This winter season, big and bold is still trendy but in a different way than we saw during the Spring and Summer. Gone are the long layers of single strand necklace. This season big, chunky necklaces will be complementing outfits everywhere. Bold designs in unexpected materials are becoming quite popular on runways everywhere. A strand of baubles close to the neck with a large geometric or nature-inspired pendant adds a "wow" factor to any outfit. The purpose of jewelry this season is to make a statement and really stand out against clothing – they will be taking center stage.
Metals are very popular this winter in every accessory from necklaces to earrings to bracelets. With the price of gold and platinum at record highs however, different metals are being utilized in jewelry. These metals are much more lightweight and affordable than the traditional precious metals. Some new metals that are hitting the jewelry scene include stainless steel, titanium and copper. These metals have just as much beauty and durability as traditional gold and silver but cost much less drawing in the savvy shoppers the bad economy has created.
Some other great pieces to add to your jewelry collection this winter are bangles and large cocktail rings. These are great pieces because they are typically more affordable than necklaces so you can load up your jewelry box with a lot of options. Square bangles are very popular right now – anything with a geometric flavor. Layer them all the way up your arm for a big statement and be sure to mix different metals and textures together. When choosing cocktail rings, the bigger the better. Anything with gemstones and crystals – lots of sparkle is the perfect accent to your holiday outfit. Clear crystals and white pearls in fun, feminine shapes scream winter and can be dressed up or down.
A great way to get a bold look is to add a splash of color with your jewelry. Colors during the winter tend to be a bit darker and more neutral than in the warmer months. Remember that with these chunky pieces of jewelry, pick the outfit to match the jewelry. To get that impact with a bit of color, red is a great choice. Either bright red baubles or crimson gemstones will set off perfectly with black, grey and white. Don't match everything exactly but wear reds in the same hue for a truly fashionable look.
If you are heading out to a holiday party and want a little bit of sophistication then you can't go wrong with the classic chains and pearls. Nothing says cozy and winter like classic white pearls. Mix it up with some pretty metal chains for some sparkle and there you have it. These are great pieces to invest in because they will never go out of style and can be worn with just about anything. Layer on different length strands of pearls and chains, throw a feather in your hair for a 1920's inspired look that will keep you dancing right through New Years.

Mother's Day is right around the corner but there is still plenty of time to find the perfect gift. Mothers are very special people and they deserve the best; something that says "you're beautiful and I love you". There can be a lot of pressure to find just the right gift for mom – even though she would love a salt shaker if that's what you wrapped up! Have no fear however, mothers of all kinds are sure to love one thing – something shiny and sparkly that comes right from the heart.
When it comes to picking out jewelry for your special mom, there is a lot to choose from. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings…the list goes on and on. The best thing to do is to build on what she already owns. Does she like gold or silver? Bright colored gemstones or the classic beauty of white diamonds? Whatever your mother loves best, you will have many pieces to choose from. It is always best to pick out a piece of jewelry that you feel says, "I love you and appreciate everything you have done for me". Find something beautiful and inspirational and it will be a smash hit this Mother's Day.
A great place to start is with some sort of heart design. There are a lot of great heart shaped pendant necklaces out there to choose from. A simple, yet beautiful silver or platinum heart pendant with some inset diamonds is a sure fire hit. You can find heart shaped lockets, and chic double heart designs as well. Nothing says "I love you" like a heart and every time your mother puts on that necklace, she will think of you and smile.
Another great option for mom this Mother's Day is a charm bracelet. These have come a long way and there are a lot of great new designs to choose from. There is still the classic dangling charm bracelet that you can choose a few "mom related" charms for like a heart, some baby shoes or birthstones of all her children. There are also the Italian charm bracelets which feature the flat, slide together design. There are thousands of charms to choose from and you can customize it to any size you want. Another popular option is the Pandora charm bracelet. These bracelets have beautiful round-shaped charms that slide on over a rope like chain. This is a twist on the old classic and will give your mom some style and sophistication.
Two other great options for this Mother's Day are pearls and birthstones. Pearls have a timeless beauty about them that will never go out of style. They are classy enough to dress up for any night out on the town but can go casual for every day wear. You can never go wrong with a great pair of pearl stud earrings or a pearl necklace, in any color! Birthstones are a sentimental choice for Mother's Day. Mom's always appreciate a gift that has some thought behind it. You could customize a ring for your mom with a stone representing each of her children. There are a lot of other great options where you can customize bracelets or necklaces with birthstones as well.
No matter what you choose for mom this Mother's Day, she will be sure to love it. Just remember, with a little bit of thought and a little bit of sparkle, your mom will feel like she is on top of the world!

With the holidays fast approaching, the perfect gift for those special people around you is moving to the front of your mind. Finding the perfect gift however, can sometimes be a difficult task – especially for those people who "have everything". One classic, thoughtful gift that is always a hit is a new watch. With the fast paced world we all navigate every day, time management is more important than ever. Here are some tips for buying a new watch that can arm you with the proper knowledge to choose the perfect timepiece.
The first thing to consider when buying a watch is the material of both the case and the band. Here are some things to consider: the case of the watch is what actually protects the dial and keeps the watch moving. Most watch cases are made of some type of metal. Stainless steel is the most popular and cost efficient material. It is durable yet attractive. Another option is Titanium which has become more popular in the recent years. Titanium is much lighter than stainless steel but is a lot lighter. Of course, there are also watches out there whose cases are made of 12K, 14K and 18K gold. Keep in mind that the higher grades of gold are not as durable so consider usage when making your selection.
In addition to case material, also consider the band material. Bands come in two distinct styles – bracelet and strap. A strap watch is a great everyday style watch that can be dressed up or down. You can find straps that come in leather, fabric or nylon. Some sport watches come with rubber straps designed to stand up to heavy outdoor activity. A bracelet style watch comes in any type of precious metal you could imagine: stainless steel, titanium, platinum and gold. If this watch is only going to be worn to the office or on special occasions, a less durable more precious metal is a great, luxurious option. If the watch will be for everyday wear however, make sure you choose a metal that can stand up to everyday wear and tear.
The next piece of knowledge to have about watches is what type of movement it possesses. There are 3 different types of movement that include Quartz, mechanical and automatic. Quartz movement watches are battery powered and rely on a quartz crystal to move the watch hands in time. This type of movement is typically found in the more affordable style watches and the battery will typically have to be replaced every 1 ½ years or so. A mechanical movement watch uses a spring mechanism that you wind by hand. While you will occasionally have to re-wind your watch, if you buy a high quality mechanical watch, it can last for decades. The final type of movement is automatic. These watches utilize the energy produced by the arm of the person wearing the watch. This is a great option for anyone interested in new, fun technologies and does have the option of a manual wind-up.
There are so many different styles of watches at every price point making it the perfect gift choice for anyone. If you take a few minutes to really think about the person receiving the watch and how they will use it, the watch you give them can last them for many years. Don't become overwhelmed when browsing the cases and stick to your guns when making a decision. If you stay true to your instincts and allow the sales staff to aid you in your decision rather than make it for you, there is no doubt you will walk away a happy customer.

If you thought Angelina Jolie has shown the world all of her talents – think again. Jolie, along with her husband Brad Pitt have been working on designing a new line of jewelry for Asprey, a high-end British company. The two stars were working on this line for about a year and it was released into stores just in time for the Christmas rush.
The entire line is designed around a snake icon. This reptile has been very popular in the fashion world as of late and Jolie's designs are no exception. The concept was created entirely by Jolie and Pitt as she believes the snake is a protector of her family – thus the jewelry line is named "The Protector". Snakes as a symbol of power and protection is nothing new. Snakes have been used as protectors of temples and other sacred places for thousands of years. The snake is a popular symbol in Buddhism, relating to the story of a snake that protects Buddha during meditation.
Many of the pieces in Jolie's new line features a snake wrapped into a knot. There are rings, pendants and earrings featuring the snake in this shape. This in itself is symbolic as well. A knot has long been known to symbolize permanence, longevity and commitment. Used in conjunction with a snake, the wearer shows a long-term commitment to protecting that which is important to them. It is a powerful symbol sure to catch on quickly. Jolie is no stranger to symbols and Buddhism. She has been a long time advocate of symbols like knots and snakes – look at her tattoos.
"The Protector" line of jewelry features necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets and even a silver baby spoon all with the snake motif. All of the pieces are made with either gold or silver and feature white diamonds and other colorful gemstones like onyx and emeralds. This will be a luxury line of jewelry so most likely it will be out of the price range for most normal folks. The silver baby spoon has a handle shaped like a serpent and starts at $525. The great thing about this jewelry line is that the proceeds will go to charity. All of the proceeds from "The Protector" line will benefit Jolie's Education Partnership for Children of Conflict charity. It may be difficult to get your hands on this jewelry not only because of the price but also because it will only be available in Asprey stores in New York, London, Beverly Hills, Tokyo and Dubai.
Perhaps if the line sells well within these stores, Asprey will consider moving the line to other retailers more widely available to the public. After all, the more available the line is the more money that can be made for the charity. Jolie will most likely do the modeling for this new line and she has already been spotted wearing a necklace to the premiere of her new movie "The Tourist". While all eyes in Hollywood and fashion capitals around the world are poised to pick up these new pieces, the rest of us can only hope that something similar will be made available in the coming months!

Knot tying remains one of the true art forms practiced by sailors. For thousands of years, the skills of knot tying, line handling, and sewing were necessary skills for those who manned the great sailing ships of old. Knot boards are a popular piece of nautical decor and are actually replicas of teaching tools used to advance the craft of knot making and splicing. Decorative knot boards are not only a beautiful example of nautical decor, but they can be educational as well. Whether you want to accent the theme of a single room or entire house, decorative knot boards and nautical decor has something for everybody.
Maintaining a seagoing sailing ship meant that sailors had to have the skills to plane wood, mend sails, and tie knots. Far out to sea and many miles from land, and often without access to other resources, many of the skills sailors developed were born out of necessity. Marlinspike seamanship refers to this collective set of skills. Resembling a long, tapered awl, a marlinspike is a tool used to pry apart strands of rope. The marlinspike remains a vital piece of gear for any deckhand.
Knot tying is an essential skill for any sailor. Names used for various knots are thought to come from several sources. The name would describe the type of knot. Bends, hitches, bowlines and loops all have specific uses and can be seen in various configurations. Most often, the name is synonymous with the shape of the knot.
The most basic type of knot is the square knot. Also known as a reef knot, the knot takes on a square shape when it is properly tied. Square knots are quite strong and are used to join rope of equal size. A wrongly tied square knot is called a granny knot. When faced with two lengths of rope of different diameters, a sailor would use a sheepshank or sheep bend. The manner in which the ropes wrap around each other creates a very strong bond.
Vital to the keeping a ship seaworthy, ropes, lines, and shrouds need constant care and maintenance. Anyone who has used a length of rope knows all too well that the end of the rope is prone to fray. A back splice would used in order to keep the end of a rope from fraying. This technique involves separating the strands of rope and weaving the strands back into the body of the rope. An alternative to back splicing is called whipping. Heavy thread would be tightly wound around the end of the rope, securing it.
Due to constant wear and tear, it was common for lines to break over time and a technique known as long splicing was used to rejoin the broken sections. Like welding is to metal, splicing creates a bond that is stronger than the rope itself. The process is similar to the back splice where the strands are woven into the body of the rope. Other variations of splicing that serve a particular need such as an eye splice create a strong loop at the end of the line.
Many of us are familiar with the art of macrame. Very popular during the nineteen sixties and seventies, macrame is decorative rope work that has been practiced by sailors for centuries. Sailors are well known for practicing this ancient art and examples of this unique craft can be seen on modern ships.
Knot boards, in addition to being decorative can be educational as well. As a piece of nautical decor, the knot board is a great way display the ancient and important art of knotting, splicing, and decorative weaving.

While flowers and chocolates are always in fashion, the one gift that every woman will always appreciate is jewelry. As February approaches jewelers across the country and around the world are gearing up to help men that have waited too long to visit their local jewelry store.
What to get the woman in your life is largely dependent on her lifestyle, her taste, and much you're willing to spend (which can be directly proportionate to how much you've screwed up lately). With options like necklaces, rings, earrings, and even watches out there, here are few things to consider about each.
Necklaces
First of all, if you have small children, you may want to reconsider a necklace, however, necklaces are a great Valentine's present due to their versatility. Whereas some other jewelry may be better suited for either casual or formal settings, with few exceptions, necklaces can work great with jeans and a t-shirt or a nice formal dress.
Aside from being versatile with her attire, necklaces also have the advantage of coming in a variety of sizes and styles, ranging from gold and silver, with or without gems, and in varying lengths to fit every taste and style.
Watches and Bracelets
The first thing to consider when looking at either a watch or bracelet is whether the person you're buying it for is a watch or bracelet person. Some people just don't like to have things around their wrists and nothing ruins an amazing present like a lack of use. That being said, the second thing to consider when looking at bracelets and watches is how formal you want to get. Both bracelets and watches are pieces of fine jewelry, and how fine you want to get will greatly affect what you end up getting.
Whether you want to get a bracelet covered in diamonds or a watch that gives the time zone in Batswana, keep in mind what setting you want the person you're buying it for to wear it in. If you're looking for a more formal gift, stick with a tennis bracelet. If you're more interested in getting them a gift they can use every day, a nice watch can be classy and stylish, but still work with a wider variety of clothing styles to allow for more use.
Earrings
Earrings, much like necklaces, are great because of their versatility and availability at numerous jewelry stores. When considering earrings keep in mind any small children as they tend to grab long, dangling earrings, which can result in injuries. Earrings can come in studs, hoops, and dangles, and are available in a variety of different golds, silver, and, of course, diamonds. If you're not sure what kind of earrings your wife or girlfriend might like, simply take a peek in her jewelry box to see what kind she has the most of. Most people buy a specific style based on what they enjoy the most.
Rings
Buying a ring for somebody at Valentine's Day doesn't mean you have to buy a diamond engagement ring. Fashion rings are a very popular way to give somebody a ring that shows you care without having to pop the question. Fine jewelry such as an emerald or ruby ring is perfect for those that enjoy their birth stones or have a favorite color. For those that are already married, Valentine's Day is a great time to upgrade the diamond engagement ring you bought her when you first asked her to marry you. She said yes then, but a new, nicer ring will have her saying yes all over again.
Get Out There
Just because you've waited until the last minute to buy her something for Valentine's Day doesn't mean there's nothing out there. Do some quick research, talk to your local New York, Los Angeles, and Richmond jewelers, and make sure you get her something that will make her smile – be it earrings, necklaces, watches, bracelets, or rings.

For thousands of years, different cultures have been using gemstones as symbols for various parts of their lives and traditions. One major part of western culture is the use of different gemstones to represent the month of a person's birth. It seems that this tradition dates all the way back to Hebrew times and the Old Testament. As culture progressed, the gemstones became related to each sign of the zodiac. This eventually progressed into a tradition of people wearing their birthstone as jewelry in the sixteenth century. With the spring months coming upon us quickly, let's take a look at the birthstones representing these months of renewal.
March is truly the kickoff of the spring season with everyone shedding their cozy sweaters for lighter and brighter clothes and accessories. The birthstone for March is Aquamarine. This gemstone is a pale blue stone that looks just like clear, tropical sea water. The name aquamarine, means, literally, "water". This is a fitting stone to represent March as Aquamarine has been known to represent healing and renewal. While most Aquamarine stones are a pale blue color, they can be found in various shades from a green-blue to sky blue. A unique quality of Aquamarine is that they are flawless stones. Because of this, Aquamarine also represents security and is a popular gift for a wedding anniversary.
Moving on from March into April, we see continued renewal and life begin to take shape. The birthstone for April is the diamond. The diamond is possibly the world's most recognized and popular gemstone. With its crystal clear color that is able to reflect light to make it look like fire, diamonds are simply a stunning stone. Diamonds are also the hardest surface found on the planet. For centuries, diamonds have been a symbol of strength, enduring love and brilliance. While the white diamonds are the most popular, they come in other colors such as yellow, pink, blue, green and even chocolate brown.
By the time May rolls around, spring is in full bloom and everything is full of life again. So, it is appropriate that the birthstone for May is the Emerald. With its bright green color, nothing says birth and renewal like an Emerald. The Emerald has, for centuries, symbolized rebirth, fertility and eternal youth. In the days of ancient Egyptians, Cleopatra chose the Emerald as her favorite stone and wore it all the time. Emeralds are a gemstone that has many inclusions within them, but unlike many stones, these inclusions don't necessarily reduce the value of the stone. While Emeralds area relatively hard stone, they still have to be worn with caution because the inclusions make them susceptible to breakage. In more recent times, the Emerald has become a popular anniversary gift as many people believe it represents growth and wisdom.
If you have a special someone with a spring birthstone, there are so many options out there. Be it a man or a woman, a child or a grandparent, there are many appropriate gifts available that will commemorate your loved one's birth month with beauty and grace.

Even though winter is in full swing, the fashion world is looking forward to Spring 2011. New trends, new colors, new designs will hit the runways and streets just as the flowers start to bloom. Spring is a time of renewal and nothing feels better than to refresh some of your tired accessories to give you a brand new look for the season. This spring season may not be bringing many major trend changes when it comes to jewelry but new color palettes and motifs are just the thing to bring a refresher to your jewelry box.
Some of the color combinations popular for the coming season are black and white, brown and coral, and blue and green. Again, nothing major – just fresh. A great way to freshen up your color palette is to use a rich, deep color like indigo and pair it up with a bright color like green. Take the still popular tarnished metals and match it up with some white or be bold and mix bright orange with coral. Brown is huge for the spring season so use it everywhere you can. Mix up your textures using heavy ones with light. All of these combinations will make your accessories feel brand new.
Also big for the spring is bright colors with glossy finishes, reminiscent of the early 90's. Anything with an epoxy finish is a guaranteed hit. Go big and bold on your wrists wearing big cuffs or layered bangles. If you want to achieve this look but need something a bit more practical for the daytime, look for bracelets with lots of bright colored charms. If bracelets are too much, you can always get a great look with earrings. Choose lightweight designs in bright colors and fun patterns in simple forms like discs. A great pair of earrings will always give you a signature look without a lot of cost or hassle.
The nature motif is still popular for Spring 2011 so have fun with it. Go crazy with animal prints in a brown color palette and knock your look out of the park. Be careful not to overdo the animal print; wear only one or two accessories with the pattern – you don't want to actually look like a cheetah! Other nature inspired pieces like snakes and flowers will be everywhere. Choose a few big, bold pieces to complement your outfits in a range of materials and colors. Make sure to layer your look with heavy metals and more feminine pieces like ribbon or pearls.
As with all seasons, classic fashion never goes out of style, so your classic diamonds and pearls are a surefire way to look your best without putting yourself out of your comfort zone with a style you're not sure is "you". You shouldn't be too shy to try some classic pieces with some of the newer trends. Life is made for living, and living well means feeling your best.
Go ahead and rock your favorite of the new trends and remember, summer is just around the corner from spring, and there will be a lot more new fashions to look forward to.

The hot days of summer have faded away and autumn is officially upon us. Before you know it, the holiday shopping season will be here so, planning and preparation needs to begin! If you think about the purchases you will make during the holidays ahead of time, you can keep a sharp eye out for the best deals and even spread out your purchases making the season a bit easier on the wallet. One of the most popular holiday purchases is jewelry. With the price of gold through the roof, you might think that nice, quality jewelry is out of your price range but, think again. Some of the hottest trends for the 2010 winter season take your wallet into consideration without sacrificing on style.
One of the first trends you will see this winter is faux gemstones in translucent yet bright colors. This can be a great way to own some fantastic looking jewelry while saving some cash. If you go for either acrylic or resin gemstones, they look very much like the real thing. In order to keep the quality high, find pieces that mix faux gemstones with genuine metals like silver and gold. You can most likely find some great deals on genuine gemstone jewelry when the holiday sales start after Thanksgiving. This is one of the best times to buy and retailers will want to push their stock out the doors. Even if you buy genuine gemstones, go for the translucent look – it will keep you stylish all winter long.
Another hot trend for the winter season is textured jewelry. This trend looks great with both vintage clothing that is popular this year and the big cozy pieces the winter months require. Wearing textured jewelry is a great way to really personalize your look. You can find some truly unique pieces that will enhance your everyday outfits. When looking for textured jewelry find pieces like hammered metals and woven threads of gold. Anything with dimension will look fabulous throughout the season dressed up or down. Textured jewelry is another great way to save some money on quality jewelry. If you find pieces that are strictly metal with no gemstones, your wallet won't feel quite as empty.
Motif jewelry is another trend that is continuing into the winter season from the spring and summer. Bold, nature inspired pieces continue to be popular. Daring themes like snakes, elephants, birds and flowers are everywhere in the jewelry world right now. Snake rings and cuffs, elephant pendants, flower brooches all in subtle, matte metal finishes are the perfect complement to the soft, earthy colors of winter. Make sure that you buy motif jewelry in designs that you feel comfortable wearing and won't overpower you. Keep the outfit crisp and clean to let the accessories take center stage. Don't be afraid to buy bold pieces like snakes with emerald eyes or birds with diamond accents. If you invest in the right pieces, they will quickly become some of the favorite pieces you own.

There are a lot of trends that come and go quite quickly in the fashion world and it can be hard to keep up with all of them. One trend making a comeback recently is costume jewelry. This type of jewelry has been around for hundreds of years but its popularity wavers with each decade. Costume jewelry is meant to be short lived, inexpensive and often tailored to match a specific outfit. It is very affordable so purchasing and disposing of pieces doesn't hurt the wallet too badly.
To make costume jewelry pieces more affordable, they are typically crafted out of more inexpensive materials such as base metals, glass and synthetic gemstones. Costume jewelry really took off in the early twentieth century and made popular by Coco Chanel in the late 1920's. During this time, often known as the Art Deco period, costume jewelry was made of rhinestones and Lucite, set in inexpensive metals like brass and nickel. Coco Chanel completed many of her designs with accessories like cocktail rings, bangles and long pendants. Typical of the Art Deco period, costume jewelry was very geometrical with harsh lines. Unfortunately, when the Great Depression set in, costume jewelry faded into the past as a luxury of the 20's flapper era.
The next time costume jewelry made an appearance was in the late 1930's, after the Depression had subsided. This era is often referred to as the Retro period and lasted until about 1950. During this time, America was in economic recovery and jewelry designers were beginning to produce pieces with a true American feel. Plastic was becoming a very popular material and designers began using it in conjunction with metals. The costume jewelry of these decades were very "old Hollywood" brimming with elegance and sophistication. This was the time of the Audry Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie O who often endorsed designers of these elegant costume pieces.
Once the designs of the Retro period faded, a new era of costume jewelry emerged. Until around 1960, costume jewelry took on a big, bold look. During this Art Modern period, big chunky bracelets, pins and charm bracelets were all the rage. This was the time when many well known designers were adorning starlets with their costume pieces. While most costume jewelry isn't seen as collectible, certain pieces from this time period are very highly sought after.
Today, vintage pieces of costume jewelry are quickly becoming the accessory to own. There are still many companies producing new pieces of costume jewelry but vintage is the name of the game. There has been some controversy over newly produced costume jewelry after certain pieces were found to have high levels of cadmium. As a result, costume jewelry enthusiasts look for vintage pieces or original pieces created by small-time artists. Online sites like Etsy have become quite popular to seek out one-of-a-kind accessories for fashionistas. Shopping sites and artists like these also help enable the local economy and lines right up with the "green" trend that is so popular right now.
If you are out shopping for costume jewelry today, look for anything big, bold and brightly colored. Large beads, gemstones and metals like copper and brass are very trendy right now. Large cocktail rings and piles of bangles are the perfect way to make a statement with your outfits. Find inexpensive pieces that you will be able to wear with a couple different outfits and get ready to feel your money stretch while you look fabulous every time you leave the house.

Picking out jewelry for someone special doesn't have to be an arduous task. If the decision seems too great, know that you can always turn to birthstone jewelry for the perfect, well-thought out gift. Choosing a piece of jewelry with that special someone's birthstone makes the gift that much more personal. And, while there are the traditional stones associated with each month, you don't necessarily have to go with the person's birth month. Instead, choose a stone of the month of your anniversary, or another extraordinary moment like the birth of your first child. A gift of this caliber is always sure to please.
Let's start with January and February. The birthstone for January is garnet. This is typically a beautiful deep red stone but, it possible to find garnet in shades of green, yellow and orange as well. Garnet is the perfect choice for a January stone because the color red represents strength, energy and new life. The birthstone for February is amethyst. Compared to the fiery boldness of the garnet, amethyst is a much more calming gemstone. Its rich purple color varies from a very light purple to deep, dark shades of plum. Also quite fittingly, amethyst represents February well as it symbolizes healing, wisdom and spirituality.
March's birthstone is the tranquil aquamarine. This is a beautiful stone ranging in color from light blue to blue to blue-green and resembles tropical blue waters. The word "aqua" in aquamarine literally means water and symbolizes youth, tranquility and confidence. Aquamarine is very readily available and therefore, affordable. When shopping for this stone however, don't mistake a blue topaz for an aquamarine as can look quite similar. The birthstone for the month of April is the diamond. In quite a sharp contrast to the aquamarine, this stone can often break the budget. It is possible to find a beautiful, clear looking diamond without spending a fortune and to the naked eye, it will look flawless. Diamonds are associated most times with weddings and engagements and represent purity, freshness and humility. It is often considered the ultimate in gemstones as white literally contains and reflects every color of the rainbow.
The month of May brings us to the regal Emerald. This stunning green stone can be very attractive to the eye and looks good in just about any sort of cut. This gemstone is both very beautiful and very rare. Again, this is the perfect stone for the month of May as the green represents fertility, growth and prosperity – just right to welcome spring. June's birthstone is the pearl. This is a beautiful, versatile stone available in many different settings. What's great about the pearl is the fact that you can find it in just about any color imaginable. Much like the diamond, the pearl represents purity and innocence and is another popular stone for wedding jewelry.
Now that we are into the summer time, July brings us back to bold, fiery color with the Ruby. This is another stunning red or pink stone that is well known in the jewelry world. The ruby is a fantastic stone because of the immense range of colors in which it exists. The ruby symbolizes love, compassion, energy and excitement. Keeping up with the brilliant colors comes August with its birthstone of peridot. This is a lesser known stone as it often times takes a backseat to the emerald. The peridot however, is a gorgeously understated gemstone with a fabulous yellow-green color that fits in perfectly with nature.
September brings us back to another brilliant blue stone – the sapphire. The sapphire comes in many shades of blue and is the most sought after blue gemstone. Because of the wide variety of color, it should be easy to find just the perfect one when out shopping. The blue sapphire represents harmony, stability and loyalty. Even if this isn't the birth month of your special someone, if you present them a sapphire with a note of how it represents your relationship, you have a sure-fire hit. The birthstone for October is the opal. This is a very unique stone as it comes in a multitude of colors. Similar to that of a pearl, many opals have an iridescent quality to them that flashes brilliant colors when the light hits it from different angles. Opals can be found in pretty much every color to yellow, orange, red, blue, green, brown and black and are very valuable.
The birthstone for November is the yellow topaz. This is a very creamy colored stone with soft coloring. The yellow topaz is the most valuable of all the colors of topaz. This yellow stone represents optimism, happiness and intellect. This could be the perfect stone for someone who appreciates soft, understated beauty. The final month of December has the blue topaz as its birthstone. The blue topaz has a very light, clear color to the stone and reflects light beautifully. This blue stone represents patience, refreshment and peace, making it the perfect stone to signify the end of one year and the start of another.

Getting engaged is one of the happiest times in a girl's life and one of the most stressful for the guys. Will she say yes? Will she like the ring? Is it the right time? So many questions are running through your mind, the last thing you should worry about is whether or not you have the perfect ring. It can be a tough job for guys though, picking out a piece of jewelry she will wear for the rest of her life. You know her quite well – but her taste in silver and diamonds? That's a whole different ball game. Here are some tips on what to look for when shopping for engagement rings, what's trendy right now and how to know you've picked the perfect ring.
There are four trends in engagement rings right now to keep your eye out for – vintage, solitaire, garden-inspired style and rose gold. What's great about these trends is that they are on the cutting edge of fashion but still timeless enough to be stylish for years to come. An important thing to do before hitting the stores is to be observant. Spend a week or so really paying attention to the kind of accessories your future fiancée wears. If you never see her wear gold, a gold engagement ring probably isn't the best choice. You should go with something in platinum or white gold. If she wears a wide variety of styles and metals, chances are you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. With a girl like this, you can go with a bold style and she is sure to love it. If she doesn't wear much jewelry at all, your best bet is to go with something very simple and classic.
Let's start with the vintage style engagement rings. Vintage style is back with a vengeance and is great for any girl who loves classic but bold style. Vintage style engagement rings typically have large and unique settings like a spiral or pyramid. True vintage rings are also one-of-a-kind. They have intricate designs on the band which adds to the bold look. Vintage rings also usually have big, heavy cut diamonds with tons of sparkle. These rings have a timeless, old Hollywood feel to them. If you want a truly unique ring, go vintage.
Styles inspired by nature are everywhere this year and engagement rings are no exception. There are some beautiful garden-inspired styles out there that are sure to make any girl feel special. If your girl loves to be really girly and fashionable, this style is for her. Garden-inspired styles typically have a bunch of diamonds set onto the center of the band in some sort of flower shape. These rings usually have round, oval and or pear cut diamonds with tons of sparkle. The actual setting is simple, almost invisible. The real draw comes from how the diamonds are laid out on the band. The bands are typically very simple, with little or no design to them. A garden-inspired engagement ring will grab attention for years to come.
Another simple engagement ring style that has become extremely popular is the solitaire ring. Solitaire rings have a timeless, classic appeal. These rings have become quite popular in the celebrity world. If you want to go with a ring that is simple yet stunning and will never go out of style, choose the solitaire. Solitaire engagement rings have the obvious solitaire diamond set in the center of the band. This style will give you the most versatility when shopping and is also the most traditional. Solitaire rings have a modern look to them with thick, solid bands and clean lines. You can find the diamond in any shape you want whether it is round, emerald, pear, oval or square. You just can't go wrong with this timeless style.
The last trend to keep your eyes out for when ring shopping is rose gold. This soft, pinkish colored gold has become increasingly popular and can be a great alternative to yellow gold. You can find some stunning and unique engagement rings in rose gold. There are styles with one solitaire diamond on the top and small diamonds running the entire diameter of the band. Another unique option would be go with a ring that has a large emerald cut stone in yellow or green. You can also find platinum rings with a rose gold setting. The pinkish gold against the brilliant silver is gorgeous. There are so many different styles to choose from but if your girl is a fan of gold, she will be pleasantly surprised at the thought you put in to picking out a rose gold ring.

Buying a diamond can seem to be an overwhelming task, especially when you want to get the most bang for your buck. You want to feel knowledgeable and confident when you are browsing the jewelry cases. With a little bit of research and planning, you can walk into a jewelry store and find the best deal on exactly what you want.
There is a lot of information and many different aspects to buying diamond jewelry, so don't get overwhelmed by the choices. It's important to know what you want before you walk into the store so you end up with exactly what you want, and not what the salesman wanted you to buy. The first thing to think about before making a purchase is exactly what kind of piece of jewelry you want (ring, necklace, bracelet, etc.) and what style. Do you want something classic and timeless or trendy and bold? Only looking at the style of jewelry you want will save you a lot of time once you actually step into a store. The best way to figure out the style you want is to be observant. If you are buying for someone else, pay attention for a week or two to what kind of jewelry they already wear on a daily basis. This will give you good clues as to whether they are fashion forward or simple and sleek. Another great place to get ideas is the internet. A simple online search will bring up thousands of pictures that can give you some great inspiration.
After you have a good idea about what style jewelry you want, the next step is to set a budget. Once you set a budget, stick to it. You will feel extra good about your purchase if you walk away with exactly what you want at the price you wanted to spend. A budget will also help you in understanding the quality of a diamond you can expect to afford. When looking at quality in a diamond, you want to look for the "Four C's" – cut, clarity, color and carat. Understanding a little bit about each of these characteristics will help you make a confident purchase.
Let's start with the first "C", cut. There are a ton of different options when it comes to choosing a cut for your diamond. The first important thing to understand about cut is that it is different than a diamond's shape. The cut refers specifically to a diamond's reflective qualities. Different cuts will give diamonds a different level of brilliance or sparkle. There are five different levels of cut for diamonds – Ideal, Premium, Very Good, Good, and Fair/Poor. When it comes to cut, it is really about personal preference. Of course, the better the cut, the more valuable the diamond. However, it is possible to have a modestly cut diamond that is still very high quality.
The next important "C" to understand about diamonds is clarity. The clarity of a diamond refers to the amount of inclusions or blemishes within the diamond. Inclusions are internal flaws while blemishes are external or surface flaws. It is very rare to find a perfect diamond with no inclusions, and like cut, there are different levels of clarity. The different grades of clarity for a diamond are F, IF, VVS1 – VVS2, VS1 – VS2, SI1 – SI2, I1 – I2 – I3. A diamond with a grade of F is considered flawless and is very rare. An IF diamond is internally flawless with only some surface flaws and is also very rare. A diamond graded as VVS1 – VVS2 is very very slightly included while a VS1 – VS2 diamond is very slightly included. Diamonds of these grades still look magnificent to the human eye with inclusions being visible only under magnification. An SI1 – SI2 diamond is considered slightly included with inclusions being easily detected under magnification but not to the human eye. The lowest grade, I1 – I2 – I3 have inclusions visible both under magnification and to the human eye.
Another important characteristic of diamonds is their color. When it comes to color (as part of the "Four C's) people are usually referring to the color of a white diamond. The more colorless a diamond, the more light it allows through, enhancing its brilliance. Professional jewelers grade a diamonds color on a scale that begins with the letter D, which refers to a completely colorless diamond (very rare) then travels through the alphabet all the way to Z. Diamonds with a color grade of D to F are very rare and very valuable. Diamonds graded from G to I still appear colorless to the naked eye and will still be a brilliant in a piece of jewelry. Diamonds graded J to M will have a slight yellow or brownish color to them, visible to the naked eye.
The final "C" for buying diamonds is carat. This refers to the actual size of a diamond. One carat is equal to 0.2 grams. When it comes to determining carat, it really depends on your budget. Obviously, the larger the carat, the more expensive the diamond. Now, this is not a flawless system. It is possible to afford a larger diamond if you are willing to sacrifice on some of the other qualities like color and clarity. It all really depends on what you are comfortable with purchasing and what you think will look the best. Buying diamonds is an investment and they will last for generations if cared for properly. So, take your time and hit the stores with knowledge and you will be a confident diamond customer.

Whether we like it or not, Hollywood and its celebrities have a huge influence on pop culture and the everyday lives and purchases of regular people. Movies have been inspiring trends ever since the very first film was released. Fashion trends, behavior trends and vacation spots are all inspired by Hollywood. This isn't necessarily a bad thing and it gives us regular folk a place to turn when we need a little inspiration in our lives. Jewelry is one trend that is heavily influenced by films and the stars in them. Whether you are looking for simple and sweet jewelry or pieces with a touch of couture, there is sure to be a Hollywood designer to suit your taste.
This year, there have been some huge blockbuster films that have pop culture enthusiasts on the edge of their seats. High end jewelry designers are set to release quite a few lines inspired by some of the biggest films of the year. The first line by big name department store Nordstrom, comes directly from the craze that is the Twilight series. This is the jewelry line for all those youngsters dying to have a piece of Edward or Jacob by them at all times. This line of jewelry more has a purpose of showing your fanaticism and leans towards a "I heart Edward" pendant. There is no doubt however that this jewelry line will be huge just like the series itself.
For those consumers hoping to show a bit more fashion forward style inspired by the silver screen, look to designer Pamela Love who is set to release a line of jewelry inspired by the move Where the Wild Things Are. Her line is definitely gothic cool with tons of hammered metals, claws, teeth and leather. Look for big cuff bracelets (which are hot this season!), kitschy charm bracelets, leather cuffs and claw necklaces in heavy metals.
Another movie to inspire a jewelry line set to be released this year was Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Funky designer Tom Binns created an entire line based off this avant-garde film. Tom Binns is a favorite jewelry designer of First Lady, Michelle Obama, and designed many of the statement necklaces she has been seen wearing. Binn's Alice in Wonderland jewelry line is fun, funky and for those not afraid of some bold accessories. This line features heavily layered accessories like bead and chain statement necklaces and lots of red and black.
Not only can you find jewelry inspired by the year's hottest films but there are also lots of great options out there for imitation celebrity jewelry. You can find some fabulous pieces of jewelry created by designers that emulate jewelry worn by some of Hollywood's biggest stars. There are beautiful diamond "bling bling" earrings like those worn by Marilyn Monroe, a chartreuse and diamond cocktail ring like the one worn by Lana Turner and a diamond link bracelet worn by Jean Harlow. Whether it is theme jewelry inspired by the silver screen or jewelry worn by Hollywood's biggest stars, there are plenty of designers out there keeping an eye on the stars to help you channel that Hollywood glamour.

Today, any desk can be a computer desk. In this age of smaller desktop computer systems, virtually any desk can be used for your computer. Laptop computers are becoming more popular and have changed the way we look at our work environment. Computer Desks and computer armories have become part of list of home furniture necessities.
In the early days of the personal computer, electric typewriters, Dictaphones and other types of electronic office equipment were still in wide use. As for early personal computers, the typical setup included the computer, or CPU, the keyboard and a monitor. Early monitors for PCs were on the small side and were often placed atop the CPU. As the size of the monitor increased, the CPU found itself pushed off to the side.
The CPUs of early personal computers had to close at hand for a reason. The first personal computers did not have hard disk drives and the practice of networking personal computers together was still in the planning stages. With no hard drive, the CPU typically had two or more floppy disk drives. In order to access various software programs and data files, the user needed to constantly exchange disks. The cabinet or CPU enclosure could by quite large and took up lots of space.
As video technology advanced, the size of the monitors grew larger. Since the video technology of the time was based on the soon to be obsolete cathode ray tube. Early computer monitors were essentially televisions without the tuner. Just as with television, the larger the monitor screen, the larger the CRT had to be.
Throw in enough room for the keyboard and it is easy to see that users of early personal computers really had a desk full of equipment to contend with. Now add all of the floppy disks and a telephone and very little room was left over for what might be described as desk work.
The Incredible Shrinking Computer
Through the nineteen nineties, the desktop personal computer started to go through a facelift of sorts. The flat boxes that had made up the CPU enclosure were turned on end. These tower enclosures created more space on the average desk in two important ways. The tower design had a much smaller footprint, taking up less room on the desk. Tower enclosures could also be placed on the floor near the desk, creating even more work space. This left only the monitor and the keyboard on the desktop.
Even the monitor became less of beast as liquid crystal display technology became more affordable. The LCD monitor presented a flat screen in a very thin housing, allowing the user to have a much larger display that took up less desktop space.
Enter Computer Desks and Armoires
As personal computer sales grew, so did the demand for desks and work stations which provided adequate work space and a clean appearance. Largely due the efforts of companies like Sauder Furniture, specialized computer desks and computer armoires found a ready market. In the early nineteen hundreds, Sauder introduced a line of enclosed computer work stations for the home furniture market. The pieces introduced by Sauder were based on the companys popular concept of ready to assemble furniture.
Additional equipment such as printers and scanners, along with storage space for computer accessories like user manuals and diskettes drove the design of the computer desk. Multi tiered desktops, storage cabinets and predrilled holes for cables and wires afforded users the opportunity to better organize their work space.
Computer armoires were an instant market success. Taking a cue from the ages old clothing armoire, makers of computer furniture like Sauder, designed computer work stations that made very efficient use of space. Users were able to store and access to the computer and all of the peripheral equipment in a single unit that could be closed when not needed. Specialized chairs were available that could be stored in the armoire saving even more space.

Article Title: Sofa Tables Are Rooted In Practicality

*********************** ARTICLE START ***********************
A common piece of accent furniture, the sofa table was once thought of as a necessity. The precursor of the modern coffee table, the development of the sofa table was tied to other significant changes in furniture design.
Following most of the design conventions of the time, sofa table began to appear around the seventeen hundreds. Sofas and settees were known for featuring a high, decorative back. As the design of the sofa changed and the back was lowered, the availability of space intrigued furniture designers and spawned changes in how the average living was laid out.
The hearth or fireplace was often the center and focus of a common room. Chairs and sofas were typically located very near the hearth. The purpose of course was to take advantage of the warmth of the fire and the light created. Contrary to what most of us do today, the sofa or settee was not placed up against a wall. Instead, the sofa piece was located in the center of the room or near the hearth.
A number of different tables were once considered sofa tables and were loosely defined as any table used near the sofa. The sofa table as we know it is found in the back of the sofa. Usually quite long and narrow in width, the modern sofa table serves as more of a decorative piece. Sofa tables come in many styles, from the contemporary to the baroque.
Thought to originate during the late seventeen and early eighteen hundreds, the design of the sofa table was very intentional. The upholstered sofa that we are familiar with today did not appear until the seventeen hundreds. Prior to that period, the settee was the standard. Characterized by an ornate wood frame, a settee would have upholstered seat and back, leaving the rest of the frame exposed. I have no doubt that the availability of cloth drove the trend towards the minimal use of upholstered surfaces.
Starting in the late eighteenth century, as the Industrial Revolution begin to pick up speed, fabrics weaving changed dramatically. Fabric weaving moved quickly from a cottage industry to mass production. As the cost for fabric dropped, new uses for it grew. It was during this period that the fully upholstered couch began to replace the settee. It is thought that the sofa table was designed specifically as an accompaniment to the upholstered sofa.
The Pembroke table best epitomizes the early history of the sofa table. Many table designs that we use today had their genesis in the Pembroke style. A drop leaf section was a characteristic of the Pembroke style and could be a single leaf or two. Another important feature distinguishes a Pembroke from other table designs. A Pembroke is known to feature a drawer and often will have two drawers. With the leaves in the down position, the table top takes on a rectangular shape. With the leaves in the up position, a Pembroke table top will be more or less a square.
The Pembroke served as a very practical piece of furniture and was far from merely a decorative table. The leaf design was combined with a center pedestal configuration which facilitated a comfortable seating position. The Pembroke could be stored against a wall, but the decorative look of the table often had it in the center of the room, or behind a sofa. Locating the table behind the sofa provided a location for a lamp or just somewhere to set your teacup.
Many modern sofa tables feature some aspect of the Pembroke including drawers and leaves. The leaves on a sofa table are usually found in the table ends, and do not run the length of the table.

Gone are the days of the old dusty, sometimes musty basement wine cellar. Gone is the need to rely solely on the ambient conditions downstairs. Today, wine cabinets have replaced the venerable cellar. Like hi tech wine cellars, wine cabinets feature clean lines, energy efficiency and modern temperature controls. With exterior cabinet designs that range from the modern to the classical, wines cabinets and home bars are available that will blend in to almost any decorating scheme.
The wine industry in America is booming like never before. Industry figures indicate that there has been a seventy percent increase in the number of domestic wineries since the year two thousand and two. Sales of wine produced in the United States exceeded eleven billion dollars in the year two thousand and seven. With the growth of the domestic wine industry has come an increased demand for wine related products like wine cabinets.
Americans are adopting a more casual attitude towards wine. We have broken down the stereotypical image of the effete wine snob and embraced many of the benefits associated with moderate wine consumption. Many doctors are advising patients to consume red white on a daily basis. It is important to point out that doctors are not advocating downing a bottle of merlot every evening. The advice stresses moderation, perhaps a glass of red wine over dinner. Moderate consumption of red wine is shown to aid digestion and has cardiovascular benefits.
Even as the debate rages over which wine to serve with the chicken, many wine drinkers are busy rewriting the rules. Many folks are opting for a wine that tastes good with whatever food they happen to be eating. The traditional interpretation has been that red wines are served with red meats and game fowl. The white wines were reserved for lighter dishes containing fish or chicken. Today, even rose wines have gained respectability as the perfect accompaniment for almost any dinner faire.
Recreating the environment of a premium wine cellar is easy with a wine cabinet. If you need to store just a few bottles, a small countertop wine cabinet might be the perfect choice. For many wine aficionados, collecting vintage wines is more than just a hobby. An alternative to the wine cellar, a larger wine cabinet can hold several hundred bottles. Not only can a wine cabinet hold lots of your favorite vintage, the temperature can be precisely controlled.
An important feature of many wine cabinets is a multi zone design. The multi zone feature allows you to store different wines at different temperatures. For example, most white wines should be stored at a lower temperature than red wines. A good white wine, chilled to proper temperature will yield the flavors and qualities intended by the vintner. Red wines are not normally chilled, but rather are best held at just below room temperature. Rose wines can be chilled, or not, depending on your individual tastes.
For many wine connoisseurs, the humble rose wine has not been held in very high regard. In fact, most wine snobs I know consider any rose wine to be no more than a pop wine. Over the last few years, rose varieties have gained a great deal of respectability, in spite of this bit of wine snobbery. Thought of by many wine consumers to be light and flavorful, roses have broken down many of the so called rules regarding wine drinking.
Whatever your favorite vintage, color or taste preference, a quality wine cabinet will help preserve the best of what wine has to offer. In combination with a home bar, a wine cabinet will protect your investment and enhance your wine experience.

Yes, pets are people too. At least they are at our house. We treat our pets just like members of the family and they respond with unconditional love, and the occasional chewed up slipper. Sharing our home with several cats and dogs gives us a chance to observe how their individual personalities. Like people, animals do display emotions and behaviors that closely mimic those of humans.
Some so called experts downplay the notion that animals possess a level of emotional self awareness and that they act purely on instinct. While it is true that many species of animals imprint on their humans, the emotions displayed by our pets go beyond mere instinct.
Dogs Are from Mars and Cats are From Venus
Like the age old battle of the sexes, dogs and cats could not be more different. The commonly accepted stereotype is that cats are aloof, self centered and finicky. On the other hand, dogs are affable and willing to please, wearing their emotions on their fore paw if you will. Like some sort of weird permutation, I have had dogs who acted like cats and cats who acted like dogs. So much for the practice of applying stereotypes to animal behavior.
Now before I go too far off the deep end, I must confess to not being an expert in animal behavior. My conclusions are solely based on observing our pets. The loyalty and love that our pets give us must certainly come from a place that transcends mere instinct. One cat that is too cool for school while the other talks up storm, and dogs who display emotions ranging from deep sadness to sheer joy. Yes, animals are people too.
We Pamper Our Pets
The market for pet care products has grown right along side the increase in pet ownership. Thinking of pet care products, most of us naturally think about the basics of food, grooming supplies and those very important treats. More than just the basics, there are more pet related products available than ever before. When I say beyond the basics, I mean way beyond the basics.
For our four legged friends, there is a variety of products that reflect the level to which we pamper them. Heated beds, air conditioned doghouses and clothing are just a few ways we can pamper out four legged companions. Now in our house, a heated doggie bed would not get much use. Despite my weak protests, the dogs, and the cats, find their way into our bed. For other folks, a heated pet bed makes a perfect addition to their home. Older dogs and cats, especially ones with a touch of arthritis or other medical conditions may benefit from a heated bed.
We keep several barn cats fed and well cared for, including giving them a warm place to sleep. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a heated cat bed designed for outdoor use. Now by outdoor I mean it is designed for a location that is out of the weather. Feral cats can be pretty resourceful when it comes to finding a cozy place to sleep. Our hay loft is favorite spot for one of our outdoor cats. But I think he would quickly abandon the hay bales in favor of a heated cat cozy.
Our Fish Friends
Even our fish are enjoying the benefits of the new novelty aquariums. Decorative and functional, novelty aquariums are easy to setup and maintain. I would not look for your tetra to sit up and beg, but these new aquariums can bring a smile to your face.
There are literally thousands of new products for our pets. Most of all, the emphasis on pet care and pet ownership can not help but bring humans and animals closer together. The greater the understanding humans have about the animal kingdom, the more inclined humans will be to protect animal habitats and animal rights.

Tending to a backyard garden can take time and perseverance. The result can be well worth the effort. Embracing a practice that dates back over thirty seven thousand years, Americans spend an increasing amount on home gardens and landscaping. Choosing the right garden furniture accents can turn your garden into a showplace.
During the Paleolithic Era, early humans had learned the value of certain plants, fruits, and nuts as food sources. Though the practice of growing plants for food would take several eons to take root, it was inevitable that human would learn to grow and domesticate plants.
Throughout ancient times, people from every corner of the world were learning the value of plants. Though the cultivation of plants for food became a priority, ancient civilizations had also come to value the beauty found in plant life. From the Fertile Crescent in ancient Mesopotamia to the lush jungles of what is now South America, people were learning about the wonders of nature. Great gardens were developed in Asia, the Middle East with a growing emphasis on the cultivation of flowering plants.
As time progressed, gardens became popular with monarchs and commoners. Of course, the lower on the economic ladder one resided, the more likely it was that growing food took precedence over the cultivation of decorative plants. Even though most flowers cannot be eaten, their beauty was not lost on even the most common people.
The English have always had a reputation for enjoying gardening as a hobby. In Asian cultures, the garden became a place for quiet reflection. In America, the tradition of gardening grew with the population. Americans adapted many of the same practices brought to the country by immigrants from all over the world. Going beyond the mere cultivation of flowers and ornamental plants, most cultures have included a variety of decorative enhancements in their gardening schemes.
Pagodas and other types of shade shelters provide a space to sit, relax, and just enjoy the view. The addition of a walking path allows folks to stroll and admire the blooming of nature close up. Many species of plants are climbers. Varieties of ivies and other climbing plants take on a completely new dimension when made part of a decorative arbor. Arbors can be looked at as a gateway, a point of transition from part of a garden to another. Arbors can range from the simple to the ornate, either homemade or custom built. Arbors large and small are like a portal through which we walk while admiring the glory and diversity of nature.
Decorative accents such as planters and urns are a practical and beautiful addition to any garden. Planters and urns have an advantage over simply cultivating plants in the ground. Planter and urns, large and small, can be moved and rearranged, much like furniture. Like rearranging a room in your home, portable planters and urns allow the gardener to change the look and feel of that special place.
Many species of roses and other flowering plants love a chance to climb and thrive. A decorative trellis gives these plants just the right incentive to grow. Like flowering fans, a trellis can be cultivated using a variety of ornamental plants.
Garden benches of wood, stone, or wrought iron not offer more than just a place to sit and reflect. The design of a garden bench, like any piece of accent furniture, can enhance a landscaping theme. The same can be said for fountains and ponds, which are gaining in popularity. Once an expensive proposition, required lots of maintenance, garden ponds and fountains available from home improvement centers that are self contained and east to install.

We all know somebody who was "born with a silver spoon in his mouth." That lucky friend who inherited money or to whom wealth, health and happiness came without any effort on their part. And, admit it, we are just that tinsy winsy bit jealous.
Well, how did family wealth and easy good fortune become associated with a commonplace eating utensil?
Spoons have been around for thousands of years. Most early spoons were wooden spatulas or even re-worked seashells. The Greeks and Romans did manufacture the occasional spoons of gold, silver and bronze, but the most common materials, as in the later medieval period, were wood, pewter and bone.
It is probably in the 15th and 16th centuries that the link between fortune and spoons became established. By Tudor times, it was not uncommon for godparents in wealthy society to present their godchildren with a christening gift of silver Apostle Spoons. A set of twelve spoons, each with an image of one apostle on the handle, was a prestigious christening gift. An alternative was a set of four spoons representing the evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Silver spoons are still given as christening gifts and baptism presents today, but Apostle Spoons are less common and more difficult to find.
In the sixteenth century a silver spoon was still pretty rare, so any child receiving such a christening gift would have to come from a wealthy background. Moreover, if some recent medical research is correct, they were also blessed with a bit of luck. Silver spoons and teethers have been popular for centuries, but it is only in the last few years that the antibiotic properties of silver have been recognized. To put it bluntly, the wealthy Little Lord Fauntleroy teething on a silver Christening spoon had a better chance of survival than a pauper sucking on a lump of pewter. I rather pooh-poohed this idea of silver's miraculous properties until I remembered my granny dropping a silver thrupenny bit into the milk churn to "stop it turning."
As with so many of our current customs and traditions, the Victorians have had a large influence on christening gifts. By the mid-nineteenth century the christening gift of a spoon was commonplace amongst the middle and upper classes. Often these were combined with teethers and rattles, so, once again, a well-off godchild could be seen with a silver christening spoon in his mouth.
We cannot be certain of this etymological link between christening gifts and the phrase "to be born with a silver spoon in his mouth," but there is obviously something way back in our subconscious that associates spoons with success, or the lack of it.
For example, "The Wooden Spoon" is a symbol of failure. Sports teams that come last in a tournament or league are handed "The Wooden Spoon," a tradition that goes back many centuries. There is also reference to it in the distant past at Cambridge University where the "Junior Optimes" -- the graduates at the bottom of the order of merit - were presented with a wooden spoon. And what did the more successful honor men receive? You've guessed it . . . a gold or silver spoon.
Similarly, there used to be an expression in the Royal Navy describing a young officer who received preferential treatment and accelerated promotion as "born with the silver spoon."
So, the jury is still out as to the exact origins of the phrase, but the romantic in me would like to believe that it finds its origins in silver christening gifts.
So the next time you talk about someone "born with a silver spoon in his mouth," you're allowed to say it with a touch of jealousy, just a hint of that little green-eyed monster, but also a touch of smugness . . . at least you may know where the phrase has come from.

Article Title: You Need A Weathervane To Tell Which Way The Wind Blows

Weathervanes, or wind vanes, have been used for centuries. Since the time of the ancient Greeks, the weather vane has served a dual purpose. Since the advent of the weathervane, their use has been both decorative and functional. The source of the wind may not have been fully understood, but people of ancient cultures certainly understood how important the wind is a predictor of the weather.
It should come as no surprise that the simple weathervane became as ornamental as it is practical. Historians believe the one of the first weathervanes was part of the Tower of Winds in ancient Greece. The tower was believed to have been constructed around forty BC by the astronomer Andronicus.
The Romans constructed many of their weathervanes from images of the gods. Prior to the advent of recorded scientific observation, there was a great deal of superstition around the weather. Through good weather or bad, the gods were often given credit for the prevailing winds.
Seafarers in ancient times used a simple type of weathervane, in the form of a small piece of cloth fastened to the rigging. This makeshift wind vane came to be known as a telltale and is still used today by sailors. The telltale was not the only use for a simple piece of cloth to indicate the strength and relative direction of the wind.
The weather vane has been discovered to be part of almost every ancient culture. Aside from depictions of various gods, animal themes common for wind vanes, even today. The use of animal characters usually had a connection to religious beliefs. Artisans have adopted the weathervane as a medium for their craft adding to the decorative qualities of these simple weather tools.
Balance is the key to a properly functioning weathervane, as the weathervane must be able to turn in reaction to the slightest breeze. The center of the weathervane must rest on a center axis and be equally balanced on both sides. A basic design includes a center post with the body of the weathervane resting over it. The center post may come to a sharply tapered point. The body of the weathervane would fit on the post in a way were the weight would be concentrated directly on the point. If the body of the weathervane is not allowed to move freely, its reaction to changes in wind direction and speed will be too slow.
The shape of the weather vane can vary from a simple arrow, to more ornate and decorative figures. Even a large weathervane can be designed in way that optimizes its reaction to the wind. The shape is probably more important than the size. The body of the weathervane must designed in a way that is somewhat aerodynamic. An airplane wing creates lift by generating a positive pressure under the wing surface and a negative pressure on the top. Think of a weathervane as a wing surface turned perpendicular to the ground. The reaction to both positive and negative pressure causes the weather vane to turn.
Farmers and ranchers used relied on the wind to operate water pumps. Anyone who has traveled the American heartland may remember seeing these simple windmills turning. A key to an operating windmill is its ability to rotate with changes in wind direction. These windmills have a tail stock that acts in the same way a weathervane does, helping to point the blades of the windmill in the optimal direction.
For most of us, the need for a windmill has little to do with whether we have a weathervane. In these days of modern meteorology, weather predictions are readily available, often in great detail. These advancements in modern technology have rendered the humble weather vane to a decorative addition to our homes. Like many pieces of Americana, antique weathervanes have become quite collectible. Many diverse themes have been used for the wind vane from the artistic to the humorous. With a rich history and functionality, the humble windmill can add a touch of whimsy and lore to your home.

During Lent, our thoughts turn to Spring, Easter and Christenings.
The Spring period around Easter is a very popular time for Christenings, symbolising as it does new beginnings, new life and re-birth. Spring is always a time of hope as we shake off the gloom and chill of Winter. Understandably, many parents see this as the perfect time to baptise their children - the first opportunity for family and friends to celebrate since the distant warming cheer of Christmas months before.
Whilst it may be an excuse for a well deserved party, this association between Christenings, Spring and Easter goes back centuries. Traditionally baptisms would take place during the Easter Vigil (a service held between sunset on Easter Saturday and sunrise on Easter Sunday) and nowadays it is common to witness a Christening ceremony on Easter Sunday at many church services. Most congregations welcome this addition to the service and some even see it as an opportunity to renew baptismal promises.
As the days grow longer, the first buds and blossom start to appear and we are once again surrounded by nesting birds. Birds' eggs have a very strong association with Easter and a resonance in Spring folklore throughout the world. In many cultures eggs are seen as symbols of new life after a harsh Winter, promising fertility and bounty in the coming year. With a dormant life inside waiting to be released, some churches see the egg as a symbol of the resurrection - the shell is seen as the confines of the tomb and when it cracks a new life is released. In some regions, especially in central Europe, eggs are blessed by the local priest at the Easter service, whilst in the West, most children are more interested in the eggs left by the Easter Bunny for the egg hunt. From egg rolling on the White House lawn, to egg dancing in Germany, egg painting in Romania and egg tapping in the UK, it is difficult to escape the close connection between eggs and Easter.
It is probably because of this connection with new life and re-birth that egg cups have been a traditional gift at Christenings, especially Easter Christenings, for many years. This tradition was adopted by the Victorians whose burgeoning middle class fuelled a growing market for silver gifts and trinkets. The silversmiths' catalogues from the time display a bewildering variety of silver egg cups in a plethora of shapes and styles. Usually individually cased and specifically designed as Christening gifts for children, these egg cups were often presented with a silver egg spoon as a gift set.
Whether it's eggs and egg cups, hot crossed buns, bunnies, bonnets or baptisms, the traditions and folklore associated with Easter go back thousands of years and are rooted in our pre-Christian past. The Easter Bunny is thought to be a descendant of the hare that in mythology was closely linked to the pagan goddess of Spring. Interestingly enough this goddess was called Eostre in Old English, but also Eastre in Old German and Saxon, and it is from her that we get the name Easter.
The adoption of ancient traditions and festivals into Christian culture was common as the early church sought to be adopted by pagan communities. In the same way that the early Christian church chose to celebrate Christmas close to the Winter Solstice, an important time for pagan ceremony, so the church also chose to calculate the date of Easter based on yet another pagan festival, the Vernal Equinox. Similarly, the Christening rite of baptism is an echo of the purity by water rituals found in not only Jewish but also Celtic, central European and Norse tradition.
So, as you munch your chocolate egg this Easter and celebrate the arrival of Spring with the Easter Bunny, pause and reflect, your actions are an echo from prehistory.

Anyone lucky enough to have seen the planet Earth from space would agree that the view is striking. In the cold vacuum of outer space, the view of our terrestrial home is unobstructed as the planet hangs like a giant blue marble in the silent vastness. Flat maps of the world display the boundaries of over two hundred of the worlds countries, the oceans, and the frozen poles. Globe stands provide us with a view of this beautiful planet in all of its three dimensional glory.
As an educational tool, there is no substitute for an Earth globe. One can see at a glance how the continents relate to each other in size and distance. Some globes and globes stands are purely decorative. Decorative globes may show landmasses and other global features as almost a caricature. Other types of decorative globes and globe stands feature decorative lighting effects that are great for child. For those considered geographical or cartographical purists, there are globes available that are highly accurate. Designer globes offer a variety of styles from Old World traditional to modern chic.
The history of the globe is thought to date back to one hundred fifty BME. The ancient Greeks are credited, not only with the introducing the concept of Earth as a sphere. Eratosthenes had reportedly calculated the circumference of the Earth. The ancient Greeks observed that a post, planted in a fixed position, would cast a different length shadow at various times throughout the day and through various seasons. It is really quite easy to understand how the ancient Greeks and other ancient cultures calculated that the Earth was round. It was necessary only to observe a lunar or solar eclipse. The shadows cast by the Earth and moon during an eclipse were observed correctly as round or spherical.
The planet rotates on its axis and this rotation is responsible for many observable phenomenon, like the changes of day and night. If the Earth did not spin, there would not be any gravity, since the rotation that produces gravitational pressure. Sir Isaac Newton discovered and measured this important principle, having been the first to measure gravitational force.
For thousands of years, people believed that the Earth was flat. Several factors went into the formation of this belief. Standing on a fixed position, one could not see beyond the horizon. Far out to sea, the earth appears to stop. At a higher altitude, as one might find on a hilltop, the curvature of the earth would still not be visible.
The superstitions about the edge of the world are a significant part of mythology and ancient lore. Sailors have always been very superstitious and tales going to lands end were complete with stories of sea monsters and death. Legends claimed that great monsters lived in the sea just beyond the visible horizon and sailing into those waters meant certain death.
Despite strong evidence that Norse sailors navigated from modern day Scandinavia to North America, some historians give credit to Christopher Columbus with proving that the world was round. Regardless of who gets the credit, the observable evidence against a flat earth was irrefutable. Even today, there are groups of people who still believe that the Earth is flat. The Flat Earth Society is one of these groups who disagree with the observations made from space. The group has even claimed that manned space flights and satellite observations are manufactured on a Hollywood film studio.
The production of early globes was dependent on maps available at the time. Cartography has always been an evolving science. Early seafarers were the main source of information regarding shoreline shapes, water depths, and distances. The accuracy of map making improved along side advances in celestial navigation.

One of the most flexible and portable sleep surfaces in the world is the futon. Originating in Japan, the futon has become a popular alternative to the traditional western mattress. The Japanese have long developed ingenious ways to maximize available space and the futon is a perfect example.
To understand why the development of the futon is so important, we must first put Japan in the proper context. Japan is an island country that has a scarcity of available land. Space has always been limited, especially now. Today Japan has a population of approximately one hundred and twenty seven million living in an area slightly smaller than California. To really put things in perspective, California has a population of around thirty four million. So it no wonder that the Japanese have attached such a priority to the efficient use of space.
The traditional Japanese household is quite small by western standards. Where the average American home might measure more than two thousand square feet, the average Japanese home might be only one third the space. Rooms may have multiple uses, a living becomes a bedroom, becomes a dining room.
In addition to limitations on physical living space, Japan has very little arable land for the cultivation of crops. Crops like cotton need a great deal of space per plant. So materials available for the production of fabric are not very abundant and must be used in the most efficient way possible. These limitations have been overcome by the cultural discipline exercised by the Japanese.
Shikibuton is Japanese for a bed that most of us know as the futon. The shikibuton is a thin mattress, usually no more than four or five inches thick. Cotton is the traditional material used the batting or stuffing of the shikibuton. There is no foam or spring material used. The batting gives the mattress a very stiff and solid feel. The traditional use of a shikibuton includes a rug that placed on the floor under the mattress. When not in use, the shikibuton would be rolled up and stored until it needed again. This allowed the sleeping space to be used for other purposes.
It is rare in Japan to find a futon used with any type of bifold or trifold frame. More common might be the use of a simple, raised wooded platform.
The introduction of the futon to the West has been a roaring success. What really made the futon popular in American was the introduction of bifold and trifold frames. The frames add an element of flexibility to Western style to the simple futon mattress. An alternative to the daybed and the sleeper sofa, the combination of a futon mattress and a frame provides both a place to sit and a place to sleep.
The standard sizes for a futon and frame combination is roughly equal to a full sized mattress, about seventy five by eighty inches. Like the shikibuton, the futon can be converted into a place to sit during the day and converted to a bed at night. American made futons have taken the Japanese version a few steps further. Cotton batting, though still common, has been augmented by the addition of various types of foam. Another western innovation is the innerspring futon. Similar to a traditional innerspring mattress, the innerspring futon feels more like a regular mattress. When used as a sitting surface, the innerspring feels more like a couch.
Now many people prefer the feel of a traditional shikibuton, which is very firm. Innovations like springs and foam battings have opened up the futon market to more people. Futon frames have gone from simple metal affairs to very sturdy and attractive wood frames.

Considered one of the great contributions to the Art Nouveau movement, stained glass lamps have remained very popular. With a characteristic stained glass shade, Tiffany lamps became the standard for these beautiful light fixtures. Taking full advantage of the widening availability electricity, stained glass lamps are a great example of form following function.
Following the success of the original Tiffany designs, many other styles of stained glass lamps were produced. Though the term Tiffany is often used to describe stained glass lamps, there is only one Tiffany. The concept of a table lamp was not new in the late eighteen hundreds. Oil and gas table lamps had been in wide use by the time Thomas Edison and other inventors began marketing electric light bulbs.
The first Tiffany lamps appeared at the turn of the twenty century. Each lamp was made by hand and reflected the work of the individual artist. The base of the lamp was typically made of brass or bronze. It should be pointed out that several copies of a particular design were made but the lamps were never mass produced. Even though several copies of a pattern were produced, each lamp shade has a one of a kind feel imparted by the individual artist. Louis Tiffany gained experience in working with glass as a maker of stained glass windows. Working with pieces of scrap, he began to design lamp shades. He utilized standard methods of production that were used in creating stained glass windows.
Leaded stained glass is typically made from cut pieces of colored glass. A pattern would be drawn and cut then used to score and cut the individual pieces of the glass puzzle. The edges of each piece of glass would be covered in copper metal foil than soldered together. In the days of Louis Tiffany and until recently, lead based solders were used, hence the basis for the term leaded glass. Lead has been removed from most solders since lead is now considered a hazardous material. Once the soldering is completed, the joints would be cleaned and given a treatment. The treatment would involve applying a patina to the solder.
Tiffany lamps are characterized by several distinctive patterns. Some tiffany designs were based in the use of geometric shapes ranging from squares and rectangles to triangles and ovals. Tiffany also created beautiful floral patterns in a variety of shapes. Florals were often combined with some type of geometric pattern.
Cone shaped lamp shades are more difficult to produce. The pieces of glass were generally smaller than the glass used to make geometric shapes. The difficult task of creating a cone shape shade makes this class of Tiffany lamp more expensive and highly collectible. Not all of the shades produced by Tiffany featured a flat edge. The irregular patterns often came in a globe shape with edges that were irregularly shaped. The patterns were less geometric and more free flowing in design.
Regardless of which pattern it is, a genuine Tiffany lamp can fetch quite a high price. The highest price ever paid for a Tiffany lamp at auction is reported to be over eight million dollars.
For those of us who can not afford the high price of genuine Tiffany, there are some reasonable alternatives. There are lamp makers who offer reproductions of Tiffany patterns for a fraction of the cost you might expect to pay for the genuine article. There are some very high quality reproductions and original designs done in the Tiffany style by modern artists. It is common to see glass mosaic designs on some of the lamp bases.
If you fancy the idea of owning a genuine Tiffany lamp, it pays to do your homework. As with any type of collectible, there are many fakes and knockoffs of the genuine article. There are Tiffany knockoffs are very well made and will certainly fool an untrained buyer. Be certain to educate yourself about the unique qualities of genuine Tiffany before you commit to a purchase.
