    Choosing a computer is a very important decision as these days most of us end up spending a major part of our time working on them. Buying a computer can involve making several decisions.     Digital merchandising is a promising technology that can deliver a targeted message to a specific set of customers. The choice of design elements can be overwhelming. This article discusses digital signage content with an emphasis on format.
     
    Remember that Content is King
     
    Even with all of the bells and whistles that digital signage offers, without the right message, the technology will accomplish very little. Before deciding on a format, be sure you know what your message is and how often you want to deliver it.
     
    Digital Signage Content – Available Formats
     
    The technical terms used when planning the visuals for digital signage can be confusing. Here is a short description of some of the most common terms.
     
    • JPEG – JPEG is a widely used image format that tends to be preferred over other formats for large-scale image distribution.
     
    • MPEG – MPEG is the most common compression format for digital video. There are several MPEG standards available today. MPEG-1 allows for smaller files but does not offer the same image quality that MPEG-2 does. MPEG-2 is the current video standard for digital TV and DVDs.
     
    • MPEG-4 – This standard was originally designed for low-bandwidth video distribution. It offers better compression of video than MPEG-2, but it is still considered by most digital content creators to be an evolving technology. For now MPEG-2 seems to offer more interoperability with the various types of digital signage hardware.
     
    • Flash – Flash is an animation format that can incorporate other types of data, including JPEG, audio and video. Digital content creators are beginning to use Flash because it can create more visually compelling content than many other tools currently used for digital signs.
     
    Digital Signage Content Considerations
     
    Content for digital signs can be static or include animation or video. When planning the format of your content, be sure to keep these points in mind:
     
    • Cost – Video and animation can cost a lot of time and money. Some estimates for Flash animation segments range from a couple of days to a week, at a minimum cost of $2,500. The cost for each second of new video shot on location is estimated to be at least $1,000. Static text and images are relatively inexpensive, going from $250 to $1,000 per screen, by some estimates.
     
    • Templates – Templates of static content or animation can help reduce costs because they allow many elements to be re-used. In the case of video, images are often specific to a particular item or message. This means it is harder to re-use video, making an already expensive option more costly.
     
    • Volume – The choice of format depends heavily on the volume of spots you need. If you require several hundred spots, video may not be the best option.
     
    • Combine for Greater Effect. A few seconds of Flash can be combined with some still shots to make a compelling but less expensive display.
     
    Digital signage content does not have to cost a lot to work. If you plan carefully and make sure you have the right message, your digital signage content will accomplish its goals.

    In the world of digital signage there is a debate about which display option is best – LCD or plasma.
     
    There are many factors summarized here, including performance and cost, that will determine whether you choose LCD or plasma for your digital signage display.
     
    The Mechanics
     
    A January, 2007 article on selfserviceworld.com described the differences between LCD and plasma in layperson's terms. In summary:
     
    • LCD consists of two sheets of transparent, polarized material, one of which is treated with a polymer containing liquid crystals. The crystals interpret the electric current and control the light that passes through. Fluorescent tubes behind the crystals produce the light that passes out to the viewer. The crystals do not emit light so LCD screens use less electricity than other displays.
     
    • Plasma displays use glass coated with bubbles that contain ionized gas in red, blue, and green subcompartments. A phosphorescent coating is applied to the glass and when electricity passes through the plasma it emits ultraviolet rays that show the appropriate color.
     
    Performance
     
    An oft-cited concern with plasma screens is burn-in. Depending on what you read, burn-in is either a serious problem or a minor one that can be easily remedied.
     
    Burn-in is a term used to describe static images that become permanently visible after being displayed for long periods of time. Burn-in is not an issue with LCD displays but can become a problem with plasma. Burn-in is becoming less of an issue as digital signage display firms employ some simple techniques for avoiding it: ensuring images are frequently rotated, using more motion, and lowering contrast and brightness levels.
     
    Lifecycle is another concern. At one time LCD had a longer life, but the life expectancy of LCD and plasma are now roughly equivalent, lasting about 50,000 hours each.
     
    LCD units are lighter and use less power, factors which may affect your decision.
     
    Contrast ratios (the difference between black and white) are much higher on plasma, which results in a clearer and brighter image. Plasma displays video images and fast motion better than LCD and offers a wider viewing angle, which can be important in retail environments.
     
    Cost and Size
     
    The deciding factor between LCD and plasma has often been cost. With the prices of large-format LCD displays dropping, cost is becoming less of an issue.
     
    Size is an issue that ties in with cost since it is your budget that may ultimately determine the size of screen you choose. Plasma is generally available in larger sizes, although this is changing as LCD displays get bigger. Plasma does still tend to win out for larger displays - digital signage display designers tend to prefer it for displays over 50 inches.
     
    How Can You Decide on a Digital Signage Display Format?

    I don't know how many times we quote a prospective client and when they compare our rates to competitive "SEO" companies they wind up hiring the "cheaper" agency without doing their homework and making their decision based on price alone.
     
    Why would they hire us when the agency they did hire can produce a 1000 links in 30 days or put them in 100 directories in 24 hours and all for the low price of $500 bucks. Awesome! Another one I like is the "We can put you on page one of the major search engines for 10 keyword terms, guaranteed!" Amazing!
     
    Well, in short time the client realizes what we all know, you get what you pay for. The links are completely useless and can be dangerous for that matter. Your directory links are buried inside some inconsequential link farm and your page one ranking is on MSN. Woohoo! (Well they did say one of the Major search engines.)
     
    Do you really believe that using some automated submission service or outsourcing your SEO overseas will provide you with better results than a logical, consistent, ethical SEO company is capable of? As in most cases, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
     
    Yes, you may be on page one quickly because they are using some black hat techniques and Google hasn't caught up to them yet. Better still, they may have some success with a loooong tail keyword but in the end, it's all about hard, consistent work. Shortcuts will get you into trouble and do you really want to be the one explaining to your boss how your corporate brand has been tarnished (as security walks you to the door).
     
    Frankly, we see numerous clients who have already spent 4-5K on SEO and you couldn't see the SEO on their sites, never mind the ranking. So it is no wonder clients are gun shy about forking out more money.
     
    You need to do your homework when hiring an SEO company.
     
    • Make sure you are talking about Google results, Yahoo! or MSN are secondary
     
    • Search Google for serious keyword terms they have been optimizing for.
     
    • Ask for phone numbers of several satisfied clients.
     
    • Ask for resumes of the people actually handling your account?
     
    • Will they be completely transparent with you?
     
    • Will they teach you or your staff so they understand what is going on?
     
    If the keyword terms for your industry are highly competitive, don't bring a knife to a gunfight. Don't hire a nickel or dime agency to save money, it will only cost you more in the end and may get you banned from Google. Make sure the agency has the proper resources to complete your project on time. You may have to pay more initially but you won't have to start over again six months from now. Six months in which your competitors are stretching their lead on you.
     
    Besides, bringing a knife to a gunfight…only works for James Coburn, but now I'm dating myself.

    This is the final step. You've found the perfect house. You're happy with your mortgage arrangements. Now it's time to close the deal. Closing is a process where all legal and financial obligations, which were stated in your "Offer of Purchase", have all been made.
     
    There are many things to keep in mind for the closing to go smoothly. Here are the steps:
     
    • Give a copy of your purchase offer to your lawyer and have him or her go over the terms and conditions.
     
    • Meet all the conditions of the offer by a specified date.
     
    • A land survey is completed.
     
    • Complete all the various inspections including a home inspection.
     
    • Have your lawyer carry out title searches.
     
    • Your lawyer will check into taxes and liens.
     
    • Make sure you have made all the necessary payments, including a deposit.
     
    • Check to make sure all property taxes are up to date (lawyer).
     
    • Finalize all your mortgage paperwork (lawyer).
     
    • Arrange for utilities to be connected to your new home.
     
    • Confirm the purchase price, the balance of the deposit and any other adjustments by having your lawyer prepare a statement of adjustment.
     
    • Once all of the above are complete, you need to sign a cheque and pay all remaining legal fees.

    This is the day you take possession of our new home and you get your keys. But much more happens on Closing Day.
     
    • Your lender provides the mortgage money to your lawyer.

    With luxury and mystique in the name, the evening gown has echoes of movie award ceremonies, romantic parties, glamorous gatherings and maybe even a little of the fairy tale about it. Distinguishable from its everyday equivalent by its expensive fabrics, flattering tailoring and ornate, perhaps extravagant, details, the evening dress is the ultimate display of opulence. Even where no opulence exists, it's a bold step into a society that values such things. Perhaps the most decadent expression of this wealthy background is in its very name; an evening gown isn't just meant to be work in the evening, it's meant to be worn on just one evening.
     
    Fashion dictates the look of the well dressed woman's evening gown in any given season, so there's no point in trying to make a blanket definition of the look. They can go from the short, figure-hugging and revealing to much more flowing and loose, and can come with or without sleeves or straps. The manner of its acquisition will be different for all of us, though.
     
    Whereas most of us would go for an off-the-peg number, some will have their dresses tailor-made for them to their own specification; when you're near the top of your game you'll have it done by a famous designer. At the very pinnacle of celebrity society, the whole world is turned upside down as you'll probably have the dress given to you for free as long as you're wearing it for an event that's beamed around the world – many people will tune into the Oscars to watch the red carpet and switch off once the film nonsense gets going.     The challenge for us normal people, therefore, is to land that special look without it breaking the bank. If you were measured up today, could you guarantee that you'd be exactly the same size in several weeks when the dress is completed? Of course not. We all have our figure fluctuations as the year cycles by, so as long as you can find a rough approximation of our figure size, you'll be able to get into the dress with the odd minor modification – a stitch here, a safety pin there – assisted by your lady-in-waiting (your best mate Mandy, whose lady-in-waiting happens to be you).
     
    If you're wearing heels at the event, and you probably will be, remember to have them on when any modifications are being made as they profoundly affect your posture. It's also important to perform at least a few basic manoeuvres in the comfort of your own home, especially if your dress is designed to fit you with no room to spare. Try standing up and sitting down, walking up and down some steps and maybe even doing a little dance – these movements will reveal any tension points that could seriously ruin your evening – or at least tell you what not to attempt!

    What is the point of hats? If you're a medieval noblewoman, you'll probably say the bit at the top, and we'll all clap and laugh gently for fear of losing our bodily hat blocks. For the rest of us, though, we might see the question as valid and very, very serious. We're not talking functional hats here – the builder's hard hat; the rambler's woolly hat or the baker's hygienic little number. No, the type we wear at weddings and swanky horse races, the ones that seem from the outside to require an awful lot of hands-on effort if they are to be prevented from bolting.
     
    Like most purely decorative items of clothing, the fancy hat can at least trace its heritage back to necessity. In the case of the formal hats of the aforementioned type, there are enough clues in their brims and the lacy features to suggest that keeping the sun off delicate faces on rare excursions out into the open was the inspiration. A hat certainly has the advantage over a parasol that it leaves two hands free for filling in betting slips and swigging champagne from a plastic flute.
     
    Once the tasteful fashion designers caught wind of the possibilities, it would only be a matter of time before form gave way to function and the formal hat would mutate into fruit bowls, strawberry punnets, sausage dinners and croquet lawns. But the flamboyant extremes are only attention-grabbers in a field that can actually contain great taste and refinement when done well. The subtle balance of looking fantastic while not drawing attention to oneself is particularly tricky, not least because at head level your likelihood of standing out in a crowd depends entirely on what everyone else is wearing. The designer who masters that one is guaranteed a head start.
     
    But evolution was to have another trick up its sleeve in the world of hat design: the fascinator. It cannot accurately be described as a hat, but labelling it a hair clip, headband, slide or hair corsage doesn't help either. You know when it's a fascinator because, well,, you're fascinated by it. The world's most famous fascinator must be the one worn by Princess Beatrice at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011. One of the most remarkable features of that fascinator was that it clearly outshone the one worn by her sister Eugenie. It became an instant cult classic, with people photoshopping it onto all sorts of historical figures, and ended up raising £80,000 for Unicef at auction.
     
    We can only guess at the next step the hat will take in its evolution. But we can definitely see the path it has taken so far. A trip to a good vintage clothing store will pay dividends if you're looking for a unique hat for a formal occasion. From the understated to the extreme, there will be a hat to match any gown, and it'll be guaranteed to be the talking point of the day – unless royalty is invited, of course.

    There can be few items of clothing so readily identifiable as being from one particular island group, but the Hawaiian shirt, or Aloha shirt, is one such garment. They were actually invented by a Chinese merchant who was based in Honolulu before the Second World War, and were constructed from the leftover pieces of kimono material.
     
    They were proving to be an instant success, but wartime got in the way of their worldwide spread. However once the war was over, the style really took off as several events coincided. The sudden increase in popularity of surfing made the style incredibly cool – surfers gravitated to Hawaii for its waves and weather. In 1959 Hawaii became the 50th state of the USA, firming up already strong ties. And finally the Rock 'n' Roll revolution also had a hand in the popularity of the shirt, especially when Elvis Presley sported one, along with an iconic Hawaiian garland, in the 1961 musical Blue Hawaii. (Other highlights were the song Can't Help Falling in Love and Angela Lansbury long before Murder, She Wrote.)
     
    All this would pale in comparison to the second surf explosion in the 1960s, spearheaded by The Beach Boys, with Brian Wilson's crafted melodies and harmonies setting the perfect benchmark for countless surf acts to try and equal. The imagery of the era - a supercharged hippy vibe accompanied by Volkswagen camper vans, blond-haired, Aloha-shirted dudes, bikini-clad beach babes and campfires on the beach – still has resonance to this day, perhaps as a reminder of a time of innocent hedonism.
     
    The look would remain in the public eye thanks to two hit TV series. Hawaii Five-O is probably best remembered for its theme tune and surfing opening credits, and ran from 1968 to 1980. The main characters were besuited and relatively straight-laced but there were plenty of opportunities to get the Hawaiian look onto camera, and this kept the vision alive. The series was reprised in 2010, under the radically different title Hawaii Five-0. (Typography geeks will notice that the original used a letter O while the later version uses a zero.) Magnum, PI was a more glamorous affair, with Tom Selleck screeching around the islands in his Ferrari, chasing bad guys in his role as a private investigator, almost invariably wearing his Aloha shirt. A 1986 episode even brought our old friend Angela Lansbury back to the islands, this time playing her familiar role, mystery writer Jessica Fletcher, in a crossover episode called "Novel Connection".
     
    So there we have it – a simple garment that has never really gone out of fashion thanks to a strong thread of popular culture keeping it in the public consciousness. This can surely only be equalled by jeans as far as perpetual trends goes. While Aloha shirts are still in production, there's something much more authentic about an original from the 1950s or 1960s. Pop your sunglasses on and have a look through your local vintage clothing store, and you'll find as many designs as there are days of summer. Even better, go online to find a vast array of Hawaiian shirts. What's great about them is that they're designed to be loose fitting, so finding one that "fits" is a piece of cake.

    Derived from practical work-wear, playsuits and jumpsuits don't have to look like garments for going to the building site or factory in? But would you be happy arranging if the banking clerk or travel agent was wearing a playsuit, even if it was a woman? Not everyone has the same view, because as the names indicate the playsuit was not necessarily purely with hands-on tasks in mind, and the jumpsuit was considered an ideal item for the fashion-conscious hang glider pilot. So your answer might be yes depending on your hobbies.
     
    The modern everyday interpretations of these two items of clothing are cousins, or derivations, of dresses and suits, both of which are perfectly acceptable as office wear. But would you take your close neighbour to the office except in exceptional circumstances? And of course strict formality is slowly losing ground in the work setting and more flexibility is being tolerated. As business in general is toning back its need to appear formal, the interpretation of formal wear is itself becoming more difficult to tie down. Somewhere in the middle the two will meet with a potentially disruptive clash of style, and as the boundaries become more vague the potential to make embarrassing in the new flexible era and stay safely acceptable? Can you really arrive at the office in a playsuit? It's tempting to say that depending on the office, the industry, the work colleagues, but for many now the answer is probably yes. After all, the world of playsuits and jumpsuits is itself quite varied, with some very formal fits and tight silhouettes on one side and less straight, expressive, floral materials on the other. A smart, conservative playsuit could certainly be a replacement for a skirt suit, and likewise a jumpsuit would be fine in an office where trouser suits were expected. You could always wear a jacket or cardigan if the look works, and this will make the illusion complete. The office will most likely tolerate any style but how would your image and self-esteem suffer if you went a step too far?
     
    Office work does not always imply traditional formal clothing whether you are a man or woman. Even in working environments where men have been always worn shirt, tie, suit combinations, the options offered to females has usually been quite wide, with trouser, dress or skirt options, and a blouse, knitwear or jacket on the torso. So it's not such a step for women to opt for a jumpsuit or playsuit that's at the more designer end of the spectrum.
     
    Another dilemma is how to complement the jumpsuit in terms of footwear, accessories, hair styles or jewellery. But then again the jumpsuit gives another angle after work when you might go for a meal, a drink or to the theatre. If your colleagues are looking uncomfortable in their traditional work clothes, you can feel smug that you stepped away from the norm, took a risk and now look and fell more ready for the evening ahead.

    Leather jackets for women are probably a much more diverse affair than their male counterparts, spanning as they do the whole spectrum of formality, from the rough and ready tasselled biker jacket to chic and subtle evening wear. This wide range of styles has ensured the leather jacket has survived many a fashion renaissance and will probably go on fitting the bill whatever direction style takes. And for those girls who aren't won over by leather, there's always the opportunity to be swayed by suede, leather's slightly more velvety cousin that brings a sensuality to the material while keeping its solid lines and ruggedness.
     
    And just in case you were picturing a classic black, shiny leather or matt brown suede, it's worth remembering that the colour palette of both takes in every imaginable colour, bookended by brilliant whites and jet blacks, and such a variety of finishes from glossy to matt that Dulux Paints cast envious glances in leather's direction.
     
    Of course, as with any browse through the annals of style, you'll come across some shockers in the leather jacket chapter. Designers have all too often accentuated leather's flashy lustre for all the wrong reasons, and the 1980s rears its ugly head quite noticeably in the leather department. The jackets of this era were often shapeless and unflattering, with loose, bulging waists tapering in around the thighs for a rugby ball silhouette that defies taste. Acres of unadorned leather would flap in the breeze, quite an achievement for a material as far removed from chiffon as is possible.
     
    Leather and suede jackets for women are at their best when they are either minimally sized or decorated with details, or are a blend of both. And folds and pleats just look too skin-like in leather to have any claim to beauty. If you're looking for inspiration in a vintage clothing store, you'll be able to see straight away which ones are working and which ones should be exported to Bavaria and converted into lederhosen.
     
    A timelessly cool look is the not-quite biker or flying jacket. With some nods to the rugged origins of the leather jacket (perhaps an abundance of pockets or some fur collar lining), the well designed ones keep the look simple and stylish without going over the top. If they end above the waist, that's great for wearing with jeans, but some of the most feminine leather or suede jackets are the thigh-length numbers, so long as they are designed with a narrow (often belted) waist and subtly flaring lower half.
     
    Or maybe you really don't care for remaining feminine and just want an honest to goodness leather jacket for the very reason that they defy time and, sometimes, refinement. If this sounds like you, you're going to be spoilt for choice. Accessorise away, beat it about a little and let it age gracelessly and you'll let the world know you're no shrinking violet.

    The 1950s provided us with the template for many of the things we now accept as culturally normal. There's rock'n'roll, which did more to change music consumption than anything before or since (although Simon Cowell might disagree); there's television, a pre-war technology that only really took off after the bombs stopped falling; and there's the bad boy.
     
    Now bad boys might not sound like something to aspire to, but in reality they were all a bunch of everyday lads who liked to act bad, drive fast cars and motorbikes and get into fisticuffs when they felt they had lost face over pinball or somesuch. But transformed onto the silver screen, these typical working class guys would have the girls swooning, feinting and coming over all queer. You'll already have thought of some of the icons; James Dean, Marlon Brando and Elvis Presley sum up the image and were the real heartbreakers of their day. You could also count the Fonz off Happy Days, but he was really a caricature, which of course means he was more realistic than any of them … plus he was about 20 years too late.
     
    Elements of the look are also fundamentally still with us. If we say jeans and a tight white T-shirt, you might wonder if style has moved on at all in the last 50 years (and you'd be ignoring the 60s and 70s completely). There are also the shades, preferably a pair of classic Ray-Bans, the winklepickers and finally the obligatory leather jacket. The jacket is probably the hardest element to pull off these days. It can more readily be associated with certain middle-aged presenters of TV motoring shows than with Hollywood icons, and you need to tread with care. The leather jacket has survived so many unbelievably tasteless eras that you need a sharp eye to spot a stylish cut, and if there is to be a pinnacle, it's probably safe to say that the LJ of the 1950s was it. If you're hitting the vintage clothing stores this weekend, beware of imitations.
     
    The biker jacket, as it is more commonly known, has to have a zip fastener that goes up at a slight angle, starting at the middle and ending roughly where the shoulder meets the neck. This is a vital touch, and jackets with central zips need to be discarded as quickly as your 50cc moped. A couple of zip-up pockets are OK, too, and the sleeves should also zip up to just short of the elbow to accommodate a pair of biker gloves when you're driving your Renault Clio … sorry, riding your Triumph Blackbird to work.
     
    So to get that authentic 50s heartbreaker style, you first have to look across the Atlantic to the bad boys of America, and once you've perfected the attitude (which is what mirrors were invented for), there's only one last thing to do. Get down to the chemist's and get something for the weekend: a tub of Brylcreem, because without that gravity-defying quiff, the whole edifice of 50s swagger will collapse around you. Don't say you weren't warned.

    At first look, the maxi skirt is to the mini skirt what the Austin Maxi was to the Mini – a piece of 70s frumpery compared to its sexy 60s … erm … mother. But that is to completely miss the point. Maxi skirts, and their dress equivalents, were hugely popular throughout the 1970s, and the chintzy designs remain to this day a legacy of the era. They came in every pattern and every colour under the sun, with big, bold floral displays, stark abstracts in purples and turquoise, and the odd tartan and tweed thrown in for good measure.
     
    The maxi skirt also marked the end of the era when it was not unusual for women to make their own clothes from patterns tucked into magazines, as the next era would be one of imported, mass-produced clothing. So if you're looking for some genuine 70s maxi action in a vintage clothing store, don't be surprised if there's no label in it. That is not to say the labels of high fashion weren't as eager as the domestic goddesses were to create these wonderful full-length garments; so don't expect everything you find to give you that "where have I seen this pattern?" feeling (which lasts until your great aunt Doreen asks you to open her curtains for her).
     
    Anyway, enough of the joking. Maxi skirts are hot right now, so it's time to land yourself something that has stood the test of time and go native. Yes, the modern ones are all well and good, but can you honestly say you think the ones you'll pick up from the high street will take you anywhere near the vibe of Penelope Keith or Felicity Kendal in their Good Life heydays? Of course not. The collective consciousness that prevailed in the 1970s was utterly purged in the 1980s, to the point where imitation is futile. A whole generation was brainwashed into believing the 70s was the era that fashion forgot, when, as we now know, that accolade belongs to the self-obsessed 80s. Okay, you might pick up something a little more thigh-hugging than 70s tastes would have allowed, and perhaps the material will be ever so slightly more delicate, but you'll be missing the je ne sais quoi, the earthy realness that made the 1970s what it was.
     
    So don't let anyone tell you that the 1960s, with their bare thighs and kinky boots, were the last word in sexy high street chic. For sure, they laid the foundations for a more relaxed and liberated future, but weren't they a little, you know, up tight, always looking over their shoulder? We've seen what became of the baby boomers, so we can read a lot into their fashion sense too. The 70s generation are the real movers and shakers today, they are the ones who created the linked-up digital world we now rely on. They were also the generation the 80s was a rebellion against. And they did it all surrounded by floral maxi skirts! Experience the dream. Live life to the maxi.

    We take sportswear for granted nowadays to the point where only a fraction of the clothing made by the big sportswear manufacturers is actually bought for performing athletic activities. Walk into a modern sports retailer and you'll see hundreds of types and brands of trainers, tops, caps and trousers (and the occasional pair of shorts) that will probably never see a running track, football field or baseball diamond.
     
    So it's fair to conclude that sportswear is now so ingrained in our modern fashion sensibility that we hardly notice it any more, even when we are wearing it. Most of us own a pair of trainers as a comfortable way of getting from A to B on foot. While trainer purists will argue about the stitching and number of eyelets until doomsday, the rest of us will pull a half decent pair off the shelf, try them and buy them, taking care to leave our old pair on top of a bin somewhere public.
     
    It's tempting to think "sportswear as everyday wear" as something dating back to the 1980s, with the "Scally" look that emanated from Liverpool (city and football club) after their tours of Europe. For sure, this look did start a trend that spread to Manchester and then nationally, partly influenced by football moving about throughout the season. And briefly, it was the height of fashion.
     
    But let's not forget that classic 50s and 60s male college fashion in the USA is largely divided between the sporty ones (often called jocks) and the intellectual or nerdy ones, especially when given the Hollywood treatment. Think of any film containing a 1950s college, and you're sure to see at least one baseball jacket, but usually a group of mischief-makers wearing identical jackets bearing an admirable display of sewing skills. And they always get their comeuppance at the end, preferably with a truckload of manure. And wasn't there a time in the 1920s when a pair of plus fours was the trouser to be seen in, on and off the greens?
     
    Something about sportswear triggers certain emotions in men. Perhaps it's a desire to show off their masculinity, or maybe it's a sigh at what could have been. It shows allegiance to a clan, too, just as much as being an emo or a punk does. And although team football shirts are not seen quite as much as they were a decade ago, match day in any major city will produce thousands of walking billboards for the teams' sponsors.
     
    Retro sportswear could be the perfect compromise between maintaining a sporty air and not looking too much like a latter-day jock. Because of the rich history of sporty casual-wear, there's plenty to choose from in most vintage clothing stores, much of which evokes a period when sport was less commercialised, less aggressive and played for the love of the game or the badge. The names and the logos of the top brands might have changed little over three or four decades, but a little retro sportswear in the wardrobe will tell the world that you're a man who love s his sport, if not all the hype that comes with it.

    Even someone who knows hardly anything about the 1940s will probably know that roughly half of it was taken up with the Second World War and that the other half was a time of austerity and continued rationing, but also a time of hope. The fashion of the time reflected both of these phenomena – material was is short supply and was generally quite unadorned; but women found ways of making it glamorous and as much fun to wear as possible. This was still a time when most women would wear a skirt or a dress – and sleep in a nightie. Trousers were certainly worn by working women, and during the war they were increasingly doing manual labour such as factory, construction and farm work, and it is possibly this experience that started the ball rolling to the point where a woman wearing trousers no longer looks remotely strange.
     
    One of the things that first strikes you when you see the typical 1940s dress is that it was made to fit the body snugly, with minimal frills and flaps. The shortage of material is often given as the reason for this style, but dresses from the pre-war period were still petty narrow, although they were generally ankle-length. So the typical knee-length, figure-hugging 1940s dress was influenced both by the prevailing styles and the inevitable shortages. Perhaps with hindsight of what happened next – the 1950s – it could be argued that this style was enforced, waiting to pop like a bottle of champagne, but women probably didn't realise it at the time.
     
    So the classic look for a 40s dress was trim, straight to the point and a little bit utilitarian. Sleeves and skirt both tended to end at the elbows and knees respectively, and it would not have been all that unusual to have pockets on the sides, at hip level. Colouring would not necessarily have been as drab as you might imagine – dyes were available – and pale blues, greens and reds would have been common. That said, if you are planning on scouring the vintage clothing stores to get a dress with that off-duty wartime feel so real that it sounds like the Glenn Miller Orchestra, something in the military shades – greens, olives, blues and khakis – is essential.
     
    As the 1940s drew to a close, the shape of things to come in women's dress was becoming a little more noticeable. Dresses were definitely getting a little longer, although they did not reach 1930s lengths. And details such as pleats, which can double the amount or material required, began to work their way into the styles of the day.
     
    It is worth remembering also that for most working-class women, dresses would not have been bought off the shelf – they would have been hand-made with great care. This means that clothes would have been a perfect fit for their makers, but it also means that care must be taken when seeking genuine vintage items when shopping today. But when you finally find that dress that completely befits this hugely influential decade in women's fashion, you won't look back.

    Tweed. It's impossible to say the word without perfect elocution and slightly raised eyebrows. It's a material that instantly makes you think of days out shooting grouse, riding a horse, hacking away with a golf club (in the days before bad taste became de rigueur) or being worn by a nineteenth-century crime-solving genius and resident of 221B Baker Street. What is peculiar about this particular material is that it is associated with upper- and middle-class luxury yet is relatively coarse, unlike most luxury fabrics which are noted for their smoothness, softness, beauty or sheer amount of hard work required to craft it.
     
    The clue to tweed's popularity among society's elite is in the activities for which it was worn. Outdoor pursuits in the British cold seasons required just enough wrapping up to beat the harshest chills, remain flexible and maintain one's manliness, and the tweed jacket fitted the bill perfectly. The material originated in the Scottish borders, where a warm and reasonably water-resistant fabric would have been required by anyone venturing out between late autumn and early spring. But such was the faith that people placed in the insulating qualities of tweed that early mountaineering expeditions often relied on tweed jackets to cheat the freezing winds, often with tragic results.
     
    The image of tweed eventually would lead to its adoption by the great unwashed, perhaps originally with irony but latterly with more of a sense of style. Tweed jackets made an appearance as a purely fashion item during the 1980s among the "Sloane Rangers", upper class types who certainly would not have been seen halfway up a mountain, but quite liked passing themselves off as outdoor types, as long as "outdoor" happened to be in Chelsea. And inevitably the look would filter through to all of society as riding chic took hold in the same decade. (Out in the countryside the toffs looked on aghast and picked up the phone to call their nearest waxed jacket supplier.)
     
    As a fashion item, the tweed jacket really holds its own, quite literally. Its coarseness is key to its ability to maintain its tailored shape whatever is thrown at it, and that's pretty much a guarantee of popularity in some quarters. The resultant smartness and the iconic tweed twine still conjure up images of the sporting life, and for experts in juxtaposition this makes it perfect city wear. If you really want to push the boat out, it is essential that the jacket has leather patched on the elbows and shoulders, although designers have had plenty of fun with these original features and the patches can now be found in all manner of colours, patterns and materials.
     
    So whether you're looking for the authentic Harris tweed blazer or a modern urban interpretation, the past century will offer many a fine example of ingenuity and style. Vintage clothing stores are a good place to start looking, and if you can pull off a clipped English accent without laughing, you're going to pull off the look no problem.

    When we need cracks in our walls filled, we might call a plasterer or just nip to the DIY store and try it ourselves. But the outside-to-in approach wouldn't work with the wrinkles and folds in our skin, for a multitude of potentially ghastly reasons. When we need a little filling in our skin, we need to use an inside-to-out approach, and that's dermal filling in a nutshell.
     
    Dermal fillers are injections of substances into our aging and weathered bits (most commonly on our faces) to effectively inflate and tighten the affected areas, giving a more youthful and vibrant appearance.
     
    Lips are a particularly popular target, as they play a massive part in the overall balance of our faces and they are known to thin as we age and produce less collagen. Humans have been trying to draw attention to their lips since time immemorial, and no stylish woman will leave the house without her favourite lipstick in her tiny bag. Applying lipstick will certainly accentuate our lips, but to make them fuller in three dimensions we need to take that extra step; and now it's within most people's budget, dermal fillers are proving a popular option.
     
    There are a few words of warning, however. Without naming names, we've all seen some of the disastrous attempts at lip enhancement on the gossip pages, and the effects can be irreversible or extremely difficult to reverse. One mistake people often make, unfortunately with the full backing of their cosmetic surgeons, is to try and fill their lips or remove their wrinkles in one big leap. Responsible surgeries usually advise against this, and recommend taking it easy, making the reduction a gradual process, perhaps taking months or even years to achieve. A consensus is also developing that temporary dermal fillers, which need to be topped up every six months or so, are much safer than permanent ones, which can actually bind to the skin tissue and become extremely difficult to remove.
     
    This cautious approach is sensible on many levels. First, it lets you effectively try out the procedure and the appearance and then decide if you want to continue with it or to let nature take its course. It also gives your skin time to adjust to the less drastic changes. And a subtler change will probably be less noticeable to friends, family and colleagues, which is important to some people. There are plenty of social reasons why we might want to appear younger, but taking perhaps a decade off our fifty years is much easier to pull off than trying to look twenty-one again.
     
    Another important thing to consider is that dermal fillers are more or less unregulated in the UK. The substances sold to clinics by pharmaceutical companies will therefore owe as much to the skill of their salesmen as they do to their clinical effectiveness and safety, so before embarking on any treatment make sure you know exactly what substance is being used and do a little research into it. A very good guide is the American Food and Drug Administration, the FDA. The Americans seem to have a much more grown-up approach to cosmetic surgery than do Brits, and they have tested and approved a number of dermal fillers that is much smaller than the range available.
     
    In summary, take dermal filling slowly and sensibly, follow all the best advice you can find, and seek out approved practitioners using authorised and tested fillers. Remember that botched work can be irreversible, so a little homework in advance can save many tears – as well as years.

    We're all familiar with the narrative of denim, of how it became the clothing of choice of the workforce who made an industrialised nation of the USA in a couple of generations. We're also familiar with the way denim jeans became an item of fashion, rebellion and rock'n'roll garb that has remained with us to this day. Quite impressive for what is essentially a material; folklore doesn't treat its brothers and sisters so kindly. Corduroy? Polyester? Cheesecloth? They don't even come close to the mythological power of denim. Denim remains popular because it's a working class staple that's perfectly at home on the pampered bodies of celebrities and modern royalty – only the brands can betray the amount of money spent on them; otherwise denim defies class boundaries.
     
    And denim is used for much more than jeans and jackets, too. How about that four-season classic, the denim skirt? It's just as perfect for pulling on after a night out as it was for going out on the pull the night before. It's a casual classic, whether worn long or short, round the waist or low slung, and it's a simple wardrobe essential that will always be there when an emergency get-up needs to be assembled.
     
    A particularly inventive chapter of the denim skirt's story has been in their reclaiming from other denim garments. It's difficult to imagine creating a denim jacket from cast-off jeans, unless a particularly patchwork effect is being sought, but as the skirt is basically a tailored rectangle of material, it's possible to make a skirt or four from any pair of jeans or denim jacket.
     
    Sometimes the skirt is made using any available featureless area of denim, but there's no reason for this to be the case; a seemingly random (but actually carefully chosen) section incorporating angled seams and pockets from the donor garment can be really striking. And with a little cutting and sewing, a skirt can even be constructed from the top part of a pair of jeans, giving a skirt with ready made fly, belt-loops and pockets – essentially a pair of cut-down shorts minus the crotch. Hey presto! A designer label denim skirt, only designed by you. The designers themselves have got in on the act, not surprisingly, and skirts that look home-made can be bought off the shelf. The frayed-edge look certainly adds to this improvised air, and it has become part of the language of denim skirts, whether new or self-cut.
     
    So whether it's holidaying, nightclubbing, festival-going or nipping to the shops, the denim skirt will never leave you feeling under-dressed. With tights or bare-legs, boots, shoes or sandals, it just works, making the wearer look fashionably laid-back without looking slovenly thanks to denim's toughness and shape.
     
    Have a look around the vintage clothing stores and you'll find some fascinating denim skirts. The knee-length pre-stressed ones are perfectly functional and serve a multitude of perfectly functional purposes. But for that cheeky, playful and ready-for-anything look, check out the wealth of custom-made and faux-custom-made ones (there might be some kind of internal contradiction in that last definition, but you get the idea). Call it recession chic or call it green fashion; these masterpieces will never let you down. And when you're through with them, simply cut them into headbands and neckerchiefs.
