting in the litter. That way you can just fold up the paper and soiled litter and put it straight into a plastic bag for disposal. If you're lucky, you won't even need to wash the litter tray.

    2. Hooded tray. This one is as above but with a hood or lid for the tray. This gives the cat some privacy but can also prevent the cat from kicking litter all over the floor.

    3. Hooded tray with filter and door flap. Both these additions help to contain the smell but don't imagine that you don't need to clean this one as often - you do!

    4. Automatic litter tray. These vary but there is one type which you roll first one way which tips the used litter into a removable tray, then another way which returns the unused litter to the tray.

    5. Fully automatic litter tray. These are quite clever beasts and are great for people who don't like cleaning litter boxes. Once the cat has finished its business and leaves the tray, an air filter switches on. Ten minutes later, a robotic rake sweeps away the by then clumped litter into a waste tray which it opens then seals on its way back. The waste tray only needs emptying about once a week. To use this properly, you will need good quality clumping litter and a handy mains power outlet.

Automatic cat litter boxes really are the best option both for the cat and for their owner. They are far more hygienic than normal litter trays; the human doesn't have to touch the waste and the cat doesn't have to come into contact with it either. This is particularly good for cats which are prone to cystitis or other infections.

Of all the continents and places in the world, Australia s perhaps the most unique, unique in the sense that its flora and fauna has evolved separately from the rest of the world over millions of years. Because of this, Australia is a haven for those people looking for something different in their travels. Not only that, Australia also offers much in natural wonders, local cuisine and culture, so here are 10 places you must visit in Australia:

    1.) Sydney

Sydney offers much in the way of cultural tourist attractions and much more. Here you can go to the Famous Opera House and be amazed at the collection of marine animals at the marine aquarium at Darling Harbor. You can also take in the city view from Sydney tower and more.

    2.) The Pinnacles

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

If you're reading this you may be looking for work for stay at home mothers. You obviously want to earn some money and you have time during the day when you're able to work but you do need to be flexible. If this sounds like how you're thinking then read on.

Paid surveys are ideal work for stay at home mothers. They're not difficult to do and can be quite a bit of fun. The work schedule is entirely up to you; just fit in a survey when the kids are at school or while you're waiting for the dinner to be ready. If you have a laptop you can watch television with the family while you do a survey or two.

However, before you start, here are the answers to some questions that you're bound to ask.

1.Is this suitable work for stay at home mothers? Emphatically, yes. Millions of legitimate companies use the opinions gathered from online surveys to help them with their marketing operation. Basically, surveys are market research, you are helping them with that and they will pay you. You work when you like and you work from home - ideal.

2.How much money can I earn? This depends on the amount of work that you're prepared to do. The more you do, the more you earn. Some companies pay better than others and there are experts online who can find you the best paying surveys to complete because they know what's hot in the marketplace. The best thing to do is to subscribe to a paid survey database.

3.What if it's a scam? Once again paying a small amount to subscribe to a paid survey database is a good idea. One of these will only deal with legitimate companies and any that appear to be dodgy will soon be removed from the database. The key here is to trust the experts and don't try and go it alone by searching the internet. Your time is precious, use it wisely.

4.How often will I be paid and how? This will vary depending on the survey database that you join but they will administer your pay, not the companies for whom you're taking the surveys. Typically you could be paid any time from once a week to once a month. Some companies stick to good old fashioned cheques while others are more progressive and use bank transfers or better still, Paypal. If the payment method is important to you, check it out before you join.

5.Why do I have to pay a fee to join a paid survey database? Well firstly, they need to know that you are serious about earning money doing surveys. After all, anyone can join a database they don't have to pay for; the small subscription weeds out the time wasters. Usually, the quality of a database will be increased if they call for a fee and they often attract high paying companies. Don't worry, you'll soon earn more than enough to cover the fee.

If paid surveys don't sound like your sort of thing, there's plenty of work for stay at home mothers out there. The internet is your oyster and you could even start your own business.

This country on the shores of the Baltic Sea lies on fertile plains covered by vast swathes of forest. Once part of the USSR, Latvia gained its independence on Aug. 21, 1991. The nation has one of the fastest-growing Gross Domestic Product ratings in Europe in recent memory. It is a very beautiful country, both in the urban and rural areas, and the city center of the capital, Riga, has been designated as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO for its unique examples of architecture.

    1.) Dome Cathedral

This old building was erected in 1211 after German Crusaders made the populace amenable to conversion to Christianity. It is the largest church in the Baltic region. Don't miss hearing the cathedral's organ with its nearly 7000 pipes, an amazing contraption, a national treasure of international standing.

    2.) St. John's Church

Located in Riga, this church was built in the fourteenth century. It is made up of a mix of Gothic architecture and Romanesque style. This church is also one of the notable buildings in a city full of interesting architecture.

    3.) Holy Trinity Church

Speaking of churches and organs, this one is located in Liepaja, Latvia's third-largest city and an important port. Hear Mass here and listen to the world's biggest unreconstructed pipe organ play, with its 7,000 pipes and 141 stops. This is a great counterpoint to another Liepaja attraction.

    4.) Karosta

Ever wondered what life on the other side of the Iron Curtain was like? Latvia was one of the bastions of Soviet defense against the American empire, and former bases like Karosta give one an opportunity to see what being a defender of the USSR was like. Among the things to see at Karosta are the Officer's Palace, the Old Prison, the breakwater and its fortifications.

    5.) Liepaja

This Baltic port remains relatively ice-free during the winter. Tourists can dine and hang out at the numerous eating establishments at the city center, then go for a stroll at Seaside Park. The town also offers a beach that is boasted as having the whitest sand in the Baltics.

    6.) Casinos

If you're struck by a gambling mood while in-country, you'd better be in Riga. There, the Olympic Voodoo Casino can help address your needs. It's the biggest casino in the whole of Latvia.

    7.) Hunting

The prevalence of unspoiled countryside means that there is a lot of game to be had in Latvia. Deer, boar, moose, beaver, lynx, and wildfowl are some of the animals available for hunting. The SFS (State Forest Service) is the major authority administering hunting laws, so be sure to coordinate with them if you plan on going hunting. Be aware that Latvia also conforms to EU hunting laws.

    8.) Freedom Monument

In the center of Riga stands the 42-meter-tall statue of a woman with her arms raised, holding aloft three stars. This is the Freedom Monument, which, among other things, is a symbol of Latvian freedom and commemorates those who were deported to the gulags during Soviet times. Locally, the statue is known by the name Milda.

    9.) Sigulda

This old town is located on the Gauja River. Tourists can ply the waters during the summer and ski during the winter season. Among the local attractions are Turaida Castle and museum as well as some local caves.

    10.) Jurmala

Fifteen minutes away by railway travel, this resort town stretches along the Gulf of Riga near the Lielupe River. It is a perfect destination for those who want forests, sandy beaches, and bright sunshine. Drivers to Jurmala need to buy a special ticket to enter here.

    8.) A Calm Interlude

In the midst of all the hustle bustle of your visit to the tropics, why not take some time to relax and have a nice peaceful walk through Welchman Hall Gully, a path that's flanked by beautiful flowers, vegetation, and spice trees. If you're lucky, you might spot a monkey or two. It's also a good place for bird watching.

    10.) A Pirate's Haven

Strategies to bring sleek content from Hollywood movie producers and the highly-regarded Sundance Film Festival were presented alongside projects to make it easier for poor migrant workers to transfer money at last week's 3GSM World Congress, the largest event for the mobile telecommunications industry with an estimated 55,000 visitors this year.

While the two initiatives may seem largely incompatible, it's a reflection of where the mobile sector is today: On the one hand there are many markets approaching saturation, where competition has seen the price of a call plummet and forced operators to look at new sources of revenue _ such as mobile entertainment. At the other extreme are the so-called "emerging markets," where mobile phone penetration can be as low as a single-digit percentage of the population and where average earnings mean that the price of a phone and the accompanying service charges are seen as luxury items.

Somewhere in the middle is Thailand, with a fairly healthy mobile penetration rate hovering around 50 percent and healthy competition to match. Where the country falls down is the lack of the faster "third generation (3G)", http://www.mobilephoneportal.info/3g.htm , networks that are enabling new data services in many other places, including neighbouring Asian countries _ and a lack of any clear timetable to license 3G services.

And with new technologies being introduced that are starting to bring mobile connection speeds to the Internet equal to that from fixed connections such as a DSL, Thailand could risk falling further behind.

For example, in a video presentation Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo told congress delegates that it was already testing data access cards that offer Internet connections of 7.2Mbps, with plans to boost its "Next G" network to 14Mbps speeds. That's a great deal faster than most companies can get from their regular fixed broadband connection here in Thailand, and about 50 times faster than dial-up connections or the data connections available through Thai mobile operators.

Telstra is using a technology called HSPA (high-speed packet access)http://www.mobilephoneportal.info/hspa.htm , which is an "add-on" to existing 3G networks and currently being deployed by many operators around the world. According to the GSM Association, there are now 149 HSPA networks in use or in trial in 69 countries.

"It's a marriage of 3G with HSPA, what we call mobile broadband, and that's where the opportunity is," said Rob Conway, CEO of the GSM Association.

Development won't stop there, however, and many vendors were openly talking about a new technology called "LTE" (for long-term evolution) that is expected to offer peak download speeds of up to 100Mbps _ although it will be up to five years before such networks and phones are widely available.

    Monetizing the mobile

Mobile entertainment is not the only bet the industry has on the table, either, as plans were unveiled to marry the mobile phone with the finance and advertising sectors.

The "marriage" with the finance sector would make it easier for overseas workers from developing countries to transmit money, according to Conway, who detailed plans in a keynote speech for a trial project with MasterCard that aims to tap into the estimated $230 billion revenue generated from international remittances.

Conway said the challenge would be to "use mobile to connect the 'unbanked' and the 'underbanked' around the world," noting that to send 50 pounds from England to India can cost 12 pounds using the traditional banking system. "Mobile remittances also resonates with governments, as you can create transparency," he said, adding that for operators it can reduce churn, the industry term for when users transfer to rival operators.

Conway said the programme will complement existing local remittance channels and make transferring money internationally significantly more affordable.

Nineteen mobile operators representing more than 600 million users are participating in its programme, while the pilot project is being conducted in association with mobile operators in India and the Philippines.

In another mobile-finance initiative announced last week, the association detailed plans to use a new technology called Near Field Communications (NFC) to link mobile devices with payment systems. The Pay-Buy Mobile scheme would make use of embedded technology in the SIM card for credit and debits, and already has 14 operators signed up to take part.

While many mobile payment schemes have been proposed over the years, Conway believed this one would succeed as it is the "first truly global approach" and would leverage existing technologies being introduced by the major credit card companies.

A trial will be done in Korea later this year, led by mobile operator KTF and including all key participants such as banks and credit card providers, retail outlets and handset manufacturers.

    Get ready for ads

Also on the horizon, according to many in the industry, is mobile advertising. While that's not necessarily the mobile content that the average consumer was looking for, it will most likely come on an "opt-in" basis, according to Conway.

As well as overcoming potential user resistance, he said that a key requirement for mobile advertising would be standardisation and a code of conduct for the industry. As a result, the association recently set up a Mobile Advertising Forum that would address such issues.

If operators can agree on things such as common formats for mobile ads, there is a lot of potential, according to Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin. "We are clearly in a good environment to monetize what we can get from advertisers," Sarin told delegates, although he also warned that the industry needs to work together. "We need to seize the moment and if we don't we'll have a fragmented media and a fragmented user base," he said.

Another company that sees potential in mobile advertising is Yahoo, which last week launched its mobile display advertising platform on the Yahoo! Mobile Web service (http://m.yahoo.com) in 19 countries _ including here in Thailand. The advertisements will run near the top of the Yahoo mobile homepage and will allow users to directly call the advertiser or access more information.

Initial advertisers that have been signed up include Hilton's Embassy Suites, Infiniti, Intel, Nissan, Pepsi, Procter & Gamble Asia Pacific and Singapore Airlines.

However, mobile advertising platforms from major Internet players such as Yahoo and rival Google also have the potential to by-pass the operator, cautioned analyst firm Analysys, which said that mobile carriers needed to use their detailed customer databases to gain a significant share of advertising revenues.

"If this information is used intelligently, mobile operators have an opportunity to gain significant new revenues from mobile advertisers, who may be willing to pay a premium for access to a well-segmented audience," said Analysys consultant Andrew Kloeden.

"Provided a business model that does not bypass the operators' networks emerges as dominant, mobile advertising may represent a source of significant ARPU [revenue] gains from mobile data services," he added.

    Pull down the walls

While faster speeds for accessing mobile data and high-profile entertainment options _ such as mobile music and more lately mobile TV _ are what the industry likes to emphasise, the reality is that mobile data is still dominated by a relatively primitive service _ the humble SMS text message. That's the case whether the user is in the SMS-leading Philippines or in the UK, which boasts the largest share of data revenues in Western Europe, according to research firm Informa.

One reason for the slow take-up of "richer" content offerings is because mobile operators in the past have tried to sell their own content and rope off the wider Internet, according to many industry observers. This so-called "walled garden" approach might have to change to get the average user interested in mobile data offerings.

"There is only one Internet and I think we misunderstood that as an industry," said Simon Beresford-Wylie, CEO-designate of the soon-to-be-merged Nokia Siemens Networks. "Services and content [in the future] will come predominantly from the Internet and we have to understand that," he explained, adding that "we're moving from a world where there was a telecom rhythm to one that has an Internet rhythm."

Michiel Verhoeven, general manager of Microsoft's Asia Pacific Communications Sector business, says that the walled garden approach is changing and notes that user-generated content will also come to the mobile world in the same way that it has been a major disruptor on the Internet.

"It's about building communities and the ability to create communities drives revenues," said Verhoeven, who believes that rather than a "killer app" for the mobile Internet, operators should look for a "critical mass" of applications that they can offer.

"A lot of operators have had a 'build it and do-it-yourself' mentality, but today you have to collaborate and partner more than any time in the past," he said, adding that content re-use across different platforms such as mobile phones, the web and IP-TV should become standard practice.

In December Microsoft launched its Connected Services "Sandbox", an environment that allows software vendors, developers, system integrators, network equipment providers and service providers to leverage a pool of content and services. Applications created can either be hosted by operator partners or directly by Microsoft.

"It's a new way of service aggregation but it can only work with a critical mass of services. Many fail, so you don't want huge investments in any one service," Verhoeven explained, adding that Thai mobile operators could also share from the Microsoft sandbox.

At last week's event Microsoft and BT announced a competition around the Connected Services Sandbox with prizes up to US$25,000. The aim is to develop services that merge traditional telecommunications offerings such as voice or text messaging with Web 2.0 applications such as mapping or search. According to Microsoft, developers will be given the task of creating managed network mash-ups that address the specific service requirements of multiple usage scenarios.

    The fourth screen

Despite the fact that it will be more likely proven services such as email and messaging that will build on the existing SMS-dominated revenues in the mobile world, it's things like Mobile TV and films made for the so-called "fourth screen" that dominate industry events like last week's Mobile World Congress.

Rather than Hollywood, it was India's "Bollywood" and the independently-minded Sundance Film Festival that provided the fare in Barcelona. Premiering from Bollywood were two short films, Zahir and Matriomony _ part of the feature film Dus Kahaniyaan (10 Stories) produced by Sanjay Gupta of White Feather Films and starring more than 20 leading Bollywood stars. The films will be available through content provider Hungama Mobile.

Meanwhile the Sundance Institute introduced five "made for mobile" short films commissioned as part of the Sundance Film Festival Global Short Film Project. The five mobile films are now available for mobile users to download at http://www.sundance.org/globalshortfilms.

Unfortunately, downloading them here in Thailand could take a long time, given the lack of 3G services. Let's hope that situation changes soon so that we can take part in the mobile evolution that's occurring in the rest of the world. And not just for entertainment reasons, either.

According to a study by Deloitte released last week in Barcelona, usage of mobile communications can spur growth. In a developing country, the study found that an increase of 10 percentage points in mobile penetration will lift the country's annual economic growth rate by 1.2 percentage points. What are we waiting for?

Barcelona, Spain _ The future Nokia Siemens Networks last week unveiled its branding and logo and held its first combined media event in a signal that the latest merger in the telecom world is on track for its close in the first quarter.

The merger of the network divisions of Nokia and Siemens follows the tie-ups between major vendors Alcatel and Lucent as well as Ericsson and Marconi.

Nokia Siemens CEO-designate, Simon Beresford-Wylie, announced at the 3GSM World Congress here in Barcelona that the future company was "day one ready" and noted that its combined product portfolio was being shown to customers for the first time last week.

He claimed the new entity was aiming to save 1.5 billion euros by 2010 though operational synergies, 40 percent of which would be realised from combined R&D. Other areas where costs can be shaved include procurement, a rationalisation of sales and marketing functions, consolidated IT systems and real estate.

He spoke of a strategy that would focus on opportunities in mobility and broadband, but which wouldn't be shackled by any particular technology "religion".

"We need to lose the religion," he said, noting that the future company would have a portfolio that encompassed a wide range of wireless technologies including GSM, CDMA and WiMAX.

Open standards would be crucial to its future product rollouts, he said, and he suggested that attempts to create a proprietary and closed mobile Internet in the past were misguided.

"There is only one Internet and I think we misunderstood that as an industry. Services and content [in the future] will come predominantly from the Internet and we have to understand that," Beresford-Wylie explained. "We're moving from a world where there was a telecom rhythm to one that has an Internet rhythm," he added.

The future CEO also outlined trends through till 2015, with the merged entity expecting the number of "connected" users to double to 5 billion. He expected more of these to be broadband-enabled, noting that today we're "still living in a world that is narrowband."

He also expected users in emerging markets to make the transition to broadband quicker thanks to new technologies such as WiMAX. "Broadband in the developing world won't take decades but will happen in the next few years," he suggested.

Commenting on the future company's new logo, Beresford-Wylie said that it was a reflection of "dynamism, movement and renewal." Like the telco world's other recent merger, Alcatel-Lucent, the logo of Nokia Siemens uses a wave shape and purple colour, in this case combined with yellow (Alcatel-Lucent is all purple).

However, the similarities end there, according to Beresford-Wylie, who suggested that the two companies' similar cultures and close proximity in Europe would make it a better fit than one corporation from Europe and another from the US.

In a separate interview with Database, Stephan Scholz, the designated head of Research, Technology and Platforms for Nokia Siemens Networks, said the new company would devote equal R&D resources to WiMAX as it does to traditional cellular technologies.

Scholz nominated access technologies as one of five broad areas that the new company would focus on when it commences operations. The other four areas for R&D focus were more efficient core networks, next-generation subscriber ID management, IMS for applications and OSS/BSS software for both mobile and fixed networks.

While more of a longer-term initiative, the creation of modular software for OSS/BSS functions was crucial and something that was needed on an industry-wide scale, according to Scholz, who nominated it as one of the first projects he would likely start as head of research.

He also spoke of his surprise at the extent of the current Nokia OSS/BSS platform for mobile networks, saying it was "much more than I was aware of." Scholz, who has been working in carrier development at Siemens, suggested that the platform could be adapted so that it can also be used for fixed and converged networks in future.

Other research focusses he proposed were for carrier Ethernet aggregation and a single database for subscriber information that would be common regardless of the application or service used.

The 50:50 joint venture is expected to have six business units when it commences operations: Radio Access, Service Core and Applications, Operation Support Systems, Broadband Access, IP/Transport and Services.
