Working as a physician requires a certain amount of drive and determination. Not only are you required to complete several years of formal education and hands-on training, but you must also work with fervor to diagnose and treat patients. Psychiatrists are no exception and certainly do require a great deal of determination, but they should exhibit other characteristics, too.
Before you embark on your journey toward becoming a psychiatrist, you may want to assess your own personality to make sure a career in this field of medicine is right for you. Psychiatrists should ideally possess the following skills and characteristics:
Listening – A good portion of a psychiatrist's day-to-day activities includes listening to patients. Whether a patient is expressing sorrow, elation, confusion, paranoia, or any other symptoms, it will be your job to interpret what he or she is saying so you can form an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the necessary medications.
Communication – The ability to communicate with your patients is equally as important as your ability to listen. You'll need to clearly and thoroughly explain your patients' diagnoses and provide easy-to-follow instructions regarding medications and other treatments. You'll likely also need to regularly communicate with pharmacists and other physicians.
Patience – Your patients won't always freely share their feelings or describe their symptoms. This can prove incredibly frustrating, especially if you need more information to diagnose and help a patient. Keeping your cool in situations like these is incredibly important. After all, your ultimate goal is to gain the confidence of your patient so he or she feels comfortable enough to describe their symptoms and express their feelings.
Attention to detail – Your job will often involve assessing a patient's mood and comparing it to his or her disposition at a previous visit. Sometimes even the slightest changes can indicate whether a medication is working properly. For this reason, you'll need to take very detailed notes so you can adequately track a patient's progress.
Thoroughness – Diagnosing certain mental disorders can prove challenging, time consuming, and frustrating. Many illnesses share near-identical symptoms, which can necessitate an incredibly thorough evaluation using a fine-toothed comb.
Empathy – As difficult as it may be, you'll sometimes need to put yourself in your patients' shoes. Understanding their struggles and frustrations can provide the motivation you'll need to put a little more work into diagnosing and treating your patients so they can receive the help they need.
Honesty – Telling a patient they have a certain mental disorder can be difficult. While you don't want to dance around the truth, you don't want to be too blunt, either. It may take some practice, but you'll eventually need to perfect the art of being delicately honest with your patients and their loved ones.
Keep in mind that these are just a few of the traits you'll need to possess as a psychiatrist. If you want to learn more about the characteristics needed for a career in psychiatry, consider consulting with a guidance counselor or psychiatrist.

Article Title: Why Traditional Back Surgery Might Not Be Your Only Option

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
In the past, advanced spinal conditions almost always meant extensive, open-back surgery. Often called "traditional back surgery", these procedures were used to treat everything from a ruptured disc to spinal stenosis.
Open-back surgeries are incredibly invasive and traumatic, cutting through the muscle tissue of the back to reach and oftentimes remove parts of the spine. Recovery times are known to take as long as a year, and a full recovery of the muscles in the back is highly improbable.
Luckily, outpatient surgical centers offer cutting-edge minimally invasive outpatient surgeries that can help set you on the path toward a healthy spine with a minimum of downtime.
How does it work?
Outpatient spinal surgery centers perform what are known as "endoscopic surgeries." Endoscopic surgeries are performed via a tiny camera and tube called an endoscope. A laser is attached to the endoscope to allow surgeons to remove troublesome parts of discs or spine.
The equipment allows professionals to reach the spine through a much smaller incision than traditional open back surgery. Whereas the open -back surgery incisions alone can take up to two weeks to heal, endoscopic spinal surgery is typically an outpatient procedure.
Use of an endoscope allows access to the spine without the need to cut through the muscles of the back, making the extensive physical therapy associated with open back surgery a thing of the past.
Conditions Treated Via Endoscopic Surgeries
These centers offer a number of different treatments for many spinal conditions including spinal stenosis, herniated or bulging discs and other spinal conditions. A few of the procedures available include:
• Endoscopic discectomy – a laser-assisted surgery that removes bulging or damaged portions of the spine's intervertebral discs.
• Foraminotomy- an endoscopic procedure that opens up the spinal canal to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and protruding nerve roots.
• Laminotomy- this procedure relieves the pressure on pinched nerve roots.
• And many more
The Treatment Process
The quest to end your debilitating back pain should always begin at one place, your primary care physician's office. Only your physician can accurately diagnose what is causing your back pain and set you on a course to fix it. Your physician should give you a regimen of conservative treatment options to try before recommending any surgery. A few conservative methods that have helped other back pain sufferers find relief are pain medicine, stretching, inversion boards, a change in lifestyle (eg cutting down on junk food, alcohol and tobacco use), and exercise geared toward strengthening your back and core muscles.
If after several months you are gaining no relief from your symptoms, surgery may be an option. Always research your choice of ambulatory endoscopic surgery center.
Spinal surgery is an important and personal step. Try to find one that believes in a "patient first" philosophy, potentially providing patients with a designated representative who will walk them through the entire process from initial consultation through recovery.
Try to find Experts
Give their web site an once-over. Look for accreditations from the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care.
Do they explain that all surgery should be used as a last resort after conservative methods have failed to provide relief? If the center you are researching is attempting to give you a hard sell on surgery, you should look elsewhere.
Check off-site reviews and customer satisfaction ratings. In the age of the internet, people are readily vocal about their experiences with any given business. If the center is poorly rated, try somewhere else.
However, if the endoscopic surgery center you are researching appears to be a trusted source of excellent patient care, do not hesitate to set up a consultation.

Many individuals who are suffering from back pain cringe at the thought of exercising. Even the simplest, everyday movements like standing up and bending over can seem like an impossible feat. However, many of those who are plagued with back pain can actually benefit from exercising.
From acute injuries like muscle strains to degenerative conditions like spinal arthritis, there are many causes of back pain. Depending on what has caused your discomfort (as well as various other factors), you may or may not benefit from exercising. Before you begin any exercise regimen, you should consult with your doctor. You may also want to ask your doctor if you're a candidate for physical therapy. Some patients prefer working with a physical therapist to exercising independently because it allows them to rest easy knowing they're targeting the correct muscle groups, and that they're performing all exercises properly and safely.
Types of Physical Therapy
What activities can you anticipate doing in physical therapy? Your sessions may entail active or passive therapies (or, as is often the case, a combination of both). Active therapies require your direct participation (they're "done by you") and can include stretching and strength-training exercises, while passive therapies are performed by the physical therapist (or, they're "done to you").
Active Physical Therapy
Common active therapies include:
Strength training – Probably the most common active therapy, strength training serves to stabilize the spine by making the neck, back, and abdomen stronger and better able to support the weight of the body.
Stretching/flexibility exercises – Gently stretching the muscles can help some patients relieve muscle tension to reduce pain. This type of active therapy commonly goes hand-in-hand with strength training.
Posture modification exercises – This type of active therapy can technically fall under the strength training and stretching categories of physical therapy. However, these exercises specifically serve to improve a patient's posture while sitting, standing, and even sleeping.
Passive Physical Therapy
Common passive therapies include:
Heat/ice therapy – This passive therapy involves the application of heat alternated with the application of ice. Applying heat to the affected area can relieve muscle tension, while a cold compress can reduce inflammation and numb pain.
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) – Another type of passive therapy, TENS involves the delivery of an electrical current to a specific nerve in the back. This is a noninvasive therapy (the current is sent through the skin), and causes no pain. Mild heat produced by the current can help relieve muscle tension.
Ultrasound therapy – Also a passive therapy, ultrasound therapy involves the transmission of ultrasound waves through the skin and into underlying tissues. The high-frequency sound waves produced during the ultrasound deliver heat deep into the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, relaxing muscle spasms and promoting healing.
Learning More About Physical Therapy for Back Pain
If you believe physical therapy could relieve your pain and discomfort, make an appointment with your primary care physician or spine specialist. If, despite suffering from chronic back pain, you haven't already been diagnosed with a spine condition, your physician may want to perform a CT scan or MRI to form a diagnosis before he or she recommends physical therapy.

Article Title: Has Technology Affected the Way Spine Surgery is Performed?

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
In the past, patients who required surgical treatment for some spine conditions faced a lengthy hospital stay and arduous rehabilitation. Thanks to advances in technology, some patients can undergo minimally invasive procedures that are performed on an outpatient basis, and often require only a few weeks of rehabilitation. These advances in technology have undoubtedly affected the way spine surgery is performed and has made pain-free living a more viable option for individuals who might otherwise have avoided surgery.
Open Neck or Back Surgery vs. a Minimally Invasive Procedure
An open neck or back surgery is typically performed through a large incision in the neck, back, throat, or abdomen. Muscles, ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissues are dissected to provide access to the spine. Depending on the spine condition being treated, an intervertebral disc (which is a pad-like structure that absorbs impact and provides cushioning to the vertebrae) may need to be removed in its entirety. The surgeon then fills the empty disc space with an intervertebral cage that is secured to the adjacent vertebrae with screws and other hardware. Bone graft material is inserted into the intervertebral cage, which can eventually fuse the adjacent vertebrae together and restore stability to the spine.
A minimally invasive procedure, on the other hand, is performed on an outpatient basis, through an incision that is only about an inch long. The surgeon inserts a series of tubes, each one slightly larger than the last, until he or she has adequate access to the patient's spine. This eliminates the need to dissect any musculature, allowing for a less painful and more expedient recovery. A series of surgical instruments are inserted through the tubes, which the surgeon uses to decompress a spinal nerve, nerve root, or the spinal cord itself. While an open neck or back surgery typically necessitates the complete removal of an intervertebral disc, the goal of a minimally invasive procedure is to remove only the portion of spinal anatomy that is causing neural compression.
What These Differences Mean for Patients
Patients who undergo minimally invasive procedures can have many advantages over those who undergo open neck or back surgeries. For one, minimally invasive procedures require less recovery time than open neck or back surgeries thanks to smaller incisions and the fact that no musculature is dissected. A smaller incision also makes for a slighter scar and a reduced chance of blood loss, infection, and other risk factors. Patients also face less risk for developing Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS), which is the worsening or continuation of symptoms following surgery.
State-of-the-art Technology Still Has Some Drawbacks
While the technology behind minimally invasive procedures has drastically changed the way some spine conditions are treated, in no way has it eliminated all of the risks associated with spine surgeries. Patients still face the possibility of infection, blood loss, and other risks, and they still require a certain amount of rehabilitation. Seeing how much technology has already changed the way spine surgery is performed, it's possible that future advances could eliminate even more of the drawbacks to undergoing an operation.

The importance of maintaining an excellent relationship with your doctor cannot be overstated. Only when you're completely comfortable with your doctor and fully trust his or her opinion will you feel completely at ease about the level of treatment that you are receiving. This is especially true when you consider the intimacy that exists between a person and their doctor. If you're embarrassed to discuss a medical problem that has been troubling you, for instance, you might not get the treatment you require. Or, worse, if you really do have an issue, wasting time putting off treatment can have dire consequences. No one is saying that you should be the best of friends with your doctor, but having a close relationship is something everyone should try to attain.
For starters, the best way to develop a relationship with your doctor is to visit consistently. Even if you aren't sick very often, it is always a good idea to receive an annual physical, if nothing else. When you are a repeat visitor to the same doctor, you naturally begin to develop a rapport. Visiting the same doctor consistently also cuts down on needless paperwork, confusion, and potential mistakes. If you've had the same doctor for years, he or she knows all about your prior conditions, your medical history, medications you've been prescribed and other details that can be essential in diagnosing an illness.
Another way to build a relationship with your doctor has to do with trust. In order to be completely confident in their abilities, you need to be able to feel like you are in good hands. One way to do this is to do your homework before you visit a doctor for the first time. If you're fighting the flu, you might not be eager to explore your options, but it can pay dividends in the long run if you need more advanced treatment later. Taking the time to learn where the doctor went to undergrad and medical school can give you important background information and speak to the quality and level of training that was received.
Experience should also not be immediately dismissed. There are plenty of talented young doctors out there, but no one will fault you for wanting to find a general practitioner who isn't right out of medical school. You should also explore the technology that your doctor uses. Are they up to date in the latest medical techniques and trends? No one will fault you for asking.
It can also be helpful to read reviews and talk to your neighbors to learn more about the doctor. Obviously, this anecdotal evidence should be taken at face value but if someone had a particularly bad or good experience, that information should be considered.
Above all else, be honest with your doctor. Have a back and forth. Ask questions and listen to answers. Take the time to like your doctor. It can make all the difference when you really need them. Going to the doctor doesn't always have to be a stressful experience and when you know you're in good hands it can help put you at ease.

One of the most important things that you will have to do when you decide to go ahead with any type of surgery is to find the right surgery center for your treatment. While historically, surgery was completed in a traditional hospital setting, a recent trend has been to conduct many procedures in offsite surgery centers. These centers are designed to provide the level of care that you require in a more comfortable environment than a sterile hospital. Yet, not all surgery centers are created equally, so what should you look out for when you're deciding where to go ahead with your treatment?
First and foremost, each surgery center is only as good as the doctors who work there. You might be wowed by the center itself, but if the doctors don't have the experience or expertise needed to provide you with the procedure you require, move along. Take the time to interview the surgeons who will be operating on you and make sure that you are completely comfortable with them both on a personal and professional level. If the doctor is cold and unfriendly, you might feel intimidated, or hesitate to ask questions and be engaged in the process, and this isn't a good thing. You don't have to be best friends with your doctor but you should be relaxed and at peace.
Next, you'll want to explore the various treatments that they offer. As technology continues to advance, many operations that used to require hospitalization, deep sedation, and lengthy recovery periods are now being done on an outpatient basis. The last thing you'd want to do is consent to a highly invasive surgery when you could get the same (or better) relief in a fraction of the time – with a fraction of the risk. When you visit the center, ask about the technology they employ and be prepared to ask about your procedure. It can be helpful to do some research before hand to know about various treatment options out there as well so you aren't pressured into an operation you don't need.
It's also important that you do your homework and research the facility. Ask friends and neighbors if they've heard anything about your surgical center – good or bad. You also are welcome to read reviews, but you should take these with a grain of salt because disgruntled former patients may skew results.
Finally, don't be ashamed to look at the extra amenities that the center may offer. Something like a luxurious recovery room or a well stocked cafeteria may be the thing that helps you make your decision when you're teetering between several options. Many surgical centers also offer comfortable waiting areas for your friends or family while they wait for you to be ready to go home, which is a nice touch.
Above all else, you should be extremely comfortable with everything about your procedure – from start to finish. Take the time to explore several surgical centers and find the one that is right for you. While you might be eager to get your procedure over and done with, in the long-run you'll be glad you took this time beforehand.

One of the unfortunate things about playing golf is that spine injuries can be quite common if you're not careful. In many ways, this shouldn't be entirely surprising when you consider the strain you put on your back and neck when you swing a golf club. Ultimately, you are rotating on an axis, twisting your shoulders, hips, and back, and then uncorking the pent up tension to explode through the golf ball. In other words, it isn't a natural movement. Plus, when you think about how many times you swing a club during the course of 18 holes of golf, the extent of the wear and tear can become more prevalent. So how can you reduce the likelihood of hurting your back and neck while playing a round of golf with your friends?
The first thing to understand is that back and neck pain can develop two ways from golfing. For starters, the most common reason that you might be experiencing discomfort in your spine after a round of golf is that you slightly injured yourself by pulling a muscle, straining a ligament, or tweaking something. This is entirely normal and something that just about everyone deals with from time to time in their lives. Generally speaking, treatment for a minor golf-related injury can be done at home and usually entails the use of over-the-counter painkillers or anti-inflammatories, the use of ice to reduce swelling or heat to promote healing, and taking it easy for a few days.
Alternatively, being a golfer can also contribute to the onset of a variety of degenerative spine conditions. Over the years, as we grow older, the anatomical elements that support the back and neck naturally begin to wear down. The intervertebral discs that cushion the spine deteriorate, the vertebral joints that connect adjacent vertebrae become arthritic, the spinal canal becomes constricted, and other forms of deterioration occur. The problem with being an active golfer is that the strain that the golf swing puts on the body – to say nothing of the burden of lifting and carrying a heavy golf bag – can accelerate this degeneration, potentially exacerbating problems. Furthermore, individuals who already struggle with a herniated disc, facet disease, or another degenerative spine condition may be dissuaded from golfing for similar reasons.
In order to help limit your back and neck pain after playing a round of golf, it is important that you exercise proper precaution both before and while golfing. For starters, stretch thoroughly before golfing, and if you start to feel tight while you're playing, take time out to loosen back up. Drink plenty of fluids, as well, to avoid dehydration. And above all else, don't overdo it. Odds are good you aren't trying to qualify for the PGA Tour so just have fun out there.
To learn more about how to practice good spine health and avoid problems stemming from your weekend golfing, speak with your doctor or a spine specialist in your area. You'll be glad that you did. Golfing can be great exercise and a fantastic release, but you don't want to put yourself in harm's way needlessly.

More often than not, neck surgery is considered a viable treatment option only when all possible conservative, nonsurgical treatments for a degenerative spine condition have been thoroughly exhausted. In most cases, individuals who suffer from chronic neck pain and other similar symptoms will find the relief they require with a carefully targeted regimen of techniques that are designed to improve strength and flexibility in the spine while managing the patient's pain. However, in order to determine the best course of action, it is always advised that the patient enlist the experience and expertise of a medical professional.
The specific neck surgery recommended to an individual will depend on a number of very important factors. For starters, what condition is to blame for the patient's pain? The presence of a herniated disc, for instance, might require that the herniated disc material be removed from the spinal column in order to decompress an irritated nerve root or the spinal cord. Likewise, a number of external factors will have an impact on what kind of approach is best for the individual. While the most common cause of chronic neck pain is deterioration related to the natural aging process, people of all ages and overall health can suffer from long lasting discomfort that requires medical attention. That said, a young athlete in otherwise good health may be a candidate for a different sort of approach that emphasizes strength training and stretching exercises that might not be as viable for an elderly patient who has difficulty getting around.
Regardless of the specific patient, however, it is important to understand that surgery is almost always considered the last resort, barring extenuating, emergency factors. Usually, over the course of several weeks or months, the symptoms stemming from a degenerative spine condition in the neck can be effectively treated with a combination of various treatments. For instance, while specific recommended methods will vary from patient to patient, the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, heat/cold therapy, low-impact exercises, stretching techniques, and other similar methods often prove effective. Many individuals also turn to epidural injections, or even rely on alternative medicines, such as acupuncture, holistic natural oils, and massage to complement their treatment.
In the event that neck surgery is recommended, it is up to the patient to make sure that they have explored all of their options before consenting to an operation. That's because depending on the patient's condition, there are several different types of procedures – with varying degrees of invasiveness – that might be able to deliver the results they require. Spinal fusion is the traditional option, wherein a segment of the spinal column is permanently immobilized by replacing the intervertebral disc with a bone graft and installing surgical hardware to stabilize the region. However, many individuals have also benefited from a minimally invasive alternative that takes advantage of state-of-the-art endoscopic technology that offer the same potential for pain relief without being nearly as invasive.
To determine what course of treatment is best for you and whether you need neck surgery, speak with your doctor or a spine specialist today and never be afraid to get a second opinion.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
What is Degenerative Disc Disease and What are its Symptoms?
Though you may have heard of the condition, you might still be wondering, "What is degenerative disc disease?" In short, it's a spinal condition that is caused by the deterioration of the intervertebral discs, which occurs gradually over time. Intervertebral discs are pad-like structures that are located between adjacent vertebrae in the neck and back. Discs essentially act as shock absorbers, providing cushioning to their adjoining vertebrae and aiding with the spine's movement and weight-bearing responsibilities. Over time, these rigorous tasks can eventually take their toll on the discs, causing them to slowly break down. Eventually, discs can weaken to the point that they become susceptible to herniating and bulging.
It is typically not until the point that an individual has developed a herniated or bulging disc that the symptoms of degenerative disc disease rear their ugly heads. That's because herniated and bulging discs sometimes cause a narrowing of the spinal canal, often leading to the compression of a spinal nerve, nerve root, or even the spinal cord itself. Numbness, muscle weakness, tingling, and pain can all result from neural compression. The location at which these symptoms are experienced will vary depending on which region of the spine is affected:
• Cervical spine (neck) – Symptoms can appear in the neck, upper back, shoulders, arms and/or hands.
• Thoracic spine (middle back) – Patients may experience discomfort in the middle back, torso, ribs, and/or internal organs.
• Lumbar spine (lower back) – Parts affected can include the lower back, hips, buttocks, legs, and/or feet.
How is the Condition Treated?
Treatment for degenerative disc disease almost always begins with conservative, nonsurgical methods. This can include one or more of the following:
• Over-the-counter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to block the body's production of the COX-1 and/or COX-2 enzymes
• The application of heat to increase blood flow to the affected area and aid in the healing process
• The application of ice, which can numb pain and reduce swelling
• Physical therapy to strengthen the muscles in the neck and back to relieve some of the strain that is being placed on the affected nerve
• Lifestyle changes including weight loss, becoming more physically active, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption, among others
Some patients may choose to complement these treatments with a variety of alternative therapies. Though the medical community has yet to agree on the overall effectiveness of a number of these therapies, many patients assert that their symptoms are relieved thanks to acupuncture, restorative yoga, and herbal supplements, among other therapies.
Does Degenerative Disc Disease Require Surgery?
The majority of patients are able to find adequate relief from the symptoms of degenerative disc disease through the use of conservative treatments and/or alternative therapies. However, a small percentage of patients may find little to no relief even after utilizing nonsurgical treatments for several weeks or months. These patients may be advised to consider undergoing a surgical procedure. While in the past a patient's only option may have been highly invasive open spine surgery, some are now given the choice between an invasive operation and an endoscopic procedure. A minimally invasive procedure can offer a number of advantages over open spine surgery, most notably being that an endoscopic procedure is performed on an out-patient basis. Patients who undergo a minimally invasive procedure are also at a reduced risk for infection, blood clot, or internal bleeding.
Before consenting to any operation for degenerative disc disease, patients would be wise to receive a second – or even third – opinion to ensure that they received the proper diagnosis to begin with.

For many people, the high cost of cellular communications has left them in the proverbial dark. They have been relegated to dealing with a variety of issues that make it difficult to communicate with others. Not only that, many low income families can't even talk to each other when there's an emergency abounding. Conservatives seem to think that this is somewhat fair in a free market society, as those that can afford to have a cell phone buy them and those that don't, simply don't have a way to talk to anyone. Unfortunately that is not fair and that's why the Lifeline Assistance idea started to come into the picture.
Four major carriers have united with the United States Government to help with the communication gap that is currently being experienced by those that are less fortunate. Those that cannot afford the high cost of a digital cellular phone can now acquire one for free, and get service for free as well. This might sound like a crazy plot, but it's 100% accurate and true. You'll find that this will allow anyone to move forward with relative ease and get the proper communication device that is standard today.
Conservatives often times want to pull away the government's assistance on the less fortunate because they do not believe in handouts. But when they start to argue their point, counterpoints are easily brought up that defeat their ideas. For instance, if a person can't make or receive phone calls, how are they to get a job? Your standard job application today has a form that you have to fill out in order to get any major position and in that form it has a line for a phone number. With the ubiquitous nature of cellular communications, no one really has a landline, and even that costs a great deal of money these days.
It's with that in mind that people can now simply move forward and get a free phone. The free phone plans are simple, and they are budgeted for use within the parameters of certain regulations. That means that not just anyone can procure one of these devices. In order to qualify for this option, you have to be under the poverty line and have proof of that notion. Not just anyone can waltz into a provider and get the service, which is why this is an amazing option for those in need.
Pundits and naysayers don't realize that in these modern times, it's crucial to have the option to call someone at any given moment. This is especially true in times of emergency when help is needed and 911 isn't available otherwise. Conservatives can attack all they want, but the current landscape has already shifted away from what they want. With more and more people waking up to the free options, the government continues to do good by those in need. If you or someone you know is in need, it's imperative to note that you can get a free cellular phone, 250 free minutes, and get networking to move forward and into a better financial state.

When it comes to getting cellular communication up and running, the average person has the money to spare, even if it's a limited option that doesn't cost a whole lot. There are a lot of great plans that are available to the average person, but that doesn't necessarily bode well for those that don't have income at all. For instance, if you're homeless or you're unemployed and do not have any money coming in, you may not be able to get back on your feet without having a cell phone. This harsh reality hits those that are homeless very hard, and getting forward momentum can seem like insurmountable odds are being engaged. That is all changing as there is no free cell phones for the homeless and it's coming from Assurance Wireless.
Assurance Wireless has been pushing their free plan for anyone that is part of a low income bracket or is dealing with a bout of homelessness and is in need of a quality cellular phone provider for a low cost. This might seem like something that is difficult to manage, but it's actually easier than you might think. There are a few things that you'll need to understand about this program before taking advantage of it.
First and foremost, it's imperative to realize that this is not for everyone. It's for those that meet the parameters of homeless or very low income. That means that the average joe isn't going to be able to go to Assurance Wireless and get a phone for free. Certain parameters need to be met, but once they are met with proper order, the phone and services is subsidized by the government. That's right, it's 100% free without an additional cost at all. The plan is limited to 250 minutes of talk, and 250 text messages. Additional options are available through a variety of resources.
For those that find 250 minutes too limited, you can add minutes through Virgin mobile refill cards and utilize third party payment options like PayPal to add minutes. That might be advantageous over time, but the initial offerings are 100% free and are not substandard network options at all.
Right now this programs is only available in 33 states, and doesn't cover 100% of the population. Those that are looking for low cost cellular phones are not going to qualify if they don't match the criteria of being homeless or extremely low income. This is really meant to help those that are actively trying to get work, or back out of a negative situation into a positive one. Often time's employers, even for rudimentary jobs, need to contact someone, and a free cell phone beats the payphones that are not always available. For those that are not doing so well financially, this is a saving grace that technology providers are noting as great. In the case of free cell phones for the homeless, Assurance Wireless is making strides to assist, and it comes with no strings attached. This is definitely a helping hand in communication to those that need it most.

For millions of people the latest and greatest gadgets are out of reach. This includes cellular communication devices that require a great deal of money to have. Think about the cost of the average phone that you would normally get from a carrier and you'll have to spend upwards of hundreds of dollars in order to have the privilege of communication with others. This can be painstaking, especially for those that have limited resources and are dealing with financial problems. Even though many of the poorest people around the nation can't get access to the higher end options, the government is changing the notion of communications for anyone less fortunate than those that can buy phones on their own. With the help of Reachout Wireless, government funded cell phone programs abound to help out those that need communication devices for free.
This might sound crazy, but those that are dealing with poverty can now get a free phone, and 250 free minutes. That is not a hoax and it is not something that will end up costing more money in the long run, it is absolutely free and is not at all costly. You'll find that this is something that most people don't really know about, which is why it's important to get the word out about this incredible opportunity to get a phone and some minutes.
Some people might assume that there are strings attached, but the fact of the matter is quite opposite. You'll find that the cost is nothing, absolutely nothing to have this. The requirements are low income, and some other factors that differ from state to state. For those that fit the parameters and can show proof or lack of income, the phones can be utilized just like many of the latest and greatest devices you see advertised on a regular basis.
The cost of cell phone ownership and use is quite high in these modern times, which is why the government is stepping in to help those that need communication options for work, school, and beyond. It's important to note that not everyone will qualify for this option, as there are some that are not at the poverty level that is required by most states. It's also important to note that not all states offer this service, which is something that most don't realize.
Look for Reachout Wireless in your state and read carefully the requirements to get one of these free options. There are no strings attached here, there's no major bait and switch, and you won't regret the option to move forward with the glorious world of communication. This is subsidized by the government and they even allow for more minutes to be purchased at a low rate, so that if 250 minutes aren't enough, more are available at an increased value. There's no reason why anyone shouldn't have the opportunity to have a phone, especially in these times of uncertainty where emergencies need immediate attention. The cost is nothing, there are no strings, and it's provided by the government, making this a great option for those less fortunate.

One of the biggest changes to come to modern times is that of the communication process that we all go through. Instead of the traditional methods of calling someone, you can easily text them or call their cellular phone and have contact with them at any given moment. That has definitely changed from the days where you would have to utilize a pay phone somewhere to get a hold of someone, and hopefully they were even at home to receive the phone call. Then of course there were pagers, but today, communication is so much easier than ever before. It's with that in mind that millions of people have gone to great lengths to procure one of the latest gadgets in these modern times, and that can be quite costly. However, there is another way to go at it, and that's to get the government to pay for your cell phone service.
Most people don't really understand how this is possible, and that's ok, it's a new way to get 100% free service and a phone, through Safelink Wireless. This company is one of the many companies that are being subsidized by the United States Government to help those that need a phone, get one, and pay the service as well. This might sound too good to be true, and for some it is, but not if you meet the requirements. There are certain parameters that you'll have to adhere to in order to get this option, but it's not that difficult.
In order to get a free phone and service, you'll have to be of a low income background. Families that have a low income are eligible to get this option free and clear. Every state has a different set of rules, but this is one of the basic formats that you'll find. The cost will be zero, allowing you to move forward with a no cost solution to communication. The phone comes free and every month you'll be able to use 250 minutes without paying a dime.
For those that are looking for more than just the initial minutes that are given, additional minutes can be added for a low cost. The process of getting this relies on paperwork and proof of income, but other than that, it is highly possible to let the government get the phone bill instead of you and your family. This is a program that has become available across 33 states and continues to deliver service to those that need it the most.
Millions of people around the world are in search of low cost phone service, and many times they are turned away because of the high cost involved. For those that are tired of spending a great deal of money on phone service, this option is going to be amazing. All you have to do is qualify, and you'll get what most people pay upwards of $150 a month for. No contracts, no bait and switch, this is 100% real and available to those that don't have the means to get a plan any other way.

Those who work with blood or other potentially infectious material are at high risk of exposure from bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne pathogen classes can be taken online or through office training. Most online courses are less than an hour and certification is available directly after the class. OSHA does require employees to be trained and certified if they regularly work with blood and body fluids.
Training Requirements
Those who work around and with blood need to take bloodborne pathogen classes. These classes include education concerning HIV, AIDS, HBV and HBC. Workers in all health care industries include dentistry plus public safety jobs are out in the open concerning bloodborne pathogens on a daily basis and need to take these classes. Doctors, nurses, fire and rescue personnel dentists, police officer and laboratory workers are at risk and should be trained on clean up and exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Those who do not have direct contact with potential infectious materials are also at risk of exposure. These types of employees include non-health care workers in the housekeeping janitorial industry and tattoo artists.
If you attempt to provide help or aid to injured persons or for children playing with contaminated sharps you need to be aware of bloodborne pathogens. There are over a million Americans infected with HIV as many more who carry hepatitis B or C. For your health's sake and those around you, it is vital that you take bloodborne pathogen classes.
Risk of Infection after Exposure
Those healthcare workers who have received the hepatitis B vaccine program have developed immunity to the virus. There is virtually no risk for infection. Average risk for infections after a needlestick is only 1.8 percent and no known blood exposure to the eye, nose or mouth has been recorded. You may contract HCV from exposure to skin that is broken or injured, but there are no known risks from exposure to intact skin from a carrier of bloodborne pathogens.
The risk of infection after being exposure to blood and body fluids of someone infected with HIV is about one in three hundred. Most needlestick exposures do not led to infection, but precautions do need to be taken to avoid exposure.
Types of Training Classes
Most training modules are for those who are exposed to blood and other potential infectious material. Classes are intended to offer an understanding of what bloodborne pathogens are plus the common modes of transmission and methods of preventing exposures.
Most bloodborne pathogen training is introductory in nature. If your job responsibilities involve occupation exposure to bloodborne pathogens you need specific training to your work environment and practices. If you take bloodborne pathogen classes you will be given the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers.
After taking certified bloodborne pathogen classes you will be able to define bloodborne pathogens. Explain universal precautions and recognize the signs or labels that indicate a bloodborne pathogen hazard. You should also be able to give examples of how bloodborne pathogens can be transmitted and distinguish between a work practice control and an engineering control.

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Privacy Rule protects the private health information of patients and takes action when any complaint regarding this is made against a healthcare provider or healthcare plan. In case the organization is found to be in the wrong, they risk facing serious penalties. Sharing patient information with unauthorized individuals is a violation of the HIPAA law and can result in imprisonment and/or heavy fines. HIPAA violation has strict consequences and thus is it essential for healthcare organizations to become certified.
Getting a HIPAA certification is not a complicated process and is essential for the proper functioning of the organization.
Becoming HIPAA certified involves attending certain courses and then undertaking exams at the end. The courses are designed to help you understand HIPAA requirements and perform all the processes and procedures of being HIPAA compliant. When you finish the course and pass the exam you will receive a completion certificate to prove you have undergone training and are knowledgeable about HIPAA laws.
Here are 3 reasons why HIPAA certification is a must for healthcare organizations:
• Covered organizations require their employees to be HIPAA certified. This is a simple process, especially if you decide to complete the training online. Online training classes are available throughout the day and can be done in your free time from home. Sometimes your employer may arrange training for a number of employees together. Either ways, it is essential for a healthcare employee to know the policies and procedures related to HIPAA.
• If you do not comply with HIPAA guidelines you may face serious penalties. In order to know and comply with all the regulations properly, you need to attend a certification course. Delaying your certification could cost you a lot more than money. The penalty for non-compliance can be severe depending on the case. You may be fined huge sums of money or may even be imprisoned for 5 years. In order to avoid such hassles in your profession, it is better to become HIPAA certified. Repeated violations of HIPAA laws may also lead to the healthcare organization and employee losing their license to practice.
• HIPAA training for healthcare employees is a federal law. According to the law, healthcare employees who deal with medical records of patients must be trained appropriately. This is to protect confidential medical information from getting into the wrong hands. Patients have rights over their own medical information, and will trust only those employees who know how to keep their records safe from the public. Only a trained employee will understand the importance of patient privacy and strive to maintain it.
Thus you see why healthcare care organizations insist on their employees being HIPAA certified. If you are looking for a job in the healthcare field, taking the course can increase your chances of getting the job. Cleaning your house may seem like an ominous task, but really it is not. If you have everything planned and ready you can get your house cleaned in minutes. The two evils that delay house cleaning are procrastination and fear of hard work. Don't let these two get you down! You don't need to spend hours and hours scrubbing the floors and walls. All you need are some time management and housecleaning tips.
Here are some tips for you to follow if you need your house cleaned in a hurry.
• Use a Timer:
An effective way to get motivated to start cleaning is to tell yourself it's for a set amount of time. Pull out your brooms, mops, and buckets and set your timer. Set a realistic time limit-maybe one or two hours. When you know that you will be free of your cleaning duties once the timer goes off, it will give you enough motivation to work hard for those few hours.
• Put on some music:
Get your player out and put on your favorite rock music! Rock-and –roll songs will get you on your feet and will draw you into fast cleaning. Sing and dance along as you dust off your tables. You will have a clean house in no time and will enjoy yourself too!
• Involve the others at home:
Get your other housemates, spouse, roommate, kids, whoever is around, to help you with the cleaning. If you have help you can get the house cleaning done in half the time. You can even turn it into a game to make it more fun. Divide the people into the different rooms and see who finished first! To make it interesting keep a small prize for the winner! Put on some music and get to work!
• Keep all cleaning materials in one place:
Pick a shelf in the cupboard or fill a bag with all your cleaning supplies. You can have a duster, window cleaner, wipes, mops, squeegee, furniture polish, feather duster, rags, and cleaning sprays. Don't waste all your time rummaging in your cupboard or searching round the house for your cleaning supplies. Having them all in one place will save you a lot of time.
• Use a big bag trash bag:
As you move around the house, cleaning, tote around a black plastic bag with you. Any wastebasket contents, floor sweepings, or leftover debris must go into the bag. Once the bag is full, dump it into your garbage bin outside the house for recycling.
• Move in a systematic manner:
Don't move around the house in circles. It may seem you're getting things done but you're actually just moving round and round, retracing your steps. Try and work your way from up to down and left to right. If you clean in a systematic manner like this you will done with a room in no time and can move onto another.
Housecleaning doesn't have to be a tedious and tiresome job. You can make it fun and do it quickly. You just need some motivation, a plan, and some cleaning supplies! If you feel it's too much for you to do yourself, call a house cleaning service like Stapleton Home Services. They will do a great job for you.

When you decide to start your own housecleaning service, you have to decide on all the different services you would like to offer. It's up to you to decide the services you want to add as part of your housecleaning agency.
In other words, you must offer the services that are in high demand, ie those that your clients want and need. When you are in the housecleaning business you will come across two different types of clients: recurring and one-time. Recurring customers are those who are your loyal customers and will want their house cleaned regularly. One-time clients are those who will get their home cleaned once and you will never see them again.
Depending on these two types of customers, you can understand what types of cleaning services you should offer.
• Recurring Services: Recurring clients may request your services weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, depending on their requirements. For your regular clients you can offer the following services:
- Spring cleaning (for initial housecleaning)
- Maintenance/ regular cleaning will be continued after the initial cleaning on regular intervals.
• One-time Services: For your one-time clients, here is what you can offer:
- Regular cleaning: This is the initial and most basic housecleaning you will be offering your clients. Develop an initial plan that includes all the tasks you need to perform for the session. You can sit down with the homeowner to understand exactly what he needs from your services.
- Spring cleaning: Spring cleaning is the same as regular cleaning with a few extra services added to it. You can choose what extra services you would like to offer or you could make a decision after you see the client's house and understand their needs.
- Move-in and move-out cleaning: This is again similar to what you would offer in a spring cleaning service but without furniture cleaning. Some housecleaning agencies clean insides of refrigerators, ovens, and cabinets as part of their cleaning, but there is no rule of thumb. You can decide if you want to add those services or not.
When you start your own housecleaning business you must aim at getting maximum number of weekly and bi-weekly clients. This is because these clients will go on to become your regular and loyal followers in the long run. They will bring you the maximum profit. Think about it- a weekly client will pay you 50 odd times a year while a bi-weekly client will do it 26 times a year. In addition, recurring cleaning is much easier that one-time cleaning as it takes less time and energy to perform recurrent cleanings.
All these factors must be considered when you decide to start your own company. Then try to figure out the types of services you would like to offer. It is always a good idea to start small with only a few services, get recognized for your quality, and then expand your agency to include specialty services. This will help you climb a notch above your competitors.

Whether you're looking forward to your annual or routine cleaning at home, it is very important to consider a few important points. Here are a few dos and don'ts to remember while cleaning your house.
What to do:
• Make a list of all the cleaning supplies you need. Buy them and keep ready in advance. This way you won't waste time collecting supplies from all over the house. You can focus all your attention on your cleaning.
• If you have bought any commercial products, make sure to check if they include any toxic substances. It is always best to use homemade solutions rather than compromising the health of your family members.
• However, if you decide to go ahead with commercial cleaning products, dilute the solution with water before you use it. If used undiluted it may leave stains on floors and other surfaces.
• Make sure that you store your cleaning supplies on the top most shelf of your cupboard, so that your kids can't get to them easily. Label all the containers so they can be easily identified. Also close the lid properly before storing them away.
• If you have wooden or granite surfaces make sure you know what house cleaning solutions are safe to use on them.
• When you start cleaning, move from top to bottom, ie clean all the dust from table and counter tops first, before you begin mopping the floor.
• Ensure that you first try out the new cleaning solutions in small areas that are not easily seen before you use them in the main areas to avoid any damage.
What not to do:
• Don't wait till the house gets very dirty before you start your cleaning. Clean regularly. This is the best way to maintain cleanliness all the time. If something spills or falls, clean it at once.
• Don't use paper towels to clean glass surfaces. It is more expensive and may also scratch and damage the glass. Instead, you can use soft washable or microfiber cloths for cleaning.
• Don't use all house cleaning solutions on all the surfaces. What works for wooden surfaces may not work for glass ones and so on. Use a small amount of the solution on an inconspicuous part of the surface and test its safety before you begin using it properly.
• Don't think your house is a chemical laboratory! Sometimes mixing two house cleaning solutions like chlorine bleach and ammonia may cause toxic reactions.
• Don't reuse empty bottles of solutions for other things. They must be disposed off immediately.
The best way to start off is to make a cleaning plan and write it down. It does not need to be too detailed. Just write down what you want to do and how you want to do it and how long it will take you. Check online for lots more tips and print them out to have them handy in a folder. Once you have this planned out, all you have to do is follow these guidelines and you will have a clean house in no time!

If you've been diagnosed with a spine condition for which your physician has recommended surgery, you may be wondering if you can have the operation performed in a surgery center instead of a hospital. This decision will ultimately need to be made by your physician, based on the type of spine condition you have and the type of operation you require. In general, though, some spine conditions can be treated with minimally invasive procedures that are often performed in an outpatient setting like a surgery center. Keep in mind that even if the condition you're suffering from can be treated with a minimally invasive procedure, you may not be a candidate.
Conditions
In some cases, the following spine conditions can be treated in an outpatient surgery center:
• Sciatica
• Herniated discs
• Bulging discs
• Degenerative disc disease
• Spinal stenosis
• Facet disease
• Spondylitis
Open-Spine Surgeries vs. Minimally Invasive Procedures
Each spine condition requires a unique surgical approach. For the purpose of this article, we'll only focus on the differences between an open-spine surgery and a minimally invasive procedure for degenerative disc disease.
An open-spine surgery (performed in a traditional hospital setting) can require a very large incision and the dissection of muscles in the neck or back. Once the surgeon has gained access to the affected disc, he or she may remove the disc in its entirety. An intervertebral cage is installed in the empty disc space and is attached to the vertebrae directly above and below with rods and screws. The cage is then filled with bone graft material, which will eventually fuse the two vertebrae together. Recovering from this type of surgery can take several months and may require an arduous rehabilitation.
The minimally invasive procedure used to treat degenerative disc disease is performed through an incision that is only about an inch long. The surgeon inserts a series of tubes (each one a little larger than the last) until the muscles have been gently pushed aside and he or she has ample access to the affected disc. A small camera (endoscope) and surgical tools are then inserted into the tube. The surgeon uses these tools to remove only the portion of the disc that is pressing against a neural structure. The disc is then cauterized and the tube and surgical tools are removed before the surgeon closes the incision with a few stitches. Most patients are able to resume their daily activities in only a couple weeks and some even experience immediate relief.
In addition to the advantages mentioned above, patients who undergo minimally invasive procedures also face less risk than those who undergo open-spine surgery. For instance, thanks to smaller incisions, minimally invasive procedures have less risk of causing infection and blood loss. Patients also face a reduced chance of developing Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS), which is the continuation or worsening of symptoms following surgery.
Talk to Your Doctor
If a minimally invasive procedure sounds appealing, speak with your doctor to find out if you're a candidate. Also be sure to ask your doctor which surgery center he or she operates out of and do some research to make sure the center has a reputation for excellence.

The average consumer may grumble about the costs of healthcare, but we all know that the industry is necessary to help prevent, diagnose, and treat many different types of diseases, illnesses, and injuries. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare industry is projected to have one of the fastest job growths through 2020 than many other industries. As such, occupations in the healthcare are some of the best jobs to pursue.
As reported by US News in 2013, the top five healthcare occupations in the US include:
• Dentist – With an expected 21.1 percent growth up to the year 2020, becoming a dentist is a good idea. Trained to diagnose and treat conditions that affect the teeth and gums, dentists also educate and promote good oral health. You're more likely to find a dentist position in a clinical setting or private office, but some are found in hospitals or outpatient care centers.
• Registered nurse – Registered nurses (RNs) are indispensible in many facets of healthcare and there are plenty of job openings in various locations across the country. RNs can administer medication, manage medical records, and explain procedures and prescriptions. They work in hospitals or physicians' offices, but there are also opportunities available in home care, schools, and business settings.
• Pharmacist – A pharmacist is responsible for properly dispensing medicine and related advice to individuals. Pharmacies may be located in hospitals or retail chains, but medicines can also be dispensed via clinical and mail-order settings. This profession is expected to grow 25.4 percent through 2020.
• Physician – Trained doctors, whether medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) diagnose and treat patients for all manner of diseases and disorders, and provide education regarding disease prevention, diet, and hygiene. Some doctors may specialize in holistic care or preventative medicine.
• Physical therapist – Physical therapists help patients improve body mechanics, reduce pain, and provide options to help prevent future discomfort. Through a variety of modalities, including massage and low-impact exercises, physical therapists help patients better perform everyday tasks. The physical therapy field is expected to grow by 39 percent by 2020.
Entering into the Healthcare Field
If you're considering a position in the healthcare industry, it's important to know exactly what you'll need to do to get there. For example, to become a physician, you'll need to:
• Complete an undergraduate program; majoring in biology or pre-med can help you better prepare of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)
• Take and pass the MCAT; more prestigious medical programs will require exceptional MCAT scores to be accepted
• Earn an MD or DO degree by graduating from a four-year medical program
• Complete a three- to five-year residency training program; the length of time will depend on the specialty in which you're training
• Complete a one- to three-year fellowship training program, if necessary; some fellowships are optional, but others, such as those for cardiology and gastroenterology specialists, are required
• Obtain a state medical license in the state you plan to practice
• Pass the medical board exam for your specific specialty; the American Board of Medical Specialties administers exams for 24 different medical specialty boards, and while board certification used to be optional, most employers are now making it a requirement for employment
Do Your Research
Before you spend a lot of time and money pursuing a career in healthcare, make sure it's definitely what you want to do. Talk to a physician, nurse, pharmacist, or another healthcare professional to see why they entered their particular field and to learn what they like and dislike about their jobs. This can help you narrow down your own interests and habits, which will allow you to formulate the best route to your goals.
