Yes, commitment is what is called for. He never cared whether a Monday fell on a Friday nor did it matter to him if it was raining or dry. His motto was, "I am exactly where I need to be at this time. Just take it easy, it'll all work out just fine."
I met him many years ago. Let's just call him Tom. We were in college and he was the roommate of a friend. But they were so different. My friend wanted something out of life while Tom thought that life should bring him all things.
My friend worked hard, studied late hours, focussed on his dreams and goals and graduated with honors. He was committed to his success. Tom, on the other hand, wanted all the good things in life, but didn't have direction, a plan, a commitment to his future. No one seems to know what became of Tom. He definitely should have been committed.
It doesn't matter what it is that you want or are striving for. To succeed, a high degree of commitment is necessary. We demand it from others but, most times, do not ask it from ourselves. How would I like it if after paying a webmaster my last penny to get my web site working, he looks at me and says, "You win some, you lose some. I'll do my best and see what happens. I'll get it done soon. And when it's done, it will probably work, but who knows?"
I wouldn't like to see my child lying on the operating table and hear the surgeon say, "Well, I'll do my best. You win some, you lose some. What do you expect from me? I'm like everybody else-- just trying to make a living. Maybe it'll be successful, but who knows?"
This I know: I want my web master to be totally committed to our agreement. I want my surgeon to feel bad if he loses. I want him to be committed to the well-being of my son. I want my grocer, my airplane pilot, my friends, my everybody to be committed to what they are doing. And how about me? Shouldn't I be committed to my own success and happiness? Well, sometimes that's a different story, or at least, that's what I'd like to think.
You see, it's almost always easier for us to see the fault out there than to accept the responsibility for our own actions. Many times, it's much easier to blame others than to commit ourselves to the path of success and happiness.
Yes, success is not easy. It calls for commitment, for focus, for hurling yourself toward the thing you love to do. Sometimes, success asks for blood, sweat and tears. But failure does not ask, it demands and takes our blood and sweat and tears. It doesn't matter whether we are dealing with business problems, relationship or health issues. The same principles apply.
Commitment does not guarantee success. All it does is guarantee that you WILL succeed or you WILL fail. On the other hand, a lack of commitment loads the dice on the side of failure. Just the other day I heard from my old college friend. He is enjoying the fruits of success.
We talked about Tom and wondered what had become of him. We hoped that he had found something along the way that he could give his life and passion to. Didn't matter what it was, a computer expert, a teacher, car mechanic, astronaut, farmer, whatever. We wished him well.
Whatever it is that you do, give your heart and mind to it. Express yourself through your work, your calling, your vocation. Doesn't matter whether you're seeking your fortune on the internet or pursuing success on the outernet-- a sense of purpose and a touch of madness will bring the world to your doorstep. I have a bit of the former and lots of the latter. Thus far, with all its ups and downs, with all it's joys and sorrows, with all its failures and successes, life's been good. It's what we make it.

Today turned out to be one of those textbook beautiful days. The sun is shining, the breeze is blowing softly and the temperature is just right -- the perfect day. Even with all the challenges I have to face, I still look up at the sky and smile as the clouds chase one another across a "picture-perfect", blue background.
But I know that all the days to come will not be as beautiful and comfortable as this day is. Yesterday was dark and dreary, pierced with giant streaks of lightning, which generated thunder that rattled the windows.
Yes, I know that all the days that follow today will not be as bright as this one, nor as dark as yesterday. Some days will be better than others. Some will be worse. And I do not know which ones will or won't.
But this one thing I know: There will be change. There will be ups and there will be downs. That's how life is -- there are good times and not so good times. The good times will not last forever. Every now and then, there will be rough times. But remember, even the worst times won't last either.
The trick is to enjoy the good times and make the most of them; to tolerate the rough times and know that they won't last forever. Generally, it appears that the good times seem to go so fast and the bad times seem to last forever, but this is not really so. It is our experience of time that makes it seem that way.
Five minutes in my dentist's chair may feel like an eternity, whereas sixty minutes spent chatting with a friend may seem like just a few seconds. What we are dealing with here is a matter of focus. Let me explain.
Whenever we encounter difficult problems, the tendency is to focus so intensely in trying to arrive at a solution that we become all tense and tied up in knots. When that occurs, we tend to become frustrated, fearful and sometimes angry. The problem here is that we're trying to force a solution instead of allowing a solution.
Anger could be expected, but prolonged anger is harmful to body, mind and spirit. It was the great author and lecturer, Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross who said, "Natural anger lasts for only about seventeen seconds". Anything beyond that is a reaction to circumstances or remembered situations.
Fear is one of our deadliest enemies. The fear I refer to is the type that causes us to stay awake at night conjuring up all the terrible things that could happen because of the unsolved problems we're facing. This kind of fear is dangerous, self-defeating and downright useless. It shakes our very foundations and needlessly drains us of energy.
And to be frustrated is natural. But let us not dwell on the frustration. It's like having a flat tire while driving in a thunderstorm and getting out of the car, becoming soaking wet and kicking the flat tire for being flat. It does no good.
So you ask me, "How then do I deal with my problems?" The first most important thing is to disconnect from the problem. By this, I don't mean that you pretend that the problem doesn't exist. It does exist, so get all the facts you can and then let it be. Break focus with it. This way, your subconscious mind will work towards a solution.
When we force our minds to be totally focussed on the problem, when we do not let it go, even for a short while, we deny the subconscious mechanism the power it has to help resolve the crisis. We must let it go. We must take a break from thinking about the problem.
Do whatever you can to break focus. Since all things have energy, even our problems are energy "things". If we focus on the problem too long, we energize it and make it stronger. By letting go and switching our focus, we shift our energy away from the problem and are now "energizing" the solution.
Does it matter how big the problem is? Not really. The Higher Self knows the answer to every problem we could ever encounter. The size of the problem is not important. What is important is how we look at the problem. Withdraw your attention from it for a short while a number of times a day.
During those times, don't look at the facts. You've already done that. Just look away from the facts to something pleasant, maybe listen to some good music, watch a great movie, go for a walk, talk to a good friend, read a good book. Just break focus with the problem for a short while.
If you do this, you will notice that the problem will appear to be less and less formidable. And somehow, in some way, you will get the guidance to do what's necessary to overcome the challenge. It may be that your car is being repossessed, the house is being foreclosed, a close friend or relative or even you yourself may be battling poor health. Doesn't matter what the problem is, break focus, allow calm, quiet and hope to flow through your mind.
As you practice doing this, almost magically, things will start to change; you will feel better, more hopeful, more empowered. And you will think more clearly. You will hear the "still small" voice within giving you the guidance you need.
Don't take my word for it. Just try it and see for yourself. You have nothing to lose except your problems. And you have everything to gain.
Next time I'll reveal how to use various sources of inspiration to keep on going when it seems that the road has been too long and dark. Remember, Morning has been all night coming, but see how surely it comes.

Many years ago, I was sitting with a number of top executives in a business meeting. We were discussing the possibilities of getting more customers. The thought came to me that we should call Jim, a certain competitor, and ask him if he would send us some of his extra business. The thought seemed so ridiculous that I didn't even voice it. What? Ask a competitor for business? It was too far-fetched to consider.
A week later at a trade meeting, I bumped into Jim. We talked for a little while about our various businesses and then I did a strange thing. I asked him if he had any extra business that he couldn't handle at the present time. I told him that we had some excess capacity at the plant and would be willing to help him out.
Jim looked at me and smiled. "I wish you had asked me that last week," he said. "You see, John, we recently acquired two new, large accounts but we didn't want to lose some of our smaller accounts. We are working over capacity right now. We wanted to give some of the excess work to another company that had the capability of handling them."
Jim shook his head and continued. "I thought of calling you folks to ask whether you wanted some extra business. Before I could make the call, I got sidetracked with other things and forgot about it for a day or two. Then, a few days ago, Marty from XYZ Corporation called and asked if we had any contracts that they could help us out with. I was only too happy to agree. I wish you had asked me sooner."
Yes, I, too, wished I had just ASKED. For many reasons we are reluctant to ask for what we want. The feelings are complex as to why we hesitate to ask for help when we need it most. I, too, have faced situations where I'd rather walk a thousand miles than ask for help. Perhaps, it is human nature, but I really don't know.
I do know, however, that many times the difference between success and failure is the simple act of asking. And who do we ask? And how? This is where the secret lies. An old man once said to me, "Go to God first, and then to man as God directs." The first place to turn to is the Invisible Force that pervades the universe. Some call this Force God. Others call it "All That Is" or Jehovah or many other different names.
We ask in the quiet of our hearts. If we listen carefully, we are led to ask the right person. And if we do this with a confident heart, believing that we deserve the support of the universe, we'd be amazed at the results. With strange turns and with mysterious means we're led to the answer we seek.
Learn to ask for help. Ask in the silence of your soul first, and then ask the person you feel led to. That person could be a friend, a family member, a minister, a counselor or a business associate. Sometimes help comes from strange places. In addition to writing articles, newsletters and books, lecturing and conducting seminars, I am also an intuitive consultant. It never ceases to amaze me how many people call me for a consultation, guidance and insigt and say that they were led to call me through something they saw on my websites, the suggestion of a friend, a book they read or even a dream.
Our world seems to be moving at a faster pace than ever before. Changes seem to come upon us with lightning speed. But that is one of the laws of the universe. Change will always come into our lives. It's how we deal with it that's important. If we meet change with confidence and trust, we'll find the strength, courage and support to adapt, adjust and welcome change. Hope does shine all around.
There are times when events seem to catch up with us and we find ourselves at the end of our rope. Worse, there appears to be nowhere to turn, no help available, no rest for the weary. Do not be deceived by what appears to be. There is an ancient saying, "Ask and ye shall receive."
Whatever the times seem to be, whatever problems we face, whatever difficulties we imagine in our minds, let us remember that there is always a way out. Let us remember that we are children of the universe with all the gifts of the universe at our disposal. Let us ask the universe for what we need and we'll be guided to someone who will be the answer to our problem. Just don't sit there -- ASK!

When my son, Jonathan, was much younger, I would try to help him with some of his tasks, whether it was his homework, chores or even just plain, simple advice. Many a time he would look at me in exasperation and say, "I know that, dad." Even when he did solicit my help directly, he would listen, but not "hear" what I had to say.
Now, mind you, I do not claim to be a paragon of excellent advice or wisdom, but many of the things I told him would have saved him tremendous amounts of time, frustration and heartaches. As Jonathan grew older, he learned to listen a bit more, so instead of discounting most of what he heard, he would evaluate, weigh the merits or lack of, and then make choices based on what was consistent with his idea of right and wrong or good and bad.
The Universe speaks to us all the time. It doesn't always do it in ways that we expect. Sometimes a
message comes from a friend and at other times, it may be someone we do not really care for who brings a very clear message to us. There are times when the messages are sent through dreams, or books, or radio, TV, the Internet and even the more prosaic form of the telephone.
If we close our minds and think that "we know that already," we may miss the one little point that could have saved us a lot of trouble. Keeping an open mind gives us an opportunity to evaluate the communications we receive and then make decisions based on our own true feelings.
The story is told about some scientists who went into an apple orchard to study apples. They were busy with their notepads and pencils, measuring the dimensions of the apples they found. They observed and noted the size, weight and colors of the fruit while off to their left sat one of their fellow scientists under a large apple tree. He was quietly eating an apple.
All the other scientists knew about apples. The one who was eating the apple knew "apples." Knowing about something does not necessarily mean knowing the thing. Knowing about God does not mean knowing God. Knowing about the secrets and laws of the Universe will not do us much good if there is not the deep knowing in our hearts and souls.
There have been hundreds of thousands of people who've read one or more of my books. Among the many wonderful email I receive would be one or two short, to the point comments saying something to the effect of, "I know all that already. I've been practicing all that stuff for years and so you haven't told me anything new."
My feeling is that there is really nothing new. As the Book of Ecclesiastes says, "There is nothing new under the sun." What I think is new is the interpretation we bring to things, the different way we look at the information we receive. We can choose to see if, perhaps, there are any gems in what we hear and see or any wisdom in what we read or listen to.
By opening up our minds to new possibilities, we may find that we are being led by that glorious, higher self within us to explore possibilities that have the potential to bring us peace, joy, wealth, success -- all good things.
If someone tells you that you shouldn't do something because it doesn't work, what that person is really saying is that it doesn't work for him. Listen to your heart, gather all the information and let the Universe show you how to make it work.
Jonathan listens a lot more these days. He reflects and thinks about what he hears, sees or reads. He is willing to listen to points of view that are totally different from his own without getting defensive as he used to. As a result, he has become more tolerant, more compassionate and, in many ways, more successful. He has grown into a fantastic young man who, I am sure, will bring much credit to all that he chooses to do.
Let us not be like the person in the little ditty who says:
"In matters controversial, my perception's really fine. I always see both points of view -- the one that's wrong and mine."
Let us, instead, listen to all that comes to our notice and after reflecting on it, exhibit the qualities of tolerance, peace, understanding and compassion. And as Commander Spock would say, "Live long and prosper."

I want to tell you a little story. It happened during my first year in college. I was sitting in my room, late one night, studying for a chemistry test.
Tests seemed to be a major part of my life in those days. I longed for the time when I would never have to take another quiz, study for one more test or await the results of final exams.
I took a break from the chemistry book to reflect on the injustices of life. The food in the cafeteria seemed designed for nutrition and not enjoyment. The professors were unfair, so many projects, too much homework, too little time, too much this and too little that.
Shaking my head, I reached for a book a friend had dropped off the day before, leaned back in my chair, and switched my attention away from studying, at least for a short while. I looked at the title of the book. It was "The Night They Burned the Mountain," by Dr. Thomas Anthony Dooley.
I casually flipped it open and thought I'd skim a few pages. My eyes settled on a sentence that was to determine, to a great extent, the path my life would take. The words read, "It's better to light one candle than to curse the darkness."
I looked once more at the words. They seemed to burn into my mind. I closed the book, went back to studying for another hour or so and then went to bed.
Before falling asleep, I looked at my professors in a different light. Instead of seeing them as demons intent on making my life miserable, I now saw them as dedicated teachers trying to impart their knowledge and wisdom to me. Perhaps the cafeteria food was not so bad after all. Tests were there so that we could measure ourselves of today against ourselves of yesterday.
What Dr. Dooley said to me on that night long ago was this: Bring light into the situation, don't berate the darkness; be grateful for what you have, don't be angry at what you don't have; change the way you look at events and the events will change the way they appear to you.
I took the test the next day and got an "A". From that day on, I realized that the circumstances and events around us somehow reflected our inner landscape. That perspective is important and by changing the way I look at my world, I could change my very world.
Decades have come and gone since that first year in college. I have acquired various degrees in chemistry, mathematics and business and have worked in the hallowed halls of corporate America. I have written best-selling books and have lectured from Sydney, Australia to San Francisco, California; from Bali, Indonesia to Bombay, India.
There are many things I have done and still many more I have left undone. Yet, wherever I go or whatever I do, I use as one of my guideposts in life, "It's better to light one candle than to curse the darkness." Those words have stood me in good stead through the darkest nights of my soul.
I heard again Dr. Dooley's voice when I stood at the deathbed of my wife. It kept my company through the loss of my business. It was with me when my car was repossessed and when they foreclosed on my house.
Times have changed dramatically since my journeys through the "Valley of the Shadow." But have times really changed or have I changed the way I look at things? Life is a lot more pleasant now or could it be that I have learned how to look at life differently?
Change the way you look at life and life will appear the way you look at it. Look for the good in everything and the good in everything will look right back at you. The way I figure it, you could berate the thorns on the rosebush or tenderly pick a rose and enjoy its beauty.
Perspective, choose it and use it. Use it or lose it. The Universe is biased on your side. Trust the process.

As many times as I've changed residences, moved from one state to another, even moved from country to country, I've been filled with a mixture of apprehension and excitement.
For many of us, just moving from day to day, month to month or year to year creates a similar anxiety or a subtle excitement. It doesn't matter whether we move in time or we move in space, there is one constant -- change.
It seems a contradiction to say that the only permanent thing we encounter in our daily lives is change, but change is what it's all about.
The process of growing from a child into a teenager and then into an adult is one that's constantly filled with change. There is an urge written deep within us, in our very genes and spirit, to grow and change and become the best we can.
Sometimes the urge is buried under tons of daily woes or in the joys of the moment, but it is there, nevertheless. Many of us fear change because we are fearful of the unknown.
My old friend, Deepak Chopra, once told me that it is not the unknown we should be afraid of, but, instead, the known. The unknown is what will become the known as we pour our hearts and minds into it. I go a step further and say we should not fear either the known or the unknown.
Whatever appears to be happening to us now, whatever the future seems to hold for us, we must remember that we have the power to change everything in our lives by a simple stroke of genius -- changing the way we look at things and, more important, changing the way we feel about things.
Reality is actually the interpretation of a point of view. If we do not like what seems to be our lot in life, we have but to change the way we look at our life and we'll change outcomes. I do not know why or how this happens. It might even be a mystical law. But this I know, throughout the centuries, the sages of all cultures have said, "Change your mind and you change your world."
For all of us, the arrival of a new year is just around the corner. It is a good time to review the events of the past year without dwelling on them. It is a better time to look forward into the newness of that which is to come and resolve to do the best you can with what you have.
The laws of the Universe may seem complex, but I have the feeling that is because we tend to want to analyze those laws and figure why they work. I believe it is much better to use those laws for our benefit and the good of all people.
This is a thought and belief world. Whatever we think, if we believe it strongly enough, it will become part and parcel of our lives. Some of you may say to me, "That's all well and good, John, but it's not easy to change your thoughts and your beliefs."
I agree wholeheartedly. It is not easy, but it's simple. Realize that you are NOT your thoughts. You only THINK your thoughts. They are yours and if they are yours, you can do with them whatever you want. Many times we let our thoughts scare us. It's as if our thoughts think US instead of the other way around.
And as to your beliefs, all you have to do is examine them and ask yourself why you believe what you believe. You may be amazed to find that your beliefs have held you captive all these years. Perhaps those beliefs were necessary at one time, but you may have outgrown them. Examine what you believe about money, health or relationships and ask yourself why you believe that.
Change your beliefs about the world and circumstances and you'll change your thoughts about life and how it works. If you suffer from lack, start changing your belief about money into one of abundance and affluence.
If you are experiencing illness, look at your beliefs about health and change them into wellness and well-being. And if you have poor, or non-existent relationships, change your beliefs into those of feeling loved and worthy of all good things.
Life is a process of change. Change is what brings us progress. Welcome change and the unknown. Let every day be the start of a new adventure. Go into the new week, the new year with a new you. Remember that you are a beautiful child of the Universe and the Universe will take good care of you if you believe, trust and expect.

It was early in the evening when the phone call came. Reaching over, I grabbed the phone and was greeted by my cousin who lives in New York City. There was a deep sadness in her voice as she told me that she personally wanted to call me and invite me to the 5-year memorial service she'd be having for her two children.
Although I have spoken with this cousin a number of times since that tragic day, September 11th, five years ago, it had been about 30 years since I last saw her. My work and other time constraints made it highly unlikely that I would be able to attend the event. And, so, I told her that I wasn't sure that I could come, but I'd try.
After the phone call, I dismissed the matter with the thought that I'd send a card with beautiful words of comfort and hope. As days went on, my thoughts were absorbed with other things such as my writing, my websites, my business associates, my books, my friends, my children ... .
My children? Yes, many of us who have children always think about them and trust that they do well. Mine were doing fine, but I still worried a bit. Someone once told me in jest that the first 40 years of raising children are the hardest.
Here I was, thinking of my children who were happy and successful whereas my cousin would never see her only two children on this Earth again. Her daughter and son were both in their twenties and were at work at the World Trade Center when the planes struck. What a dreadful affair that must have been for their mother.
And so, I decided to attend the memorial service. It was one of the best things I ever could have done. Just being there with friends and family members I hadn't seen in years served as a reminder to me of what was important in life.
Though nothing could bring back my cousin's children, my presence and that of others brought a small degree of comfort and hope and made it possible for her to "keep on keeping on." I would have been selfish indeed, had I let my work and other commitments prevented me from making that trip.
We may not usually think that we have an effect on the lives of others, but we would be amazed at how wrong we could be. We do not need to make great contributions to the world -- just small, consistent ones to those whose lives we touch. We could help so many people by just taking the time to listen to them, comfort them or just bring them hope.
I am glad that I visited my cousin. I gained so much by being there. I will never be able to understand exactly how she feels. Nobody could really understand exactly how someone else feels, but we could get a general idea. If we are understanding and compassionate, we will not only feel better about ourselves, but we may have a tremendous, beneficial effect on those whose lives we touch.

When I was much younger, I thought that education would be the answer to all my problems, so I went about obtaining degrees. I collected a good number of them including a summa cum laude degree in chemistry and mathematics, and an MBA among others. But I found that my education, even though it helped tremendously, did not bring real satisfaction. So I put the certificates and diplomas in the bathroom under glass and wrote, "Break in Case of Emergency."
Then I started working for Fortune 500 companies and became intrigued with those who frequented the boardrooms of power and fame. And though a part of me was fascinated, thrilled and even enjoyed the trappings of power, there was something that was missing, which I couldn't put my finger on. My heart and spirit were crying out for something that I couldn't find in major corporations.
Still searching for the "Holy Grail" I became an entrepreneur and built a very successful, multi-national business with offices in the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, India and the United Kingdom. Life seemed good. I traveled the world, wined and dined with leaders of industry and even leaders of countries. I was treated as a prince, but still it all felt empty and useless.
Wherever I sought for peace and prosperity and happiness, I'd find prosperity without the peace or I'd discover abundance without the happiness. Finally, one day, as I sat on my wife's deathbed (she was only in her thirties when she died), it became clear to me that my happiness, peace and prosperity were not dependent on anything external, but on that which was within me,that which had always been with me from my very first day on Earth.
So I started to look within me and discovered a wonderland beyond imagination. I realized that the one spiritual practice more important than all the others that could bring me peace, happiness and prosperity was the practice of going into the "silence" deep within me. Some call it meditation or prayer, others refer to it as contemplation or centering oneself. I do not know what it should be called, but I think of it as the "silence".
In the great silence within, I become renewed, refreshed and excited to face the physical world. When I return from my moments of silence or meditation, I feel great waves of joy. I feel peaceful, secure and safe. Perhaps in the depths of my being, there is a place of beautiful silence where I meet my Creator and where I find renewal of body, mind and spirit. Perhaps true success and peace emanate from this silent sanctuary.
Many years ago, I wrote the following: "Whenever problems seem to get the best of me, whenever I feel them closing in on me, I go to a quiet place that lies somewhere in my soul. I do not reason, analyze or think. Those will come later. I simply go. From this place of silence, I garner strength and inspiration to stand firm in the face of fire, to be calm in the midst of thunder. When I emerge, the world has not changed, but I have. And in changing, a whole new world is born."
I find that is as true today as when I first wrote it or thought it. Success, whichever way we define it, whether by money standards, health or happiness standards, is not a game of chance. It springs from deep within us, from our deepest thoughts and beliefs. It has to do with our fears and hopes and it flows eternally from our spiritual center of gravity. Go into the silence within you. Try to do so a number of times each day. Let your true self speak to you. Listen to the "still, small voice", which is always there. You will find calm, peace and prosperity unknown in ordinary times. You'll find a new and joyous path opening ahead of you and you'll be delighted in the glorious adventures that await around the corner.

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
In times when it seems our entire world is falling apart, there is a great need for us to stop and take note of where we are. Things can happen around us and things can happen to us, but the most important things are those that happen within us -- in our thoughts and perceptions.
It is true that each and every one of us, at one time or another, has faced problems of major complexities. Some have had to deal with matters of health or relationships, whereas others may have dealt with problems pertaining to money. Some of us have had to deal with all three. As long as we are on Earth, we'll have to deal with problems of one sort or another.
Yet, strange as it seems, it's generally not the problems themselves that make for success or failure. It goes far beyond the mere appearances. It's generally the perspective we have on the problems that "make" or "break" us. It's the way we look at things. It's what we think about what's happening to us.
Sometimes good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people. But the opposite is also true. Good things do happen to good people and bad things do happen to bad people. There is no need for us to go into long philosophical ramblings about why such things occur. We'd probably never be able to find out. It would be much more practical to learn how to deal with both good and bad experiences.
I have learned that one of the best things to do when events seem out of control is to stop and take stock of where we are and who we are. By this, I mean we should step back from the problem for a short while and realize that the problem came to us to teach us something. We may never be sure of what that "something" is, but rest assured that we will be stronger and better for it. You may not see it while you're going through the trials and tribulations, yet slowly but surely, a better and stronger "you" is being born if you keep a proper perspective.
And don't think for an instant that the Universe has singled you out for trials and suffering. We all have our burdens to bear -- some heavier and others lighter. But we can overcome, or as I am fond of saying, we can "come over".
As an example, let me share what happened to me over the past few weeks . I was standing by the door, ready to leave to go to a friend's place for dinner. It had been raining constantly for a few hours and there was intermittent lightning and thunder. Suddenly, there was a giant flash of lightning, followed almost immediately by a deafening explosion of thunder. The house shook, the electricity went out and the acrid smell of smoke could be detected.
I was rooted to the floor for a split second before I realized what had happened. For the first time ever, my house was struck by lightning. Cold fear engulfed me and I could feel the sweat pouring down my face. I knew there was damage, but I also realized that I was not injured. For the latter I was grateful. For the former I was angry.
How dare the lightning do this to me? I have always felt safe and protected, no matter what has happened around me. I have survived major hurricanes, terrible storms and tornadoes and was pulled from the ocean when everyone thought I had drowned. I even escaped being trampled by an angry elephant in Asia and gored by wild water buffalos in Africa. I escaped being attacked by a group of bandits in a third world country. I had survived many life-threatening situations, and now to have lightning strike my house? Yes, I was angry, very angry and disappointed.
What? John Harricharan was angry and disappointed? Isn't he the person who wrote such books as, "When You Can Walk on Water, Take the Boat", "Morning Has Been All Night Coming" and "The PowerPause" and others? Isn't he the so-called, highly-evolved personality who tries to live what he teaches? Yes, the very same.
That's right, but here's the difference between the "me" of today and the "me" of yesteryear. There was the initial shock of what had happened and there was fear as well as anger. But I only tolerated such feelings for about five minutes. I did not dwell on them. I quickly went about making sure that there was no fire in the house. Then I left and went to dinner. I had changed my perspective.
When I returned, I found that my communication systems were destroyed. The modems, routers, hubs, telephones, and much of the electronic stuff were literally fried. It took days to get back to almost normal. Then it happened again. A week later, tragedy struck once more and the new phones, modems and such things were again disrupted. Twice in a few days? Again, I was overcome with anger and frustration. Once more, and with difficulty, I sought balance.
The telephone company, the cable people and the repair personnel from the electric company were constant visitors to my home during this period. One of the electricians pointed out to me that the surge suppressors and lightning protector did work and that the damage would have been much more extensive had they not been in place. A brand new router for the internet went down again and had to be replaced -- the second one in two weeks. No email, no phones, no work on the computer.
There were quite a few moments of ranting and raving, but there were also moments of quiet and peace. I made sure that the angry moments were short and temporary. During the moments of peace, I felt an overwhelming gratitude for not being injured and for all the good things that remained. I examined all the external wiring that led to the computers, TVs, DVD and CD players and other electronic equipment and found some that had to be replaced. Had I not discovered those, there could have been a serious fire, perhaps while I was sleeping.
Was all this trying to teach me patience? I don't know, but I can tell you that I lived through it and it all is just a memory now as I write this article.
React to situations, if you must. We are human beings and that will happen. But do not keep reacting over and over again. Come back to center and regain perspective. Become quiet within and return to a place of quiet within your soul and the problems will not seem as terrible as they once did. We are not just human -- we are more than human. The spark of tremendous power and the gift of overcoming lie within our souls.
We will, of necessity, meet many ups and downs in life. With the proper perspective we can make the "ups" higher and the "downs" not quite as low. Keep on keeping on with trust and hope and you'll find that an uncommon strength comes upon you. You will find a peace unknown in ordinary times. You will discover that you are far bigger than any problems that come your way.

The past six weeks have been instrumental in teaching me patience. Normally, I'm a very patient person, but every once in a while an event raises its head and says, "Hold still, son, you have a lot to learn about patience and the wonderful things that could happen when you learn the secret of waiting."
Now, I must let you know that patience has not always been my strong point. In the days of my youth, I have been known to make quite a fuss when things did not move with the speed I wanted or expected.
Much as I have overcome most of the impulse to rant and rave when things don't get done as promised, I still have vestiges of hidden pockets of impatience somewhere deep within me.
My office runs through the proper use of computers and their associated systems. Sometime over the last several weeks, my main computer ceased functioning and the manufacturer promised to fix it. What started out as a simple matter evolved into an extremely complex situation.
Every day, I spoke with the computer company and they promised that the repair would be done within days. About two weeks into the frustration, I was told that the replacement part could not be found and so they would have to give me a brand new machine. Naturally, I was delighted that I would now get a replacement with all the bells and whistles.
The promise was that within a week, the new machine would be shipped. When a week came and went without the computer arriving, I found my frustration level rising to uncommon heights. Strange visions of writing a thousand letters to the manufacturer's corporate executives, or bashing the ailing computer with a baseball (or cricket) bat at high noon, with local and national press coverage crossed my mind.
I remembered, only too well, that an old, wise man had said that the last test of the master was overcoming impatience. But I was in no mood for masters or overcomings. The bumper sticker I saw on a car long ago described my deepest feelings. The sticker pictured a vulture sitting on a branch of a dead tree, sweat pouring from his head. The caption read: "Patience, my ass, I want to kill somebody".
I thought of the bumper sticker and smiled. Since I had been waiting for over two weeks, one or two more days won't make much difference. But the urge to take drastic measures came back in a few days when no new computer arrived.
Many times, in a rush to get from here to there or to do this or that, we make ourselves prisoners of time. Being a prisoner of time could be as terrible as being a prisoner in a dungeon. We make ourselves prisoners of time when all we do is rush to work, or rush here and rush there. We miss so much in life by rushing.
Somehow, the world passes us by, during our rushing and we wake up five, ten, or twenty years later and wonder where all the time has gone. Our children have grown up, our old jobs no longer exist, some of our friends have gone to another dimension and yet, the sun still rises.
If we were to slow our pace a bit and flow with the river of life, perhaps the problem would work out fine anyway. I have discovered that it is counter productive to force things to happen. It is much better to create a climate where we allow the things we want to occur.
With that in mind, I decided to let go of my attachment to outcomes. I was not going to fume and fret if my new computer did not arrive as promised. After all, I had been using my backup machines for a few weeks without undue hardship. What difference would another week or two make, anyway?
With those thoughts, I went about doing my work. Then, a few days later, I received an email which said that my new computer was being shipped the next day. All the proper specifications for the computer were in the email. The computer would be a brand new machine with the exact specifications of the old one. I was pleased -- very, very pleased.
But the next day, when I checked the tracking information, I saw that the shipment was canceled. ARRGH!! The vision of the vulture on the bumper sticker returned with a vengeance, but I gently pushed it away. The computer will come when it comes I murmured, and I went on with other pressing matters. I didn't even bother to call the manufacturer. I had done all I could do. Anything more would have just made me more frustrated.
Yes, the world does speak to us in thunder tones of truth. Listen and learn and life becomes more peaceful and joyous. Ignore the voice and frustration takes over. And so it was that the next day, I checked the tracking information again, not with the thought of getting my computer quickly, but just out of curiosity.
Imagine my surprise when I saw that my computer was shipped, but instead of sending an exact duplicate of the broken model, the company shipped me their most advanced machine that had just been released to the market a few days earlier. I would have waited a few months, if necessary, for that model. It was much more advanced than the old model I should have received. When the machine arrived, I smiled and said, "Thank you", to no one in particular.
Perhaps, it was releasing the constraint of time from my consciousness that precipitated this outcome. The universe speaks to us in many ways. Many times, like impatient children, we want what we want and we want it now. But the universe has a way of saying, "I know what you want, my child, and I know that you want it now. But if you would wait just a little while longer, I will give you something much better than what you think you want."
Strive to become free from the hustle and bustle of daily living. Release yourself from being a prisoner of time. In doing so, you'll find that things have a magical way of working themselves out and that where there's a "good" there's a "better". And where there's a "better", there's a "best". The universe wants you to have the best. Give it an opportunity to bring your "better" or "best".

The story has been told and retold countless times about the battle of Waterloo. Poems have been written and songs have been composed detailing every conceivable aspect about it. The English tell it one way and the French share it from a slightly different point of view.
History and legend has it that after Napoleon Bonaparte's army was defeated and the Duke of Wellington prevailed over the French, Napoleon was taken away and imprisoned. One day a group of newspaper reporters came to visit. They had obtained permission to hold an interview with the famous French general, Napoleon Bonaparte.
Even though Napoleon was in prison, he carried himself with dignity and looked with piercing eyes at the group of reporters gathered there before him. Questions were asked and answers given. The reporters wrote every word down. This would, indeed, be good reading. They would boast to their children and grandchildren how they stood before the great general on that long ago day.
Suddenly, from the back of the room, a voice, somewhat more gentle than the others was heard above the din. "Mon general," the reporter said, "Tell me why the English won at Waterloo. Did they have a superior army?"
"No!" replied Napoleon.
"Well, did they have better weapons?" asked another reporter.
"No!" was the answer again.
Then the first reporter asked again, "Why then, Mr. General, did the English win?"
Napoleon's eyes slowly swept across the room. The silence was so deep that it was almost deafening. You could have heard the proverbial pin drop. Then he replied, "The English fought five minutes longer."
From the mouth of the great general himself came the answer, "The English fought five minutes longer". Many times, five minutes longer is all that it takes. Times have changed from the days of the Emperor Napoleon. But many things still remain the same.
Sometimes victory is just a few minutes away. Yes, I know, we all go through terrible times. In today's world many of us are faced with crisis after crisis. For most, there is never enough money, no jobs, poor relationships, ill health and the list could go on and on. Of course, there are good times, too, but the hard times usually block our vision of the good times.
When things get really bad, we turn this way and that looking for some help or at least some hope to keep on keeping on. Anything will do--a kind word from a friend, a paragraph from a good book, a stray piece of music from the radio, even a Hollywood movie.
Some people will be there for you, others will turn and run from you, fearing for their own well-being. Still others may throw you a crumb of money, or food and hope you won't ask for more. Be grateful. They do as they see fit to do at the moment. Your job is to just keep on keeping on.
When you are down in the arena and the dust is in your mouth and you can hear the screaming of the crowd, remember, "The English fought five minutes longer." Sometimes it's so bad that one day at a time is too long. So go one hour at a time. And if that's too long, then how about five minutes at a time?
Success is sometimes just yards or minutes away. There are times when the last few yards may seem like miles and the last few minutes may appear to be hours. But if you keep on keeping on, if you do not let hope die, if you have faith in the goodness of the universe and the Force that created us, you will win in the end.
Why did Napoleon lose to the English at the battle of Waterloo? The English simply fought five minutes longer.

More often than I care to admit, I bump into a problem that shakes the very core of my being and challenges the heart of my belief system. At such times, I feel the world closing in around me and a tendency toward desperation begins to raise its ugly head. My first impulse is to fight back, to attack the attacker, to react by either running from or toward the problem.
But I do not follow my first impulse any longer. I now stand back and look at the problem for a while. I observe it from different points of view, all the while realizing that I am not the problem but that the problem is just an indication of a small adjustment I have to make in my thinking.
No problem is bigger and more powerful than we are. We are all children of the Infinite. The Universe is biased on our side. We have within us untapped strength and wisdom to deal with all challenges that come our way.
All problems have within them the seeds of their solution. We must learn to listen to the Silence, to hear the instructions from within and to follow the "still small voice." Life whispers to us all the time. It tells us to go this way or that, to take this road or the other. When we are frightened by what appears to be major problems, we block the "still, small voice" from our consciousness and only hear the howling winds and the thunder of the storm.
Find a quiet spot in the middle of the turbulence. Go to a quiet place within your soul and stay there for a short while. Do not rant and rave at the problem. Just go to this spot and let your fears be calmed, even for a moment. Don't listen to the call of the problem but, rather, listen for a few seconds to the song of your soul.
I often say that it's not what's happening around you that causes anxiety, but what you think about what's happening around you. Remove your thoughts from the problem for a short while. Don't try NOT to think about the problem. That doesn't work. Just remove your focus from the problem and think of something else. With a little practice, it becomes second nature.
Know that you're bigger and stronger than anything that seems to annoy you. Look away, for a short while, from your problem and know that its solution is coming to you. Trust the force that created you and placed you in this part of the universe. Trust the process that has sustained you until now. Let go of the problem. Remember that it is not the problem that's holding on to you, but that it's you who are holding on to it.
Let it go. Don't be like the man who was frantically rowing away from shore while his boat was firmly tied to the dock. If you want to get to the other side of the problem, you must cut the rope that's holding you to the dock.
Soon you'll begin to see signs that you're on your way to success. Don't stop what you're doing and look around all day for such signs. You WILL see them. Ideas will come to you. You'll have strange urges to take action by calling someone, writing a letter, sending an email. This is the "still, small voice" speaking to you.
Your problems are not more powerful than you are. You have the key to success. It is your birthright. No one can ever take it away from you. Be still and know who you are. Be calm and feel the countless tides of the centuries running through your mind. Know that you're unique and that there is not another human being on this earth that has the combination of talents and abilities you have. You are as valid as the sun and the stars.
As Commander Spock would say..."Live long and prosper."

Tom was a wonderful human being. He was kind, caring and helpful to all those who sought his assistance. The only problem was that most of us did not like to be around Tom. Much as he tried to be a "good" person, there was always an aura of doom and gloom around him. It didn't matter whether he was speaking with you on the phone or sitting across the table from you, you just would get the feeling that the world was coming to an end or that your life would be in a terrible mess. Were you to spend an hour with Tom, you'd feel that all your energy was drained out of you.
Now, mind you, as I said earlier, Tom was a caring person. The problem was, however that Tom carried around with him a "cloud of negativity" born of desperation. His was definitely a desperate matter. It didn't just stop when he got off the phone. The emptiness in your stomach, the low energy would persist for quite a while until you eventually forgot about him. That is how powerful the feeling of desperation is. It has the power to turn off the brightest light in our lives.
Desperation broadcasts a very strong message to all within our sphere of influence. It even goes beyond that to people who are meeting you for the first time. Business associates tend to shun you, partners want to avoid you, everyone -- even little children -- feel uncomfortable around you.
So what do you do if situations and circumstances seem hopeless and your fears force you into desperation? Simple, but not easy. First, try to slow your thoughts down. You are desperate because of the incessant, negative self-talk, which has taken over your entire being. Slow the internal conversation down. Take a break from whatever you're doing -- even if it's for a few minutes.
Next, breathe deeply a few times, not any special count like breathe in for a count of seven, hold for a count of five and then breathe out for a count of seven. Do that if you want, but it's not necessary. Just slow breathing, in and out, will lower the tension in the body, mind and spirit to a more manageable pace. Realize that things are as they are, but can be changed. You can change them by becoming quiet within yourself and then listening to the feelings you have. Ask yourself if there is anything you can do about the problem at this moment.
You will get one of two answers. Either "yes" or "no." If the answer is "yes," go ahead and do what you can. If the answer is "no," then go do something else or maybe even nothing. This simple exercise is a practice in patience and will tune-up the mind and make it possible for you to find creative ways for your problem to be resolved. And it will be resolved in ways that sometimes may seem magical.
Now, I realize it is not easy to conquer desperation with the flip of a switch or the snap of the fingers. Having been in the middle of it many times, I discovered that it generally takes courage and practice to overcome. Of course, most of us can't stop worrying by telling ourselves not to worry.
But we can put a time limit on it. A simple trick I use is this: I acknowledge that the situation is bad and I say to myself, "John, this seems to be really terrible -- really, really bad. But it may only appear that way because you're desperate and scared right now. It's OK to be scared for a little while. However, don't spend all day being frightened or desperate. Take 30 minutes, an hour, even a few hours if you like. Be as desperate as you want for that period of time. Then drop it and go on with other things." Just practice this whenever you feel scared and desperate.
And Tom, what about Tom? Well, He continues to call. He's exhausted all the time. Desperation, you see, consumes all his energy. I tried to show him that there is always hope, that his problems would let go of him when he got quiet enough to loosen his grip and let go of them. I tried to teach him to breathe slowly and to get quiet inside. He listened, became quiet for ten seconds and went right back to worrying.
Other friends tried to help him, but he would not let go of his problems. I came to believe that Tom thought he would have no purpose here on Earth if he did not have things to worry about. I tried to tell him that it was fine to be happy and that we did not need anything to make us happy. But he would not let go and give himself permission to be happy.

Sometimes, the simplest things are the most profound. Many times, the most obvious things are often ignored. A good percentage of the time the most common sense principles are the ones most disregarded. Perhaps, it's because we are so intent on making a living that we forget about making a life.
One of the most forgotten principles for personal success is a word ignored by almost everyone--Goodwill. It is a principle so underused, yet so powerful, that it could take us to the heights of success. It remains underused because people overlook the disarming power disguised in subtle terms such as compassion, kindness, empathy, unselfishness and caring.
In marketing classes in MBA school, we learned many useful things about advertising strategy, marketing to consumers, studying statistics of a sales campaign and getting the order. To this day, I use the tools of the trade to help me in my business. But one thing that hardly anyone touched upon was the concept of "Goodwill."
Goodwill is not just a number on the accountant's balance sheet, but is an invisible, little-used tool that all of us have at our disposal. Let me explain. Most of us could help solve someone else's problems, either with a telephone call, an introduction or referral, a signature or other obvious means. But we refuse to do it. Why? I'll tell you why. Because we feel there's nothing in it for us! Or we are afraid to get involved.
Let me tell you a true story. It was many years ago. A young woman walked into my assistant's office. She was looking for a job, but we had none to offer. Just the week before, all job vacancies had been filled. At the request of my assistant, I spoke with the young woman. She only wanted to work for the summer and then would complete her last semester of graduate school and return home to her country. She had been looking for a summer job for almost four weeks. No one wanted to hire her and train her to work for such a short period of time.
I remembered my days as a graduate student and felt her anxiety. Although there was no sound business reason to do so, I told my assistant to create a job for her. Afterall, she needed help and it felt good to help someone without figuring what was in it for me. I hardly saw her until the last day when she came into my office to say goodbye. She thanked me again for the job and handed me a business card.
"This is my father's card," she said, "If you ever visit my country, call my dad, he'd be very happy to meet you. I've told him all about how kind you and your employees were to me. In my country, my dad is a member of Parlianment and an important man."
And that's how I ended up having lunch with the mayor of Nairobi, dinner with the Vice President of Kenya and making business alliances that brought my company profits hundreds of times greater than the salary we had paid for summer help.
On top of that, I enjoyed going on photo safari to the Serengeti Plains of East Africa, walking along the beaches of Mombassa and sipping Pimms#3 at the Mount Kenya Safari Club, while enjoying the fantastic view of the snow-covered summit of Mount Kenya. Even the Kikuyu dancers reminded me of exciting adventures in foreign climes.
This is not an isolated case. It's just one of the more obvious ones. You never can tell who will lead you to that next contact, that profitable contract or the added financing you were looking for. It is important that we treat everyone with dignity and respect. REMEMBER: Business does not do business with other businesses. People do business with people.
The Internet is not about computers, technology or even marketing. That would be like saying cars are about the internal combustion engine and the laws of thermodynamics. The Internet is about people and communications. If we communicate with honesty and feelings, we'd find that most others respond in kind. So whenever the opportunity arises, do something for someone else who is powerless to do it alone. Don't worry about what you are going to get out of it. The Universe has a way of repaying in ways far too strange to understand. Earn "goodwill" and you'll prosper beyond belief.

I first met Cindy during my second year of college. It was in the cafeteria where she bumped into me. Yes, she literally bumped into me and her food tray went crashing into everything. I heard her mutter under her breath, "What an idiot!"
"Pardon me," I replied, not knowing what else to say, but definitely feeling that it was not my fault. "Oh no," she said, "It's always my fault. I am really so clumsy. I am very sorry."
Then I realized that she was referring to herself when she had said, "What an idiot." Over the months I got to know her a little better. Sometimes we'd sit at the same table in the cafeteria and other times I'd be sitting next to her in a class.
It never ceased to amaze me how often she repeated the phrase, "What an idiot", at the smallest thing that happened. It was as if she had been programmed to respond to the slightest misfortune with self-blame. One day I finally asked her why she kept referring to herself as an idiot. Her eyes opened wide as she said that she was not aware that she did. She confessed that it was probably a habit and that she always felt that when anything bad happened, it was her fault. She told me that the voice in her head always told her that she was an idiot and pointed out that she was not as good as others. The constant, negative chatter in her mind had prevented her from achieving her greater potential.
Cindy managed to graduate and we eventually lost touch with each other. But I always wondered how she was doing. I always hoped that she was able to still the chatter in her mind and to change the programmed voice to a more positive self-image.
The matter of chatter is a very serious one. If we were to listen carefully to what we are saying to ourselves we would find very interesting conversations going on. If we are happy and fulfilled, these internal conversations would probably be positive. If we are constantly worried and depressed, we would probably have sad and confusing conversations.
We can literally change the outside world by first changing our inner world. Generally, it's our inner conversations that determine what our outer world looks like. If we constantly think sad thoughts, then our self-talk will focus on sad things and the entire world will appear depressing.
If we always think angry thoughts, the world will appear angry. Even a beautiful sunset would appear to be filled with angry shades of red. But if we think peaceful and positive thoughts, the world will seem peaceful and positive to us.
So how do we silence the endless chatter in our heads? Here are a few tips:
* Try to find some quiet time each day and listen to what you are saying to yourself. Don't be like Cindy who kept calling herself an idiot. Once in a while we all say terrible things about ourselves, but if we do it too often, it becomes a habit and we start believing those things.
* As you listen to the conversation in your head, do not follow them. Just observe them and let them go. If you start to focus on the thoughts, you'd get caught up in them and then get carried away by them.
* After observing your thoughts for a while, you'll find that they move on and you are not trapped by them. Remember that your thoughts are not you. You only have them. Don't even worry about replacing them with positive thoughts; that will come later.
Simple as the above exercise may seem, it will have the most profound effect on your life. Gradually, at first, and then faster, you'll find that a greater calm comes over you.
Because you've let go of the chatter, the noise diminishes and you are now able to hear the voice of intuition, the voice of the universe seeking to guide and help you.
Yes, it's a matter of chatter, clatter and clutter and if we turn the volume down, we will be able to hear the beautiful symphonies of life.

In the United States, we just celebrated the "Thanksgiving" holiday. Many other countries have their
own versions of "Thanksgiving." But thanksgiving is not something that should be celebrated on one
particular day of the year. It is good that a day has been chosen for this, but it is up to each and every one of us to be "giving thanks" all year long.
Sometimes we look around at our financial situation and think that there is nothing to be thankful for. Other times we glance at our relationship or health challenges and think that giving thanks borders on the absurd. Yet, if we look around us, we can see that we are not alone in our trials, that many others are having to face similar problems.
Being thankful for life itself is a way of making life better. When we look away from our problems, even for a short time, and generate joy in our hearts, we find that the world seems to change a bit. I do not know why this is so and I don't really need to know. All I know is that the universe seems to respond quickly to a grateful heart.
A grateful heart is, perhaps, a heart full of "greatness." Maybe, the way it works is that when we break focus with our problems and we take a break from being miserable, the River of Life flows more gently and more fully through our being.
Try it for yourself sometime. Stop what you're doing for one or two minutes and quiet your mind. If you're really frightened by appearances around you or if your problems seem insurmountable, you may find that stilling your mind becomes a very difficult task. But with a little practice, a minute or two at a time, it becomes easier to do.
During this minute or two, think of two or three things or events you are or should be grateful for. Feel how fortunate you are to have them. For example, I consider myself extremely blessed to have had my two children, Malika and Jonathan, grow up the way they have. True, there were times when I considered running away from home. And yes, there were moments of anxiety and concern when I thought to myself that children were created for the sole purpose of inflicting insanity on their parents. But don't most of us feel that way once in a while?
Yet, with all the ups and downs of being a parent, I consider myself the most fortunate person on earth to have Malika and Jonathan as my children. They have taught me patience, unconditional love and much more than I can ever list here. I have learned from them. I could not be who I am without the experience of being their father. And for this, I'm grateful. I give thanks.
How about unfortunate situations. Am I happy or grateful that my wife died when she was only in her thirties? Should I be thankful that I was left with two young children to raise and an entire life to reorganize? Of course not! But I am grateful that she was my wife for the years we spent together. She was only nineteen when we were married. I am grateful for her love, for her kindness and compassion and for making it possible for me to be what I am today. We could all turn tragedy into triumph and disaster into divine outcomes if we maintain a spirit of gratitude and if we listen to our heart and soul. It is in our quiet times, in our "thanksgiving" moments that we can hear the universe sing to us. If we listen carefully, we can hear it say, "You are my child and I love you dearly. Look around you. All that I have is yours. Everything is yours. It always has been. Please unwrap your gifts."

Legend has it that Robert the Bruce of Scotland was losing the battle and he barely escaped with his life. His soldiers were hard pressed to keep up the fight as many were wounded and dying. The Bruce, tired, dismayed and broken-hearted found a hidden cave where he took refuge.
He threw down his sword and sat to rest a while. Gloomy thoughts filled his mind and he reflected on the insurmountability of the task he had tried to accomplish. Perhaps Scotland would never be free -- at least not in his lifetime. Perhaps he should abandon all efforts, give it up and lead an obscure life as a fugitive.
As these thoughts raced through his mind, out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a tiny spider trying to climb a strand of web that extended from the top of the cave almost to the floor. Up went the spider and just a few feet from the top, it slipped and fell all the way down.
Over and over again the spider repeated the process as the exhausted Bruce watched, fascinated by the perseverance of the little life form. Once again the spider climbed, this time almost reaching the top. Again it slipped and fell to the floor of the cave. Now with rapt attention, Robert the Bruce watched to see its next move. A few more tries and finally, with one quick dash, the spider reached the ceiling. The Bruce slowly got up, picked up his sword, cleared the depressing thoughts from his mind and went back into the battle, inspired by the strength, will and perseverance of such a tiny creature as a spider. The rest is history. The battle was won and the Bruce was, once more, the triumphant, gallant leader of his people.
There are times when everything in life seems dark and dreary. There are those times when we feel we are totally unable to take the next step or to even move one inch. These are precisely the times when we most need inspiration.
Why inspiration? It helps recharge our energy when all seems hopeless. It gives us encouragement when our "spiritual well has gone dry".
The dictionary gives different meanings to the word, "inspiration". But I think "inspiration" actually means divine messages from the Universe. There are many sources of inspiration and I want to list a few of them below.
1) Nature -- In the middle of the worst crisis, we could take a few minutes to clear our minds and look up to the sky or the stars. A little walk in the park or in the woods will do wonders for the body, mind and spirit. Breathe in the fresh air, watch the ripples on a pond or river, get inspired by the sheer magnificence of Nature.
2) Music -- Listen to some music you really like. The sound will take your mind to another place and you'll find that miracles can occur.
3) Books and tapes -- Spend a little time absorbed in a good book. And I don't mean just self-help or spiritual books. It could be any book that engages your mind and thoughts. For example, when things seem really gloomy to me, I'd read one of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan tales. For me, that works. For you, it might mean a totally different type of book.
And audio tapes, CD's, video tapes and DVD's have been a wonderful gift from technology. Just the other day I watched the movie, Richard Bach's "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" on my video player. Shortly thereafter, I watched the western movie, "They Call Me Trinity" on my DVD player. Talk about being recharged! I was able to face the seeming impossible and come out smiling.
4) Friends -- We are fortunate if we have a few good friends. Somebody once asked me if I told my friends about something I was very involved with. I smiled and answered, "Yes, I told them all -- both of them." Real friends are few and far between, but they can be a tremendous help to you by just being there and listening.
There are other sources of inspiration and I am sure you can come up with your own list that works for you. For example, take a long drive, go fishing, bake some cookies, paint a picture or make some pottery. The point is simple. Use all the sources of inspiration available to get you through your tough times -- to help you, not only to overcome but to prosper. Remember, the Universe is on your side. Just give it a chance to show its magnificence in your life. Happiness should always be our most important goal. All else is secondary. Lift up your eyes and look beyond your troubles. Perhaps you'll see a whole new, beautiful day dawning for you. It's there. Go for it.

PHP as a scripting language means it is designed to work with ease of use on web page designs. Such pages often require the user to input data which can then be treated as input to the various elements of the program that are contained within the script to obtain the desired result. The PHP $_Get and $_Post, are samples of variables that are used to obtain information from forms like the registration form on a membership page.
HTML forms and PHP work hand in hand together in such a way that any element in an HTML page is readily available to PHP scripts.
The sample page in the previous post contains two input fields that are name and age, when the user inputs the data and clicks on the submit button, the form's data is sent to the file "welcome.php" file. The resulting php file would look something like this:
Welcome.
You are years old
The output of the script we made would look like:
Welcome Ernie
You are 35 years old.
That would be an overview of the full potential of the $_GET and $_POST variables and they will be discussed in depth later as we go deeper into their functionality in PHP scripts.
As the previous post discussed, PHP is very easy to use with web pages for the language has all the elements of a web page as a useable element. Now, going forward, forms or pages are easily handled and checked on the user end, meaning when you open a page the data input is easier to verify on the user side rather than have the input sent back to the server for checking and then returning any errors should there be any. This reduces load on the server and network having the data validated on the user end, allowing the information to be sent when the form receives all correct input. This type of handling is called client side validation where the input page verifies itself only requesting for the next step in a process when it returns true (all entries are correct). This way, the error checking and return function is on the client side reducing network and server load.
The $_GET variable is an array of variable names with the corresponding values sent by the HTTP GET method. It is used to collect values from a form by using the method="get". All information sent by a form using this method is visible to all on the browser's address bar but it is limited to only 100 characters.
Take note that the variable contents and names are verbosely displayed so do not forget to take that into account when using the variable for forms processing.
The file "welcome.php" can now use the $_GET variable to obtain all the required information which is shown on the address bar. As it does that, all the name fields of the form will automatically be the ID keys in the $_GET array variable.
The variable is an array of variable names and values that is sent by the HTTP POST method. The $_POST variable is used to collect values from a form with the method="post". The information sent from a form through this method is invisible to others and has no limits with concerns to the amount of information to be sent.

AVG has been a long-time user favorite due to its free available softwares (Virus Scanning, Spyware, and Rootkit protection), though, of course, paying users have the benefits of maximizing more options and features available to them. The latest internet security offering of AVG, the AVG Internet Security 8.0 (AVG IS8, is fast becoming a top choice among users because of its well-designed protection program for both home and small businesses. AVG IS8 has email, instant messenger and browsers protection all combined in its AV engine. Installation and configuration are hassle-free and users can configure updating and scanning schedules.
A popular choice among advanced users, the Norton Internet Security 2008 is regarded as one of the best security suite in the market today. With its price ranging from $29-$71, Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2008 edition boasts of its added full-scale password and identity management, and of its new BrowserDefender technology which lets users have stronger defense against Web threats. The NIS 2008 is claimed by many as an easy-to-use security suite that has a wide range of extra-security features like the Security Inspector scan that warns users about unsafe browser settings. The NIS 2008 is also found to perform better than most security suites in terms of removing infections, cleaning up 80% of all files and registry entries added by malware.
Before getting all too excited to use that security suite you've just bought, be sure to read the following reminders to get the proper information that will help you maximize the full potential of your suite:
• Do not use two firewalls or two anti-virus products at the same time. You should uninstall one of them first before installing the other.
• When installing a security suite, update the program immediately through the vendor's website. Turn on the auto update feature of the program if it has one so that you can be assured that your security suite is always updated on the latest threats.
• Be sure to test your firewall after installing it using an online service like Security Space in order to determine if it has been configured properly.
• Try considering using an Internet service provider or email service that has server side anti-virus and spam email filtering as its second layer of defense against threats.
Internet security and utility software suites aim to combine multiple features into a single product to be marketed by one or more vendors. These suites offer convenience since users get to maximize several features all combined together. Users will also find it easier to contact a vendor in case of upgrades and support and the user has the advantage of asking the vendor to fix problems with any parts of the suite. A licensed suite may also save you money and effort in case you want to install security softwares on one or two more computers at home. All in all, it is still best for users to carefully look for the right suite which can offer them the security and privacy feature they want.
When ZoneAlarm launched its own brand of router, the Z100G router, people thought if the price ($149.95) was worth it. This wireless unit is said to cover 984 feet indoors and 3,280 feet outdoors (claiming that users can now avoid dead spots in their homes) using its extended range (XR) technology and has 108 Mbps network speed that can also support Super G standards (although it is also compatible with the older 802.11b and 802.11g technologies. According to ZoneAlarm's website, the Z100G router has bandwidth monitoring (which is the same technology used, as ZoneAlarm claims, by Fortune 500 companies) and a built-in print server that lets users to print from any wireless desktop computer or laptop directly to the printer.

One of the languages developed on top of the Java Virtual Machine is the Jython, and this project began in 1997. the development of the language has been passed on to several lead developers until Sun Microsystems took over and worked full time on it. Jython 2.2 which is the latest release matches up to the CPython 2.2 release but later, its developers shifted to a new direction for its implementation using ASM and ANTLR to hasten development time. With the interactive interpreter found inside the jar file, you can discover the capabilities of Jython, most specially in executing files.
When using the Open Source Software for commercial gain minus the tricks and preserving the community and openness aspects, there are two things to consider: that payment is collected proportionate to the advantage gained from the software; and that active user in the community can have the assurance that their license charges is compensated in relation to their code contributions. This means a user is allowed to have open access to the source code, allowed to redistribute it, and free rights to make changes to the code; being able to initiate some limited charges supported by certain restricted types of program execution, and agreeing to cash or in kind payments.
Open source software and open source documents are fast gaining popularity. It is firmly gaining a growing market share as well as getting the corporate and the public's interests. It is also quickly entering mainstream, being in the technology world starting 1998. However its concept began alongside the birth of computing. Frequently Asked Questions list or FAQs were the first documents to be known as having used the open source software but beside this information little is known about this list. Open source needs good documentation to spread out to new users and three forms are currently in use: ReadMe files, Manual pages, and HowTo documents.
There are two types of software being used: the conventional closed source from software vendors; and the open source, with Linux and MySQL as examples. Both software have managed to be on the same footing and is in existence probably almost at the same time, around the start of the computing world. Recently, customers are expressing disappointment over the closed source protocol software but are not inclined to be completely dependent on the open source programs. They are looking for warranties, agreements and vendor assurance that they have qualified and committed developers. Their areas of concern with open source deal with collaborative source software and license and feedback from it.
Web Services for Remote Portal provides a pattern for the portal application to allocate portlets between portals. It is the facility to produce an interface to useful function that can be used throughout the enterprise with little or no changes to existing code. Almost all of the newest versions of commercial and open space portal products support it. The key procedure is similar to earlier web services – producer provides WSDL that directs the consumer on how to create a SOAP request. SOAP responses are obtained at the presentation level and the consumer then decides where to display them. Being simple, it provides whatever the enterprise needs to reuse portals across the enterprise.

The ultimate goal of the OSI License Review Process is to guarantee that licenses and software labeled as "open source" adapts to existing community norms and expectations. For that reason, all licenses must go through a public review process described below. The OSI Board is glad to consult with entities in advance to help them navigate the process and improve their license, but formal approval requires going through license-review.
The ultimate purpose of an open standard is to increase the market for a technology by having potential consumers or suppliers of that technology to spend in it without having to either pay monopoly rent or fear litigation on trade secret, copyright, patent, or trademark causes of action. No such standard can properly be described as "open" except to the extent it achieves these goals. The industry has learned by previous experiences that the only software-related standards to fully meet these goals are those which not only permit but encourage open-source implementations. Open-source implementations are a quality and honesty check for any open standard that might be applied in software; whether an application programming interface, a hardware interface, a file format, a communication protocol, a specification of user interactions, or any other form of data interchange and program control. To support industry participants (suppliers, consumers, and regulators) identify and specify standards that permit open source implementations, the OSI has specified a minimal Open Standards Requirement (OSR). The OSI has also made a set of Criteria that can be used to judge whether a standard fully abides with that Requirement.
The FOSSology project by HP is geared towards analyzing open source programs in order to determine under what licenses the various pieces of codes can be classified under. The main thrust of the project is anchored on the premise that although a certain application software like the GPL for example may be classified under a particular license, some of the underlying codes can be potentially classified with other licenses. HP intends to assemble an active contributor's base by providing the gateway to the open source community in to assist in developing additional features to achieve a valuable data mining tool to analyze software.
RSSOwl 2.0 is expected to be a major release in the world of open source applications. It contains lots of new and fun features that will surely provide its potential users with a great time working on RSS feeds. The main goal of the RSSOwl 2.0 is to provide a very powerful, user-friendly and easily upgradeable newsreader for everyone. The platform used to create RSSOwl 2.0 is the Eclipse Rich Client Platform and the database used is the bd4o for the storage of the news.

Although Windermere in the Lake District was once a small thriving rural community today it has become one of the destinations in the region that people are visiting all year round.
In fact the town of Windermere can offer those that visit it the amenities that many of the bigger towns and cities can offer but still have a feel of a rural community about it.
So if you are considering taking some vacation time and looking for somewhere that offers beautiful scenery but plenty of activities as well then why not think about visiting Windermere in the Lake District in England. As you will soon discover when it comes to where to stay in Windermere you may well find yourself spoilt for choice.
In fact when it comes to accommodation you will find that there is going to be something that not only meets your particular needs but also your budget.
You can choose from staying in a luxury hotel which offers the same kind of facilities offered in many such hotels to be found in major cities and towns around the world. Or if you want you can go for something a little more affordable such as staying at an independently and privately run hotel or guest house or you can stay in self catering accommodation instead. Here, you'll find a warm welcome and have the extra benefit of local knowledge.
If you happen to be organizing your accommodation prior to going on your vacation then the best place to look for what you want is online. Today not only travel operators but also hotels and guesthouses will have sites where you can learn more about what facilities they have to offer as well as if they have any rooms available for the time you are looking to visit the area at. All you need to do is type in "Windermere, Lake District Accommodation" in to say Google's search box and you will find that you will be provided with a large number of results for you to search through. Plus if you want in order to ensure that the accommodation you are looking for meets with your particular requirements and budget constraints you can further define your search parameters.
Another way of finding out where to stay in Windermere and especially if you are on a budget is by contacting the local Tourist Information office. You will find that all have websites which not only offer you details of the types of accommodation available in the area, but which can also help you to book your accommodation prior to visiting the town. The accommodation that is shown on these sites is annually inspected and you will know that what they have on offer is of very good quality and they are likely to provide you with more background information as to what it really is like compared to what a travel operator will know. This is because they are from the area and they will know the people who run the accommodation on their site personally.

To most people it may not make sense but once your computer starts crashing or provides you with error messages that you haven't seen before. You just have to backtrack a bit and see what you did. Other than perhaps installations, you should recall the last hardware component such as memory modules or even video cards that may have been incompatible with your system.
A computer is like a puzzle. If you place something there that does not fit, chances are you will be in for a lot of computer headaches. You don't have to be a computer tech to know this. Just be aware of your computer's history and you will be able to remedy the problem.
While our main CPU will always be closed, you will be surprised at the dust it can accumulate if you don't check it regularly. Enclosed as it may, there are still holes to which these things go through. Besides, don't forget that your computer needs ventilation and they are passages that can be gone through especially if turned off.
To clean your computer regularly would be a good way to maintain it as well. Just use a paint brush and perhaps a blower or vacuum to make sure that all the chips and the board are fused together without any dusts that can hamper your PC's performance. Logical but true.
Contrary to what some people believe that they can place different peripherals on their computer, it remains that you have to consider the power capacity of your CPU power supply and make sure that it can handle all the load.
Normally, people would upgrade the power capacity of their power supply for the reason that they want allowance on what power requirements they will need when operating their system. With all the new enhancements and add-on of computers today, you should not be surprised when the time comes your power supply may conk out due to overload of resources. They also have their limits.
Normally, you will find yourself running out of space when folders such as you're documents directory would soon be filled up. People want to leave their files in their directory since most of the time that is the first directory that applications such as Word and Excel would point to.
You can do one of two things. One of which is to change the target directory of your software via the options or preferences panel or second, just make another directory on the secondary hard drive to serve as historical files data. That is why when you format your hard disk, it would be best to split it into two so that in these cases, you have a logical way of storing files as archived ones.
When you get a new computer, you will notice that you will have free slots for additional peripherals such as network cards, TV cards, or modems. While most of the time these slots are not used, it may come to a point when you may use up all of them and then run out of space.
With that in mind, you may be thinking that perhaps it would be better to get motherboards with more slots. Actually, you can simply categorize the add-ons you need. Sometimes, people just want to satisfy their enthusiasm with these slots. It does not always follow that you should have the latest peripherals for the sake of bragging rights. Besides, they will go passé at some point in time anyway.

Did your personal computer or laptop just don't "act" the way it was before? Did something go wrong, though you are not really sure what, but you hope that it will run correctly like it did yesterday? Sounds almost impossible unless you go to a service center and demand the repairman to bring it back to the way it was, possible, though it will cost so much. Maybe you should tinker with your gadget a little more, so you will discover the relief System Restoration brings. When you use System Restoration, your operating system will be supple enough to go back to a starting point that the user have configured. Because every change that programs and applications go thru, gets recorded in System Restoration.
You got to love that smell of new laptops or computer, straight from the box together with the styrofoam and the bubble plastic that kids love to pop. And you know what else loves your brand new operating system?: Viruses. Once you plug in that brand new computer to connect into the internet, viruses are just waiting for you to get connected and in 30 seconds or less, here comes the internet virus worms faster than any real living earth worm. Who'd want that to their new laptop or personal computer? Nobody, so why don't you enable your firewall or install anti-virus software.
"Microsoft and the Windows team have done something a little different with the Vista firewall. They have separated the firewall in to two different interfaces. The default interface is the basic one. At first glance, it looks identical to the Windows XP SP2 firewall. This basic interface is ON by default and loads basic settings for normal user protection. In most cases, this basic setting should work fine. Then they added an Advanced interface for the more security savvy individuals. This Advanced interface gives a greater flexibility over the firewalls settings."
Don't get too discouraged by rumors, read the facts first and you might just find out how untrue what they are saying about Windows Vista Firewall. You are going to find it useful after all.
No third party software can lay claim to the fact that the Windows Firewall starts its protection once the computer is turned on. Is that important you ask? Absolutely. If a capable malware program could turn itself on at the same time that the computer starts to boot, common sense would dictate the danger of this. Now, knowing the fact that the Vista firewall 'does' start at boot, we need to confidently know that it is going to protect from boot.
Windows XP is way different from Windows Vista (though they may sound the same because of Windows). So if you had a Windows XP, it may take a while to get used to Windows Vista, like you got lost in a city you are known to. But when you are lost, there will always be maps available to get yourself thru the big city. As for you Windows Vista you got this to solve your problems, but particularly, on defragging. Vista system engineers made it sure that your Windows Vista's hard disks are defragged weekly and automatically to get your system a good clean and run faster.

Modern boards use plastic stand-offs to which the board simply snaps into place or is fastened to by ties. Older PC casings use brass ones that need paper or cardboard washers for the task. There may also be an issue with the alignment of the board itself (there was an issue with Gigabyte boards sometime back that had the whole board sagging in one place of the other which prevented the memory modules from seating properly. Use plastic tie-downs where a plastic tie is used to pull the board into alignment to solve this type of problems.
Next, check if the power supply has a switch at the rear if it is on (older models) and see if it works. Check for any foreign metal objects that may be stuck between the board and the case which is shorting it out, again the protection circuit would prevent power up to avoid damage to the various sensitive electronics. A faulty motherboard fan can also be causing the problem so check the fan if it works. You might have also forgotten to connect the power button to the board (along with the reset button) so check that too. A shorted reset switch can also keep the board in a state of permanent off, unplug it to see if that works.
Some motherboards are so sensitive to cooling that no fans connected to the on-board fan connectors would prevent power-up to avoid ruining the processor (this would be the case if you were using externally powered or special/exotic cooling systems) try plugging in a fan or two to see if it works. The worst case is to get the lights and fans working but still there are no beeps, display or other signs of life for it may be a signal of a dead board or power supply.
If your bare systems now functions, you can then add your components one at a time so you can continue to eliminate any problem device. The prices of computer parts have indeed gone down so much that they are affordable to most. If one does not want to spend all the time tinkering and wondering what is wrong then a trip to the computer repair shop would be an easier alternative.
If you by chance got yourself a good deal on a second-hand computer that works just right and is affordable enough o allow you to upgrade some parts then you indeed got a good deal. As you get home, you setup your prize and power-up only to find that the system is locked down by a password. A boot password or worse a system password can prevent access to the contents of the hard drive or the system itself leaving you stranded in the boot-up menu. Don't fret, for there are ways to get around the problem and these work almost all of the time in getting you up and running in no time at all.
First, if you can get hold of nifty utilities from trusted sites of the internet, then that would be easier but it can sometimes corrupt the bios of the system as it forces a program to open the said part of your computer system so be cautious and read all recommendations and instructions in the readme file so you don't cause further problems.
If you're in a hurry and don't have a second computer to do a search, you can always consult the motherboard's manual or simply look at the board for any pins that are labeled BIOS reset/normal. This is a failsafe mechanism which is built in by manufacturers into their boards to allow use of a locked system as yours.
