You and your doctor must work as a team. To ensure that you receive the best possible healthcare, it is important to assume an active role and be an engaged patient. One way to do so is to take full advantage of every office visit. Time with your physician is valuable, so in addition to listening carefully to his or her advice, be sure to ask questions, discuss any new symptoms or problems, and share your concerns.

    Before Your Appointment

For most people, going to the doctor is at least mildly stressful. The added pressure of being sick or in pain will only compound the anxiety you may already be feeling. Nervousness can get in the way of clear thinking and careful listening, so be sure to bring along a notepad and pen to record your doctor's instructions and take notes you can review later, when you are feeling less stressed. If you think it would be useful, ask a trusted family member or friend to accompany you and serve as an "extra set of ears," perhaps ask questions you may not think of, and offer advice and opinions, if needed.

Preparation can be a powerful stress-reliever, so you may find it helpful to think of your visit in terms of a business meeting for which you need to prepare. Before the appointment, make a list of all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements, and other natural remedies. Create a synopsis of your and your family's health history, including information about past surgeries, illnesses, allergies, and other medical conditions. Bring this information with you to the appointment.

Finally, you'll want to be fully prepared to discuss your present condition and symptoms – in order of importance, because your time with your doctor will be limited – and any other healthcare you are currently receiving. The usefulness of lists and notes cannot be overemphasized!

    During Your Appointment

When you are face-to-face with your doctor, clearly explain the reason for your visit, your current condition and symptoms, and any changes you may have recently noticed. If you don't understand something he or she tells you, don't be afraid to request further explanation. Also, ask for written directions, brochures, and websites to supplement the information your doctor provides verbally. If you have any concerns about your ability to follow your doctor's instructions, be sure to let him or her know.

If your physician suggests a treatment, inquire about your options, and ask why he or she is recommending this particular treatment for you. If you need a test, ask where it will be performed, what will be done, how you will feel during the test and afterward, what you need to do to prepare, and when and how you will get your results. If your doctor prescribes a new medication, request the spelling and ask why you need it, how and when you should take it, if there are any side effects, what to do if you experience side effects, and when you can stop taking the medication. Also, be sure to tell him or her if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.

    After Your Appointment

Before you leave the office, find out whether you need to schedule a follow-up appointment. Follow your doctor's instructions to keep your health on track. If, after you return home, you feel confused about something the doctor said or do not understand your next steps, call the office right away to request clarification. You should also call if your symptoms worsen, if you experience side effects from medication, or to request test results.

By taking these steps prior to a medical appointment, you can make the most of your time with your healthcare practitioners. A good doctor-patient relationship is vital to your health and well-being. As an active member of your healthcare team, you will improve the quality, safety, and effectiveness of your care.

If you suffer from a herniated disc in the neck, finding treatment is undoubtedly at the forefront of your thoughts. Yet before you jump right into a treatment plan you read online or heard about from your neighbor, it is exceedingly important that you visit a doctor to not only diagnose the source, cause, and severity of your problem, but also to ensure that you take the right approach to treatment. While there are all sorts of ways to go about addressing the symptoms that arise from a herniated disc, the wrong method may prove entirely ineffective, or worse yet, exacerbate your discomfort.

A herniated disc refers to a condition where the intervertebral disc that normally cushions and supports adjacent vertebrae develops a tear in the disc wall, allowing the nuclear material to escape the disc and extrude into the spinal canal. While this may sound like a potentially serious problem, in reality, it is extremely common and in some instances isn't even symptomatic. However, when this herniated disc material comes in contact with a nerve root or even the spinal cord, a number of symptoms may develop, ranging from local, chronic pain, to numbness and tingling or discomfort that extends into the extremities. As a result, effective treatment for a herniated disc in the neck is usually contingent on alleviating the nerve compression that arises as a result of the disc rupture (although in some instances the tear itself may cause local pain).

One of the first things to understand about herniated disc treatment is that it varies widely from patient to patient. This condition is quite common in the neck because of the burden placed on the cervical spine by the weight of the skull and the flexibility of the region, and as a result, a herniated disc can ostensibly develop in people of all ages. As a result, treatment for a young athlete, for instance, will be much different than for an elderly patient.

Generally speaking, however, herniated disc treatment is almost always first attempted nonsurgically, by using a prescribed regimen of several weeks or even months of conservative techniques. There are all sorts of potential treatments that can be used in this process in order to manage the patient's pain and also improve or maintain spinal stability. For example, you might be recommended over-the-counter (or prescription) nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to help reduce inflammation in the neck. Many other individuals benefit from specific low-impact exercises or stretching exercises (such as Pilates or yoga) as a means to strengthen the neck and alleviate some of the strain placed on the cervical spine. Yet, it is also extremely important that no exercises are attempted without the approval of a specialist or personal trainer, because it is extremely easy to make matters worse by overdoing it at the gym.

Many individuals also turn to complementary or alternative medicine to assist in their herniated disc treatment. Options such as deep tissue massage, acupuncture, aromatherapy, holistic natural oils, and other similar treatments are quite popular. Finally, in the event that several weeks or months of conservative treatment fail to deliver the results the patient requires, there are several surgical procedures that might be considered, although this is usually a last resort.

When it comes to phones in the United States, you'll have to fork over a great deal of money to get one. Even if you wanted to go with a prepaid option or one that doesn't require a high entry fee, you'll end up having to pay a great deal monthly. That's all about to change, especially for those that are living in the state of California. Assurance Wireless is rolling out completely free cell phone service and it's starting to create a stir amongst those that are looking to cut their communication bill and still get high quality service.

For those that are tired of having to deal with the many issues that come with cellular phone services, you'll be happy to know that there is a solution that is not going to cost you at all. For customers that become eligible for this option, you'll receive a free phone, 250 free minutes, and 250 free texts on a monthly basis. There is no major catch here, you'll be able to utilize this service with out any major strings and you will not have to fork over any additional payments unless you want more than the basics.

For those that are looking for larger plans with unlimited amounts of options, there are some great prices that can be added to the free version. You can even add Virgin Mobile cards or even pay with third party money solutions. Those that aren't keen on paying anything, will find that you don't have to, if you stick with the initial baseline options, you'll have free service that is being subsidized by the United States Government so that anyone that is not able to afford the luxury of a cellular device, can get one with no additional fees.

It's important to note that not everyone will qualify for this program. There are certain parameters that need to be met before you can get your hands on this option. Not only that, not every state will allow people to get this, as there are only 33 states that allow you to utilize the Assurance Wireless option to get communication devices. Checking with your state will help you determine what the requirements are, but one thing is for sure, California is on the list of states that will soon roll out completely free cell phone services.

For those that are not keen on this option and want more than just the free options, plans are as low as $30 a month for unlimited talk, text and web, and smaller tiered increments for less minutes and text. The bottom line here is that affordable communication for the masses is going to be something that will definitely be important to have, and it's a reality that most may not know about. For those that are looking to get a phone, but don't have the means to pay a great deal of money, the time is now to look into this amazing option. Don't pay too much, look at the plans offered by Assurance Wireless, especially the free options, today.

For many people, the high cost of cellular communications has left them in the proverbial dark. They have been relegated to dealing with a variety of issues that make it difficult to communicate with others. Not only that, many low income families can't even talk to each other when there's an emergency abounding. Conservatives seem to think that this is somewhat fair in a free market society, as those that can afford to have a cell phone buy them and those that don't, simply don't have a way to talk to anyone. Unfortunately that is not fair and that's why the Lifeline Assistance idea started to come into the picture.

Four major carriers have united with the United States Government to help with the communication gap that is currently being experienced by those that are less fortunate. Those that cannot afford the high cost of a digital cellular phone can now acquire one for free, and get service for free as well. This might sound like a crazy plot, but it's 100% accurate and true. You'll find that this will allow anyone to move forward with relative ease and get the proper communication device that is standard today.

Conservatives often times want to pull away the government's assistance on the less fortunate because they do not believe in handouts. But when they start to argue their point, counterpoints are easily brought up that defeat their ideas. For instance, if a person can't make or receive phone calls, how are they to get a job? Your standard job application today has a form that you have to fill out in order to get any major position and in that form it has a line for a phone number. With the ubiquitous nature of cellular communications, no one really has a landline, and even that costs a great deal of money these days.

It's with that in mind that people can now simply move forward and get a free phone. The free phone plans are simple, and they are budgeted for use within the parameters of certain regulations. That means that not just anyone can procure one of these devices. In order to qualify for this option, you have to be under the poverty line and have proof of that notion. Not just anyone can waltz into a provider and get the service, which is why this is an amazing option for those in need.

Pundits and naysayers don't realize that in these modern times, it's crucial to have the option to call someone at any given moment. This is especially true in times of emergency when help is needed and 911 isn't available otherwise. Conservatives can attack all they want, but the current landscape has already shifted away from what they want. With more and more people waking up to the free options, the government continues to do good by those in need. If you or someone you know is in need, it's imperative to note that you can get a free cellular phone, 250 free minutes, and get networking to move forward and into a better financial state.

When it comes to getting cellular communication up and running, the average person has the money to spare, even if it's a limited option that doesn't cost a whole lot. There are a lot of great plans that are available to the average person, but that doesn't necessarily bode well for those that don't have income at all. For instance, if you're homeless or you're unemployed and do not have any money coming in, you may not be able to get back on your feet without having a cell phone. This harsh reality hits those that are homeless very hard, and getting forward momentum can seem like insurmountable odds are being engaged. That is all changing as there is no free cell phones for the homeless and it's coming from Assurance Wireless.

Assurance Wireless has been pushing their free plan for anyone that is part of a low income bracket or is dealing with a bout of homelessness and is in need of a quality cellular phone provider for a low cost. This might seem like something that is difficult to manage, but it's actually easier than you might think. There are a few things that you'll need to understand about this program before taking advantage of it.

First and foremost, it's imperative to realize that this is not for everyone. It's for those that meet the parameters of homeless or very low income. That means that the average joe isn't going to be able to go to Assurance Wireless and get a phone for free. Certain parameters need to be met, but once they are met with proper order, the phone and services is subsidized by the government. That's right, it's 100% free without an additional cost at all. The plan is limited to 250 minutes of talk, and 250 text messages. Additional options are available through a variety of resources.

For those that find 250 minutes too limited, you can add minutes through Virgin mobile refill cards and utilize third party payment options like PayPal to add minutes. That might be advantageous over time, but the initial offerings are 100% free and are not substandard network options at all.

Right now this programs is only available in 33 states, and doesn't cover 100% of the population. Those that are looking for low cost cellular phones are not going to qualify if they don't match the criteria of being homeless or extremely low income. This is really meant to help those that are actively trying to get work, or back out of a negative situation into a positive one. Often time's employers, even for rudimentary jobs, need to contact someone, and a free cell phone beats the payphones that are not always available. For those that are not doing so well financially, this is a saving grace that technology providers are noting as great. In the case of free cell phones for the homeless, Assurance Wireless is making strides to assist, and it comes with no strings attached. This is definitely a helping hand in communication to those that need it most.

For millions of people the latest and greatest gadgets are out of reach. This includes cellular communication devices that require a great deal of money to have. Think about the cost of the average phone that you would normally get from a carrier and you'll have to spend upwards of hundreds of dollars in order to have the privilege of communication with others. This can be painstaking, especially for those that have limited resources and are dealing with financial problems. Even though many of the poorest people around the nation can't get access to the higher end options, the government is changing the notion of communications for anyone less fortunate than those that can buy phones on their own. With the help of Reachout Wireless, government funded cell phone programs abound to help out those that need communication devices for free.

This might sound crazy, but those that are dealing with poverty can now get a free phone, and 250 free minutes. That is not a hoax and it is not something that will end up costing more money in the long run, it is absolutely free and is not at all costly. You'll find that this is something that most people don't really know about, which is why it's important to get the word out about this incredible opportunity to get a phone and some minutes.

Some people might assume that there are strings attached, but the fact of the matter is quite opposite. You'll find that the cost is nothing, absolutely nothing to have this. The requirements are low income, and some other factors that differ from state to state. For those that fit the parameters and can show proof or lack of income, the phones can be utilized just like many of the latest and greatest devices you see advertised on a regular basis.

The cost of cell phone ownership and use is quite high in these modern times, which is why the government is stepping in to help those that need communication options for work, school, and beyond. It's important to note that not everyone will qualify for this option, as there are some that are not at the poverty level that is required by most states. It's also important to note that not all states offer this service, which is something that most don't realize.

Look for Reachout Wireless in your state and read carefully the requirements to get one of these free options. There are no strings attached here, there's no major bait and switch, and you won't regret the option to move forward with the glorious world of communication. This is subsidized by the government and they even allow for more minutes to be purchased at a low rate, so that if 250 minutes aren't enough, more are available at an increased value. There's no reason why anyone shouldn't have the opportunity to have a phone, especially in these times of uncertainty where emergencies need immediate attention. The cost is nothing, there are no strings, and it's provided by the government, making this a great option for those less fortunate.

One of the biggest changes to come to modern times is that of the communication process that we all go through. Instead of the traditional methods of calling someone, you can easily text them or call their cellular phone and have contact with them at any given moment. That has definitely changed from the days where you would have to utilize a pay phone somewhere to get a hold of someone, and hopefully they were even at home to receive the phone call. Then of course there were pagers, but today, communication is so much easier than ever before. It's with that in mind that millions of people have gone to great lengths to procure one of the latest gadgets in these modern times, and that can be quite costly. However, there is another way to go at it, and that's to get the government to pay for your cell phone service.

Most people don't really understand how this is possible, and that's ok, it's a new way to get 100% free service and a phone, through Safelink Wireless. This company is one of the many companies that are being subsidized by the United States Government to help those that need a phone, get one, and pay the service as well. This might sound too good to be true, and for some it is, but not if you meet the requirements. There are certain parameters that you'll have to adhere to in order to get this option, but it's not that difficult.

In order to get a free phone and service, you'll have to be of a low income background. Families that have a low income are eligible to get this option free and clear. Every state has a different set of rules, but this is one of the basic formats that you'll find. The cost will be zero, allowing you to move forward with a no cost solution to communication. The phone comes free and every month you'll be able to use 250 minutes without paying a dime.

For those that are looking for more than just the initial minutes that are given, additional minutes can be added for a low cost. The process of getting this relies on paperwork and proof of income, but other than that, it is highly possible to let the government get the phone bill instead of you and your family. This is a program that has become available across 33 states and continues to deliver service to those that need it the most.

Millions of people around the world are in search of low cost phone service, and many times they are turned away because of the high cost involved. For those that are tired of spending a great deal of money on phone service, this option is going to be amazing. All you have to do is qualify, and you'll get what most people pay upwards of $150 a month for. No contracts, no bait and switch, this is 100% real and available to those that don't have the means to get a plan any other way.

Most people believe that carpet cleaning is only for aesthetics, but there are plenty of reasons that having a clean carpet is important. After investing in a good carpet or rug, it is very important to protect this investment with regular rug cleaning. Making sure that there isn't dirt and gritty soil in the carpet when you walk on it will ensure that the carpet lasts much longer. Finally, the carpets in your home act as air and soil filter and regular carpet cleaning can prevent the much more costly carpet repair through excess damage. When you take all of these factors into consideration it often becomes obvious that hiring a professional carpet and rug cleaning service is the way to go.

    Protecting your investment

People don't often factor in the proper maintenance costs, both in time and money, that are required for good carpet cleaning. Making sure that you keep your carpets clean will ensure that you can protect this investment and reduce the amount that you have to spend on carpet and rug repair. Carpeting can be a huge investment and the manufacturers realize this, as they recommend for maximum longevity, that you use a professional carpet and rug cleaning service at least once per year.

    Ingrain soil can destroy

Dirt and soil are a carpet or rug's worst enemy because it can cause damage with every footstep. The added weight on the dirt can have sharp edges that cut the carpet fibers and cause premature wear and tear. Carpet is meant to be walked on, but not having a well cleaned carpet will lead to more costly rug and carpet repairs than are necessary.

    Air filtration system

Carpeting can act as an air filtration system as the dust and dirt particles that are in the air settle into the rug. Even if you take good precautions not to drag any dirt onto the carpet, the air will deposit many particles, such as pollen, bacteria, soils, and dust. Making sure that you enlist a professional rug and carpet cleaning service will allow your carpet to last as long as it was designed

With all of this in mind there is no doubt that carpet cleaning is an important thing that you have to do, but should you try to do it yourself or hire a professional carpet and rug cleaning service? There are plenty of options for you to do it yourself such as renting a machine from the grocery store or even spending the money to buy one, but often these end up causing more headaches as you are not properly trained to clean carpets. Hiring a professional carpet and rug cleaning service will elevate the worries about it being done right, so that you can maintain your carpets and reduce the costly carpet and rug repair bills. Carpet cleaning is important to not only keeping your house looking great but also maintaining the air quality, and ultimately your quality of life.

As the lyrics to the infamous Kiss song, Schools Out for Summer are blaring on the intercom at your child's school, kids everywhere are headed home to rest, relax and annoy the stew out of their parents. The current economic conditions have many families opting to stay home this summer rather than visit pricey resorts and finding ways to avoid the "I'm bored" chorus is critical to parental sanity. The good news is that this nosedive in available funding and excess time together can actually bring families back to their roots and have you and your children enjoying some of the simple pleasures in life.

The first advice is of course, to come up with some summer time rules. Give them a few extra chores around the house so that you don't end up becoming a 24-hour maid regretting your decision to not send the kids to camp. This is a good time to start even young children making their own beds in the morning and learning how to fill up a bowl of cereal or heat up a pop-tart when they are hungry. In the long run, your introduction to real life chores like laundry sorting will help you out and transition your kids to independent and self-reliant creatures.

Step two is to come up with a very brief and comprehensive plan of things that you can do on a budget. Allow each child in your home to fill out some scrap pieces of paper with ideas of activities they want to do. Your youngest may write spend a day at the jump-house while your older kids may favor a day at a local water park. Decide that each week – you will do one activity, saving the most costly ones for a special time. Perhaps rather than paying kids an allowance for their extra chores, you can plan an end of summer bash at a local water park should they earn the privilege.

Encourage your kids to think of local things to do. So many parents are caught up in vacations that require extensive travel when a host of activities (many free) exist right outside your back door. Check out the state parks, many of which offer swimming holes and hiking trails and plan day trips that will acquaint your child with their home state. Also, look for some inexpensive camps that may be offered by the schools which can keep your kids interested or peak an interest in sports, arts or crafts.

Another great way to enjoy the summer is to look for any of the millions of outdoor concerts that are often held. Whether you live in a big city or not, chances are that some nearby city or town is hosting festivals and concerts that are free to the public. Treating your kids to snow cones and funnel cakes while you are there can be inexpensive and make the evening special. Plus, it may foster a love in music and have a family atmosphere that can truly bring you and your kids together.

Since swimming is always a great summer activity, look for swimming holes in your area. You might be surprised to find the immense amount of lake beaches (which are often safer for children) or local pools where you can join for nominal summer fees. This will keep your kids cool, allow you time to relax as well as provide plenty of exercise and time for socializing. Local libraries also have lots of summer reading activities that include entertainment for children of all ages. Many of their schoolmates may be attending these as well.

Speaking of friends, talk to your children's friends and their parents to plan sleepovers in the backyard. If you are close with them, take turns organizing day trips together for the kids so that the kids will form bonding friendships and you will have some distracting conversation besides that of your children to engage in. If you live in a neighborhood, even planning neighborhood activities like yard sales, bizarres or old fashion street fairs can be a great way to get the garage cleaned out and keep the kids busy over the summer time.

Other cost friendly ideas that will help you to enjoy your summer without busting your budget is to take weekend camping trips. Visit family that lives out of town and explore their hometown for a change of pace. Or, take on a home improvement project around the house that the kids can take part in. Summer is the perfect time to redecorate your tweens room, add a porch to your home, or build a playground of your own. Not to mention, turn your bedroom into retreat for you and your spouse to enjoy in private.

You don't have to spend money to make family memories. Often by thinking of simple activities that don't cost a bundle, you will actually be able to enjoy summer vacation with your children without feeling burdened to have the time of your life. Getting back to the basics and simplifying things may be just the way to reconnect with the kids and make this the most memorable summer ever. Of course, buying yourself sound high quality headphones and an Ipod can help you get through it as well.

You got married. You bought the perfect house in the nicest subdivision you could afford. You got your first brand new car, finished paying off your college loans, and got accustomed to eating dinner with your spouse wearing sweatpants and t-shirts. Then, taking things to the next – expected phase of life, you had a child. Or two, or three.

And then suddenly, you and your spouse realized that leaving your child with a day care center or sending them to preschool when they couldn't even walk yet, caused you to feel a tremendous amount of fear. Next thing you know, you are giving up the career you spend the first half of your life building. You are trading in the sports car for a bottom of the line mini-van and wearing clothes that have been out of fashion for a few years. Yes, you have decided to have the one income, stay at home parent household that makes up approximately 46% of all households in the United States.

Years ago, one income, one stay at home parent households were the norm. The biggest difference today is that men are joining the ranks of stay at home parents. What many married people do not realize is that this living arrangement can be extremely hard on the marriage. Not at first of course. But in the long run, having just one working parent can cause a tremendous amount of financial and emotional pressure on the couple, with both partners feeling resentful of the other for one thing or another.

According to statistics, being a stay at home parent actually increases your chance of divorce in the first 11 years of marriage. However, most people in a single working family where one parent stays home with the kids aren't able to divorce as soon as they realize the marriage is over, because of the financial situation. And many stay unhappy for a long period of time.

Often, the parent who stays home feels trapped in the marriage. They lose their financial autonomy and can be likened to the status of a child. This parent, who normally does all the shopping and takes care of things around the house can feel undermined and lose their sense of self – whether they are man or woman. And since they seem to spend the bulk of the money paying bills, and buying groceries – the working parent often resents them for 'spending the money,' even if it is evident that it's not on themselves. Plus the stay at home parent can feel isolated, while their partner is out earning a living and socializing with adults in the workplace.

Additionally, the stay at home parent may resent becoming the 'do all maid' for everyone in the home. Sure, it's easier for the parent who stays home to tend to the house and all the things that implies. However, eventually the other parent may start taking advantage of the situation or taking it for granted. And this too causes resentment. For one thing, if the stay at home parent voices their opinion about feeling like the maid in the house – they risk sounding unhappy with the situation. And so most say nothing.

The bottom line is that choosing to be a stay at home parent can have consequences on the marriage. Even if both people agree that the kids need a parent to be at home, the long term ramifications can get out of hand if a couple doesn't feel comfortable communicating about the challenges. Additionally, in order for this type of relationship to work, both partners have to be respectful of one another's 'job,' and responsibilities. They have to both agree in the beginning that each is as important as the other is, and that not one-half of the whole plays a more important or vital role. And, the two of you have to discuss money ahead of time, so that both of you feel comfortable spending and making financial decisions as necessary.

When a couple decides its time for one parent to stay home, it is important to sit down and have an open dialogue about expectations and the division of responsibilities. From time to time, the two of you will need to talk to make sure that things are going well for the two of you in case changes need to be made. Most importantly, you have to understand that just because one parent stays home doesn't mean that they bear the full brunt of responsibility for the children and all that that encompasses.

As long as the two of you remain open and honest, you can make the dream of the white picket fence come true. Btu remember, having one parent work while the other stays home with the kiddos can truly put pressure on the marriage in more ways than you might think.

So, you want to have a baby?

There comes an age and time in life when every person coupled or otherwise considers the question of whether or not to have a child. For some people, this is a no-brainer and they know from the time they are very young that children are in their future. For others, it is once that causes distress, concerns and worries because the urge is just not there. And still, for others it becomes an impossibility or an accidental decision. Having a baby is a huge step in life often seen as the entrance to the threshold of adulthood. There is lots of pressure, silent and outward, on people to have a baby and it is almost as if choosing otherwise is some sort of abomination.

In today's world where men and women are becoming more equal, financially independent and are encouraged to develop passions outside of hearth and home the sheer thought of having a baby can be disgruntling. Regardless of what you think, what you have been told or what your imagination dreams of your future to be – having a child changes everything in more ways than imaginable. Some of those ways are more positive than you thought possible and others can be frustrating leaving parents to feel as if they have just entered a life sentence. Which in so many ways, they have.

The crazy thing about the decision to have children is it isn't one that can be made early in life. It can't be a set as a feasible goal because life changes so quickly. One minute you are in high school, college and pursuing a career-thinking babies are the enemy and a year later you are so deeply in love that you can't imagine not sharing this special feat with that someone special. Furthermore once you make the decision to have a child and follow through, there is absolutely no turning back to the life you left. It is an all or nothing endeavor.

For intensive purposes, it is probably best to weigh the pros and cons of having children before you embark on the journey. Unfortunately, it is like concocting a travel plan to Pluto, because you don't know the real pros and cons of having children until you do so. How could you, really? Even people who have children can't really find the words or pinpoint the feelings of watching a birth or witnessing a first step. Having children is one of those things in life that is indefinable and felt differently by every person. It is the inhuman mixture of love and passion, fear and worry, excitement and anxiety, frustration and stress.

At the risk of sounding trite, the best way to decide whether or not having children is your destiny or not is to allow your destiny to just unfold. Keeping an open mind and realizing that should the embodiment of a child be right for you it will show itself to you at some point ensures you will not be pressured, disappointed or anxious about it. In other words, never say never and don't place all your genetic eggs in one basket. When the time is right to have children, whether on purpose or accidentally, it will happen. Sometimes the best way to choose whether or not to become a parent and to decide if you are ready for it or not is to face the music when it begins to play.

Contrary to what you may believe in this moment, ten years ago or five years from now – having children may or may not be important in your life. Even the best laid plans can fail which means that the little pink line that says a baby is coming can and does happen to people who are both sides of the fence when it comes to this issue.

Your ultimate decision and desire to have children is one that only you can make. Having faith that the right things in your life will happen, in the proper order and that whatever your future holds, either with children or otherwise, will be happy and abundant is the best stance to take on the issue. Who knows, your decisions and thoughts are as uncertain as summer rains in the dessert and you just never really know all the answers in life for sure.

With Spring Break right around the corner and the economy still struggling to improve taking vacations for the average family can seem like a luxury from the past. While some families are still heading to Disney World or the nearest Beach, you may not be able to afford it and you may wonder how others can and feel badly about your lack of means. First of all, don't be swept under the wave of peer pressure and realize that many people who appear to be "rich" are in actuality credit card millionaires. In fact, the book Staycation was written clearly for the people like yourself, too poor to take a vacation and too bored to stay home. However, the message is clear. You can set up a vacation of your own without dropping thousands of bucks and take family time without leaving home.

The idea of staycation, or having a family holiday on a budget is to save your pennies for something exciting in the future. If you commit to taking budget friendly family vacations now, in a year or so, you will have saved enough to take that child friendly cruise or trip to Hawaii that you have always wanted to take. The other thing to consider, especially with children, is that often they don't do well away from home for long periods of time and taking a leap of faith to plan something extravagant without 'practicing' can lead to a disappointing experience for the whole family.

Start your budget friendly family outing with a local excursion. The benefits are that the car ride is short, no flights to worry about and if things go array or your child ends up with the Murphy's law stomach flu you will be able to come right back home. Another hint is to take two vehicles. This way if your spouse and older children are fairing well camping at the lake but you and the baby are miserable, you can head for the comforts of home. Camping is always a budget friendly way to go. Even if you don't have a fancy camper you can rent one fairly cheap, borrow or rent a cabin and even purchase a decent tent to serve as your short term home away from home. If you aren't the camping type, then start researching day trip vacations you can take close to home. Chances are you haven't explored your own backyard thoroughly and you may be surprised to find that some exciting venues exist in your home state. Horse riding adventures, local theme parks, interesting historical sites, hiking tours, river rafting trips - the point is that the bulk of family expenses can come from lodging expenses. Cutting trips short, finding cheaper options or taking day trips can slash your costs considerably.

One of the most expensive aspects of vacationing is fulfilling the eating requirements of a family. Your first tip is to stop being a sucker and set yourself a budget. If you are visiting a water park or touristy spot – don't feel obligated to buy the knick knack souvenir cups and gadgets that will end up in the trash or broken before you even make it home. Why would anyone pay $10 for a soda? Instead, go to your dollar store and find some snazzy cups for your children. Do a little creative grocery shopping purchasing items that you normally don't buy. Pack a cooler complete with lunches, pop, lemonade, fruit and snacks to keep your kids from having the munchies and make the radical decision that you aren't going to spend hundreds of dollars on over priced, under cooked and unhealthy foods. End of story. You can take the money you saved and go out for one very nice meal and still be ahead of the game.

There are plenty of ways to save money and take the vacation that you need to recharge your batteries. Rather than thinking a vacation is only 'real' if you spend thousands of dollars start simplifying what it takes to help you relax. Here are some other ideas.

    • Sign the family up for a stint volunteering in another town. You will be giving and getting much more than a vacation.

    • Travel with other families and split the costs. The kids can cozy up on the floor in sleeping bags to save on lodging.

    • Take a drive. Set out with the kids to tour the country. Mark spots along the way that you want to stop at.

    • Shop for bargains. Many vacation hot spots are offering major coupons that allow you to stay for free, travel for free or eat for free. Contact venues specifically and ask for further discounts.

    • Travel during "off season." Check rates and plan your trips during non-busy times of the year.

    • Take 3-day weekends and work your vacation week. Rather than take a whole week off with pay, take a Friday at a time and work the other 4 days. You will earn more money and be able to take more trips.

    • Stay with family. Visit the grandparents and take trips to new destinations.

Another important aspect to taking family holidays on a budget is to be realistic. Don't use plastic to pay for your outings. Change your mind and add some creativity to your plans. You would be surprised how easily you can change a few days at home, visiting local venues and splurging a bit more than usual into staycations that will become a meaningful part of your family's memory.

Perhaps one of the most common illnesses your child will catch in their early school years are the hundreds of varieties of stomach viruses. They normally come on very quickly and involve either diarrhea, vomiting or if your really unlucky both. The only good thing about a stomach virus is that they are normally short lived, lasting around 24 hours. Some of the common viruses will cause your child to run a fever as well, simply pouring salt on the wound of already feeling badly. Another good thing, is that while stomach virus strains are highly contagious, airborne illnesses which incubate before a child is even symptomatic – adults don't normally pick them all up. This is a good thing, especially because you will be the one responsible for cleaning sheets and nurturing your children as they make it through this disgusting illness.

If your child shows the symptoms of a stomach virus, there really is no need to run them to the pediatrician right away. Firstly, there is nothing that a doctor can provide them with to begin with that will help. These viruses have to run their course and are not helped by antibiotics or medications. Secondly, your child's immune system is already compromised and there is no use in exposing them to all the germs that are waiting for them behind the pediatrician's office door.

Instead, try not to force your child to eat. On the other hand, if they are losing a lot of fluids through vomiting or diarrhea – you should ensure that they take in fluids or else risk dehydration. Popsicles, ginger ale, light sodas, and water are your best choice. Many people try to offer juice to their children, which is laden with acids that can be hard on their stomach when they are sick. Definitely stay away from any milk products, which can curdle in their stomach (especially with a fever) and are too meal like to digest. If your child is up for chewing or sucking on ice cubes (flavor them if you like) that too will help them keep hydrated. Remember, that your child should be trying to drink around 8 ounces per hour. This may seem like a lot, but chances are they will excrete most of it through vomiting or diarrhea.

After a day has passed, you should see marked improvement. Some children bounce back with an eager appetite, while others feel sort of drippy and exhausted. There is no harm in allowing them to stay home from school another day so that they can recover. Often they lose a lot of electrolytes and may be sort of tired from lack of nutrition while they were sick. If your child is ravenous, be sure to start slowly. Offer broth, soups, salted crackers or something else that is substantial but not heavy. You should probably try to stay away from milk for another day or so just to be safe. Whatever you do, make sure that they don't eat or drink too much at once.

If the virus seems to last and linger and comes with pain and intermittent fever, you should take your child to the pediatrician. Certainly, they can pick up back-to-back viruses from school – but they also could have food poisoning, salmonella, or something worse like appendicitis.

It can be very difficult to keep a stomach virus from spreading around your home. Normally, they run through every child and sometimes, the adults. If you just can't afford to get sick, try getting yourself some acidophilus tablets, increasing your Vitamin C and be sure to continuously wash your hands and common items in your home that every one touches. Luckily, many of the stomach virus strains give you immunity once you have had it once, which is why parents don't always catch the same thing as their children. You probably already had it as a child yourself. If you do get sick – call for reinforcements. With your luck, your children will get well before you and not give you the time you need to rest and get well yourself. Stomach viruses are definitely part of childhood. It is nearly impossible to avoid them completely. However, with some careful care and attention your child will bounce back in no time.

While natural, experiencing menstruation can cause a lot of changes for your little girl. In addition to that, having a period means many things that they may not completely understand or like very much. It is normal for most girls to go through a period of rapid development and growth that sort of ushers them into womanhood, long before you or they are ready. There are some things that you can do to help.

The first thing NOT to do is simply hand them a book. On average, most girls get their period between the ages of 9 and 12 – although this is just an average. Some get it earlier while others later. The most likely indicator of when they will get it is the development of their breasts. Pediatricians normally say that once they begin to bud – their period will follow in 6 months time. Still, don't give them a book to explain the whole thing. It is much better and more calming if it comes from you.

The best thing you can do as a parent is sit down and talk with your little girl long before they get their period. Allow them in the bathroom with you and try to show them as you go what it is like to have a period. Above all, let them know what to expect. The sight of blood can be terrifying for a young girl – and if it happens at school or when you are not around, you want them to have a heads up. Come up with a plan for this day. Your child may feel perfectly comfortable going to the school nurse or may rush through your bedroom door to tell you about it. On the other hand, it may cause them to feel a tremendous amount of stress, fear, or embarrassment. If you don't think your child is comfortable talking to another adult about it – make sure they can call you. Come up with a nickname for their period, so they can tell you about it over the phone without other people knowing. (For me it was Aunt Ruby)

There can often be a short disconnect between dad and daughter during this time in their life. Partly it is because they still feel like a little girl and partly because they don't want their dad to know. Dad should probably remain happily out of the loop until he is invited. As expected, the hormonal surges during puberty and this time of the month are like punctuated PMS. Not only are they suffering from hormonal imbalance, but your child is also suffering with the emotional side of having a period. Give them a little leeway and allow them to grow accustomed to the idea.

If you have talked about it before – plainly and honestly, then preparing your daughter for the world should be easy. Have them carry a small purse, show them exactly what to do and pack them an Advil or two in case they are prone to cramps. Then start marking your calendars. Most girls will be irregular for the first few months, sometimes skipping a period and other times have scant bleeding every few weeks. As things level out, you can begin predicting their cycles and preparing them ahead of time.

Some girls are excited about this time in their life while others just are not. A lot of their attitude about change and growing up comes from how their parents feel about them growing up. If you are always wishing them to be a baby again or dwelling on the things they did when they were a toddler, you are silently sending a message that you won't love your child as much when they grow up. Make sure you let your kids know at this age, just as you did when they were little – just how cool you think they are. Allow them to embrace growing up and the changes that come with it with honesty – and your daughter will likely adjust just fine.

In the education system today, reading is more important than ever. Most school districts have programs like Accelerated Reader – that are implemented to award students points (and grades) for reading a certain amount of words. They then take comprehension tests on the books they read and get scores on them. Children normally have a goal based on their reading level. Additionally, there are plenty incentives for kids who read a million words per school year. What can make this reading hard is that most of it is independent of the classroom. While your child's teacher may still have group books that they the entire class reads and discusses – they are largely responsible for reading at home. If your child loves to read – then you are in good shape. However, many parents find that their children would rather do just about anything else than sit down and read a book.

When the reading is forced as homework, it can make this unpleasant task even more difficult. Parents are then left to find solutions for getting their child to read. Even more disheartening is that your child can quickly fall behind in their reading levels if they don't maintain a certain level of reading. If your child is assigned to read for an allotted time each night or has to read one book a week – you are probably right there hovering over them, setting timers, and pointing your finger so that they will keep their nose in the book. As your child gets older, this can become a huge point of contention between parent and child. Unfortunately, though, it will eventually affect their grades and performance in school.

There is no reason to discuss the zillion reasons that reading is vital to your child's educational success. You already know this. The trick if getting them to read things that they enjoy. In the Accelerated Reading program, there are certain books that children have to read in order to be tested and credited for the material. Yet, this program has thousands upon thousands of titles. Your school library may not have but a fraction of these books on their shelves. Instead of forcing your child to read books about subjects they are not interested in, peruse the readings lists by subject area and find ones that will resonate with your child. If your child loves baseball – find baseball books. If they love horses, dragons, mysteries or humor – then look for books in this area. Additionally, many of the non-fiction books that are packed with interesting pictures of natural events and occurrences can intrigue even the most bored child.

Then, try to allow your child to find times to read that suit them. Rather than make them come home from school and stick their nose straight into a book – give them some flexibility. They might read better before bed, or in the car on the way to school. When you release some of the pressure from the reading experience and allow them to be responsible for it – they may think of it as something beside a power struggle. Additionally, introduce magazines, newspapers and other periodicals for your child to read.

Another way to get your child reading is to offer a little incentive at home. Remember – there are plenty of adults who hate to read, so your child is not an educational misfit because they would rather be doing something else. If you can offer a variety of material and perhaps something special for reading without a struggle, they may realize there is payoff in reading. You can also try reading a book with them. Sometimes children don't like to read because they have a hard time reading quietly and understanding the material. They may be too embarrassed to tell you or their teacher this. Yet, if you and your child read a book together, out loud – you can help with their comprehension and interest.

As a parent, you also may have to face the fact that your child will never love to read. And this is okay. However, remind them that in life they have to do certain things – whether they want to or not – that are often unpleasant. If you and your child can talk and agree on finding books and opportunities to read that are more enjoyable for them, you may help win the battle over the books.

Article Title: How to Deal With a Child That Lies

At some point, every child lies. Lying has become a learned and ingrained part of humanity. Adults lie all the time and many do it in front of their kids. They may rationalize the lying as political correctness, yet the essence is still the same. When your child starts telling tall tales your reaction to it will play a large part in how quickly they modify the behavior into one leaned more toward honesty than deceit.

Alfred Adler wrote, "a lie would have no sense unless the truth was felt to be dangerous." When it comes to children, parents need to start thinking about this quote and how it applies to their child, family and relationships. Why is your child afraid to tell the truth, what sort of stimuli have they received from you in regard to the lie that makes the truth so frightening and most important have you ever given your child a reason to lie. Children perceive the actions and reactions of their parents much differently than parents do. While a parent may think they are imposing disciplining, demanding respect and manners, setting limits and boundaries children can often feel stifled by the rules with no real understanding of why they are important or why they are in place. Certainly, it isn't a parent's fault perse that a child lies but more than likely, something from their past experiences has led to the lie you are dealing with today.

The first step in dealing with lying is to allow your child time to talk themselves out of it. It is vital for children to develop feelings of accountability and learning what it feels like to do something wrong is one of the only ways this develops. Let them have their lie, assuming it isn't hurting anyone and do your best to go along with it for the moment. As minutes, hours or days pass; begin questioning your child about the lie. If they swore they ate all their peas and you find them stashed under the couch, present the plate of green peas with some concern about how in the world they got there. Ask your child without accusing and try to give them the opportunity to come up with the truth. When they do, which they will at some point, applaud their honesty and try to make them realize that the truth is not all that bad and that certainly mom and dad aren't as ogre'ish' as they might have thought.

Just as parents need and want to trust their children, children need and want to trust their parents. Even with the truth when it's ugly. Kids can learn that their wrongdoings will be made worse by lying about them and should be led to understand that lying is morally wrong and has far-reaching implications. Screaming, yelling and punishing initially may only cause your child to be more prone to lying because they are fearful of the consequences. Effective discipline actually helps curb a behavior issue, rather than simply swipe it under the rug and steal power from children.

The American Academy of Childhood Psychology notes that children are under a lot of pressure and that meeting the demands of family, teachers, schoolmates and others can be difficult for children. Young children under the age of six still have a difficult time deciphering the differences between fantasy and reality and much of their lying may actually be played out in the truths of the stories they tell. When they do this and you catch on, try to help your child's fantasy character do the right thing and show them that lying is not the only answer. In older children, under the age of 12 – lying is impulsive and usually a means to avoid discipline. These children should have a firm grasp on reality by this point and the lying should be decoded and dealt with immediately. Even so, children should be allowed to come to the truth on their own terms and be able to accept punishment for what they did wrong. One mistake many parents make is as soon as the child tells the truth, they drop the punishment. Following through on punishment is vital, especially in early adolescence and allows children to witness the fact that their actions have consequences.

Psychologists warn that children who lie extensively even in situations that do not offer an element of 'fear' may do so for attention. Often the stories that they tell get them more attention from adults and teachers than the ordinary truth would be. These traits can develop in pathological lying traits and should be dealt with by professionals.

When you have children, you know at some point that the little white lies of youth will begin to rear their ugly head. As children transition from a world where make believe and imagination are encouraged into one that is suddenly structured and seemingly unimaginative, lying may peak. Be patient with this behavior and understand that the lies may not be purposeful or intended even. Simply point out the differences between the truth and lies and ensure that your children feel safe and comfortable talking to you even when things go wrong. The younger you instill this feeling the better off you will be. Most importantly, set an example and try to be honest with your children and in your own life. Even if you are telling a vagrant you don't have any change because you want to avoid the situation, remember that your children are watching you do that and they may not understand why it was okay for you to lie. In these instances, silence can be your best friend. Keep in mind, when it comes to children what they are not telling you – may be the biggest lie of all!

Learning how to generate leads in today's business world can lead to significant growth. Regardless of what you are marketing, it is always important to focus on increasing your audience size.

Unless you are trying to market something absurd, there is already an existing market for what you have to offer. The key is in locating these "leads" and then converting them into sales.

If you're reading this article today, there's a pretty good chance that you are already aware of the potency of internet marketing. Learning how to generate leads in 2013 definitely requires some online maneuvering. In the following paragraphs I will share a few great ways to generate leads inexpensively online in today's market.

    Blogging

In order to attract the attention your business needs, you have to learn how to generate leads using various internet marketing strategies. Believe it or not, blogging is an incredibly efficient and inexpensive way to quickly increase your business's exposure online.

Creating web content, such as blogging, allows for you business to be found by those surfing the internet around the globe. If you take a look at any given blog, you will see that all of its content is within one general niche.

By consistently blogging about a single topic, Google and other powerful search engines will begin to recognize you as an authority on the subject. Because of this, your blog will be found organically by people who would have never seen your business otherwise.

The internet is a massive market that you need to take full advantage of to build your business.

    Search Engine Optimization

This next lead generation tip goes hand-in-hand with blogging. Because Google relies on a series of mathematical parameters to rank websites in their search engine, it is possible to learn how the system works and use certain strategies to get your content ranked quicker.

This process is commonly referred to as SEO; or search engine optimization. If you're considering learning how to generate leads online by blogging, I highly recommend that you become familiar with link building and on-page SEO.

    Capturing Emails

If you're serious about learning how to generate leads in 2013, it's important that you understand how incredibly useful email marketing is. A large and responsive email list can be a gold mine when it comes to internet marketing. Once you have an email list than you have an audience to market to again and again.

The trick is in building this list. In order to build the perfect email list, you need to offer opt in's on capture pages hosted on your blog. In order for these blog visitors to willingly offer up their contact information, you will need to give them something in exchange such as a discount on your products or additional information on what you are offering.

After building an email list, you will be able to market regularly to a pool of people who have already admitted to being interested in what you have to offer. Email marketing is an important piece to learning how to generate leads in 2013.

If you have not realised by now – the Digital Gold Rush has arrived and to be successful in this new economy you have to be equipped with the right skills that are necessary to proper.

What are these skills and how do you acquire them? Well there is a solution.

Internet millionaires Jay Kubassek and Stuart Ross have founded the the Six Figure Mentors (SFM) and the Digital Experts Academy (DEA) where you can learn the new skills to be self-sufficient in the new economy and take part in the 'Digital Gold Rush'

What is the Six Figure Mentors and Digital Experts Academy?

So what is the Six Figure Mentors and the Digital Experts Academy? It's a private membership based entrepreneurial education and empowerment academy. It's committed to helping people achieve personal and financial freedom by teaching them the critical skills and mindsets required for success in the new Digital Economy'.

    The Economy has Changed

One of the things the students at SFM/DEA have learned is that there are really two groups of people in the world. One that is always riding the next wave and the other group that is always playing catch up.

For example, in this 7-Day Video Bootcamp Jay and Stuart talk about how the traditional "Titanic" economy which metaphorically hit the iceberg in 2007…. is still sinking.

Yet, millions are hanging on – hoping for a come-back.

Meanwhile, there are lifeboats available and these lifeboats are taking people to a new ship. This new ship is a gleaming cruise liner… this is the "digital economy."

Did you know that there is a 'Digital Gold Rush' happening right now? Many do not realize the significance of this until it's brought to their attention by working with Stuart and Jay.

    Some Quick Facts

Since 2007, necessity driven entrepreneurial activity is up over 200% (thanks to the ease and convenience of the digital economy vs. being an entrepreneur in the traditional economy.)

Jay and Stuart have been teaching people how to replace their incomes online (using their digital business "system") for years. Their students have earned in excess of $40 million online already.

Close to 50 million people a month are searching for ways to increase their income and "make more money." This is double the number pre-recession as it's now estimated that over 30% of the workforce is underemployed.

Considering there are few legitimate options for people looking for a professional solution, what Jay and Stuart are doing offers a real and concrete opportunity to learn and earn in a world that is rapidly changing.

It's legitimate. And, you do not want to be playing "catch-up" the rest of your life. This boot camp is a great place to start educating yourself and to get ready to thrive in the 'new economy'. Once you educate yourself and acquire the necessary skills then you will be in a position to achieve success and become self-reliant in the new digital age.

The absolute wrong time to find out that you have made a terrible mistake in your selection of a particular physician or specialist is after you have begun a treatment regimen. There is no way to guarantee that you will never have a negative experience with the doctors you choose. But now, more than ever before in our history, enough reliable information is available at your fingertips online that you need never enter a patient-physician relationship without knowing almost everything there is to know about a doctor.

How to Search Online for Physicians

When you begin to research a particular physician or specialist on the Internet, naturally you'll want to make sure that you input the most useful terms in the search field on Google, Bing, or some other search engine. Start with his or her name, certainly, but don't stop there. Couple the name with modifying terms, such as:

    • Reviews

    • Complaints

    • Awards

    • Certifications

    • Legal action

    • Malpractice

    • Disciplinary action

This search might yield hundreds, or even thousands, of pages. The trick now is to sort through them and find the ones that will be most useful for you.

    Finding Reputable Reviews

There are many websites and services that offer ratings for physicians. These include healthgrades.com, ratemds.com, vitals.com, zocdoc.com, admere.com, and dozens more. You might also find websites that have not been around as long as some of the most reputable sites. Chances are, you will want to take reviews from those websites with a grain of salt. This brings us to the most important factor when determining what online reviews to take seriously – whether the review site is populated with "closed loop" reviews or "open loop" reviews. A closed loop service is like Angie's List, which caters to home improvement customers but only allows people who have registered for the service to post reviews. An open loop service allows anyone to post reviews – and that means anyone, including representatives of the physician's office or competitors.

    Government Websites

Because physicians must be licensed within the state or states where they practice, information about them can usually be found on the websites for the state government entity responsible for administering physician licensing. For example, in the state of Florida, the Florida Board of Medicine oversees physician licensing, and that government entity's website provides a portal for verifying that a doctor is licensed. State and local consumer protection agencies might also have information on file about physicians who have been disciplined.

    After the Internet Research

Once you have found all you can online about a physician or specialist, if you are comfortable making your quest public, go on Facebook or Twitter and crowd-source the question. Your friends, family members, and acquaintances on social media platforms might be able to share some insight based on their experiences with a particular medical professional. Keep in mind that their experiences were shaped by their unique circumstances, but you will no doubt learn more from people you know and trust than from strangers on the Internet. Also talk to others you are comfortable speaking with about your healthcare needs.

    Conduct Several Interviews

Finally, once you have completed your initial research, schedule an in-person or telephone interview with the physicians who have passed muster so far. This is a crucial step, because even a physician with the most impressive credentials must be able to connect with patients on an interpersonal level. Without that connection, and without demonstrable empathy, you run the risk of developing a personality conflict with your doctor – and that's not healthy for anyone.

Surgery is almost always the last resort for treating debilitating back or neck pain. In most cases, symptoms related to spinal nerve compression related to a degenerative spine condition, such as osteoarthritis, can be treated conservatively, with nonsurgical methods. Only after several weeks or months of unsuccessful conservative treatment will most physicians recommend spine surgery.

In years past, one major reason for avoiding spine surgery, if at all possible, was the highly invasive, relatively risky nature of procedures such as spinal fusion. While relatively rare, complications such as infection, internal bleeding, and nerve damage could actually make the problem worse. Not to mention the scarring, arduous rehabilitation and months of lost productivity that accompany most major surgeries.

Now, though, after several years of significant advancements in the use of endoscopic and arthroscopic surgical procedures, some people who suffer from painful spinal nerve compression might actually have a choice when and if conservative treatment proves ineffective: minimally invasive spine surgery.

    Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Defined

As the name implies, minimally invasive spine surgery is a procedure designed to alleviate back or neck pain and other symptoms using techniques that do not dissect soft tissue and require only a small incision. This contrasts with traditional spinal fusion, which is highly invasive and entails a large incision and the cutting of a muscle tissue for access to the spine. The goals of both types of surgery are essentially the same: to remove the source of nerve compression, whether it be a spinal bone spur, a herniated disc, or some other anatomical abnormality.

In most cases, minimally invasive procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, with no overnight hospital stay required. That alone might be reason enough to consider minimally invasive ahead of traditional surgery for most people, especially considering the spiraling cost of hospital care these days. Yet, there are many other benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery, especially when contrasted with traditional, highly invasive spinal fusion.

How Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery is Performed

While there are many forms of minimally invasive spine surgery using endoscopic techniques, they all follow the same basic pattern. The procedure requires the insertion of a series of dilating tubes, each larger than the next, to provide access to the affected vertebral segment. Once the final tube (called a tubular retractor) is in position, the dilating tubes are removed. Surgical instruments are manipulated through the tubular retractor. This might include a camera, a light, and other tools used to clear away the bone and/or other tissue that is responsible for nerve or cord compression. Excess bone and other material is extracted through the tube. Once decompression has been achieved, the tube is removed slowly, allowing muscles to return to their previous position. One or two stitches may be necessary to suture the incision closed.

Aftermath of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

One of the main differences between minimally invasive spine procedures and traditional surgery is the length of time required for recovery and healing. While neither procedure allows for an instantaneous return to normal activity, on average, most patients who undergo open spine surgery can expect to be out of action completely for at least a month – often much longer. People who opt for minimally invasive procedures generally are able to return to work at nearly full capacity in about a month.

Of course, all cases are different, and no one should attempt to return to full activity after spine surgery until they have received complete clearance from a physician or licensed physical therapist.

Treatment for spinal bone spurs typically starts conservatively, progressing toward more aggressive treatment methods as necessary. In most cases, pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness associated with nerve compression caused by a spinal bone spur can be managed through a nonsurgical regimen that might include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); a regimen of low-impact exercise, such as walking or swimming; a course of stretching exercises; applications of heat or ice packs; or other conservative methods.

A patient might also be referred to a physical therapist for behavior modification training, including advice on how to improve posture and avoid physical activity that exacerbates his or her symptoms. No two cases are alike, so the combination of treatment methods required to provide relief will vary from patient to patient.

A more aggressive method of treatment often used is corticosteroid injections. A compound of anesthetic agent and steroids injected directly into the area where the nerve compression takes place can provide targeted pain relief and reduce swelling. This effect is temporary, however, and more than one injection is often necessary.

    Alternative & Complementary Treatment Methods

Although not always recommended by most mainstream physicians, many patients suffering from back pain and other symptoms related to bone spurs have found relief by turning to alternative and complementary methods. Chiropractic adjustment is classified as an alternative treatment, although chiropractors have gained widespread acceptance over the past several decades. Before consenting to any form of alternative or complementary medicine, consult with your doctor to make sure the new method won't interfere with ongoing conservative treatment.

Other alternative bone spur treatment options include:

    • Inversion therapy – using specially designed tables, patients are hung upside down to relieve gravitational pressure from nerve roots and other components of the spinal anatomy.

    • Prolotherapy – a sugar solution is injected into the spine to help deteriorating connective tissue regenerate, thereby improving spinal stability and relieving pressure from compressed nerve roots.

    • Acupuncture –originated in Asia thousands of years ago and continues to attract loyal adherents throughout the world today.

    • Herbal supplements – certain herbs and compounds, including glucosamine and chondroitin, are believed to have curative properties related to the structural damage caused by osteoarthritis, a precursor to the development of spinal bone spurs.

As mentioned above, the efficacy of alternative methods remains open for debate in the medical community. What is important to remember is that no new treatment method should be attempted before clearing it with a physician.

    Surgery for Spinal Bone Spurs

Surgery is usually the last resort for spinal bone spur patients. There are two main forms of spinal bone spur surgery – open back or neck, and minimally invasive procedures. Open back or neck surgery is highly invasive, requires the removal of a significant portion of spinal anatomy and the insertion of stabilizing hardware and bone graft material, and carries risks for anesthesia allergies, internal bleeding, bone graft rejection, fusion failure, nerve damage, and more.

Then there are the minimally invasive alternatives. Unlike open back or neck surgery, minimally invasive spine surgery does not require hospitalization because it is performed on an outpatient basis. And because it is performed endoscopically, there is significantly less tissue removal involved. Surgical instruments, including a laser and a tiny camera (endoscope) are inserted through a very small incision (usually less than one inch), and only the anatomical material responsible for the painful nerve compression is removed.

Because no soft tissue is dissected during minimally invasive procedures, the recovery period is significantly shorter than for open back or neck surgery. There also is significantly less risk of infection and other potential setbacks.

Article Title: How to Tell if You Have Sciatica

    *********************** ARTICLE START ***********************

Sciatica is not a scientific medical condition, exactly. It actually is more of a catch-all term used to describe the set of symptoms that are experienced by patients who suffer from sciatic nerve compression. In general, signs of sciatic nerve compression include sharp pain or a dull ache experienced at the site of the nerve compression; intermittent or constant pain in the hamstring, front of the thigh, or buttocks; shooting or burning pain that radiates down the lower back, the buttocks, thighs, and calves; diminished sensation (tingling or numbness) in the lower back, buttocks, legs, feet, or toes; and/or unexplained muscle weakness in an area of the lower body innervated by the sciatic nerve.

Some people also experience a change in gait associated with a symptom known as foot drop, which is an inability to raise the ankles and toes in a normal upward position. Foot drop is characterized by dragging your toes, or by lifting the knee higher than usual to allow the foot to move forward. This is also a symptom of several less-common (if more serious) conditions, such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.

In most instances of sciatic nerve compression, symptoms are experienced only on one side of the body. This is known as unilateral sciatica. Where a patient feels symptoms is an indication of which side of the spine the nerve compression is on. If symptoms are felt in both legs, it is known as bilateral sciatica. This can mean either that the underlying cause of sciatic nerve compression – a herniated disc, for example – is so large that the nerve roots on both sides are compressed; or that two separate conditions have developed on either side of the spine. Symptoms of bilateral sciatica might be experienced simultaneously or alternately on one side and the other.

When to Go to the Doctor

Symptoms might be mild or intermittent at first, and you initially might be inclined to treat it yourself. This is a natural response, especially if you've never had a serious back problem. In fact, many of the conditions that produce sciatic nerve compression remain asymptomatic, or only rarely cause pain and other discomfort. A sudden sharp twinge down your leg may be unpleasant, but it won't necessarily raise an internal alarm, especially if that twinge only happens once. Repeated twinges, though, or an occasional, unexplained tingling in the toes of one foot, ought to make you consider seeking medical attention.

The onset of symptoms is often classified as acute, which means it came on suddenly and is only expected to endure only for a relatively short period of time. Should the shooting pain, numbness, or other symptoms last longer than three months, whether constant or intermittent, they are classified as chronic. You probably won't want to wait that long to see a doctor if the symptoms are obviously becoming worse with time. The best rule of thumb is to see a physician if there is any question at all about the short-term or long-term health of your spine.

If you do decide to visit the doctor to have your symptoms diagnosed, come prepared to answer any and all questions. Once you realize that these symptoms could be a serious problem, start to keep a written journal. Record the time of day you feel the symptoms, as well as a description of your discomfort. Write down what you're doing when it happens. Make note of all of the pain medication you use in an effort to manage your symptoms. Bring notes about your family's medical history, especially as it pertains to the spine. Think back to your childhood and adolescence and try to recall any spinal injuries you may have suffered. The more detail you can provide your physician at the start, the better the chances of arriving at a correct diagnosis and of developing an appropriate treatment regimen.

Memorial Day is on Monday, May 27, and it will be here before you know it. The holiday weekend also officially kicks off the peak months of the summer travel season, so if you plan to take a Grand Canyon airplane tour then, you had better book your seats early.

Airplane tours of the Grand Canyon depart from Vegas in Nevada and from Tusayan, Arizona near the South Rim. Flights operate on a regular schedule during the holiday weekend and depart several times daily. Still, you don't want to wait until the last minute to get your tickets, try to buy them at least one week ahead of time.

Airplane Tours Departing From Las Vegas

When Las Vegas is your departure city, you can go to the West or South Rims of the canyon. The flight to the West Rim takes around 30 minutes and once you are there, you can engage in several fun activities. One of the most popular options is a helicopter ride that takes you to the floor of the canyon. You might also enjoy taking a scenic raft float along the smooth waters of the Colorado River.

Another fantastic tour option is a pass to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. The Skywalk is sure to give you your thrills and chills for the day. It is made out of glass and juts out 70 feet past the wall of the canyon. You feel suspended in the air, 4000 ft above the canyon floor!

The South Rim flights from Las Vegas are a lot of fun too. Flying to the South Rim is the best tour option because that only takes an hour whereas a bus ride there takes over five hours! When your flight arrives, you hop on a bus for a scenic 2 hour bus tour through the National Park, plus you can upgrade and add a thrilling helicopter ride along the Dragoon Corridor and across the canyon.

Grand Canyon Airplane Tours Of The South Rim

One of the most popular tours of the South Rim is the flight that takes you to the South, North, and East Rims of the canyon and lasts almost an hour. That tour allows you to see almost three-fourths of the entire park. It is the best way to get the full Grand Canyon experience when your time is limited.

You should also consider the new airplane tour that includes a raft trip. You begin with the 50 minute aerial tour that takes you to Glen Canyon Dam, there you get in a Jeep and ride through the slot canyons known as Antelope Canyon. Then you get on board a pontoon raft and begin a relaxing float tour along the Colorado River that covers about 15 miles. This scenic tour stays on gentle waters so kids as young as four are allowed.

    In Summary

The Memorial Day holiday is a great three-day weekend to spend exploring the magnificent Grand Canyon while the temperatures are still mild. An airplane tour gives you a unique perspective on the immensity of the canyon and is the only way to appreciate it fully. They are affordable and great fun. Plus, the planes hold 19 people so it is an ideal trip for a large family or a group of travelers who want to stick together. Remember to get your tickets early and buy them online for the best price. Don't go to the big travel website, just go right to the tour operator's site. By completing your transaction on the tour operator's website, you get to take advantage of the Internet rate that is not available elsewhere.
